STEAMBOATS

by Janet Spencer On April 23, 1838, the first steamboat to cross the Atlantic Ocean from England to America arrived in New York City.

Come along with Tidbits as we remember the contribution made by steamships.

SIRIUS vs GREAT WESTERN * SAVE OUR ENVIROMENT

• The SS Great Western was the first paddle-wheel steamship built with the intention of crossing the Atlantic, and it was the largest passenger ship in the world at the time. Built in Bristol, England, it was launched on March 31, 1838, whereupon a fire broke out in the engine room. Damage was minimal, but fifty passengers cancelled their bookings, leaving only seven passengers to make the trip.

• Taking advantage of the delay, rival steamship Sirius embarked for New York, keen on beating the Great Western across the ocean. The Sirius left on April 4, followed by the Great Western on April 8. Even with the start, the Sirius beat the Great Western by only a single day, arriving on April 23.

• The average speed of the Sirius was 8.03 knots (14.87 km/h) but the Great Western made the trip at 8.66 knots (16.04 km/h). The Great Western went on to make 45 ocean crossings in the next eight years, averaging 16 days west to New York and 13 days going back to Britain, in a day when the journey usually took 40 days on a sail-powered boat.

STEAMSHIP BEGINNINGS • Before steamships crossed the ocean, they plied the rivers. In 1819 the first steamboat made its way up the Missouri River as far as the site where Omaha sits today. It was called the Western Engineer and carried surveyors.

It was shaped like a dragon monster, with the steam of the engines emitted from its mouth. It was hoped this fearful sight would prevent Indians from attacking the boat. Apparently the ploy was successful, as the boat encountered no trouble.

• Robert Fulton is remembered as the father of the steamboat, although John Fitch and John Stevens worked on the invention before him. Fulton adapted ideas of others and put steamboats in the public eye. He applied for a monopoly of steam traffic on the nation’s rivers. The state of New York granted him alone the right to operate steam powered boats within its boundaries. Fulton then asked for similar rights from other states. All turned him down except Louisiana. Controlling steam traffic in Louisiana meant that Fulton ultimately controlled much of the traffic on the Mississippi, because he could prevent all other steamships from reaching New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. (continued): • A man named Shreve was also interested in steamboats. To challenge Fulton’s monopoly, he took a boat called the Enterprise down the Mississippi to New Orleans. He put up bail for the boat as soon as he landed, before deputies had even attached it. He then returned north to build a better steamboat, called the Washington.

• On her maiden voyage, the Washington set a speed record for travel from Louisville to New Orleans. The lawsuit against the Enterprise was still unsettled, and the Washington was quickly impounded.

Shreve countered by getting a court order holding Fulton responsible for loss of income.

• By now, people realized it was a mistake to let only one company run steamboats on the river. Public sentiment was against Fulton. Seeing the writing on the wall, lawsuits were dropped and the monopoly was broken.

• 70% of the steamboats that were destroyed on the Missouri River met their end by striking snags. Nearly 300 ships were lost this way. Shreve’s snag boats removed 2,245 snags and 1,710 overhanging trees in 300 miles.

A LANDMARK COURT CASE In 1853 the Rock Island Railroad built a drawbridge over the Mississippi River in order to let trains cross the river. When a steamboat called the Effie Afton smashed against the bridge and sunk with the loss of many lives, the owner hired a young lawyer who argued that the railroad was at fault and should be forced to remove the bridge. Although the steamboat company spent $20,000 on litigation, the case was lost. Soon railroad bridges were popping up along the length of the river. The young lawyer, however, went on to greater things. His name was Abe Lincoln.

• Later Shreve was appointed U.S. Superintendent of Western River Improvements. He invented the ‘snag boat’ which cleared some 300 miles of the Mississippi River of obstacles. Shreveport, Louisiana was named after him.

—Fact— One of Shreve’s tasks was to dismantle a floating, living raft made of logs and live trees, weeds and shrubs. This huge tangled mass of vegetation was 26 miles (42 km) long. Each time the Mississippi River flooded, the raft would be lifted and moved to some other location, blocking shipping lanes where ever it went. It took Shreve five years and $311,000 merely to blast a channel through the center of the raft. It wasn’t until some 30 years later when, with the help of a new invention called nitroglycerin, U.S. Engineers were able to blast away the last of the Great Raft.

BUGS IN THE SYSTEM • Shreve built many steamboats but his favorite was always the Washington. When a boiler exploded on June 9, 1819, Shreve was injured and 8 others died. This was the first in a long string of steamboat accidents. Besides exploding boilers, another problem was the incredible heights of the boats. At first steamboats were only double-deckers, then a third and fourth deck were added. These towering boats could not hold their own against crosswinds and were often blown into shoals. Another danger was the fact that the entire boats were made of wood and were extremely flammable.

A NEW PORT In 1851 David Denny and John Low built a cabin on the Puget Sound and started a town. Shortly afterwards the first steamboat arrived, looking for lumber to carry to San Francisco. The pioneers had lots of lumber, but there was no easy place where the logs could be loaded on the

ship. The settlers decided to relocate their town to a place where boats could more easily be loaded and unloaded. The local Indians helped them find a new townsite. The new town was named for their chief. Today it’s the largest metropolitan area in the Pacific Northwest, and it the 8th largest port in the U.S. What city is it?

RAILROADS vs STEAMSHIPS When railroads started crossing the continent, people with vested interests in steamships tried to vilify railroads. In posters and ads, railroads were called the work of the devil. But railroads eventually put steamboats out of business.

FAMOUS CANADIANS:

SAMUEL CUNARD • Samuel Cunard was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1787, the son of a successful carpenter. He grew up on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by the thriving maritime industries of Halifax.

• At the age of 17, he took over management of his father’s large lumber yard.

He then spent three years studying the shipping industry in Boston. When Samuel returned to Halifax from Boston at the age of 21, his father built a wharf and bought a schooner, and together they established the firm of A. Cunard & Son as they engaged in trading up and down the coast of Canada.

Soon, a second ship was added in order to engage in river trade.

• When the War of 1812 broke out, A. Cunard & Son was one of the few shipping outfits authorized to operate in American waters while flying a neutral flag. When the war ended, Samuel went to England where be obtained the contract to carry mail from Britain to Bermuda once a month. By 1814, Bermuda enjoyed the most reliable mail delivery of any of the British colonies.

In 1816, Samuel Cunard was also granted the contract to carry mail from England to Boston.

• When his father died, the company was re-named S. Cunard & Co as several of Samuel’s brothers joined the firm. By now the company owned thirty ships, all of them powered by sail which was the only option at the time. Next Samuel landed the contract to carry tea for the East India Company of London. Then he bought a coal mine in Nova Scotia and started shipping coal.

• By 1825, the Cunard brothers were becoming interested in a new invention, the steamship. They commissioned the construction of their first steamer, the Royal William.

• The Royal William ran between Halifax and Quebec. When a cholera outbreak forced the Royal William into quarantine, the company nearly went bankrupt, but Samuel Cunard was convinced that transatlantic steamship service was feasible. To test his theory, in 1833, he took the Royal William across the Atlantic from Canada to England, making the trip in only 17 days. While in England, he sold the ship.

• Five years later, Samuel Cunard was in England when he saw several side-wheel paddle steamships under construction in the race to be the first steamer to travel across the Atlantic from England to America. He followed the story of the race between the Sirius and the Great Western with interest.

• Back in Canada, he saw an ad in the London Times: “Steam vessels required for conveying Her Majesty’s Mails and Dispatches between England and Halifax, N.S., and also between England, Halifax and New York.” Cunard set sail for England at once, where he won the contract. He commissioned the construction of three steamers, knowing that this venture would make or break him. The new firm was called Cunard’s Company, shortened to simply Cunard’s. By 1940, Samuel Cunard had three steamers making regular ocean crossings in only 12 days.

• After establishing an unbeatable reputation for safety, Cunard began investing in ocean liners, dominating the Atlantic passenger trade with ships such as the RMS Queen Mary, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, and the Queen Elizabeth II. • Samual Canard died a wealthy man in 1865. The Cunard line continues to this day, although it now operates as a division of the Carnival Corporation and is based out of the United Kingdom rather than Canada.

NAUTICAL RACES • In 1851 Prince Albert hosted the Great London Exhibition to showcase technological advances. In conjunction, Queen Victoria invited all nations to participate in the annual 53-mile regatta around the Isle of Wight. Fifteen British vessels entered, plus one American boat.

• The owner of the American boat, John Stevens, was the first commodore of the New York Yacht Club, and his boat was designed by engineer George Steers, who made his living designing sleek, quick boats. It won by a wide margin.

Legend has it that when the Queen asked, “Who has won?” and was told who it was, she replied, “And who is second?” only to be told, “Your Majesty, there is no second.” It was some time before the second place winner showed up.

• The trophy, made of 134 ounces of silver, was called the ‘One Hundred Guinea Cup’ because that’s how much it cost.

It was awarded to Stevens and his crew. He donated the trophy to the New York Yacht Club in 1857 with the stipulation that it be awarded to the winner of international boat races held once every three years, in order to stimulate competition between countries.

• The trophy and the race were named after Stevens’ boat, and a race was born. What was the name of the ship, now the name of a famous yacht race? Answer at the bottom of the next page.

A GOOD LOSER • As a young man in Glasgow, Scotland, Thomas helped his parents run their small grocery store. He spent a few years living in the U.S. where his work in a New York City grocery store introduced him to the effectiveness of publicity events and advertising.

A GOOD LOSER, con’t • Later Thomas returned to Glasgow and opened his own store, which was so successful that he kept opening more. He engaged in innovative marketing techniques including staging parades and hiring brass bands. By 1888 he owned over 300 stores.

• Around the time Thomas opened his 300th grocery store, the price of tea began to fall, and his middle-class customers began drinking more of it. Spotting an opportunity, Thomas opened a tea trading office and established wholesale distribution channels that allowed working-class people to be able to easily afford tea. He bought his tea in such large amounts that he was able to undercut competitor’s prices.

• This was such a successful venture that he began to invest in tea plantations. In Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), coffee plantation owners had recently suffered a coffee blight that ruined their crop, so Thomas convinced them to plant tea instead.

• In a time when most tea was sold by the pound, Thomas pioneered selling it packaged in individual bags.

• Thomas’ hobby was yachting, and he entered the America’s Cup yacht race five times, hoping to bring the trophy home to Britain. He lost every time, but the publicity he got from being ‘the world’s best loser’ caused tea sales to soar. Today, Thomas’ last name is synonymous with tea. What’s his name? Answer below.

When I spoke with Eric recently about this new role that brought him back to series television, he told me how excited he is to help usher in "a new Hallmark Channel."

A: NBC has ordered a 13-episode period drama called "Aquarius," in which David stars as a police detective hunting a hippie cult leader who turns out to be Charles Manson. The series will cover the early years of Manson and his "family," with the full story playing out in future seasons (if it gets renewed). David told "Variety": "I'm thrilled to be working with (NBC Chairman) Bob Greenblatt again and coming back to broadcast television. I think 'Aquarius' has a chance to be a special show and I can't wait to get going." *** Q: I read that my favorite comedic actress, Amy Poehler, has a brother in the business too. Is that true? Jimmy Fallon's success is telling networks that late-night shows need to be variety shows that use social mediums to keep viewers' attention. Letterman had a good run, but didn't change with the times. *** Are Arnold Schwarzenegger fans giving up on him?

Last year "The Last Stand" cost $30 million to make and earned $48 million, which might have been due to his Oscar-winning co-star Forest Whitaker. "Escape Plan" cost $50 million to film and took in $137 million, which could have been because of his co-star, Sylvester Stallone. Then he has a cameo in Billy Bob Thornton's film "London Fields," with fiance Amber Heard and "Divergent" star Theo James, followed by a role as The Wolf in the $40 million musical "Into the Woods" with Meryl Streep (out Dec. 25). He's already finished "Mortdecai" with Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn and Gwyneth Paltrow, and currently is shooting "Black Mass" with Guy Pearce and Dakota Johnson (star of "50 Shades of Grey"), both for 2015. Depp's original "Alice in Wonderland" grossed over $1 billion, and he's set for the sequel, as well as "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," which starts shooting at the end of the year. BUNNIES, EGGS ADORN EASTER SUNDAY TABLE Woven straw baskets, chicks and pastel candies set the scene for a springy Easter Sunday table. Here are a few last-minute creative twists and flourishes your kids can do to add even more spark to the celebration. Hop to it!

ADORABLE BUNNY NAPKINS Follow these folding directions carefully, and you'll have bunnies multiplying in minutes. Make one for each place setting, or let them hippity hop around the table.

1. Open a large, square cloth napkin or a piece of sturdy soft fabric (approximately 19 inches by 19 inches). Lay it out in front of you wrong side up. Make a 3-inch triangular fold on each of two opposite corners.

2. Continue folding evenly on each side three to four times toward the middle of the cloth. Finally, fold one side over the other.

3. Lift it up and make a loose knot about one third down the length of the narrow folded cloth. The first long "ear" of the bunny will poke out when the knot is in place.

Data showed that between 1999 and 2012, obesity jumped from 14.5 percent to 17.3 percent, and the number of children with the most severe form of obesity has jumped from 0.9 percent to 2.1 percent, signaling the need for more widespread, intensive interventions.

Previous CDC data showing obesity rates falling among 2 to 5 year olds may have been misinterpreted because of an unusual spike in obesity at baseline and a shorter span of time analyzed, according to the lead author of this current study.

Fruits and Vegetables May Prevent Early Death Increased intakes of fruits and vegetables may prevent early death, according to a review published online in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Researchers followed 65,226 participants from the Health Surveys for England aged 35 and older for seven years.

Those who consumed seven or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day saw a 42 percent decreased risk of death due to any cause, compared with those who consumed the least amount. Fruit and vegetable consumption was specifically associated with a 25 percent and 31 percent decreased risk of death from cancer and heart disease, respectively.

This study recommends governmental bodies take into account this new evidence in order to better promote health and nutrition education and improve policy.

ANSWER: You have the classic symptoms of disembarkment syndrome, also called mal de debarquement. Whereas most people getting off a boat or ship will have the sensation of moving for a few hours, in people with this syndrome, the symptoms may continue for months or even years. It seems to be more likely in women, and may have an association with migraine headache. Interestingly, going back on a boat can make it better in the short term, but worse later.

GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE If you're like me, besides having my sincere sympathies, you are constantly bemoaning the lack of sporting endeavors in your life.

By this I mean you used to play sports, competitively.

Maybe you played on a team for a school or company or an organization, and after games you would play more games. And then one day, it all dried up. Maybe you changed jobs and they didn't have leagues, or you simply got too busy with work and the kids.

And hey, maybe some of you have been able to keep

Sports are healthful, the mix of adrenaline, the burning of calories, the expansion of your lungs and the release of endorphins makes it clear to you and your sweat-soaked shirt that your body is a machine. But you hate the gym, you don't like to run on treadmills because you're not a hamster. But you don't want to just wear black for the rest of your life either. Here are several ways to bring health back into your life ... and sports.

1. Play Tennis Tennis can be played at any age, and you also can play doubles. The equipment is relatively inexpensive, and there is a racquet club or court closer to you than you think. Haven't played in a while? Why not rent a ball machine for a half hour and get back into the swing of things.

2. Buy a bicycle Just like cars, the world of biking comes with its own assortment of snobbery and class issues. But if you live in a relatively at environment, the simple joy of an evening bike ride or using it as an alternative form of transportation will invigorate you more than you know.

3. Let's Go Bowling, Dude This is a two-part exercise. Part one entails renting or buying the Coen Brothers classic movie "The Big Lebowski" (and be forewarned ... it's a very blue movie that is rife with curse words and sexual themes, so it's not for kids or the ultra-conservative set), and then whenever you have 20 minutes to kill, stop into your local bowling alley and bowl a few frames. Grab some inexpensive drinks and food, and slather yourself in Purel before you leave, too.

Bowling is king.

4. Hit the Cages You've got a baseball bat in your car. You're never going to use it in a fit of road rage. Face it: You're just not the type. Instead, stop at your local batting cage and take a few hundred cuts one afternoon.

Remember why hitting things in this way is even better than the reason you stuck it in your wheel well in the first place.

You can do this on the cheap, but believe me, you'll ďŹ nd that these simple tips add immensely to your overall enjoyment of life.

Cats in Zip Code 33020 Qualify for FREE Spay/Neuter Fort Lauderdale, FL – More than 1,500 appointments are available for free spay/neuter for cats residing in the Hollywood zip code of 33020. Thanks to PetSmart ® Charities ®, the Humane Society of Broward County was awarded a grant to be used exclusively for the spaying/neutering of felines residing in the Hollywood zip code of 33020. Hollywood is the twelfth largest populated city in the state and also an area that has an enormous number of feral and free roaming cats. As a result there are thousands of kittens born each year and many of them end up in animal shelters.

Owned cats, feral cats and neighborhood cats residing in the intervention area are eligible. Included are the spay or neuter; free vaccinations, Revolution for fleas and intestinal parasites and ear notching for ferals. The ultimate goal is to reduce the population of unwanted cats and the number of cats surrendered to the shelter. The goal is to sterilized 2,240 felines. The rule for yard sales is as follows: For items that are new, still with tags or in original, unopened packaging, price it as Use a pencil and straight ruler to mark a cutting line along the top, sides and, if needed, bottom of the damaged area. Make the area as perfect a square or rectangle as possible, which will make the repair much easier.

Using the utility knife, slice along the lines, then follow with the drywall saw to cut all the way through. Be very careful sawing next to the studs, as electrical and plumbing lines sometimes run along these boards. Use the utility knife or angle the saw to slice drywall that's flush against a stud. Carefully pull away the damaged wallboard. If part of the damaged area is attached to the stud, tug gently on the attached wallboard to reveal the screw, and then either remove the screw or carefully knock out the drywall from underneath it.

Q: I know you've covered this many times before, but my two sons were chasing each other and one of them crashed into his bedroom wall and left a big dent and crack in the wallboard! He's OK, but how do I deal with such a big damaged area? -- Sara in Des Moines A: A large area of damage can be a bit daunting, but you can probably replace that section yourself. You'll need to buy a piece of wallboard that is a few inches bigger on all sides than the damaged area. You'll also need a utility knife (box cutter), a wallboard saw, a sturdy scrap of plywood or a 1-by-1 board, wood screws, drywall screws, an electric drill, drywall tape, drywall putty (or joint compound) and a putty knife, and fine-grit sandpaper.

The wallboard caved in when your son charged into it, meaning the impact probably occurred between two studs. You'll find this out when you begin to remove the damaged section.

Now, even if part of the new wallboard will be secured to a stud, you'll still need to add a backing to the unsecured side (or sides) of the patch, especially if it's a really big hole. The 1-by-1 scrap wood comes into play here. Measure and cut the wood so that it extends an inch or so past the top and bottom of the hole. Place it behind the hole, located about the center of the biggest gap between the studs, and use your electric drill to secure it with a wood screw, top and bottom.

With the backing in place, put the new wallboard up with a helper holding it steady. Use drywall or wood screws to attach the wallboard to the backing boards and to the stud (near the original screw location but not at it).

Now to cover it up: Place drywall tape along the edges of the new patch. Using a wide putty knife, apply drywall putty or joint compound over the tape, feathering the edges out to better blend with the surrounding wall. Let the compound dry for at least recommended time, then sand the compound smooth. Additional drying time
