• Adler’s theory maintained that first-born children receive an abundance of attention, but only until the second child is born. When a new baby arrives, the first-born may feel unloved, believing he or she has lost the mother’s love to the new baby. Adler called this being “dethroned,” and claimed it had a lasting effect on the individual. The loss of attention might cause the first child to become fearful, high-achieving, anxious, or competitive. He might have a need to retain praise from parents and become prone to perfectionism, making him vulnerable to stress.

• The accomplishments of the first-born, such as walking and talking, are monumental in the eyes of parents and the child is pushed to achieve at a faster pace. First-time parents worry if the child isn’t advancing as they expect and might pressure for success. Parents might push the child to carry out the dreams they had for themselves, and are often harder on first-borns.

• First-borns dominate the list of Nobel Prize winners, National Merit scholars, and astronauts. A few famous firstborns are Winston Churchill, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, and Harry Truman.

• When a second child arrives, the first-born often becomes the “helper.”

This results in a desire to protect and lead, and they become nurturers and caretakers.

• The behavior of a middle child is often the result of the fact that they have never been “in the spotlight.” Their older sibling seems to be forging ahead with achievements while the younger one is the “entertainer” of the family, making the middle-born feel upstaged, left out, and insecure. The middle child often tries hard to be different from the older sibling. Because they sometimes feel ignored, they branch out on their own, becoming mentally tough and independent. They develop good social skills as a result, and often turn to their peer group rather than family for support.

• Adler believed that middle children are more cooperative because they’ve grown up sharing attention. This also makes them more flexible and diplomatic, skills that allow them to thrive in business. The middles are also frequently good at peacemaking and negotiating – they’re good at seeing both sides of an issue! Fifty-two percent of U.S. presidents were middle children.

• Because parents start to relax by the second child and become less demanding, middle children tend to have a more relaxed attitude toward life than their older sibling. Some famous middles include David Letterman, Richard Nixon, Madonna, and Princess Diana.

• A recent study indicates that first-born children receive about 3,000 hours more time with parents between age 4 and 13 than their younger siblings. Perhaps this is why first-borns are more pressured to succeed, as parents “loosen up” as more children arrive. Parents also spend less time with each arriving child because they get more proficient at child-rearing tasks.

• The baby of the family is often more pampered than his older siblings. Adler believed this was one of the worst actions of a parent, leading to dependence, selfishness, and irresponsibility. He theorized that babied children easily become manipulative and tem-

peramental. The youngest child often gets more attention because the older children have grown to different developmental stages and are somewhat independent.

• The baby of the family is often the entertainer or the charmer and likes being in the limelight. He is more carefree and affectionate, and has a good sense of humor, but usually seems to be more rebellious than his older siblings.

• The baby tends to be less responsible and more adventurous, taking part in risky activities and aggressive sports.

He is the daredevil of the family. A recent study points out that those major league baseball players who are the youngest are 10 times more likely to steal bases than first-born players.

• The down side of being the baby is that parents often don’t give a lot of attention or praise to the milestones, since tying shoes and riding a two-wheeler for the first time have become “old hat” to them.

• Famous babies of the family include Jim Carrey, Billy Crystal, Eddie Murphy, Steve Martin, and Rosie O’Donnell, which makes sense since babies like being center stage and making people laugh.

• An only child has the advantage of receiving all the attention and resources. This often results in high achievers and better performance on intelligence tests. Single children learn how to play alone, which can lead to the development of vivid imaginations and fantasies. They also tend to be very close to their parents.

• A recent study indicates that being raised with siblings makes for more healthy relationships later in life. The American Sociological Association says that the more siblings you have, the better your chance of a long and happy marriage, since you’ve developed skills in conflict negotiation and personality clashes. The research points to a reduction in the likelihood of divorce by 2% per sibling. Which child is the least likely to get married? Studies indicated that would be the only child.

WAYNE GRETZKY It’s no surprise that hockey’s greatest player should hail from Canada, home of many heroes of the ice. Here are the details about some of the many accomplishments of “The Great One.” • Wayne Gretzky owes much of his success to his father Walter, who built an ice rink in the family’s Brantford, Ontario backyard, where he could keep an eye on his four sons from the kitchen window. Walter dubbed it the “Wally Coliseum” and it was here that Wayne was skating before he was three. Walter set up practice drills around bleach bottles and tin cans and regularly advised his sons to “skate where the puck’s going, not where it’s been.”

• Wayne began team play at age six, playing with a group of ten-year-olds. In his final year of peewee hockey, at age 10, scored an amazing 378 goals, and by the time he was 13, he had scored 1,000 goals.

• Although Gretzky was anxious to turn pro at age 17, he was prohibited from playing in the NHL, who had an age restriction of 20. The World Hockey Association did not have the same rules, so Wayne signed a contract with the Indianapolis Racers.

The team folded soon after and sold the young player to another WHA team, the Edmonton Oilers, When the WHA went bust, the Oilers became part of the NHL, and

the young Gretzky played his first NHL season in 1979.

• Gretzky led the Oilers to Stanley Cup championships in 1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988, shattering records along the way, including most single-season goals and assists, and becoming the only player to break the 200-point mark. Just two hours after the 1988 Stanley Cup victory, Gretzky was informed he was being traded to the L.A. Kings.

He was a member of that organization for the next eight seasons, leading them to the Stanley Cup finals in 1993.

• It was on to the St. Louis Blues in 1996, but after just one season, he moved to the New York Rangers. While with the Rangers, Gretzky was a member of the 1998 Canadian Olympic hockey team. After three years in New York, the Great One retired after 20 seasons of hockey. He held or shared 61 NHL records, including most goals in season play, with 894 in his 1,487 regular season games.

• Post-retirement, Gretzky became a partner with the Phoenix Coyotes and later became head coach until 2009. He served as executive director of the Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake, leading the team to its first gold medal in 50 years. This father of five is active in the restaurant business in Toronto, as well as owner of his own wineries.

• Players and commentators said Gretzky played like he had eyes in the back of his head, that he was constantly improvising. Gretzky says he actually sensed players more than saw them and would get a feeling about where a teammate was going to be.

In his words, “A good hockey player plays where the puck is. A great player plays where the puck is going to be.” He attributed much of his success not to instinct but to practice, crediting his father his perseverance. “I’ve put in almost as much time studying hockey as a medical student puts in studying medicine.”

• No NHL player will ever wear a jersey with the number 99 again. Gretzky’s jersey has been retired league-wide, the only player to be honored as such.

OH, MY! Fans of the 1939 classic The Wizard of Oz will recognize the familiar phrase, “Lions and tigers and bears, oh, my!” uttered by Dorothy. Here is some interesting info about each of Dorothy’s fears.

• Lions are found primarily in Africa, from the southern border of the Sahara down to South Africa. Although we often refer to lions as “King of the Jungle,” they actually dwell in a prairie grassland habitat. They’re the second in size of the “big cats,” after tigers. A male lion is about 10 feet (3 m) in length, usually weighing between 330 and 550 lbs. (150-250 kg). Its tail adds another 2 or 3 feet (0.6 – 1 m) to its length. At its shoulder, an adult lion stands nearly 4 feet (1.2 m) tall. Its roar can be heard nearly 5 miles (8 km) away.

• The cats live in groups called prides, surprisingly, usually led by the females. A pride might have as many as 40 lions, and the females stay in their mother’s pride their entire lives.

• A lion’s diet is most large animals, such as zebras and wildebeests. The females are the primary hunters in the pride.

• Very vulnerable to extinction, there are only about 3,200 tigers existing in the wild today. In just over 100 years, the world has lost 97% of its wild tigers.

• Whereas the lion is a social animal, tigers are solitary and typically hunt alone. They are massive an-

imals, with the male Siberian tigers weighing up to 660 lbs. (300 kg). When their prey is bagged, the tiger might eat up to 88 lbs. (40 kg) of meat at one time.

Their large size doesn’t slow them down, however, as tigers can reach a running speed of up to 40 mph (65 km/hr) and can swim distances of up to 3.7 miles (6 km).

• White tigers are extremely rare, carrying a gene that is present in just one out of every 10,000 tigers.

• There are eight different species of bears, including brown, black, polar, and pandas. Brown bears are the largest of all, and can weigh up to 2,200 lbs.

(998 kg). Polar bears are the second largest species, weighing about 1,500 lbs. (680 kg), and measuring up to 10 feet (3 m) long. Their thick white coat has nearly 9,700 hairs per square inch. Diet consists mainly of seals and walruses. A polar bear can track down an odor from 20 miles (32 km) away, and can detect a dead seal under 3 feet (0.9 m) of solid ice.

Once it captures its prey, the polar bear’s stomach can hold 150 lbs. (68 kg) of meat.

• About 1,000 to 2,000 giant pandas live in the wilds of China today. At birth, the cub weighs just 5 oz. (150 g.), but will grow to about 330 lbs. (150 kg). Its diet is almost entirely bamboo, about 45 lbs. (20.4 kg) a day.

• It’s not wise to try to out-run a bear. Some bears can run up to 40 mph (64 km/hr). Compare this to the pace of Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt, the fast human alive, who can run 27 mph (43.5 km/hr.).

English peas (also called shelling peas, green peas or garden peas) are the most common. Their pods are inedible, so the peas must be shelled before eating. "Petits pois" is the name given to very small English peas.

Sugar snap peas have a thicker, edible shell. As the name denotes, this variety is sweet like sugar and makes a distinctive sound when its shell is broken. Sugar snap peas can be eaten both raw and cooked.

SPRING PEAS, PLEASE! One of the best ways to celebrate the coming of spring is with a basket full of small, very fresh, sweet green peas. You know that peas are fresh when their pods are firm and green, so avoid any that are yellowing or wilting. Go for medium pods rather than large, thick-skinned ones, which are more mature and contain larger, tougher peas.

Break open a pod and check the peas inside. They should be small, bright green and firm; if you taste one, it should be tender and sweet.

If all you can find are large, mature peas, opt for frozen peas instead. They're usually picked when they're young and tender and immediately frozen. Mature peas are not as tender and sweet as young ones, and they're less versatile. They need to be cooked longer and more slowly, and their firmer texture works well only in stews and braises.

Peas provide essential nutrients and are an excellent source of vitamins K and B6, and folic acid, all crucial to bone strength and cardiovascular health.

Snow peas, often seen in Chinese cooking, are flatter, thinner and more translucent than the others. They are eaten in their entirety, and no shelling is required.

Peas don't have much of a shelf life, so don't store them for long periods of time. Store pods in a plastic bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. Use them within a couple of days.

Shelling peas is easy. To do it, remove the stem end of the pod, peel the stringy fiber from the seam, pry the pod open and run your thumb along the interior to detach the peas.

Once they're shelled, the best way to store peas is to freeze them. First blanch them for a minute or two in boiling, salted water, and then shock them in an ice-water bath until cool to help maintain their bright color.

Drain and freeze in zip-top bags. They will keep for five to six months.

Peas lend themselves to almost any cooking method and mix well with a variety of flavors. Fresh mint is a classic flavor partner, but feel free to experiment with other fresh spring herbs such as basil, chervil, chives, dill and tarragon. Peas are a natural with onions, scallions and other alliums, and they pair well with other spring vegetables like asparagus, new potatoes, carrots and fava beans. They're delicious as a side dish.

When they're small and tender, peas are great raw in salads. Try this delicious Sweet Pea and Asparagus Salad, and celebrate spring!

SWEET PEA AND ASPARAGUS SALAD • 1/4 cup lemon juice • 1 teaspoon lemon zest • 1/4 cup canola oil, or extra-virgin olive oil • 1 teaspoon sugar, agave or honey • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 2 heads Boston or Bibb lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces • 2 cups very thinly sliced fresh asparagus (about 1 bunch) • 2 cups shelled fresh peas (about 3 pounds unshelled) • 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved • 2 tablespoons minced fresh chives, or scallion greens

Combine lemon juice and zest, oil, sugar or honey, garlic powder, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper in a large salad bowl. Add lettuce, asparagus, peas, tomatoes and chives or the top of a green onion; toss to coat. Serve immediately. HOSPITAL PATIENTS RISK INFECTION Hospital stays can make you sick. A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that one quarter of patients in hospitals get serious infections.

The study of more than 11,000 patients, reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, looked at antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as bacterium clostridium difficile (commonly know as c. diff) and methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a staph infection, being acquired in hospitals. Devices, such as catheters and ventilators, were included as the sources of infection.

The study estimated that more than 700,000 infections were acquired in hospitals in one year alone.

At the root of the massive numbers of antibiotic-resistant infections is the over-prescription of antibiotics, which reduces their effectiveness.

If you're due for hospitalization, be bold about your own

care. The CDC has a poster with these six steps to help avoid hospital infections.

1) Talk to your doctor, ideally before you go into the hospital. Ask what they'll do to protect you against infections. If you have a catheter, will it be changed every day? How can you prepare in advance to guard against infection?

2) If no relatives or friends are around to represent you in the hospital, speak up! If you don't see medical staff washing hands in your room before touching you, assume it wasn't done and say something.

3) Ask if tests have been done to ensure that the right antibiotic is being used.

4) Know the signs of an infection: redness and pain at a surgical site, as well as fever.

5) If you've been taking antibiotics, watch out for diarrhea. Tell your doctor as it could be c. difficile, which can be deadly.

6) Get your flu shots and other vaccinations to prevent infections.

A High-Fat Diet Increases Risk of Breast Cancer

Diet records from 337,327 women over a period of 11.5 years were analyzed for fat content. The women who consumed the most fat had a 20 percent increased risk for ER-positive and PR-positive breast cancer subtypes, and women consuming the most saturated fat faced a 28 percent increased risk for the same breast cancer subtypes, compared with those who consumed the least. Risk of developing HER2-negative breast cancer was 20 percent higher among women consuming the most saturated fat.

Vegetarians and Vegans Have Lower Risk of Heart Disease

Women who eat diets high in fat and saturated fat increase their risk of developing breast cancer, according to a study published by the National Cancer Institute.

Those who consumed a vegetarian/vegan diet had fewer heart disease risk factors including lower blood pressure, half the risk of diabetes, and a 44 percent reduced risk for hypertension, compared with those who consumed pesco-vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets. Additionally, vegetarians and vegans were 43 percent less likely to be obese, compared with non-vegetarians. This study stresses the positive effects plant-based diets may have towards disease prevention for African-Americans.

Copper Associated with Alzheimer’s Disease Copper in foods increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, according to a new study published by the American Neurological Association.

Researchers analyzed several potential risk factors, including age, copper levels, blood pressure, and lipid levels, of 141 participants who had mild cognitive impairment at the start of the study. Treatments Not Same for Toe Joint Pain DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 82-year-old male. In my younger years, I participated vigorously in sports. As a result, I ended up with a degenerated joint in the big toe of my right foot. Forty years ago, the doctors gave me an artificial joint. Prior to the joint installation, I was in severe pain. After the procedure, I had no pain or problems of any kind with the joint.

My oldest daughter has a bad joint in her big toe that gives her a lot of pain, plus problems walking.

Her doctors tell her that they will not replace that joint anymore. Instead they propose to fuse the joint. She would be off her feet for six weeks, and she would have to undergo eight weeks of intensive therapy and learn to walk differently. What's missing here? Why would they not do the procedure for her, when my procedure was so successful? -- A.E.C. ANSWER: First off, not everyone with a "bad joint" in the big toe -- usually a bunion -- needs surgery. Many people get relief from conservative measures, such as shoe modification, orthotics, night splinting and stretching.

However, if pain or difficulty walking persists despite conservative measures, then referral to a foot surgeon is appropriate.

If the hives last more than six weeks, normally you'd get a series of blood tests, with perhaps some additional follow-up testing if necessary. Sometimes the cause is never found.

DOG CAN'T SEEM TO QUENCH THIRST

HAMMERIN' HANK It was 40 years ago this month that Henry Aaron taught the world how to play in style.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My golden retriever mix, "Benny," seems to be drinking a lot more water lately. Every time we're near a water dish or a running tap he is lapping water like crazy. This doesn't seem normal, even though the weather is now much warmer. What could be wrong? -- Lane Y., Columbia, Md.

Four decades ago, Hammerin' Hank showed us how it was done ... but the record books show that, hey, he had been doing it all along. Twenty-five times an All-Star, 15 seasons with 30 or more home runs. All-time home-run leader until some guy named Bonds came along.

DEAR LANE: While it could just be excess thirst due to the hot weather, anytime you feel something is not right with your pet, you should act on that feeling. I recommend taking Benny in to see the veterinarian as soon as possible.

Consistency was and remains his true mantle. For that, he was honored with nearly 98 percent of the ballot for the Hall of Fame. Bonds still ain't there. Neither are McGwire or Sosa. (And what were the 2 percent of voters thinking?)

A number of health issues can cause excessive water drinking among dogs and cats. I'm not going to speculate about Benny's health, because he could be just fine.

Diseases like diabetes can make pets thirsty, as can emergencies like bloat (which can occur in dogs that eat too much at once, and must be dealt with immediately by a veterinarian). A number of other conditions can cause excessive thirst, too.

But we know all that. The picture of Hank rounding the bases and getting a congratulatory slap on the back from a fan in Cincinnati is etched in our minds. But you know what else is etched in our minds? Of course you do. Racism.

The vet will check for any immediate causes of concern, and may do blood tests to determine if anything systemic is going on. If Benny seems OK, he will tell you to keep monitoring his water intake. You may want to keep a journal -- carry around a small notebook or use your smartphone's note-taking app -- to jot down the time and place that Benny takes a drink and how long he drinks. You also might want to note any changes in Benny's coat, his behavior (overly excited or lethargic), or even if everything seems normal.

If Benny's excessive drinking continues or worsens, his overall condition worsens or if you still just don't feel right about how things are going, contact the vet again to continue testing and monitoring him.

Ironic that on April 15, our nation's tax day, things got most taxing. It was two days after a shooting at the Jewish Community Center in Overland Park, Kan. It was one day after we had to detonate suspected bombs at the end of a marathon in Boston. It was Jackie Robinson Day for some, but for others it was just another day to drag the national pastime back into the mud.

And as Aaron surely knew, he was gonna be in that muck,

too. His interview regarding President Barack Obama in USA Today all but sealed his fate.

"Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he's treated," Aaron stated. "We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts."

And like his accolades, it's not necessary to mention how much vitriol and hate his remarks received.

Some thought he was anti-tie. Others thought he was merely cynical or maybe even a bit stupid for wearing a tie himself.

Symbolism is lost on people, apparently.

Hank Aaron erased the biggest asterisk of all-time when he broke Babe Ruth's home-run record ... a record made when black folks didn't even play the game. Yeah, Aaron taught us something 40 years ago. He taught us that for the crime of hitting a ball with a stick you have to endure muggings, assaults, home invasions, thievery and constant threat of personal harm.

Some things, like ignorance, apparently never go out of style.

To check other foods, go online to FoodFraud.org. Put some of the foods you commonly eat into the search box to get lists of foods that might not be what you think they are. Click the little X to the left of each item for the research that revealed the food fraud.

WHEN HONEY ISN'T No matter what we do to keep our families safe, we can't cover all bases all the time ... especially when there are dangers in the food supply.

Example: Honey is supposed to contain the pollen from where it was harvested. If nothing else, that pollen helps investigators trace the honey back to the source if there is a contamination. During any filtering process, harmful additions can be made to the pure product the bees made for us.

According to Food Safety News, the Food and Drug Administration says that filtered honey isn't really honey ... but that no one is checking. Go online to FoodSafetyNews.com for a long list of honey brands that don't contain any pollen at all. FSN conducted tests on honey sold all over the U.S. as a follow-up to its original research. That first round of testing revealed that the 27 countries of the European Union banned shipments of honey from India because it contained animal antibiotics and lead, and likely was shipped to India from China, where the product might contain only a tiny amount of actual honey.

Here are a few other foods to watch: • When you buy a can of tuna, is it really tuna? Or has escolar been mixed in or swapped? Escolar can cause serious intestinal problems.

• If your orange juice is cloudy, it might be an unhealthy filler to deceive you into thinking it's the pulp.

• Milk, coffee, tea and even black pepper are on the top10 list of foods associated with food fraud, according to Mercola.com.

Best bets: • Do as much of your grocery shopping as possible at local vendors and farmers markets. Ask questions.

• Buy whole foods instead of mixes or prepared foods.

With whole foods you can tell whether something else has been mixed in.

Older Americans Month: Safe Today, Healthy Tomorrow In observance of Older Americans Month, Shari Baer, the Public Education Coordinator, of the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Broward, will be talking about Senior safety, including avoiding fraud and scams.

For the past 8 weeks, 13-15 youth came together at the Dania Beach PATCH Market Garden for the opportunity to experience that same joy through Earn-A-Bike, FLIPANY's new program that teaches kids to take apart and re-build a donated bicycle.

The students gained valuable skills in leadership and teamwork during the eight-week program and this Saturday, April 26th they will graduate with a functioning bike that they will own and use for transportation and physical activity.

Earn-A-Bike is a hands-on learning and earning program for underprivileged youth ages 10-17. Over the course of 8 sessions, participants learn the basics of bike repair, maintenance and safe riding while refurbishing an abandoned bike or fixing their own broken bike.

Program Objectives: Youth will gain hands-on experience working with a bike mechanic to rebuild a bike.

Q: My mother's house has an old wooden swing on the front porch that we enjoyed as kids. But it doesn't look very safe anymore -- the wood seems to be rotting, the paint has mostly peeled off, and it doesn't swing straight. Is it worth convincing her to replace it? -- David H., via email

Have a construction professional who specializes in outside attachments like decks and porches inspect and evaluate the condition of the porch. Tell him your plans to replace the swing and ask about the best places from which to anchor it.

A: That depends on a couple of factors, besides convincing your mom to let you replace it. One, is there enough interest among the family to continue to have a porch swing? And two, is the porch structurally sound enough to safely put up a new swing?

Another option: If the porch doesn't check out, or if you or your mom simply don't want a swing on the porch, try a freestanding swing in the yard. Again, look for a sturdy, durable model with good supports that will stand up to outdoor weather for several years.

The reason I ask is that older homes, while probably pretty sturdy, may have developed hidden problems structurally. Porches usually are built outside any load-bearing points and so don't present a threat to the house itself, but they are sometimes built with less-durable materials and therefore deteriorate faster. There's nothing more embarrassing than putting up a sturdy, heavy porch swing only to have to anchor bolts tear out of a rotting beam, dumping out the swing's occupants.

HOME TIP: Want to paint a wooden porch swing? Be sure to use exterior grade paint or paint specially formulated for outdoor porches.
