Peppermint oil can even repel annoying bugs!

• Saffron is the world’s most expensive spice and has been used in trade for more than 4,000 years.

It comes from the dried threads of the saffron crocus plant, which grows to a height of 8 to 12 inches (2030 cm) and bears only four flowers. One pound (450 g) of dry saffron requires 50,000 to 75,000 flowers, with 40 hours of labor needed to pick 150,000 flowers. Retail prices for saffron can spike as high as $5,000 per pound. Some medical studies suggest that this spice has antioxidant and cancer-suppressing properties and might also be helpful in treating depression. In the kitchen, it’s used in Indian and Pakistani sweet dishes and Italian risotto. It’s also used in religious rituals in India.

• Vanilla is second most expensive spice after saffron.

It’s no wonder vanilla is an expensive commodity when you consider the labor required to process it.

It comes from the pod of the only fruit-bearing orchid plant, with a waiting period of three years after being planted before the first flowers appear. The flower opens only one day a year, and each one is hand-pollinated in order to produce a pod. Those pods remain on the vine for another nine months and when harvested, have no flavor or fragrance.

Those qualities develop during the extensive curing process, when the pods are treated with hot water before being placed in the sun for months.

• Vanilla takes its name from the Spanish word Vaina, which translates “little pod.” Vanilla extract is made by finely chopping the beans and dripping alcohol on the pieces.

• Nutmeg is harvested from the seeds of the fruit of the large evergreen nutmeg tree, native to the West Indies. This tree grows to a height of about 60 feet (18.3 m), and yields both nutmeg and mace.

The seeds are grated to produce nutmeg, while mace comes from the lacy threads that surround the seed. Nutmeg may spice up your desserts, but its medicinal uses are many.

Ancient Chinese medicine called for using its oil for digestive ailments, relieving inflammation, and reducing joint pain. Nutmeg is a good source of Vitamin C, many B-complex vitamins, copper, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc.

Some claim it promotes a restful night’s sleep when steamed and inhaled. Nutmeg contains the same essential oil as cloves, eugenol, that can be used for toothache relief.

• Sweet aromatic cloves are used in baking and flavoring meats such as ham and lamb, as well as serving as an anesthetic for a toothache.

Eugenol oil can also reduce blood sugar in diabetics and

help relieve indigestion. Naturopaths claim that rubbing a mixture of oil of cloves and mustard into aching joints and muscles will reduce pain. Some people say that drinking water in which a few cloves have been boiled will help relieve a cough.

• Cinnamon, one of the oldest known spices, comes from the bark of a cinnamon tree, bark that must be processed immediately after harvesting, while it is still wet. Cinnamon was a gift fit for a king in ancient times, and in Rome, a pound of the spice was worth ten months’ wages. It’s been shown to help with indigestion and upset stomach. Diabetics will be happy to know that cinnamon seems to contribute to reduced blood glucose levels and increased insulin production. Some studies indicate that it promotes lower cholesterol and relief of arthritis pain.

• The Scoville scale was developed by Wilbur Scoville in 1912 to measure the hotness of a food item. A food’s number is based on its concentration of the alkaloid compound capsaicin, which is what gives a strong pungent flavor. The hotness of cayenne pepper measures about 50,000 Scoville Heat Units. (Compare this to the Carolina Reaper pepper which averages 1,569,300 SHU’s!) Cayenne comes from a small

shrub about 39 inches (100 cm) tall, and is considered the best source of Vitamin A of all spices, as well as being rich in anti-oxidants.

Studies indicate that capsaicin has anti-carcinogenic and anti-diabetic properties. Cayenne has been successful in treating arthritis, sore muscles, and digestive ailments, as well as improving blood circulation.

• We usually think of oregano as an herb to flavor our tomato sauces and Italian dishes. That is the Mediterranean species of oregano, which is a member of the mint family.

It grows in Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco, and has a strong, robust flavor. However, there is another completely different variety, Mexican oregano, a relative of lemon verbena, which has more of a citrusy licorice taste. The USDA tells

us that one tablespoon of fresh oregano has just as much antioxidant properties as an apple.

• If you’re cooking Mexican food, coriander, cumin, and cilantro are essential. Coriander actually comes from the seeds of the cilantro plant. While fresh cilantro will offer a bolder flavor, coriander adds more of a subtle taste.

• When the dried fruit of the sweet red pepper Capsicum annuum is ground, the result is a red powder we know as paprika. We use it to season stews, soups, and sausages, particularly in Hungarian foods. It’s grown mainly in Spain, South America, California, and, of course, Hungary.

• Why doesn’t our list include salt? Because salt is a mineral, not an herb or spice!

PETER JENNINGS • Jennings was anxious to follow his father into broadcasting, but took a job as a bank teller at the Royal Bank of Canada. He got a break in his early 20s when he landed a job hosting a Canadian music program called “Club Thirteen,” followed by a teen dance show similar to “American Bandstand” called “Saturday Date.”

• Peter Jennings was one of the most trusted and respected news anchors in the history of television news. As the son of a noted Canadian Broadcasting Company journalist, Peter got his start in broadcasting at age 9, hosting his own radio program, “Peter’s People,” on a Toronto station.

• Although a gifted broadcaster, Jennings was not a gifted student. He admitted that his failure to pass 10th grade was due to “pure boredom.”

In an interview he remarked, “I loved girls, I loved comic books. I was pretty lazy.” He dropped out at age 17, and although he tried to attend Carleton University a few years later, in his words, he “lasted about 10 minutes.”

• At age 24, Jennings was given the co-anchor position of a Canadian late-night national news broadcast, ironically, in competition with his father’s network. At 25, he was the first Canadian journalist to arrive in Dallas after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. After two years as anchor, he moved to the States for a position with ABC News. The following year, he was the anchor opposite the time slots of news greats, CBS’s Walter Cronkite and NBC’s David Brinkley.

• Jennings was present at nearly every historic event during his tenure, including not only the building of the Berlin Wall in the 1960s, but also its fall in 1989. He was one of the first journalists to report from Vietnam, and was on hand at the 1972 Munich Olympics when terrorists attacked Israeli athletes. We heard about the space shuttle Challenger disaster and the Gulf War from Jennings. During the September 11th attacks in 2001, Jennings was at his anchor desk for 17 straight hours. After the tragedy, claiming a “deeper sense of connection to the United States,” he began studying for the citizenship test, and in 2003, he obtained dual citizenship, U.S. and Canadian.

• Jennings took on a new challenge two years later when he shifted to a job as a foreign correspondent. He set up ABC’s news bureau in Beirut, the first TV news bureau

• In April, 2005, Jennings announced to viewers that he had lung cancer and would immediately begin chemotherapy. Just four months later, he succumbed to the disease.

GARLIC In keeping with our theme of spices, Tidbits now zeroes in on the culinary and medicinal benefits of garlic.

• Garlic, or Allium sativum, is a member of the onion genus, along with shallots, leeks, and chives. A full-grown garlic plant is about 24 inches (60 cm) tall and yields between 8 and 20 bulbs. It’s one of the oldest cultivated food plants, and its use dates back over 7,000 years.

Pictures of garlic have been found on ancient Egyptian tombs and the Greek physician Hippocrates promoted its therapeutic benefits for respiratory and digestion problems, low energy, and eliminating parasites. Olympic athletes in ancient Greece were fed garlic, probably to enhance their performance.

• The list of the health benefits of garlic goes on and on.

Research has shown the cardiovascular benefits of garlic, as well as a reduction in cholesterol levels. It seems to help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent complications of diabetes. It has antifungal, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, and was used as an antiseptic to prevent gangrene during World Wars I and II. In a study conducted by China’s Center for Disease Control, people who ate raw garlic twice a week had a 44% lower risk of developing lung cancer. Some naturopaths advocate its use for the prevention of prostate, breast, stomach, and colon cancers.

• Of course, the downside of ingesting large quantities of garlic is halitosis – bad breath! – as well as sweat that has a pungent smell. This is cause by Allyl Methyl Sulfide, a sulfur-containing gas that is released when you eat garlic.

• Helsinki, Finland is home to Kynsilaukka, a restaurant that caters to garlic lovers. Even its name translates to “clove leek.” They serve all things garlic, including beer, ice cream, and cheesecake. In the U.S., San Francisco boasts “The Stinking Rose,” a restaurant where every menu item features garlic.

No wonder their marketing slogan is “Follow your nose to the Stinking Rose.”

• Garlic isn’t just for seasoning and medicinal benefits.

Even the sticky juice found within the bulb cloves is useful as an adhesive in mending glass and porcelain.

• If you don’t have fresh garlic for your recipes, garlic powder can be used, although it does have a different taste. If you do substitute the powder for the fresh, 1/8 teaspoon of garlic powder is the equivalent of one clove of fresh garlic.

• Much of the U.S.’s garlic supply is produced in and around Gilroy, California, which has been dubbed “Garlic Capital of the world.” A single farm in the area produces nearly 25 million pounds (11,340,000 kg) annually.

Every July, this community of 50,000 hosts the Gilroy Garlic Festival, a celebration that has raised almost $9 million for assorted local charities since its founding in 1979.

• Although Gilroy calls itself the garlic capital, it’s nowhere near the world’s top producer. Over 77% of the world’s garlic is grown in China, about 23 billion pounds (10.4 billion kg) worth. India is a distant second with 4.1%, followed by South Korea at 2%. The U.S. produces just 1.6% of the world’s garlic, with some grown in every state except Alaska.

• It was novelist Tom Clancy who made the following sage observation: "The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense."

A: You don't have to wait much longer. The supernatural drama that centers on the lives of the Beauchamp witches (Joanna, Freya, Ingrid and Wendy) will return for a 13-episode second season on Wednesday, July 9, at 9/8c. I spoke with Eric Winter, who plays the dashing Dash Gardiner. At the end of season one, Dash had his heart broken by Freya and his previously unknown warlock powers returned to him upon the death of his mother, Penelope (played by Virginia Madsen).

Eric gave me some hints about season two, the main one being to look for a darker, ticked-off Dash this season.

"I thought that my brother and I were very underused last year. I'm happy to see that this year we are being used, I think, more correctly -- you're going to get a nice well-rounded cast and interaction of story lines now. This second season, there is a massive change in character for Dash; he does a complete 180. For me, personally, it's a much more exciting role to play. Last year set something up, and it was needed to tell the story, but it played on long enough, and I'm excited to explore more of Dash this season."

Eric also told me about the addition of Christian Cooke, as Fredrick Beauchamp (Joanna's son, who until now had been in Asgard): "He definitely brings a nice strong, edgy young energy to the show. There's a bit of tension between him and Aunt Wendy, and also in forming a relationship with his sisters. It definitely adds a nice additional layer to that family dynamic -- having that male energy thrown in there out of nowhere, when they didn't know it existed." *** Q: Will "Downton Abbey" ever come back? -- Hope M., via email A: The popular Masterpiece Classic period drama -which airs on ITV in England and on PBS in the U.S. -will return for a fifth season in January 2015. It does air first across the pond (which should be sometime this fall), so try to stay away from spoilers, if you can, until it airs here in America.

• Charlie Chan, the fictional Honolulu detective, was created in 1919 by novelist Earl Derr Biggers. The books featuring Chan became so popular that the character made the leap to radio, movies and television. "The Fights on the Little Horn: Unveiling the Mysteries of Custer's Last Stand"

by Gordon Harper (Casemate Books, $32.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Gordon Harper was 20 years old and a minor-league baseball player when he mistakenly got off a bus at the Little Horn battlefield instead of his intended destination. That mistake changed the course of his life. He became so captivated by the site that he moved nearby and spent the next 50 years studying every aspect of one of America's most storied disasters, the defeat of Gen. George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry at the hands of the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians in June 1876 in eastern Montana Territory.

One of the first things Harper noted is that the battle actually occurred along the Little Horn River, not the Big Horn, which was several miles away. The term "Battle of the Little Big Horn" has, consequently, always been a misnomer.

Harper spent countless hours on the battlefield, documenting the event from both sides, white and Indian. As he re-created every aspect of the battle as authoritatively as he could, he began to dispel many myths and falsehoods while establishing a clearer, more accurate account.

By the time of Harper's death, he had completed a manuscript of more than 1,700 pages. This work featured Indian accounts, an analysis of forensic evidence and even the exact location of where each doomed fighter fell. His 2 million words of research reveal to readers his key findings, and make the exact course of the battle accessible. For example, he traces the mysterious activities of Frederick Benteen's battalion that fateful day, and why it never came to reinforce Custer's command.

Harper's manuscript has been edited to some 380 pages, but it nevertheless provides a rich, well-documented narrative that surely will become one of the definitive sources of this bloody event. Early colonists believed tomatoes to be poisonous, as the plant is a member of the nightshade family, which has some poisonous species. Fortunately for us, at some point in our agricultural history, a brave forager discovered that tomatoes would not kill you. By 1824, there were 17 recipes for tomatoes included in one of the first American cookbooks, "The Virginia Housewife" by Mary Randolph. It included a recipe for "Gaspacha," a dish from Spain. So how did it get to Virginia? Food historian Karen Hess says that Mary Randolph's sister lived in Spain and probably passed it on to her.

Gazpacho is a cold tomato soup associated with Spanish cuisine, with its beginnings traced back to the Andalusian region. Interestingly, a fundamental ingredient of this ancient soup, with versions dating to early Greece and Rome, is not tomato, but bread. Many early recipes for gazpacho are a white version containing bread, water, garlic, vinegar and oil. These primitive recipes represent a poetic example of the beginnings of the art of food, of making something delicious out of almost nothing. Around the 16th century, tomato seeds arrived in Spain.

Since then, red gazpacho, made delicious with the absolute best tomatoes, has become the most popular version.

ONCE BITTEN, FOREVER LOVED It's that time of the year -- the season of the tomato! Red, green or gold ... sweet or tart ... but always plump and juicy, just-ripe tomatoes are what we dream of when the season is lean and the weather cold. And many of us, picky, and with strict standards about the quality of our fresh tomatoes, often just do without, or open a can and count the days. Yes, there are greenhouse tomatoes and hydroponic tomatoes, and with sunny weather somewhere, there's always a supply. Still, tomatoes at the peak of their early summer best are unmatched.

Although the Italians have been growing tomatoes since the 1500s, you might be surprised to learn that tomatoes are native to the Americas, specifically South America. The word tomato is a modification of "tomati," a word used by the Indians of Mexico. Many historians believe Thomas Jefferson brought tomato seeds back from Europe to plant at Monticello, although it's not entirely clear. It is documented, though, that Jefferson grew and served tomatoes at his Virginia estate.

Like so many popular foods, gazpacho can have a bad image when presented as a bland bowl of tomato juice or an equally disappointing combination of chopped unripe tomatoes and spongy cucumbers. The real deal is a celebration of freshness and simplicity. In the summertime, when the star of this dish is at its peak and the heat can discourage even going near a stove, it's time to give my recipe for Gazpacho with Avocado and Bell Pepper Relish a try.

SPANISH GAZPACHO WITH RELISH • 2 pounds ripe tomatoes, peeled, seeded and coarsely chopped; or one 28-ounce can quality plum tomatoes, chopped • 1 medium onion, preferably a sweet variety such as Vidalia or Walla Walla, coarsely chopped • 1 large cucumber, peeled • 2 slices of country-style white bread, crust removed • 1 1/4 cups blanched slivered almonds • 1/2 green bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped • 1/2 red bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped • 2 scallions or green onions, coarsely chopped • 3 garlic cloves

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon Spanish paprika 1/2 teaspoon sugar or sugar substitute 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 tablespoons sherry vinegar or balsamic vinegar 1 to 2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce 1/2 chilled tomato juice or cold water, as needed

1. In a large bowl, stir together tomatoes, onion, cucumber, bread, almonds, bell peppers, scallions, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika and sugar. Working in 2 cup batches, whirl the mixture in a blender until finely chopped but not pureed.

2. Return mixture to the bowl and stir in oil, vinegar and hot pepper sauce. Add enough chilled tomato juice or cold water, a tablespoon at a time, to make the gazpacho soupy but not too thin.

3. Cover bowl and refrigerate soup until very cold, at least a couple of hours or up to 2 days. Stir gazpacho and ladle into bowls, or pour it at the table from a wide-mouth pitcher.

Garnish with Avocado and Bell Pepper Relish. Serves 6 to 8.

AVOCADO AND BELL PEPPER RELISH • 1 ripe peeled avocado, diced • 1/4 cup finely chopped red bell pepper • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro • 1 tablespoon finely chopped purple onion 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice Mix all ingredients together until well-combined. • Drink plenty of water. Some of our drugs can be dehydrating; ask your doctor if your prescriptions mean you should drink more water. Ask him how much liquid you should drink during hot weather, especially if your intake is limited because of water retention. Remember that drinks with caffeine (such as tea or coffee) can be dehydrating, as well as alcoholic beverages or sugary drinks like sodas.

• Dress in lightweight clothing. Wear a hat if you go outside.

KEEP YOUR COOL Everyone needs to take steps to stay safe in hot weather, but seniors especially need to be careful. Our internal "temperature gauge" doesn't work the way it used to, and becoming overheated can sneak up on us, with dehydration right on its heels.

Here are a few ways to stay cool in summer: • If you have air conditioning, use it. Keep an eye on the heat index (temperature plus humidity) on the weather news. The higher the humidity, the less we're able to sweat and let air evaporation cool us.

• Go somewhere cool in the middle of the day, such as the library or a nearby coffee shop that has air conditioning. Find out from your senior center if there are cooling centers in your area where you can go for a few hours.

• Put a cool, damp washcloth on pulse points, like wrist and neck. Take a cool shower.

• Sign up with a seniors phone service that will check on you, or arrange with friends and family to stay in close contact during hot weather.

• Keep an eye on the symptoms of heat exhaustion: clammy skin, fainting, nausea, muscle cramps and weakness. Call for help if you experience any of these, because they can lead to heat stroke if not taken care of.

Diabetes Toll Worsens In 2012, 29.1 million Americans had diabetes and 86 million adults had pre-diabetes, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2010, these statistics were 25.8 and 79 million, respectively. Diabetes patients are at an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, blindness, kidney disease, and amputations, among other complications. The estimated annual cost of diabetes is $245 billion. Soy Does Not Affect Puberty Soy products do not affect onset of menarche for girls, according to a new study in the Nutrition Journal. Fat Linked to Breast Cancer Risk A high-fat, high-cholesterol diet increases the risk for breast cancer, according to a study published in Breast Cancer Research and Treatment. Results showed that a diet high in animal fat increased the risk for breast cancer by 18 percent among all women and 21 percent among postmenopausal women.

Dietary cholesterol increased the risk for developing breast cancer by 32 percent among premenopausal women. Saturated fat and monounsaturated fat also increased the risk for developing breast cancer. This study supports recent findings by the National Cancer Institute. Heart attacks are three times more likely in the morning than in the evening, and 15 percent to 20 percent more likely on Mondays than on other days. Nobody knows exactly why. THE ZEN OF ZIM 6-YEAR-OLD WANTS TO TRAIN ELEPHANTS

Imagine this scenario happening to you: You've worked all your life for a major company. In the early stages of your career you suffered not one but two debilitating work-related injuries. Rather than suing the company or sitting on your couch collecting workman's comp, you not only go back to work immediately, you become the catalyst for sweeping safety changes at the company.

Though you liked working on the docks, time conspired against you physically and you were "forced" into management. You are respected by your peers, but one day -- a Monday to be exact and only three months on the job in a new division of the company -- your boss informs you that you are fired effective two days from now. When you ask why, he tells you it was something "personal."

Then he tells you that he scheduled a press conference in the next room and he wants you to attend. Oh ... and it's in five minutes.

Some of you would have been stunned and attended the press conference. You acted polite and held yourself together. (You're also the type of person who thanks the cop who just wrote you a ticket, aren't ya?)

The rest of you would have cursed the boss out, grabbed the nearest box of copy paper, dumped said paper over the boss's head or desk, collected a few staplers, paper clips and outdated pictures of your wife when she was still known as your hot girlfriend and gone to happy hour(s).

But if you were Don Zimmer, you'd go to the press conference, shrug and say, "no ... hell no" when reporters asked if you understood why you were being fired. Then you'd laugh, pack up your stuff, go to happy hour, manage the team until Wednesday and move on to manage the Boston Red Sox for a few memorable seasons.

Zimmer got his start playing with "The Boys of Summer," the championship Dodgers team of the '50s. He also was a member of the 120-game losing 1962 New York Mets.

He married his high-school sweetheart at home plate

between games of a doubleheader.

He was once beaned so hard in the head that he ended up in a coma for 13 days. As a result, Zimmer carried around four titanium screws in his skull for the rest of his life. Another result of the accident was the introduction of the batting helmet in Major League Baseball. He never made a dime outside of the constructs of MLB. Zimmer passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 83.

His 66 years of baseball knowledge and lore may be gone, but as the luminaries who assembled in Tampa Bay to pay their final respects to this humble, loveable man surely can attest -- guys like Joe Torre, Tommy Lasorda and Lou Piniella, to name a few -- he left a lifetime of baseball memories in his wake.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My 6-year-old son, after a class trip to the circus, has informed me that he wants to be an elephant trainer when he grows up. I'm personally against keeping any animal in captivity, particularly endangered elephants, and certainly against training them to perform.

When I told my son "no way," he got upset and ran to his room. How can I make him understand that elephant trainer is a horrible career choice? -- Jayne L., via email DEAR JAYNE: OK, first, remind yourself that your son is 6 years old. Kids at that age cycle through a lot of exciting career choices: fireman, policeman, trapeze artist, cowboy -- a lot of things capture their fancy.

While I respect your stance on performing animals, I think saying a flat "no" to your son isn't the best way to go about it. At 6, he's old enough for you to have a conversation with him about your opposition to trained elephants.

You also can encourage him to explore other ways to work with animals while he's still fascinated with the subject. Take him to visit a local nature preserve or conservation center, and join a tour group or talk with one of the staff about the work they do with local animals.

Look for age-appropriate kids' programming -- DVDs, cable TV or on services like Netflix -- that discusses efforts to protect endangered elephants and other wild animals.

In short, your son is beginning to explore the world and his place in it. You can figuratively slam the door on career options that you abhor, or you can be his guide and help him think through certain issues and learn more about ways to help animals.

• External drives are a good bet and come in all sizes and prices. However, if a glitch takes out your computer, it could affect the external hard drive as well. In the event of a catastrophe (tornado, fire), you can grab the drive and go.

• If you're on a home network, moving all your data to another computer is easy enough, but again, if a glitch hits the first computer, it also might strike your second computer.

• Remember to do your backups. If you make a habit of backing up at the end of each day, in a crisis situation you'll only lose what you've done that day.

• If you go with an external hard drive, many of them come with software that will automate your backups.

Schedule it to copy your files daily and then check once a week to be sure those downloads happened and that you can reacquire a file or two. If your data is for work (or if you're writing a thesis or novel), schedule more frequent backups. Every five minutes is not too much.

Best bet: Back up your data via two methods, one of which stores your data in a different location.

HOMELESS NEW OPEN DOOR PROJECT HELPS INDIVIDUALS NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TRADITIONAL SHELTERS (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) – At a special event that took place on June 11, The Salvation Army, which has been serving human needs in Broward County since 1926, announced a new program designed to offer overnight shelter to chronically homeless individuals who are not eligible for acceptance into traditional shelters.

Guest speakers included Ft. Lauderdale Vice Mayor Romney Rogers, Lewis Goldberg from Representative Alcee Hastings office and Michael Wright from the Broward Homeless Initiative Partnership.

Many of these homeless men and women who will stay at the shelter have lost trust in the “system.” The Salvation Army’s Open Door Project is a low demand shelter, which removes the stringent requirements of most homeless facilities. With this more forgiving housing option,

individuals who may be suffering from alcohol or drug abuse, even mental illness, are given a safer alternative to sleeping on the streets.

“Open Door is a harm reduction measure,” explained Area Commander Captain Luis Viera. “Although individuals are not allowed to engage in drug or alcohol activities on site, they will not be turned away because of their usage.

“We know from experience that no one wants to be homeless. Our hope is that over time and in small increments clients will begin to develop trust in caseworkers and may be willing to take advantage of services offered that will help them attain permanent housing.”

The Open Door Project, which is located on the Salvation Army campus at 1445 West Broward Boulevard

near downtown Fort Lauderdale, will include beds for up to 45 adult men and women and breakfast.

“The ultimate goal of this program is to provide safety, build trust and reduce the number of people sleeping on the streets of downtown Ft. Lauderdale,” said Curt Nichols, member of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army of Broward County.

Although basic, these new accommodations are costing the Salvation Army more than $200,000, funds that will be raised through private donations.

“Most shelters require guests to provide an array of personal data,” explained Captain Viera. “For some homeless people, especially those who have been on the street for a length of time, a lack of trust keeps them from seeking shelter.”

The Open Door Project, according to Captain Viera, will benefit the community at large by giving homeless individuals previously thought to be hopeless a warm place to stay and an opportunity to move forward. Getting people off of the streets at night also helps to reduce medical emergencies and police encounters. On any given night, according to the Salvation Army, more than 800 people are sleeping on the streets. More than 50 percent of the unsheltered homeless people are located in the neighborhoods bordering and leading into the downtown Fort Lauderdale area.

In addition to housing homeless people, a food pantry supplies groceries to over 100 people each week and rent/mortgage assistance helps families in emergency situations avoid homelessness. Senior citizens enjoy weekly Home League programs and the holidays allow the agency to supply Christmas toys and cheer to 3400 children and Thanksgiving dinner to 400 needy people.

Or, if you're just going to clean the outside, you can lever it out until it lies flat, clean it and put it back into place.

The other common type is a sash held in place by removable hardware, like sash stops at the top of the track. After removing or shifting retaining clips, the sash is lifted past its normal opening point and away from its bottom balancers or guides, and then levered out from one side and then the other.

ONE-SIDED WINDOWS WON'T COME CLEAN Q: I clean my apartment windows every week, but I can't clean the outside. If I lift the window and reach around outside, I can just get the bottom part of the window. We're in an upstairs unit, so I can't reach them from outside. Any solutions?

A: It sounds like you have single-hung windows, which have a bottom sash that can be lifted up, while the top window is sealed into the frame. Double-hung windows can be opened at either the top or bottom.

Single-hung windows are designed so that the bottom sash can be removed for cleaning or replacement. How they're removed varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but there are a couple of methods that are pretty much the same.

The simplest type to remove, in my opinion, is a sash that has slide-backs along the top so you can easily pull in its top retainer clips and lever the top of the sash out of the frame toward you. From there it can be disengaged from the slider connections at the bottom and maneuvered out of the frame.

Doing this weekly may not be fun -- lifting the sash out of some windows can be somewhat frustrating, and there's always a risk of damaging the hardware, like the balancers or sash stops. So clean the outside windows only a couple of times a year, or when they are noticeably dirty.

What's the best way to quickly clean windows, especially the grimier outside? Add a little bit of dishwashing liquid to a lot of warm water, and use a big sponge to apply the suds. This loosens dirt much better than ammonia cleaner and paper towels. Swipe away the suds with a window squeegee (available at home-improvement stores or in many home-goods stores), cleaning the blade after each swipe, and wipe the corners of the window with a lint-free rag.

HOME TIP: Streaky window glass? Dampen the panes with cleaning spray or slightly soapy water, then dry with old newspapers.

Pre-bag snack sizes of carrots, celery, strawberries, grapes, cantaloupe and apples. Pre-cut veggies for meals to make later in the week. Slice tomatoes and onions for sandwiches, and tear and separate lettuce for salads. They all make great, healthy treats, and it makes it easier to get your recommended servings!

A brand-new study tallies the rate of obesity in the United States at nearly a third of the population, over 87 million Americans. Not only do all of us suffer terrible hits to our self-esteem, but there are the physical dangers of that excess poundage: diabetes, heart problems, cancer, the list goes on.

Obesity itself is a disease, often brought on by an addiction not just to food but, more insidiously, to the toxic concoctions the processors prepare and constantly advertise.

Any attempts to intervene are crushed by the conglomerates that make massive profits by pushing their narcotic morsels on us. They particularly target our children.

One would think that the first lady's "Let's Move" campaign and its stated goal of helping our young people get fit would not be all that controversial. What would make more sense than replacing unhealthy fare with healthy? No deep-fried stuff, no empty calories. Instead, offer up tasty, nutritious choices. But the purveyors of the bad stuff don't like that. So they've enlisted their buddies in Congress to take "Let's Move" and stop it dead in its tracks.

Educators -- some of them, anyway -- have been recruited to complain that the kiddies just won't eat their veggies and fruits. They want pizza with tomato sauce to be declared a vegetable. Their resistance is amplified in Washington by school-nutrition associations that claim

That's all the House Republicans need. So now they're trying to pass legislation that would allow local districts to get a waiver from requirements that they serve healthy meals. Pardon the pun, but that would gut the campaign.

To her credit, Ms. Obama is fighting back -- or, in this case, writing back. There she was on The New York Times oped page telling us that "Our kids deserve so much more than this." She was referring to the usual game that our politicians play where the well-being of citizens is completely ignored.

Obesity is right up there with cigarette smoking when it comes to habits that can kill us, habits that are incredibly difficult to break. Clearly, though, the better way would be to develop healthy eating routines in our children, which, along with encouraging exercise is what "Let's Move" is about.
