• Canadian Theodore Witte of Chilliwhack, BC, was pretty good at home repairs but he sure got tired of trying to smooth out putty around windows using a putty knife. One day in 1894, he was at the bakery, watching a baker put icing on a cake using a cake decorator’s gun to force the frosting into a smooth, controllable line. Why couldn’t putty be that easy? Witte went home and designed what he called a “puttying tool” that allowed putty to be applied in one continuous smooth seam. Unfortunately, the putty industry didn’t pay much attention and Witte never made much money from his invention, today known as the caulking gun.
• The word 'smith' comes from the Saxon word which means 'to smite.' In the olden days, a smith was anyone who worked with a hammer, whether he was hammering wood, metal, or stone. Thus there were blacksmiths, clocksmiths, coppersmiths, goldsmiths, gunsmiths, locksmiths, silversmiths, and so on. And since all these smiths needed a hammer, there were also hammersmiths.

QUICK QUIRK QUIZ: A NEW SCREW • Henry, a businessman from Portland, Oregon, noted that sometimes screws and screwdrivers just didn’t work like they should. They were fine for home repairs and general carpentry, but there were problems when it came to assembly lines. In the 1930s, automobile manufacturers were screwing millions of screws per minute with power screwdrivers. With power tools, not only was it difficult to fit the screwdriver into the slot of a standard screw, but centrifugal force tended to force the screwdriver to slide out of the slot. Once the standard screw was screwed in all the way, the power screwdriver continued to spin, which either stripped the screw, stalled the screwdriver, or damaged the part. …turn the page for more 7,500+ in stock or custom made. • Henry invented a screw with a cross-shaped slot that could be driven with more torque and would hold tighter than regular slotted screws. He named it after himself. His new screwdriver, with its pointed tip, engaged the screw much more easily and did not slip out. The indentation in the screw was so shallow that when the screw was finished screwing, the screwdriver tip simply popped out. • The new screw was first used in building the 1936 Cadillac and proved so effective that within two years all car manufacturers had switched. In 1936 Henry received patents for both the screw and the screwdriver, but it was so widely copied that he lost the patent in 1949. Henry died in 1958 at age 68 after seeing his screwnamed after his last namebecome an industry standard. What was his name? (answer at top of next page)

to all the company executives at headquarters in Chicago. Nearly a year went by and Peter assumed no one was interested in his invention. Then a lawyer came to visit Peter. • He informed the youth that Sears was prepared to offer him two cents for every one of his ratchet wrenches they sold- with the stipulation that they would not owe him any further royalties after $10,000. He said it might take Peter years to collect the maximum amount of the royalties owed him. Peter signed the patent over to Sears. A year later he was amazed to receive the entire $10,000 in a single check. • Suspecting that he had been taken, Peter went to court. His lawyer argued that Sears was guilty of fraud by leading Peter to believe that they would only be able to sell a few wrenches per year when in reality they had sold over a million. He also pointed out that Peter had been a minor when he signed the contract. The judge agreed. Not only did he award Peter Roberts damages of around a million bucks, but he also gave Peter the patent back.

ples to New York City cops, who gave him rave reviews. Within a few years Hubert was a millionaire. • In 1914 the National Carbon Company (which supplied Hubert with his materials) bought half interest in the company, and the name of the firm was changed. Production of the batteries used in flashlights overtook production of flashlights. During the Great Depression, advertisements for the company consistently depicted a child, a pet, and a flashlight in various Norman Rockwell-like situations. One such ad showed a young girl checking on a litter of nine kittens using her flashlight. This image became so popular that thousands of posters were sold, giving the company a new icon: a cat with nine lives. What is the name of the company? (Answer at top of next page.)

RACHET WRENCH • Before 1964, there were socket sets but the old-fashioned socket wrench that went with the set had to be twisted endlessly. In 1964, an 18-year-old kid named Peter Roberts was tinkering around in his dad’s garage. His father repaired lawn mowers in his spare time and sometimes Peter helped him out. • One day Peter decided that repairing lawn mowers would be a lot easier if only the socket wrench had a button that would release the socket from the grip of the wrench. He made one up himself, and it worked. The ratchet wrench was born. • Peter, who was a junior in high school, worked parttime at the local Sears store. He took the new wrench to show his boss, who showed it to his boss, who showed it

NORMAN BREAKEY • Norman James Breakey was born February 25th, 1891 in Pierson, Manitoba. Around 1940, he came up with an idea that would make painting large areas much easier. • At the time, the standard paint brush was the only method available, and the labor was difficult: "Take a paint brush in your right hand, or your left hand if you are left handed, or both hands if it is a big brush. Dip the brush into a can of paint and raise it above your head, being careful not to let the paint roll down your arm. Dab it on the ceiling, repeat the process hundreds of times. Then—take a bath." Norman Breakey devised a cylinder covered in fabric that picked up more paint than a brush. It was the pre-curser to the modern paint roller. • Breakey approached Tom Hamilton, an executive for A.B. Caya Fabrics, for advice on what type of fabric to use to cover his roller. Years later, Hamilton recalled: "He wanted my opinion on the best kind of fabric that offered a stiff bristly nap. I asked for what purpose, and he said 'For rolling paint.' I scratched my head at that but he resolutely went on and described to me something with a handle shaped like a '7' that would hold a cardboard, fabric-covered cylinder. 'If my theory is right this thing will revolutionize painting in Canada,' he said. Well, the best thing I could think of was that bristly green mohair velour that was used to cover railway touring coaches in those days. So I sold him a bolt of that, told him how to cut it on the bias, suggested some glues and away he went, beaming out the door. Later he came by and thanked me for my advice. He gave me one of his original rollers and a tray that had been hammered out
by a local tinsmith. Neither of us knew then how big his invention would get to be." • Unfortunately, Breakey lacked the money to produce a significant supply of rollers on his own. Attempts to persuade investors to back him failed. Meanwhile, people started tinkering with the design, altering it just enough to that they were able to apply for their own patents. • When hogs' hair bristles became scarce during World War II, an inventor named Richard Croxton Adams working for Sherwin-Williams in Cleveland, Ohio, made a paint roller called a "Roller-Koater" that did not use bristles. Adams became the first U.S. patent holder for a paint roller. • At least one account claims Breakey died poor and unknown not long after he came up with his invention. He went without public notice until 1967, when he was listed in both the inventors volume of McClelland & Stewart’s Canadian Centennial Library and a Maclean’s feature called “Who’s Who of Canadian What’s His Names.” Breakey may have been under-heralded in life, but his work has aided generations of painters. • Here are some tips for the next time you use one of Norman Breakey's rollers: Use a lint roller on your paint roller to get loose bits of fuzz off it prior to painting. Use a Swiffer on your walls to collect dust before painting. Line your paint tray with a plastic bag so you won't have to clean it, then put the paint tray inside a cardboard box tray, such as the ones that come underneath a flat of water bottles. Paint large surfaces using a pattern of large 'Ws' across the wall, back and forth. Cover places like hinges and door knobs with Vasoline to prevent paint from sticking. If the painter's tape won't peel, put it in a microwave for 10 seconds. Alcohol wipes such as those found in first aid kits will wipe up paint drips, and Q-tips will touch up tiny spots. Store the paint roller in a Ziplok baggie in a Pringles can to keep it fresh over night.

PAUL BUNYAN Paul Bunyan, the lumberjack of legend, is celebrated annually in the month of August. Is this giant fact or fiction? We’ll probably never know! • Several places have laid claim as the birthplace of Paul Bunyan, including Michigan, Maine, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and St. Eustache, Canada. Some tales are entirely imaginary, such as the myth that it took five storks to bring Bunyan to the world, and that he was nearly 8 feet tall (2.4 m) with a stride of 7 feet (2.1 m). One of the more logical tales tells of the role of lumberjacks in Canada’s 1837 Papineau Rebellion. When French Canadians in the St. Lawrence River region rebelled against their new ruler, the Queen of England, many loggers armed with axes stepped up to battle English troops. A tall bearded bellowing man was among the loggers became famous for his part in the battle. • Tales of Bunyan’s heroics were told around loggers’ campfires for years to come, each one being embellished a bit more. By the 1880s, there wasn’t a logging camp that didn’t know the story of the giant. In 1910, writer James MacGillvray, who had worked in a Michigan camp, put the accounts on paper
in the Detroit News Tribune. In 1914, the Red River Lumber Company of Minneapolis used the image of a giant lumberjack and created a colossal blue ox as his companion in an advertising pamphlet. Over 100,000
of the brochures were distributed and Bunyan’s popularity grew. A 1924 collection of tales by Esther Shephard and another anthology the following year by James Stevens fueled the fire of the legend. Famed
poet Carl Sandburg wrote that Bunyan lived “around the hot stoves of winter, among socks and mittens drying, in the smell of tobacco smoke and the roar of laughter mocking the outside weather.”

Q: The last time I saw the gorgeous and talented Katherine LaNasa was in the NBC nighttime drama "Deception." I just loved her character of Adriana. Can you tell me when/where I can see her again? -- Jennifer G., via email
• A newspaper reporter once asked General Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Free French Forces during World War II and later president of the French Fifth Republic, if he was happy. De Gaulle replied, "What do you take me for, an idiot?"
A: The lovely lady LaNasa currently is co-starring in the new USA drama "Satisfaction," which also stars Matt Passmore and Stephanie Szostak, and airs Thursdays at 10/9c. Katherine plays Adriana, the hard-edged, high-end madam who lures unhappy husband and father Neil Truman (Matt Passmore) into becoming one of her male escorts. While some had their doubts as to her taking on this role, she knew it was one she could hone and make her own. She recently told me: "It was definitely really outside the box, so I liked that about it. I knew how the part read, but I had this feeling that I could really do something different with it. It's always nice when you take it in a different direction, and they say, 'Yes!' When (writer/executive producer) Sean (Jablonski) saw my take, he told me he just knew that I was the person. "The same thing happened with Sophia (Bowers, "Deception"). It's fun in these serial soaps to have a character like Adriana or Sophia, but I think that the writers want there to be something not pushy about them. I seem to be able to manipulate most of these characters in that way. I always feel like I take a nod from the Barbara Stanwycks of the world. I felt like those ladies really knew how to do it. They were complicated, strong and dark characters in the forefront, and it was a lot of fun. I've been lucky to get to play those types of characters in these past few series." *** Q: Can you tell me what Naomi Watts has coming up? She is always such a joy to watch. -- Nathan H., Fresno, Calif. A: The versatile and award-winning actress recently started work in a prominent role in "Insurgent" and "Allegiant," movies two and three of the "Divergent" trilogy. "LAST CHAIN ON BILLIE: HOW ONE EXTRAORDINARY ELEPHANT ESCAPED THE BIG TOP" by Carol Bradley (St. Martin's Press, $25.99) Reviewed by Larry Cox This book is so graphic and searing, it will forever change the way you view elephants in captivity. Carol Bradley, an award-winning journalist who has written extensively about animals and animal rights, tells the story of Billie, an elephant captured in Asia and brought to America to perform in circuses. How Billie survived and was saved from a life of abuse is an inspiring true story of resilience and hope. Instead of spending her life surrounded by family and free to wander the jungles of Asia, Billie was captured, fenced in, had all four legs shackled and likely was beaten into submission. Captured elephants also routinely are starved and sometimes kept awake for several days -- anything to break the animal's spirit. The isolation, the food deprivation, the cruelty are all used to make creatures such as Billie "trainable." She ar-

rived in the United States in 1966 at age 4, a purchase of the small Southwick's zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts. Experts now know that severing the mother-baby attachments of certain animals too soon -- especially sensitive creatures such as elephants --- can cause incalculable psychological damage. This is what happened to Billie, and why most of her life she was labeled as a problem elephant. Traveling in trucks, chained and barely able to move, and performing surrounded by harsh lights and blaring music was Billie's nightmarish life. The chains eventually were removed when she became part of the largest elephant rescue in American history. Billie now lives out her life in Tennessee, free to roam through open meadows at a sanctuary for performing elephants and with the comfort of being part of a herd. This remarkable book is difďŹ cult and, yes, painful to read, but necessary if we hope to improve the lot of performing animals in this country. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

diseases, and there is a long list of wonderful heath effects associated with eating fresh blackberries regularly. In summer, depending on your part of the country, there are many pick-your-own farms. This is a fun way to get the tastiest fruit. When selecting blackberries, look for ones that have a plump, dark color. Remember the brand or farm that gives you your first delicious berries, because you likely can depend on it throughout the season. Blackberries are highly perishable. When you get them home, unpack them and look for any that might have mold, and discard them. Then store the berries, unwashed, in a single layer on a plate or in another container, and place it in the refrigerator. The blackberries should keep for up to a week.

Of all the berries of summer, blackberries are the ones that arrive early and stay late into the season. In warm climates, this strikingly beautiful fruit begins producing in late spring, and if the weather is not too hot, will continue throughout the summer. Autumn will find him shooting "Hail Caesar" for the Coen brothers, about a 1950s movie studio string-puller. Already onboard are Josh Brolin and Scarlett Johansson. Ironically, Johansson, who's expecting her first child (with French journalist husband Romain Dauriac), will play an actress suddenly discovering she's pregnant. Also ready to sign for the film is Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes. Then spring will find George shooting "Money Monster," being directed by Oscar-winner Jody Foster. Clooney's next film in theaters is "Tomorrowland," which Disney will release in May. *** Richard Gere is still going strong at 64. February will bring him to theaters in "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2," with Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Maggie Smith, and later next year in "Franny," with Theo James and Dakota Fanning. Gere currently is shooting "Time Out of Mind" on the streets of New York with Kyra Sedgwick ("The Closer"), in which they both play homeless people. *** Ben Affleck's new film, "Gone Girl," with Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry comes out in October. He's currently before the cameras filming the May 2016 release of "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice." Affleck is reprising his 2003 "Batman" role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Henry Cavill again is Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams is Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne is Perry White,

5-Minute Daily Run?! I wonder about some of these studies. A new one out claims that if we run five minutes a day, we'll live a longer life. The 55,000 participants in the study (which went on for many years) ranged in age from 18 to 100.
How Old Is Old? When do we seniors finally reach old age? The answer depends on who we ask, and when. Back in 2009, Pew Research did a survey, and the average answer was at 68 years old ... unless the person being asked was under 30. Then "old age" struck before age 60, said the youngsters. Those who were already age 65 said old age didn't arrive until age 74. The result was even disputed by sex; when all ages were averaged, women said age 70, and men said age 66.
Runners had much lower risk of cardiovascular mortality, with a bonus three years tacked on to their life span. Even runners who ran approximately 51 minutes a week had this same reduced mortality. Their conclusion: Running five to 10 minutes a day results in this reduced mortality. Despite its conclusion, the research doesn't actually say "five minutes per day." The study also didn't say why it has to be running. I wonder, too, about the people who participated. If they were healthy enough to run for a half hour, maybe they were already in a health category that would give them a longer life.
The top four answers to the question about becoming old netted conflicting mile markers: 1) Turns 85; 2) can't live independently; 3) can't drive; 4) turns 75.
In terms of impact on the body, I don't understand why a five-minute run multiple times a week is as good as a half-hour run when it comes to cardiovascular strength.
Here's a smile: A U.K. study done four years ago pegs the end of youth at 35 and the beginning of old age at 58. In Portugal, it was age 29 when youth ended. (Did you feel middle aged at 30?)
This is one time I'm going to give a thumbs-down on research study suggestions, at least for us, and point to another study (2011) that calls for 15 minutes a day or 90 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity ... like walking.
Fast-forward to now: Similar research shows that those over 40 think "old age" starts at age 80. My, how things have changed. Seems that retirement doesn't automatically put us in the old age category, at least for those who are decades younger than we are. Perhaps it's how we're living now that makes a difference in perceptions of age. Our parents might have sat back after retirement at age 65, taken on at-home hobbies, napped in the afternoon and called it good. We're out there in the world traveling, being active, working out, texting the grandkids, learning musical instruments, acting in local theater, volunteering, joining clubs -- and often still working. At this point, 36 percent of us don't think we'll retire at age 65 -- maybe because we can't?
A brisk 30-minute walk a few times a week has benefits. Or spending time on a treadmill or stationary bicycle, or swimming in a pool. Best bet: malls that open their doors early for morning walkers. That environment is warm/cool (depending on the season), has a level surface and is safer than being out on the streets. *NIACIN IS UNSAFE AND DOES NOT REDUCE TRIGLYCERIDES Niacin—the B-vitamin often taken as a supplement to reduce triglycerides—appears to increase mortality risk, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. A low-fat vegan diet may reduce pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, according to a presentation this week at the American Association of Diabetes Educators Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla. In a randomized controlled trial of 35 type 2 diabetes patients with painful neuropathy, half followed a vegan diet and took a vitamin B12 supplement for 20 weeks, while the other half only took the supplement. The diet group showed greater improvements in some pain measures and body weight, as compared with the control group. This study demonstrates the promise of a dietary approach to diabetic nerve pain and other microvascular complications.

A Southern-American diet of fatty foods and sugary drinks can greatly increase kidney patients’ mortality risk, according to a study published in the American Journal of Kidney Diseases. Researchers followed 3,972 participants with chronic kidney disease from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) Study. Participants were grouped into five dietary eating patterns, including Southern, fast-food, and plant-based. Over a six-year follow-up, results showed those who followed the Southern dietary pattern rich in fried foods, processed meat, and sweetened beverages had the highest risk for death, while those who followed a plant-based eating pattern had the lowest risk for death.

ANSWER: This sounds like a spasm of one of the muscles that control the tension of the eardrum, the tensor tympani and stapedius muscles. These muscles protect our ears, to some extent, from loud noises. Just like you can have a spasm or twitch in your eye muscles -- or indeed any muscle -- these muscles cause a unique sound sensation in the ear when they repeatedly twitch with high frequency. The plugging/unplugging sensation is likely the Eustachian tube, which controls the pressure in the ear, opening and closing. The bad news is that I don't know of anything to make it stop. The good news is

that it won't affect your hearing. Very rarely, it can be a sign of a nerve or muscle disease, but it is likely a normal phenomenon that many people have but few notice and articulate it as well as you have. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother, 88 years old, recently switched her medicine for hypertension from timed release, which she has been taking for 10 years, to one that is not timed release, because the timed release was too expensive. I'm worried. Has she compromised her health by doing this? Her cardiologist gave her the go-ahead. -- J.R. ANSWER: In my opinion, timed-release versions for high blood pressure are preferable to non-timed-release because the level of the medication in the blood can go up and down to a greater degree with the regular-release formulation. However, it does depend on the medication, and her cardiologist knows more than I do about her particular situation.

SPORTS HISTORY'S GREATEST HITS What were the top moments in sports history (USA)? That question presented itself amid a round of coffee and doughnuts one morning. It had to be an iconic moment, something that was replayed in the highlight reel of your mind. In no particular order, the argument was made for the following:
1. Babe Ruth's called shot

Footage of the moment, an at-bat against the Chicago Cubs during a World Series, actually exists. Regardless of whether you believe he called the shot or not, the moment has become the de facto standard for mimicry in sports. Everyone who has ever swung a baseball bat has at one time or another, pointed to the stands.
2. The Miracle on Ice This is self-explanatory. The story of the 1980 U.S. Men's Hockey team and their gold medal-winning ways has everything you want in a story, even the foil, the Russians. It's an underdog story, and it comes packaged with Al Michael's timeless call: "Do you believe in miracles? YES!" Also, it's a cautionary tale: Herb Brooks, the men's head coach, will forever be remembered as wearing that ridiculous bell-bottom, scotch-plaid suit during the game. Incidentally, the win over the Russians was not the gold-medal game; it was a semifinal, and Team USA won gold over Finland in the finals. (Brooks wore a classic blue suit in that game ... figures.)
3. The Hail Mary and The Immaculate Reception Today, football is considered the national pastime, supplanting baseball. This is directly attributable to the on-field battles between the Chuck Knoll's Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tom Landry's Dallas Cowboys.
Babe Ruth
The exploits of Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris and Tony Dorsett were not only riveting to watch, they inspired sports writers to coin phrases. Staubach's profession of faith to a reporter after launching a last-minute, desperation pass to win was the precursor to Tim Tebow's touchdown genuflect and is now a part of football cannon. While "The Hail Mary" pass entered the lexicon and the playbooks in ways the unplanned Bradshaw to Harris via Fuqua "Immaculate Reception" never can, those who remember how every primetime television show featured "The Dallas Cowgirls" and their relevance, understand just how integral these two teams are to American culture as a whole. If the door sticks when it rolls, check the bottom rollers. (Gently wiggle each side of the door; the side with more resistance may have a roller off the track.) Carefully lift up that side of the door as far as it will go (usually a fraction of an inch). Use a small putty knife to gently push the roller wheel back down into its track, and test.
Repair or Replace Broken Screen Door? Q: On a visit to our friend's house, my youngest son ran toward the sliding-glass doors leading to the back yard and went right through the screen door. He's fine, but I want to fix the damage. Can I do so without having to buy a whole new door? -- Joe T., Hartford, Conn. A: If the door frame is undamaged, you should be able to replace the screen itself without paying too much. With your friend, inspect the door frame for warped or broken rollers. Make sure it's seated properly in the track and rolls easily back and forth.

Now, you can elect either to replace the screen and any damaged components (if the rollers broke or were loosened, for example), or to replace the entire door ($50 to upward of $100). Also consider how much time and effort you want to put into the repair versus a replacement. For time's sake, let's go with the screen replacement. If replacement parts are available for that specific model, get those; otherwise, a generic replacement kit with nylon screen and spline should work fine. Purchase a spline roller as well.

Remove the screen door from its tracks by lifting upward and tugging out. Lay the door flat on a clean surface with the screen side nearest you. Locate the rubber spline around the perimeter of the screen. Using a flat screwdriver, ease a section of spline out of its track and then pull the entire run out. The broken screen will come out with it.
Repeat the process on all four sides, working carefully around each corner so that the edges don't tear the screen. Hold the screen taut as you work.
Next, roll the replacement screen out and pre-measure. Leave at least 1 inch extra around all four sides. Use a utility knife to cut the screen to size.
Put the door back into place, setting it into the top of the frame first and then easing into its bottom track, being careful not to damage the rollers.
With a helper holding the screen in place, use the spline roller's convex (ungrooved) end to push the new screen down into its groove on one side of the door. Follow up by pushing the new spline into place in the groove, pinning the screen in. Use the grooved side of the roller to push the spline in tightly.
HOME TIP: Screens with one or two minor flaws can be repaired using needle and thread; screens with tears or large holes should be replaced.
Once the spline is in place, carefully cut away the extra length at the end and push the nub down into the groove. Use a utility knife to trim away the excess screen from the outer edge of the spline groove.

for example, zero interest for 18 months if you do a balance transfer, that's worth paying attention to. Even if you only transfer one high-interest card, you'll save money. Beware the interest rate that takes effect on your new card after that period expires.
FINDING EXTRA MONEY When you need a little extra money, chances are you can find some if you know where to look. Even a small change in habits can leave more money in your wallet. • If you have a collection or a hobby, sell off your duplicates, such as stamps, postcards or coins. (Don't be tempted to buy new pieces.) • Check banks and credit unions to see
if you can find a better interest rate than you have now. • Go generic at the grocery store for one month. • If you're gone all day, consider whether the expense of a programmable thermostat will save on your fuel bills this winter. (Start looking now for the clear plastic window coverings, before they're gone.) • Pay attention to the credit-card ads that come in the mail. If you find one that says,
Every Friday • 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
• Make a list of your bartering talents. You might know more than you think you do (sewing, bicycle repair, oil change) and those skills have value to someone else. Check the barter section of Craigslist.org for ideas. Also scroll through the Wanted list to see what you might have that someone else will buy. Your old albums and 45s, musical instruments, books and vintage computer games might fetch a few dollars and free up space. • Cancel your gym membership. Seriously, if you haven't used it more than twice since January, are you likely to start back? • Are you reading all those magazines that arrive each month? If not, cancel them and get your money back on the balance

company comes over, he whines constantly or runs behind me to bark if a man approaches. How can I ease his anxiety? -- Linda in San Jose, Calif. DEAR LINDA: It's clear that Archie has some trauma in his past, and he may never be completely free of his anxiety. What you'll need to do is be patient and encouraging. There isn't a tried and true method to "cure" him of this, but you can ease his fears.

rings. Once everyone has settled, bring Archie in to meet each guest. If he becomes stressed or won't approach certain people, don't worry and don't be embarrassed. Just take him back to his safe room or kennel cage, give him lots of praise and maybe a treat, and leave it at that. Make sure kids (and some adults!) don't chase after Archie or insist that they get to pet him. Let Archie approach new people on his own.
MEN SPOOK RESCUE DOG
First, talk with his vet about ways to reduce Archie's overall anxiety. He may suggest medication, either for a specific period of time or permanently, to help. You also can try alternative medicine like Bach's Rescue Remedy, which many owners swear by and which can be added to Archie's water bowl once a day.
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My beautiful big mutt, "Archie," is a rescue dog who is very anxious around men. I'm not sure why, or what's in his past to cause this. But when
Next, don't overwhelm him when company comes over. Place Archie in a back room or the kitchen, or train him to stay in place when the doorbell

And in fact, millions of people have sought refuge and thrived here, including my parents. But the tradition gets obliterated in all the angry debate about those who try to breach our borders ... even the children we see today, trying to escape the "tempest" in their own countries. Arguably, the welcome for "huddled masses yearning to breathe free" has its limits -- practical ones and, frankly, bigoted ones.
those of lesser means. Even as the laws are created, the wealthy special interests hire expensive lobbyists to make sure they're not bound by the same rules as those who have no paid-for voice. And it's getting worse.
SHAKY AMERICAN PRINCIPLES Yes, I know. How many times have we been told "We are a nation of immigrants"? The welcome, after all, is right there on the Statue of Liberty:
To some degree, the grand promise has been lip service for a long time. Once the colonists and succeeding generations had settled in and expanded, they started being downright hostile to those who decided to come along later. Italians, Irish, Germans and Asians all have had to run the gantlet of vicious prejudice once they arrived. Boatloads of Jews were simply turned away by anti-Semitism as they tried to flee the horrors of the Holocaust. Now it's many Muslims who experience religious hatred. Back in the day, Quakers were ostracized. Of course, Africans were welcomed ... as they were unloaded from their slave ships. All in all, it's easy to understand the vicious reaction to those who pursue a life today in the United States. It's nothing new. And it's not unique. We are finding it harder and harder to live up to our stated ideals. "Equal Justice Under Law," the words chiseled over the entrance of the Supreme Court, are mocked in courthouses throughout the country. We take it as a given that those who can afford it get a much easier ride through our justice system than
MAKE POUNDED PANSY POUCHES I don't know a young child who doesn't love a hammer. Watch when kids grab one tightly in both small hands, lift it high and pound. Thud! They see it do something. It might be only a nick on a board, or, if lucky, they'll hit a nail square on. Throughout the action, it's a thrilling feeling of control and an introduction to the adult world. Hammers can be the perfect tool for kids to make imprints of fragile flowers, too. When they tap, tap, tap a wax-paper-covered flower on fabric, they magically see the bloom's natural colors and shapes appear before their eyes. No wonder families recently filled the benches at a craft booth created by craft studio Heartfelt, at our local weekend farmer's market. Pounding natural designs of violet pansies onto fabric was the first step. Then the children
As he becomes more confident and secure, he may be much friendlier to visitors that he's familiar with, such as close friends ... maybe. There are no certainties when it comes to dogs that suffered past abuse. Give him consideration and time.

The middle class, which all politicians blithely describe as the backbone of our society, is withering away. The unions that protected worker rights have been steamrolled by executives who benefit financially if their employees just scrape by. Every day, economic inequality widens. Even everyone's precious right to vote is undermined, not just by the obstacles put up by dilatory rules, but by the shameless distortions in the barrage of campaign ads, sponsored by those who want to buy the elections. Equal opportunity? Another platitude. So many of the nation's public-education systems are in shambles. Those who could exercise their clout to force improvements instead pull their children out and place them in expensive private schools, where they are walled off from the riffraff. This country was designed to be a haven for those seeking freedom and, if not prosperity, at least a safe existence. Perhaps that was a false promise -- too much to deliver. Maybe at some point we'll just admit that we can't pull it off and symbolically say to the Founding Fathers, "Nice try." (c) 2014 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Synd.

1. Cut two pieces of plain white cotton or muslin fabric 2 3/4 inch wide by 3 inches long with pinking shears. 2. Put one of the fabric pieces on a cutting board or a flat piece of wood. Carefully set a fresh pansy bloom in the middle of the fabric -- front side down and stem side up. Cover it with a sheet of wax paper, and hammer over the wax-paper-covered flower until its color has been absorbed into the fabric. Remove the wax paper and pansy to reveal the natural, colorful floral design. 3. It's time to sew the two fabric pieces together to form the neck pouch. Thread a large needle with a 30-inch length of embroidery floss. Stack the fabric pieces with the floral print on top and, beginning at the top right corner, sew the sides and bottom together with a running stitch. Guide your child's hands when needed. When complete, remove the needle and knot the end of the floss to the starting corner of the pouch. Place the pouch around your child's neck and put a coin or
