HEART ATTACK FACTS: • 37% of all deaths in the United States are related to heart disease, making it the largest single cause of natural death. Heart disease kills twice as many people as all forms of cancer combined. The major causes are smoking, fatty diet, high blood pressure, obesity, stress, heredity, lack of exercise, and diabetes. It is an illness produced of man's environment. Before 1900, heart attacks were very rare. The rate of heart disease increased so sharply between 1940 and 1967 that the World Health Organization called it the world’s most serious epidemic.

IT'S A FACT • Every single cell in the heart is guided by an electrical impulse which synchronizes the heartbeat so all muscle cells contract in unison to pump the blood. During a heart attack, the cells begin firing out of turn so the efficiency of the heart is lost and the blood does not get pumped. When doctors shock the heart, the shock overrides each cell’s individual firing mechanism and once again synchronizes every cell, hopefully getting them all to work together again. …turn the page for more

HEART (continued):
TELL TALE HEART • Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. About a quarter of a million women will have a serious heart attack this year. It's true that estrogen gives women a healthy edge in fighting heart disease, but after menopause, the risk increases yearly till women are equal with men. Between the ages of 45 and 65, one out of nine women will show symptoms of heart disease, compared to one in seven men. But after age 65, the ratio jumps to one in three, which is equal to that of men. However, studies have shown that in the first weeks following a heart attack, women are twice as likely to die as men. Furthermore, more women die during bypass surgery than do men. Why?
than men before going to the hospital for help, increasing their chance of complications. • One cardiovascular surgeon theorizes that another reason more women die during bypass surgery is because they have proportionately smaller arteries, making the surgery more difficult. • Men suffer heart attacks an average of ten years earlier in life than women, but women are twice as likely to die from their first heart attack as men. • It's estimated that 90% of heart disease could have been prevented. • On average, one person dies of a heart attack every minute in the U.S.
HEART OF THE PROBLEM • Some doctors say it's due to a combination of factors. One is that when men go to a doctor and complain of chest pains, doctors automatically think of heart disease. But when women complain of chest pains, doctors may still think of heart trouble as a "man's disease" and will look for other causes first. Furthermore, some doctors tend to think of women as having more psychosomatic illnesses than men. Women too are at fault, for a study has shown that they tend to wait longer
• About 600,000 Americans die of heart attacks each year. 350,000 of them die before they can even reach a hospital. • Cardiovascular problems are responsible for over half the deaths of people over age 65. • A quarter of the people who die of heart attacks show no previous sign of disease. • Stress plays a role in 70% of all illnesses. People under stress are six times as likely

to have a heart attack as those under little stress. • The heart of a typical alcoholic may be twice the size it should be. • Smoking is responsible for 100,000 deaths from lung cancer and 170,000 deaths from heart attacks each year.
CUTTING THE RISKS • People with coronary heart disease are 30% less likely to suffer from blocked arteries if they regularly take naps during the day. • Females who jog an average of 27 miles per week are sick an average of two days per year, compared to eleven sick days for female non-runners. Male runners missed an average of 1.5 days per year compared to 4.4 sick days for male non-runners. • People who work in factories with high noise levels have higher rates of cardiovascular disease, digestive disorders, and circulatory problems than those with quieter workplaces. • A study of 45,000 men done by the Harvard University School of Public Health showed coffee does not increase the risk of heart attack or stroke as long as fewer than six cups per day are consumed. • Smoking cigarettes and drinking coffee at the same time raises the blood pressure.
The combination of caffeine and nicotine also stops the effects of many high blood pressure medications. This spells danger for those whose blood pressure is already too high.

FAST FACTS • In 1933 at the age of 58, Wilson Mizner had a heart attack in Hollywood, where he was a screen writer. When he regained consciousness, he was asked if he wanted to see a priest. "I want to see a priest, a rabbi, and a Protestant clergyman," he said. "I want to hedge my bets!" When a priest came to his deathbed, Mizner waved him away, saying, "Why should I talk to you? I've just been talking to your boss!" He died shortly afterwards, reportedly with a smile. • Walter Matthau had a heart attack in the middle of filming The Fortune Cookie in 1966. He resumed filming five months later. In the movie, he goes out the door and comes back in again forty pounds lighter. • In 1975 Philadelphians reelected Francis O'Donnell to the city council even though

he had died of a heart attack a week earlier. There wasn't time to change the ballots. • In 1973 two white cops in New York were giving mouthto-mouth to a Puerto Rican woman who had suffered a heart attack and collapsed. A crowd of Puerto Ricans gathered and thought the cops were assaulting the woman. The policemen didn't speak Spanish and the Puerto Ricans didn't speak English. The mob beat the two cops. • Les Boatwright died of a heart attack a week before the Super Bowl XXIII game, to which he had two tickets.
Knowing he wouldn't want to miss the game, his two sons took the tickets, and his ashes, to the game. • Giuseppe De Mai was born with two hearts beating in his chest. In 1894 he signed a contract with the London Academy of Medicine, and was paid $15,000 for permission to study his hearts after his death.
THE FINAL FACT • Rabbits who were cuddled for one hour a day suffered one-third the amount of heart disease as rabbits who received no cuddles.

Famous Canadians
JOHN HOPPS • John Hopps was born in Winnipeg in 1919. After receiving a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Manitoba in 1941, he joined the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in 1942. He was researching hypothermia and experimenting with radio frequency heating to restore body temperature when he came to the attention of Dr. Wilfred Bigelow and Dr. John Callaghan at the Banting Institute in the University of Toronto.
• John Hopps went to work designing the world's first pacemaker. The first model, an external pacemaker developed in 1951, was about the size of a shoebox and needed to be plugged into an electrical outlet to work. It used vacuum tubes to generate electrical pulses. An insulated wire inserted through the jugular vein delivered the electric shocks to the right atrium of the heart. These shocks provided the artificial pacing. (cont'd)
• This team of surgeons was researching methods of heart surgery. Dr. Bigelow believed that the only way cardiovascular medicine could advance was by enabling open-heart surgery. Based on his experience as a field medic during World War II, he was convinced that cooling the body and slowing the heart rate was the way to go. One of the challenges the surgeons faced was keeping the heart beating while the body was hypothermic. During an experimental surgery on a dog, they noticed that stimulating a stopped heart with an electrical probe could restart it, and that sending pulses of electrical current could actually change the heart’s rate. It was “a tremendous bit of good fortune,” said Dr. Bigelow in an interview about the discovery with the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. To turn this discovery into a clinical device, they recruited John Hopps.
• It would be another ten years before internal pacemakers became a reality. The turning point was the invention of small silicon transistors to replace vacuum tubes. This technology allowed pacemakers to become small enough to be implanted in the body. • The first recipient of an internal pacemaker was Arne Larsson of Sweden in 1958. The prototype was about the size of a tin of shoe polish. Over his lifetime, Mr. Larsson received 28 devices and lived
to the age of 86. • Today’s pacemakers are about the size of a USB stick. They may be as small as one inch (2.5 cm) in diameter and weigh as little as 0.5 oz. (14 gm). Pacemaker surgery is usually performed in less than an hour under a local anesthetic. In addition to being smaller, modern pacemakers are far more complex. Programmable pacemakers were introduced in the 1970s that allowed doctors to choose different pulse speeds and durations. Modern pacemakers include microprocessors that collect data about how well the heart and pacemaker are working. These microprocessors can also monitor the patient’s physical activity and adjust the heartbeat as needed. Some pacemakers can even restart the heart if it stops. Dr. Hopps retired in 1979. Ironically enough, in 1984 he himself became a recipient of a pacemaker. Hopps died in 1998 after seeing his invention save thousands of lives.

GREAT IS GARLIC • Garlic contains 33 sulfur compounds, 17 amino acids, germanium, selenium, various minerals, and vitamins A, B1, and C. It has only two calories per clove, is fat free, and very low in sodium.
turned out to be just as effective as the medicine. A study reported in the British medical journal Lancet proved that after taking nine cloves of garlic, cholesterol dropped by seven percent.
• Garlic is not just a spice; it is also a medicine. Louis Pasteur proved in 1858 that garlic acted as an antibiotic, killing bacteria in lab culture dishes. During World War II when penicillin was still new and rare and sulfa drugs were often not available, garlic-soaked moss was used as an antiseptic to disinfect wounds and prevent gangrene. There are over 1,200 medical reports and an additional 700 studies of the chemistry of garlic, many of which have shown that garlic lowers cholesterol, decreases blood pressure, and inhibits cancer. It increases the capacity of the body to absorb vitamin B1 which is typically difficult to digest and slow to be assimilated. Garlic kills pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract, and also stimulates digestive juices. Consider these studies:
• Volunteer diners had their cholesterol checked before a meal. The average cholesterol level was 221.4 before dining. Then they were fed a meal containing a total of 1/4 pound of butter. Three hours later, the average cholesterol level was up to 237.4. But when the same meal was given again, this time along with the oil from 50 grams of garlic added to the recipe, the average cholesterol level dropped to 212.7, which was lower than before the test subjects had even begun eating. (cont'd next page)
•In a trial that pitted garlic against the cholesterol-lowering drug called Bezafibrate, garlic
• The Journal of Hypertension reported that garlic can lower blood pressure by as much as nine percent. • One study in India took 432 people who had recently had heart attacks. Half were given garlic oil daily and half were given placebos. After three years, those taking the daily garlic oil suffered 35 percent fewer
secondary heart attacks and 45 percent fewer deaths than those taking the placebos. A study of over 40,000 women in Iowa found that those who ate garlic at least once a week had a 35% lower chance of getting colon cancer than those who ate no garlic at all. • A group of people were given garlic every day for three weeks. Then white blood cells were taken from the test subjects and placed in a lab dish containing cancerous cells. The garlic-eater's white blood cells killed off more than twice as many tumor cells as did white blood cells from people who ate no garlic. • Three different groups of toads were fed either freshly minced garlic, garlic oil, or corn oil (as a placebo) for four months before being exposed to aflatoxin B1, which is a food contaminant known to cause liver cancer. Only three percent of the toads fed minced garlic and nine percent fed garlic oil developed tumors. However, 19 percent of those fed corn oil developed cancer. • Even though many studies have shown positive results from garlic, it is still illegal in the U.S. to make any medical claims concerning its health benefits. It is also difficult to get federal funding for additional studies, and pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to explore research into widely available natural substances that cannot be patented. • Garlic may interact with a variety of medications including anti-hypertensives, hypoglycemic drugs, Warfarin, and antibiotics such as Cipro.

This piece was performed only once a year, and the pope had forbidden its performance anywhere else in the world. There was only one copy of the score, and it was kept in a vault in the Vatican. According to a papal decree, anyone who reproduced the work in any way would be excommunicated from the Catholic Church. After Mozart heard the performance -- only once -- he transcribed the entire piece. When the pope heard of this feat of memory and musical genius, rather than excommunicating the

Q: Can you tell me about the actress who plays Lucia on "Graceland"? She looks familiar to me. What else has she been on? -- Patrick J., via email A: Jamie Gray Hyder is perhaps best known for playing Danielle, a werewolf in Alcide's pack, last season on "True Blood." After her "TB" stint ended, she went on to co-star on "Graceland" as Lucia Solano, who is just trying to live life on the straight and narrow -- unlike her brother, Carlito, and the rest of her family. I spoke with Jamie recently about her new role, as well as what we can expect as "Graceland" wraps up its second season on the USA network. "Lucia wants to get a real job and be independent and prosperous, in a legal way. She wants to be able to live a normal life and have normal relation-

She did give me a little tease as to what to expect in the finale: "It's a two-part finale, and it's definitely designed to leave everyone wanting more. I just got done shooting it, and it's all very fresh in my mind. I'll tell you this, when I read the finale, I was shocked." *** Q: Like the rest of the world, I was shocked and heartbroken to hear about Robin Williams’ suicide. I know he was working on some movies before his death. Will any be released posthumously? -- Kelli F., via email A: The consummate funnyman with a heart as big as his funny bone left this world way too soon, as I’m sure we all can agree. He did leave behind four movies that have yet to be released: “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” “Merry Friggin’ Christmas,” “Boulevard” and “Absolutely Anything.”
*** Q: What has Adrien Brody been doing lately? -- Gina T., via email A: Next up for Adrien is starring as the great magician-showman Henry Houdini in "Houdini," the History Channel original miniseries, which airs Sept. 1 and 2 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The miniseries follows the epic tales of Harry Houdini as he emerges as America's first bona-fide world-renowned superstar. "Houdini" delves deep behind the curtain into his life through his stunts, visions and mastery of illusion. *** Q: Will my favorite summer series, "Suits," be back for another season? -Fallon F., via email A: USA's hit legal dramedy, which had its midseason finale Aug. 20, has indeed been renewed for a 16-episode fifth season. Former White House chef Bill Yosse has created the perfect recipe to showcase the unique flavors of nectarines. His Flaky Nectarine Pie is an addictive dessert featuring summer stone fruit encased in a delicate crust.
FLAKY NECTARINE PIE 2 packages pre-made pie dough (for 2 pie crusts) or homemade pie dough for 2 pie crusts Filling 8 cups (about 7) ripe nectarines, unpeeled, pitted and cut into 1-inch chunks • • • • • • • • •
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1/8 teaspoon salt 4 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon brandy 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup melted veg. margarine 1 1/2 teaspoon granulated sugar
For the Filling
STONE FRUIT FEAST When it comes to food and cooking, a good rule of thumb is to mix it up a bit. When cooking seasonally, it's best to try new foods when they show up at the farmers market or grocery. There's so much fresh summer produce to choose from -- from the popular picks like corn and watermelon, to the lesser known, not so sought after group like mulberries and crenshaw squash. Now is the time to take advantage of this overflowing in-the-raw produce buffet. Try something new and experience the nuances of different flavors in your meals! In a world longing for peaches, nectarines somehow take a back seat. Nectarines and peaches are both members of the stone-fruit family, which includes plums and apricots. But in this family, the peach and nectarine are so close, there is only one gene responsible for their difference. This unique gene makes the peach fuzzy and the nectarine smooth. If you take a blind taste test, I think you'll agree that the nectarine has its own distinct attraction. It's usually sweeter and juicier than most peaches -- in essence, more nectar! Nectarines, like peaches, originated in China over 2,000 years ago and spread across the continents until they landed in America. They grow best in warmer climates, like California, where almost all the nectarines we find in the market are grown. Nectarines are an excellent source of vitamin C and are low in calories. While a delicious sweet nectarine is relatively high in sugar, its fiber content helps the body slow the breakdown of its sugar in your digestive track, therefore making them a good choice for satisfying your sweet tooth. Recently, studies have even suggested that nectarines, as well as other stone fruits, have a bioactive compound that could prove effective in preventing obesity. Nectarines, like other stone fruits, are ripe when they give just slightly to the touch. You also should be able to smell the sweetness of a nectarine. They can sit out until fully ripe, then they should be eaten or refrigerated quickly. The ultimate is to buy ripe nectarines and enjoy them right away.
1. In a large bowl, toss together the nectarines and lemon juice. Add sugars and the salt; gently mix to combine without mashing the nectarine chunks. Set aside to macerate for about 30 minutes. 2. Return nectarines to the bowl and add cornstarch, mixing until it has completely dissolved. Stir in the brandy and vanilla. Reserve. To Assemble and Bake 1. Transfer one round of the pie crust dough to a black steel or Pyrex 9-inch pie pan, and trim the edges so they are even with the rim. Place the second round on a flat baking sheet and place in freezer. This will become the top of the pie. 2. Freeze dough in pie pan for 1 hour. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 425 F. Remove pie pan from freezer and line the dough with aluminum foil. Fill with baking beads, dried beans or uncooked rice. Bake for 30 minutes; allow to cool. When cool, preheat oven again to 350 F.
3. Pour nectarine filling into the pre-baked pie shell. Use a pastry brush to moisten the edges of the bottom pie crust with some of the margarine. Remove the top dough from freezer and place over the fruit. Press down around edges with fingers to seal, and tuck any excess dough under the edges. With paring knife, cut 12 slits in the center of raw dough, barely piercing it, to create air vents. Then, brush top dough with remaining melted margarine and sprinkle with Demerara or granulated sugar. 4. Bake on an aluminum foil-covered rimmed 11-by-17-inch baking sheet on the center rack for 1 hour until pie is deeply golden, and you can see the thick juices bubbling through the vents. Calling Dr. Kildare! Richard Chamberlain, absent from Broadway since 1999 when he played Baron Von Trapp in "The Sound of Music," will star with Holly Hunter and Bill Pullman in the New Group's production of "Sticks and Stones" later this year. It's a Vietnam-era story in which he plays a priest. The last time he played a priest was opposite Barbara Stanwyck in 1983's "The Thorn Birds." His first Broadway attempt was in the 1966 musical version of "Breakfast at Tiffany's." The book was written by Edward Albee from a Truman Capote novella, and was the basis of the famous Audrey Hepburn film made in 1961. The cast boasted Chamberlain, Mary Tyler Moore, Sally Kellerman and Larry Kert, the original Tony in Broadway's "West Side Story." Guess the public didn't want to see anyone but Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly. *** Everyone keeps talking about the sudden passing of Robin Williams at the age of 63. In 1977, I saw a young Robin Williams guesting in a taping of "The Richard Pryor Show." Everyone there knew this funny guy was going places. Robin was a comic genius who gave too much of himself away. Last year he appeared on the Emmy Awards to deliver a tribute about his idol, Jonathan Winters, who played his son on "Mork and Mindy." This year the Emmy Awards are planning a tribute to him. *** Channing Tatum currently is co-writing the sequel to "Magic Mike," titled "Magic Mike XXL," with his partner Reid Carolin. He promises, "It'll be crazier than the first one." Steven Soderbergh, who directed the original, will participate if needed, as his assistant Gregory Jacobs directs this one. Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello more than likely will return, while Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer will not. It will be out in July 2015. Channing still has the $175 million epic space-opera "Jupiter Ascending" due out Feb. 6. He also has signed on for "XMen: Apocalypse," out May 2016, as well as "The Wolverine" sequel due March 2017. the top-rated variety show of the 1960s. "Laugh-In" gave us Lily Tomlin and Goldie Hawn, who later won an Oscar for "There's a Girl in My Soup" with Peter Sellers. Even President Richard Nixon wanted to be on the show. Robin also guested on the sitcom "Eight is Enough," and then the spin-off pilot of "Mork and Mindy." Computer Use Keeps Brain in High Gear We can improve our memory and store brain power for the future by surfing the Internet and checking email. So says a study with the unwieldy title of "English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA): Can Internet/Email Use Reduce Cognitive Decline?" Per the study, besides "storing" cognitive ability (brain-based skills) for the future, digital literacy also "leads to the employment of more efficient cognitive networks to delay cognitive decline" -- in other words, we find new ways of getting the results we want. It makes sense. Digital literacy involves more than just pressing buttons on the keyboard. Hunting for what we want on the Internet involves thinking, planning and carrying out what we want to do, evaluating what we find and maybe sharing it in email with others. And it's not just computers; smart phones,
tablets and laptops play a part in digital literacy -- as long as we understand how to use them. The study used a large group -- 6,400 adults in Britain -- ages 50 to 89, with annual retests for eight years. As tests of memory, they were given 10-word lists for later recall. The conclusion was that good health, financial status and education -- and digital literacy -- resulted in better memory. Those who didn't use the Internet showed declines. Current users increased their recall capability. The good news is that over half of seniors between 65 and 74 have Internet access, in both the U.K. and the U.S. Key is that little caveat about financial status. Not everyone can afford a computer and Internet access. However, there are ways to get around this. Senior centers often give classes on Internet browsing, use of

Morning Brain
Fast-forward the clock to morning, and seniors did much better at ignoring the distractions, on par with the younger participants, and focusing on cognitive tasks. The MRIs showed this to be so, with other areas of the brain activated.
We're morning people! Or at least we are when it comes to completing challenging tasks. So says a Canadian study done by Baycrest Center for Geriatric Care and a research group affiliated with the University of Toronto. This must have been a fun bit of research, pairing participants at opposite ends of the age spectrum: Young adults aged 19-30 were tested along with older adults aged 60-82 to see how memory works ... and when. Memory tests done two times during the day involved seeing and remembering pictures and word combinations, along with distractions on the computer screen. MRI tests were used at the same time to see what parts of the brain were active and to see if they correlate with the other results. Here's what found out:

Here are just a few things that might be easier to accomplish in the morning: • Balance checkbook • Brain puzzles • Driving test • Creating a shopping list for a new recipe • Learning a musical instrument • Reading • Planning an event or trip One of the researchers noted that this morning brain challenge needs to be considered when seniors are being tested. Weight Associated with Cancer Risk Increased body weight boosts one’s risk for developing several types of cancer, according to a new study published in the Lancet. Researchers analyzed the medical records of 5.24 million patients in the U.K. Of the 22 cancers assessed, 17 were positively associated with a higher body mass index (BMI, a measure of weight adjusted for height). For example, as BMI increased, so did one’s risk for cancers of the uterus, gallbladder, kidney, cervix, thyroid, liver, colon, and ovary, among others. Read more about the precautionary principle to cancer prevention here.
Researchers analyzed the hair, teeth, and bones of various mummies who lived in Egypt and found their diet was mostly grain-based, with high consumptions of barley and wheat. Based on other research, the authors suspect legumes and vegetables were also staples in the diets.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 75-plus-yearold female in excellent health. My doctor's comment on my most recent annual physical test results was: "Great results on all tests. Excellent report." My question: Is it necessary to have another colonoscopy at my age and with my good health. My mother died of colon/rectal cancer at age 85 in 2002, and all family members were advised to have this procedure. My initial results were two or three polyps removed that were not the

Fruits and Veggies Reduce Death Risk
My previous doctor has retired, and I just received a letter from his replacement that I am due for another procedure. I am not inclined to do this at my age, and considering the "all clear" reports of the previous exams and my general good health. I would appreciate your thoughts and recommendation. -- B.J.M. ANSWER: The odds are low that the colonoscopy would find something there, but there is still a small chance, especially with your mother having had colon cancer. Not having it is reasonable. But since you seem to be otherwise healthy and can expect a longer life than average, I would still say to get it. In fact, I would encourage you to have it. Some nights are good and some not. Do we need to address this to the doctor? -- C.G.J. ANSWER: Muscle jerks or twitches at nighttime are normal. There is a very, very small risk that this is a type of epilepsy, but if it is occurring only at night, and there is no family history of epilepsy, it is almost certainly normal. It may lessen as he gets older, but is probably nothing to worry about. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 68 and take seven to eight pills daily, including lisinopril, Caduet, a beta blocker, gout

ANSWER: The medications you list are commonly taken together with no problems. However, your pharmacist is the best source for questions about drug interactions and when to take what. Although there are excellent pharmacists at national chain stores, my patients generally report a better relationship with pharmacists at smaller mom-and-pop pharmacies. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. GREATEST MOMENTS IN SPORTS (Part 2) This week we continue with some of the top moments in American sports history.
Mr. October and Mr. November Whether you love or loathe them, there is an undeniable correlation between legendary moments on the field and the pinstriped-clad bombers from the Bronx. Reggie Jackson, a Hall of Famer, was certainly not the greatest hitter of all-time ... in fact, he was more notorious for striking out. Many ballplayers with names like Mays, Gehrig and Colavito have had multiple home run games of three or more. But Reggie Jackson hit three home runs with three swings of the bat one October night and said "Hi, mom" to the national television audience. That performance in the 1977 World Series made him synonymous with the clutch play, rivaled only by his replacement many years later, Derek Jeter, in terms of sheer star power and drink-stirring abilities,. "The flip," and the dive into the stands, the home run in November to extend the World Series after 9/11 ... epic.
Jets all the way For better or worse, Joe Namath's brag and "personal guarantee" of winning Super Bowl III changed the culture of sports in America. It's not that Namath was a great quarterback or turned in a great performance that day -- Matt Snell, the fullback, did more for the Jets on the field than Namath did -- it's that he became the living embodiment of walking the talk. He took what Ali had started and backed it up. Who can forget Broadway Joe's post-game, swinging No. 1 finger in the air as he ran off the field. It can't be topped. It's been done.
There is no more fitting martyr in American sports than Bill Buckner, a very good, steady first baseman for the Boston Red Sox. Buckner made thousands of plays at first base, but Mookie Wilson took him to the five-hole with the World Series on the line, Ray Knight on third and Vin Scully looking on. Jackie Robinson steals home Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier, inspired millions and opened doors, et cetera, et cetera. But most baseball historians seem to delight in making the argument that he was not the best ballplayer in the Negro Leagues. They talk more about his personality profile than his sheer skill. That's absurd, and here's just one illustration of that fact. One afternoon in 1955 at a field in Brooklyn, playing against the New York Yankees for the championship, Robinson stole home. Let's break that down: The pitcher had the ball, was about to throw a pitch to the plate that would, normally, result in either a foul or fair hit by the batter or, unless thrown past him or in the dirt, a loud thud in the mitt of the catcher. In the middle of all that, in front of tens of thousands of eyewitnesses and millions watching at home via the magic of television, Jackie Robinson ran from third base and scored a run for his team. The sheer stones of that guy. Incredible.

You'll need a few simple tools: a tape measure (one of the big locking ones is ideal) and a level (very inexpensive, but indispensible for getting the brackets set up in line). Buy a corded power drill, or borrow one from a friend, along with a set of drill bits. And keep one flat-head and one Phillips-head screwdriver on hand, too. You'll also need a small ladder or stepladder to work safely. Measure the height that the curtains must reach. If you want floor-length curtains, measure from the floor to the top of the window molding (the wooden “frame” around the window opening). Add about 4-6 inches to that measurement to get the correct height of curtains you need. (Most ready-made curtains come in standard sizes, with 84 inches the norm for floor-length.)
A: Sure. Tip one: don't be nervous about placing new brackets. Tip two: measure twice, cut (or drill) once.
Measure the width of the window from one side of the molding to the other.

rods should be long enough to extend 3-6 inches past the window on each side. The brackets need to be tough enough to hold up heavy curtains (that's part of the reason why your old brackets are partially torn out of the wall). You also may want to buy plastic wall anchors; bracket screws go through these to better hold the brackets in place. Really long curtain rods often come with an additional bracket placed at the center of the rod to keep it from warping downward. Take the hint and install this center bracket if it's included. To set up the new brackets, measure and mark a point 6 inches above the window molding and another one 3-6 inches past the molding, on both sides of the window. Use the level to ensure that the points are in line with each other. Make sure the new brackets aren't placed in the same spot as the old ones. Place the new bracket so the top part touches the outer mark you just made. Use a pencil and mark the drill holes for the bracket. Do the same on the other side. Re-measure and level the two points. Then, pre-drill guide

holes for the bracket, using a drill bit one size smaller than the bracket's screws. Hold the bracket in place over the pre-drilled holes, and place the screws, using the screwdriver to hand-tighten. If using a screw anchor, screw that into the wall first, then hold the bracket in place and thread the screw into the plastic anchor. (The anchor will pop open on the backside of the wallboard.) Double-check the placement of the second bracket one last time, then screw it into the wall. If a center bracket is needed, add that as well. Now, all that's left is to put the curtains onto the rod, and lift the rod into place on the brackets. An easy task! HOME TIP: Floor-length curtains should just touch the floor or crease slightly; shorter curtains should reach at least 6 inches below the window frame. For a good source of credit-card information, go online to CardHub (cardhub.com), click Credit Cards and fill in the selections on the left side of the screen. If you don't know your credit standing, click the Help Me Choose button under My Credit. Your answers to the questions will get you an idea of your rating, and the offers you get will be based on that. The "I Want" is another important category. You'll have to decide whether you prefer credit cards that offer a 0 percent interest rate on purchases, 0 percent on balance transfers (if you want to clear the balance on another card) or a low regular rate for general use.

Three cautions: 1) Look closely at the interest rates each card offers, especially for balance transfers with an initial 0 percent interest rate. When will that rate end? What will the rate go up to? Will you have your balance paid off by the time the interest kicks in? 2) It's bad for your credit score to apply for too many sources of credit at the same time. Read the starred reviews for each card you consider. See what others have to say about your choices before you apply. 3) Read the rewards information carefully. Do you get cash back or points? If you get points, how many? And for what categories of purchases? If you get points only for miles or hotels but you don't travel, this benefit won't do you any good. Before you make any decisions about applying for a card, look around the CardHub site and read, especially the questions and answers from other consumers. Their real-life experiences might tell you more than the financial details from the credit-card companies.

Ireland is an example of such a country. They then declare that their headquarters are located in the overseas company and, presto chango, they suddenly can be taxed as if they were a foreign corporation. While they live this accounting fiction, they continue to be based in the good old U.S. of A. It's just one of the scams we like to call "loopholes" that the rich have arranged through their lobbying and campaign-finance bribery to get written into the code. But the practice is metastasizing, as more and more conglomerates discover the virtue of having no virtue. It's a gimmick, but a very costly one to all of us, nearly $20 billion in tax revenue.
INVERSION AVERSION Maybe it's time to get really tough, my fellow Americans. Without a doubt, someone needs to be creative in coming up with ways to punish those corporations that are bailing on the United States of America -- a place where they made their fortunes -- and renouncing their citizen responsibility to pay the going tax rate at home. The tactic is known as "inversion." American corporations, such as Chiquita Bananas or the medical-device giant Medtronics,
The executives argue they have a responsibility to their stockholders to maximize profits by every means possible. It's such a handy rationalization. It can explain away all sorts of bad behavior. Cigarette manufacturers use it all the time. General Motors can utilize it to explain its deadly actions in concealing an ignition problem. In this case, companies are using it as justification for ditching their homeland, in effect declaring that the bottom line trumps everything, including patriotism. So what is to be done? In fact, our officeholders agree that the tax code needs major improvement. But try to reform anything these days. If it involves politicians, as New Yorkers say, "fugged-
curly kale work well. • 1 tablespoon olive or canola oil • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper or 1/2 teaspoon pepper flakes Here's the fun: 1. Heat oven to 400 degrees F.
MAKE KALE CHIPS WITH KIDS Hail to kale! I'm not sure what brought the green, leafy, good-for-you veggie into such renown, but try to open a foodie magazine or blog without some recipe bowing to its virtues. I've been following the trend and now dutifully toss it into stir fries and salads, and even let it stand alone all spiced up in our family's most recent obsession -- kale chips. While kale chip recipes abound, I found the best,
foolproof technique from Tricia Cornell, mom of two, freelance writer and author of the book "Eat More Vegetables: Making the Most of Your Seasonal Produce" (Minnesota Historical Society Press). The cookbook is chock full of easy-to-follow "family friendly, get kids involved" veggie recipes such as her tasty take on "Squash Chili" and "Soupe au Pistou." True to form, she has the kale-chip-making tech-
nique down to a science. "When my kids clamor for kale chips, who am I to refuse?" she said as her 7-year-old old son Arlo chopped up the kale. "I want the chips to be tasty and crispy every time we make them," she said. Pick up a bunch at your local market and enjoy making and tasting these light, crunchy treats with your kids.
KALE CHIPS
2. Trim off the long, tough center stems from kale and discard. Slice leaves into 1to 2-inch pieces and place in a large bowl. Pour oil, salt and pepper over kale, and massage kale well with your hands, making sure every piece is covered, but not dripping with oil. 3. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper and spread kale in a single layer. Place in oven and immediately reduce heat to 250 F.

aboutit." Besides, what they're talking about is incredibly complex. What we need right now is to come up with ways to make some of these guys pay a price, make them squeal a little. Here's one approach: Maybe those corporate entities that want to relocate, while continuing to prosper because of the infrastructure and system of laws that protect them here, should pay for those services. How about charging huge fees for the streets that serve their plants and the police who offer security and the schools that educate their workforce? That's not going to happen either, not with most politicians in their back pockets. So maybe it's time for a little citizen action, like scrounging enough money for ads that identify the corporate defectors, so the rest of us can decide whether we'll continue to patronize them. In addition, let's make it an election issue. Let those of us who are holding the bag decide if we really want to vote for those who allow this kind of economic injustice. Until these insidious inversions are brought under control, they're another way ordinary citizens are played for suckers. In our country, the one these corporations are abandoning, we still have a right to vote. Let's use it. (c) 2014 Bob Franken Distributed by King Features Synd.
through. It's important to keep an eagle eye toward the end; you want crisp, not brown. 5. When completely cool, serve. If there are any leftovers, store in airtight container up to three days. Variation: Stir 1 teaspoon pimenton de la vera (smoked Spanish paprika) and 1/2 teaspoon sugar into the salt before adding. For more information on
