• When people wrote with quill pens, it was customary to carry a small knife in order to cut new pens— called a penknife. • Today ballpoint ink is dye dissolved in vegetable oils and/or castor oil. • When the first ballpoint pens went on sale on in 1945 at Gimbels in New York City, 5,000 people jammed the store to get a chance to buy one for $12.50 which was equal to a day's pay. Fifty extra police officers were called and 47 people fainted in the crush. 10,000 pens were sold in six hours, and an average of 6,000 pens were sold daily for four months after that. This in spite of the fact that the pens did not work very well.

papers using ribbons strung through holes, or drops of wax to seal them together.

• Every second, about 125 ballpoint pens are sold around the world.

• The first stapler was invented in the 1700s for the benefit of King Louis XV of France. Every single staple was made by hand and inscribed with his insignia.

• Bic owns one-third of the ballpoint market in the U.S. • In 95% of cases, if a person is given a new pen, the first word that they write will be their name.

STAPLERS • Before the invention of staples, people would bind

• George McGill patented the modern stapler in 1866, but his contraption weighed 2.5 lbs (1.1 kg) and was not very portable. Each staple had to be inserted individually. McGill showcased his invention at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.

• McGill's design was improved in 1905, but the stapler had to be smacked with a mallet to secure the staple because the staples were connected to each other with a thin bit of metal.

ington model manufactured in 1919. It sold for $760 on eBay.

• At first the stapler was such a rare contraption that firms would buy a single stapler and the entire company had to share it.

PENCILS

• In the 1920s Swingline invented a stapler that used a row of staplers that were connected by glue instead of by metal. This made stapling easy and quick, and mallets were no longer required. • The world’s most expensive stapler was an antique Rem-

• In 2012, $80 million worth of staplers were sold in the U.S., and Swingline remains the major manufacturer.

• When an oak tree tipped over in Cumbria, England, in the mid-1500s, a deposit of extremely pure graphite was discovered underneath it. Graphite is a form of carbon. Other graphite deposits are soft, but this deposit was solid. Bits could be sawn off into sticks. The locals used these sticks for marking sheep. Today it remains the only graphite deposit found in solid form.

• Because solid graphite had never been heard of, people mistook it for a form of lead, giving us what we now call "pencil lead" even though pencils have no lead in them.

• You can make pencil marks permanent by washing them in skimmed milk.

• The news of these writing sticks spread around the world, and England held a monopoly on pencils for centuries.

• John Steinbeck is said to have used more than 300 pencils to write his novel "East of Eden."

• The first pencils made from these graphite sticks were wrapped in string or leather. Around 1560, an Italian couple invented the prototype for the modern-day pencil by encasing a stick of graphite inside a hollowed-out stick of wood. This prevented the pencil lead from breaking and prevented the black carbon from rubbing off on the fingers. Later, this method was improved by splitting a stick in half, hollowing out the center, inserting the graphite, and then gluing the two halves of the stick together. This is how pencils are still made today. • During the Napoleonic wars, England refused to export any graphite to France, and Napoleon was desperate for pencils. In 1795, officer Nicholas Jacques Conte ground soft graphite into powder, mixed it with clay, pressed it into sticks, and baked them in a kiln. The success of this formula broke the English monopoly on pencils because soft graphite is widely available. The recipe Conte concocted is used by pencil manufacturers today.

PENCIL FACTS • 14 billion pencils are manufactured each year. • A tree can make around 300,000 pencils. • Hexagonal pencils outsell round by 10 to 1.

• Carpenters' pencils are rectangular so they don't roll away during work.

• During World War II rotary pencil sharpeners were outlawed in Britain because they wasted so much scarce graphite and wood, so pencils had to be sharpened with knives.

ERASERS • Until the 1770s, the only way of erasing pencil marks was to take a bit of bread, moisten it, ball it up, and rub it on the paper. Then one day British engineer Edward Nairne absentmindedly picked up a piece of rubber instead of breadcrumbs, and discovered it erased the pencil marks even better. • Pencils leave a mark on paper because the graphite mixes with the fiber in the paper. Erasers work because their polymers are stickier than the paper, so graphite particles stick to the eraser instead of the paper. • Teachers originally resisted the idea of having pencils equipped with erasers because they felt it encouraged students to make mistakes. • Pink rubber erasers usually are mixed with powdered pumice to increase abrasiveness. • Today the typical pink eraser on the tip of a pencil is made from vinyl instead of rubber. • Johnny Carson regularly played with pencils at his "Tonight Show" desk. These pencils were specially made with erasers at both ends to avoid on-set accidents.

Noteworthy Inventions

THE TABULATOR • On January 8, 1889, the first tabulating machine was patented by Herman Hollerith. The invention heralded the modern era of machine data processing. • Born in Buffalo, NY, Hollerith received a Ph.D. in engineering from Columbia University in 1890, and taught mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology before going to work for the Census Bureau. • Hollerith's job with the Census Bureau involved compiling statistics. Back then, it took 8 years to tabulate the census information— and the census was taken once every 10 years. Hollerith knew there must be a better way. He worked on the problem even after leaving the Census Office for a better job with an engineering firm. • Then one day he took a train trip. The railroad had been plagued with robbers who posed as passengers. To help catch them, the engineers kept track of everybody on board. They had a card for every person on board, and would punch holes in it to record descriptions of the passengers: punch here for light hair; there for dark hair. Punch out A, B, or C for blue eyes, brown eyes, or green eyes. Punch this corner for short people, or that corner for tall people. This gave Hollerith an idea. • Several weeks later his invention was ready: an electric tabulator. Wherever there was a hole in a card, an electrical connection would be made and a counter would register it. • He subsequently set up the Tabulating Machine Company and began to improve the design of an automatic card-feed system, a keypunch, and punch cards, which formed the foundation of the modern information processing industry.

• Hollerith fought an uphill battle to get the notice he deserved. For three years he tried unsuccessfully to get financial backing and corporate interest. Finally, he asked Boston city officials to let him tabulate the town's death records. In just a few days, he tabulated data that would have kept many clerks busy for weeks. People were finally impressed, and the Army hired him to tabulate some statistics. Next he took his invention to the Paris Exposition, where he won a gold medal. • Then he applied for the job of tabulating the 1890 census. The Bureau of the Census set up a competition between all people who were interested in the contract. Herman and his electric tabulator were finished before the others were half through. He got the job. When the census was taken, it took Herman and 30 electric tabulators only six weeks to compile most of the information that had previously required eight years to accomplish. • His tabulator machines rapidly spread across the world. Countries around the world used them for their census taking, and insurance companies used them as well. Even today, his method of keeping track of information is used everywhere extensively. • In 1910, Hollerith sold his Tabulating Machine Company for a few million dollars, but he never liked the new president. In fact, he refused to buy any stock in the company. Perhaps he came to regret that, for if Herman Hollerith had invested $200,000 in that business in 1910, it would have been worth about a billion dollars by 1970. The new owners changed the name of the company and eventually became one of the world's largest corporations, selling computer hardware and software. Can you name the company?

it was devastating news to me. I make wine, and have for years. I do not drink anything except wine, and the thought of never being able to drink again is very disturbing. Is there a possibility that I may be able to drink wine again in the future? The doctor's assessment seemed pretty harsh to me. -- J.C.

Pancreatitis Means Giving Up Alcohol DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to the emergency ward with severe chest pains and bloating. I was sure I was having a heart attack. After tests, a CT scan revealed I had pancreatitis; also, my potassium was low and sodium was critically low. I am 62, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weigh 210; I have Type 2 diabetes with an A1C of 6.7 and high blood pressure. I was discharged after four days with no restrictions other than to eat light and refrain from alcohol 100 percent for the rest of my life to avoid another occurrence. I had never heard of pancreatitis, and

ANSWER: Acute pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that makes digestive enzymes and insulin. Acute pancreatitis can be very severe, even life-threatening on occasion. There are many causes, but the most common in North America are gallstones and alcohol. The diagnosis is made from the history and physical exam, and an elevated pancreas enzyme level, usually amylase or lipase. These often are elevated into the thousand range. A CT scan also can help confirm the diagnosis. Before concluding that alcohol is the cause of the pancreatitis, it's important to make sure there is nothing blocking the pancreatic and common bile duct, such as a stone or tumor. The CT scan is good, but if there is doubt, an endoscopy may need to be performed.

If your doctor determined that the cause is alcohol, then I'm afraid I have to agree that no amount of alcohol is safe. Drinking even modest amounts of wine, even months or years later, could bring about pancreatitis again. In addition to the pain and suffering that go with an episode, the more episodes of acute pancreatitis you have, the more likely you are to develop chronic pancreatitis (with constant pain), pancreatic insufficiency (leading to inability to properly digest food) and worsen your diabetes. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 86 years old. I had pneumonia in May 2013 and was very sick for seven days in the hospital. Since I got home, I have had no sense of smell or taste. Can you tell me what caused it, and whether I will ever get it back? -- L.M. ANSWER: Since it happened in the hospital, it's likely that something happened there to cause it. Sudden loss of smell and taste most likely are associated with infection, injury and medications. The organisms that cause pneumonia could possibly affect your sense of smell as well (disorders of both smell and taste

usually are primarily related to loss of ability to smell). Injury can happen in the hospital, especially if you had to have a breathing tube placed through your nose. That leaves drugs as the other category, and MANY medications can cause loss of sense of smell. Since this has been going on for more than a year and a half, the only common reversible cause is medication. It would be worthwhile to ask your doctor to review all of your medicines, especially any that might have been started around the time of the pneumonia. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Plant-Based Diet Improves Inflammation

Vegans Have Less Stress and Anxiety A vegan diet may lower your stress and anxiety levels, according to a study published online in Nutritional Neuroscience. Researchers surveyed 620 vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores about mood. Increased fruit and vegetable intake resulted in lower anxiety scores for male vegan participants, compared with nonvegans. Female vegan participants experienced reduced stress levels as a result of their animal-free diets as well as their lower intakes of sweets.

A plant-based diet may reduce inflammation, according to a study published online in Nutrition Research. Researchers examined the nutrient intake for 63 overweight or obese participants following vegan, vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, or omnivorous diet. Those assigned to the vegan or vegetarian groups consumed more fiber and less cholesterol and saturated fat. They also experienced lower dietary inflammation scores compared to those on nonvegetarian or semivegetarian diets. A high-fiber, low-fat, plant-based diet may prevent and help treat chronic diseases linked with inflammation, including rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain forms of cancer.

This would not be remarkable, except that a genealogist later showed that Montgomery and the notorious axe-murderer were actually sixth cousins once removed. • Those who study such things say that if you grew up in the era before color TV, you're more likely to dream in black and white. • In April 2014, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission moved to forbid the sale of stuffed baby alligators in "an unnatural body or body part positioning" -- including upright human poses. • You might be surprised to learn that during the Revolutionary War, only one out of every six able-bodied men in the American colonies actually took up arms. • John Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola, came up with the recipe by boiling coca leaves, kola nuts and a variety of herbs in a pot in his backyard. "SMALL MOVE, BIG CHANGE" by Caroline L. Arnold (Penguin Books, $16) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell It's that time of year when we flip the calendar page and start to think about ways to improve our lives. And yet, the vast majority of us will never follow through on our New Year's resolutions. Perhaps, argues Caroline Arnold in "Small Move, Big Change," it's because we're setting our sights too far away. A huge, vague goal like "lose weight" or "exercise more" is abstract and overwhelming, making it difficult to know where to begin, much less stick to once the January zeal has written off. Arnold suggests instead a simpler and more effective way of accomplishing big goals: breaking them up into chunks that she calls microresolutions. It's a classic technique, but Arnold's modern approach calls for a little soul-searching as well. Onesize-fits-all goals often fail to take into account an individual's particular needs and abilities. She advocates committing to tiny goals that are personalized,

targeted, specific and realistic -- essentially, goals so easy to achieve that you'd feel silly not doing them. This combines the benefit of immediate results with the high of instant gratification, a mix that can be surprisingly powerful. Arnold presents herself not as a guru, but as a fellow pilgrim on the self-improvement journey. Writing in a clear, friendly and accessible style, she shares copious examples of real-life situations translated into workable (and nonworkable) microresolutions, alongside supportive quotes from experts both scientific and philosophical. Learning to craft effective goals is both an everyday tool and a lifelong art. A key factor is the identification and breaking of negative or resentful mindsets that are standing in the way of positive change. And that's a skill that can carry through into every aspect of life, no matter what the date on the calendar. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Spice World's Golden Treasure Curry is a heady melange of spices and pungent root vegetables that come together to form a symphony of flavors that create the essence of the blend. Yet when you hear the word "curry" you might assume it refers to a dish popular in Indian cuisine. Curry is used in countless ways in cuisines all over the world -- from Asia to Europe, the Caribbean and South America. The amalgamation that is curry, in all its forms, represents the spice world coming together in an exotic and piquant melting pot of flavors extracted from pods and seeds, peppers, wine, ginger and garlic. The vast array of ingredients represented in curries hails from Asia and its subcontinents. But these highly coveted seasonings eventually made their way to the rest of the world. Curry is an immigrant that became a naturalized citizen in many countries, with a unique version born in each new land. As the foundation of spices that constituted the original curry moved from one place to the next, the curries themselves took on different qualities. Many curries are the color of gold, and it is an interesting coincidence, because the curry spices at one time traded as if they were gold. For thousands of years, humans have valued the qualities of aromatic plants. Spices were coveted everywhere and used in everything from cuisine to medicines. In Asia, spices moved across the continent by land, and were the heart of an important and lucrative commerce. Hundreds of years after that, with the invention of sophisticated navigational vessels, explorers and traders took to the seas, along with their prized cargo of spices. The curries we see today are descendants of mixtures that date back 4,000 years. Thanks to archeological advances, scientists can determine what our ancestors ate by examining skeletons and ancient pieces of pottery. We know that even then, a form of curry was part of the primitive culinary landscape. While curries vary from place to place, they all seem to have evolved from the basic spices of ginger, garlic and turmeric. Curries can consist of countless ingredients, from cumin and coriander to hot chilies and lemongrass. While some curries are dry, most are added to a stew, combined with actual curry, bay or lime leaves, and vegetable stock or coconut milk.

Curry and vegetables are a wonderful combination, elevating vegetable dishes to tasty, stand-alone heights. Try my recipe for Quick Curried Vegetables, and make your own Mild Curry Powder to use in this and countless other recipes!

QUICK CURRIED VEGETABLES This recipe can be adapted to fit the seasons. Cubes of squash, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, broccoli florets or tender greens all work well. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

2 teaspoons olive or vegetable oil 3 tablespoons mild curry powder (recipe below or bottled brand) 1 large onion, chopped (about 1 1/2 cups) 1 large bell pepper, seeded, ribs removed and sliced into strips 4 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 3 tablespoons tomato paste 1 (13.5-ounce) can reduced-fat coconut milk 1 cup low-sodium vegetable broth 3 medium-size red-skinned potatoes (about 1 pound), scrubbed and cut into 1-inch chunks 1 (9-ounce) package frozen cut green beans 1 small cauliflower, cut into small florets (about 4 cups) 1/2 cup frozen green peas 1/4 cup chopped cilantro 1 to 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

1. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add curry powder and cook, stirring for about 30 seconds. Add the onion, bell pepper, garlic, salt and pepper, and cook 5 minutes, or until golden brown, stirring frequently. Add tomato paste and cook for 2 minutes. 2. Stir in coconut milk and broth. Bring to boil. Add potatoes, reduce heat to medium, cover and cook 15 minutes, or until potatoes are still firm but almost done.

3. Stir in green beans and cauliflower. Cover, and cook 5 minutes more, or until vegetables are tender. Remove from heat. Stir in peas, cilantro and lime juice. Serve with white or basmati brown rice, if desired. Serves 6.

MILD CURRY POWDER • • • • • •

2 tablespoons ground cumin 2 tablespoons ground coriander 2 teaspoons ground turmeric 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1/2 teaspoon mustard seed 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

In a blender or food processor, combine cumin, coriander, turmeric, red pepper flakes, mustard seed and ginger. Process to a fine powder. Store in an airtight container. Makes 1/4 cup. *** Visit Angela Shelf Medearis' website at www.divapro.com. PHOTO: HOLLYWOOD -- As we enter the new year with its promises of new technology for our social media, did you know that beautiful actress Hedy Lamarr -- who starred in 31 films, including Cecil B. DeMille's epic "Samson and Delilah," "Ziegfeld Girl" and "Boom Town" with Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy -had a hand in the creation that very same technology. Lamar, with her business partner, composer George Antheil, invented a secret communication system for radio-guided torpedoes for the Navy during World War II that led to the creation of GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology? In 1841, before becoming president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln created a flotation system for lifting riverboats stuck on sandbars, which involved putting bellows on the bottom of the boat and inflating them like balloons to raise the boat off the sandbar.

Singer and actor Harry Connick, Jr. invented a computer system and method of presenting music pages to musicians, digitally, in an orchestra.

Top model Christie Brinkley designed an educational toy that helps kids learn the alphabet, in 199l.

Mentalist Uri Geller, who can allegedly bend spoons with his mind, patented a telephone shield used today in cellphones to protect us from radiation.

In 1988, Jamie Lee Curtis created a disposable diaper that included a waterproof pocket that holds baby wipes.

Eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes came up with the steel bra worn by Jane Russell in "The Outlaw" in 1943.

Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller invented a hydro-therapeutic stimulator for spa-type tubs in 1999.

Comedian and ventriloquist Paul Winchell, of Paul Winchell and puppet Jerry Mahoney fame, held 16 patents before he passed away in 2005. Among them was a device for filling blood containers, a warning indicator for interrupted power supply for freezers, a flour sifter, a hand pump for transferring liquids, a non-bulging garter fastener, a lens cover, animation cells and the most important of all the above inventions ... an artificial heart. Q: Can you tell me when "Vikings" will be back? It seems like it's been gone forever! -- Jeremy T., via email A: You don't have much longer to wait. The History Channel's hit historical-fiction drama will return Thursday, Feb. 19, at 10 p.m. ET. The new 10-episode third season begins with Ragnar (played by Travis Fimmel) as king, and follows the great responsibility that now rests on the shoulders of the former farmer. With the promise of new land from the English, Ragnar leads his people to an uncertain fate on the shores of Wessex. King Ecbert (Linus Roache) has made many promises, and it remains to be seen if he will keep them. But ever the restless wanderer, Ragnar is searching for something more -- and he finds it in the mythical city of Paris. Rumored to be impenetrable to outside forces, Ragnar and his band of Norsemen must come together to break down its walls and cement the Vikings' legend in history. The gripping family saga of Ragnar, Rollo (Clive Standen), Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) and Bjorn (Alexander Ludwig) continues as alliances and loyal friendships are tested, faith is questioned and relationships are strained. "Vikings" tells the extraordinary tales of the lives and epic adventures of these warriors, and portrays life in the Dark Ages, a world ruled by raiders and explorers, through the eyes of Viking society. *** Q: I remember a while back you reported that David Letterman was going to retire and Stephen Colbert was to

A: CBS has announced that David Letterman's final show as host of "The Late Show" will be Travis Fimmel May 20. Letterman has been a prominent fixture in late-night television for decades, and upon his retirement in May, he'll hold the record as the longest-tenured host in late-night talk-show history. *** Q: Was "The Blacklist" canceled? I haven't seen it in a while. -- Trudy F., Cincinnati A: The James Spader-starring NBC drama was not canceled; it merely went on winter hiatus. The addictive series will be back with all-new episodes beginning Super Bowl Sunday, which is Feb. 1. *** Q: Do you know yet if "Legends" got picked up for another season? It's my favorite new show of 2014. -- Michael J., Brunswick, Georgia A: The TNT series based on the award-winning book by Robert Latell will be back this summer for a second season. So you'll get 10 more episodes of action-hero Sean Bean kicking butt and taking names. Also, in case you're interested, TNT recently announced the perennial favorite "Rizzoli & Isles" will be back for an 18-episode sixth season of crime-busting and mystery-solving, with Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander (as Det. Jane Rizzoli and Dr. Maura Isles, respectively) returning to lead the charge. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. • Just in time for soup season (and my new year's resolutions), here's a great fat swap: Drain and rinse two cups of white beans and puree with a cup of no-sodium vegetable broth. You can use this as a thickener in place of heavy cream for soups and stews. -- JoAnn

• Strawberry season is approaching, and here's a great tip for freezing berries: Slip a berry into each section of an icecube tray and then stack them in the freezer. When frozen, transfer to a zipper-top bag and store in the freezer. They won't stick together, and you can just use what you need. • "Want to keep your pants from creasing on the hanger? Grab an empty paper-towel tube, and slit it down the side. When you slip it over the bottom of the hanger, it creates a wide curve for the pants to lie across, and no more crease!" -- M.U. in Colorado

Of those providers who did offer appointments, the median wait time was two weeks, but one-fourth had appointment times more than a month away. Ten percent only offered appointments more than two months away. (Most of states have requirements that patients be able to get care within one month.)

Depending on Medicaid for Health Care The Department of Health and Human Services was asked to survey three things from lists of Medicaid health-care providers: learn which providers could offer appointments to those with Medicaid, assess the wait times for care and find any differences between the availability between primary-care providers and specialists.

But it gets worse: Some providers who were accepting new patients wouldn’t give an appointment date without first having more information about the patient. Some wouldn’t make an appointment without seeing the patient’s records. Others wouldn’t accept patients with certain medical conditions. One wouldn’t see patients who were overweight. When it came to primary-care versus specialists, primary care providers were less likely to give an appointment. However, to get in to see a specialist took twice as long. Some took the winter off; some only worked a few days a week.

The results aren’t pretty. Half of providers could not offer appointments, either because they weren’t at the location where they were listed (43 percent), or because they weren’t participating in the plan or because they weren’t taking new patients (8 percent). Some providers couldn’t be found: No one had heard of them, or they had retired or left years ago. For those not accepting new patients, they were retiring, they had too many patients already or they were tired of all the no-shows for appointments.

As of last year, 69 million people depended on Medicaid, and they’re depending on inaccurate lists of providers when they’re seeking care. Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply2@gmail.com. OLD MAGAZINES Q: I have some Life magazines from April and October of 1945 and two National Geographic magazines from 1922. -- Norma, Wolf Point, Montana A: Your Life magazines might be fun to read, but the ones you have are worth only about $10 each, and that is assuming they are in good condition. There are always exceptions, such as issues that covered historic events or desirable covers. (Think VJ-Day and Marilyn Monroe covers.) National Geographic magazines, even early issues, are difficult to sell. Most of the ones I have seen in shops are priced in the $5 to $10 range. *** Q: I would like the value of the following items: sleigh bells, Mickey Mouse pop-up book, old cigar clipper and a "naughty Nellie" boot remover. -- Carol, Surprise, Arizona

I have some thoughts about your boot remover. I suspect it is probably a reproduction, since thousands have been sold in shops and at malls in recent years, all repros and most manufactured in Japan. There were several Mickey Mouse books published, and you might be able to find yours in one of my favorite reference books, "The Official Price Guide to Disney Collectibles" by Ted Hake and published by House of Collectibles. *** Q: I have a license plate that has "Tennessee" printed on top and large red letters "NO SHOW" in the middle and George Jones on its bottom. What is this plate, and does it have any value? -- Bill, Greene, Rhode Island A: My best guess is that country-western star George Jones did not show up for one of his scheduled appearances in Tennessee. You might contact the Automobile License Plate Collectors Club to get an idea of its value. The addresses are 118 Quaker Road, Hampton, VA 23669, and www. DEAR TRACY AND KELLY: Congratulations -- you will probably enjoy having a pet that both of you can take care of. Cats are very independent animals and have a lot of instinctive behaviors -- such as eating moderately, keeping themselves clean and covering up their droppings -- that make caring for them easier than taking care of most dogs. However, there are a few things you need to do to make your home a welcoming environment for your cat.

A covered cat bed, old carrier or other den should work; place the door so that your cat can see everything going on in the room. When you bring the cat home, let it out of the carrier near that cozy spot. • Likewise, have the new litter box in place and filled before the big day. Then, show the litter box to your new cat. • Set out food and water in what will be your cat's usual feeding spot, so that it can find it easily. (Of course, never locate bedding, litter box and food dishes close together). • Put a sturdy scratching post near the cat's living area.

A: What your friend probably is saying is that the backsplash behind the sink is standard wallboard (also known as drywall or sheetrock), which doesn't play nice with water. Areas of the house that have tile and see a lot of water being splashed around, along with high humidity (like the bathroom), use cementboard rather than wallboard.

face, reducing the chance that the tiles will slip down out of place.

However, most backsplashes are simply regular wallboard that's been painted over. Unless you're soaking the backsplash in water from the sprayer attachment, this area likely deals with only occasional sprinkles and splashes. You should be able to decorate this area with ceramic tile, and the wallboard should hold up just fine.

• Dry-fit tiles beforehand by laying them on a sheet of paper cut to the same height and width as the backsplash area, to make sure the pattern will work and to set the tile spacing (use plastic spacers to create even gaps between each tile).

Because the tile is going onto a vertical surface, you should attach the tiles with tile mastic, rather than thin-set mortar. The mastic will adhere faster to the sur-

Here are a few more tips to make the job easier and faster: • Before starting, measure the dimensions of the backsplash area. Then, sketch out the design you'd like.

• Mark the exact center point of your planned backsplash pattern on the wall. Then use a level to draw a straight vertical line through the center of that point (also known as a plumb line).

along with your supplies. Working from the bottom up, load the trowel with mastic. Spread the mastic across a section of the backsplash in a sweeping motion. • When placing the tile, again work from the bottom of the backsplash upward. Place spacers between the tiles to maintain the gap needed to add grout. • Cut tiles to fit when needed, not beforehand, so that you can get a precise measurement. HOME TIP: Run a bead of caulk along the base of a tiled backsplash to provide extra protection from water that may pool on the counter. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. Use Cash to Change Spending Habits Have you broken your New Year's resolutions

yet? Many people have. When it comes to resolving to get control of your finances, however, the longer you do it, the more you

If you write checks at the end of the month (or especially if you have automatic deposits and bill paying and never ever see the money), you don't have a close-up relationship with your cash. Money is far more subjective (and easier to spend) when you don't actually touch the cash. Consider a no-frills 30 days as your New Year's resolution, during which time you work to become more familiar with actual money on a daily basis. Resolve to go 30 days with no unnecessary expenditures. Mortgage, of course. Car payment, and food and utilities, of course. But for 30 days go without coffee on the way to work, meals out, impulse spending, movies and popcorn ... you get the idea. If it isn't necessary, don't spend. Start carrying cash if you're in the habit of only carrying credit or debit cards. When you leave the house each day, count up the cash you're carrying. If you need more, go to the ATM, but don't give in and use a credit card for purchases. Empty your pockets of change at the end of every day. Put it in a container with a lid and don't touch it. At the end of the month, count it up and put it toward a credit-card balance or savings. During the day, see how often you can get change in the form of coins, and add it to the pile. Pick a few bills for which you normally write a check and instead pay cash for money orders or cashier's checks.

After

Any activity having to do with finances is self-rewarding. You get to see the benefits of careful spending rather quickly. As you keep to your resolution, you'll see your expenses come down, your savings increase and maybe your health even get better if your financial goals keep you from spending money

on snacks while you're away from home. But the first step is to become more aware of money.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Send email to columnreply3@ gmail.com.

It's said that it takes 30 days to develop a habit. If you reduce your spending to necessities only for one month, it might become a habit you can keep.

1. Purchase tacks or small push pins and a stylish bulletin board, or paint the frame of an old one to match your hallway or room decor.

ENJOY HOLIDAY CARD PHOTOS YEAR-ROUND The photo collage on the wall catercorner from my friend Susan's kitchen catches my eye whenever I pop by her back door for a visit. Brimming with images of kids, interesting friends, exotic places and happy baby smiles, it's always an attention-grabber. I call it a "hands on" Pinterest board, but to her -- a retired fifth-grade teacher -- it's an old-school bulletin board that informs and entertains.

"My stainless-steel refrigerator is clear of photos nowadays, and I love the clean look of the easy-to-do wall arrangement that hangs year-round," she said as she pointed to her collection. "The beautiful photos tell the annual stories of our favorite people. Plus, they're a conversation starter that leads to sharing the ins and outs of our lives. A birth, a graduation, a wedding, a funeral, a trip to the Rock of Gibraltar."

2. Choose holiday photo cards that have particular meaning to you and your family. Trim them to focus on essential subject matter and to provide plenty of space to fit them all on the board. School-age kids can use a ruler and pencil to create lines as a guide before they cut with scissors or a paper cutter. 3. Set the bulletin board flat on a table. Arrange the photos in a pleasing combination. Attach to the board with the pins or tacks. Hang on the wall. 4. Next year, when the 2015 holiday photos are ready to arrange, place the old photos in an envelope labeled "2014," and store in a box for safe keeping and viewing. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide.
