ORANGES byJanet Spencer On February 16, 1957, the first ship to transport orange juice in stainless steel tanks left Port Canaveral, Florida. Come along with Tidbits as we appreciate oranges!

ORANGE HISTORY • Most types of citrus originated in southeast-ern Asia and India. Many modern varieties were developed in China and Malaysia and transplanted across Asia and Europe. • California used to be the top orange produc-ing state, but Florida surpassed California in 1942 and now produces three times as many oranges as California. (The average difference in rainfall between Florida and California amounts to an extra 1,140,000 gallons per acre falling on Florida.) Floridians call them orange groves, but Californians call them or-ange orchards. • Brazil is the world’s leading orange producer, with an output almost as high as that of the next three countries combined. Almost 99% of the fruit is processed for export. The United States is the second largest producer, followed by India, China, Mexico, and Spain. • The total weight of citrus fruit produced in the U.S. each year is greater than that of any other fruit tree in the U.S.

ORANGES (continued):

• 98% of Florida oranges are harvested by hand. Over 100,000 people in Florida are employed in the citrus industry.

WORD ORIGINS • The Sanskrit word ‘naranga’ meaning ‘fragrant’ passed into French, where the word ‘or’ means ‘gold.’ From there it became ‘orange’ meaning ‘gold and fragrant. ’ •The Cedars of Lebanon had round, hard orange-colored cones (like pine cones), and the word for cedar was ‘citron.’ When a new fruit showed up that resembled them, it too was dubbed ‘citron.’ This is the origin of the word ‘citrus’ which actually means ‘cedar.’ • Tangerines are a variety of citrus which first appeared in Tangier, a city in Morocco. (A person from Tangier is also called a Tangerine.) Mandarin oranges originated in China, where they speak Mandarin. Clementines may be named after Father Clement Rodier who hybridized them in an orchard in Algeria.

oranges growing from a lemon rootstock, or lemons growing from an orange rootstock. In fact, a single citrus tree can have numerous grafts so that it bears lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, kumquats, and oranges all on the same tree at the same time. • During cold snaps, owners of orange groves will sometimes spray their trees with water in order to form ice. The trees will die if the temperature drops to 24F (-4C), but with a layer of ice, the temperature stays at 32F (0C) if the wind is calm and conditions are right. • The lifespan of a typical orange tree is about 40 years, but there’s one tree in Europe that was planted in 1421 that lived until the year 1894 and survived several transplants. Some trees in Florida are more than a century old. • Citrus trees are evergreen. An orange tree seedling doesn’t start to bear fruit until it’s about 15 years old. Grafting new shoots to old roots makes orange production much faster.

when it’s wet because moisture causes the skin to tighten which makes it very fragile. Orange picking has to wait until the dew dries in the morning and until after the sun has come out following rainstorms.

• Oranges have a natural wax which protects the fruit from dehydration. During processing, the wax is washed off as the fruit is cleaned. Therefore, an artificial (and edible) wax is applied to the skin of the orange before it leaves the processing plant. Too much wax and the orange suffocates. Too little and it shrivels due to dehydration. • An orange will last about a month after being picked. An orange will not continue to ripen after it is picked. • Oranges that grow high on the tree are sweeter than those that grow on the lower branches. Oranges that grow on the outside branches are sweeter than those growing on inside branches. Oranges growing on the south side of the tree are sweeter than those on the north side of the tree. • The same is true about the amount of juice in an orange, and the amount of vitamin C it contains. Within a single orange, the blossom end will always

be sweeter than the stem end. California oranges, where the climate is arid, have thicker skins than Florida oranges, where the climate is wet. • Green oranges are just as sweet as orange oranges, and oranges only turn orange when the weather turns cold. Oranges that have turned orange in the cold weather will revert to green again if the weather warms up once more. In many areas, such as Thailand, all oranges remain green con-

stantly and never turn orange at all. • A single orange provides about two-thirds of your daily requirement of vitamin C.

GETTING GASSED • To change the color of a green orange, the fruit is placed in air-tight containers and then surrounded by ethylene gas for up to four days. Ethylene gas is a natural substance that is given off when fruits and vegetables ripen. The gas eliminates the chlorophyll in the skin, allowing the orange pigment to show through. This is the same process by which a green leaf turns orange in the fall as chlorophyll production tapers off with cold weather. • The use of ethylene gas was first discovered when Californians noticed that oranges kept in a room where a kerosene stove was being used turned orange very quickly. At first they assumed it was the heat, so packinghouses began ‘ripening’ their oranges in heated rooms, which only served to dehydrate the fruit. Eventually it was discovered that it was the ethylene gas produced in the combustion of kero-

sene which was actually affecting the color of the oranges.

JUICE • The search for an orange juice concentrate began during World War II when soldiers needed nutritious drinks in the field. The process of concentrating the juice was finally perfected in 1948. Today, about 96 percent of Florida’s oranges are processed into juice. • The majority of California’s crop is sold as fresh fruit, whereas Florida’s oranges become juice products. • 53% of total global frozen concentrated orange juice production comes from Brazil. • Orange juice squeezed at home will begin to turn bitter within hours because it reacts with oxygen. Orange juice squeezed in a factory is pasteurized which helps prevent this. • When Citrus Hill decided to call their orange juice “Fresh Choice,” the FDA seized 2,000 cases because the label, reading “Citrus Hill Fresh Choice Orange Juice” led people to believe the juice was fresh when it was not.

THE BISSELLS There aren’t too many folks who haven’t heard of Bissell carpet care products, but how much do you know about the inventors? This week, Tidbits focuses on Melville and Anna Bissell, the people who brought us the carpet sweeper. • Anna Sutherland was a 19-year-old schoolteacher when she married Melville Bissell and moved to Michigan. They opened a crockery and china business together in Grand Rapids in 1871. She found it very frustrating that all the dust from their business settled in the carpets and it was impossible to remove it from the fibers with a broom. The dust was also contributing to Melville’s health problems. He began working on a device that would sweep it all away! • Melville Bissell’s carpet sweeper utilized rubber wheels whose back-andforth motion drove a set of bristles, which in turn agitated the dirt and swept it inside. He received a patent for his sweeper in 1876. When friends began asking where they could purchase the contraption, Bissell moved away from crockery and toward the large potential market of the sweeper. • The Bissells hired women neighbors, who worked out of their homes in Grand Rapids to tie bundles of hog bristles with string. The bunches were then dipped in hot pitch and inserted into brush rollers and trimmed. Anna made the rounds of the homes, collecting the pieces in a clothes basket, returning to the Bissell shop to assemble the sweepers. • Once production was underway, Melville hit the road to peddle his new product, knocking on doors and calling on houseware stores.

•During his demonstrations, Melville tossed a handful of dirt onto the carpet and quickly swept it up with his newfangled gadget. The price was $1.50 and the sweepers sold like hotcakes. Anna took a trip to Philadelphia and persuaded John Wanamaker, owner of that city’s first department store, to take on the carpet sweeper. • In 1883, the Bissells built their first manufacturing plant in Grand Rapids. Unfortunately, a fire destroyed the factory the following year. Anna quickly secured loans from local banks which enabled the Bissells to begin manufacturing just 20 days after the fire. • More tragedy struck in 1889 when Melville passed away at age 45. Although she was raising their five children, Anna quickly stepped up to lead the company, becoming the first female CEO in America. She expanded the business internationally, and within a few years, the factory was producing 1,000 sweepers daily. Even Queen Victoria of England was a fan, demanding that the castle be “Bisselled” on a weekly basis. • Anna was responsible for introducing progressive labor practices such as workmen’s comp and pension plans to her company. She became a civic leader, opening the Bissell House, a refuge for youth and immigrants. • Anna Bissell held the reins of the company for more than 30 years before she passed the baton to her son, Melville, Jr., who pushed the company toward the new era of the vacuum cleaner and rug shampooer. Even today, Bissell remains a family-owned company. In the midst of all the world’s technological advances, the original carpet sweeper remains virtually unchanged.

SOUVENIR TUMBLERS Q: I began collecting turn-of-the-century souvenir tumblers several years ago. I now have about three dozen pieces and wonder if they will ever increase in value. They seem to sell in the $10 to $25 range, the same as when I first began collecting. -- Paula, Wheatridge, Colorado A: Your pieces sound like examples of flashing. According to "Glass A to Z" by David Shotwell, this type of glass is achieved when a thin layer of glass --- usually colored --- is applied over one that is clear or lightly tinted. The process involves dipping the object into molten glass, a process quite different from that of making cased or overlay glass, which requires a thicker layer. Most of the pieces I've seen are either amber or ruby color, and as you indicated, almost all have been souvenir pieces. In my personal collection, I have a small toothpick holder

LEMONS • Christopher Columbus introduced citrus trees to the island of Haiti in 1493 during his second voyage. •The demand for lemons and their scurvy-preventing properties hit a peak during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Miners were willing to pay huge sums for a single lemon. As a result, lemon trees were planted in abundance throughout California. •Today, California and Arizona produce 95% of the entire U.S. lemon crop. California produces more lemons than all of Europe. •Lemons are technically berries, as are oranges, watermelons, and tomatoes. •Although lemon trees need lots of sunshine and cannot tolerate killing frosts, they grow surprisingly well in poor soil, even in sandy soils. Lemon trees bloom and produce fruit year-round. Each tree can produce between 500 and 600 pounds of lemons in a year, which amounts to up to 3,000 lemons annually. •Lemon juice is about 5 percent citric acid, making it a natural for slowing the browning or oxidation of fresh, raw foods: apples, avocados, bananas, and other fruits. •When given a choice of orange, grapefruit, peaches, apples, or lemon, cattle will eat lemons first. This is thought to be because the citric acid in lemons aids in digestion.

Q: A number of years ago, my husband took me to London to celebrate our anniversary. During that trip, we saw "Miss Saigon" at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It was one of the most thrilling nights of my life. I would like to find one of the posters from that production. Can you help me? -- Barbara, Rochester, New York A: "Dress Circle" was the go-to shop for memorabilia concerning London theatrical productions. It closed in February 2013, but the company continues to do business online. I checked its website and found a "Miss Saigon" poster for about $12. Contact is info@dresscircle.com, and http://www.dresscircle.com.

•Before juicing, roll a room-temperature lemon under your palm to break down the cells inside the fruit that hold liquid. If a fruit is especially hard, microwave it for 20 seconds. The average lemon holds about 3 tablespoons of juice and has about 8 seeds. • In 2003, the heaviest lemon ever grown was recorded in Kefar Zeitim, Israel. It weighed just over 11.5 pounds (5.265 kg), had a circumference of 29 inches (74 cm), and was 13.7 inches (35 cm) long. • You may store lemons at room temperature for about two weeks. They will keep for up to six weeks in a plastic bag in the refrigerator. Sprinkle them with water to keep them fresh in the plastic bag. You can also freeze lemons.

HEALTH BENEFITS • Lemons are nature’s top source of citric acid, a life essential found in the cells of all living creatures. Fresh lemon juice has only 4 calories per tablespoon. • They are one of nature’s seven top sources of potassium, a mineral that promotes clear thinking, aids in normalizing blood pressure, and works with sodium to regulate the body’s water balance. The juice of half a lemon in warm water helps eliminate toxins and ease aches, cleanse the liver, and stimulate the metabolism. • High in vitamin C, lemons prevent scurvy, a disease that causes bleeding gums, loose teeth and aching joints. day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor can have one ounce of lemon juice a day. • Add the juice of one lemon to an equal amount of hot water for an anti-bacterial gargle. • Lemon juice promotes perspiration and helps block pain. When lemon juice is heated, salicylic acid – the chemical precursor of aspirin’s active ingredient – is produced. • Citric acid can help eliminate calcium deposits in the arteries as well as pancreatic and kidney stones. • Lemons contain modified citrus pectin and limonoids, which have been shown in a recent study to prohibit the spread of cancer cells, slow cancer cell growth, and induce cancer cell death.

No single one of these interventions can prevent all falls. All of them together will prevent many. Your medication list, even a simple over-the-counter sleeping aid, is the best place to start looking to reduce risk of falls. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My dad has an extreme case of COPD and is on oxygen. He gets winded just walking across the house. Dad lives in Montana; I live in Florida and would like him to come visit me during the cold Montana winters. I have heard that it would be easier for him to breathe at a lower altitude. But people have told him that if he comes to Florida, he would never be able to go back to Montana because he wouldn't be used to the altitude any longer. Is this true? -- D.W.

SLEEP MEDICATIONS LINKED TO FALLS DEAR DR. ROACH: You've discussed sleep aids and your belief that it is best to get off all of this type of medication. I am healthy, 75 (take no meds), exercise with weights, do swimming and running regularly, and since 2007 have been taking an over-the-counter sleep aid called doxylamine nightly with no apparent side effects. Do you see a problem with continuing? -- A.B. ANSWER: Unfortunately, I do see a problem. Odds are that you won't have a problem taking this medication; it's cheap and is effective for you. However, there is unequivocal, abundant, incontrovertible evidence that antihistamines like doxylamine or diphenhydramine increase fall risk. If you drive, they increase accident risk. They also can cause confusion. Although the benefit to you from quitting is small, if I can get enough people to minimize their sleep medications, I know I will prevent some falls. Falls are so often the first step in a progression from health to disability that I want to do all I can to prevent them. Adequate lighting in the house at nighttime, especially between the bedroom and bathroom, avoiding obstructions like area rugs and the addition of stairway railings and tub grab bars all help reduce fall risk. Exercise programs -- like the kind you are doing, but also tai chi -- are great at preventing falls. So is getting your eyes checked.

ANSWER: The lower oxygen levels at high altitude, like some cities in Montana, can be a real problem for people with any kind of chronic lung disease. In those cases, supplemental oxygen or a lower altitude can make people feel better and even live longer. Given that your dad is already on oxygen, a lower altitude would be similar to dialing up the oxygen a bit. He may certainly prefer Florida's winters to Montana's. We begin to be accustomed to high altitude in a few days, but full acclimatization takes weeks. Your dad will be able to return home after his visit. The booklet on COPD explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis, the two elements of COPD, in detail. For Advertising Information Call 954-667-3237 The story of Avery and Route 66, the legendary "Mother Road" he helped to build, is fascinating ... fascinating because it almost didn't happen. Avery, who had immigrated to Oklahoma as a teenager in a covered wagon, discovered at an early age that travelers often were confronted by "the mighty monarch mud." As soon as he became an adult, he began his fight for better roads, not just in Oklahoma, but throughout the country. Avery became so obsessed that several wealthy Tulsans talking one day set out to see who could tell the biggest lie. The winner was a man who said he heard Cy Avery speak to a crowd without mentioning roads.

"FATHER OF ROUTE 66: THE STORY OF CY AVERY" by Susan Croce Kelly (University of Oklahoma Press, $24.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Cy Avery was a Tulsa-based oilman and real-estate investor. He also was a visionary. Before he cobbled together plans for a national highway that would stretch almost 2,500 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles, traveling through most states was a challenge, since few roads were even paved.

Getting approval and funds to build the national highway was not easy. For example, he met with opposition by members of Oklahoma's Klu Klux Klan and had a dustup with the then-governor of Kentucky over the numbering of the highway. Even the route proved controversial when states and towns bypassed by the road began to protest. Route 66 was finally established in 1926, and paving began that same year. By the Depression era it had become a way West. Avery's Route 66 would become a fixture in the imagination of not just America but of the world, and it would help bring about another iconic road -- the Interstate Highway System of the 1950s. QUINOA WITH GREEN ONIONS

Tasty

• • • • • •

1 cup quinoa 2 teaspoons vegetable or olive oil 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 cups low-sodium vegetable broth 2 tablespoons margarine 2 green onions, thinly sliced

The Spice of Life "Get healthy" and "eat well" are common buzzwords at the start of a new year. Magazine and news articles make it seem as though you need only to eat fruits, vegetables, fiber and omega-3s. But that's not the whole picture. While many well-known foods have cancer-fighting and immune-boosting qualities, there are some tasty additives that elevate mild to magnificent and palatable to unforgettable, and also are very good for us. For some time now, doctors have known that there is a scientific basis for why people have used herbs and spices for more than just seasoning for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Besides being zesty and hot, intense and complex, and even lovely to look at, herbs and spices have proven health benefits. In addition to preventive attributes, they also may be effective in managing, if not curing, chronic disease. When using spices and herbs, a little goes a long way toward receiving their antioxidant benefits. That brings us to using them in recipes. The world of spices and herbs is a big one, and most of us only have an inkling of all the choices available and how to use them. Ethnic cuisines have been using native herbs and spices to prepare both beverages and sweet and savory dishes for millennia. Even though America is a melting pot, we still consider many herbs and spices as exotic. For example, while we are now familiar with herbs like rosemary and use it often in both savory and sweet dishes, most of us consider mint, another versatile ingredient, for use only in sweet dishes. Mediterranean cooks use mint often and deliciously in savory dishes. The use of cloves and cinnamon is common in Indian savory dishes. The list goes on of the myriad of spices and the ways we can use them to punch up flavor and keep us healthy. My recipe for Quinoa and Green Onions puts an international and nutritious spin on your table. You can change the spice combination to make the dish reflect your favorite flavors from around the world. So find an ethnic grocery and explore its spice aisle, and buy a cookbook featuring unique ways to use spices or herb. Make the 2015 the year that you spice up your food ... and your life!

In saucepan, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Add garlic and saute just until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the chicken broth and bring to a boil. Add quinoa and reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the quinoa is tender and most of the broth has been absorbed, about 12 minutes. 3. Stir in the butter and one-half of the sliced scallions; season to taste with salt and pepper. Remove from heat and allow to stand for 3 minutes. 4. Sprinkle with remaining green onions and serve as side dish. Serves 4

HOLLYWOOD -- The confirmation that Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner really is transitioning to become a woman has shocked many people. The upcoming reality show, starring Bruce, will keep the shock value going. Last year, Jarod Leto won his best supporting actor Oscar for playing a transsexual in "Dallas Buyer's Club," which may have swayed Eddie Redmayne, Oscar nominated for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking "The Theory of Everything," to take on a risky project for his post-Oscar film. He first hit with "My Week With Marilyn" (2011), then he impressed in "Les Miserables." Redmayne won a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for "The Theory of Everything" and is the favorite to win an Oscar this year. He's currently on big screens in the $175 million "Jupiter Ascending," playing an effeminate dictator of another planet. He'll next take on the role of Danish painter Einar Wegener, who later transitioned to become Lili Elbe, the first man to have sexual reassignment surgery, in 1931. The film, "The Danish Girl," will be directed by Eddie's "Les Miserables" director, Toby Hooper. Before Redmayne, those considered for the role were Nicole Kidman, Gwenyth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Marion Cotillard and Rachel Weisz. Hooper won the Academy Award for "The King's Speech," which grossed $414 million worldwide. Redmayne admits, "I have put on dresses and wigs and make-up. I'm beginning to embark on trying to find out who she was." This is a time when interests, thanks to Bruce Jenner, are high on men transitioning to women. *** Sad to hear of the passing of Donna Douglas, born Doris Smith, in Pride, Louisiana, 82 years ago, whom we all loved as Elly May Clampett on "The Beverly Hillbillies."

Eddie Redmayne

I attended the CBS affiliate gathering in 1962 and met Donna, who was a beautiful, shy and unassuming young woman who stuck close to her co-stars Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan and Max Baer, Jr. Many years later, I'd see her around Beverly Hills functioning as a real-estate agent. When she succumbed to pancreatic cancer on New Year's Day, Max Baer said, "She was Elly May until the day she died. She always dressed in pink or blue, and of course had those signature pigtails." She is survived by her brother, her son, Danny Bourgeois, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. *** "American Sniper," which cost $58.8 million to make, grossed nearly $400 million in its first three weeks and is still going strong. Despite being ignored by The Golden Globes, it has grabbed Oscar nominations for Bradley Cooper as best actor, and for best picture. Hope Bradley doesn't get sore if he doesn't win the Oscar ... he knows how to use a rifle really well now! (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I think this season of "Portlandia" might be the funniest one yet. Please tell me I'll get to enjoy new episodes for years to come. -- Paula T., via email A: I am happy to tell you that you'll get at least two more seasons of funny from Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein. IFC announced that it has picked up the hit comedy for seasons six and seven, each encompassing 10 half-hour episodes. *** Q: I wanted to ask about two ABC shows that I very much miss: "Red Widow" and "666 Park Avenue." I enjoyed both shows, especially the eye candy in "Red Widow," and wondered if there's any chance they'll be aired again -- Marsha R., Naples, Florida A: Both ABC series premiered in the 2012-13 season -- "666 Park Avenue" in September and "Red Widow" as a midseason replacement -- to much hullabaloo and fanfare; however, both were canceled due to low ratings. Of the two series, "Red Widow" is available on DVD, in case you're feeling nostalgic and want to relive the drama and intrigue ... and eye candy. *** Q: I truly hope the writers and producers of "Galavant" know what a superb show it is. I laugh so hard and watch each episode several times since there are so many jokes and bits every second. I thank them for this wonderful production. If it comes out on DVD, I will buy it! -- Nancy M., Venice, Florida A: I know a lot of people who feel the way you do, Nancy. And they are all hoping for a second season, as I'm sure you are. If anything, it's just nice to have the option to watch a series that is inventive and unique, and there really is no other show out there like it right now. I believe in rewarding people for thinking outside the box, and I hope ABC does too.

Fred Armisen While "Galavant" started out really strong, it then slipped in numbers as the limited series went on. However, since it is a limited series (meaning each season has fewer episodes than a normal series, and it can air at any time during the season as a place-filler or replacement), its low numbers won't necessary be nails in its coffin. I'd still place this show very much on the bubble. We'll keep our fingers crossed! *** Q: I read that Andrew Garfield will no longer star in "Spider-Man." Does that mean the franchise will be ending? -- DeeDee R., via email A: The franchise will go on -- but with a new Spidey. Like Tobey Maguire before him, Andrew is moving on to other things, and a new (not-yet-cast) actor will take his place. The premiere date for the new "Spider-Man" movie has been set for July 28, 2017. Because of this, "Thor: Ragnorak" will now open in November 2017, since Peter Parker and company have taken his release date. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. If the bag is one big, flat cube, you lost power long enough to suspect all your refrigerator items of being spoiled.

The UCLA researchers are back. Their updated research indicates that meditation might slow the loss of gray matter in the brain. While they expected some small amount of effect, they were surprised at the "widespread effect of meditation ... throughout the entire brain."

What does this mean for us? That we should seriously consider meditation as part of our daily routine to possibly hold off age-related brain changes.

Singing as therapy for Parkinson's apparently isn't new. As far back as 2011, Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago has used music and drama for their therapeutic benefits to Parkinson's patients. It has documented benefits in movement, posture, speech and voice, as well as mood and attitude, goal setting and encouraging others. In the drama section, the participants read scripts, which helps memory recall and articulation.

Surprising Boost for Brain Health

A year later, scientists learned that the brains of those who meditate have "gyrification," allowing the brain to process information faster. Additionally it appeared that the more years of meditation, the more gyrification was present.

• "If you get a residue inside your coffee cups when they go through the dishwasher, it might be time to give your machine a once-over. In the meantime, spray the insides of the coffee cups with a bleach-based cleaner like 409 just before your turn it on. That should help." -- E.T. in Michigan

Singing Therapy Helps Parkinson's Patients

Other researchers soon began their own investigations. In 2009, UCLA researchers discovered that certain areas of the brain are larger and have more gray matter in people who meditate. Two years later those same researchers learned that in people who meditate, the connections between areas in the brain are stronger and have less of the brain atrophy that usually comes with age. In this case, the connections weren't just between specific parts of the brain, but in the whole brain. Whether the meditation caused brain growth or stopped the reduction wasn't known at the time.

this fun recipe: Dissolve 4 to 6 tablespoons of Epsom salts in a beer. When the salt is dissolved, dip a clean rag in the mixture and wipe it on your window pane. As it dries, crystals will form, creating a frost effect. This is a great solution for a window you don't want to be clear but also don't want to permanently alter. The effect washes off with soap and water.

Meditation can be learned, and so it's best to start with a bit of instruction. If your senior center doesn't offer classes, go online and research "learn meditation" to help you get started. You also might find ongoing classes in your area, and it's possible that they will be free.

As far back as 2007, researchers were reporting on the benefits of meditation in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease. At the time, they claimed that only 12 minutes a day allowed the brain to heal.

After

Researchers at Iowa State University have been using music as therapy for patients with Parkinson's disease. Patients were first tested on pitch duration, vocal loudness, respiratory pressure and swallow control to set a baseline. Then, once a week for eight weeks, they all gathered together to sing simple songs. The end result? All showed significant improvement. Since Parkinson's is progressive, being able to maintain a function can be important for continued muscle control. Participants were shown to have positive changes in voice, speaking and breathing, and experienced reduced stress and anxiety, improved communication and well-being, and even better memory as they learned new songs. The physical aspects aren't the only areas that benefited. Interaction with others who have Parkinson's has brought the group together socially. Even though the study is officially over, they still meet every week to keep singing ... because they know what it does for them. The program has been so successful that researchers plan to do another study for a 10-week period. They'll test this year's participants to see if there are differences between those who continued to sing and those who didn't.

If you have Parkinson's or know someone who does, investigate singing therapy in your area. If there isn't a program, encourage the local hospital to begin one. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

with a hole punched at the top of each strip (one strip for each child for each chore and privilege). --Markers and ruler Make it in three easy steps:

A Chore Chart That Gets the Jobs Done Most chore charts -- the ones where the days of the week run across the top and the chores are listed down one side -- don't take into account that family days are unpredictable! What if no one's home for dinner because of a basketball game? Does one child get to skip her turn doing dishes? Or does she have to do it the next night, thereby throwing off the whole chart? See what I mean? So here's a new plan that really gets the jobs done -unless you have a gremlin in the house. (I'll explain later.) Discuss with your kids the basic chores that need to be done in your home. Five or six jobs is a good number for starters. You might want to add a category for the most-soughtafter privilege. In our

house each of the kids ALWAYS wants to sit in the front seat of the car.

With a marker, print the chores across the top of the board. Draw vertical lines down the board to separate the categories.

For a sturdy chore board, here's what you need:

Under each chore, attach a hook.

--1 piece of white foam board, cut in an 18-inchwide-by-9-inch-long rectangle --6 adhesive-backed plastic hooks --6 metal rings (available at office stores)

Let your kids each print their name on their own six strips, then have them loop their strips on each ring and hang on each hook.

--Several plain index cards, cut in 1 by 5-inch strips

Explain that the person whose name appears on top of the ring is "up" for the task/privilege in

the category. When she completes the job, she gets to flip her name over so that the next child's name appears. Now it's his turn! As for the gremlins? Well, it can happen that a name is mysteriously missing from one loop (washing dishes) and is subsequently found twice in another (gets to choose any dessert). So suddenly some-

one's saying, "Hey! When's the last time Amelia had sink duty?" Nothing's perfect. Mostly, though, this chore chart works like a charm. Because not only is the method clear and fair, but the kids are involved in the process.

Most of today's standard bathroom sinks use a pop-up sink stopper, controlled by a push-pull rod behind and below the sink. The bottom of the stopper is typically attached to a control rod; this ensures that the stopper pops up far enough to allow a good, steady drain of water, and that it seals tightly when you want to fill the sink. A couple of things can happen to the stopper over time: Hair and soap can get stuck at the bottom of the stopper, where the pivot rod attaches to it, causing a clog or slowdown. Or, the attachment to the pivot rod can break. Even if the stopper still pops up or closes, it may not be doing either very well.

So check your stopper first: grab it from the top with your index finger and thumb and pull gently upward. If it comes out easily, its attachment is likely broken. There's a great step-bystep guide at instructables (http://www. instructables.com/id/Fix-a-Sink-Stopper/) on replacing a pop-up stopper. If the stopper is attached to the pivot rod, you can go ahead and check for a clog at the base. Dive under the sink and locate the pivot rod. This is a round metal rod jutting horizontally into the back of the drain pipe. It's held in place by a nut; loosen this nut and ease out the pivot rod. You may want to have a helper hold onto the stopper from above so that it doesn't fall flush into place, making it hard to get out. Once the rod is pulled back, lift out the stopper. Clean the gunk from the bottom of the stopper; if you see more gunk in the

area around where the pivot rod sits, try fishing out the clog using a wire hanger bent into a hook, or an old bottle brush, or feed a pipe snake to the spot and swirl it a couple of times. Using a helper to position the stopper, move the pivot rod back into place and hand-tighten the nut. Run the water to see if the slow drain problem is fixed, making sure water doesn't leak from the pivot nut. HOME TIP: To de-gunk a slow-flowing drain without drain cleaner, pour a tablespoon of baking soda into the drain followed by two tablespoons of white vingar; let sit for a few minutes, then flush with hot water. Here is one sample from the 50 questions on the survey: "Do you think that a year from now, you and your family will be better off financially, or worse off, or just about the same as now?"

CONSUMERS ARE MORE OPTIMISTIC, BUT ... -The newest consumer sentiment survey is out, and it came in at a whopping 98 (out of 100). One year before that, the number was 81. When it comes to consumer expectations, the number shot up to 91 after reaching only 71 a year ago.

The overall survey results tell us that we consumers think things are better than they've been in a decade. That we'll continue to spend, that more jobs will be created and that unemployment won't go up again. And that we believe these good times will go on for another five years. All is not perfect in our eyes, however. Most of us have only our own paycheck to gauge how the country is faring, and we still need these lower gas prices and various discounts to have extra to spend. We expect that our own purchasing power will increase only 3.3 percent this year. But we're still optimistic.

While optimism is good, so is caution. The official recession was December 2007 to June 2009. It seems so long ago, and for so short a period of time -- just 18 months. Yet the damage was so serious and the recovery so long (the unemployment rate continued to rise even after the "official" period ended) that it should be a message to all of us. Depressions, recessions and periods of prosperity run in cycles, and there's nothing the individual can do to stop it. Taking care of yourself and your family should be your paramount goal in the face of not knowing what is coming when. Here are some ideas: • Spend modestly. Before you buy a bigger house or an expensive vehicle just because you can, determine whether you actually need it.

• Keep your credit-card debt as low as possible, and look for credit cards with zero interest for a long period of time. • Save extra money, whether it comes from a pay raise, paying off a monthly debt or eating dinner at home instead of a restaurant. • Learn a new income-producing skill. Mostly, remember the financial lessons learned, especially if you were unemployed for a period of time and struggled.
