Part Two by Kathy Wolfe Tidbits continues its examination of the history of some famous retailers. • Missouri native James Cash Penney moved to the drier climate of Colorado on his doctor’s advice, as he was susceptible to tuberculosis. In 1898, he found work in a dry goods store called Golden Rule, and proved his worth in a short time. The owners asked Penney to partner with them in opening a new store in Kemmerer, Wyoming, and J.C. Penney opened the store in 1902. He bought out his partners in 1907, and in 1913, changed the chain to the J.C. Penney Company. Just four short years later, there were 175 Penney’s in 22 states. • J.C. Penney lost nearly all his personal wealth in the 1929 stock market crash, but borrowed against his life insurance policies to make payroll until he could recover the company. By 1941, there were 1,600 stores in all 48 states. Penney’s introduced their own credit card in 1959. At their peak in 1973, the company operated 2,053 stores. Today, that number is 1,107. The original “mother store” in Kemmerer is still in operation, and has been declared a National Historic Landmark.

FAMOUS RETAILERS (continued):
• The J.C. Penney Company motto was, “Honor, Confidence, Service, and Cooperation.” • J.C. Penney built Anchorage, Alaska’s first public parking garage in 1968, following the destruction of their store in the 1964 earthquake there. • Nordstrom’s started out as a small shoe store in Seattle, Washington, in 1901. John Nordstrom had emigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1887 at age 16, arriving with $5 in his pocket. Although he didn’t know a single word of English, he managed to work his way to Seattle. In 1897, he headed north to Alaska to search for gold. Two years later, Nordstrom returned to Seattle, $13,000 richer. He partnered up with a shoemaker he had met in the Klondike, and the pair opened Wallin & Nordstrom in 1901, with first day sales of $12.50.
Within four years, annual sales had increased to $80,000. In 1923, they opened a second Seattle store. By 1929, both Wallin and Nordstrom had retired and sold their shares to Nordstrom’s sons. • By 1960, Seattle’s downtown Nordstrom’s shoe store was the largest shoe store in America, and there were eight locations in Washington and Oregon. In 1963, the company branched out into the women’s clothing business. Today, the fourth generation of the Nordstrom family heads up the company. From its humble beginnings of one small shoe store, Nordstrom’s operates 289 stores in 38 U.S. states and one in Canada, with annual sales exceeding $12 billion.
by Maxwell Kohl in 1946. In 1962, his chain was the largest of its kind in the Milwaukee area, and Kohl branched out, opening his first department store in Brookfield, Wisconsin, in 1962. It is now America’s largest department store chain, (having surpassed J.C. Penney in 2012), operating stores in 49 states.
• Kohl’s didn’t start out as a department store. The first Kohl’s was a Wisconsin supermarket, founded
• Aaron Montgomery Ward launched the nation’s first mail order business with a catalog of 163 items in 1872,
Golden Rule Store a forerunner of J.C. Penney of nowadays in Cumberland, Wyoming, circa 1913 a full 16 years before the Sears catalog appeared. By 1904, Ward was mailing a 4-lb. (1.8-kg) catalog to three million customers. He started his business in the loft of a Chicago livery stable, with $1,600 he and two partners had saved. • Sears represented serious competition, and overtook Ward’s sales in 1900 with $10 million in sales compared to Ward’s $8.7 million. Sales had dramatically slipped by the 1960s and 1970s, and in
1985, after 113 years, the catalog division was closed. Today the Montgomery Ward brand is owned by Swiss Colony, Inc. • A Montgomery Ward’s staff copywriter was responsible for the creation of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Each year at Christmas, the chain gave away children’s coloring books to customers. In 1939, they wanted something new, an original Christmas storybook. Copywriter Robert May was asked to come up with a story, and “Rudolph” was the result. Two million copies were given to Ward’s customers that year. It wasn’t until 10 years later that May’s brother-in-law Johnny Marks set the story to music. In 1949, singing cowboy Gene Autry, made it the second most popular Christmas song in history, second only to “White Christmas.” • Barney Pressman opened his first store in Manhattan with $500 he received from pawning his wife’s engagement ring. The Pressman family retained a small percentage of the luxury store
• It should be no surprise that Walmart is the #1 retailer in America. Oklahoma-born Sam Walton went to work at a Des Moines, Iowa J.C. Penney store as a management trainee at age 22, just three days after his college graduation. Earning $75 a month, Walton stayed about 18 months before his World War II military service. After the war, he borrowed $20,000 from his father-inlaw and purchased a Ben Franklin variety store in Newport, Arkansas. By the early 1960s, Walton and his brother owned 15 Ben Franklin stores. In 1962, Walton opened his first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas. Five years later, the family owned 24 stores, with $12.7 million in annual sales. Five years after that, there were 51 stores, with sales of $78 million. In 1980, there were 276 stores, and in 1989, Walmart became the nation’s #1 retailer. Today, the company employs 2.2 million people worldwide, ringing up more than 200 million customers each week in 11,000 stores in 27 countries. • Sebastian Kresge was working as a traveling salesman, peddling to all 19 Woolworth’s stores in the late 1800s. He made the decision to open his own store and invested $8,000 (about $227,000 in today’s dollars) to open a five-and-dime in Memphis, Tennessee. By 1912, there were 85 stores, and by 1924, Kresge was worth about $375,000,000, which translates to nearly $5.2 billion today. In 1962, Kresge opened his first K-Mart store in Garden City, Michigan, a store still in operation today. In 2005, the K-Mart Corporation purchased Sears for $11 billion.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:
JOSEPH BOMBARDIER
from a ruptured appendix. Joseph stepped up his efforts to invent a vehicle that could move over the snow. The result was a snowmobile that was steered by front skis and could carry seven people in its heated cabin. Within two years, he had built and sold 12 of his B7’s (“B” for bombardier, “7” for the number of passengers) to doctors, veterinarians, innkeepers, funeral directors, and schools. • With the success of the B7, Bombardier expanded into military vehicles and he became a major supplier for the World War II effort. After the war, he pushed ahead to improve his inventions, producing a 12-passenger snowmobile, which was an immediate winner with police departments, the timber industry, and mining companies. An 18-passenger model quickly followed, which was used by schools in the snowy climate of Quebec and Ontario.
We owe the invention of the snowmobile to Canadian inventor Joseph-Armand Bombardier. But that was just a small part of this man’s contributions. Here are the facts on the inventor and businessman. • Quebec-born Joseph had an affinity for mechanics from a young age. At 13, he fashioned a mechanical toy locomotive driven by a clock mechanism, and a steam engine created out of old sewing machine parts followed shortly afterward. It was the family’s hope that Joseph would join the priesthood, and in 1921, the 14-year-old was sent to seminary. • When Joseph was 15, his father gave him an irreparable Model T Ford motor, which the boy soon transformed into the power behind an unusual sled, his first snow machine. • Not suited to religious studies, at 17, Joseph began an apprenticeship at a Montreal garage and enrolled in night classes in mechanics and engineering. By 19, he had his own garage, and it seemed he could fix anything. • In the winter of 1934, a days-long blizzard prevented Bombardier from getting his twoyear-old son to the hospital, and the boy died
• Bombardier was soon designing vehicles to undertake different terrains, such as swamps, bogs, and mud. Some had tracks for traction, while others had an interchangeable system of wheels and skis. In 1953, he introduced the all-terrain Muskeg tractor, able to haul skiers up a mountain as well as clear roads. . • Perhaps his best-known triumph came along in 1953. Using a lighter engine, Bombardier created the Ski-Doo snowmobile, a $900 machine for outdoor recreation lovers. Originally slated to be called the Ski-Dog, intended to replace the dogsled, it became the Ski-Doo when a painter misread the name and painted Ski-Doo on the prototype. Mass production of the unit began in 1959, and was immediately embraced not only by recreationists, but hunters, prospectors, surveyors, missionaries, and trappers as well. Bombardier’s company was enjoying annual sales of $3.5 million by the end of the 1950s. • Along with his genius mechanical abilities, Joseph was devoted to community service and had a great love of music, singing in the church choir and accompanying his children on the piano. In the midst of an exceptional career, he died at age 56. Following his death, the family-owned business expanded into locomotives and aircraft, and today Learjet is one of their subsidiaries.

"HEADSTRONG: 52 WOMEN WHO CHANGED SCIENCE — AND THE WORLD" by Rachel Swaby (Broadway Books, $16) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell
Many were forced to work for low pay or even for free, as universities refused to officially employ them. Male research partners dismissed their work or stole credit for their findings. Some faced extra prejudice due to their race, ancestry, religion or social class. But overlooked, pushed aside, even flat-out ignored, these determined women still managed to make strides in their respective fields that remain relevant and influential to this day. The women in "Headstrong" aren't included just because they are smart ladies, but because they achieved things that are amazing for any person, making discoveries and designing inventions that increased the boundaries of human knowledge and accomplishment. Decades, even centuries later, they are still inspiring role models for any gender. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
You've never heard of most of the women in this book, and that is precisely why it exists. You probably didn't know that it was a woman who invented Kevlar, who first mapped the ocean floor, who wrote the first computer program, who uncovered the structure of DNA. Modern science owes much to the contributions of brilliant, tenacious women who went about their work even in the face of outstanding discrimination and disapproval, and in "Headstrong," journalist Rachel Swaby introduces us to 52 of them. Written with insight, clarity and humor, these easily digestible mini-biographies are designed to be easily comprehensible to the non-scientist, outlining in a few pages each the subject's background, the focus and ac-

are several factors to consider when purchasing older board games. Make certain the game is complete and in good condition. Games that were issued to promote hit TV series are always popular with collectors. Consider "The Beverly Hillbillies," "The Man from UNCLE," "Lost in Space" and "The Waltons," all retailing in the $25-$50 range.
BOARD GAMES Q: Although I don't consider myself a collector, I buy occasional board games and puzzles when I find good ones at flea markets or garage sales. I currently have almost 50, including "Pollyanna," "Bomb the Navy," "Car 54," "Get Smart" and a 1930s edition of "Monopoly." How can I find out if any of my games are worth keeping? — Steve, Dayton, Ohio A: Games create a feeling of nostalgia with many collectors, which has, of course, led to an increase in values. For example, your "Car 54" game, issued in 1951, currently is worth about $300, up at least tenfold from just a decade ago. There

In this study, more than 450 seniors with an average age of 84 were tested until death. Those with purpose were 44 percent less likely to have larger areas of damage in the brain. In another study of some 1,000 seniors at the Rush Center, those who scored high on having purpose to their lives were 2.4 times more likely to avoid Alzheimer's and cognitive impairment. It even cut the mortality rate in half.
LIVING WITH A PURPOSE Seniors who have a purpose in life are less likely to develop damage in the areas in the brain that can cause stroke, according to a recent study from the Rush Alzheimer's Disease Center in Chicago. Damage in the same areas also can cause disability, death and dementia.
Here are some ideas to get you thinking about ways you can add purpose to your days. * Check up on others to make sure they're OK. FRANK WINFIELD WOOLWORTH
• In 1919, when there were 1,000 stores, tragedy struck. Frank Woolworth, who had had a lifelong fear of dentists, ignored symptoms of infection, and died from septic poisoning as a result of an abscessed tooth. The company was handed over to his brother Charles, and within 10 years, another 1,250 stores were added. During the mid-1920s, a store was opened every 17 days.
Frank Winfield Woolworth had a brand-new idea back in 1878, the “five-and-dime” store. Here’s the history of his endeavors that made “Woolworth's” a household name. • The Woolworth family were farmers in upstate New York, but farming wasn’t Frank’s career choice. After finishing school, he found work at the local dry goods store, where he came up with a few ideas for a store of his own. • In 1878, when Frank was 26, he borrowed $300 from his boss to open Woolworth’s Great Five Cent Store in Utica, New York. Within months, the store had failed. Refusing to give up, Woolworth tried Lancaster, Pennsylvania, for another store, using the same sign he’d used in Utica. He expanded his inventory to include items up to 10 cents, such as gravy strainers, scoops, purses, biscuit cutters, soap writing books, pie plates, handkerchiefs, and hundreds of other novelties. In 1880, Woolworth’s added manufactured Christmas tree ornaments with resounding success. • Woolworth introduced a novel idea of displaying his merchandise, different from other stores of the period. While other retailers kept their goods behind a counter, requiring customers to present the clerk with a list of desired items, Woolworth used self-service display cases with all prices clearly marked to avoid haggling with customers. • Within just a few years Woolworth was a millionaire. By 1909, he had expanded to England. In 1912, there were close to 600 stores, and the company’s new corporate headquarters in New York City was under construction. In 1913, the Woolworth Building opened its doors, a 60-store skyscraper that was the tallest building in the world at 792 feet (241 m), an honor it held until 1930. It was built at a cost of $13.5 million, paid for by Woolworth in cash out of his private funds. • In 1917, the Woolworth family moved into Winfield Hall, a newly-constructed Italian Renaissance 56-room mansion on 16 acres on Long Island. With walls and pillars of marble, the home cost $90 million in 1917, with its entryway’s grand staircase alone costing $2 million.
• The five-and-dime concept began to disappear in 1932 when a line of 20-cent merchandise was added. In 1935, the company discontinued its 20-cent limit altogether. • Lunch counters were incorporated into many stores, and throughout the 1940s, Woolworth’s was America’s largest restaurant chain. The lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. made history in 1960, when four black students sat down at the segregated counter and were refused service, setting off a series of civil rights’ sit-ins and boycotts. • In the late ‘70s, the company was the world’s largest department store chain. Even as the company acquired other stores chains, its own variety store sales were dwindling. In 1997, the last of the stores closed, and the company was renamed the Venator Group. It now focuses on its most successful retailer, Foot Locker, Inc.

Tasty KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis and Gina Harlow
OH, SWEET PEA
If there is a poster vegetable for spring, one that embodies the fresh avors we are so ready for after a season of roots and leafy greens, it would be the garden pea. This crop loves the still-cool temperatures of the ďŹ rst weeks of the new season, and its plants produce prolific white or lavender blooms that are lovely to look at ... if you are lucky enough to grow them. Those owers give way to showy, brightgreen bulging pods. There are three main types of garden peas. First there is the classic green pea that produces a pod full of plump, round, green peas. This is the part of the plant we eat, discarding the pods, which tend to be tough. These peas are sometimes called English peas. Fresh peas from the ďŹ eld or garden are sweet, creamy and bursting with the fresh taste of the season. For those of us who don't have the opportunity to purchase fresh peas, they can be found in the frozen section of your grocery. The snow pea and the sugar snap pea, which is a cross between the snow pea and the garden pea, are varieties that have the same fresh deliciousness of garden peas. But it's the pods, with their texture and crunch, that are so tasty. When buying fresh green peas, look for ďŹ rm, brightly colored pods. Small pods tend to be the most tender and usually will have a fresher taste. Plan to prepare your garden peas right away,
as the sugars in all varieties begin turning to starch after harvesting. Although they come from the same family, the nutritional values of peas vary. Green garden peas contain high amounts of vitamin A, as well as good amounts of antioxidants. However, because the pod of the snow pea and sugar snap pea are eaten, they provide the nutritional beneďŹ ts of high ďŹ ber and vitamin C that garden peas do not. This recipe for Fresh Pea and Lettuce Salad provides a delicious showcase for various varieties of peas. It's perfect as a stand-alone salad or as a side dish with chicken or ďŹ sh. Simply Wonderful Vegetable Stew Makes 6 to 8 servings This stew has relatively few ingredients, is quick to prepare, and tastes wonderful. Who could ask for more? Serve it with a fresh green salad and bread. • 1/2 cup water • 2 medium onions, chopped • 1 28-ounce can chopped tomatoes, undrained • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 large green bell pepper, seeded and diced • 6 medium red potatoes, cut into 1/2-inch cubes • 1 teaspoon dried basil • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 1 teaspoon mixed Italian seasonings • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) • 1 - 2 cup fresh or frozen green peas Heat water in a large pot. Add onions and cook over medium-high heat, stirring frequently until onions are soft. Add tomatoes and their liquid, garlic, bell pepper, potatoes, basil, oregano, and Italian seasonings and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook 20 to 25 min-
utes, or until potatoes are just tender. Add salt to taste. The amount you add will depend on the tomatoes you use. Some commercially canned tomatoes are very salty; if you use these, you may not need
to add any additional salt. Stir in peas and continue cooking until heated through. Source: Food for Life by Neal Barnard, M.D.; recipe by Jennifer Raymond, M.S., R.D.

HOLLYWOOD — Bradley Cooper is in talks to direct "A Star is Born," which starred Janet Gaynor (1937), Judy Garland (1954) and Barbra Streisand (1976) in three earlier versions. Clint Eastwood was to direct this one, but he got impatient waiting for Beyonce and directed "Jersey Boys" instead. "Jersey Boys" cost $40 million to make and earned a disappointing $67.3 million ... maybe he should have waited for Beyonce! Many are puzzled why Cooper is switching to directing when he's got a hot acting career. There's no word if he would act in it as well, or if Beyonce will star as the ambitious singer who rides on the back of a fading star to get to stardom herself. Next up for Bradley is "Aloha," with Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray and John Krasinski, out May 29. *** The first Oscar buzz of the year is for Sally Field, whose film "Hello, My Name Is Doris" won the audience award at the recent SXSW film fest in Austin, Texas. The comedy-drama features Sally as an older woman in her 60s, having a romance with a much younger co-worker played by "New Girl" star Max Greenfield. It also stars Beth Behrs of "2 Broke Girls," Tyne Daly and Peter Gallagher. Formerly "Gidget" (1965-66) and "The Flying Nun" (1967-70), Field won an Emmy in 1977 for "Sybil," in 2001 for a guest shot on "ER" and in 2007 for "Brothers and Sisters," and Oscars in 1980 for "Norma Rae" and in 1985 for "Places in the Heart."
Bradley Cooper
*** Leonardo DiCaprio, who was paid $25 million for "The Wolf of Wall Street," is a member of the $20 million club of actors in that price range. Joining him are Robert Downey, Jr., Sandra Bullock, Angelina Jole, Denzel Washington and Matt Damon, followed by the $15 million club with Bradley Cooper, Ben Affleck, Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Melissa McCarthy. "50 Shades of Grey" cost $40 million to make and raked in $558.5 million in theaters. The DVD will be released May 8, and you can expect that to break records too. *** One of the reasons Sean Penn and Charlize Theron are inseparable is because Penn is directing Theron in "The Last Face" with Javier Bardem and Jean Reno. They have his and her movies coming out: Penn has "Hot Pursuit" with Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara, set for May 8; the following week will bring Theron in the new "Mad Max" film with Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult and Elvis Presley's granddaughter Riley Keough. Sean better watch his back ... we hear Charlize can be a "Monster" if she puts her mind to it, and she won an Oscar to prove it! (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Q: I recently rewatched "Napoleon Dynamite," and it made me wonder what Haylie Duff has been up to lately. Can you fill me in? — Valerie D., via email A: The soon-to-be new mom's Cooking Channel show, "Real Girl's Kitchen," starts its second season on Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. I spoke with the multitalented actress/ singer/hostess/cook recently, and she can't wait for viewers to join in the fun of her series' new season. For those unfamiliar with the show, here's how Haylie describes it: "It really just is about a real girl in the kitchen — it's me, learning how to cook, and sharing recipes that I love, and cooking for my family and my friends. The format is very loose, and every episode is different. We get out of the kitchen a lot. A fun way to share your love of food with someone is to get out there in the field, so to speak, and going to farms and farmers' markets. We describe our style of food as 'healthy decadence.' It's a balance of healthy food and indulgent things as well."
Haylie Duff
A: Craig is all set to reprise his role of Coach Hayden Fox on the NBC revival of "Coach." NBC gave the show a 13-episode straight-to-series order, with Craig returning as Coach Fox, where the now-retired football coach is called back to become the assistant coach to his own grown son, who is now the new head coach at an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania that is starting up a new team. There is no word yet on its premiere date or other casting info, but Barry Kemp — who created the original ABC series — is on board to write and executive-produce the reboot. ***
What can we expect for season two? "I had a surprise birthday for my mom," Haylie reveals. "I love to mess with my mom. And she hates to be on the show, but she's so funny, I force her. She's a riot. Everybody loves Mama Duff. There are a lot of my friends on the show and my family. We do a great Italian episode. My fiance is Italian, and he's always giving me a hard time, saying Texas girls can't make Italian food. So I set out to prove him wrong. It's just real loose and fun."

Q: I am so upset that "Parenthood" is over. Can you tell me what series star Craig T. Nelson will do next? — Paul Y., Indianapolis
A: The Liev Schreiber-starring drama returns to Showtime for its 12-episode third season July 12 at 9 p.m. ET/ PT. This season's guest stars include Ian McShane, Katie Holmes and Elliott Gould. "Masters of Sex" returns for its third season as well, which also happens to be 12 episodes, immediately following "Ray Donovan."

HELP FOR SPINAL STENOSIS PAIN DEAR DR. ROACH: I enjoyed your informative article on spinal stenosis. I also have acute and chronic pain in my lower back. I am 75 years of age and have had vertebroplasty on seven vertebrae. I realize that my back will not be normal again. I am currently working with a doctor who uses osteopathic manipulation. He is suggesting prolotherapy in conjunction with the manipulation. I have tried the prolotherapy previously
without any relief of pain. What is your assessment of prolotherapy therapy, or would you advise me to go to a pain clinic? The pain level in the lower back usually is about 6 or higher on pain scale of 1 to 10. I walk 3 miles every day in a grocery store using a small grocery cart. I am trying other exercises, even working on a balance ball. But it just does not seem to improve. I would greatly
ANSWER: Prolotherapy is the injection of an irritant solution into a space, designed to stimulate healing and reduce pain. However, if it hasn't worked for you in the past, it is unlikely to work for you again. On the other hand, some studies have shown prolotherapy to be modestly effective when combined with spinal manipulation. A pain clinic has several modalities available, including steroid injections and pain medications. Unfortunately, steroid injections have been shown to be ineffective in back pain that is due to spinal stenosis lasting beyond six weeks. It sounds like you are doing what you can with exercise. I think continuing with the manipulation and prolotherapy as a trial of six weeks or so is reasonable, and at that point you can continue if
it begins helping. If not, you can try a pain specialist, as there are effective non-narcotic medications that may be of help, in combination with your continued exercise. However, I think that an experienced physical therapist may be able to guide your exercises more effectively. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband drinks tonic water with quinine every day because he was told that it will help alleviate his leg cramps. He drinks as much as 1 1/2 quarts a day. Is that much safe? If not, what is a safe amount? — D.V. ANSWER: Many people have found that quinine relieves leg cramps. However, the Food and Drug Administration banned sales of quinine for leg cramps due to unproven effectiveness and the possibility of side effects. Quinine in large doses can cause abnormal heart rhythms, blood problems

The bacterial environment of the digestive tract may contribute to obesity and diabetes, according to a review article in the publication On the Cutting Edge, by the Diabetes Care and Education practice group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Continuous exposure to low-grade antibiotics in the food system, longterm antibiotic use, or poor dietary choices may cause dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut bacteria. This imbalance can lead to increases in both the number of calories the gut takes from food and inflammation, which increases risk of insulin resistance and leads to changes in metabolism that contribute to fat cell growth. Adopting a plant-based diet is one way to decrease exposure to antibiotics and help balance gut bacteria. A whole-foods, plant-based diet is also highly effective for the prevention, treatment, and management of diabetes, according to another review article in the same publication. While common advice for diabetic patients includes counting carbohydrates and cutting calories, both observational and interventional studies support the effectiveness of a plant-based diet to reduce insulin resistance, lower blood pressure, shed excess weight, and improve blood sugar control, despite a higher carbohydrate load. These results are consistent with previous research on plant-based diets and diabetes. To learn more about diabetes health, visit: http://pcrm.org/diabetes.
and even organ failure. However, the amount of quinine in tonic water is quite small, compared with quinine tablets. One common brand has 17mg in a liter, so your husband is getting about 25mg. The quinine tablets formerly prescribed for leg cramps were 200mg. Toxic effects are unlikely at the dose in quinine water. Some people are allergic to quinine, in which case even the small dose in tonic water could potentially cause problems.

ANSWER: Even the best surgery can leave some prostate tissue in place. It's also possible that some tumor cells spread before surgery. Any residual cancer can be stimulated, in theory, by taking testosterone. Fortunately, the available evidence so far suggests that this risk may be much lower than feared. Careful follow-up remains essential.
DEAR DR. ROACH: You had an article from a man that said he had his prostate removed and was wondering about taking testosterone. You said he would likely have an increased risk of prostate cancer recurrence.

rate with chefs to improve food taste and quality, according to a study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. For seven months, researchers followed trends in food choices of students in 14 elementary and middle schools among three different intervention groups that involved either strategic placement of foods to promote healthful choices (for example, placing fruits and vegetables before the entree), involvement of a professional chef in the food preparation process, or a combination of both. All interventions were compared to each other and a group that received no intervention. Results showed that chefs’ improvements in food taste and quality led to a long-term increase in fruit and vegetable selection and consumption, while strategic placement of food resulted in only short-term increase. While after three months, there was not a noticeable increase in fruit and vegetable consumption by the chef group, by seven months the improvement was significant. A focus on school food quality and palatability with repeated exposure is an effective method to increase fruit and vegetable consumption in the school setting. Elevated Blood Pressure Linked to Increased Protein Intake High protein consumption may increase blood pressure, according to a new study published in The Journal of the American College of Nutrition. Researchers evaluated the diets of 121 patients with type 2 diabetes. Participants were divided into two groups according to blood pressure – uncontrolled (≥ 135/85 mm Hg) or controlled (≤ 135/85 mm Hg). According to a three-day diet analysis, the group with uncontrolled blood pressure consumed more protein and meat than the group with controlled blood pressure. The controlled blood pressure group also consumed a diet higher in carbohydrates. These findings follow previous studies that show the benefits of plant-based diets on blood pressure.

DOG MIGHT NOT NEED CATARACT SURGERY —-DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My 13-year-old miniature poodle, "Dany," has the beginnings of cataracts. I don't want to put her through surgery. Are there drops or vitamins I can use instead? — Mick, via email DEAR MICK: You'll need to consult Dany's veterinarian. However, if the vet will only consider surgery, you can get a second opinion.
The most important thing is to make sure Dany stays healthy. Senior-dog illnesses, especially diabetes, can affect her eyes and increase the risk of cataracts. So keep up with scheduled checkups, and make sure she eats a proper diet. If she's on medication, make sure she takes it. Nutritional supplements that contain antioxidants reputedly help slow cataract development, and in fact, at least one eye-speciďŹ c supplement, Ocu-Glo, is available by prescription from the vet. Avoid using supplements developed for humans, as other ingredients in them may not be good for dogs. Also, be wary of products that claim to reverse cataracts: Only surgery can get rid of them.

getting tangled up in the pull cords. Older window blinds manufactured before 1991 may not have this feature.
4. Adjust the disc until it is about 2 inches below the blinds' head rail and tighten the knot. Repeat with the other cords.
The blinds' manufacturer should include instructions for cord safety. If you can't locate them, you can find general information at websites like the Window Covering Safety Council at windowcoverings.org.
5. The bottom of each cord shouldn't hang past the bottom window sash when the blinds are closed. Shorten them by cutting each cord above the plastic tassel to a safer length, then re-threading the tassel onto the cord and securing with a knot tied on the end.
Look on the pull cords of your window blinds for cord stops. These are small round plastic discs threaded through the cords. Here's how to use them to make the pull cords safer, from the WCSC (www.windowcoverings.org/how-to-retrofit/): 1. Lower the blind to its proper closed length and tug the cords slightly to the right to lock them in position. 2. To install a new cord stop, pinch together a section of the pull cord (near the top of the cord) and slide the plastic disc over the pinched-together cord so that you create a loop threaded through the disc
If you have young children or adventurous pets, consider replacing the blinds with safer cordless models as soon as possible.
Threading a cord stop through the pull cord, with the cord end looped through. (Bottom) Installed cord stops. 3. Keeping the loop large for now, bring the bottom part of the same pull cord through the loop and then tug it into a loose halfknot under the disc.
TIP: A quick add to your advice on calibrating digital thermostats: Check the batteries. If they're worn out, the thermostat behaves erratically. — Denis in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Send your home tips and questions to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

WHEN YOU CAN'T PAY YOUR TAXES If you don't have the money to pay the taxes you owe, there are a few different ways you can clear your debt with the IRS. First things ďŹ rst, however: If you didn't ďŹ le a tax return because you don't have the money to pay what you owe, you'll need to call the IRS immediately, before your error is compounded. Call 1-800-829-1040 and ask to set up a payment plan. That will at least get you to the right department where the agents are mostly interested in helping you ďŹ gure out a way to pay. Admit that you haven't ďŹ led because you don't have the money, and that you need to set up a payment plan.
Do you owe more than $10,000 to the IRS RU KDYH XQĂ€OHG WD[ UHWXUQV" The most common mistake made by taxpayers is engaging the IRS or State on your own. If you owe EDFN WD[HV RU KDYH XQĆ“OHG WD[ UHWXUQV WR WKH ,56 RU 6WDWH FDOO 8OWLPDWH 7D[ 'HIHQGHUV QRZ WR UHFHLYH D FRQĆ“GHQWLDO FRQVXOWDWLRQ $OORZ RXU WHDP RI WD[ DWWRUQH\V DQG WD[ VSHFLDOLVWV WR SURWHFW \RX DQG QHJRWLDWH \RXU DEVROXWH EHVW UHVROXWLRQ Our services: 5 5 5 5 5 5 5 5

If you ďŹ led but didn't send any money, your next step depends on how much time you need.
In the Midwest, those ďŹ gures are $218 and $515, for a total of $733.
If you need only a short period of time, say a few weeks, wait until the IRS sends you a bill in about a month, after they've processed all the other returns. Even if you can't pay the whole thing at once, pay what you can and call them for an extension. There will be penalties and fees for being late, and they will continue to accrue the longer you wait.
In the Northeast, promposal will average $431, with prom costing $738, for a total of $1,169.
If you need an extension of up to 120 days, there is no fee involved, but the penalties will continue to add up. Depending on what you owe, you might qualify for an installment agreement. You can call or send in Form 9465, the Installment Agreement Request. Your best bet is to call and talk to one of the agents, who will help you determine what you can realistically pay each month. There are multiple options: direct debit from your bank account, payroll deduction, mailing a monthly check and others. There is a $120 fee for setting up an installment agreement with a mailed check or payroll deduction, and that's due upfront. If you allow a direct debit from your bank account, the fee is $52.
Out West, they're looking at $342 and $596, for a total of $937. Most disturbing, however, is the incomes of families handing over these amounts. In a family with an income under $50,000, cost of prom and promposal will average $1,109. Under $25,000, and the family will spend an extreme $1,393. But those making over $50,000 will spend only $799. With parents expecting to pay 73 percent of the costs, teens don't have much incentive to cut expenses. The free Plan'it Prom app helps students and parents make and stick to a budget for the prom (or any other event) by tracking spending as they shop. Look for it on iTunes, Google Play store or www.practicalmoneyskills.com/prom. The app has timeline, budget and cost-cutting tips. It's worth considering. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

TEENS "PROMPOSALS" DON'T COME CHEAP Not long ago, a high-school kid would ask his favorite girl to the prom. She'd say yes, then the expensive parts would start ... limo, dinner, owers, tickets, tux or dress, pictures, after-party. Now the simple act of inviting has risen to the level of a marriage proposal, complete with all the hoopla and expense. Visa's annual survey says that just asking someone to the prom will average $324 this year, approximately one-third of the $919 total cost. A Google search for "promposals" reveals 447,000 results. On Twitter, @ThePromposal has over 24,000 followers, many of whom have attached a photo or video showing how they did it. Sometimes the request is written inside the lid of a pizza box. Others are as simple as a cake with "Prom?" in the icing. More expensive proposals include rented restaurant signs, highway billboards, even Jumbotrons. Spending on a promposal and the prom isn't equal across the country. In the South, promposals will average $305, with the prom itself costing $544, totaling $937.
