FAMOUS LAST WORDS • Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti was enjoying a wildly successful career when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2006. One year later, Pavarotti proclaimed his final words, “I believe that a life lived for music is an existence spent wonderfully, and this is what I have dedicated my life to,” and went to sing with the angels.

• Frenchman Nostradamus was an apothecary who published several collections of prophecies, which have rarely been out of print since his death. Followers of Nostradamus credit him with predicting many major world events. There was one event he predicted very accurately – his death. On July 1, 1566, he told his assistant, “Tomorrow at sunrise, I shall no longer be here.” Indeed, it was true. • In 1960, James W. Rodgers stood before a Utah firing squad awaiting his execution for the 1957 murder of a miner. His answer to the usual question, “Any last requests?” was, “Bring me a bullet-proof vest.” Rodgers …turn the page for more

FAMOUS LAST WORDS (continued):
was the last person to die by the firing squad in the U.S. for the next 17 years. • Once a grammarian, always a grammarian! The famous French grammar expert Dominique Bouhours lay on his death bed and spoke, “I am about to – or I am going to – die: either expression is correct.” • And speaking of all things proper, as Marie Antoinette, Queen of France, was being escorted to the guillotine to be executed for treason in 1793, she accidentally stepped on the foot of her executioner. This very polite lady expressed the apology, “Monsieur, I beg your pardon.” • After being diagnosed with cancer, legendary movie critic Roger Ebert
wrote to the faithful readers of his blog that he would be taking leave for his treatment. The final words of his farewell were, fittingly, “I’ll see you at the movies.” • Who knows what Apple Computers co-founder Steve Jobs saw when he passed from this life to the next? His sister Patty reports that at the moment that pancreatic cancer claimed the life of this creative genius, he looked over her shoulder and proclaimed, “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” • One of the greatest basketball players of all time, Pete Maravich, had a magnificent ten-year career with the NBA. A severe knee injury forced him to retire in 1980. In 1988, while playing a pickup basketball game in the

gym at a Pasadena, California, church, “Pistol Pete” collapsed and died at age 40, less than one minute after saying, “I feel great.” An autopsy revealed that he had been born without a left coronary artery, necessary for supplying blood to the heart’s muscle fibers. The right coronary artery had been compensating for the heart defect his entire life without his knowledge and it finally gave out. • Many famous men had kind words for their beloved before they passed into the Great Beyond. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who penned the stories of Sherlock Holmes, died in his garden with his wife at his side. After suffering a massive heart attack, he looked at her and said, “You are wonderful.” The last words of actor John Wayne, dying of stomach cancer, directed toward his wife were, “Of course I know who you are. You’re my girl. I love you.” Legendary coach Vince Lombardi died just three days after his 30th wedding anniversary, and the last words whispered to his
wife Marie were, “Happy anniversary. I love you.” • There’s a difference of opinion on the last words of actor Humphrey Bogart. Some sources hold to the belief that he spoke, “Goodbye, Kid. Hurry back,” to wife Lauren Bacall as she left his bedside in the hospital to go pick up their children. When she returned, he was comatose and never regained consciousness. Others claim his final remark was, “I should never have switched from Scotch to Martinis.” • Baseball great Joe DiMaggio wasn’t with the one he loved when he passed on in 1999. Although married to actress Marilyn Monroe for just nine months in 1954, he carried a torch for her for the remainder of his life. After her death in 1962, Joe had roses sent to her grave twice a week for 20 years. His final words were, “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.” • Showman Flo Ziegfeld brought musical revues, Broadway productions, and films to the world of
entertainment, including his legendary Ziegfeld Follies, which ran from 1907 to the early 1930s. Ever the theatrical producer, his last words from his deathbed were, “Curtain! Fast music! Lights! Ready for the last finale! Great! The show looks good, the show looks good!” • What was on the minds of U.S. Presidents as they prepared to face the Great Beyond? First President George Washington seemed fulfilled with his life, if his last words in 1799 are any evidence: “It is well, I die hard, but I am not afraid to go.” Grover Cleveland remains the only U.S. President to serve two non-consecutive terms as the 22nd and the 24th chief executive. Wellknown for his honesty, integrity, and fight against political corruption, it seems fitting that his last words, while in the throes of a gastro-intestinal disease, would be, “I have tried so hard to do right.” Franklin D. Roosevelt stated, “I have a terrific headache,” just moments before he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in 1945.
• Presidents Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy had no idea that their last words would in fact be their last. As Lincoln and his wife sat in Ford’s Theater watching the play “Our American Cousin,” Mary Todd Lincoln, worried about the opinions of the women seated next to them in their theater box, whispered to her husband, “What will Miss Harris think of my hanging on to you so?” Abe’s last words before being shot by John Wilkes Booth were, “She won’t think anything about it.” As Kennedy rode in a Dallas motorcade in 1963, the wife of Governor John Connelly commented to him, “You certainly cannot say that the people of Dallas haven’t given you a nice welcome, Mr. President.” His answer of, “No, you certainly can’t,” were his final words before his assassination by Lee Harvey Oswald. • Ever the poet, Emily Dickinson, author of more than 1,800 poems, pronounced her last words in 1886, “I must go in, for the fog is rising.”

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:
GEORGE EASTMAN Folks have been taking pictures with a Kodak camera since 1888. Follow along and learn about its inventor George Eastman and his contributions to the photography industry. • Born in central New York State in 1854, George Eastman had a difficult childhood, with his father passing away when George was eight. His sister contracted polio when he was a teen. George’s mother took in boarders for the family’s financial survival, and at age 14, George quit school to go to work, first as an errand boy at an insurance company, and later as a junior clerk at the Rochester Savings Bank. • At age 23, an invitation from a friend changed Eastman’s life forever. He was invited on a vacation to Santo Domingo, and bought photographic equipment to document the trip. He found the gear to be enormous, heavy, and very expensive. Eastman never took the trip, but was inspired to research the invention of improved methods of taking pictures. • For three years, Eastman experimented in his mother’s kitchen, seeking an easier way to develop negatives. He developed gelatin emulsions that led to his patent of a dry-plate coating machine. He founded the Eastman Dry Plate Company when he was 30. Continued experiments led to a patent of rollable film to replace glass negatives. • Eastman introduced the Kodak camera in 1888, inventing the name that would be familiar for decades to come. He explained the name, “The letter ‘K’ had been a favorite with me. It seems a strong, incisive sort of letter.” He tried several combinations of letters, wanting a word that started and ended with “K”.
• The first Kodak camera cost $25 and came with 100 exposures. The user would send the camera into Kodak for the film to be developed. The advertising slogan was, “You press the button, we do the rest.” • The following year the company developed a type of flexible film that helped establish the motion picture industry and Eastman’s success continued to surge. • The Eastman Kodak Company was founded in 1892, bringing convenient, easy-to-use cameras to the common man. In 1900, Eastman introduced the first Brownie camera, intended for children and priced at $1, with film selling for 15 cents a roll. • In 1902, Eastman began building a mansion in Rochester, New York, a 35,000-square-foot, 50-room house with the latest in heating and electricity, telephones, and an elevator. It took three years and $335,000 to complete. Today, the home is the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, and is a National Historic Landmark. • Upon his retirement, Eastman embarked on African safaris, bringing home a white rhinoceros and an elephant, which he displayed in his home. In his early 70s, Eastman was diagnosed with a crippling spinal disease. After enduring excruciating pain for over four years, in 1932, Eastman took his own life. His last words, penned in a suicide note were, “To my friends: My work is done. Why wait?” • A generous philanthropist, Eastman donated more than $100 million to education and the arts, public parks, hospitals, and dental clinics (about $2 billion in today’s dollars). He supported the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with $20 million, as well as establishing the Eastman School of Music. Having never married, he willed his entire estate to the University of Rochester.

In 1960, John Steinbeck set out on a road trip with Charley, his poodle, to discover America. The result was "Travels with Charley," a bestseller based on the experience. During the autumn of 2013, Andrew Knapp, a freelance interface designer and photographer from Ontario, Canada, loaded his border collie, Momo, into a 1977 Volkswagen Westfalia camper van and began a 15,000-mile trip across America. Knapp's plans were much like Steinbeck's iconic trip more than half a century earlier, but with a twist. In Knapp's previous book, "Find Momo," the canine played hide-and-seek throughout its pages and does likewise in this delightful new book.
The month of travel covered a great deal of the United States, but it was after a terrible rainstorm that Knapp and Momo discovered the American Southwest. Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and the Pacific Northwest were regions that truly captured what he called his sunny heart. Momo, who has more than 340,000 Instagram fans, was a good traveling companion. Knapp claims that the opportunity to explore and live out of the van was a rewarding experience on several levels. For example, during the journey, he learned as much as possible about both the people and places visited. The images in this book are fascinating. From a diner in New England to the White House in Washington, D.C., Knapp's photography captures the diversity of our country. The fun is finding Momo in the more than 100 images. It's not as easy as you might think. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
2. "Ride Captain Ride," in 1970. Blood, Sweat & Tears covered it five years later. 3. Boston. The song also references lovers, thieves, locked doors and The Strangler. 4. Burl Ives, in 1962. The song climbed all the charts: singles, country, pop and contemporary adult.

5. "Time of the Season," by The Zombies in 1968. The song is often used as being representative of the late '60s. Toyota used it in advertising campaigns for the Tilda in Japan, Greece and Russia, and more recently for the RAV4 in Russia. It also saw use in television shows "South Park," "NCIS" and "Will and Grace."
2. What was Blues Image's most successful song? (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc. 3. The Standells' "Dirty Water" was about what city? 4. Which singer netted a Grammy for "Funny Way of Laughin'"? 5. Name the song that contains this lyric: "What's your name? Who's your daddy? (He rich) Is he rich like me. Has he taken, any time. (To show) To show you what you need to live."
Answers 1. Legend says they took the name after being stuck in traffic behind a Wonder Bread truck.

Minnesota. The end result: The life expectancy of the nearly 800 participants rose, simply by making a few changes in their lifestyle and diet. Check aarp.org for more information about the AARP/Blue Zones Vitality Project. Search for The Minnesota Miracle or Creating America's Healthiest Hometown.
LIVING TO BE 100 California, Costa Rica, Greece, Italy and Japan all have something in common. They all have a city with large numbers of people who reach age 100. Only 25 percent of our longevity comes from DNA, says National Geographic author Dan Buettner in his book "Blue Zones." The rest comes from our environment and lifestyle. With teams of researchers, Buettner traveled the world and discovered the secrets to longevity. There's no one magic bullet from all of these locations, but lifestyle, spirituality and community combine with a few habits these centenarians follow. Moderate activity, semi-vegetarian diet, a clear purpose and staying socially engaged are common traits among the people who routinely live to be 100. In 2009, AARP joined with the Blue Zones project to add years to the lives of people in Albert Lea,
Buettner's books are worth reading. "Blue Zones" (subtitled "9 Lessons for Living Longer") also is available on Amazon.com or BlueZones.com. Be sure to look for the updated second edition released in 2012. A new addition is "The Blue Zones Solution," which includes information on diets (and the science behind them), recipes, superfoods, community, family and the routines and personal stories of those in Buettner's research. No matter how old we are, it's never too late to be inspired to reach maximum health.

I found a set of three Wagner skillets -- a 10 inch, 8 inch and 6 inch-- on eBay for $35. Most of the ones I have seen in shops and at antiques malls sell in the $25 to $50 range, depending on size and condition. As to the ones you have, you might begin with shops and dealers in your area.
CAST-IRON COOKWARE Q: I have a Wagner 1891 6-inch iron skillet and a 10-inch Wagner griddle. I would like to know how much they are worth and where I can sell them. -- Brenda, Daytona Beach, Florida A: The Wagner Manufacturing Company was founded in Sydney, Ohio, in 1891. It was family owned until the mid-1950s. The company was acquired by Griswold and eventually liquidated in 2000. The skillets, cooking pots and griddles made by Wagner are popular with collectors, but aren't all that valuable.

*** Q: I purchased a figurine called "Bath Time" made by Lladro. I paid $300 for it and was told that Lladro pieces have become quite collectible. -- Liz, Homestead, Florida A: Before making a purchase, always do your homework. Case in point is your figurine. Yes, it was made by Lladro in 1997, but is not considered rare. I found it in "Collecting Lladro: Identification & Price Guide" by Peggy Whiteneck and published by Krause Books. Whiteneck places the value of your figurine at $195. *** Q: I have 26 volumes of Reader's Digest condensed books. Are they worth keeping? I am downsizing this summer. -- Ethel, Memphis, Tennessee
health, socioeconomics and exercise. The participants (ages 65 to 94) had one serious illness, were enrolled in both Medicaid and Medicare, and had physical limitations that kept them from at least one daily task, such as bathing, handling medications or dressing. What the researchers didn’t expect was that doing housework and maintaining their own property had more of an impact on seniors than, for example, neighborhood poverty. They were able to prove what they’d seen: Seniors who lived in a neat and tidy environment were more satisfied than those whose environment was chaotic. I saw something similar when I helped a frail neighbor clean out her pantry. While roomy, the pantry was a jumble of items stacked on top of one another amid outdated, expired food. It was difficult to even write a grocery list because it was impossible to tell at a glance what she had. Once the pantry was neat and organized, she was delighted, and when I saw her again, she had started on the magazines and newspapers that were piled high on every flat surface, managing to take small armloads to the recycling bin outside her back door. She was quite proud of her accomplishment. The lesson here: With a small amount of effort, we can keep our environment neat (and safer) ... and the exercise is good for us. DEAR DR. ROACH: Don't forget that although there are many medical causes of restless leg syndrome, varicose veins also can be a source of symptoms, and we have cured many people of symptoms with minimally invasive varicose vein treatments. We always recommend that if you have visible varicosities or strong family history of varicose veins, you should get an ultrasound to determine if you have venous insufficiency. The treatments have essentially no down time and can mean one less medication for many people. In addition, just because

A high-fat diet may change how your body processes nutrients, according to a study published in Obesity. Researchers at Virginia Tech put 12 college-aged men on either a standard diet or a diet high in saturated fat for five days. Muscle biopsies were used to asses changes in insulin sensitivity. Those who consumed the high-fat diet experienced an almost three-fold increase in endotoxins one hour after their meal and lost some ability to metabolize glucose. Our muscles' ability to metabolize glucose is central to metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and diabetes. This study builds on research which has linked
fat inside muscle cells and high-fat diets to insulin resistance, which over time can lead to type 2 diabetes.
Eat Your Greens to Protect Your Brain A study done by researchers at Rush University in Chicago, presented at the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) Annual Meeting, found that two portions of leafy greens per day can significantly help protect brain health and reduce the risk of dementia. The researchers followed the diets and cognitive abilities of more than 950 older adults with an average age of 81 from the Memory and Aging Project for between two and 10 years. Multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease are both associated with RLS, and Parkinson's is important because when medicines such as levodopa/carbidopa (Sinemet) wear off, it can mimic RLS symptoms. When dopa drugs are used long-term for RLS, symptoms can get worse, a condition called augmentation. Pregnant women are more likely to have RLS. Many drugs, especially antidepressants, can cause RLS. I had a reader tell me that hers was due to Benadryl she was taking for sleep. Magnesium deficiency is common in RLS, and several readers told me magnesium supplements stopped their symptoms. Obesity Increases Prostate Cancer Risk Obesity may increase risk for prostate cancer, according to a study published in JAMA Oncology. Researchers monitored cancer incidence rates from 3,398 African-American men and 22,673 non-Hispanic white men as part of the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) for almost six years. African-American men with a higher BMI had up to four times the risk for prostate cancer, compared with thinner men. While the exact mechanism behind obesity and prostate cancer development remains unknown, the study authors emphasize obesity’s link to inflamma-

ROACH: I was a smoker for 65 years, and I got tired of my doctor and everyone else telling me the dangers of smoking. I tried e-cigarettes about two months ago, and I am hooked on them. At first I didn't like the taste, but now I have gotten used to it. There is a large amount of "smoke" from them, and it is darkening my teeth. What's your take on this new fad? -- S.G. ANSWER: There is no doubt that tobacco has caused vast amounts of suffering and death. The jury is out on the net effect of e-cigarettes, but here are my thoughts. Although e-cigarettes are likely to be much less dangerous than regular ciga-
tion, insulin resistance, and the development of prostate-specific antigens. Breaking Medical News is a service of the Physicians
rettes, there is no doubt in my mind that they are at least potentially harmful to health. On the good side, if they help you quit your smoking habit, they may have a benefit to you. You should use them to help you quit smoking, then ideally quit using them as well. However, there is a bad side, and that is when nonsmokers start using them. Some users don't think of them as cigarettes at all, calling them "hookah pens," "vape pens" or other euphemisms. They are simply devices to provide nicotine and flavorings. You used the term "hooked on them," and they probably do have the potential for addiction. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Years ago, I was told that eating raw carrots and fresh spinach improves vision. If this is true, why am I afflicted with macular degeneration after having eaten these for a long time? I also have taken vitamins to preserve vision for 10 years. Do these have justification? -- Anon.
Committee for Responsible Medicine 5100 Wisconsin Ave. Ste. 400 Washington, DC 20016
ANSWER: Fresh vegetables with beta carotene and certain multivitamins and minerals have been shown to slow the effect of age-related macular degeneration. It may be that you would have gotten macular degeneration both sooner and more severely had you not had a healthy diet and taken vitamins. Unfortunately, we don't know of any preventive treatment -- nor any treatment once the disease has been diagnosed -- that is 100 percent effective. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. CINCO DE MAYO Since Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, occurs this week, Tidbits takes the opportunity to look into the history of this event. • In the United States, many mistakenly believe that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. Not so! That event is commemorated on September 16, marking the anniversary of Mexico’s call to arms against the Spanish colonial government in 1810. Cinco de Mayo is actually the celebration of the Mexican army’s victory of over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In Mexico, the holiday is called El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla, which translates into English as “The Day of the Battle of Puebla.” • In 1861, after undergoing both the Mexican-American War and a civil war within their boundaries, the Mexican treasuries were nearly empty and the national

economy was in ruins. The country was deeply in debt to France, Great Britain, and Spain, but was forced to default on its loans. President Benito Juarez declared that all payments on foreign debts would be suspended for a period of two years, and promised that payments would resume after that time. The three European countries sent armed forces to Mexico to demand payment. Negotiations were successful with Britain and Spain and those two countries withdrew their armies, but France, under the rule of Napoleon III, opted to attempt to expand its empire and install its own leader. • A well-outfitted and provisioned French force of over 6,500 soldiers began its march toward Mexico City. President Juarez rounded up a force of 4,000 loyal but illequipped Mexican men and sent them to the forts of Loreto and Guadalupe near Puebla. Many of them were not soldiers at all, but rather agricultural workers, armed with machetes and outdated rifles. • Early on the morning of May 5, French General Charles de Lorencez led his attack, supported by heavy artillery, on the Mexican forces. Mexican General Ignacio Zarago-
za commanded the counter-attack and after a day-long battle, Mexico emerged the victor, having defeated the French army that was considered the “premier army in the world.” Although vastly outnumbered, the Mexicans suffered less than 100 casualties, while the French had five times that many. • This was just one battle in the war against French occupation (which did not end for another six years), but the victory at Puebla was a great boost to the morale of the patriotic resistance movement. Napoleon III responded to the defeat by sending 30,000 more troops to Mexico, eventually taking over Mexico City and appointing Maximilian as the ruler of Mexico. His rule lasted but three years until 1867. The U.S. began providing military assistance to Mexico, France withdrew, and Maximilian was eventually executed. • Today, Cinco de Mayo is just a minor holiday in Mexico, primarily observed only in the state of Puebla. It is much more of a celebration in the United States, where it is seen as an observance of Mexican heritage. The largest festivals in America are held in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston.

HOLLYWOOD -- "The Wizard of Oz" has inspired a weekly series called "Emerald City," and NBC has given the show a 10-episode guarantee. "Emerald City" will follow 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and her K-9 police dog, who are transported by a tornado to a far-away world -- a mystical land of competing kingdoms, deadly warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. In this darker spin on "Oz," wicked witches don't stay dead for long, and a young girl becomes a warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands. Sounds more like "Star Wars" than the "Wizard of Oz" ... we'll have to wait and see. Vanessa Hudgens *** Speaking of wizards, David Henrie, star of Disney's "Wizards of Waverly Place," hit the big screen in 2013 in "Grown-Ups 2" with Adam Sandler and Kevin James. He can now be seen in "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" and "The Little Boy," both of which opened recently. Coincidently, he co-stars with Kevin James in all three films. Come Aug. 3, Henrie will be seen in "Walt Before Mickey," about Walt Disney's early years, and he's just completed playing Ronald Reagan, from his childhood to the Oval Office, in "Reagan," with Jon Voight. Shelly Desai -- so recognizable to people from his roles in "Arrested Development," "Men of a Certain Age" and "Here Comes the Boom" -- nearly missed "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" at its New York premiere because he was signing autographs for a swarm of fans, who acted like he was Tom Cruise at a premiere. Security had to whisk him away so they could start the film, in which he stars. *** Two classic Leslie Caron MGM films have been transferred to Broadway. "Gigi," which won nine Academy Awards in 1959, has "High School Musi-
cal" star Vanessa Hudgens in the title role. The New York Times reviewer complained that the production "has been scrubbed of anything even remotely naughty or distasteful." Gigi is now 18, and not 15, Gaston, her millionaire admirer, has been reduced severely in age, making the scandal of their relationship non-existent. Why tamper with a formula that worked so well and earned so many awards? The way our society has evolved, they should have made it MORE scandalous. The second film, "An American in Paris," in which Caron starred opposite Gene Kelly, won six Oscars in 1951. The New York Times critic said, "It is very much a traditional Broadway musical, and while its two radiant leading performers, Robert Fairchild and Leanne Cope, are ballet dancers, they also sing quite well and deliver dialogue more than quite well." Both shows take place in Paris ... that's a lot of French pastry kicking up their heels! (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Tia Mowry
Q: I love "Instant Mom" star Tia Mowry. When will that show be back, and in what else can I see her? -- Janet F., Hartford, Connecticut A: Tia's comedy series, "Instant Mom," which airs on Nickmom, will finish out its second season this summer, and the cast and crew are hard at work on the third season. You also can catch Tia in her brand-new show on the Cooking Channel, "Tia Mowry at Home," which airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET. The show centers on Tia's home life with her friends and family -- and of course, cooking. Tia told me about the show recently: "The cool thing is that it's not just about cooking or me just telling people how to cook. What I'm really excited about is that you will get to see my family and my friends. And one person, in particular, is my dad. My dad is so reserved and so private, but he loves to cook. So, when I asked him to be on my cooking show, he was like: 'Oh wow! I want to be a part of it.' There's one episode where my dad comes over and we cook an amazing meal together. "Another episode has me doing some yoga, and I make a great post-workout meal for my friends. And then another episode we have a cool mommy day with my friends who are moms. I cook for them, and then I surprise the kids with a game of basketball with Metta World Peace. One of my favorite episodes is where I plan a dinner date with my husband, and we re-create memories from our wedding day." *** Q: I can't get enough "Downton Abbey"! Can you please give me some scoops on the show? -- Jessie F., via email A: I also can't get enough of this wonderful BBC/PBS period drama, but after season six, it will have to be enough. Se-
ries creator Julian Fellowes and executive producer Gareth Neame recently announced that the next season will be its last. Said Neame: "We wanted to close the doors of 'Downton Abbey' when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together. We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up." *** Q: I was so happy when Netflix brought back "Arrested Development." Will there be more new episodes? -- Jack F., via email A: While series producer Brian Grazer hasn't made an "official" announcement, he did tell Bill Simmons, when he appeared on the latter's "B.S. Report" podcast, that they are making a fifth season of the cult-hit comedy series. Grazer let slip: "I love 'Arrested Development,' but it was never a huge thing. But people are loyal to it. We're going to do another 17 episodes." Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. The practice of making oil from the seeds also is ancient and appears to have begun soon after cultivation began. The same is true for the leaves, which are eaten fresh or brined, and a version of stuffed grape leaves not only is integral to Greek cuisine, but found in the foods of almost every Middle Eastern country. The fruit itself is a good source of vitamins A and C, and antioxidants. The leaves are especially high in vitamin A and minerals, while the oil or extract from the seeds also contain antioxidants that may be helpful in lowering cholesterol and fighting heart disease. Keep grapes in the coldest part of the refrigerator wrapped in a perforated plastic bag to allow excess moisture to escape. Unfortunately, grapes won't ripen after they've been picked.
Fruit of the Vine If you were to make a checklist of all the wonderful qualities one fruit could possess -- sweet, tart, tasty raw or cooked, fresh or dried, with delicious juice, various flavors, edible leaves and nutritious oil -- the grape and its vine would check every box. It must be for that reason that no other fruit, no matter how glamorous its reputation, is grown and produced as much as the grape. The cultivation of grapes dates back to the beginning of civilization on the Asian and European continents. In North America, when the Europeans arrived, they found almost countless varieties of wild grapes, many found nowhere else in the world. Most of those wild grapes were considered inedible by the early colonists, although they were an elemental food of the Native Americans. Soon, however, the wild American grapes became hybridized with European varieties, and grapes became more widely consumed. One of the notable varieties is the super-delicious Concord grape. The grapevine has a presence around the globe, and the fruit and the plant are used in a wide variety of ways. From the
When it comes to cooking with grapes, most people think of jams or pies, but even sweet grapes add an interesting dimension of flavor to savory dishes, and the more bitter grapes, such as some of the wild varieties like the Texas Muscadine, take on a sweetness when sauteed or roasted. If you've never tried grape leaves, you are missing a tangy treat. They are the perfect receptacle for a wide variety of stuffings.

Yes, there are people who lay in wait for the "big story" that will make their career, and there are times when the "news" tramples over peoples lives and leaves only smoldering remains as the news crews move on to the next story. Most of the time, however, the complaints you hear about "the media" are from people who are just frustrated that they can't control or manipulate the media. Reporters did not go to school to learn, say, the engineering that goes into the building of a dam. But they are trained to ask questions about it, and with experience they know when they're not getting straight answers. Sometimes reporters are asked if they can go "off the record." This a gentleman's agreement. Since most reporters will go to jail rather than give up a source, this is taken very serious. Other times the reporter gets a wagging index finger attached to a red-faced person saying, "Don't go putting this in your paper now!" which, of course, signals to the reporter that he or she will have a story for the paper. And then there's professional sports. Grown men, making millions of dollars playing little boys' games. Putting the players aside for a moment -- much has been written over the years about events like Reggie Jackson

A few weeks ago, soon-to-be-fired Cincinnati Reds manager Bryan Price launched into a tirade for the ages, joining the pantheon of epic breakdowns by coaches who couldn't handle the mean ol' media asking questions and stuff. Barring an epic run to the World Series, which would seem unlikely given Price's temperment, he can count on his 77 f-bomb tirade to reporters to be cherished for the ages, up there alongside the famous rants of Dennis Green, Jim Mora, Bobby Knight, Hal McRae and Mike Gundy. Big-time sports do bring a lot of big-time pressure, so I'm not entirely making light of the situation here. When you're getting paid millions, or in the case of a manager, hundreds of thousands of dollars, to participate in the league, you want to keep the money train rolling because the window of opportunity closes quick. But the question Price couldn't handle wasn't about the plight of the homeless or about Russian missile sites in Cuba ... no, the crisis that Price couldn't get right was about a catcher going on the disabled list that was reported by, you know, a baseball reporter. Well, maybe Price will turn it around and he'll get counseling or something. No matter how many games he wins, you have to figure that the Reds can't have that sort of hair-trigger leadership in place for long. In the meantime, we can always remember the age-old adage: He who loses their cool first loses. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

This popular pastime was known as "monster spotting." * Those who study such things say that the smallest vertebrate in the world is a type of carp: The Paedocypris progenetica grows to be less than half an inch long. *** Thought for the Day: "A husband is what is left of the lover after the nerve has been extracted." -- Helen Rowland * You may be surprised to learn that most Greek and Roman statuary and architecture weren't originally the pristine white we see today. Archaeologists have found evidence that these structures and sculptures were brightly painted in ancient times; the paint has just worn off in the intervening centuries.
* Most muppeteers are right-handed and use their dominant hand to operate their puppets' heads; therefore, most muppets are left-handed. * If you have kids between the ages of 9 and 11, you might be interested to learn that nearly half of respondents in a survey believe that is the appropriate age for kids to begin helping vacuum the house. In the early 20th century, airing homes was considered a crucial health component, as it was believed that fresh air would reduce the incidence of flu and other serious illnesses. Modern research has found some validity in this: The exchange of air keeps mold from growing, while a change in temperature can make it tougher for bacteria to live on surfaces around the house. Letting in sunlight also can make it tougher for molds and bacteria to survive.
A: Well, yeah ... opening windows is the main component of airing out a house, but there are a number of reasons why older folks (and many younger ones) see it as an essential step in keeping a house healthy.

* Even if it's chilly, windy or cloudy outside, as long as it's not pouring down rain, you can open the windows for about an hour to allow a fresh exchange of air.
Most of all, though, airing does get rid of the stale smell your grandmother noticed, and makes your apartment an overall nicer place to live. Here are a few tips on getting the most out of airing:
TIP: If allergies are keeping you from throwing open the windows on warm days, talk to an air-quality consultant (or an HVAC contractor) about the best way to keep the indoor air fresh -- such as changing air filters frequently.
* Get rid of piles: Boxes, clothes, papers and so on, particularly on windowsills and beside beds and furniture, collect dust and impede airflow. * Open the windows on first waking up: This is a habit I noticed while visiting
•Marble Cleaning •Pet Odor Removal •Chair Cleaning
* Or, air your apartment once a week while you're cleaning: Winter and summer, open all the windows and doors, dust and vacuum thoroughly, and change or air bedding (turn down the bed covers for a couple of hours, and shake out the comforter).
Airing Out the Indoors Q: My grandmother constantly tells me my apartment is “stale” and that I need to air it out at least once a week. I have no idea what she's talking about ... opening windows, I guess? -- Kaylie, via email

ARE YOU READY FOR HAIL? May is the month when the highest number of hailstorms occur, and your chances of having property damage rises considerably. The good news is that hail damage is generally included in your homeowner policy as an Act of God, as are tornadoes and hurricanes. That means an insurance company can't sin-

age to skylights might not initially be obvious if it's the gaskets that are cracked.
Damage from hail can be anywhere it touches: your car, roof, windows, shingles, outdoor HVAC units and siding. Even your trees can suffer from hail damage. (Some hail can hit speeds as high as 120 mph, according to stormdamagecenter.org.)
Damage to your trees and landscaping might not be obvious if the root systems are injured and if water then saturates the roots.
There are steps you can take to ensure that all your losses are covered by your insurance company. Take pictures in advance, lots of them, ideally digital, and store those either in a bank box or by emailing them to yourself. Do an inventory as well and keep the list in a safe place. The biggest problem with hail damage is being able to identify it. Broken windows and the windshield in your vehicle will be obvious. Shingles on your roof can take the brunt of the damage, and you might not even know it if your roof isn't inspected by an expert after especially bad storms. Damaged shingles can leak, causing even more problems when water gets down into your home. The dam-
Stir Up Homemade Finger Paint Remember catching baby's first smile and cheering when your toddler took that first wobbly step? Life's "firsts" are celebrations we don't want to miss. Keep an eye on everyday moments, too, when young children experience the excitement of the world around them for the first time. Like dipping toes in the bubbly ocean surf, petting a soft puppy or swishing colorful finger paint on paper with their hands instead of a paintbrush. If your preschooler's creative spirit is blossoming this spring, stir up this time-tested recipe for homemade finger paint and let them enjoy a new sensory, artful experience. It's easy to make and use indoors on a rainy day, or enjoy finger painting outdoors at a picnic table when a friend comes over to play. Then listen for their squeals of delight as they discover a new sensation and create. HOMEMADE FINGER PAINT • • • • •

chasing a roll of freezer paper at the grocery store. 1. Let your child measure and stir the cornstarch and sugar together in a saucepan. An adult should add and stir the water into the mixture over medium heat. Continue stirring constantly until it is smooth and just begins to thicken, about 4-5 minutes. Remove from heat immediately, as it will continue to thicken as it cools. (Note: If you cook it too long, it will turn into an unusable gelatinous goop.) 2. Divide the smooth mixture into several sections of a muffin tin or small bowls. Add food coloring and a drop of detergent to each portion. Stir with a spoon until blended. Experiment with different color combinations, if you wish.
3. To use: On a newspaper-covered work surface, set out the paints and a sheet of the finger-painting paper or freezer paper, shiny side up. Dip fingers and hands into the paint and make designs on the paper. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Remember: If you wait too long to get an inspection and to file a claim, you won't be able to tie it to the hailstorm and your claim might be denied. Don't make the repairs yourself, as this might void your policy. When it comes to setting your insurance deductible, find a balance between what you can afford to pay on a monthly basis versus what you'll be forced to pay as a deductible should you have a claim. The higher the deductible, the lower the monthly premium. Check stormdamagecenter.org for more information. Must see: how to avoid contractor scams. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Be strict with both dogs. Don't yell at them or cajole them -- aggressive behavior means separation into different rooms. There are no treats or rewards for refusing to obey your commands. You have to be the lawgiver in the household; they must know to behave when you're in the room. If Daisy Mae acts up, she gets time out in a separate room. If she refuses to obey your commands around Pepper, she goes to a separate room. If she's aggressive, the muzzle goes on. Don't stand between them. At the ďŹ rst hint of aggression from either, remove Daisy Mae from the room.
Here, Kitty Kitty Show These Terriers Who's the Boss DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We have two Cairn terriers: Pepper is 13 years old; Daisy Mae is 3. She has a tendency to attack Pepper whenever Pepper growls at her. This morning it happened six times, and I usually get the worst of it when I try to intervene. We've had to muzzle Daisy Mae around Pepper. Is there anything we can do? -- Patsy in Brookings, Ore. DEAR PATSY: What you have to do is be the boss. Younger Daisy Mae is jealous of Pepper, who probably gets more attention. Pepper growls to let Daisy Mae know who's boss; Daisy Mae gets aggressive. Fairness and sharing aren't concepts you can teach these dogs. Pepper is the older dog. Daisy Mae is the younger, and she does not have a say.
This is going to be a tough haul. Daisy Mae has been exhibiting this behavior for years now. I recommend consulting a professional trainer. DEAR PAW'S CORNER: How did cats get the nickname "Kitty?" -- Evelyn in Orlando DEAR EVELYN: Good question! It seems like everyone summons their cat using "Here, kitty kitty," or calls their cat "Kitty" when they're not addressing it by name. So where did this common name come from? It likely stems from "kitten," the name for a young cat. This English word dates back to the Middle Ages and describes the offspring of domesticated cats and some smaller wildcats. (Offspring of lions, for example, are called "cubs.")
There are other names for cats, of course. There's the scientific term for housecats, "felis catus" (which sounds a lot like a Harry Potter incantation). There's the general term for all cats, "felines," which includes big cats like tigers and lions, as well as wildcats and lynx and so on. And then there's the other common name for housecats, which is "pussycats." Fully grown male cats that haven't been neutered are called "toms," and fully grown female cats who haven't been spayed are known as "queens." (And they know it, too!) So, why do we often call full-grown cats "kitty"? I think it's because we humans tend to see even grown domestic housecats as cute, small animals -- even though adult cats can be stone-cold killers of small birds, lizards and other creatures outdoors (which is another good reason to keep your cat indoors). What's interesting is how most domesticated cats will respond to a call of "Here, kitty kitty." That's likely because the phrase is so frequently used in Western countries, that most cats have heard it many times throughout their lives.
