Summer is just around the corner, and Tidbits is taking the opportunity to bring you up to date on a few of June’s facts and historical events. • June is most likely named after the mythological Roman goddess Juno, the wife of Jupiter. Juno was the goddess of marriage, which explains why it is considered good luck to get married in June.

• The solstice occurs between June 20 and 22. In the northern hemisphere, it’s the summer solstice, while to those living in the southern hemisphere, it’s the winter solstice. At this time, the Earth is at a point in its orbit that the North Pole is leaning most toward the sun, as far north as the sun ever gets during the year. Everywhere north of the equator experiences days longer than 12 hours at the June solstice, while locations south of the equator have days shorter than 12 hours. • The first Corvette rolled off the assembly line in Flint, Michigan, on June 30, 1953. • Indianapolis, Indiana, was home to the final concert performed by Elvis Presley, an event held at Market Square Arena on June 26, 1977. His last song sung to a live audience was “Can’t Help Falling in Love with You.” Less than two months later, Elvis died in his Memphis, Tennessee, home. • On June 2, 2004, software engineer Ken Jennings made his first appearance on the popular game show Jeopardy, beginning a record-setting winning streak. By the time he was defeated, he had won

74 consecutive games, racking up winnings of $2,520,700. The program’s ratings were 22% higher during Jennings’ string of wins over the previous year. Jennings didn’t stop with Jeopardy, but went on to appear on Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?, Grand Slam, Stump the Master, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. In addition, he appeared on Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions, which brought his total Jeopardy winnings to $3,196,300. Jennings has writing four books, including Brainiac: Adventures in the Curious, Competitive, Compulsive World of Trivia Buffs. • Every June, Belmont, New York, is home to the Belmont Stakes, a 1.5 mile (2.4-km) horse race that is the third leg of the American Triple Crown. • Stephen Carlton Clark was a Cooperstown, New York, hotel owner who was looking for a way to increase tourism to a town badly hurt by the Great Depression. He came up the idea of a baseball museum to house baseball-related artifacts and exhibits, and to honor the game’s exceptional players. The Baseball Hall of Fame opened in June of 1939, and five of the game’s greats were elected to the Hall – Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, and Walter Johnson. Twenty more were selected after the initial five,

and were inducted at the Grand Opening. In order to be considered for election, a player must have 10 years of major league experience, and have been retired five years. To date, 310 have been elected, with four more slated to be formally inducted in July, 2015. • In June of 1994, the eyes of millions of Americans were glued to their television sets, watching a white Ford Bronco being chased across Los Angeles. Inside the vehicle was former football hero O.J. Simpson, who was under suspicion for killing his wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. Twenty police cars joined the chase, along with 20 helicopters, mostly from the news media. Simpson finally surrendered to police in his driveway and headed for trial the following year. Although the jury reached a verdict of not guilty in just four hours, in 1997, Simpson was found liable for punitive and compensatory damages of $40 million in a civil trial filed by the victims’ families. Simpson remained free until 2008,

There have been 11 horses that have won the coveted crown since 1919, including 1973’s winner, Secretariat, the horse that holds the record for fastest time. There hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since 1978, when jockey Steve Cauthen rode Affirmed to victory.

when he was found guilty of 12 charges related to his breaking into a Las Vegas hotel room to steal a number of his sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison. • The Flying Wallenda Family have been performing various daredevil stunts since 1922. Nik Wallenda, a seventh-generation member of the group made history on June 15, 2012 when he became the first to successfully walk on a tightrope over Niagara Falls from the United States into Canada, crossing at the river’s widest point. Although the family is well-known for performing feats without a safety net, Nik was required by ABC television to wear a safety hardness for this stunt, the first time in his life he was required to do so. Just one year later, in June of 2013, Nik was making history once again as he became the first aerialist to walk over the Little Colorado River Gorge in the Grand Canyon. Walking on a wire just 2 inches (5 cm) thick, Nik crossed the 1,400-foot (427-m) dis-

tance, 1,500 feet (457 m) above the river, this time without a harness or safety net. Having made his professional tightrope walking debut at age 13, this daredevil now holds nine Guinness World Records for his many aerobatic stunts. • June 18, 1983 marked the first day that an American woman went into space. Flying on the space shuttle Challenger, 32-year-old astronaut Sally Ride spent six days on NASA’s seventh shuttle mission. Ride joined NASA in 1978 after achieving a bachelor’s degree in physics, another bachelor’s in English, a Master’s of Science, and a doctorate in Physics. She made history again in 1984 when she became the first American woman to travel to space a second time, another Challenger mission which lasted nine days. However, Ride wasn’t the first woman in space. That honor goes to Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, who also made her historic trip in June. In 1963, she spent almost three days aboard Vostok 6 orbiting Earth 48 times.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

TWO JUNE INVENTORS Two famous inventions can trace their history to the month of June. Let’s examine their inventors and how these items came into use. • Christopher Sholes was a printer and newspaperman by trade, editor of the Wisconsin Enquirer in Green Bay during the 1840s. He was also involved in politics as a state senator and assemblyman, and served as a Milwaukee postmaster and a commissioner of public works. • In 1866, Sholes and a fellow printer, Samuel Soule, patented a paging and numbering device that automatically numbered the pages of a book. When they showed this invention to another local amateur inventor, Carlos Glidden, Glidden wondered if the machine couldn’t be adapted to produce words and letters in addition to the numbers. Although another inventor had come up with a typewriter around that time, it was very difficult and complicated to use. Sholes, Soule, and Glidden were granted a patent for their “type-writer” in 1868, and this invention was the first typewriter to become commercially successful. • The team continued to make improvements to their machine, with Sholes developing the common keyboard layout still in use today, the QWERTY keyboard. He ordered the letters in this manner so that typists would experience less typewriter jams. Sholes also developed the shift key for upper case letters, his final improvement before he sold the copyright to the Remington Arms Company for $12,000. • In June of 1890, the U.S. Census Bureau started using an automatic tabulating machine to count census returns. It was the brainstorm of a young engi-

neer named Herman Hollerith whose inventions were the foundation of our modern information processing. • Ten years prior, as a recent college graduate, Hollerith had worked as a statistician on the 1880 census, and realized the need for a better way to tabulate data than hand-counting. He worked on his idea for the next seven years, the same amount of time it took to manually count the 1880 census. • Hollerith used the idea of punch cards that would count based on the location of the holes on each card. After several trials with paper tape, he switched to 3” x 7” (7.6 x 17.8 cm) cards, with each card holding all of one person’s data, and designed a tabulator and sorter to register the results. • Hollerith’s design was so successful that he won a contract from the Census Bureau for the 1890 census. His invention reduced the time required for the count to two years and saved the taxpayers $5 million. It was adopted by Russia, Austria, Canada, France, and Norway for their censuses as well. The 1900 U.S. Census was also counted with Hollerith’s tabulator. His continued improvements added an automatic card-feed mechanism and the first key punch. • In 1906, Hollerith created a model that included a wiring panel that enabled the machine to perform several different jobs with one machine. His 1890 tabulator was wired to work only on 1890 census cards. • In 1911, at age 51, Hollerith sold his Tabulating Machine Company for $2,312,000. His company later evolved into the International Business Machines Corporation, better known as IBM.

On the islands, status depends on the solidity of the ground beneath your feet. The oldest and richest families live on the high hills amid the fertile farmland, while the lower classes cling to the muddy slopes of the reclaimed soil just above the tideline. And then there are the damplings, who live on the sea itself and pride themselves on never setting foot on solid ground. North is one of the latter. Born on a circus ship, she has spent her life as a entertainer, traveling among the far-flung islands performing for damplings and landlockers alike. The bizarre characters of the troupe are the closest thing the orphaned girl has to a family, although none is closer to her heart than the bear with whom she performs every night.

But this way of life is soon to come to an end. It's long been expected that North would marry the son of the ringmaster and leave the circus boats for a house on the land -- a future that holds no interest for her, but one she feels she cannot escape. Then a violent storm leads North to Callanish, and destiny appears to have a different idea. Callanish is a gracekeeper, sentinel of the watery equatorial graveyards. She lives alone on a tiny, isolated island, having chosen self-exile as punishment for a long-ago mistake. Their meeting sets a spark alight as the two souls recognize in each other a kindred spirit. And it's that connection that will give each woman the hope and the courage she needs to take control of her own fate. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

1. Which group had a No. 1 hit with "Indian Reservation"? 2. Who wrote and released the song "Creeque Alley"? Where is it located? 3. Name the performer responsible for "Dizzy." 4. Which band released "The Glamourous Life"? 5. Name the disco song that contains this lyric: "There's been so many things that held us down. But now it looks like things are finally comin' around."

Answers 1. Paul Revere & The Raiders, in 1971. The song was first recorded in 1959 by Marvin Rainwater under the title "The Pale Faced Indian." It refers to the removal of five Indian tribes in five states in the 1830s. 2. Creeque Alley (also spelled Creque or Crequi) was a club in the Virgin Islands visited by The Mamas & the Papas. They wrote the song in 1967. 3. Tommy Roe, in 1969. The song changes key 11 times. 4. Jetboy, in 1983.

5. "Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now," by McFadden & Whitehead in 1979. They wrote the disco hit with the intention of performing it, but owners of their record company tried to insist they give the song to a more established artist and that M&W hang back as house songwriters instead. They refused. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

ADOPTION: Adoring Doctor, Devoted, Financially Secure Family, Music, Theater, Sports, Travel, Education awaits 1st baby. HOLLYWOOD -- Is it time for 52-year-old Tom Cruise to stop making action films? His latest, "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," with Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Alec Baldwin, will be released July 31, followed by the upcoming "Jack Reacher 2." The original "Jack Reacher" (2012), cost $60 million and grossed $218 million. "Oblivion" (2013), which cost $120 million and grossed $286 million, was followed by "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014), at a cost $178 million and a gross of $369 million. But when you consider that "Jerry Maguire" (1996), cost only $50 million and grossed $273 million, and earned Cruise a best-actor Oscar nomination, you wonder why he stopped making that kind of film. He also received Oscar nominations for "Born on the Fourth of July" (1990) and "Magnolia" (as supporting actor in 2000). He won Golden Globes for all three films. Action films are like dessert, not a main meal. *** "The Rock," aka Dwayne Johnson, has parlayed a wrestling career into a red-hot movie career. His "San Andreas," with Carla Gugino, is now playing; the action comedy "Central Intelligence," with Kevin Hart and Ed Helms, opens June 2016; and the Disney animated film "Moana" is set for November 2016. In 2013, "Empire State," with Liam Hemsworth and Emma Roberts, disappointedly went directly to DVD at a cost of $11 million with only $3,682,418 in sales. But "The Rock" recovered with four other films released that year. "Snitch" with Susan Sarandon, took in $58 million; "G.I. Joe Retaliation," with Bruce Willis (cost $130 million/gross $376 million); "Pain and Gain," with Mark Wahlberg top billed, cost $160 million and grossed $789 million; and "Hercules," which cost $100 million and grossed $243 million ("The Legend of Hercules," with Kellan Lutz, which

came out first, cost $70 million and grossed only $61 million). The $160 million "Fast and Furious 6" earned $789 million, and was followed by "Furious 7," which has grossed $1.5 billion, making it the fourth top-grossing film of all time. Talk about reinventing yourself! *** Two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda, riding high in the 13 episode Netflix series "Grace and Frankie," with Lili Tomlin, hits big screens again in the Italian made "Youth," which screened May 20 at Cannes, with Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel and Rachel Weisz, and will be followed by "Father and Daughters," with Russell Crowe, Aaron Paul and Amanda Seyfried.

Bradley Cooper

Q: My sister told me that Bradley Cooper is going to star in a network TV show, but I told her that can't be true, because he has a huge movie career. -- Bobby S., Fresno, California A: That's mostly true. CBS has picked up the drama series "Limitless," which is a continuation of the hit 2001 movie that starred Bradley in the lead role of Eddie Mora. Bradley does appear in the pilot episode, reprising his movie role, and will recur throughout the season as his schedule permits. This is a new show I definitely plan to keep an eye on.

A: You'd think that with the likes of Kal Penn, Candice Bergen and Patton Oswalt also involved, the show would be a shoo-in for a second-season pickup. The renewal gods are a strange lot, and it sometimes just comes down to timing. Perhaps if "Battle Creek" had premiered in the summer on a network like TNT or FX -- networks that are known for nurturing and taking time with their new shows -- it would have had more of a chance.

*** Q: Nooo! I read that Fox canceled "The Mindy Project." Please tell me this isn't true. -- Nina D., via email

*** READERS: Here are the Fox shows that have been renewed and canceled, starting with the renewed shows: "Bob's Burgers," "Bones," "Brooklyn Nine-Nine," "Empire," "Family Guy,"

A: It's true, however, it isn't the end for "Mindy." Hulu announce in mid-May that it has ordered a 26-episode season four of the critically acclaimed series, to air exclusively on hulu.com. A premiere date for the fourth season has yet to be announced. Following the premiere, Hulu will have the option to order subsequent seasons. "I am thrilled that 'The Mindy Project' has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show. It's such an exciting place to be," said series star and creator, Mindy Kaling. *** Q: I have never written to a reporter in my 77 years on Earth. I simply enjoy your column each and every Sunday in our local Florida paper. I felt compelled to write you because my new favorite guilty pleasure is "Battle Creek," which I hear is already canceled. Every character had a unique role, and the way Russ (played by Dean Winters) and Milt (Josh Duhamel) interact is hilarious. Thank you for reading this. -- Rosemarie C., via email

"Gotham," "Hell's Kitchen," "MasterChef," "MasterChef Junior," "New Girl," "The Last Man on Earth," "The Simpsons," "Sleepy Hollow," "So You Think You Can Dance" and "World's Funniest Fails." TV shows that have either ended their run or been canceled include: "American Idol" (after season 15, which begins January 2016), "Backstrom," "The Following" (although it is being shopped elsewhere), "Gang Related," "Glee," "Gracepoint," "Kitchen Nightmares," "The Mindy Project" (see Hulu announcement above), "Mulaney," "Red Band Society," "Utopia" and "Weird Loners." Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Please Support Our Advertisers I do make an exception for fruits, as the body processes natural sugars from fruit differently. You can try this out at home by eating four medium-size oranges or drinking its equivalent in an 8-ounce (250 ml) glass of orange juice. I think you will find a big difference in how full you feel. Although reducing sugar is critical for diabetics and is very important for anyone trying to lose weight, even for people with no sugar or weight problems, the evidence is accumulating that eating too much added sugar increases future risk for heart disease and diabetes.

LIMITING SUGAR IS NO-BRAINER DEAR DR. ROACH: Medical advice is to reduce sugar consumption. Does this apply to 100 percent fruit juices, fresh fruit, sweetened cereal products or other fruit-sweetened products? -- R.B. ANSWER: I think it makes sense to limit sugar intake, as most North Americans take in remarkably large quantities of sugar. This week, while giving a lecture at the medical school, I noticed that the carbonated sodas served contained 45 grams of added sugar per can. That's more than the American Heart Association recommends in a day (no more than 25 grams of added sugar per day for women, 40 grams a day for men)! Be careful of products that claim to be sweetened by fruit juice or fruit sugar; this still counts as added sugar.

Diabetes has become epidemic in North America. The booklet on it provides insight on its diagnosis and treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 402, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have statin myopathy. I am in pure agony. I am taking muscle relaxants and pain relievers. The muscles all over my body ache. I have had pain for two months. Do you have any advice or remedies? -- B.A. ANSWER: Statin drugs are used to reduce risk for people with an increased chance for heart attack, depending on cholesterol levels, blood pressure, family history and other risk factors for coronary heart disease. As many as 9 percent of people treated with statins have muscle aches, which can be severe.

pencil adhesive-backed shelf paper, gift wrap or leftover wallpaper to coordinate with room decor. spray adhesive or double-sided tape, if not using adhesive-backed paper.

Here's the fun: 1. Neatly cut off the top flaps of the box.

BEAT CLUTTER WITH CEREALBOX STORAGE Are your school kids' end-of-the-year folders, projects and favorite magazines "tucked away" in a heap? Here's a way to bring order to keepables that are drowning in piles. The loose items can be sorted and stored in recycled cereal boxes that your preteen and teenage kids have converted into handy bookshelf storage containers. So, before you toss this morning's breakfast-cereal box into the recycle bin, upcycle it into one of these attractive clutter busters. You'll need: • • •

14-ounce empty cereal box with lining removed (or larger, depending on the size of items to be stored) scissors ruler

2. Measure and use a pencil to draw a diagonal line across the front of the box from the top left corner to a point 4 inches up from the base. Repeat on back side, drawing the line from the top right side to a point 4 inches from the base. 3. Draw a horizontal line across the side panel to connect the two diagonal lines. 4. Cut out the top portion of the box, using the lines as a guide. 5. To decorate, use the box as a pattern for marking and cutting out paper. Attach it with tape if not using adhesive-backed paper. Or, an adult should use the spray adhesive according to manufacturer's instructions. Alternate idea: Instead of decorating the outside of the box with paper, turn the box inside out to expose the plain cardboard on the outside for a natural look. After cutting the box into a storage container as described above, carefully pull the box apart on the long side and the bottom flaps, where it was glued together by the manufacturer. Turn the cardboard inside out. Reglue along the same seams to reconstruct the box. When dry, insert four to five brads lengthwise through the long side seam to strengthen the container and add style.

Extra storage container idea: For pencils, pens, markers, scissors and a ruler, remove the label on a clean, empty aluminum can with lid removed. Use the label as a pattern, or measure the can to determine the size of decorative paper. Attach paper with glue or double-sided tape if not using adhesive backed paper. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Until now, 30 minutes a day (or 150 minutes a week) of moderate exercise has been the gold standard. It was shown to reduce the average risk of death by 30 percent. However, new research has shown that the recommended level of exercise didn't consider the needs and health of seniors -- more than 60 percent of whom weren't up to doing that much exercise (and were therefore likely to be discouraged from trying at all). A French study monitored the health and activity levels of seniors over the age of 65 for 13 years. The results were as follows: Those who did the 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise (for example, brisk walking) had a 57 percent lower risk of death. That's significantly more than the 30 percent previously calculated for that level of exercise. The big news, however, for those of us who aren't fans of exercise, is that 15 minutes a day, five days a week, is a good target for seniors. That can include swimming, riding a bike, brisk walking, dancing, ping-pong, badminton -- anything that gets you moving for 15 minutes. Granted, that 15 minutes a day (or 75 minutes per week) only gets you a 22 percent lower risk for mortality, but it's a start. My theory: Once we start with that 15 minutes, we're likely to increase it a little at a time. Bump that up a few minutes per day, and we can raise that to a 51 percent lower risk. * For a nation based on a foundation of democracy, the U.S. certainly has a lot of states (that were originally colonies, of course) named for British royalty. The state of Virginia, for instance, was named for Queen Elizabeth I, known as the "Virgin Queen"; and Georgia was named in honor of King George II. King Charles II got both North and South Carolina, while the Duke of York and Albany -- later King James II -- was honored when the state of New York was named. Even France got in on the action: When explorer Robert de la Salle claimed a large chunk of territory for France in 1682, he named it Louisiana, after King Louis XIV.

Tasty

Summer Fruit Bowl The best part of the bounty of summer is the abundance of fresh fruits. Eating fruit is not only delicious and refreshing, it's also good for you. Most fruits are naturally low in fat, sodium and calories. None have cholesterol. People who eat fruit as part of an overall healthy diet are likely to have a reduced risk of heart disease, including heart attack and stroke. It also may protect against certain types of cancers, and reduce the risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Fruits are the source of many essential nutrients that aren't consumed as much as they should be, including potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin C and folate (folic acid). Diets rich in potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Sources of potassium in-

clude bananas, prunes and prune juice, dried peaches and apricots, cantaloupe, honeydew melon and orange juice. Dietary fiber from fruits helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower the risk of heart disease. Fiber is important for proper bowel function, and helps reduce constipation and diverticulosis. Fiber-containing foods such as fruits help us feel full with fewer calories. (Note: Fruit juices contain little or no fiber.) Folate (folic acid) helps form red blood cells. In women of childbearing age, folic acid reduces the risk of neural tube defects, spina bifida and anencephaly during fetal development. My recipe for fruit salad is combined with quinoa to make it a healthier and more versatile dish for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Quinoa is na-

tive to Bolivia and is a relative of Swiss chard, spinach and beets. It comes in three varieties (whole grain white, red and black) and is gluten free and packed with nutritional benefits. Quinoa also is a complete protein, which means it provides all nine essential amino acids necessary for good health. Your body can't produce these nutrients itself, so you have to get them frequently through food. Just one cup contains 8 grams of protein, 5 grams of fiber, plus significant amounts of iron, magnesium, folate and heart-healthy omega 3 fatty acids.

RV Survival Guide So you've bought an RV and you're ready to take to the open road in 3 mpg increments. Due to the RV's sheer size and the amount of money invested in it, you're going to have a lot of questions and concerns your first couple of times out. That's why most people recommend you do a "dry run" in your driveway or local RV park. Here, are some more suggestions.

Wanderlust can be a great thing, but you have to understand that you can no longer drive and/or park where you are used to driving and parking. You need to research RV-specific routes that take into account things like your propane tank and the size of your vehicle. You don't want to drive 20 miles down a dirt road in, say, West Virginia only to encounter a small bridge intended for 19th-century mule traffic, with no space to turn around. Also, you might want to check up on the site you plan on visiting. Good Sam is a RV resource online that offers trip planning and Frommer-like RV-park ratings.

Learn to love Walmart ... and baskets You need help This should be self-evident. Most people never have problems with their RV, but when you consider what can go wrong with a car or truck, or a vacation home or boat, and combine them into one vehicle, you'll learn soon enough that stuff happens. And when it does you'll need special RV insurance, and that insurance should come with roadside assistance or else you'll have to pay for RV-specific roadside help -- even if you have roadside assistance for your cars.

Another Life Saved!

It also helps to have another set of eyes on board (and no, your dog or cat does not count). You'll need someone to help you back in and out of tight situations and to remind you of all the things you forgot to do before taking off.

Make a checklist Like any good pilot, you need a checklist of things to do before taking off and landing at your site. There are apps for this and lists on the Internet, and they come in handy when you have about 20 things to shut off,

One of the few places that will welcome an RV with open arms is Walmart, where you can park without hassle (something you cannot do in most municipalities) and stock up on supplies, as they have a whole row dedicated to RVs. Also they sell baskets, lots of them, which you'll need to put everything in because, remember, your house on wheels moves and things definitely will have shifted during the ride. Also, if you just got done camping, you are one of those people dressed weird in Walmart ... just saying.

Relax (or don't do it) Take the slow road, and stop and see the world's largest ball of twine, have a sandwich at the beach and see the sights with your family and friends. Sure, it gets a little Outward Bound at times, but in the end, the memories are what you're really buying. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. However, a number of indoor and outdoor projects will increase the value of your home. Here are five projects on the midrange cost scale that will provide the biggest return for your remodeling investment:

their cost include a minor (below $20,000) kitchen remodel (79.3 percent), wood window replacement (78.8 percent) or converting part of your attic to a bedroom (77.2 percent). Remodeling your bathroom will recoup 70 percent of its cost.

1. Entry door: Replacing your entry door with a steel door will recoup 101.8 percent of the cost. (Replacing it with a fiberglass door will return 72 percent.)

So, when putting together a remodeling project list, take their lasting value into account. You may decide to downscale that ambitious kitchen or bathroom remodel and shift some of the budget to your home's exterior elements.

By Samantha Mazzotta

2. Veneer: Replacing the bottom third of your home's exterior siding with manufactured stone veneer will recoup 92.2 percent of the cost.

Q: What upgrades to our house will pay off the most in the long run? -- Karl V., Melrose, Massachusetts

3. Garage door: Replacing your garage door will recoup 88.4 percent of the cost.

A: Many people think that remodeling the kitchen is an expense they can fully recoup (in terms of home value or resale value), but that is not necessarily the case. According to Remodeling Magazine, which puts out a Cost vs. Value chart each year on home remodeling, a major kitchen remodel averaging $56,768 will recoup 67.8 percent of that cost, or just $38,485.

4. Siding replacement: Adding vinyl siding to your home's exterior will recoup 80.7 percent of the cost.

TIP: Wood or vinyl windows? Carefully consider the merits of both before deciding on replacement windows. For example, wood windows are aesthetically pleasing, but vinyl windows require almost no maintenance.

5. Wooden deck: Adding or expanding a wooden deck will recoup 80.5 percent of the cost.

ing a week on a farm could lead an animal lover in the direction of veterinary medicine. A water or ocean-related camp could lead to a career in marine ecology. A week at video camp could open opportunities in television, digital media, advertising and more.

SUMMER CAMPS Are the kids talking about summer camp yet? It’s time to start investigating the possibilities and get them signed up. Look into day or sleep-away camps at colleges near you. Look for math, computer and science camps run by older students. Drama majors especially love to introduce theater to kids. The fees for these day camps are typically fairly low. For older kids, combining sleep-away camp with their interests could lead to new career possibilities. Spend-

When it comes to special interests, no matter what they are, there’s a camp for it. If your child wants to get a head start with SAT tests, there are prep camps for that. Photography, rock music songwriting, entrepreneurship, wilderness adventure -- they all have camps. Check www.camppage.com and explore the information in the drop-down menus. Search through the offerings at www.campresource.com. It has comprehensive listings of sleepaway camps, day camps, co-ed, boys, girls and traditional camps. Use the drop-down menus to search for camp types, activities and locations. For kids who want a new experience, search for camps that emphasize Nashville music, rodeo riding, PGA golf or hockey. Look for teen travel camps that provide tours and camps all over the globe. Language

MORE JUNE EVENTS • Many of today’s music lovers have no idea what an “LP” is, choosing to download their music onto iPods and other electronic devices. In June of 1948, Columbia Records unveiled a 12-inch (30.5-cm) vinyl disc with 17 minutes of music on each side, revolving 33 1/3 times per minute. Up until that time, the “78” was the trend for phonograph records, revolving 78 times per minute and containing just one song per side. The first public demonstration of the Long-Playing record took place at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, a recording of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. It would seem that LP’s would have instantly replaced the old “78”s in popularity, but four years later, “78”s still accounted for half of all record sales. • On June 6, 1946, a group of major arena owners met at New York City’s Commodore Hotel to discuss the formation of a league of professional basketball teams. They decided on 11 cities that would have a pro franchise – Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, New York, Toronto, Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, and Cleveland. They named the league the Basketball Association of America, but three years later the name was changed to the National Basketball Association. Today there are 30 teams in six divisions in the NBA. • On June 6, 1944, in the midst of World War II, Allied forces crossed the English Channel, landing on the beaches of Normandy, France. On the orders of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, 6,000 vessels with 176,000 soldiers aboard departed England on a mission to liberate Western Europe from Nazi control. Overhead, 822 planes had dropped 18,000

After

parachutists early that morning. Code-named Operation Neptune, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. • Remember when boxer Mike Tyson bit off opponent Evander Holyfield’s ear? That match took place on June 28, 1997 in the third round of the pair’s heavyweight match. It was two years after Tyson had been released from a federal penitentiary after serving three years on a rape charge. After Tyson regained his heavyweight title, the bout with Holyfield was scheduled. Holyfield easily won the first two rounds, which riled Tyson greatly. In the third round, Tyson spit out his mouthpiece, bit off a chunk of Holyfield’s right ear and spit it out onto the mat. Amazingly, Tyson was only given a two-point deduction, a physician declared Holyfield could continue, and the fight went on! With any sense of composure completely gone, Tyson then went after Holyfield’s other ear, biting an even bigger piece. The fight was called off, and Tyson was disqualified, fined $3 million (out of his $30 million purse) and suspended for 16 months from boxing. • Primarily celebrated in Texas, June 19 is known as Juneteenth, also referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. Even though President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation in January, 1863, the act had little impact in Texas because of the small number of Union troops stationed there to enforce Lincoln’s order. Once General Robert E. Lee surrendered in April, 1865, Union soldiers landed at Galveston that June, bearing tidings that the war was over and all slaves were free.

majors can take advantage of language immersion camps and tours, and more. There's even a roller-coaster camp! It involves visiting amusement parks across the country in one, two, three, four and six-week camps. For younger children that you want to keep nearby, check the resources around you for traditional camps at recreation departments, the YMCA and churches. They’re sure to provide plenty of summer activities: swimming, boating, archery, sports, arts and crafts, and singing around the campfire. When it comes to choosing a camp, the American Camp Association has must-read information at www.acacamps.org. Look for How to Choose a Camp: Safety Tips. Learn about the difference between accreditation versus licensing, questions to ask camp directors, camper-to-counselor ratios and how the camp handles behavioral and disciplinary problems. Please Support Our Advertisers DEAR CHARLOTTE: Flea infestations are incredibly annoying and tough to beat --even when you think eas have been eradicated, they often come back. Winter temperatures often send these pests into dormancy or at least reduce their activity, but they return with a vengeance in spring and summer. A pre-emptive attack could make a big difference in this summer's ea wars. While you may not notice adult eas on your pets just yet, ea eggs or larvae may be present on their fur or throughout the house. Start by talking to the veterinarian about the best treatment for your pets. Many owners swear by one-month topical treatments that are applied to the back of a dog or cat's neck, but others are leery due to potentially serious side effects. Consider alternatives if you're not sure.

SUMMER FLEA CONTROL DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Temperatures are really warming up now, and with it, I know, will come the annual onslaught of eas on my dog, cat and all over my house. Is there any way I can get rid of eas for good? -- Charlotte in Columbia, Maryland

Next, treat your home for eas -- using a carpet and upholstery treatment designed for both adult eas and their eggs. You'll want to tackle not just the carpet and dusty corners of the house, but the furniture and any linens, such as curtains, that aren't frequently cleaned.
