The 129th edition of the Wimbledon Championships tennis tournament is taking place in London from June 29 to July 12 and Tidbits is investigating the particulars on this famous sports event... • Every year beginning on the sixth Monday before the first Monday of August, the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis championship is held over 13 days in Wimbledon, a suburb of London. Wimbledon is located seven miles (11.3 km) southwest of central London. In Old English, the community’s name means “Wynnman’s hill.” • Back in 1868, the private All England Croquet Club was founded off Worple Road in Wimbledon. In 1875, lawn tennis was added to the club and the name was changed to the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet club. Two years later, the lawn tennis championships were held for the first time, with Gentlemen’s Singles as the only event. About 200 spectators attended the tournament, paying one shilling to watch the finals. Spencer Gore defeated 21 other contenders to take the title. • The first players used heavy snowshoe-shaped rackets. The net was 5 feet high (1.5 m) at center.

WIMBLEDON (continued):

ships, Wimbledon.” It is one of the four major Grand Slam tennis tournaments, along with the Australian Open, the French Open, and the U.S. Open. Of the four, Wimbledon remains the only one that is still played on grass, while the other three are played on hard or clay surfaces. • Wimbledon’s turf is composed of 100% perennial rye grass, cut to an exact height of 8 millimeters. How a ball bounces depends on the soil, not the grass. The soil must be hard and dry, so the courts are rolled and covered to keep them in top form. The lines are not marked with paint, but rather with a mixture containing titanium dioxide, of which 500 gallons (416 British gallons) are used every year. • Until 1884, only gentlemen participated in the championships. That year, Ladies’ Singles and Gentlemen’s Doubles were added. Ladies’ Doubles and Mixed Doubles came along in 1913. At the beginning, only amateurs were allowed to compete, a rule that stood until 1968 when professionals competed alongside amateurs. • It wasn’t until 1920 that an American won a Wimbledon title, when Bill Tilden won the Men’s Singles. That was also the first year a woman played without wearing a corset! • In 1922, the tournament moved from its original location on Worple Road to its current Church Road site.

• It was a long dry spell for England in the singles events. In the men’s singles, until 2013, the host country hadn’t had a men’s winner since 1936, with Andy Murray finally breaking the losing streak. British ladies have been waiting since 1977 for another singles winner

• What do folks take home for souvenirs from the tournament? In 2014, towels were a big item, with 16,000 Men’s Championship towels and 9,000 Women’s Championship towels sold. Spectators also like the mini-tennis ball key ring, snapping up 11,000 of these souvenirs.

• Czechoslovakia native Martina Navratilova made her debut at Wimbledon in 1973 at age 16. Not only had she never played on a grass court before, she had never even seen one until the week prior! In 1975, at 18, she sought political asylum in the United States and was stripped of her Czech citizenship. In 1982, she began a sixyear reign as champion. Finally in 1988, German Steffi Graf beat Navratilova, and again in 1989. Martina took the title back in 1990. She holds the record for the most singles wins with nine. She is also the oldest winner, having won the mixed doubles in 2003 when she was nearly 47 years old. Martina is also the record-holder for the most Wimbledon matches played by either male or female, 326 matches.

• Last year’s attendance at Wimbledon topped 491,000, while the viewing audience is estimated at close to 380 million. There can be 38,500 spectators on the grounds at any one time, with the maximum capacity of the Centre Court at 15,000. More than 54,000 tennis balls were used during the tournament. In 2014, the Men’s and Ladies’ Singles champions received about $3 million in winnings.

• The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, have ten Women’s Singles titles between them, with five apiece. They also have five doubles titles. A Williams sister won the singles championship in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2012. • English tennis player Tim Henman has the distinction of being the first person ever to be disqualified from Wimbledon. Henman had a little temper tantrum during one of his matches and smacked a ball away, unfortunately straight into the head of one of the teenaged ball girls, a blow that sent her to the ground. The extremely apologetic Henman later sent flowers to the young lady.

• The longest tennis match ever played took place during the 2010 Wimbledon tournament when John Isner defeated Nicholas Mahut in a match lasting 11 hours and five minutes. It was played over a three-day period. • Wimbledon is steeped in tradition, including the eating of strawberries and cream by spectators. This past year, 61,730 lbs. (28,000 kg) of berries were consumed along with 7,400 quarts (7,000 liters) of cream during the 13-day period. Tradition also includes a strict dress code for players, which requires they dress “almost entirely in white.” It does not allow off-white or cream, and if a stripe of color is on a shirt or shorts, it can be no wider than one centimeter. No fluorescent colors are allowed on clothing or headwear, and it is preferred that all shorts and skirts are totally white. The rules even apply to shoes. In 2014, Roger Federer was required to change his shoes because they had bright orange soles. Even the great Navratilova was told that her skirt was against the rules because it had a pale blue stripe. Between 1988 and 1990, tennis great Andre Agassi refused to compete at Wimbledon, protesting the dress code. • There’s even a dress code for spectators at Wimbledon. Don’t try to get into the gate wearing jeans, flip-flops, hoodies, strapless tops, or short skirts!

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

NILS BOHLIN Although the name of Nils Ivar Bohlin is unfamiliar to most, nearly everyone uses his invention every single day. Take a few minutes to learn about the inventor of the seat belt! • At age 19, Nils Bohlin already had a diploma in mechanical engineering from a Swedish university. At 22, he was hired by the aircraft maker, Saab, in their design department. Focusing on various safety features for airplanes, he received one patent for his invention of the rocket-launched ejection seat for Saab fighter airplanes and another for a “device to protect an occupant against bodily injury during emergency escape from an aircraft.” • In 1958, at age 38, Bohlin was considered an expert in aeronautical safety engineering. He was recruited by Volvo and joined the company that year. The head of Volvo had lost a relative in a car accident and gave Bohlin the mission of developing an improved seat belt. Safety belts had been an option in some automobiles since the mid-1940s, but were just a strap across the waist that frequently caused serious internal abdominal injuries and head injuries in accidents when the wearer was thrown forward. • Bohlin set to work designing a device that would restrain the body safely under extreme conditions. In his words, “I realized both the upper and lower body must be held securely in place with one strap across the chest and one across the hips,” along with “an immovable anchorage point for the buckle…” He also knew he wanted it to be put on easily with one hand.

• Less than a year after signing on with Volvo, Bohlin had come up with a threepoint lap and shoulder seatbelt, introducing the invention to Volvo in 1959. The company added the seatbelt to its cars, with the Amazon and PV544 as the first cars in the world to have safety belts as a standard feature. Volvo graciously made the new design available to other manufacturers for free. • Bohlin proved the effectiveness of his seat belt in a study of 28,000 accidents in Sweden, showing that “unbelted occupants sustained fatal injuries throughout the whole speed scale, whereas none of the belted occupants was fatally injured at accident speeds below 60 mph.” As a result, by 1968, it was a requirement on all new American vehicles. • In 1969, Bohlin became the head of Central Research and Development for Volvo. His innovations for the company weren’t finished yet – he went on to invent the Side Impact Protection System for Volvo, receiving a patent for “side-collision protection in automotive vehicles.” Bohlin died on the same day he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. • Bohlin’s three-point seat belt is regarded as one of the eight “most important patents to have benefited humanity from 1885 to 1985.” The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the belt reduces the risk of death in car accidents by at least 45%, and that about 11,000 lives are saved each year in the U.S. alone. At the time of Bohlin’s death in 2002, Volvo estimated that the seat belt had saved more than one million lives.

Audrey Hepburn could appreciate the irony that while she spent years studying ballet, she never became a dancer. And although she didn't devote time to acting during her formative years, she became both a movie and stage star. She was a rare phenomenon who did not have classic movie-star looks. In fact, renown British photographer and fashion designer Cecil Beaton once described Hepburn as "a new type of beauty: huge mouth, flat Mongolian features, heavily painted eyes, a coconut coiffure, long nails without varnish, a wonderfully lithe figure, a long neck, but perhaps too scraggy." What Beaton failed to note is that regardless of the imperfections he saw, Hepburn had a presence that connected both professionally and privately. She appeared in the Broadway production of "Gigi" when she was 22 years old. In 1953, she made her first film, "Roman Holiday," co-starring Gregory Peck. It was a hit, and she began "Sabrina" the following year.

A great deal was riding on "Sabrina." The film was crucial to her career, since it would prove -- one way or another -- if her success in "Roman Holiday" had been a fluke. It was a difficult project. The script was written as they went along, and Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, her co-stars, disliked each other. The set was often hostile and tense. Despite difficulties, when Hepburn and Holden met it was electrifying, and their attraction gave "Sabrina" an authenticity that made the film a major hit. Through extensive interviews, author Edward Epstein reveals for the first time the on-set romance between these two film legends, and how it became a common thread in both their lives. Q: With all the new shows announced for the 2014-15 TV season, it was said that "24: Live Another Day" would be shown in early spring 2015. Kiefer Sutherland starred in the series "24," and either the 2015 show was going to start another series or a miniseries. Can you tell us what happened or is going to happen to "24" this year or in the future? -- Jo-Ann, West Haven, Connecticut A: Back in fall 2013 (not 2014), I did report on the premiere of "24: Live Another Day," which did indeed air from May through mid-July 2014. In September 2014, the 12-episode DVD and Blu-ray came out. Either you read an outdated article or got your years mixed up. There is no word yet on whether "24" will continue as an event series; however, I can tell you that "Live Another Day" was very well-received. In fact, the Blu-ray edition has a bonus episode called "24: Solitary," which takes place approximately three years after the events of "Live Another Day" and features the return of Carlos Bernard as Tony Almeida as he attempts to be released from solitary confinement. *** Q: Can you tell me how Vivian Campbell of the band Def Leppard is doing? I heard his cancer came back. -- Larry E., via email A: As of this writing, Vivian had to miss the first few shows of the band's summer tour with Styx and Tesla to receive treatment for a recurrence of his Hodgkin's lymphoma. Vivian explained what is going on via his Facebook page: "So, so happy to report that I've dodged the bullet of radiation. I was due to start a course that would have sidelined me for most of the first leg of the U.S. tour, but my brilliant doctors have steered me toward an alternative course of treatment that will enable me to rejoin the tour. Furthermore, they've

Aaron Paul

tailored future treatments to accommodate the tour schedule, so I won't have to miss any more shows." *** Q: Can you tell me what Aaron Paul is up to now that "Breaking Bad" is over? -- Holly H., via email A: Hulu just announced that Aaron has been cast as the lead in its new, original series called "The Way" (working title). Aaron will play Eddie Cleary, a convert to a controversial movement with a wayward past. He's a husband and father who suffers a crisis of faith when all that he's come to accept as truth in his life is fundamentally challenged. Michelle Monaghan plays his wife, Sarah. "The Way" examines a family at the center of a controversial movement, with each episode taking an in-depth look at what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want. The series is slated to premiere this winter. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or e-mail her at letters@cindyelavsky.com. may cause pain, numbness and weakness of the wrist and hand. The thumb and middle three fingers are most often affected. In advanced cases, the hand muscles may become atrophied. The sooner the pressure on the nerve is relieved, the more likely there will not be permanent nerve damage. It sounds to me like the first surgery was not done soon enough to prevent damage. If that's the case, then surgery on your left hand, done sooner after the onset of symptoms, might prevent the long-term numbness present in your right hand. However, it's possible that the diagnosis was wrong or that the surgery might not have been effective, even if done promptly.

PERSISTENT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME DEAR DR. ROACH: I had surgery late last year on my right wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome. The numbness in my fingers has not changed. Now I'm faced with the same problem in my left hand. I'm going to forget surgery, seeing as it wasn't successful in my right hand. I decided to go to an acupuncturist for laser treatments. I also had a cortisone shot. Neither of these has helped. Do you know of a solution for my problem? -- P.M.

At least one study of needle acupuncture showed that it is as effective as a cortisone injection. This study excluded people who already had fixed numbness in the fingers, who are less likely to be helped by any treatment. I have not found any evidence that laser treatment is effective. My advice is to first be sure of the diagnosis. An EMG test is a study of nerve function, which can confirm the diagnosis and may be able to predict how much damage there is and provide guidance on treatment. If damage is not too severe, other treatments such as splinting, medication, yoga or ultrasound may be helpful. If advanced, surgery done quickly still may be your best bet.

ANSWER: Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by compression on the median nerve, as it runs down the arm through a "tunnel" of bone and connective tissue deep in the wrist. It

Foods for Cancer Prevention

He observed that in countries where diets are high in fiber (that is, plant-based diets), there were fewer cases of colon cancer. Around the world, this has proven true. The highest fiber intakes are found in non-industrialized nations where meat is scarce and plant foods fill the menu. Animal products contain no fiber. The U.S. and other Western nations whose diets are based upon animal products have the highest rates of colon cancer.

Of the many diseases that affect people these days, cancer is among the most feared. But despite a wealth of scientific data, most people remain unaware of how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, as much as 80 percent of all cancers are due to identified factors, and thus are potentially preventable. Thirty percent are due to tobacco use, and as much as 35 to 50 percent are due to foods. It is easy to control these and other risk factors.

What Is Cancer? Cancer begins as a single abnormal cell that begins to multiply out of control. Groups of such cells form tumors and invade healthy tissue, often spreading to other parts of the body. Carcinogens are substances that promote the development of cancerous cells. They may come from foods, from the air, or even from within the body. Most carcinogens are neutralized before damage can occur, but sometimes they attack the cell’s genetic material (DNA) and alter it. It takes years for a noticeable tumor to develop. During this time, compounds known as inhibitors can keep the cells from growing. Some vitamins in plant foods are known to be inhibitors. Dietary fat, on the other hand, is known to be a promoter that helps the abnormal cells grow quickly.

Fiber Fights Cancer In 1970, British physician, Dennis Burkitt, observed that a high-fiber diet reduces diseases of the digestive tract.

In the U.S., the average daily fiber intake is 10 to 20 grams per day. Experts recommend 30 to 40 grams per day. The best sources of fiber are whole grains, beans, peas, lentils, vegetables, and fruits. Foods that are closest to their natural state, unrefined and unpeeled, are highest in fiber.

Fat Raises Cancer Risks Cross-cultural studies have revealed that the populations with the highest levels of fat consumption are also the ones with the highest death rates from breast and colon cancer. The lowest rates are in groups with the lowest consumption of fats.5 Migration studies help to rule out the influence of genetics. Many studies indicate that fat in foods increases one’s risk for cancer, and it may also adversely affect breast cancer survival rates for those who have cancer. Although the total amount of fat one eats is of concern, there is evidence that animal fat is much more harmful than vegetable fat. One study noted a 200 percent increase in breast cancer among those who consume beef or pork five to six times per week. Dr. Sheila Bingham, a prominent cancer researcher form the University of Cambridge, notes that meat is more closely associated with colon cancer than any other factor.8 Meat and milk are also linked to both prostate and ovarian cancers.

How Fat Affects Cancer Risks Fat has many effects within the body. It increases hormone production and thus raises breast cancer risks. It also stimulates the production of bile acids which have been linked to colon cancer. The average diet in the U.S. is about 37 percent fat. The National Cancer Institute suggests that people lower that percentage down to 30 percent; however, studies have shown that fat intake should be well below 30 percent to have an anti-cancer affect. Ten to 15 percent is more likely to be helpful.

have it? I am told that it is an inherited disease. None of these "family" ever had it! -- L.Q. ANSWER: Lipedema is indeed a rare disease, although it may be underdiagnosed. It almost always is found in women, and is suspected when there is marked fat deposition symmetrically between the waist and ankles. The areas affected often are tender or painful to the touch. It is not the same as lymphedema, fluid increase due to poorly functioning or damaged lymph vessels, although people with lipedema can develop lymphedema. Treatment includes compression garments or manual lymph drainage, often combined with surgical treatments such as liposuction. Only about 15 percent of people with lipedema have a family history. It's not surprising that you can't find relatives with it. More information is available at several support groups, and at www.curelipedema.org/lipedema/. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. and beans, as being the best for cancer prevention. Not only are vegetables low in fat and high in fiber, they also contain many cancer-fighting substances. Not surprisingly, vegetarians, whose diets easily meet these requirements, are at the lowest risk for cancer. Vegetarians have about half the cancer risk of meat-eaters. Vegetarians have higher blood levels of beta-carotene. They consume more vitamin C, beta-carotene, indoles, and fiber than meat-eaters. Vegetarians also have stronger immune systems. German researchers recently discovered that vegetarians have more than twice the natural killer cell activity of meat-eaters.

Conclusion A cancer prevention diet is one that is high in fiber, low in fat (especially animal fat), and includes generous portions of fruits and vegetables. It also minimizes or excludes alcohol. The best diets are pure vegetarian diets. Aside from being books meant for a young audience, all of these titles have been banned at one time or another. * There are about the same number of chickens as there are humans on the planet. * If you're like 83 percent of pet owners who responded to a recent survey, you feel that you receive more unconditional love from your pet than from your kids, your best friend or even your romantic partner.

It seems that a Native American tribe in Connecticut was known as the Podunk, and a nearby river was called by the same name. Local small towns on the river were referred to as "Podunk," too, and so the word entered the lexicon. *** Thought for the Day: "I have lived in this world just long enough to look carefully the second time into things that I am most certain of the first time." -- Josh Billings (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRETCHING SUMMER FOOD DOLLARS School's out for the summer, and that means more meals at home for many children. This can pose challenges to the family food budget. It is important to provide balanced, nutritious meals for your children throughout the summer. Here are some tips to help keep costs down: * Choose a variety of healthy foods so children don't get bored with the same foods. Try sandwich wraps with lots of veggies inside, fresh fruits for sweetness and nutrition * Choose whole grains, which help you feel full. Whole-grain cereals and breads are great for breakfast and lunch, and (low sugar) whole-grain oatmeal-raisin cookies provide staying power. * Choose new, interesting or favorite vegetables from a local farmer's market. Vegetables have lots of nutrients and fiber to help you feel full. Have vegetables washed, cut and ready in the refrigerator to add to meals or to eat as snacks. * Drink lots of water. Water cools us off, hydrates the body and helps us feel full longer. * Use caution with low-nutrient foods like chips, snack cakes, cookies, soda and juice drinks. These foods can be very expensive, and they are not very filling or satisfying. * Let your children help plan meals and snacks so they can have some of their favorite foods. If they help plan

Blueberries, strawberries, peaches, watermelons and fresh garden veggies are always a treat. MORE TENNIS GREATS • Billie Jean King competed at Wimbledon for the first time in 1961 at age 17. That year and the next, King and her Ladies’ Doubles partner were the champions. It wasn’t until 1966 that King took the Ladies’ Singles title. She has won a record 20 titles at Wimbledon – six singles, 10 Ladies’ Doubles, and four Mixed Doubles – over the years from 1961 through 1974. She competed there 22 times in 23 years. • Andre Agassi’s career prize money amounts to more than $31 million. Turning professional at 16, Agassi had endorsement earnings of $25 million a year during the height of his career in the 1990s. This 1992 Men’s Singles winner at Wimbledon is the last American male to win the French Open (1999) and the Australian Open (2003). In his early 20s, Agassi dated singer Barbra Streisand, who was 28 years his senior. After a two-year-marriage to actress Brooke Shields, Agassi married fellow Wimbledon winner Steffi Graf in 2001 • German-born Graf accumulated nearly $22 million in prize money over the course of her career. Having played her first professional tournament at age 13, Graf went on to win seven Ladies Singles’ titles at Wimbledon, along with six French Open wins, five U.S. Open titles, and another four singles wins at the Australian Open. • Roger Federer has captured seven men’s singles titles, in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2012. But he’s not alone with that record. Maryland-born Pete Sampras won seven out of eight years from 1993 through 2000. Between 1881 and 1889, William Renshaw won the tournament seven times. • For five consecutive years from 1976 through 1980, Swedish-born Bjorn Borg was the Men’s Singles champion. Borg was the first player to earn more than one million dollars in prize money in a single season. When he retired abruptly at age 26 in 1983, he owned a penthouse in Monte Carlo, a Long Is-

land mansion, and an island off the Swedish coast. Yet in 2006, the tennis great was nearly bankrupt due to poor business ventures. Borg decided to auction off his five Wimbledon trophies and two of his rackets. The trophies were expected to bring between $350,000 and $525,000 and the rackets, about $25,000 each. Borg’s former rival John McEnroe talked Borg out of the decision, but unfortunately, Borg had already handed them over to the auction house and had to buy them back. • John McEnroe was well known for his outbursts and temper tantrums on the courts, and was even booed by the crowds for his poor behavior. He was fined and suspended for shouting objections at umpires’ calls during his matches, and once slammed his racket into a courtside juice cart after calling the umpire a jerk. Yet this “bad boy” was a #1 player who took the Men’s Singles title in 1981, 1983, and 1984 • Three-time Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles champ Chris Evert still holds the record for the career winning percentage on clay courts of 94.55%. She is also remembered for her romance with fellow Wimbledon champ, six-time winner Jimmy Connors. The couple was engaged in 1974 when Chris was 19, and they played mixed doubles on the court now and then, but the pair called it quits before the wedding day arrived.

* Pick sunglasses that closely fit your face to keep UV rays from reaching your eyes from the side. Add a widebrimmed hat. Remember that the UV protection level isn't determined by the darkness of the lenses.

Choose Sunglasses for More Than Style Here comes summer … and the sun's damaging glare. Do your sunglasses protect your eyes from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays? An American Optometric Association survey found that nearly half of us don't look for the level of UV protection when we buy sunglasses. The short-term effects of UV rays can result in actual sunburn of the eye, called photokeratitis. While the condition is temporary, the symptoms can be painful: light sensitivity, tearing and a feeling of grit or a foreign body in the eye. Longer-term effects of exposure to UV rays can be much more serious: macular degeneration, cataracts and even cancer of the areas around the eye. Here are some of the AOA guidelines to look for when buying sunglasses: * Choose sunglasses that block 75 percent to 90 percent of visible light and at least 99 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. If you wear contacts that don't offer that protection, you need sunglasses. Consider ordering a specific pair of prescription sunglasses with the correct range of UV protection.

If you have part of your retirement money in savings bonds, the newly announced interest rates might have you in a spin. As of May, it was announced that Series I bonds will earn zero percent interest for six months, down from 1.94 percent. The Series EE bonds will see a rate of only 0.30 percent for the next 20 years. However, those are for new bond purchases only. You can breathe a little easier now.

MATTRESS•BEDROOMS MURPHY BEDS

* Check the lens color carefully. Avoid sunglasses where the lenses don't exactly match in color or that have distortions. Look at something in the distance to be sure it doesn't look wavy. (If you're driving, choose a gray tint for better color recognition of things around you.) And don't forget the kids. Their eyes are much more vulnerable to harmful effects of UV rays. Get them in the habit of wearing sunglasses when outdoors. Here are some terms to help you understand the different types of lenses.

You can check www.treasurydirect.gov for current values. Series I bonds have a fixed rate plus an inflation rate, which is reset every six months, for the 30-year life of the bond. How can I dry it quickly? — Chase T., Concord, N.H. A: First off, since you live in an apartment, contact the landlord or management office right away. They should be informed of any damage that has occurred, as soon as it happens. If the leaky air-conditioning unit belongs to the landlord or management company, then responsibility for the cost of the repair may belong to them. Many communities will send out a maintenance person or repair contractor to fix

al

So, what needs to be repaired? You'll need to stop the A/C unit from leaking immediately. Shut it off, take it out of the window if possible (have a helper assist you with the lift) and set in a plastic tub to let the condensed water drain out. Remove and clean the air filter and look for an external drain hose, if the unit has one, that might have come loose. Check the window for any swelling or damage to the wood, which can occur if a leak continues for some time. If the unit cools well, the problem may simply be that it is tilted too far forward, so that condensation runs inside along the bottom of the unit rather than dripping outside. Try placing the unit back into the window so that it has a slight tilt — about 5 degrees — up and out. Put a catch bucket underneath the leak area and turn the unit on for an hour or so, checking to see if condensation still comes inside. If

this doesn't fix it, you may need to repair or replace the unit. Next, the carpet. Blot the area with towels as soon as possible to remove excess water. Since it's been soaking for several days, you (or the repair person) need to dry the area all the way down to the underlayment and flooring. Remove furniture from the area — clear that half of the room completely, or the whole room if possible. Starting at the nearest corner, pull back the carpet, followed by the padding. Note where the water stains have reached. If the flooring underneath is wet, you need to dry that immediately. The repair or maintenance person will determine if the carpet is salvageable. Cost-conscious apartments will try to dry the carpet and flooring and at most replace the padding. If this is the direction taken, check the carpet frequently after the repair and make sure you don't smell mildew or mold. If mold sets in, the entire carpet will probably need to be replaced. HOME TIP: Water spills on carpet should be blotted up with paper or cloth towels as soon as possible to keep them from reaching the padding underneath. missing his parents — but not too much? — all those concerns we have when our kids are away from home for the ďŹ rst time. Well, here's what he wrote: "Dear Mom and Dad, I wasn't going to write, but they made me write it or I couldn't eat dinner. Camp is really fun. We won volleyball and water polo today and now tied for second place. Well, now that I got this written, I can go eat. Love, Dean"

CAMP MAIL CALL A yellowed 4-cent postcard surfaced from the bottom of an old shoebox stashed in our attic. A classic in time, it was sent before ZIP codes and eons before cellphones and snappy e-mail. The relic wasn't written by some great-grandparent, but by my "boomer" husband to his parents when he was off to camp for the ďŹ rst time at Round Lake in northern Minnesota at the age of 10. I'm sure his parents were waiting patiently for news of the week. Was he healthy, happy, making new friends,

While we like to receive any word from our kids while they're away at sleepover camp, it's the campers who also like to hear their name at "mail call." Here are some tips: — Write and send a note or two to your child's camp via U.S. mail a few days before he leaves home. Your child will be thrilled to hear from you the ďŹ rst day of camp. Keep the letters coming. They'll no doubt end up in a scrapbook (or shoebox) your child will treasure in years to come. — If your child is a baseball fan, remember to send clip-

pings of box scores of games missed while away, or send a favorite comic strip from the paper. — Tuck in addressed envelopes, stamps and a pen to encourage your child to write home. — If your child's camp will print out your e-mailed letters, try not to overload the system. There is a ďŹ ne line between keeping in touch and letting your child feel independent and "away" from his typical "at home" routine. Tip: A camp experience in the outdoors can positively impact a child. Consider sending a kid to camp by providing scholarship funds for someone who might not otherwise have resources. Contact a camp of your choice or your local YMCA directly to ďŹ nd out how you can sponsor a camper. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. In 2012 the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) introduced our Adoption Ambassador program which is similar to foster care. Adoption Ambassadors provide temporary homes for select dogs, cats and even rabbits. To bring awareness to this fabulous program and the pets that are waiting for their forever homes, the HSBC is hosting “Foster Frenzy Pet Adoptionsâ€? for the entire month of July. Anyone who adopts a pet that is part of our Ambassador foster program in July will pay half the regular adoption fee. A feline foster would be $12.50 and a canine foster would be $50.00. In addition, the adopter will receive a $50 gift card to the HSBC Pet Boutique (will be mailed to adopter two weeks after the adoption is complete) and the ďŹ rst 10 adopters will receive a bottle of Dogtails dog shampoo. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, preliminary vaccinations, heartworm test for dogs, feline leukemia test for cats, a microchip, a bag of Purina ONE pet food and a 10 day follow up care courtesy of VCA Animal Hospitals. If you would like to become an Adoption Ambassador and help us save more animals call the program manager at 954.266.6839. Teens can also partner with a parent and earn their required high school community service hours. All food and supplies needed to care for the pet are provided to you. Becoming an Adoption Ambassador is a wonderful opportunity for animal lovers to give back to the community, and help even more pets ďŹ nd the loving families they deserve.

Bring in your jewelry, gold, broken gold, silver, coins and antiques for cash.

The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-proďŹ t organization and The Adoption Ambassador program is made possible by support from the Mary N. Porter Designated Fund, David W. Leonard Fund, Francis and Bessie McDwyer Fund, and Helen Victoria Foote Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward.
