TIDBITS® MAKES MUSIC WITH SOME
CLASSICAL COMPOSERS
15
The Best Gift Ever!
by Kathy Wolfe In this issue, Tidbits is tuning into the facts on several famous composers who brought us some of the world’s favorite music. • Although many folks lump all of “classical music” together, there are actually four main periods of classification based on the time frame and characteristics of the music. The music of each period has traits that distinguish it from another. The Baroque Period is considered from 1600-1750, with its complex melodies composed by Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi, among others. During the Classical Period from 1750-1825, composers such as Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven wrote music with well-defined form, for example, the sonata, symphony, and concerto. Music composed during the Romantic Period from 1825 to the early 20th century became more expressive and emotional. Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Brahms, and Schumann were some of the main composers during this era. The music of the 20th century abandoned structural rules and introduced news styles and ideas, composed by such geniuses as Ravel, Stravinsky, Debussy, and Shostakovich.

• Beethoven experienced severe tinnitus, conveying his feelings in his writings,” My ears whistle and roar incessantly, night and day. I can say that I am leading a miserable life.” By age 31, he had lost 60% of his hearing, and by 46, he was completely deaf. Several causes have been suggested including lead poisoning or typhus. An autopsy revealed that three small bones of his inner ear were fused together, as well as being covered in lesions. Although Beethoven’s public performances lessened due to his deafness, his composing continued, writing his breathtaking Ninth Symphony after completely losing his hearing.

CLASSICAL COMPOSERS (continued):
• Beethoven composed nine symphonies, 16 string quartets, 32 piano sonatas, five piano concertos, a violin concerto, and an opera. This doesn’t begin to include the enormous amount of his chamber music and piano compositions. Careful listeners to his music can detect his intense emotions and love of nature. Various instruments create the sound of a wind and rain storm in the country, following by the serenity of the storm’s end. His use of trills on the violin imitate the chirping of insects and birds, while soft instrumental sounds mimic a flowing brook. • Even folks who are not classical music fans will most likely recognize compositions by Peter Tchaikovsky, the composer of The Nutcracker Suite, Sleeping Beauty, Romeo & Juliet, and Swan Lake. This Russian composer was able to read French and German by the age of six. He entered law school and worked as a clerk but took music lessons on the side, beginning to compose. He married in his mid30s, but left his wife after a few weeks, claiming she “possessed little intelligence.” • Ludwig von Beethoven was becoming a wellknown composer at age 30 and was already experiencing the disastrous indications of deafness. • Tchaikovsky was befriended by an anonymous benefactor, a very wealthy widow who financed him while he composed. The pair exchanged more than 1,000 letters over the next 13 years, but, upon her insistence, never met face to face. The widow abruptly terminated the relationship, claiming she

was broke, an unfounded claim. Tchaikovsky never heard from her again. His death remains a mystery, with some claiming he killed himself. The more accepted explanation is death from cholera after drinking contaminated drinking water. His death came just one week after the premiere of his Symphony Pathetique, considered by many to be his greatest work. • Considered the world’s first real child prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began studying violin and harpsichord at age 3. At 5, he was performing at the University of Salzburg and before Vienna’s Imperial Court the following year. He was 6 when he began composing minuets and other short pieces. His first symphony came along at age 8 and an opera at 12. Mozart received all of his education from his father, and never attended a school. He frequently experienced anxiety, loneliness, and sadness, and occasionally exhibited the symptoms of Tourette’s Syndrome and bipolarism. Although he only lived to age 35, he composed more than 600 pieces, including 68 symphonies, 27 piano concertos, horn concertos, violin and piano sonatas, and many volumes of string quartet music. • In 1785 the great austrian composer Joseph Haydn told Mozart's father: "I tell you before God, and as an honest man, your son is the greatest composer known to me by person and repute, he has taste and what is more the greatest skill in composition." Mozart met Joseph Haydn in Vienna around 1784, and the two composers became friends. When Haydn visited Vienna, they sometimes played together in an impromptu string quartet. Mozart's six quartets dedicated to Haydn date from the period 1782 to 1785, and are judged to be a response to Haydn's Opus 33 set from 1781. • The cause of Mozart’s death has never been definitely determined. It’s been hypothesized as everything from “severe miliary fever” to trichinosis,
mercury poisoning, and rheumatic fever. In all, researchers have speculated on nearly 120 different causes of death. • Robert Schumann unintentionally ruined his chance at a career as a pianist when he experimented with a device claiming to strengthen fingers. Johann Logier had designed a contraption, the “Chiroplast” that pulled the fingers toward the back of the hand, stating that it would increase finger flexibility and strength. Permanently debilitated by the invention, Schumann diverted his efforts toward composing and became one of the greatest composers of the Romantic Period. However, the artist was plagued throughout much of his life by anxiety, panic attacks, and fits of rage and violence. Two years before his death, he attempted suicide by throwing himself into the Rhine River. Rescued by passing fishermen, Schumann was admitted to an asylum, where he died two years later at 46. • The eccentric French composer Erik Satie wore nothing but identical gray velvet suits and called himself The Velvet Gentleman. He walked across Paris each day, a round trip of about 10 miles, carrying a hammer in his pocket for protection. As a youth, he was enrolled in the Paris Conservatory, but had nothing but scorn for the institution. He remained there only to avoid military service, and was labeled “untalented” and “worthless” by his teacher, receiving the nickname of “laziest student in the Conservatory.” Students were allowed to serve just one year in the military rather than the normal five. When Satie was drafted, he served less than a year, deliberately contracting bronchitis to obtain a release. He went on to become a popular composer, with his most famous compositions Trois Gymnopedies. When he died of cirrhosis of the liver, there was so much garbage in his apartment that friends threw out two carloads before his papers and manuscripts could be located.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:
LES PAUL Eric Clapton, Bob Marley, and Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page are just a few of the thousands of musicians who have chosen to play a Les Paul guitar. But Les Paul wasn’t just the inventor of a phenomenal electric guitar. Follow along and learn about his many accomplishments. • Les Paul was 8 when he began playing the harmonica, followed by the guitar. At age 9, he had already built a crystal radio. Wanting to play the harmonica and guitar at the same time, as a teenager he fashioned a holder from a metal coat hanger, shaping it to go over his shoulders, and soon he had his first patent. • Soon afterward, Paul stuck the needle of his parents’ record player into the surface of his acoustic guitar, and was struck with the idea of an electric guitar. Before long, he had wired a phonograph needle to his guitar and connected it to a radio speaker to amplify his acoustic guitar. However, Paul was unhappy with the hollow-body guitar, and determined to make a solid-body one that would have less feedback and a richer sound because of the wood’s mass. • He happened to live across from a railroad track where workers would throw defective rails under a bridge. Retrieving a cast-off, Paul whittled it down to a 4x4 piece, with a neck, bridge, pickup, and tuners attached, naming it “The Log.” In 1940, the Epiphone guitar factory helped produce a more attractive version with curved sides and an Epiphone fretboard. • Paul’s work was slowed down in 1941 when he was experimenting with im-
provements to his guitar and was severely electrocuted, an injury that required two years of recuperation. • Unhappy with the way his own recordings sounded, at the suggestion of crooner Bing Crosby, Paul built his own recording studio. It was here that he perfected multi-tracked recordings. His method was to first record a track onto a disc, then record himself playing another part with the first, both of which were mixed together onto a new track. The process was repeated adding a third layer, then another and another, each time mixing it with all the previous layers on a fresh disc. Paul also experimented with playing some of the parts at half speed, then playing them back at the actual rate. He fabricated his disc-cutter assembly using auto parts, including a flywheel from a Cadillac. His recording of “Lover, When You’re Near Me” required about 500 acetate discs to complete, on which he played eight different electric guitar parts. He later switched to magnetic tape, commissioning Ampex to build the first eight-track recorder. Les Paul was also responsible for the invention of echo, delay, and reverb. • In 1948, Paul was in a near-fatal auto accident, which sent his Buick convertible off the side of an overpass and 20 feet (6.1 m) into a ravine. He nearly lost his right arm, but doctors were able to set it to a 90-degree angle with seven screws which enabled him to play the guitar. • In his 90s, Les Paul still hadn’t give up inventing. Having to wear two hearing aids, he was dissatisfied with their quality. He was still playing weekly gigs in New York City, but spent his free time working on improving hearing aids. He passed away in 2009 at age 94.

by Rob Tannenbaum and Craig Marks (Plume, $20) By Chris Richcreek
As MTV grew in influence, videos began equaling success for many artists. For others, the opposite was true. Billy Squier's pink shirt and odd dancing in the video for "Rock Me Tonite" essentially derailed his career. Some of the artists found themselves as confused as Billy Joel, who said of his "Pressure" video: "It was [the director's] movie, his vision. I didn't know what any of it meant."
If the MTV era of the 1980s meant something to you, if it was an essential part of your musical and television life, then "I Want My MTV" should be an essential read for you.
Later chapters highlight the era's sex and drug controversies. As Ann Wilson of Heart says, "In the '80s, we drank a lot of champagne, we did a lot of blow [cocaine], and made a bunch of videos."
Authors Rob Tannenbaum and Craig Marks do a great job of capturing the phenomenon that was MTV from 1981, when "Video Killed the Radio Star" debuted, until 1992, when the reality show "The Real World" signaled a sea change for MTV programming. The best part is that the authors let hundreds of singers, musicians, video directors, executives and VJs (remember them?) tell the story.
MTV's move toward programming beyond videos helped the network evolve as its emphasis on music videos began to decline. For some, like producer Tony DiSanto, it was a natural progression: "It's still a network for and about youth culture, whether you're talking 'Jersey Shore' or a new Lady Gaga video."

HOLLYWOOD -- Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner "acted" as if their 10-year marriage was solid up to the day they confirmed it was over. No reasons were given, but you can be sure there's more to this story. Garner married husband No. 1, Scott Foley, in 2000 after they met on the set of "Felicity". Her career was riding high, his career was sliding, and they ended it in 2003. Garner worked with Affleck in "Pearl Harbor" (2001), and then again in "Daredevil" (2005). Somehow she ignored the Jennifer Lopez/"Gigli" debacle, and they wed that same year, in 2003. They had three children together. Foley married Polish actress Maria Dominczyk in 2007, and they also have three children. Affleck's "The Accountant," with J.K. Simmons, is due in January, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" arrives in March, and "Suicide Squad," with Jared Leto, will be out in August. Garner's last film, "Danny Collins," with Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Bobby Cannavale and Christopher Plummer, cost $10 million to produce but only earned $6.8 million. Her next film, "Nine Lives," with Kevin Spacey and Christopher Walken, will be released in April. Foley played Jake Ballard for 36 episodes in "Scandal." We'll have to watch Ben and Jen to see whom they work with next to see whom they cast as their next husband and wife! *** Johnny Depp's wedding to longtime girlfriend Amber Heard in February was pushed from the headlines when he smuggled his dogs into Australia. It was only his second marriage (his first was to make-up artist Anne Allison, 1983-1985), despite lengthy romances with actresses Jennifer Grey, Sherilyn Fenn and Winona Ryder. His relationship with actress/singer Vanessa Paradis produced two children, Lily Rose Melody Depp and John Jack Christopher Depp III. Depp and 16-year-old Lily Rose will be seen in the upcoming $5 million comedy-horror film "Yoga Hosers," which Kevin Smith wrote and is directing.

A: Soon some of your questions will be answered -- and no doubt, new ones will form. On Thursday, Sept. 24, at 8/7c, "Heroes Reborn" premieres on NBC with 13 new episodes. Returning cast members include Jack Coleman as HRG, Jimmy Jean-Louis as the Haitian, Masi Oka as Hiro Nakamura and Greg Grunberg as Matt Parkman. New cast members are Zachary Levi, Robbie Kay, Danika Yarosh, Judith Shekoni, Kiki Sukezane, Henry Zebrowski, Gatlin Green and Ryan Guzman. This go-round brings a fresh crop of heroes, with the following premise: A year ago, a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas, left the city decimated. Blamed for the tragic event, those with extraordinary abilities are in hiding or on the run from those with nefarious motives. The vigilantes include Luke (played by Zachary Levi) and Joanne (Judith Shekoni), who are seeking to avenge a tragic loss. Noah Bennet, aka HRG, has gone off the grid, but conspiracy theorist Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski) finds him and opens his eyes to the truth behind the Odessa tragedy. *** Q: I loved the new "Hobbit" movies, especially Aidan Turner as Kili. Summer is Here!
The series has been renewed for a second season, which most likely will air in 2016 (first in the U.K. before it comes across the pond to the U.S.). Aidan Turner Depending on how many seasons this lasts, it could help us "Downton Abbey" fans get over the hump once "Downton" airs its final season come January 2016. I checked its website several times, and the date for the premiere keeps changing. Can you explain what's happening? -- Allison C., Oakdale, California A: That is the $64,000 question, and as of this writing, even the folks at History don't know. Last I heard, the premiere date was supposed to be July 19, but that day has come and gone, with no "Truckers." They filmed season nine for about a month and a half in Winnipeg, Canada, but we don't yet know when it will premiere. Depression certainly may cause fatigue, but it is also common in people whose primary issue is a medical cause of fatigue. If after a thorough evaluation your diagnosis turns out to be chronic fatigue syndrome, the most effective therapies are cognitive behavioral therapy and a graded exercise program.

Since your symptoms happen after eating, it might be wise to see if certain foods are more likely to cause it by keeping a food diary. Many people find sugary foods cause loss of energy.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 71, with high blood pressure, COPD, diabetes and spinal stenosis. I smoke. After I eat breakfast or lunch, I rapidly fall into a daze during which I can hardly hold my head up. Sleep seems to be the only solution, but I still feel tired and listless the rest of the day. I have had this condition for over a year, and it is making me very depressed. I have read about CFS and autoimmune conditions, and the prognosis is not good. There must be some treatment for me. -- A.P. ANSWER: Fatigue is a common symptom, but it is perhaps the most nonspecific one we deal with in medicine. Many conditions primarily cause fatigue. The specific condition of chronic fatigue syndrome, by definition, is unexplained after a clinical evaluation. In your case, I would consider some important possible causes.
*** DR. ROACH WRITES: Many people have written about treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. I recently recommended CPAP machines (including, if necessary, repeated visits for proper fitting) and singing. I haven't discussed oral appliances, which move either the jaw or the tongue to change the anatomy of the back of the throat, allowing the airway to stay open during sleep. Only a few studies have been done on these, but they suggest that the oral appliances are nearly as effective as CPAP for people with mild or moderate OSA. People with severe OSA probably should use CPAP, since it is more effective. These are certainly an option for people who can't tolerate a CPAP despite several attempts by someone skilled at selecting the right mask and plenty of patience to learn to use it properly.
Although COPD and even spinal stenosis certainly can cause fatigue, the association with eating makes me wonder about your blood sugar levels, since poorly controlled diabetes can cause fatigue. Smoking doesn't cause fatigue, but quitting smoking certainly will help your COPD from progressing. All sleep disorders, but especially obstructive sleep apnea, cause fatigue that might not improve with sleeping.

I always consider thyroid disease, hemochromatosis and multiple sclerosis in anyone with profound fatigue. This list is only a small part of the many conditions a clinician is on the lookout for in someone with fatigue.

Eggs Increase Risk for Heart Disease Egg consumption may increase the risk for heart disease, according to a study published in Atherosclerosis. Researchers monitored the diets of 23,417 South Korean participants through the Kangbuk Samsung Health Study and found that heart disease risk increased incrementally with increased egg intake. Those who ate the most eggs, compared with those who ate the least, had 80 percent higher coronary artery calcium scores, a measure of heart disease risk. Eggs also appeared to increase the risk for obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.
Dietary Cholesterol Increases “Bad” Cholesterol Levels Dietary cholesterol will increase your total cholesterol level and LDL levels, or “bad” cholesterol, according to a meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers reviewed 40 studies that analyzed the effects of dietary cholesterol on heart disease and serum lipids, including total cholesterol and LDL levels. They found that when study participants increased their dietary cholesterol by up to 650 milligrams per day, their total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol increased an average of 12.1 mg/dL and 6.7 mg/ dL, respectively, compared with those who consumed less. These findings are in line with previous conclusions by the Institute of Medicine and the Food and Drug Administration. fiber (more than 26 grams per day) experienced an 18 percent reduction in diabetes risk compared to those who consumed the least (less than 19 grams per day). High fiber consumption also led to lower body weight. An additional meta-analysis of 18 studies showed a 9 percent decrease in risk for every 10 grams of fiber consumed. Overall, fiber from cereals contributed the highest risk reduction of up to 25 percent.
Vegan Diet May Help Diabetic Neuropathy A low-fat vegan diet may reduce pain associated with diabetic neuropathy, according to a new study published ahead of print on May 25, 2015, in Nutrition & Diabetes. In this randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers at the Physicians Committee, 35 individuals with type 2 diabetes and painful diabetic neuropathy were assigned to either a low-fat vegan diet for 20 weeks or to a control group. At the end of the 20 weeks, the individuals in the vegan diet group lost an average of 14 pounds and showed greater improvements in pain measures, as compared with the control group, indicating potential in a plantbased diet intervention for treating diabetic neuropathy. Fruit Helps Prevent Weight Gain A diet rich in whole fruits helps people maintain a healthful weight, according to a review published this month in the Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. Researchers analyzed 17 studies looking at fruit intake and the effects on long-term weight gain in adults. Those who added whole or dried fruit to their diets had a reduced risk for long-term weight gain. Researchers suspect that increasing whole fruit consumption reduces overall energy intake, thus aiding weight loss.

Tasty
A BERRY DELICIOUS TASTE OF SUMMER *** Berries aren't just a tasty treat; they're a healthy one, too. A study reported in the journal Circulation found that "women who ate the most strawberries and blueberries -- three or more servings per week -- were 34 percent less likely to suffer an early heart attack." The findings came from the Nurses Health Study II, which followed some 93,600 women aged 25-42 for 18 years, checking in with them periodically to see what they were eating and how it was affecting their health. The heart health benefits were likely due in part to the presence of anthocyanin, an antioxidant compound found naturally in bright-red fruits like strawberries. Berries offer other health benefits as well. One cup of strawberries provides 140 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C -- more than a medium orange -- and 16 percent of recommended dietary fiber. This fiber content makes strawberries low on the glycemic index, meaning they help slow the body's process of turning the berries into blood sugar. Strawberries also contain more than 25 percent of recommended manganese, which helps process cholesterol. Likewise, a cup of red raspberries has nearly 50 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, and 30 percent of fiber, as well as potassium, magnesium, calcium and vitamin A. Most cookbooks tell you not to wash your berries until you're ready to eat them. One of the cardinal rules of keeping berries from rotting is to leave them unwashed. But by using this simple trick, you can keep your berries fresh for days or even weeks by killing the mold spores that make berries rot.

1. Wash berries in a solution of vinegar and water: In a large bowl, mix 1 cup vinegar and 3 cups water, and immerse the berries. The vinegar will eliminate any pesky mold and bacteria. Rinse berries under cool, running water to remove any traces of vinegar. If you don't have vinegar handy, soak your berries in water between 120 F and 140 F for about 30 seconds, no need to rinse! 2. Moisture is the enemy of fresh berries. Use a salad spinner to wick the water from your berries. Line it with about 3 layers of paper towels to create a pillow for your berries, then spin for about 15 seconds, or until they're completely dry. 3. Don't put the berries back into their original containers. Place them in a sealable container lined with paper towels, and leave the lid partially open to avoid trapping moisture. Remember that seasonal berries can be canned, made into jellies or jams, frozen or dried for tasty and healthful eating throughout the year. MORE COMPOSERS • You may have never heard of Richard Wagner, but you’ve undoubtedly heard his most famous composition from the 1850 opera Lohengrin. The opera’s “Bridal Chorus” has been used at weddings since 1858 when Queen Victoria’s daughter chose the piece for her procession into the church. Today, we call it “Here Comes the Bride.” Another familiar Wagner tune is “Ride of the Valkyries,” which you may know better as “Kill the Wabbit,” a song Elmer Fudd sings in a 1957 Warner Brothers cartoon. History’s longest opera, The Ring Cycle, was also composed by Wagner, a production that takes well over 15 hours to perform. He began the opera in 1848, composing the text over the next four years. However, it took until 1874 for all of the music to be composed. • We almost didn’t have the glorious music of George Frederic Handel, composer of “The Messiah.” His father wanted him to become a lawyer, and prevented George from playing musical instruments. Handel practiced secretly on a clavichord hidden in his home’s attic. Finally, when he was nine, his father heard him playing and allowed him to study music. By the time he was 10, Handel was composing for the organ, oboe, and violin, and a year later began composing church cantatas and chamber music. At 19, he had composed the first of his 50 operas. A stroke at age 52 impaired the movement of his right hand, but after just six weeks, he had fully recuperated. Even a second stroke and complete blindness in the ensuing years couldn’t keep Handel from his love of composition. He continued to write music until his death at 74 in 1759. • Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach fathered 20 children in his two marriages, only 10 of whom survived to adulthood. Five out of his six sons became professional musicians and/or composers. •The story of the head of Franz Josef Haydn is a complicated one. Haydn, who composed more than 100 symphonies, was employed as a court musician by

Hungary’s wealthiest nobility, the Esterhazy family, living on their vast estate outside Vienna. When he died in 1809, Prince Esterhazy buried Haydn in the city’s Hundestrum Cemetery. A pair of individuals (including Esterhazy’s former assistant, Joseph Rosenbaum) believed that the shape and bumps of a skull could give insight into a person’s intelligence and they schemed to steal Haydn’s head. They bribed the cemetery caretaker who broke open the casket and cut off the head. Rosenbaum had it dissected, the brain removed, and the skull bleached. He kept it in a special display case in his home. Eleven years later, when the Prince desired to transfer Haydn’s remains to his estate cemetery, he discovered the head was missing, with only a wig resting in its place. Rosenbaum’s home was searched but his wife hid the skull in bed with her, claiming to be ill. Rosenbaum gave police a different skull from his collection, which was then buried with Haydn. • In 1829, Joseph Rosenbaum died and bequeathed the skull to his fellow thief with the provision that it must be turned over to Vienna’s Society of the Friends of Music. The will was not respected and the head ended up at the University of Vienna. It was not until 1895 that the head came to the Society, where it sat on a pedestal until 1954. Finally, in July of that year, it was given back to the Esterhazy family, who reunited it with Haydn’s remains in a new copper coffin, and laid him to rest in a Mausoleum at Eisenstadt City Church.

Boardwalk vendors say that "dog days" refers to the hot dogs they sell, but I'm skeptical. We've only been calling them "hot dogs" since World War II. I doubt we referred to the summer months as the "Frankfurter Wiener Days" before the war. Anyway, the answer I propose looms a little further off the boardwalk, in waist-deep water, waiting to strike at any moment: These are the "Shark Days of Summer."
THE SHARK DAYS OF SUMMER The term "Dog Days of Summer" is an expression that has fallen out of favor in recent times, and for sports fans this poses a peculiar dilemma. In today's world it's all about building a brand, and these two months -- when kids are out of school, people go on vacation and women wear bikinis -- have always had an image problem. And besides, hipster millennials are not going to use ancient Gregorian-era terms like "July" or "August." OMG LOL There are other reasons to take action. If we don't figure out what to call these days, our sports calendars can get out of whack. It's like trying to catch up on sleep. You can't. Schedules will run into one another, and the next thing you know, the Chicago Blackhawks will be playing hockey in June in places like Tampa Bay, which sounds preposterous, but that's exactly the kind of apocalyptic vision that I feel awaits us if we don't act now. You don't have to slip too far down the slope to see that this could lead to the watering down all of our standards. It would be like calling a team that has won three non-consecutive Stanley Cup championships over a sixyear span a "dynasty" instead of the accurate way we refer to such scenarios in our present day, which is "not a dynasty."
For one, this is the time of year Discovery broadcasts "Shark Week" all month. I'm not quite sure what is left to discover about sharks, but give those producers and scientists credit for giving us what we want, which clearly is taunting sharks. Because I think we have a pretty firm grasp on what sharks do by now. It's not like we're going to suddenly find out something that changes our perception of the sharks. We will never see the scientist turn to the camera and say something like, "Hey! Guess what? Found out something NEW. Turns out, they're huge Judy Garland fans. We caught some hammerheads sneaking off to the Maldives the other night and heard them singing show tunes with a bunch of leopard seals after hours." In addition to the headline-grabbing exploits of the sharks trying to eat newspaper editors off our southern coast, "Shark Tank," starring Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, is enjoying a ratings bonanza on the tube. I am not in any way trivializing the danger of what's been going on -- people have legitimate reason to worry -- but again, I just want to point out the statistics. As scary as it may seem, the odds of being attacked by Mark Cuban are very low. My elevator pitch could probably use a little work, though. Enjoy the rest of your summer, folks! Consumer.ftc.gov has an extensive section on phone scams, including handling pre-recorded calls, unexpected sales calls and, especially, knowing the signs of a scam. The sooner you can identify clues that you're about to be scammed, the sooner you can just hang up without giving out any information.
Phone Scammers Grow More Brazen Scammers would rather have a pipeline right into your home rather than take a chance on mail that might get trashed straight out of the mailbox. Hence the rise in telephone scams. USA.gov has a section on phone scams and fraud that covers a number of the common ones, such as these: * Slamming is when a phone company changes your service without your permission. If you find charges for this on your phone bill, call to insist you be switched back. * Caller ID spoofing makes a phone number show up on your Caller ID that might encourage you to take the call. For example, it might appear that your bank or credit-card company is calling you, and you might be tempted to go ahead and give the personal information the caller asks for. * Cramming is adding charges to your phone bill, likely small ones that you might not notice.
Your cellphone isn't immune to phone scams. If you enable the GPS on your apps, you're essentially letting people know where you are, which makes you vulnerable. Disable the GPS feature. Upgrade plans can be a source of trouble if you don't ask about future upgrade fees when you buy a new phone. Ask lots of questions about frequency of upgrade, potential down payment and phone condition, and read the contract carefully. One-ring scams are one of new ones. Here's how it works: Your cellphone rings once. The calling area code appears to be a domestic one, and the temptation is to call back to see who it was. The problem: The return call actually goes to a pay-per-call international number that might incur fees just for connecting, and more fees every minute. Be sure you're familiar with international area codes that are often tied to scams, such as 809 (Dominican Republic), 284 (British Virgin Islands), 473 (Grenada) and 876 (Jamaica). Don't return any calls unless you know who it is. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Private Insurance or Medicare? According to a Kaiser newsletter, 10,000 of us reach the age of 65 every day. While that's when Medicare starts, it might not be the best option for some of us. If we have marketplace coverage, especially if it is accompanied by the subsidies that make the premiums affordable, we might want to keep that. And we can, as long as we also don't sign up for Medicare -- and as long as we pay full price for our coverage. The option of staying with the marketplace is for those who haven't paid into Medicare for a full 10 years. The rest of us, if we're eligible for free Part A coverage, will no longer get subsidies for our marketplace policies. Even if we want to keep our marketplace plans, it comes with a caveat: The later we enroll in Medicare, the more it costs. We get hit with higher premiums that last for twice as long as the delay for Part A and for the rest of
our lives for Part B. That can amount to 10 percent for every 12 months delay in signing up. We're not given this information in advance; it's up to us to get all the facts about what happens if we don't enroll in Medicare on time, and more importantly, be sure the subsidies stop. When to get Medicare: You're eligible during the three months before you turn 65, your birthday month and the following three months. Your best bet: Get expert advice, especially if you contribute to a Health Savings Account and want to continue that or if you have a high income. Go to medicare.gov and look at the drop-down boxes to find help in your state. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Gasoline can degrade over time, so empty the mower's tank and fill it with fresh gas (some older mowers use a gas/oil mix). Check the oil. If it's old or contaminated with grass particles, change it. Replace the mower's air filter. Change the spark plug. Clean the undercarriage thoroughly, removing clumps of grass and debris.
A: A tune-up can really help your lawnmower's performance. While the main issue here may be that the blades need sharpening, it's a good idea to check other components to make sure they're all OK. You might even want to schedule a mid-season check up, particularly if you're having to mow every week or have a lot of yard to cut.
How you mow could be a factor, too. Are you mowing first thing in the morning to beat the summer heat? Wet grass forms clumps that can clog the mower, and mowing while it's still damp with dew can damage the grass, too. Wait a few hours past sunup so the lawn dries out a bit. And don't mow the grass right after it rains or has been watered.
Letting your lawn grow too high between mowings also can cause grass to clump, slowing or even stalling the engine. Learn the recommended mowing height for your type of grass, and set your blade height accordingly. Mow often enough so that only the top third of the grass is trimmed away. TIP: After each mowing session, disconnect the spark plug wire (to prevent the mower from accidentally starting), tip it and remove any clumps of grass from the undercarriage using a hose or a sturdy brush -- never your hand. Send your home tips and questions to ask@thisisahammer.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
