by Janet Spencer In 1796, the first U.S. patent for a piano was issued to James McLean of New Jersey, for “an improvement in piano fortes.” Although there were many patents on improved designs for pianos over the years, this was the first piano patent awarded in the U.S. Come along with Tidbits as we play the piano! * SAVE OUR ENVIROMENT

• The piano’s ancestors include the harp, the hammered dulcimer, and the psaltery, which is a box-type instrument with strings that were either plucked or bowed. When a new design allowed strings to be plucked when keys were depressed, the harpsichord was born and it quickly became a popular instrument in the 1600s. From there came similar but slightly different instruments: the clavichord and the spinet, which led to the invention of the piano. • On a harpsicord, the strings are plucked when the musician’s fingers hit the keys. It has a higher pitch than the piano, the notes cannot be sustained, and there’s no way to vary how loudly the instrument plays. The piano, by contrast, has strings that are hit by hammers, meaning the musician can play either softly or loudly. “Piano” is the Italian word for soft and “forte” is the Italian word for loud. The piano’s original name was “pianoforte” meaning “soft/loud” and was then shortened to just piano.

PIANO (continued):
NEW DEVELOPMENTS • An Italian man named Bartolomeo Cristoforti built the first practical piano in 1700. He originally called it a “gravicembalo col piano e forte” (the “great harpsichord with soft and loud capabilities”). Three Cristofori pianos survive today. They were made in the 1720s, making them the oldest pianos in existence. • The piano replaced the harpsichord in popularity by the end of the 1700s. Piano building began in America in 1775. The Industrial Revolution made high-quality piano wire readily available. In England, John Broadwood developed machines to manufacture pianos, reducing the cost. By 1870, Steinway & Sons were in business. By 1911, there were 301 piano builders in the U.S. Production peaked in the 1920s and declined during the Great Depression. • Today, there are approximately 15 piano manufacturers in the United States, but more pianos are built in Japan than any other country. • The piano has the largest range of volume of any acoustic instrument, as well as the widest range of notes, from below the lowest note of the double bassoon to above the top note of the piccolo. It allows more notes to be played simultaneously than any other instrument and is the only instrument (aside from the organ) that can play both the melody and the accompaniment at the same time. It’s also the largest instrument. The piano’s design has not changed for nearly 100 years.
IT’S A FACT • Pianist Arthur Rubinstein was in the lobby of the concert hall, watching the capacity crowd come in to hear him play when the ticket agent put out the “Sold Out” sign. The agent, mistaking Rubinstein for a member of the audience, informed the pianist that there were no seats available. “May I be seated at the piano?” he asked.

PIANO PEDALS • Why do most pianos have three pedals? When you hit a piano key, a hammer hits the strings. The strings ring until the key is let up, when a damper falls on the strings and stops the sound. When the right pedal is depressed, the strings are not dampened and continue to ring, giving a rich resonating tone. Each piano hammer normally strikes three strings for a full tone, but when the left pedal is pressed, the hammers shift position so that they fall on only two of the three strings for a softer tone. When the middle pedal is pressed, it will sustain the notes of the keys that are down when the pedal is pressed, but no other notes that are played afterwards, so a pianist can play rumbling notes at the bottom of the scale and have them sustained while playing tinkly high notes at the top of the scale. • When you soft-pedal something, you are referring to the pedal on a piano which is used to mute the tone. When you pull out all the stops, you are acting like an organist who pulls out all the knobs, or stops, in order to use all the organ pipes.
• Musician Max Reger played piano in Schubert’s “Trout” quintet in a concert and later received a basket of trout from an admirer. He wrote the fan a letter thanking him for the gift, and casually mentioned that in his next concert he was going to perform Haydn’s “Minuet of the Ox.” • Russian composer Anton Rubinstein would often sleep late. His wife devised a scheme to get him out of bed. She would go up to the piano above his bedroom and loudly play unresolved chords. Rubinstein, who couldn’t stand unresolved chords, would jump out of bed and rush up to the piano to play the final chords, and his wife would sneak into his bedroom and make up the bed. • Russian pianist Vladimir Pachmann enjoyed teasing audiences. A favorite trick was to play endlessly with the piano stool before starting to play. He would twist it up then lower it, adjusting and readjusting it until the audience became impatient. Then he would rush offstage and return with a large book, placing it on the stool. He would settle down, ready to begin the recital when suddenly he’d stand up one more time, rip a single page from the book— and then begin to play.
NOTED COMPOSERS * In the mid 19th century "Lisztomania" swept across Europe. The reception that virtuoso hungarian pianist and composer Franz Liszt enjoyed can be described only as hysterical. Women fought over his silk handkerchiefs and velvet gloves, which they ripped to shreds as souvenirs. This atmosphere was fuelled in great part by the artist's mesmeric personality and stage presence. Many witnesses later testified that Liszt's playing raised the mood of audiences to a level of mystical ecstasy © wikipedia. • Mozart challenged Haydn to play an impossible piece of music which resulted in hands at both ends of the piano and a note to be played in the middle, which Haydn could not do. But Mozart triumphantly bobbed down and used his nose to strike the key. • “I always make sure that the lid over the keyboard is open before I start to play.” -Artur Schnabel, Australian pianist, when asked the secret of piano playing.
• When the cat belonging to composer Domenico Scarlatti walked across his piano keys, it inspired him to write “Cat’s Fugue.” • Polish pianist Josef Hofmann walked on stage at a concert, waited for the applause to die down, sat blankly at his piano for a moment, then leaned over and asked a woman in the first row, “May I see your program for a moment? I have forgotten what comes first!” • Oscar Levant was giving a piano concert when, during the middle of the piece, a phone began ringing very loudly offstage. Levant continued to play but the phone kept ringing. Finally he paused, turned to the audience, and said, “If that’s for me, tell them I’m busy.” Once he was annoyed when a woman arrived late for a concert and began walking down the center aisle to find her seat as he was playing. He began to play in time to her steps. She walked quickly, he played quickly. She hesitated, he hesitated. She slowed down, he slowed down. By the time she reached her seat, the audience was hysterical.

HEINRICH STEINWEG • Heinrich Steinweg was born in Germany in 1797. After being orphaned at the age of 15, he went to work as a carpenter. Later he apprenticed to an organ builder, where he discovered a natural talent for music. Soon he became the organist for the local church. • He began to build instruments in his kitchen, doing it secretly to avoid trouble with the local union guild. He started with zithers and guitars before moving on to pianos. In 1935 he built a square piano as a wedding gift for his bride, and a baby grand he constructed in 1836 is now on display at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. • Because of the unstable political situation in Germany, Steinweg sent one of his sons over to the U.S. to scope out possibilities. A year later, he followed with his wife and five more sons, leaving one son behind in Germany to continue the family piano-building business there. He and his sons worked in various piano factories in New York until they were able to establish their own company in 1853. • At this point Heinrich Steinweg changed his name to Henry Steinway, and called his company Steinway & Sons. Just two years later, one of their pianos earned them first prize at the New York Industrial Fair. This was followed by more awards. By 1862, Steinway pianos had received more than 35 medals. Composers Franz Liszt and Anton Rubinstein swore that Steinways were the best pianos available. Steinway’s fame spread. • In 1866 Steinway invented and constructed the first upright piano. That’s also the year they founded Steinway Hall in New York City. The acoustics were excellent and the theater seated 2000 people. This served as New York’s premiere concert hall until Carnegie Hall opened in 1891.
• Anyone attending an event at Steinway Hall had to pass through the lobby where a variety of Steinway pianos were diplayed. This increased demand for the pianos, and they sold an extra 400 pianos the first year alone. • The company moved to its current location in Astoria, New York, and built Steinway Village. Virtually its own town, Steinway Village had its own foundries, factory, post office, parks and housing for employees. With a workforce of 350 men, production increased from 500 to 1,800 pianos per year. • The Steinway company was granted 127 patents for improvements in the piano over the years. By the time Henry died in 1871, leaving his sons to carry on, Steinway pianos were known as the world’s finest. • By 1900 the company was producing 3,500 pianos a year. Steinway & Co. presented their 100,000th grand piano to President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903, and in 1938, the Steinway’s 300,000th piano was given to President Franklin Roosevelt. It still occupies the East Room in the White House. • During World War II, Steinway built 2,436 special models called the “Victory Vertical” or “G.I. Piano.” It was a small piano that four men could lift, painted olive drab, and designed to be carried aboard ships or dropped by parachute from an airplane to bring music to the soldiers. • Until his death in 2008 at the age of 93, Henry Z. Steinway, the great-grandson of the Steinway founder, still worked for Steinway. He was the last Steinway family member to be president of the company. • Steinway & Sons crafts approximately 2,500 pianos a year worldwide not only in Astoria, New York, but also in Hamburg, Germany. Each Steinway takes about a year to build. Prices start at $50,000 and a Steinway never loses its value.

Beginning in the late 19th century, Arts & Crafts became one of the most influential movements of all time. It was a radically new approach, triggered partly by resistance to many of the items displayed in the Great Exhibition of 1851, Victorian wares that were ornate and artificial. William Morris was an idealist and romantic who, along with John Ruskin and Edward Burne-Jones, resisted the Victorian era, inspired instead by the Medieval guild system with its traditional craft techniques that reflected the dignity and prestige of the artisan. In fact, Morris had a simple rule that helped define the Arts & Crafts movement, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.” This same rule could certainly apply to the stylish new book by Judith Miller. It is useful, quite beautiful and deserves to be in every home. Miller, an international expert in the field of antiques and collectibles, has written more than 100 books. “Arts & Crafts” is sure to be one of her most celebrated. She
has gathered more than 1,000 high-quality photographs and combined them seamlessly with an accessible text to provide a clear assessment of the Arts & Crafts movement, documenting everything from metal ware to glass, textiles, jewelry, books and posters. She also features profiles of key designs, such as the Stickley Brothers, Liberty & Co., Tiffany Studios, George Ohr, Rockwood, Newcomb and Ramsden & Carr. As might be expected, Miller’s book is an absolute celebration of the Arts & Crafts movement. This book includes a pictorial design directory with price ranges and a wealth of essential information for collectors and enthusiasts. As a new generation of collectors are discovering the beauty and truth of the Arts & Crafts period, Miller’s book is also timely. © 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD -- We have good news and bad news for "Downton Abbey" fans. The sixth season of the award-winning British drama has been filmed and is ready for its January premiere. The bad news is that this will be the last season for "Downton Abbey." The fifth season was watched by more than 25 million viewers, and in its run received 51 Emmy nominations, winning 11, along with three Golden Globe awards.

Why would a show that's so popular and award-worthy end its run? Apparently, the actors were signed up for only six seasons. Now that most of them have become stars working in other mediums, the show can't pay the salaries they'd have to for them to re-sign. So enjoy it while you can.

• HOLLYWOOD • HALLANDALE • AVENTURA • SUNNY ISLES *** Melissa McCarthy is on her way to superstardom. In 2011 she received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress in "Bridesmaids" and her first Emmy nomination for "Mike & Molly." She took home the Emmy that year and was nominated the next three years. "Bridesmaids" made $288 million, followed by "The Heat," co-starring Sandra Bullock, which earned $230 million. Her next film, "Tammy," which she produced with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, was directed by her husband, Ben Falcone. It cost $20 million and earned $100 million. Then she starred with Bill Murray in "St. Vincent," which cost $13 million and earned $55 million. But pairing her with Jason Statham in "Spy" was pure genius. At a cost of $65 million, they hit the jackpot, raking in $230 million so far. Her next film, "Michelle Darnell," with Kristen Bell, "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage, Kathy Bates and Margo Martindale, is being produced by Melissa and Ben, as well as Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy, will hit
screens April 8. We'll see her in "Ghostbusters," with SNL stars Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon, out July 22. As if that wasn't enough to keep her busy, she and husband Ben are shooting a pilot, "Friends With Melissa," inspired by watching fellow Groundlings (an Improv comedy group) who go on to star in blockbuster comedies and win Oscars while they're busy writing for children's television. McCarthy will appear in the pilot, and Falcone probably will direct.

Q: I noticed during some of last season's "New Girl" that Zooey Deschanel wore baggier clothes than usual, and was often carrying something in front of her stomach. Is she pregnant? -- Julie T., via email A: Zooey was indeed pregnant while shooting quite a bit of season four of her Fox sitcom, however the writers decided not to write her pregnancy into the storyline. The actress gave birth to a girl Aug. 3. When the birth was announced, it was also revealed that she and fiance Jacob Pechenik had secretly wed June 21 in Texas. *** Q: Can you give me any "Game of Thrones" news? I'm going through some serious withdrawals. -- Donnie W., via email A: Legendary actor Max von Sydow, who can be seen in December in "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens," is slated to take over the role of the Three-Eyed Raven (played in season four by Struan Rodger) for season six. His character will teach Bran Stark how to use his supernatural gifts. In more "GoT" casting news, "Deadwood" alumnus Ian McShane will play an undisclosed role in the new season, and it's been reported that it will be a key role, although, like Max, he won't get a lot of screen time. Q: I was so shocked to read that Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton are divorcing. Please say it ain't so! -- Mara W., West Palm Beach, Fla. A: I am sorry to report that the couple has indeed called it quits. Apparently it had been coming for a while, because just hours after announcing their split, their divorce was finalized. Rumors will always abound as to why celebrity couples part ways, and I won't get into the innuendo and tabloid fodder. All I have to say is that I wish the country couple the best.
It seems to be the summer of supercouple splits. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck announced their intent to divorce after 10 years of marriage; Gwen Stefani filed for divorce from husband Gavin Rossdale after 13 years; and Reba McEntire and Narvel Blackstock are divorcing after 26 years. Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez apparently are set to divorce after two years of marriage; however, as of this writing, the couple hadn't made an official announcement. Meanwhile, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are facing yet another round of divorce rumors -- this seems to happen once a year -- however, Jada denies their validity, telling "American Way" magazine: "Every year there's a new [rumor], and I'm like, 'Here we go. Get ready. Are ya holdin' on tight?' "Marriages go through shifts. And relationships go through shifts because in life, things shift. So people are automatically like, 'What's going on? They must be getting a divorce.' Well, no. But when people feel those shifts and there's a mystery, they have to fill it with something." *** Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. * You may be forgiven if you've never heard of Violet Jessup, who lived a remarkably fortunate (or unfortunate, depending on your point of view) life. At the age of 23, Jessup was serving as a steward on the RMS Olympic when the luxury liner collided with a British warship and sank. She survived to continue her profession, taking a position on the RMS Titanic less than two years later, in 1912. That didn't end well, as we all know, but once again, Jessup survived. Amazingly, she continued her oceangoing career, and during World War I she served as a nurse aboard the Hospital Ship Britannic. When the Britannic struck a mine and sank, Jessup was pulled underwater and hit her head on the keel of the ship. Despite her injuries, she was rescued once again. Three maritime disasters didn't seem to faze her, though; she remained a stewardess for the rest of her career. * In 2007, researchers using Google Earth discovered the world's largest beaver dam. Located in the wilderness of northern Canada, the dam is more than a half- mile long at 2,790 feet; experts estimate the structure was started in the mid-1970s. * If you're a resident of Ohio, please keep in mind that in that state, it is illegal to get undressed in front of a man's portrait. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter was diagnosed with Lyme disease. I'm from Michigan, in a county with open spaces and lots of animals. Probably a tick caused it. Are there doctors who treat this disease in our area? Lots of people in this area have it. -- P.A.
SHUFFLING OF FEET RAISES RED FLAG DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 85 and in good health, except for dizzy spells. It was said that I have vertigo, but I do not believe this to be the case. Meclizine is of no help. The symptoms are worst when I close my eyes: When I do, I feel like may fall. Other symptoms are shuffling of feet, dizziness and dizziness on standing too quickly. Is it possible I have Meniere's disease? -- A.T.H. ANSWER: "Dizziness" is a very nonspecific term. It can mean vertigo, which is a sensation of movement when there isn't any; lightheadedness, such as we can all get sometimes when standing too quickly; or a disorientation that can happen when blood sugar is low. Meniere's disease is a cause of true vertigo, often with ringing in the ears and hearing loss. Shuffling of the feet is a red flag for Parkinson's disease. Dizziness is a common if not universal symptom in people with Parkinson's. However, only a thorough history and physical exam can make the diagnosis. If your regular doctor hasn't been able to help, you might see a neurologist, who is an expert in making diagnoses about neurologic symptoms such as dizziness. There are many possible causes. The booklet on vertigo explains this disruptive condition in detail and outlines its treatment. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 801W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
ANSWER: Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria, Borrelia burgdoferi, which in turn is spread by the blacklegged deer tick, Ixodes scapularis. I checked with the health department in Michigan and found that there has never been a reported case from your county. That doesn't mean it's impossible -- you are not far from some counties in western Michigan where Lyme disease is known to be present. It's possible your daughter traveled, or it's possible she is the first case in your county. Most cases of Lyme disease start with a characteristic rash, sometimes with fever or other symptoms. It can be treated effectively, in the vast majority of cases in early stage, with oral antibiotics, such as doxycycline. An infectious-disease expert can help confirm the diagnosis and make sure she is properly treated. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about the health benefits of nuts. Does roasting them matter? A friend says they need to be raw. -- A. ANSWER: The data showing improved heart disease rates in people who eat nuts looked both at raw nuts and roasted. Many roasted nuts include more salt than you want, and some roast in unhealthy oils. Look for dry-roasted and low or no salt. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Yogurt Does Not Improve Health
Red and Processed Meats Increase Risk for Type 2 Diabetes Various components found in red and processed meat products increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes, according to a review published in Metabolism: Clinical and Experimental. Saturated fat, high sodium levels, carcinogens, nitrates, heme iron, and other compounds in red and processed meats may all contribute to decreased insulin sensitivity and other risk factors for type 2 diabetes. While the study calls for more research on specific mechanisms, the authors suspect some combination of these components may increase risk for disease. Preventive measures suggested include increased exercise and a high-fiber, low-fat diet.
Plant-Based Diets Best for Breast Cancer Survival A plant-based diet may prove best following the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, according to a review published in The Permanente Journal. Researchers investigated long-term lifestyle choices and their impact on health risk factors such as heart disease, bone health, and obesity that influence overall survival. As the shift to chronic disease management for cancer develops, longterm therapies increasingly include lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise to increase adherence and effectiveness. Several studies showed that a whole-foods, plant-based diet lowered BMIs and improved breast cancer survival by eliminating foods that promoted cardiovascular disease and cancer cell growth. This article suggests that a wellness index consisting of healthful
Daily yogurt consumption does not offer any improvement in quality of life, according to a study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Researchers followed 4,445 participants as part of the ENRICA (Nutrition and Cardiovascular Risk in Spain) study for 3.5 years and monitored their diets. Those who consumed one or more servings of yogurt daily did not show any improvement in physical or mental health when compared to those who consumed less or no yogurt. The study authors hope their findings will better inform policy makers who assess health claims made by different food industries.
Vegetarian Diets Increase Metabolism Vegetarian diets are associated with higher metabolic rates, according to a study published in Nutrients. Researchers monitored the diets and metabolic rates for 24 vegetarian and 26 non-vegetarian participants. Biochemical analyses also monitored inflammatory markers associated with diet. Vegetarians lowered their cholesterol levels, had higher levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines, and had higher metabolic rates, compared with non-vegetarians. This study complements other research studies that suggest that nutrition plays a larger role than exercise in maintaining healthful metabolic rates. Tasty
Snap to It! I'm a huge fan of green beans, and with the abundant summer crop available this year, I decided to learn more about one of my favorite vegetables. Green beans also are known as string beans because of a string that runs down the length of the pod. Modern varieties seldom have the string anymore and are now known as snap beans. Snap beans are picked at a younger, immature stage. The name comes from the snapping sound the beans make when they are twisted between your fingers. They are the least expensive, can be eaten raw and are at their tasty best from summer to fall. Green beans are selected before the tender beans in the pod mature. Actually, green beans aren't really a bean at all. They are nutritionally more comparable to other pod vegetables such as okra and belong to the same family as shell beans such as pinto beans, black beans and kidney beans. They are all referred to as "common beans," probably because they all derived from a common Peruvian bean ancestor. Migrating Indian tribes spread common beans throughout South and Central America, then Spanish explorers returning from voyages to the New World introduced them to Europe around the 16th century. Traders of Spanish and Portuguese descent spread the beans to
other parts of the world.
utes. Drain and rinse the green beans under cold water.
Greens beans are low in sodium and very low in saturated fat and cholesterol. They are a good source of protein, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B-6, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and copper. Green beans also are a very good source of dietary fiber, vitamins A, C and K, folate and manganese.
2. In a large serving bowl, place the green beans, baby spinach leaves and the Summer Salsa. Season with the lemon pepper and toss gently to combine. Scatter the toasted almonds on top of the salad. Serve immediately.
Greens beans are relatively inexpensive and easy to find locally. The United States produces 60 percent of all commercially grown green beans, especially the states of Illinois, Michigan, New York, Oregon and Wisconsin. If you're unable to obtain fresh green beans, you still can get many valuable nutrients from ones that have been frozen or canned.

VICTOR BORGE • Victor Borge was born Borge Rosenbaum in 1909 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father was a musician and his mother was a pianist, and Victor followed in their footsteps, starting out as a classical pianist but finding he also had a gift for humor. By the 1930s he was one of Denmark’s most popular performers. • When the Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden. Instead of going home to Denmark, he escaped to Finland and then traveled to America on the last neutral ship to make it out of Finland. He arrived in New York City in 1940 with $20 to his name. • He didn’t speak a word of English but learned the language by going to the movies. One of his first gigs was at a large club in Florida, for which he was to be paid one dollar for each member of the audience. Three hundred guests saw his show. When it came time to be paid, Borge pointed out to the management that the club’s 40 waiters had also greatly enjoyed his performance. He got $340. • The gimmick that launched Borge to fame almost immediately in the U.S. involved him reading perfectly normal sentences, while making different sounds for every punctuation mark. In 1941 he performed his gig to warm up the radio audience for the Bing Crosby show, and ended up being a regular on the Bing Crosby show for the next 56 weeks. The following year he was proclaimed “the best new radio performer of the year” and later had his own radio show on NBC.

He made a habit of falling off piano stools, getting tangled up in the sheet music, and completely missing the piano keyboard with his hands. He played elaborate renditions of “Happy Birthday” in the style of Mozart, Brahms, Wagner, and Beethoven with great wit. • He would sometimes begin a performance by asking if there were any kids in the audience. He would say, “We do have some children in here; that means I can’t do the second half in the nude. I’ll wear the tie. (pause) The long one. (pause) The very long one, yes.” • Borge would play a strange-sounding piano tune from sheet music, looking increasingly confused. He would then turn the sheet upside down, and then play the actual tune. When his energetic playing would cause him to fall off the piano bench, he would open the seat lid, take out the two ends of an automotive seat belt, and buckle himself onto the bench. After finishing the song, he would stand to take a bow, but the bench would be lifted up because he forgot to unbuckle the seat belt. • The theater program always listed 19 numbers he was to perform. They were: 1) Frankly 2) We 3) Don’t 4) Know 5) What 6) Mr. Borge 7) Will 8) Do 9) But 10) We’re 11) Sure 12) He’ll 13) Keep 14) Us 15) Posted 16) From 17) Time 18) To 19) Time. • “Would you like a picture?” he would ask fans approaching with a camera. He would then pull a snapshot out of his pocket and hand it over to them. • He wrote a book called “My Favorite Intermissions” published in 1971.
• His one-man show “Comedy in Music” ran for 849 performances on Broadway, setting a record for a one-man show and earning him a slot in the Guinness Book of World Records. • Victor Borge continued to tour until his last days, performing up to 60 times per year when he was 90 years old. Borge died in Connecticut at the age of 91, after more than 75 years of entertaining. He died peacefully in his sleep a day after returning from a concert in Denmark. He earned his reputation as “the comedian of the keyboard” and “the clown prince of Denmark.”

Universal laws of physics teach us that for every action there must be an equal and opposite reaction. American exceptionalism requires more than that, however. We like to turn things upside down, too. So we made sure that July was the month that had actual crying in baseball. It happened when a shortstop learned during the middle of an inning, with millions of people watching, that he had been traded. And get this -- he was crying because he DIDN'T want to leave the Mets.
DON'T CRY
The guy who wants to be our next commander-in-chief insulted an American war hero and POW, and the only military experience he had was time served as an owner of the New Jersey Generals. Then he surged in the polls.
On Friday, July 31, 2015, the world -- America certainly -was a very different place. We were a world that seemed to have lost its heroes.
We passed toy gun legislation that is tougher than our actual gun laws because we're afraid our kids pretending to play cops and robbers may actually get shot and killed by a real cop who may mistake him as a real robber.
The month had started off reasonably well. Serena Williams won Wimbledon, one month after winning the French Open. Zack Johnson won the 144th Open Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland. The women's national soccer team won the World Cup in decisive fashion. We even won the Pan-American Games.
We learned that we have dentists in America more lethal than adult male lions. The King of the Beasts is now thought to be friendlier and safer than some Midwestern oral hygienists. Time was, dentists used to just badger us into flossing. Maybe now, we'll start to take that with a little more seriousness.
Off the field, South Carolina finally ceded the Civil War, and thanks to NASA, we now know more about Pluto than we know about Idaho and South Dakota. Good news was coming out of the technology sector and job market.
Then, everything changed on a Saturday. The first weekend in August took what we thought had left us -- the hero -- and made things right. Wilmer Flores will now forever be remembered as the King for a Day in Queens when the trade falls through, and he responds by hitting the game-winning, walk-off home run.
Then we fell down the stairs. Shootings in movie theaters. Routine traffic stops turned into horror flicks, speed traps became death traps, and a campus policeman in Cincinnati had more firepower than Marines at our recruiting centers in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The guy who used to teach me Picture Pages while he lectured Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids, who introduced me to New Coke, pudding on a stick and Lisa Bonet, admitted he's a serial rapist.
And out of Brazil, a bantamweight named Rhonda, and from inside New Jersey, where a horse with a misspelled name answered the clarion call: You can still have sports heroes. Don't cry. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Refinance to a lower interest rate -- and send an extra amount each month toward the principal.
Pay Off Your Mortgage Early If you're a homeowner, the monthly mortgage payment is likely your biggest expense. Paying off the mortgage years early can open other avenues in your finances, especially for retirement or sending a child to college. It's not easy to clear a large debt like a mortgage, but there are steps you can take to reach your goal. • Make an extra payment toward the principal every month. Go online to Bankrate.com and look for the mortgage loan payoff calculator. It will show you the result of putting even an extra small amount on your principal each month. Note the date at the bottom that shows when the mortgage will be paid off, depending how much extra you pay each month. Ideally that will motivate you to consider adding larger amounts. • Round up the amount you pay. If you're truly short on cash, even rounding to the next $10 increment will help. See the round-up repayment calculator at HSH.com.
• Refinance with a shorter term -- for instance, cutting your 30year mortgage down to a 15-year mortgage. You will, of course, have larger payments but with a lower interest rate. The caveat is that you'll be stuck with those larger payments should something happen. Instead, consider refinancing with another 30-year mortgage, but send in a larger fixed amount every month. You'll need to be disciplined, but should you need extra cash in an emergency or in the event of income loss, you'll have that breathing room and the smaller payment. • If you get paid every two weeks, arrange with your lender to make biweekly payments. That ends up being 13 payments in a year. Ask about fees associated with biweekly payments. • If you're about to buy a house, and especially if you have excellent credit, you might be surprised at how much a lender is willing to give you. Draw the line and remember that you're the one who will be responsible for paying it back. Reduce the amount you're willing to borrow. Beware: Read the fine print of your mortgage documents to be sure you won't be hit with a prepayment penalty for paying off your loan early. If you're about to take out a loan for a house, insist that there not be a prepayment penalty clause. If there is, go elsewhere for your loan. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Hospital Association even says, "There's a risk of oversimplifying the complexity of quality care." In time, the site also will rate hospitals based on outcomes and safety, but for now, the patient appraisals and the Medicare reports are what's available. To see how your hospital compares, go online to www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare.
For this year, Social Security checks rose 1.7 percent, and we thought that was low. In 2014, it was 1.5 percent. The year before it was 1.7, and in 2012 it was a whopping 3.6 percent. While it looks like we won't get a COLA increase for 2016, keep your fingers crossed. The final numbers won't be in until October. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Social Security Increase Unlikely Picking a Hospital Medicare's online site Hospital Compare now uses stars to rate hospitals. This is good -- and bad -- when it comes to judging a hospital. The Good: At least there is another tool to help guide you toward selecting the right hospital. The star ratings look at things like pain control and communication with the patient. The Bad: The star method is based on the appraisals of patients who've been in hospitals. If a patient has had a bad experience, it might have nothing to do with the care he or she received. Patients who are surveyed are chosen randomly, and they're not all Medicare recipients. (What would be interesting is seeing a comparison of the results of patients on Medicare versus those who have private insurance. Is our care different from those with another insurance plan?) Hospitals, of course, aren't thrilled about these star surveys, saying that a difference of only a point can move a hospital down from three stars to two ... or down to one. They also point to the fact that it's just patient opinion that makes up the rating, and that there's much more to a hospital than a patient's experience. The American
It's nearly a done deal: We likely won't see an increase in Social Security benefits in 2016. So sayeth the gurus who know about these things. Part of their reasoning is the Consumer Price Index that was issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics for the year period ending in June, in which all expenditures rose only 0.1 percent. Broken down into the categories we seniors care about, there's a different story: * All food: up 1.8 percent * Prescription drugs: up 3.3 percent * Shelter: up 3 percent What apparently balanced the numbers, allowing them to claim only a 0.1 percent overall increase, was energy: It fell 15 percent. That includes fuel oil, gas, firewood, electricity and everything else related to energy. (Did anyone tell the electric company about that? Or the gas supplier?) The AARP has gone to bat for us again, saying that seniors don't spend the same way as others who also are included in the price index. We spend more on health care, for example. (The good news is that if the Cost of Living Adjustment doesn't increase, neither will the $104.90 Part B Medicare premium.)

Most kitchen floors don't get that level of respect, but linoleum floors do hold up over the years if cared for properly. Much of the yellowing happens in the wax or other type of finish sitting on top of the linoleum.
Sprucing Up Old Linoleum Floor Q: The linoleum floor in our kitchen is yellowing badly. I like the pattern, which came with the house, but can't find the same thing at the flooring store. Is there a way to clean and brighten up the floor rather than replace it? -- Joe T., via e-mail A: You can spruce up old linoleum flooring with a bit of effort. While you might not be able to get rid of all the yellowing, some elbow grease and some common household ingredients can really improve its overall look. Linoleum cleaning was the bane of my early years in property maintenance, many years ago. Mornings started with a specific regime of cleaning, waxing and buffing floors that had been laid down at least 20 years earlier. They also were completely stripped and rewaxed on a regular basis. The end result: a durable floor that survived decades of daily stampedes by office workers.
That's different from yellowing that occurs in vinyl floors (which can be easily identified because their patterns are printed on the top but don't carry through, while linoleum colors or patterns show through the entire tile to the bottom). Finishes are typically incorporated into the vinyl (hence the old marketing term, "no wax floors"), so yellowing and ground-in dirt can be harder to deal with. To clean linoleum, you'll need a mild cleaner (like dish detergent) and a soft sponge or cloth to start. Nylon scrubbing pads and scrubbing powder (like Spic 'n Span) are the next level, and are typically used to remove wax finish from linoleum. Ammonia, likewise, breaks down the wax, making it easier to remove. Test these in a small, out of the way area to make sure they're effective and don't scratch or dull the linoleum. Apply mild soap onto the test spot (or pour onto a soft cloth and apply). Immediately scrub with a nylon scrubber pad. Wipe away the suds and compare to the surrounding linoleum. Next, test another spot by dabbing ammonia onto it and letting it sit for several minutes. Wipe away using a soft cloth or scrub a bit before wiping away, then compare.
Following the tests, scrub the entire floor using the method that works best. If using an ammonia-based cleaner or plain ammonia, work in small sections and keep the area well-ventilated. If your kitchen is large, consider renting a floor cleaner/buffer. A scrubbing pad attachment will strip away the finish and any built-up dirt and residue. Next, clean the floor using a mild cleaner and cool water, then rinse well. Tackle any remaining yellowed spots with a scrubbing pad and more cleaner, and rinse. Because scrubbing usually strips away the old finish, you'll need to refinish the linoleum. Fortunately this can be done pretty easily. Purchase a quality liquid floor wax (specifically for linoleum floors) at your home-improvement or flooring store. Apply evenly to a dry floor using a soft cloth or rag mop (one you won't use on anything else). Let dry completely, and then add a second coat. If you rented a floor cleaner/buffer, buff the newly waxed linoleum once the second coat is dry. Wait at least a full day before washing the floor with cool water and mild soap. HOME TIP: Ammonia softens and dulls linoleum finishes and vinyl floors, so avoid using ammonia-based products for everyday floor cleaning. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com.
