ADVERTISING SLOGANS by Kathy Wolfe All companies know the importance of advertising and product recognition. This week, Tidbits investigates some clever slogans that have caught our attention over the years. • Who hasn’t sung along to the “Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat” jingle? The first commercial featuring the clang of a cable car aired in 1959, launching the success of the small Golden Grain Macaroni Company. The product was based on the family recipe of the founders, the Domenico’s. There were not many packaged side dishes available in the late 1950s and Rice-A-Roni was an immediate hit. It became so successful that when Golden Grain sold out to the Quaker Oats Company in 1986, the price tag was $275 million.

• The Clairol company was started up in 1931 by two Americans who had been traveling in France and observed hair-coloring preparations there. Sold strictly to salons for 25 years, in 1956, an at-home product was introduced with its slogan “Does she or doesn’t she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure.” Within 6 years, 70% of American women were coloring their hair. The company has had several catchy phrases over the years, including 1965’s “The closer he gets, the better you look” and the 1960s slogan, “Is it true blondes have more fun?” • “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is” is one of the most recognizable ad slogans of all time. The effervescent antacid Alka-Seltzer made its debut in 1931 as a remedy for aches, pains, inflammation, fever, heartburn, indigestion, and a number of other maladies. The character “Speedy” (signifying speedy relief) was introduced in 1951 and was used until the mid-1960s. The company had another successful catchphrase in 1971 when a man suffering from severe indigestion said, “Try it, you’ll like it,” followed in 1972 with “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.” Alka-Seltzer’s competition Rolaids countered with “How do you spell relief?”

ADVERTISING SLOGANS (continued):

• Credit card companies are well-known for reminding us how much we need them. In 1975, American Express introduced its “Don’t leave home without it” campaign, featuring Oscar-Award-winning actor Karl Malden. Various celebrities asked TV viewers, “Do you know me?” in another American Express ad. In 2004, the company updated its slogan to “My life. My card.” Visa’s catchphrase was, “It’s everywhere you want to be,” initiated in 1985. (Visa spends about $500 million each year on advertising around the world!) MasterCard was not to be left out, and in 1997 originated, “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s MasterCard.” Capital One followed up with, “What’s in your wallet?” • What’s the best part of waking up? According to Folgers, it’s their coffee in your cup! The company, in business since 1850, featured the Swedish neighbor Mrs. Olson in their ads from 1965 to 1986, who told us that Folgers was “mountain grown, the richest kind of coffee.” Another coffee vendor, Maxwell House, has one of the longest-used slogans, “Good to the Last Drop,” created in 1917. • Founded in 1922 by a retired farmer turned insurance salesman, State Farm is currently #41 on the Fortune 500 list of largest companies. They process almost 35,000 claims per day. Pop star Barry Manilow composed their “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there” jingle in 1971.

the Band-Aid in 1920, came up with the idea when his wife Josephine regularly injured herself while performing housekeeping and cooking tasks. Dickson, who worked for Johnson & Johnson, was looking for an easier way to bandage up her wounds than cotton and wrapping. Sales were just $3,000 that first year, but in 1961, the year of Dickson’s death, sales of Band-Aids were $30,000,000. • In 1973, as the feminist movement was gaining momentum, a young 23-year-old copywriter named

Ilon Specht came up with the phrase “Because I’m worth it” for the L’Oreal cosmetics company. Still in use today, it’s recognized by 80% of women. • Where did our favorite candy M&Ms get its name? The little chocolates with a candy shell were introduced by the Mars Company in 1941 as a treat that allowed soldiers to carry chocolate without it melting. The two “M”s stand for Forrest Mars, son of the Mars founder, and Bruce Murrie, who was the son of the Hershey Chocolate president, who owned a 20% share in the product. M&Ms famous “melts in your mouth, not in your hand” slogan was trademarked in 1954. • After decades of using “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking” to describe the durability of their watches, Timex replaced the phrase with one they felt updated their image. The 1950s phrase was updated in 2003 to “Timex. Life is ticking.” • Frito-Lay challenged our self-control when they released their advertising slogan for Lay’s potato chips of “Betcha can’t eat just one” in 1963. They were the first snack food manufacturer to release television commercials, using actor Bert Lahr of The Wizard of Oz fame as their spokesman. Herman Lay started up the company in 1932 selling potato chips out of the trunk of his car. He merged his venture with the Frito Company in 1961. • The name of Paul Marcarelli is probably not familiar, but it’s almost certain that his face is. Paul was the actor who traveled the country for Verizon Wireless beginning in 2002 asking, “Can you hear me now?” The campaign was a huge success because most people are familiar with having to move to a place with better cell phone reception. The first year Verizon ran the ad, their sales improved by 10%, and numbers grew by another 15% the following year. Today, Verizon’s slogan is “Never settle.”

• The 1970s were an exciting time in the electronics world. The floppy disk was invented in 1970, an invention that revolutionized the storage of computer data. In 1973, the first word processor that used floppy disks for storage was introduced by Vydec, a media system capable of holding 80 to 100 pages of text. Early printers included the LA30 dot matrix printer and the daisy-wheel printer, named such because of its resemblance to the flower. Both were introduced in 1970 and were able to print 30 characters per second. IBM debuted its Model 4640 ink-jet printer in 1976, followed up by its 3800 laser printer, able to print 20,000 lines (215 pages) per minute in 1979.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

• In 1974, a patent was granted to Dr. Raymond Damadian for an “Apparatus and Method for Detecting Cancer in Tissue,” the world’s first MRI machine. Dr. Damadian completed construction of the first whole-body scanner three years later. MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and is a means of looking inside the body without surgery or X-rays. The scanner uses magnetism and radio waves to take internal pictures. Dr. Damadian discovered that different types of tissue emit signals of varying lengths, and that cancerous tissue’s signals last much longer than non-cancerous.

• We’ve been “flicking our BIC” since 1973 when BIC introduced its disposable lighter with an adjustable flame. The BIC lighter could provide 3,000 lights before wearing out. Today, BIC produces about 6 million lighters daily worldwide. There have been more than 30 billion lighters sold in 160 countries. Entertainment Weekly has named the “Flick Your BIC” advertising campaign as one of the 50 best campaigns of all time. • In 1974, two Italian doctors, father and son Arpad and Giorgio Fischer, were responsible for the invention of a blunt, hollow surgical instrument called a cannula that enabled the creation of tunnels between major blood vessels of the body. Adding a suction device known as an aspirator, the pair were able to suck out body fat, creating the cosmetic surgery operation known as liposuction. • Are you familiar with the term “timeshifting”? It’s the word used to refer to recording a television program to play back at a more convenient time, a process facilitated by the invention of the VCR in 1971. The first VCR for home use was the Phillips Model 1500, introduced in 1972. It was an expensive item and for many years, most consumers chose to rent rather than purchase this pricey technology. • In 1979, Sony introduced an item that changed the way people listened to music. Sony’s co-founder Masaru Ibuka loved opera music and wanted to listen to it while traveling by air. He approached a company engineer with his idea of a portable audio cassette player. The engineer designed it, adding lightweight headphones and the Walkman was born! By 1995, sales of Walkman units had reached 150 million. Improvements over the years have resulted in 300 different Walkman models produced to date.

Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar are earning $20 million, as is "NCIS" star Mark Harmon. *** People thought Dan Stevens was crazy for leaving "Downton Abbey," but his gamble paid off. He's got two films in post-production: "Criminal Activities," with John Travolta; and the Western "In the Valley of Violence," with Ethan Hawke. Q: My favorite show of last season was "Legends," starring Sean Bean. Will it be back for another season? I thought it would be back over the summer. -- Patrick K., via email A: Season two of the hit TNT spy thriller -- based on the award-winning book by master spy-novelist Robert Littell -- returns Monday, Nov. 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The show has been completely revamped, with a new supporting cast, locations and more. Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones," "The Lord of the Rings") returns as an undercover FBI agent whose world is turned upside down when he discovers that the life he knew -- including his name -- has all been a lie. Now on the run for a murder he didn't commit, he searches for his true identity, following a trail that takes him to London and the European continent, where he discovers a dark and violent past that holds the key to his future survival. The new 10-epsisode season stars Winter Ave Zoli, Steve Kazee, Aisling Franciosi, Kelly Overton, Klara Issova and Ralph Brown. In addition, Morris Chestnut will guest-star in several episodes, reprising his role from the first season. In case you're interested, just before the premiere of "Legends," at 9 p.m., is the fall premiere of the second half of season four of "Major Crimes," which has been on hiatus since Aug. 10. Mary McDonnell is back as Los Angeles police captain Sharon Raydor, along with G.W. Bailey, Tony Denison, Michael Paul Chan, Raymond Cruz, Kearran Giovanni, Phillip P. Keene, Robert Gossett, Jonathan Del Arco and Graham Patrick Martin. *** Q: Is "Wayward Pines" coming back next season? -- Martin B., Palm Springs, California

A: Fox decided not to renew the sci-fi/mystery/thriller, which starred Matt Dillon and Terrence Howard, and was executive-produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Originally intended as a stand-alone event miniseries, the head honchos at Fox teased that there might be a season two in the works, if the ratings were there. Apparently they weren't, because the show was not renewed. At least it wasn't the type of show to leave viewers hanging: Much like how each season of "American Horror Story" and "True Crime" are set up, "Wayward Pines" was a self-contained close-ended series.

It may be that the mechanism by which statins reduce heart risk is not just through lowering cholesterol.

For High Cholesterol, Statins Are Way to Go DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I told my doctor that I no longer wanted to take a statin drug. I had read so much about statins and am on meds for cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am 73, and other than having arthritis in my knees, I am not having problems. ROACH: I am 81 years old and in good health. I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weigh 168 pounds, the same as in 1950. My blood pressure and cholesterol are good on treatment, and my pulse is 62. I drink an energy drink three or four times a week after the noon meal, when I don't take a nap and need to keep going. I am a farmer, and am active every day. Are these energy drinks harmful to me? -- L.M.W.

ANSWER: I've written a lot about statins, which have been proven to save lives and reduce heart attacks in people with heart disease and also in some people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. In contrast, although non-statin medications reduce cholesterol, they have not been proven to do what they are really intended to do, which is to prevent heart disease and death.

ANSWER: The caffeine in one energy drink is about 160 mg per 16-ounce can, which is the equivalent of somewhere around a cup or two of regular coffee, depending on how strong you make it. That much caffeine doesn't cause problems for most people, especially for those who are used to it. However, it also has 52 grams of sugar -- about 14 teaspoons. My advice is to stick with coffee. You will save money and reduce your sugar intake a lot.

I suspect that medications like fenofibrate do have a small benefit in protecting the heart; however, I would not use them unless the side effects of statins made it impossible to take one. Often, people intolerant of one statin do well on another. For people at high risk, such as those with previous heart attack or known blockages, I would try a different class of medication.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive Orlando, FL 32803.

For people at lower risk, I would work on a diet proven to reduce heart disease risk, such as the Mediterranean diet, and encourage regular exercise

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) What Is High Blood Pressure? High blood pressure (hypertension) increases the risk of dangerous health problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. Doctors measure blood pressure using two numbers, such as 120/80. The first number shows the surge of pressure in the arteries with every heart beat, and the second number shows the pressure between beats. If either one of these numbers is too high, blood pressure can be dangerous. Bringing blood pressure under control is very important, and treatment often involves taking medication. However, changing the way you eat can bring you blood pressure down and may help reduce the need for medication. What Can I Do to Control My Blood Pressure? Reduce salt in your diet. Cutting down on salt helps reduce blood pressure. You can do this by: • Using less and less salt in cooking. Your taste will soon adjust.

• Limit foods that are packed in brine, such as pickles and olives, and high sodium condiments, such as soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, and barbeque sauce.

• Fruits—fresh or frozen varieties, such as bananas, oranges, apples, pears, grapefruit, strawberries, mango, papaya, guava, strawberries, and blueberries

Read the “Nutrition Facts” label. The amount of sodium (salt) in a food product is listed on the nutrition facts label. The following label claims can be placed on a food package which will tell you if the product is low in salt:

Lower your weight. Avoiding fatty foods, such as animal products and fried foods, and increasing the use of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans helps reduce weight. In turn, this helps bring down blood pressure. As an added benefit, losing weight reduces your risk of diabetes, heart problems, joint problems, some cancers, and other conditions. If you have a significant weight problem, be sure to consult with your doctor about the best ways for you to lose weight.

• Low Sodium—contains 140 mg or less sodium per serving • Very Low Sodium—contains 35 mg or less sodium per serving • Sodium Free—contains less than 5 mg of sodium per serving Choose more vegetarian foods. People who follow vegetarian diets typically have lower blood pressure. No one knows exactly why these foods work so well, but it is probably because cutting out meat, dairy products, and added fats reduces the blood’s viscosity (or “thickness”) which, in turn, brings down blood pressure. Plant products are generally lower in fat and sodium and have no cholesterol at all. Vegetables and fruits are also rich in potassium, which helps lower blood pressure. Include more of the following foods in your diet which are naturally low in sodium: • Whole grains—brown rice, whole wheat bread or pasta, unsweetened hot or cold cereal, millet, barley, buckwheat groats, and quinoa

Limit alcohol use. Alcohol can raise blood pressure and it helps to limit alcohol to no more than one to two drinks per day (beer and wine count as drinks). Become more physically active. Exercise can help bring down your blood pressure. Since exercise puts added strain on your heart, be sure to check with your doctor first about the best way for you to become more physically active. Avoid tobacco. There are many good reasons to quit smoking, and healthier arteries is one of them. Let your doctor know you are concerned about your blood pressure and want to use foods to help bring it under control. High blood pressure is dangerous, so, let your doctor guide you as to when and if your need for medication has changed. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

• Beans/legumes—dried (not canned) black-eyed peas, kidney beans, pinto beans, lentils, navy beans, chickpeas, soymilk, textured vegetable protein, and tofu

• Avoiding canned foods with added sodium (salt). • Choose low-sodium (low-salt) varieties of canned soups and vegetables, or fresh or frozen vegetables which are naturally low in sodium.

A+ School Lunches Making easy yet healthy lunches that your child won't want to trade with friends in the school cafeteria can be as difficult as your young scholar's long division homework. Creating an appealing, healthy lunch is not a new challenge, and today's largely unhealthy pre-packaged lunches or cafeteria "treats" can be temptations that many students find hard to avoid. To help your kids refuel at school, here are several ideas for packing a healthy lunch:

Keep it interesting

1. Place carrot pieces and two of the quartered tomatoes in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the knife blade. Process by pulse method until the carrots are smooth and incorporated into the tomato. Scrape sides.

* If your child loves peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, try a peanut-butter and banana roll-up. Spread peanut butter on a whole-grain tortilla, add a sliced banana, and roll!

2. Add zuchini and bell peppers, and process until smooth. Add salt, yellow mustard and Italian seasoning. Process until well-combined. Drizzle oil into shoot while processor is running.

* Fill a pita with your child's favorite vegetables, adding hummus for flavor.

3. Serve with pita chips as a dip, or as a sauce for pizzas or bagels, or mixed with whole-wheat pasta. Store tightly covered in refrigerator, use within 3 days. Makes 4 cups.

Go beyond pretzels! * Dip apple slices in nut/seed butter. * Pack snap peas, sliced bell peppers or cucumbers for color and crunch.

Pack a small quantity of several foods in a Japanese-style, bento-type lunch box. Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container. Each compartment is filled with uniquely shaped, colorful foods. Bento boxes are a great way to offer healthy foods in a fun and attractive way.

Banish boredom by using whole-grain pitas, tortillas or rolls for sandwiches. Switch out the fillers, too. For example:

* Add some variety with air-popped, low-fat popcorn. Watch the sugar Don't forget that juice and sodas can be high in sugar and calories. Replace them with water, or almond or soy milk. 1-800-930-9204 MORE AD SLOGANS

• “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t” was the jingle originated in the 1970s by Peter Paul to advertise its chocolate and coconut candy bars Mounds and Almond Joy. The original slogan of Mounds, a confection created in 1920, was “indescribably delicious.” It was the result of a contest that challenged entrants to come up with the best two words to sell a candy. The winner took home $10. Almond Joy (for when you feel like a nut!) came along in 1946. • How long have we been in good hands with Allstate? The company was founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck, & Company, but the familiar slogan didn’t come along until 1956. A company sales executive came up with the idea based on his comforting words to his wife when a doctor was caring for their child. It’s now ranked as one of the most recognizable slogans in America. • Nothing outlasts the Energizer. It keeps going, and going…” The pink bunny in the sunglasses and sandals beating on his bass drum has proven the effectiveness of this slogan time and time again. Appearing in commercials since 1989, the term “Energizer Bunny” has become part of our vocabulary referring to anything or anyone that continues endlessly. • Plenty of exhausted young mothers have uttered the phrase, “Calgon, take me away” since that catchphrase was introduced in the 1970s. A quiet, relaxing bath in Calgon bath products was the solution to the stress of everyday life. The product takes its name from “calcium gone,” referring to its

ability to prevent the formation of unwanted elements in the water. • In 1910, 18-year-old J.C. Hall had two shoeboxes of picture postcards to his name and nothing else. He peddled them on the streets of Kansas City, Missouri, then bought more, and soon had a good little business. His brother joined him and they became the Hall Brothers Company. By 1915, they were offering high-quality valentines and Christmas cards. In 1917, they started printing their own gift wrap. Knowing that goldsmiths used the word “hallmark” to denote a mark of quality, in 1928, the Hall brothers began printing the word Hallmark on the back of every card. The year 1944 brought the advertising phrase that most folks are familiar with – “When you care enough to send the very best.” The NBC network approached the company in 1951 about sponsoring a premiere television production and the Hallmark Hall of Fame program began. Over the years, the productions have garnered 80 Emmy Awards. • One of the longest-running, most familiar ad slogans is Campbell’s “Mmm, mmm, good!”, which has been in use since 1935. Fruit merchant Joseph Campbell and icebox manufacturer Abraham Anderson teamed up in Camden, New Jersey, in 1869 to produce canned vegetables and jellies. The invention of condensed soup in 1897 by the nephew of the company’s general manager cemented Campbell’s place in history. The company began using the image of the roundfaced Campbell kids in 1904 on the side of trolley cars.

This time, he was looking to quarterback out in Los Angeles, where they had not one, but two pro teams in town. "I'm perfect for the Raiders offense," he said, beginning to sob. "It's the perfect offense for me ... long bombs on every single play ... but the owner and GM ... this one guy ... he won't sign me. What can I do?"

back, a red patch was sewn reading "Joanie loves Chachi." The screams could be heard all the way back to Oakland. A few weeks later, the Godfather got a bunch of flowers sent to his office. The quarterback had gotten the starting job. "How'd you do it," he was asked. He shrugged.

To his surprise, Vito jumped up and smacked him. "I gave him a jacket he couldn't use." "You can be a RAM!"

The Godfather Reimagined When young Vito first tried out for the football team, he was rejected for being too small. Besides, his brothers before him had been seen as a bit too violent, and his father didn't get along with the guy in charge of the league. In fact, the two had a very public exchange at an awards banquet that led to the family getting blackballed from the community's social circuit. What Vito lacked in size he made up for in perception. His parents died young and he had since moved to another school district with his extended family. Embarrassed of his accent, he worked around the edges of the schoolyards a bit. Still, he made a quick reputation for himself as a club boxer, where he raged like a bull, trouncing opponents, and soon he had gained a reputation for being a hardworking guy.

Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Tom was dispatched to negotiate the very next day. At first, the owner/GM would not take his call. Upon learning of his pedigree, however, he changed his tune and invited him to his palatial estate for dinner. Before dinner, the owner took Tom on a tour of his walk-in closet. "Tom ... why didn't you tell me you were sent by Genco Beverages? Anyway, these are my leather jackets ... and this one ... this one I won't even wear. It was worn by Henry Winkler when he jumped the shark on "Happy Days." No ... this one stays here." He petted the jacket, softly cooing, "Fonzi ... Fonzi ..." But dinner did not go so well. The mere mention of Leather Tuscadero sent the owner/GM into a fit.

He started a company with a friend that imported an organic energy drink, married a sweet girl and soon became wealthy enough to move out to the suburbs, where he went on to grow a family. His upward climb continued until his drinks were served in every stadium. He had power and influence.

"He never gets that starting job! And let me tell you another thing, bucko! I ain't gonna sit on it for anyone! I ain't no Richie Cunningham!"

One day, a quarterback asked for a meeting. He was on the downside of his career and he wanted Vito and his adopt-

same amount. You also might be charged for insurance on your possession, depending on its value. You'll only get a portion (maybe half) of your item's true worth when you get a loan. The pawn shop owner wants to make sure he can sell it and make a profit if you never come back. You will have let your possession go for a lot less than you might have gotten selling through a newspaper ad or online.

Pawn Shops: Lender of Last Resort The best reason to have emergency savings can be summed up in two words: pawn shops. If something happens and you have savings, you dip into it to solve your problem, and later build it up again. But if you don't have savings and can't arrange a bank loan to get you through the emergency, you may be forced to go to an alternate money source -- like a pawn shop. A pawn shop is a place where you hand over something you own -- such as jewelry, a musical instrument, electronics, TV, gun or power tools -- in exchange for cash. When you pay the money back, you get your possession back. It's in the paying it back that problems can arise. Pawn shops have exorbitant interest rates. There are state and federal laws, but the rates are still high. Do the math. If the interest rate is 15 percent per month, multiply that by 12 to get your true annual interest rate. (Compare bank rates online.) Even if the rate is much lower (in states where the rate is capped), you can be dinged for "monthly service charges" that add up to nearly the

You'll be given a time limit (usually 30-60-90 days) to reclaim your possession and repay the loan. If you need a time extension, no problem -- but you'll pay extra interest, storage fees and more. One person in four never reclaims their property. If you're in a position where you must have fast cash and need to deal with a pawn shop, read the fine print on your claim ticket. It should have all your information, plus the specifics of the loan. Like a bank loan or a mortgage, your ticket has to spell out the terms, how much you owe, how much the interest is and when the "note" is due, as well as your identification. If you deal with a pawn shop, do your homework. Call the local Better Business Bureau for complaints. And do NOT lose your claim ticket. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

* Your home -- Who gets to keep it? The one who ends up with the house will likely end up with less of something else in the settlement. * Caring for parents -- If you're a caregiver (financially, physically or both) for your own parents, you'll likely end up doing this on your own. What will that do to your own health? Can you afford it?

DIVORCE RATE SOARS The rate of divorce among older adults (over age 50) has doubled in the past 20 years. Among those who are in remarriages the divorce rate is even higher -- 2 1/2 times that of those in a first marriage. The implications for seniors aren't the same as they are for younger generations -- we have a different set of issues that come with divorce. If you're considering ending a marriage, here are some things to think about: * Adult children -- What role will they need to take? Caregiver or financial supporter as one of you ages? And that's if you have adult children nearby.

* Alimony -- If you're still working, you'll likely pay alimony to an unemployed spouse, and not for just a short period of time. It will likely be until the end of his or her life.

* Retirement -- Your assets will likely be halved, and as a senior, your ability to increase income will be limited. Your tax bracket will change to single, which is a higher tax rate. Get financial and legal counseling before dropping the D-word on your spouse. Get all your information first so that assets don't disappear. Know whether there are any 401(k) plans and if there have been any loans taken out on them. Be sure to understand your rights. And if you remarry, get a prenup without fail. BELT BUCKLE Q: I was recently given a Wells Fargo belt buckle that is identified as being made by Tiffany and Company. What can you tell me about it? -- Keith, Crescent Valley, B.C., Canada A: According to the Antique Trader Guide to Fakes & Reproductions by Mark Chervenka, your belt buckle is a knock-off and was probably made during the 1960s. In addition to Wells Fargo buckles, others also were issued, including ones featuring such highly collectible names as Winchester, Coca-Cola and Abraham Lincoln.

A: There are several excellent guides, but since you specified a small size, my pick would be "Warman's Companion Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments" by Mary Sieber and published by Krause Books. Even though it is in a smaller format, it has detailed listings with more than 550 illustrations in full color. According to a collector I consulted who collects Hallmark ornaments, the prices listed seem to reflect the current market. *** Q: I have three antique bedspreads, never used, and beautiful. I want to sell them. -- Dominic, Warren, Michigan A: There are bedspreads and there are bedspreads. Since you provided me with no information, I really can't help you. Are your bedspreads handmade quilt, turn-of-the-century woolen camp blankets or

of bird made the nest and learn the likely color of the eggs that were in the nest at one time. If your family traveled to new places this past summer or if you plan to take weekend trips this fall, the items also can be displayed in attractive ways on the table. If you have collected sand from different beaches, for example, layer it in a clean, clear recycled jar. It's fun to see the range of colors and types of sand from beach to beach. And it's a unique way to recall a trip to Clearwater Beach, Florida, in 2013, or Santa Monica, California, in 2015.

SET UP A NATURE DISCOVERY NOOK Set aside a space on your kitchen counter or a table in your family room to showcase your kids' summer nature collectibles. Their own museum of natural wonders can be enjoyed by friends and family who come to your home. And when they do, the kids can tell them where they found the treasure, what it's called and something interesting that captured their imagination. Best of all, this collection zone will be a constant reminder of the time you spent together discovering the mysteries and beauty of the world we live in.

Demand equals salability. *** Q: I have a collection of about a dozen Reader's Digest condensed books. Some have never been read and are in near-new condition. Where can I sell them? -- Freda, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: The Reader's Digest condensed books were popular throughout the 1950s and '60s. They have little commercial value. For example, I recently was at a garage sale where several dozen were priced for a buck each. Instead of trying to sell them, have you considered donating them to a charity? For indoor rainy-day fun, use some of the sticks and stones for crafting. Here are two ideas: * Flat rocks aren't just for skipping across the surface of a lake. Make a turtle! Choose a flat oval stone for the body, and glue small ones underneath, stretching out to the sides for four feet and a tail, with a larger one for a head. Add two pebbles for eyes. * Make a twig vase with a recycled tin can. Use shears to cut similar-width branches an inch or so longer than the height of the can. Place two large rubber bands around the outside of the can, one near the top and one near the bottom. Insert branches side by side, as if building a twig fence around the can. Wind twine or raffia over the rubber bands to cover them, then knot.

Add collected finds this fall and, for fun, classify and label them with small strips of index cards (date the excursion and describe the item), just like in museums. For example: "This nest fell off the oak tree in the backyard on a windy day. I found it behind the garbage can. I discovered yarn in the nest. I think the yarn came from the bird feeder that was hanging from our swing set last year."

Earlier this year, José González released Vestiges & Claws, his first solo album in seven years, to glowing reviews. NPR says,“González’s songs are slight little creations, with minimal words encapsulating big ideas and breezy pop melodies disguising weighty notions about life’s endlessly refracting illusions.
