ADVERTISING SLOGANS by Kathy Wolfe All companies know the importance of advertising and product recognition. This week, Tidbits investigates some clever slogans that have caught our attention over the years. • Who hasn’t sung along to the “Rice-A-Roni, the San Francisco Treat” jingle? The ﬁrst commercial featuring the clang of a cable car aired in 1959, launching the success of the small Golden Grain Macaroni Company. The product was based on the family recipe of the founders, the Domenico’s. There were not many packaged side dishes available in the late 1950s and Rice-A-Roni was an immediate hit. It became so successful that when Golden Grain sold out to the Quaker Oats Company in 1986, the price tag was $275 million.

• The Clairol company was started up in 1931 by two Americans who had been traveling in France and observed hair-coloring preparations there. Sold strictly to salons for 25 years, in 1956, an at-home product was introduced with its slogan “Does she or doesn’t she? Only her hairdresser knows for sure.” Within 6 years, 70% of American women were coloring their hair. The company has had several catchy phrases over the years, including 1965’s “The closer he gets, the better you look” and the 1960s slogan, “Is it true blondes have more fun?” • “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is” is one of the most recognizable ad slogans of all time. The effervescent antacid Alka-Seltzer made its debut in 1931 as a remedy for aches, pains, inflammation, fever, heartburn, indigestion, and a number of other maladies. The character “Speedy” (signifying speedy relief) was introduced in 1951 and was used until the mid-1960s. The company had another successful catchphrase in 1971 when a man suffering from severe indigestion said, “Try it, you’ll like it,” followed in 1972 with “I can’t believe I ate the whole thing.” Alka-Seltzer’s competition Rolaids countered with “How do you spell relief?”

• Credit card companies are well-known for reminding us how much we need them. In 1975, American Express introduced its “Don’t leave home without it” campaign, featuring Oscar-Award-winning actor Karl Malden. Various celebrities asked TV viewers, “Do you know me?” in another American Express ad. In 2004, the company updated its slogan to “My life. My card.” Visa’s catchphrase was, “It’s everywhere you want to be,” initiated in 1985. (Visa spends about $500 million each year on advertising around the world!) MasterCard was not to be left out, and in 1997 originated, “There are some things money can’t buy. For everything else, there’s MasterCard.” Capital One followed up with, “What’s in your wallet?” • What’s the best part of waking up? According to Folgers, it’s their coffee in your cup! The company, in business since 1850, featured the Swedish neighbor Mrs. Olson in their ads from 1965 to 1986, who told us that Folgers was “mountain grown, the richest kind of coffee.” Another coffee vendor, Maxwell House, has one of the longest-used slogans, “Good to the Last Drop,” created in 1917. • Founded in 1922 by a retired farmer turned insurance salesman, State Farm is currently #41 on the Fortune 500 list of largest companies. They process almost 35,000 claims per day. Pop star Barry Manilow composed their “Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there” jingle in 1971.

Ilon Specht came up with the phrase “Because I’m worth it” for the L’Oreal cosmetics company. Still in use today, it’s recognized by 80% of women. • Where did our favorite candy M&Ms get its name? The little chocolates with a candy shell were introduced by the Mars Company in 1941 as a treat that allowed soldiers to carry chocolate without it melting. The two “M”s stand for Forrest Mars, son of the Mars founder, and Bruce Murrie, who was the son of the Hershey Chocolate president, who owned a 20% share in the product. M&Ms famous “melts in your mouth, not in your hand” slogan was trademarked in 1954. • After decades of using “It takes a licking and keeps on ticking” to describe the durability of their watches, Timex replaced the phrase with one they felt updated their image. The 1950s phrase was updated in 2003 to “Timex. Life is ticking.” • Frito-Lay challenged our self-control when they released their advertising slogan for Lay’s potato chips of “Betcha can’t eat just one” in 1963. They were the first snack food manufacturer to release television commercials, using actor Bert Lahr of The Wizard of Oz fame as their spokesman. Herman Lay started up the company in 1932 selling potato chips out of the trunk of his car. He merged his venture with the Frito Company in 1961. • The name of Paul Marcarelli is probably not familiar, but it’s almost certain that his face is. Paul was the actor who traveled the country for Verizon Wireless beginning in 2002 asking, “Can you hear me now?” The campaign was a huge success because most people are familiar with having to move to a place with better cell phone reception. The first year Verizon ran the ad, their sales improved by 10%, and numbers grew by another 15% the following year. Today, Verizon’s slogan is “Never settle.”

• The 1970s were an exciting time in the electronics world. The floppy disk was invented in 1970, an invention that revolutionized the storage of computer data. In 1973, the first word processor that used floppy disks for storage was introduced by Vydec, a media system capable of holding 80 to 100 pages of text. Early printers included the LA30 dot matrix printer and the daisy-wheel printer, named such because of its resemblance to the flower. Both were introduced in 1970 and were able to print 30 characters per second. IBM debuted its Model 4640 ink-jet printer in 1976, followed up by its 3800 laser printer, able to print 20,000 lines (215 pages) per minute in 1979.

• In 1974, a patent was granted to Dr. Raymond Damadian for an “Apparatus and Method for Detecting Cancer in Tissue,” the world’s first MRI machine. Dr. Damadian completed construction of the first whole-body scanner three years later. MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, and is a means of looking inside the body without surgery or X-rays. The scanner uses magnetism and radio waves to take internal pictures. Dr. Damadian discovered that different types of tissue emit signals of varying lengths, and that cancerous tissue’s signals last much longer than non-cancerous.

• We’ve been “flicking our BIC” since 1973 when BIC introduced its disposable lighter with an adjustable flame. The BIC lighter could provide 3,000 lights before wearing out. Adding a suction device known as an aspirator, the pair were able to suck out body fat, creating the cosmetic surgery operation known as liposuction. • Are you familiar with the term “timeshifting”? It’s the word used to refer to recording a television program to play back at a more convenient time, a process facilitated by the invention of the VCR in 1971. The first VCR for home use was the Phillips Model 1500, introduced in 1972. It was an expensive item and for many years, most consumers chose to rent rather than purchase this pricey technology. • In 1979, Sony introduced an item that changed the way people listened to music. Sony’s co-founder Masaru Ibuka loved opera music and wanted to listen to it while traveling by air. He approached a company engineer with his idea of a portable audio cassette player. The engineer designed it, adding lightweight headphones and the Walkman was born! By 1995, sales of Walkman units had reached 150 million. Improvements over the years have resulted in 300 different Walkman models produced to date.

The show has been completely revamped, with a new supporting cast, locations and more. Sean Bean ("Game of Thrones," "The Lord of the Rings") returns as an undercover FBI agent whose world is turned upside down when he discovers that the life he knew -- including his name -- has all been a lie. Now on the run for a murder he didn't commit, he searches for his true identity, following a trail that takes him to London and the European continent, where he discovers a dark and violent past that holds the key to his future survival. The new 10-epsisode season stars Winter Ave Zoli, Steve Kazee, Aisling Franciosi, Kelly Overton, Klara Issova and Ralph Brown. A: Fox decided not to renew the sci-ﬁ/mystery/thriller, which starred Matt Dillon and Terrence Howard, and was executive-produced by M. Night Shyamalan. Originally intended as a stand-alone event miniseries, the head honchos at Fox teased that there might be a season two in the works, if the ratings were there. Apparently they weren't, because the show was not renewed. At least it wasn't the type of show to leave viewers hanging: Much like how each season of "American Horror Story" and "True Crime" are set up, "Wayward Pines" was a self-contained close-ended series.

Submerge the shower head in the vinegar and draw the plastic bag up tightly around the stem. Use a rubber band to secure the bag around the shower head. Leave overnight. Remove, scrub and shower to release the deposits. * Borax can be used to keep sidewalks free of weeds. Simply sprinkle a little Borax on the sidewalk and sweep into the cracks. This is a very effective weed killer, but it also will kill your grass if you use too much, so keep it in the cracks only!

Another medication, ezitimibe (Zetia or Ezetrol), also lowers cholesterol but without convincing proof that it lowers heart disease risk. It may be that the mechanism by which statins reduce heart risk is not just through lowering cholesterol.

For High Cholesterol, Statins Are Way to Go DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I told my doctor that I no longer wanted to take a statin drug. I had read so much about statins and am on meds for cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am 73, and other than having arthritis in my knees, I am not having problems. My doctor put me on fenoﬁbrate. I am due for my yearly checkup in a few months and don't really know yet how this is working on my cholesterol. I was wondering what your feelings are about this drug. -- RS

I drink an energy drink three or four times a week after the noon meal, when I don't take a nap and need to keep going. I am a farmer, and am active every day. ANSWER: I've written a lot about statins, which have been proven to save lives and reduce heart attacks in people with heart disease and also in some people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. In contrast, although non-statin medications reduce cholesterol, they have not been proven to do what they are really intended to do, which is to prevent heart disease and death.

ANSWER: The caffeine in one energy drink is about 160 mg per 16-ounce can, which is the equivalent of somewhere around a cup or two of regular coffee, depending on how strong you make it. That much caffeine doesn't cause problems for most people, especially for those who are used to it. However, it also has 52 grams of sugar -- about 14 teaspoons. My advice is to stick with coffee. You will save money and reduce your sugar intake a lot.

I suspect that medications like fenoﬁbrate do have a small beneﬁt in protecting the heart; however, I would not use them unless the side effects of statins made it impossible to take one. Often, people intolerant of one statin do well on another. For people at high risk, such as those with previous heart attack or known blockages, I would try a different class of medication.

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) What Is High Blood Pressure? High blood pressure (hypertension) increases the risk of dangerous health problems, such as heart attacks and strokes. Doctors measure blood pressure using two numbers, such as 120/80. The ﬁrst number shows the surge of pressure in the arteries with every heart beat, and the second number shows the pressure between beats. If either one of these numbers is too high, blood pressure can be dangerous. Bringing blood pressure under control is very important, and treatment often involves taking medication. However, changing the way you eat can bring you blood pressure down and may help reduce the need for medication. What Can I Do to Control My Blood Pressure? Reduce salt in your diet. Cutting down on salt helps reduce blood pressure. You can do this by: • Using less and less salt in cooking. Your taste will soon adjust.

• Limit foods that are packed in brine, such as pickles and olives, and high sodium condiments, such as soy sauce, ketchup, mustard, and barbeque sauce.

• Fruits—fresh or frozen varieties, such as bananas, oranges, apples, pears, grapefruit, strawberries, mango, papaya, guava, strawberries, and blueberries

Read the “Nutrition Facts” label. The amount of sodium (salt) in a food product is listed on the nutrition facts label. The following label claims can be placed on a food package which will tell you if the product is low in salt:

Lower your weight. Avoiding fatty foods, such as animal products and fried foods, and increasing the use of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans helps reduce weight. In turn, this helps bring down blood pressure. As an added benefit, losing weight reduces your risk of diabetes, heart problems, joint problems, some cancers, and other conditions. If you have a significant weight problem, be sure to consult with your doctor about the best ways for you to lose weight.

• Low Sodium—contains 140 mg or less sodium per serving • Very Low Sodium—contains 35 mg or less sodium per serving • Sodium Free—contains less than 5 mg of sodium per serving Choose more vegetarian foods. People who follow vegetarian diets typically have lower blood pressure. No one knows exactly why these foods work so well, but it is probably because cutting out meat, dairy products, and added fats reduces the blood’s viscosity (or “thickness”) which, in turn, brings down blood pressure. Plant products are generally lower in fat and sodium and have no cholesterol at all. Vegetables and fruits are also rich in potassium, which helps lower blood pressure. Include more of the following foods in your diet which are naturally low in sodium: • Whole grains—brown rice, whole wheat bread or pasta, unsweetened hot or cold cereal, millet, barley, buckwheat groats, and quinoa

Limit alcohol use. Alcohol can raise blood pressure and it helps to limit alcohol to no more than one to two drinks per day (beer and wine count as drinks). Become more physically active. Exercise can help bring down your blood pressure. Since exercise puts added strain on your heart, be sure to check with your doctor ﬁrst about the best way for you to become more physically active. Avoid tobacco. There are many good reasons to quit smoking, and healthier arteries is one of them. Let your doctor know you are concerned about your blood pressure and want to use foods to help bring it under control. High blood pressure is dangerous, so, let your doctor guide you as to when and if your need for medication has changed. Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

Keep it interesting

1. Place carrot pieces and two of the quartered tomatoes in the bowl of a food processor ﬁtted with the knife blade. Process by pulse method until the carrots are smooth and incorporated into the tomato. Scrape sides.

* If your child loves peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, try a peanut-butter and banana roll-up. Spread peanut butter on a whole-grain tortilla, add a sliced banana, and roll!

2. Add zuchini and bell peppers, and process until smooth. Add salt, yellow mustard and Italian seasoning. Process until well-combined. Drizzle oil into shoot while processor is running.

* Fill a pita with your child's favorite vegetables, adding hummus for ﬂavor.

3. Serve with pita chips as a dip, or as a sauce for pizzas or bagels, or mixed with whole-wheat pasta. Store tightly covered in refrigerator, use within 3 days. Makes 4 cups.

Pack a small quantity of several foods in a Japanese-style, bento-type lunch box. Bento is a single-portion takeout or home-packed meal common in Japanese cuisine. A traditional bento holds rice with pickled or cooked vegetables, usually in a box-shaped container. Each compartment is ﬁlled with uniquely shaped, colorful foods. Bento boxes are a great way to offer healthy foods in a fun and attractive way.

• “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t” was the jingle originated in the 1970s by Peter Paul to advertise its chocolate and coconut candy bars Mounds and Almond Joy. The original slogan of Mounds, a confection created in 1920, was “indescribably delicious.” It was the result of a contest that challenged entrants to come up with the best two words to sell a candy. The winner took home $10. Almond Joy (for when you feel like a nut!) came along in 1946. • How long have we been in good hands with Allstate? The company was founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck, & Company, but the familiar slogan didn’t come along until 1956. Still, he made a quick reputation for himself as a club boxer, where he raged like a bull, trouncing opponents, and soon he had gained a reputation for being a hardworking guy.

Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Tom was dispatched to negotiate the very next day. At ﬁrst, the owner/GM would not take his call. Upon learning of his pedigree, however, he changed his tune and invited him to his palatial estate for dinner. Before dinner, the owner took Tom on a tour of his walk-in closet. Pawn Shops: Lender of Last Resort The best reason to have emergency savings can be summed up in two words: pawn shops. If something happens and you have savings, you dip into it to solve your problem, and later build it up again. But if you don't have savings and can't arrange a bank loan to get you through the emergency, you may be forced to go to an alternate money source -- like a pawn shop. A pawn shop is a place where you hand over something you own -- such as jewelry, a musical instrument, electronics, TV, gun or power tools -- in exchange for cash. When you pay the money back, you get your possession back. It's in the paying it back that problems can arise. Pawn shops have exorbitant interest rates. There are state and federal laws, but the rates are still high. Do the math. If the interest rate is 15 percent per month, multiply that by 12 to get your true annual interest rate. DIVORCE RATE SOARS The rate of divorce among older adults (over age 50) has doubled in the past 20 years. Among those who are in remarriages the divorce rate is even higher -- 2 1/2 times that of those in a ﬁrst marriage. The implications for seniors aren't the same as they are for younger generations -- we have a different set of issues that come with divorce. If you're considering ending a marriage, here are some things to think about: * Adult children -- What role will they need to take? Caregiver or ﬁnancial supporter as one of you ages? And that's if you have adult children nearby.

* Alimony -- If you're still working, you'll likely pay alimony to an unemployed spouse, and not for just a short period of time. It will likely be until the end of his or her life.

* Retirement -- Your assets will likely be halved, and as a senior, your ability to increase income will be limited. Your tax bracket will change to single, which is a higher tax rate. Get financial and legal counseling before dropping the D-word on your spouse. Get all your information first so that assets don't disappear. Know whether there are any 401(k) plans and if there have been any loans taken out on them. Be sure to understand your rights. And if you remarry, get a prenup without fail. For indoor rainy-day fun, use some of the sticks and stones for crafting. Here are two ideas: * Flat rocks aren't just for skipping across the surface of a lake. Make a turtle! Choose a ﬂat oval stone for the body, and glue small ones underneath, stretching out to the sides for four feet and a tail, with a larger one for a head. Add two pebbles for eyes. * Make a twig vase with a recycled tin can. Use shears to cut similar-width branches an inch or so longer than the height of the can. Place two large rubber bands around the outside of the can, one near the top and one near the bottom. Insert branches side by side, as if building a twig fence around the can. Wind twine or rafﬁa over the rubber bands to cover them, then knot.

Add collected ﬁnds this fall and, for fun, classify and label them with small strips of index cards (date the excursion and describe the item), just like in museums. For example: "This nest fell off the oak tree in the backyard on a windy day. I found it behind the garbage can. I discovered yarn in the nest. I think the yarn came from the bird feeder that was hanging from our swing set last year."
