• A nut is simply defined as a “dry fruit with one seed in which the seed case wall becomes very hard at maturity.” It’s plain to see that a peanut doesn’t fit this description. That’s because peanuts are really legumes – a pod with multiple seeds – and are grown underground unlike nuts. About 3.75 million pounds (1,700,971 kg) of peanuts are eaten every day across America. The peanut has its origins in South America, specifically Brazil and Peru, and found its way to North America with early explorers. Today, peanuts are grown primarily in China, West Africa, and the United States. Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, Virginia, and Oklahoma are America’s key producers of peanuts.

NUTTY FACTS (continued):

• With origins in ancient Persia, the walnut is the oldest tree food known to man. Walnut meats closely resemble a little human brain, with left and right hemispheres, and because of this, people in medieval times believed that walnuts could cure headaches. In actuality, walnuts contain substances that help develop neuron transmitters within the brain, boosting its ability to send signals and messages. Studies also indicate they help ward off dementia by breaking down the plaques associated with Alzheimer’s Disease. Walnuts are the only nut that contain heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids, and can help reduce inflammation in the arteries. • California supplies 99% of U.S. walnuts and 75% of the world’s resources. Franciscan monks first began growing walnuts in California in the late 1700s. Commercial groves were first planted in 1867. • Native to Brazil and the West Indies, cashews are also drupes and are a member of the poison ivy family. The lining of the cashew’s seed contains a powerful oil called anacardic acid that can irritate and burn the skin. Once the cashew is roasted, the oil disintegrates and the shell is easy to remove. Research indicates that cashews may be beneficial in warding off or managing diabetes by stimulating blood sugar absorption by muscle cells. • Sometimes called the “king of nuts,” the Brazil nut is actually another drupe. The Brazil nut tree produces large pods weighing about 4 lbs. (1.8 kg) that are filled with 12 to 20 seeds, sectioned like a grapefruit.

The pods fall to the ground when ripe, split apart, and release the seeds. They are grown mostly in the Amazonian rain forest of northern Bolivia, not in Brazil as the name implies. The trees have a height of 150 feet (45.7 m), with a trunk diameter of nearly 8 feet (2.4 m). • Brazil nuts are 65% oil with 19 grams of fat in a oneounce serving. You would need to walk nine minutes to burn off the calories in one Brazil nut. The good news is they are high in fiber, protein, and magnesium. • A pecan tree can live to be over 200 years old. The only major tree nut that is native to North America, the name “pecan” has its origins in the Algonquin Native American language, describing “all nuts requiring a stone to crack.” Cultivation of pecan orchards began in the 1700s and George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were among those who planted pecan trees. A tree, which only produces its fruit every two years, has a trunk that can grow to a diameter of more than 3 feet (.9 m). • Many of the more than 1,000 varieties of pecans are named for Native American Indian tribes, including the Cheyenne, Mohawk, Sioux, Choctaw, and Shawnee. Some pecan processing facilities shell 150,000 lbs. (68,039 kg) of pecans every day, enough to make 300,000 pecan pies. The average pecan pie contains about 78 pecans. • About 80% of the world’s pecan supply is produced in the United States. There are more than 600,000 pecan trees in Albany, Georgia, making it the nation’s pecan capital. Every year, the community is home to the National Pecan Festival, hosting a race, parade, cooking contest, and crowning of the National Pecan Queen. • Pecans and macadamia nuts have the highest amount of fat, the lowest amount of protein, and the most calories of any nuts. However, a pecan contains more than

19 vitamins and minerals, and is rich in Vitamins A and E, calcium, magnesium, potassium, B vitamins, and zinc. • The macadamia nut tells the farmer when it’s ready for harvest by falling to the ground. With origins in Australia, this nut was not discovered until around 1857 and not cultivated until the 1930s. It was named in honor of an Australian chemist, medical teacher, and politician John Macadam. The seeds were introduced to Hawaii in 1882 as a windbreak for sugar cane fields. Dog owners should be aware that macadamias are toxic to dogs, and can produce weakness, hind leg paralysis, muscle tremors, and severe abdominal pain. • The almond has its origins in the Mediterranean countries. It’s considered a very healthy nut (although it’s really a drupe!), with more calcium than any other nut. It also contains an antioxidant that helps fight inflammation and may keep cancer and cognitive decline at bay. Almonds are the lowest-calorie nuts – 23 nuts contain 160 calories. There are 110,000 acres of almond trees in California, the almond capital of America. • Filberts are also known as hazelnuts or cobnuts, and are the main ingredient in the confection praline. Filberts are used to make Nutella, a sweet hazelnut chocolate spread, and Frangelico, an Italian liqueur. As with many other nuts, filberts are rich in thiamine and B vitamins. Most of the world’s supply is grown in Turkey (75%), but Iran, Spain, the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington, and British Columbia, Canada, also contribute to the production. • The black walnut tree, a member of the hickory family, secretes a poisonous substance called juglone into the soil. Apples, tomatoes, and white birch should not be planted near a black walnut tree, as juglone deprives the plants of energy for their metabolic activity.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

DONALD FEATHERSTONE Every time you drive past a neighbor’s front yard decorated with plastic pink flamingos, remember the name of this man, Donald Featherstone, their inventor.

• In 1987, Featherstone inscribed his signature in the original molds in order for buyers to distinguish between his creation and unauthorized imitations.

• Back in 1957, Massachusetts native Donald Featherstone was a new graduate of the Worcester Art Museum’s art school, after nine years of formal art training. Described as “an extremely talented artist,” Donald said he “decided to make a living rather than starve to death,” and took a job designing 3D plastic animals for Union Products, Inc.

• In 1996, Featherstone became the president of Union Products. That year he was also awarded the Ig Nobel Prize for Art, a parody of the Nobel Prizes, given each year for unusual achievements. The goal of the prize is to “honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think.” Featherstone remained at the helm of the company until his retirement in 2000. During his 43-year tenure, he had designed over 600 items for Union. In addition, he had co-authored a book The Original Pink Flamingos: Splendor on the Grass.

• One of Featherstone’s first projects at Union Products was to sculpt a duck. He purchased a live duck, named it Charlie, and kept it in his sink while he studied the duck for sculpture. Charlie was later released in Fitchburg, Massachusetts’ Coggshall Park. • Late in 1957, Union tasked Featherstone with carving a flamingo to be molded into plastic. Without a live flamingo to use as a model, he studied photographs of the bird from National Geographic. A pair of flamingos was the result, one standing erect, the other bending over, seeming to munch on grass. Their legs were metal rods that were planted in the ground. Featherstone dubbed his creation Phoenicopterus ruber plasticus. • In 1958, when the color pink was trendy, the plastic birds appeared in the Sears catalog with a retail price of $2.76 a pair. Instructions were included: “Place in garden, lawn, to beautify landscape.” However, not everyone viewed them as a lovely addition to the neighborhood. Some residential developments prohibited the ornaments, declaring that they epitomized bad taste.

• In 2006, after producing an estimated 20 million plastic flamingos, Union Products closed its doors and the bird became an endangered species. Featherstone set out to find a buyer for the molds. In 2007, a New York manufacturer purchased the copyright and molds, and once again the ornaments were in production. • Donald and his wife Nancy, whom he married in 1976 when he was 40 years old, wore matching outfits for more than 35 years. Nancy sewed all of the ensembles, many of them from flamingo-patterned fabric. The couple kept 57 plastic flamingos on their front lawn. Her Christmas gift to Don one year was a 6-foot-tall (1.83-m) bronze flamingo. Although the plastic flamingo was Don’s most popular creation, Nancy claims she has always been partial to the ostrich he designed. • Tribute was paid to Don by naming the pink flamingo character Featherstone in the 2011 Disney film “Gnomeo & Juliet.” Don passed away in June of 2015 at age 79.

HOLLYWOOD -- Sophia Loren turned 81 on Sept. 20 and spent her birthday launching Dolce & Gabbana's new lipstick, "Sophia Loren No. 1." Many film historians believe Sophia and Jane Fonda are the last two movie stars left from Hollywood's Golden Age, when the big film studios ruled Hollywood. Sophia appeared opposite many of the greatest male movie stars. In 1957, she starred with Alan Ladd in "Boy on a Dolphin," Cary Grant and Frank Sinatra in "Pride & Passion," and John Wayne in "Legend of the Lost." In 1960, she starred opposite Clark Gable in "It Started in Naples," Peter Sellers in "The Millionairess" and Vittorio De Sica in "Two Women," for which she became the first winner of a best-actress Oscar for a non-English speaking film. In 1961, she co-starred with Charlton Heston in "El Cid," followed by two films with Marcello Mastroianni: "Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow" (1963) and "Marriage Italian Style" (1964). She next starred with Paul Newman in "Lady L" (1965); Gregory Peck in "Arabesque" (1966); Marlon Brando in "A Countess From Hong Kong," directed by Charlie Chaplain (1967); Peter O'Toole in "Man of La Mancha" (1972); and Richard Burton in "The Voyage" (1974), to name just a few of her 95 films. Yet, with all those sexy male stars, she was rumored to have had only one affair, with Cary Grant, remaining true to the love of life, producer Carlo Ponti, whom she began dating when she was 15 and he was 37. They were married from 1957-1962 but had to annul the marriage when Ponti was arrested for bigamy, and Sophia also was sent to jail. They eventually became French citizens, obtained his divorce and married there in 1966. They stayed married until his death in 2007.

Sophia Loren

When asked if she would ever marry again, Sophia confessed, "No, never again. It would be impossible to love anyone else." She and Ponti had two sons. One of them, Edoardo Ponti, married Sasha Alexander, who was agent Caitlin Todd on "NCIS" for 50 episodes and currently plays Maura Isles on "Rizzoli & Isles." They have a 9-yearold daughter and a 5-year-old son. *** Sophia's contemporary, Gina Lollobrigida, celebrated her 88th birthday July 27. Among her best films were "Trapeze," with Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis, and "Hunchback of Notre Dame," with Anthony Quinn, both in 1956. Then came "Never So Few," with Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen (1959), "Solomon & Sheba," with Yul Brynner (1959) and "Come September," with Rock Hudson (1961). The closest we can come to a movie sex symbol these days are Sophia Vergara (a TV star) and Jennifer Lopez (a music personality)! Anyone got a time machine? (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: Please, please, please tell me it isn't true that ABC Family has canceled "Chasing Life"! That's my favorite show on television today, and it always makes me count my blessings. -- Layla F. in Georgia A: I'm sorry to have to tell you, but the tear-jerking season-two finale that aired last month was indeed the series finale. ABC Family decided not to renew the onehour drama, which centered on 24-year-old April, played by Italia Ricci, a journalist trying to work her way up the ladder at a Boston newspaper while balancing her career and family. Just as things start to come together for her, she gets the devastating news that she has leukemia. The series finale saw April take her best friend, Beth, and love interest, Dominic, to Italy, where she reveals to them she is not eligible for the clinical trials for her cancer treatment and has decided not to pursue a bone-marrow transplant. She just wants to live out her days in peace. She tells Beth: "It's not giving up because I've already won. I could die happy here." *** Q: Is it true that Richie Sambora and Heather Locklear are back together? I saw pictures of them online frolicking on a beach together. -- Nina H., via email A: The former Bon Jovi guitarist and his gorgeous yet downto-Earth ex-wife have not gotten back together. They are one of those rare Hollywood ex-couples who others could learn a lesson from: They have remained good friends since splitting up eight years ago, and they take the co-parenting of daughter Ava very seriously. Recently photos of Richie, Heather and Ava surfaced of the trio having fun in the sun and sand in Bora Bora, where the friendly exes were treating their daughter to a family vacation before she goes off to college.

*** Q: Can you tell me what Aaron Eckhart has been up to lately? -- Rita C., via email A: The handsome and versatile actor is currently shooting Clint Eastwood's latest film, "Sully," which chronicles the January 2009 real-life events where Capt. Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger safely landed his aircraft on the Hudson River after a flock of geese knocked out both engines. Aaron plays first officer and co-pilot Jeff Skiles opposite Tom Hanks' Sully. The film is based on Sullenberger's 2009 autobiography "Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters." The film just started shooting, and as of this writing, a premiere date had not been set. *** Q: Did they cancel "Person of Interest"? I'm getting nervous because I haven't been able to find it on CBS's fall schedule. -- Paul T., via email A: CBS did renew the crime drama for a fifth season -- a 13-episode order of the series will premiere midseason. Although CBS hasn't yet made its final decision, show runners are approaching this season as if it could be the final one, as executive producer Jonathan Nolan revealed during this summer's Comic-Con. he returned the following year, 1045, and ousted Pope Sylvester III. Later that same year, a pious priest named John Gratian offered Benedict a large sum of money to vacate the post, which he did, allowing Gratian to become Pope Gregory VI. Unsurprisingly, Benedict soon changed his mind, and with Sylvester III still claiming the papal seat, there were now three popes vying for supremacy. Please Support Our Advertisers That being said, look at any new medications (many can worsen GERD); consider weight loss if yours has gone up; and make sure you are eating a good three hours before bed. Alcohol and tobacco are bad for many things, including GERD. Finally, sometimes serious conditions can look like GERD. If symptoms persist, your primary care doctor may send you to a gastroenterologist for an endoscopy. The booklet on acid reflux explains GERD. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 501W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

GERD RELAPSES MAY BE SEASONAL DEAR DR. ROACH: I have some questions about GERD. I was diagnosed 16 years ago and was put on many medications, but I either got side effects or they didn't work. I made up my mind to watch my diet carefully. That has worked well most of the time, but about six weeks ago I started experiencing burning and pain again. I tried eliminating different foods in my diet, but it wasn't working. I visited my primary care doctor and he prescribed sucralfate, four times a day, along with omeprazole twice a day. I've been this treatment a short time, and see a hint of improvement. I don't understand why I went all these years with little pain and all of a sudden I feel like I'm back to square one. The nurse practitioner in the same office said they are thinking GERD is seasonal, just like allergies, and that it should go away. I am very frustrated. I really don't want to have surgery. -- A. ANSWER: I can't tell you why, but I do see people getting exacerbations that last for a few days or weeks, and then they go back to being fine. The nurse practitioner knew something I didn't, because I found evidence that GERD symptoms are statistically worse from October to December. Maybe it has to do with the foods eaten more commonly at that time of the year.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 70 years old, and three and a half months ago, my ENT found a malignant sarcoma at the base of my tongue on the right side. They also found a hint of cancer in the lymph node near the tumor. On Friday I finish up an eight-week treatment of radiation and chemotherapy. My question is what my risk might be for developing other cancers in the future, assuming that this tumor has been eradicated? -- J.K. ANSWER: Congratulations to you and your doctor for his diligence, and I hope your recovery goes well. In general, cancers are more common in people who have had cancer before. The rate of developing second cancers depends on the specific type. There's not a lot written about second cancer after head and neck sarcoma, but what I found suggests that the risk is not terribly high. In general, the younger you are when you develop the first cancer, the higher the risk of a second.

Removing Saturated Fats Reduces Risk of Heart Disease

Beans Help You Feel as Full as Beef Beans will make you feel as full as eating beef, according to a study published in the Journal of Food Science. Researchers served 28 participants equally portioned meals that were either bean- or beef-based and measured satiety ratings at different points after eating. Results showed no difference in satiety or in the amount of food consumed at the subsequent meal. The bean eaters reported their food to be slightly more appealing to see, taste, and smell. Because beans are high in fiber, they not only help you feel full with fewer calories but also improve your glucose metabolism, cholesterol levels, and digestion.

Fruits and Vegetables Aid Weight-Management Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet will help manage your weight, according to a study published in PLoS Medicine. Researchers monitored fruit and vegetable intake for 133,468 participants as part of the Nurses’ Health Study, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and the Nurses’ Health Study II. Increased intake of high-fiber, low-glycemic index fruits and vegetables, including berries, apples, and cauliflower, resulted in more weight loss. Researchers found that over four years about a quarter pound was lost per daily serving of vegetables, and about a half a pound was lost per daily serving of fruit. Consumption of different categories of fruits and vegetables resulted in more pounds lost per daily serving, including green, leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, and cruciferous vegetables. More healthful food choices lead to feeling full quicker with fewer calories ingested.

Replacing saturated fats with healthful carbohydrate-rich foods and unsaturated fats is best for reducing risk for heart disease, according to a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Researchers followed more than 127,000 individuals as part of the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and found that participants who replaced 5 percent of calories from saturated fat with equal calories from polyunsaturated fats, monounsaturated fats, or whole-grain carbohydrates reduced their risk for developing heart disease by 25, 15, and 9 percent, respectively.

Vegan Diets Lead to Healthier Intestinal Bacteria People who eat vegan diets have the healthiest intestinal bacteria, according to a new study published in the journal Gut. The researchers looked at 153 Italian participants, one-third of whom were vegan, vegetarian, or omnivorous, and classified the healthiest eating diets, referred to as Mediterranean diets in the study, as those that included the

Persimmon Sorbet Makes 8 1/2-cup servings KITCHEN DIVA • • • • • Native American persimmon trees produce a more astringent fruit with a bitter taste. As the fruit gets ripe, the tannins that cause the astringency coagulate, the flesh becomes soft and the fruit becomes sweet and juicy.

PERSIMMONS ARE A SWEET LATESEASON TREASURE Persimmons are cold weather treat. In fact, the Latin word for it means "food of the gods." Ripe persimmons are a sweet, orange-red fruit ranging in size from 1 to 3 inches. Persimmons can be consumed fresh, dried or as an ingredient of breakfast cereals, muffins, pies, breads, cakes, salads and puddings. Persimmons begin appearing in markets in October and are available through February. Look for persimmons with taut, glossy skin, avoiding fruit with soft spots or bruises. If persimmons are still firm, store them at room temperature and allow them to ripen. To speed up the ripening process, you can put the fruit in a paper bag with a banana or apple. Store soft, ripe persimmons in the refrigerator until ready to eat. There are two main varieties of Asian cultivars commercially available in the U.S. Hachiya persimmons are tart and chalky until they are extremely ripe, when their interior turns sweet and liquefies. Fuyu persimmons are shaped like tomatoes and are sliced and eaten like apples. Fuyus are sweeter than Hachiyas and can be eaten while still firm.

Sharon fruit is another variety of persimmon -- a small, glowing-orange fruit with a waxy skin and a firmer texture. It gets its name from Israel, where it is extensively grown. It's a little easier to transport than the American varieties because it's not as fragile and has a longer shelf life. It also doesn't have the lush, jelly-like interior of American persimmons. Persimmons originated in China, where over 2,000 different cultivars have been developed. Eventually the tree spread into Korea and Japan. By the middle of the 1800s, the persimmon tree made the journey across the Pacific Ocean to California. The seeds arrived in 1856 with Commodore Perry from Japan, and whole trees were imported to California in 1870.

7 Fuyu persimmons (about 3 pounds), chopped 1 cup water 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup fructose 1 pinch sea salt

In a blender, combine all the ingredients and purée until completely smooth, about 3 minutes. Freeze in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 4 days. After 4 days, the sorbet may become icy; when this happens, the sorbet can be melted and refrozen. Granita-style variation: Pour the blended mixture into a large shallow baking dish and place in the freezer. Stir this mixture every hour for 4 to 6 hours, or until frozen. Cranberry Persimmon Relish

Unripe Japanese persimmons are full of tannin, which is used to brew sake and preserve wood. The small, non-edible fruit from wild persimmon trees in Japan is crushed and mixed with water. This solution is painted on paper to repel insects. It also is thought to give cloth moisture-repellent properties. Leaves of persimmon can be used for the preparation of tea, while roasted, ground seeds can be used as a substitute for coffee.

Makes about 2 cups

Persimmons are high in vitamin A, and are a good source of vitamin C and fiber. Persimmon pudding and cookies are tasty treats. Persimmons also can be pureed and used as a topping for ice cream or cake, or as an addition to rice dishes and fruit salads. This recipe for a Spiced Persimmon Chutney pairs perfectly with Pan-Fried Pork Chops. It's the perfect hearty, cold-weather meal.

Cranberries and fuyu persimmons make a colorful autumn relish in which the sweetness of the persimmons is a perfect foil for the tart cranberries. Fuyu persimmons, which are eaten while still crisp, are sold in many supermarkets and natural food stores. 2 Fuyu persimmons 1 cup fresh or frozen cranberries 2 tablespoons orange juice concentrate 1 tablespoon sugar or other sweetener 1/2 tablespoon ground ginger

Remove stems, then coarsely chop persimmons in a food processor. Add cranberries, orange juice concentrate, sugar or other sweetener, and ginger. Process, using quick pulses, until coarsely and uniformly chopped. Let stand 20 minutes before serving. ORIGAMI

• The traditional origami paper used in Japan is known as “washi,” and is much tougher than ordinary paper. Rather than being fashioned from wood pulp like ordinary paper, washi is made using fibers from the bark of the gamp tree or mitsumata shrub in a long and intricate process. It can also be made using bamboo, hemp, rice, wheat, or the kozo (paper mulberry) tree.

World Origami Days are held October 24 through November 11. Let’s see how much you know about this ancient art. • The word “origami” has its origins in the Japanese language, with “ori” meaning “folding” and “gami” translating “paper.” At one time, it was known as “orikata,” or “folded shape.” The goal of origami is to transform a simple sheet of paper into a delicate sculpture through folding techniques, without the use of glue or cuts. Paper folding that utilizes cuts is referred to as “kirigami.” • Many claim that paper was invented in China around 105 A.D., although some archaeological evidence indicates an earlier date. Early Chinese paper folding was primarily “yuanbao,” paper folded to look like gold nuggets. The pieces were used at funerals as a burnt offering to the dead. China also introduced Golden Venture Folding, in which small pieces of paper are folded into triangular units which are assembled into larger models. • Around the sixth century, paper was introduced into Korea and Japan. Paper was expensive and not readily available to the general public, and consequently, became an art form limited to religious rituals and ceremonies. Early Japanese purification rituals employed the use of zig-zag-shaped paper known as “Shide.” These triangles were attached to straw ropes, to altars, or to wooden staffs that were used as purification wands.

• In the 17th and 18th centuries, origami was used in Germany to produce baptism certificates called “Patenbriefs,” which translates “sponsor letters.” These were 4x4” (10x10 cm) papers, typically given to babies by their godparents. An example of Moneygami • The first documented book published about paper folding was Tsutsumi-no Ki, published in 1764, containing instructions on how to fold 13 different ceremonial folds. In 1797, recreational paper folding became popular and the book Folding of 1000 Cranes was introduced, with lessons on folding interconnecting cranes.

• In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, 250,000 paper cranes, the symbol for world peace, were folded and displayed at a memorial in that city. Each crane had a person’s name on it, along with as a short message. An ancient Japanese legend claims that if you fold 1,000 cranes, you will be granted a wish

• Origami is used at traditional Shinto weddings to fashion paper butterflies to decorate bottles of Japanese sake. The “Mecho” butterfly signifies the female, while the “Ocho” represents the male. A “Tsuki” is a piece of origami that accompanies a valuable gift and can serve as its certificate of authenticity. “Noshi” are attached to gifts, much like we use greeting cards, used as a token of good fortune for congratulatory occasions, such as graduations or promotions. “Noshi” would never be given at funerals or religious ceremonies. The “Tsutsumi” is a formal gift wrapping whose folds symbolize sincerity and purity.

Moneygami is a term that arose as a portmanteau of the words money and origami. It refers to shaping paper currency, into pieces of art. The concept has been popularized by individuals such as Japanese pop artist Yosuke Hasegawa, who has had his work featured at an exhibition at the Tadu Art Gallery, and its creation can function as cultural commendatory on the value that materialistic societies place on money. For example, one piece by Hasegawa involves Chairman Mao's folded head wearing a cowboy hat in a double image, based on Andy Warhol's famous picture of Elvis Presley. (*Wikipedia)

THE BUCKEYES HAVE IT It's the fifth week of the season, and the Ohio State Buckeyes find themselves in a situation they're not familiar with: They're in danger of losing. To the Hoosiers, no less. Ezekiel Elliott, running back for the scarlet and gray, has the answer. He runs for 274 yards on 23 carries, including touchdown runs of 55, 65 and 75 yards, before watching from the sideline as Indiana tries in vain to answer back. Moments later, the Buckeyes run off the field, fingers pointing to the sky. They came onto the field ranked No. 1 in the nation and they ran off the field in the same position. It's nothing new to the Buckeyes. In fact, they've run off the field No. 1 as often as any team in the nation, and by the time you read this, more times than any other program in history. This week finds the Buckeyes on top of The Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the 101st time, tied with Oklahoma for the best ever. Yes, there are other polls. There's the Coaches Poll. The Coaches Poll is nothing but a council of sanctimonious former bench riders who call in plays until they don't. CNN somehow matters in their equation, so I'm already thinking it's suspect. Like I really care if Wolf Blitzer thinks Ball State is displaying game control and might crack the top 20 this week if they try.

But I'd take the Coaches Poll over the alternative, that BCS Computer Robot Poll. Computer polls are the definite worst. It's not that I'm against technology. I am, but it's not that ... it's just that I have scars. It seems like yesterday ... the Nut Swamp Elementary Science Fair. There I was, a can of baking soda in hand, about to drop it into a glass of orange food-colored 7Up strategically hidden within a mound of clay made up to look like a mountain. It was to be a volcano, a glorious volcano. The teachers came over. It was to be my moment of triumph ... but no. They stop next to my table and start to study Brad Mascott's display instead. Brad had a shoebox laid on its side, with the top converted into a keyboard. There was a slot cut on top of the box. "It's a computer," he announced. "Ohhhh!" said the teachers. They gave him the Best in Show. I cried foul. "He doesn't even have FOOD COLORING! OR BAKING SODA!" But it was no use. Times had changed at Nut Swamp. Technology -- in this case, an empty Reebok box -- was here to stay. The volcano era was over. Anyway, those polls are jokes. If you want a poll you can argue over, you need to leave it to the expert non-experts. Leave it to the AP Poll. An old-fashioned poll, comprised of 65 full-time sportswriters and broadcasters who drove to the game in a forest-green GMC truck while smoking Swisher Sweets. Those are the guys you want picking a champion, believe me. And that's the poll that says Ohio State has been the best, for the longest ... or at least since the FDR administration. Say what you want about THE Ohio State University ... just make sure you talk about them like the winners they most often are. Who can argue the facts? she had become an important potter, and her pieces are quite collectible. For example, a vase might sell in the $200 to $450 range, and a punch bowl, $200. If you like your vase, it is worth keeping. *** Q: I have a set of salt-and-pepper shakers that are marked "Desert Sands." What do you know about this company? -- Bill, Tulsa, Oklahoma

"THAT'S AMORE" Q: I have a mint 78-rpm recording of Dean Martin's "That's Amore." Is it worth more than the $5 I paid for it? -- Stan, Sun City, Arizona A: Probably not. Your recording was issued by Capitol Records (Capitol 2589) and hit the charts in November 1953. The song was introduced in the movie "The Caddy." It is not considered rare, and generally sells for $2 or $3 in good condition. Incidentally, the record charted for 22 weeks and quickly became a standard. *** Q: I have inherited a vase that was crafted and signed by Susie Cooper, but I have not been able to find anything about her in any of my reference books. I wonder if the piece is worth keeping. -- Betty, San Diego A: Susie Cooper was a 20th-century ceramic designer who was first affiliated with A.E. Gray Pottery in Henley, England. Some of her very first pieces were made in 1922, but by 1930 she had formed a family pottery business with her brother-in-law, Jack Beeson. Within a decade

A: Not much. During the 1850s, a small pottery company was started in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. During the 1920s, it moved to Las Vegas, where the name Desert Sands was adopted. In 1937, the plant relocated to Boulder City, Nevada, and eventually moved once again to Barstow, California, where it closed during the 1970s. Pieces were identified with stamps and paper labels. I would assume your salt-and-pepper set might be worth about $25. *** Q: I have several thousand matchbook covers. How can I find out how much they are worth? -- Niles, Palmetto, Florida A: One of the better reference books is The Matchcover Collector's Price Guide (2nd edition) by Bill Retskin, available at Amazon.com. You also might look into the Rathkamp Matchcover Society at www.matchcover.org. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. Younger people, however, think it happens as early as the 40s or 50s. Physical therapists, however, put a better slant on it: No matter how old we are -- 60s, 70s, 80s -- improvements can be made in our physical condition, often without surgery or medication. They have a long list of conditions that can be made better with physical therapy: diabetes, arthritis, back pain, knee problems, heart disease, osteoporosis and more.

LET'S GET INTO PHYSICAL (THERAPY) Most of us assume we'll still be living independently at age 80. That's the good news, with 68 percent of us believing we'll be able to do the same types of activities at age 65 and older. But, half of us think we'll lose flexibility and strength as we age. That's the bad news, believing that the loss of physical ability is a given. A study of 1,000 participants by the American Physical Therapy Association shows that even we are conflicted about when we start to show signs of aging. More than half of us believe we start to see signs in our 60s.

Here's what they say we can get out of a course of physical therapy: improve strength and prevent frailty, prevent diabetes with regular activity, improve balance and reduce risk of falls, strengthen bones and reduce the risk of fracture, improve or prevent heart disease, and avoid memory problems. Quite an impressive list. For more information on what physical therapy can do, go online to www.moveforwardpt.com and take a look around the website. Consider asking your doctor if a course of physical therapy might be good for you, even if it's just to learn new and better ways to strengthen muscles and retain flexibility. SEND-OFF PARTY FOR TRICK-ORTREATERS "Oh, you guys are the Halloween family!" is the typical comment Farrells hears when they meet someone new to their block. "It's quite a distinction," says Margo, client director for a marketing-research firm and mom of 8-year-old Arianna, 5-year-old Luke and 2-year-old Colette. Now in its Fourth Halloween season, Margo and her husband, Brad, are making their list for a Costco run to pick up hot dogs, buns, condiments and apple cider for their popular front-yard "pre-trick-or-treat party" that neighbors of all ages consider an annual tradition. "It's an easy way to bring our community together to get to know one another better, have a good time and get some sustenance -- even if it's just a hot dog -- before kids and their parents scatter to go trick-or-treating. We always know the party has an end time, and cleanup is a snap," she adds with a smile.

The party brings out creativity, too. Last year the Farrells added a competitive element, challenging masqueraders to score some costume design points (and bragging rights) from the family panel of judges for funniest, scariest and most original costumes. There's still time to bring the spirit of your community alive with a simple outdoor pre-trick-or-treat party. Talk up the idea with neighbors, and plan the event now. Send out invitations via email, or deliver simple flyers if email addresses aren't available.

We'll also continue with a little friendly competition to encourage you to break out those costumes! Trophies will be awarded in the following categories: --Funniest costume --Scariest costume --Most original costume Date: October 31 Time: 5-7 p.m. Location: (Your address) No RSVP, and no need to bring anything other than you and your fabulous costume! We hope to see you!

Here is the basic format Margo uses: (Your family name)" "Friends and neighbors, it's that time of year again! Please join us for some pre-trick-or-treating fun in our front yard on October 31. We'll have grills set up, and plenty of hot dogs and hot apple cider. Our street will be closed from 5:00 onward so that the kids can run around a bit more safely.
