TIDBITS® LOOKS AT SOME

FORMER TEACHERS by Kathy Wolfe In this isssue, Tidbits investigates well-known folks who were teachers before they became famous. Take a look you might be surprised at who were former educators. • Prior to his role as the fictional Sheriff Andy Taylor in Mayberry, Andy Griffith taught English at the high school in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He was also responsible for creating the school’s award-winning marching band during his tenure from 1949 to 1953.

• Art Garfunkel is more than just a stellar singer/songwriter. He’s also a math whiz who earned an M.A. in the subject from Columbia University, and was working toward his doctorate during the peak of Simon & Garfunkel’s fame. Shortly after the immense success of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” the duo parted ways, and Art branched out into acting, with roles in 1970’s Catch-22 and 1971’s Carnal Knowledge. He also took a position as a math teacher at a private prep school in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1971. It was a little difficult being a pop star math teacher. In Garfunkel’s words, “I would talk them through a math problem and ask if anyone had any questions and they would say, ‘What were the Beatles like?’” • Before he was Mr. T, He was Mr. Tureaud, working as a physical education teacher in the Chicago public schools system. Lawrence Tureaud had his break-out movie role in 1982’s Rocky III after being discovered by Sylvester Stallone, and went on to his role as Sgt. Baracus in the NBC series “The A-Team.” Speaking of Stallone, he also worked as a gym teacher while attending the American College in Switzerland during the 1960s. • Stephen King hasn’t always been a successful author. After his graduation from the University of Maine, he

went to work in an industrial laundry while he jobsearched. He secured a position teaching English at the high school in Hampden, Maine, and worked on a novel during his off-hours. After two years, Carrie was accepted for publication and in 1973, King quit teaching to write full-time. • Author Dan Brown originally wanted a career as a singer-songwriter. He moved to Los Angeles to pursue his calling and landed a position teaching Spanish at Beverly Hills Prep School in 1991. Brown returned to his home town of Exeter, New Hampshire, the following year, where he taught English and Spanish at Phillips Exeter Academy until 1996 when he resigned to devote his full attention to authoring his best sellers The da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons, among others. • History has always been an important part of Bill O’Reilly’s life. The FOX News political program host is the author of several historical best sellers including Killing Lincoln, Killing Patton, Killing Kennedy, and Hitler’s Last Days. Prior to his broadcasting career, O’Reilly was an English and History teacher at Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Opalocka, Florida from 1970 to 1972. • Thirty-sixth President Lyndon B. Johnson was a school principal and teacher of 5th, 6th, and 7th-graders at the Mexican-American Welhausen School in Cotulla, Texas, in 1927 when he was just 19 years old. He went on to teach public speaking at high schools in Pearsall and Houston, Texas, before entering politics in 1937. As a Congressman in 1941, he was the first member of Con-

gress to volunteer for active duty after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He reported to the U.S. Navy on December 9, just two days after the bombing. Johnson was sworn in as U.S. President approximately 90 minutes after President John F. Kennedy was declared dead in a Dallas hospital. He took the oath of office in the conference room aboard Air Force One, as the plane sat at Dallas’ Love Field, the first and only time a President has been sworn in on an airplane. • The second U.S. President, John Adams, also did a stint as a schoolmaster in Worcester, Massachusetts. He found the profession boring and stated that his students were a “large number of little runtlings, just capable of lisping A, B, C, and troubling the master.” Yet he kept the job in order to pay the bills while attending law school. • From 1974 to 1976, Gordon Sumner used his degree from Northern Counties Teachers Training College in Newcastle, England, to teach at a convent school in nearby Cramington for two years, the only male on the faculty. On his free evenings, he played in a group called the Phoenix Jazzmen, and frequently wore his favorite black-and-yellow-striped sweater while performing. The bandleader thought Gordon looked like a bee and gave him the nickname “Sting.” In 1977, Sumner moved to London and teamed up with two others to form the band The Police. Today, Sting’s net worth is estimated in the $300 million range.

Despite his somewhat “demonic” look, Gene Simmons says he has never drunk alcohol, taken drugs, or even smoked a cigarette. • Singer Kris Kristofferson might not have been the successful singer he is today had he not turned down the opportunity to teach Literature at West Point Academy. Kristofferson was a Rhodes Scholar, earning a Master’s degree in English Literature at Oxford, graduating summa cum laude, and even appeared in Sports Illustrated’s “Faces in the Crowd” for his accomplishments in collegiate rugby, football, and track and field. After graduation, he joined the Army and rose to the rank of Captain, completing Ranger training, and becoming a helicopter pilot. At the end of his tour in 1965, Kristofferson was offered a professorship at West Point. At the last minute, he turned down the offer, resigned his commission, and pursued a music career. His family, including his U.S. Air Force Major General father, disowned him and never reconciled with him.

• We know him best as the bass player of the band KISS, with his face painted white with black flames. But prior to his musical fame, Gene Simmons was a teacher of sixth-graders in a Harlem, New York, grade school. Simmons was born Chaim Witz in Israel to a mother who had survived the Holocaust. The two of them emigrated to New York City when Simmons was eight years old, without knowing a word of English. (This musician now speaks English, Hungarian, Hebrew, and German.) KISS, formed in 1973 in New York, has sold over 100 million albums worldwide, and has 45 gold albums to date.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

JOHN SPILSBURY For literally hundreds of years, people of all ages have enjoyed putting jigsaw puzzles together. Here’s the history of this favorite pastime.

the top seller, as retailers continued to stock mostly wooden puzzles, believing that customers liked them better than “cheap” cardboard varieties.

• Born in England in 1739, at age 14, John Spilsbury became an apprentice to Thomas Jeffreys, an engraver, map seller, and the Royal Geographer to the King. At 21, Spilsbury branched out on his own as an engraver, mapmaker, and printer of children’s educational books, maps, charts, and stationery.

• The puzzles of the early 20th century did not interlock, and many an hour’s work was negated by a bump to the table. Adult puzzles of this era did not have the picture on the box and the subject matter was a mystery until all the pieces were in place.

• In 1766, when he was 26, Spilsbury devised the idea of mounting maps on a sheet of hardwood. Using a fine-bladed marquetry saw, he cut around the borders of the countries, with the goal of teaching Geography to British students. He called his invention “Dissected Maps,” and became the first commercial manufacturer of jigsaws. Over the next two years, he marketed several different styles, including the world, Africa, America, Asia, Europe, England, Wales, Ireland, and Scotland. Unfortunately, Spilsbury did not live to see the great success of his invention, passing away at age 30. • For the next 50 years, the puzzles were primarily an educational activity. They gradually transitioned into a leisure pastime, with illustrations mounted on plywood. They were still known as “dissections,” but when the treadle saw was introduced around 1880, they began to be called “jigsaw puzzles.” Penciled tracings of where to cut the pieces were made on the back of the wood. • In the late 1800s, cardboard puzzles made their debut, mostly for children’s puzzles. For many years, they were not

• Early puzzles were quite expensive, as much as $5 for a 500-piece puzzle in 1908, because each piece was cut individually. Cardboard puzzle quality improved and prices dropped with the invention of a device that would die cut them in a press. Strips of metal with sharp edges were fastened to a plate, much like a cookie cutter, enabling the mass production of puzzles. • During the 1930s, puzzles were a method of advertising, with stores offering free puzzles with the purchase of a toothbrush or other sundry item. The illustration featured an image of the product, a clever way for manufacturers to keep a vision of their item in the consumers’ minds. Puzzles were especially popular during the Great Depression as an inexpensive form of entertainment. Sales of adult puzzles were an astounding 10 million per week. Puzzles were also something that could be made by hand at home by those who could not afford the store-bought kinds. • Today, people enjoy jigsaw puzzles more than any other table game. • The record for the most pieces assembled together in a single jigsaw is 209,250, an event that took place at Taiwan’s Grand Formosa Regent Hotel.

HOLLYWOOD -- Gary Busey's recent behavior on "Dancing With the Stars" was deemed very odd by many, bordering on scary. His stints on "The Celebrity Apprentice 4 and 6" had us all believing he was a little off the beam due to that motorcycle accident that flung him headfirst into a wall, requiring his head to be wired to his neck with a cage around it to recover. The 71-year-old Oscar-nominated actor (for "The Buddy Holly Story" in 1978) went on to star in "Lethal Weapon" ('87), "Point Break" ('91), "The Firm" ('93) and 133 other films. After being eliminated from "Dancing With the Stars" in his fourth week, Busey reported for work in Sacramento, California, on producer/writer Rick Kuebler's film "Mamaboy," in which Busey plays a baseball coach whose star player is hiding the real reason he's gained so much weight in his stomach area. Actors, fans and spectators were treated to a very amiable, willing and star-like Busey, who not only signed every autograph requested, but posed for every selfie as well. He also was heard dispensing sincere advice to young actors in the cast on how to make their way through the film and television industry. Cast and crew alike came away with the impression that his reputation for being unpredictable could well be an act that has served him well in promoting this part of his career. *** When Rob Reiner stopped making us laugh as Meathead to Carroll O'Conner's Archie Bunker in "All in the Family," he continued to act but also turned to directing great movies such as "Stand by Me," "When Harry Met Sally," "Misery," "A Few Good Men" and "The American President," to name a few. He's currently shooting the bio-film "LBJ," about former President Lyndon Baines Johnson. He's cast Woody Harrelson as LBJ, Jennifer Jason Leigh

as Lady Bird Johnson, "Burn Notice" star Jeffrey Donavon as President John F. Kennedy, Kim Allen as Jackie Kennedy and Michael Stahl-David as Robert Kennedy. Doug McKeon, rarely seen since "On Golden Pond," in which he played opposite Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and Jane Fonda, is playing LBJ's vice president, Hubert H. Humphrey. Filming has begun, and it is shooting in New Orleans; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Dallas; and Washington. No release date yet. *** Bridget Jones fans rejoice! Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth currently are shooting "Bridget Jones's Baby" and will be joined by "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey. Why do a third installment after 12 years? "Bridget Jones's Diary" earned $282 million in 2001, and "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason" (2004) earned $263 million. If you could make a baby that could earn a quarter of a billion dollars, wouldn't you? (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I love ABC's new series "Blood and Oil." The actor who plays Don Johnson's son in the drama looks familiar. What else has he done? -- Eric P., Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Despite the star power of Don Johnson, Amber Valletta and Chace Crawford, ABC recently announced that it has cut back its original order of "Blood and Oil" from 13 episodes to 10, which could mean that this first season of "Blood and Oil" very well might be its last if there isn't a drastic upturn in its ratings. Look for season one to air its finale in December. *** Q: I just found "Mike and Molly" on reruns, and I love the show. Please tell me it has not been canceled. If not, when will it return for a new season? -- Tony O. in Florida A: The hit CBS sitcom starring Melissa McCarthy and Billy Gardell will be back for a sixth season. While the network (as of this writing) has not yet announced a premiere date, it will be toward the end of this year, so keep an eye on your local TV listings. Scott Michael Foster

A: Scott Michael Foster is the fellow you're thinking of. The 30-year-old actor was a regular cast member on "Greek," spent a season on "Californication" as Becca's boyfriend who Hank couldn't stand, was on "Once Upon a Time," and "Chasing Life." Now he plays Hap Briggs' (Don Johnson) ne'er-do-well son, Wick, on the nighttime sudster. He recently wrapped on the feature film "My Dead Boyfriend," which was directed by Anthony Edwards and also stars Heather Graham, John Corbett and Gina Gershon.

*** Q: Can you give me an update on Masterpiece Mystery's "Sherlock"? I can't wait for this series to start back up again! -- Diana T., via email A: While season four of the series doesn't start shooting until spring 2016, we do have a TV special to tide us over. Called "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride," Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman reprise their roles of Sherlock and Watson, respectively, to bring us this 90-minute movie. It will premiere on Jan. 1, 2016, in both the U.S. and U.K. -- a first for this series, as the U.K. usually airs the series first -- at 9 p.m. ET, as well as online at pbs.org/masterpiece. *** Q: Where has Chris Vance and his series "Transporter" gone? Will TNT air season three? If he is not involved with the series, what is he doing now? -- Laura B., via email A: As of this writing, TNT has not announced whether "Transporter: The Series" will be back for a third season. However, if you need your Chris Vance fix now, he has a recurring role on CBS's "Supergirl" as the villain Non. His first appearance is in episode eight, which airs Dec. 14. • The second and third books in the series followed in 1998 and 1999. When the fourth book, Goblet of Fire was released in 2000, its first-day sales were nearly as much as the first year’s sales of the second book, Prisoner of Azkaban. During its first 48 hours in the U.S., three million copies of Goblet were sold, breaking all records.

Tidbits continues celebrating former teachers by focusing on author J.K. Rowling, who has been wildly successful with her Harry Potter series of books. • The life of Joanne Kathleen Rowling has been a true “rags-to-riches” story. Born in 1965 to a Rolls-Royce aircraft engineer father and science technician mother, Rowling went from receiving welfare benefits as a single mother to being a multi-millionaire in just five years.

• The sixth book in the series, The Half-Blood Prince, went on sale in 2005, with U.S. sales of nine million copies in the first 24 hours. The seventh and final book, The Deathly Hallows, was released in 2007, breaking all previous records with 11 million books the first day. The books have now been translated into 65 languages.

• Shortly after the death of her mother from multiple sclerosis in 1990 when Joanne was 25, she answered a newspaper ad for an English teacher in Portugal. It was while working at a language institute in that country that she began penning the stories that would become the series about a young wizard. She claims she was on a four-hour-delayed train trip when the idea “came fully formed” into her mind. • Her teaching duties were in the evenings, freeing up her day to write, which she did while listening to the music of Tchaikovsky. She married and had a child in Portugal, but after three years, she was back in England as “poor as it is possible to be in modern Britain, without being homeless.” • Two years later, Rowling finished typing the manuscript on her old manual typewriter and went looking for a publisher. Twelve publishing houses rejected the story of Harry Potter. Finally, in 1997, a London publish-

• Rowling sold the film rights to Warner Brothers and the first of eight films premiered in 2001. It took 10 years to complete the filming of the series. The first movie was to be directed by Steven Spielberg, but he declined the offer. It was his thought that the series should be animated films, with American actor Haley Joel Osment voicing Harry Potter. Rowling had specifically demanded that the principal cast be British.

It may be that the position is difficult, but a surgeon should still evaluate you, in my opinion. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: How is it that, at age 67, I'd never heard about the abomination called scabies? Last year, I was rubbing cream onto my aged mother's rash, and now I have this disgusting infestation on my body! Why haven't people been advised of this scourge! -- Anon.

Large Teratoma Found Near Heart DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a CT scan due to broken ribs from a very recent fall. The scan revealed a large teratoma near my heart. I am 69 and was previously unaware of this formation. No suggestion has been given to me regarding further investigation or treatment of the teratoma. I am assuming it may have been present at birth and does not cause any problem. But now I am wondering if it should be monitored. Can a teratoma grow or migrate in the body? Any information on teratoma will be appreciated. -- S.S. ANSWER: A teratoma is a type of tumor of germ cells -- the cells that become eggs or sperm. They can occur within the testis or ovary, but also can occur outside the gonads. When they do, they usually are found in the midline of the body. A frequent place is the anterior superior mediastinum, in between the lungs and below the breastbone. Teratomas usually are benign tumors, but some types can act like cancers. Your tumor is unlikely to have been there since birth. Nobody knows whether the germ cell that became a teratoma properly went into the gonads during development, or whether the cell left the gonad and then became a tumor. It is clear, however, that men with teratoma outside the gonads are at higher risk for developing testicular cancer later on.

ANSWER: Scabies, sometimes just called, "the itch," is caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, and is very common, with an estimated 300 million people infected worldwide. It is transmitted person-to-person by direct contact. The major symptom of scabies is itching, often very severe and usually much worse at night. Itching begins about six weeks after the first infection, sooner if you have been infected before. Often, the hardest part is figuring out the diagnosis, because a lot of people don't know about this condition. When the rash is classic in distribution (belt line, under the arms, wrists, genitals and especially in the finger web spaces), most regular doctors and any dermatologist can figure it out.

Permethrin 5 percent cream (Elimite and others) over the entire body for eight to 14 hours is the standard treatment. Many physicians recommend a second treatment in one to two weeks. There is an oral medication as well. Clothing and bedding need to be disinfected, too. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Vegan Diets Lead to Healthier Intestinal Bacteria People who eat vegan diets have the healthiest intestinal bacteria, according to a new study published in the journal Gut. The researchers looked at 153 Italian participants, one-third of whom were vegan, vegetarian, or omnivorous, and classified the healthiest eating diets, referred to as Mediterranean diets in the study, as those that included the most fiber-rich foods—fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. Eighty-eight percent of the vegans adhered to the healthiest patterns, 65 percent of the vegetarians, and 30 percent of the omnivores. The more adherence to the healthy dietary pattern, the healthier the intestinal microbiota. Healthy gut flora are associated with decreased risk of disease.

Increased Dietary Calcium Intake Not Linked to Fracture Prevention Increasing dietary calcium does not prevent bone fractures, according to two meta-analyses published in the British Medical Journal. Researchers from New Zealand reviewed the existing literature to assess current calcium intake recommendations. The first examined controlled trials and observational studies on dietary and supplemental calcium intake and fracture prevention and found no consistent evidence showing calcium or dairy intake prevent bone fractures. The second meta-analysis showed a very modest increase in bone strength through increased calcium intake or supplementation; too small to suggest any reductions in fracture risk. An additional editorial called for more research to de-emphasize high intakes of calcium without the evidence to support them. The author recommends health organizations reconsider the evidence to produce more practical guidelines free from marketing bias and that minimize side effects.

Colorful, carotenoid-rich foods, such as carrots and spinach, protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD), according to a study published online in JAMA Ophthalmology. Researchers monitored the diets of 102,046 participants from the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and incidence for AMD. Those who consumed the most carrots, tomatoes, spinach, oranges, and other foods rich in carotenoids, specifically lutein and zeaxanthin, experienced up to 35 percent lower risk for AMD, compared with those who consumed the least. Researchers suggest public health policies call for increased consumption of fruits and vegetables to maximize lutein and zeaxanthin consumption for their protective qualities.

Access to Healthful Food Improves Childhood Bone Development Access to healthful food outlets improves bone mass in children, according to a study published in Osteoporosis International. Researchers monitored bone mineral density and content for 1,107 children in the U.K. as part of the Southampton Women’s Survey and compared those findings to the types of food outlets in the area. A pregnant woman’s exposure to fast-food restaurants was associated with lower bone mass

For every fast-food outlet, bone mineral content decreased in infants while every health specialty food store increased it in 4 to 6 year olds. This study shows that greater access to fruits, vegetables, and other healthful foods for both mothers and their children leads to better bone health throughout childhood and suggests that policymakers apply these findings to future urban planning. So I conducted my own poll. I asked my mom what she thought when she thought of the Cowboys. "Cheerleaders" was her reply. First answer on the board. Dad? "Staubach." And he didn't stop there. "They changed the name from 'Dallas Cowgirls' to 'Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders.' How stupid was that? The Dallas Cowgirls were on the 'Love Boat' every week!"

Fine, America. If you want the Dallas Cowboys as your team, then know their heroes. "Dandy" Don Meredith, Roger Staubach, Drew Pearson, Tony Dorsett, "Too Tall" Jones, Terrapin Randy White, QB Danny White ... the Dallas Cowgirls ... Tom Landry.

By Chris Richcreek 1. How many consecutive major-league seasons has Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle recorded 30 or more starts? 2. During the 1990s, four men managed the Kansas City Royals. Name them.

AMERICA'S TEAM

Equipped with the fact that the "Love Boat" was the highest attainment for anything, I called my sister. "I say Dallas Cowboys, you say what?" She says, "football." I say, "OK, let's try this again. Cowboys." "Football," she answers.

If America has a team, it's always going to be the best dressed. Or at least the one with the best color scheme.

My sister is a smart person. She eventually mutters some stuff about cheerleaders. I let her off the hook.

6. Belgium's Eddy Merckx, in 1970.

(c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

And don't kid yourself. That team that wears a green, orange or purple ensemble? It's not America's team. The matter of dress matters. Never forget that. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

For your consideration, I offer the Dallas Cowboys. When you first think "Dallas Cowboys," what is the first image that comes into your mind? Don't wait for the translation. Just answer. It's that blue star in the middle of a silver helmet. Then it's the white jersey -- played home and away when handled correctly -- and a few icons at running back and quarterback. According to a new Harris Poll, the Dallas Cowboys are truly "America's Team" once again. They are far and away the favorite among adults 30-64, Southerners, blacks and Hispanics. I never knew that they were not America's team, but I can tell you that I know why they are. Dallas is a great town. The Ticket, by the way, is the best sports-radio station in America, hands down. Any station that broadcasts "Michael Irvin's School Closings" is far and away very very funny. Also, YouTube its Trump vs. Cuban debate. It only has a few thousand views, and that's a shame. It's an instant classic. Dallas is like a lot of cities, but unlike any other. It's as if Atlanta and Kansas City had a big baby. It's everything you think Texas is and less. It's big and boisterous, but kind of polite when needed. It is positive and can-do (not Kansas City), but it also is truthful to your face and confident (not Atlanta). And it has the Cowboys. The Texas Rangers are not America's team. The Dallas Stars aren't even covered or discussed in San Antonio or Houston. The Dallas Mavericks are Germany's favorite team, maybe. But the Cowboys regulate.

*** Q: I received a Breitling Navitimer wristwatch from my dad when I graduated from college in 1968. When I took it to be cleaned, the watchman told me it was quite valuable. My big question is how valuable. It is the model 606, with three registers and in a stainless-steel case. - Rob, Camden, Ohio

SMILEY FACE Q: I have a "Happy Face" mug from the 1970s. Is it worth keeping? -- Stephanie, Englewood, Colorado A: The little happy face on a bright yellow circle has become totally synonymous with the 1970s. The smiley face was first introduced as a morale-building button by a Massachusetts insurance company. It was the right product at the right time and soon was seen everywhere. The image was used on neckties, coffee mugs, toys and fabric prints. Typical values for smiley face items include a deck of playing cards, $10; coasters, set of four, $8; cookie jar, $50-$100; electric wall clock, $20; and ceramic mug made by McCoy, $25. A good reference for items from this era is "The Collectible '70s: A Price Guide to the Polyester Decade" by Michael Jay Goldberg.

A: I found your watch referenced in "100 Years of Vintage Watches: A Collector's Identification & Price Guide" by Dean Judy and published by Krause Books. According to Judy, a watchmaker/ jeweler and expert, your watch is valued in the $1,000 to $1,800 range. Incidentally, the watch was sold as the "Official Timepiece of the Aircraft Owners' and Pilots' Association."

*** Q: I have a plastic thimble with "Sew It Up for Nixon & Lodge: Experience Counts." What is it worth? -- Sue, Davenport, Iowa A: Your thimble is from the 1960 campaign and worth about $10, according to Dr. Enoch L. Nappen, a political science professor at New Jersey's Monmouth University and an expert of political campaign materials. *** Q: I have inherited a set of sterling flatware in the Hamilton Court pattern by Reed & Barton. When was it introduced, and is Reed and Barton an important company? -- Cynthia, Fort Wayne, Indiana

If you pick up the phone and press a number to ask to be removed from the list, no one will answer, and you've only verified that your number works.

ROBOCALLS ARE MORE THAN ANNOYING We've all experienced it: We rush to answer the phone, and it's a robocall, a computer-generated message trying to sell us something or tell us a lie. We've won a free cruise. We've won a big lottery prize. Our "warranty" is about to expire. There are any number of reasons to hate robocalls, but for seniors there are two serious ones. We could fall as we dash to the phone. And we might get caught up in whatever scam is involved in the call.

If you select another number to press to talk to someone to ask to be taken off the list, you get added to a special list of people who actually answer the phone and are immediately transferred to someone who gives you the sales pitch. If you hesitate even for a second in saying no, you go on a list of people are not only answer the phone, but press buttons to talk to people and who can likely be sold whatever they're selling. Do you see where this is going? The answer is: Do not answer the phone if you don't recognize the number. One difficulty in combatting robocalls is that the scammers behind them are hard for authorities to trace. They could be anywhere in the world, and they ignore the Do Not Call registry. If you're particularly annoyed by these robocalls, go online to the government site at www.consumer.ftc.gov and search for robocalls. Or look at Consumer Reports robocall information at consumersunion.org/end-robocalls and consider signing the petition. You also can call the Federal Trade Commission at 1-888-225-5322. FALL LEAF PLAY Romping in the rain decked out in rubber boots and raincoats is a happy pastime for Canadian-born Melissa Oliveri and her 5-year-old son Luca. And when the leaves change color, it's even more of an adventure, especially when the falling leaves in their neighborhood are Melissa's beloved maples, the symbol of her homeland. Pockets full of colorful maples are often the centerpiece of fun learning activities when they get home -- like creating an artful version of the Canadian flag. Noting the 11 points on the leaf, they sandwich it between pieces of adhesive-backed, self-laminating sheets and glue it to the center of a large sheet of white art paper. Melissa draws two vertical red lines from top to bottom on the paper, about two inches from the side edges of the leaf. Luca fills in the two borders with red markers, crayons or paint, and it's ready to hang. Explore the magic of leaves and other nature finds where you live this week. Here are two more ideas:

SWIMMING IN THE LEAVES If raking the yard is on your to-do list, set out your kiddie pool before you store it for winter, and fill it to overflowing with fallen leaves. Luca enjoyed active afternoons as a preschooler "swimming," "splashing" and "kicking" in the contained space of crackly red and gold leaves, while Melissa and her husband got the raking done.

PRESS AND FRAME First, press a variety of shapes and colors of leaves. Spread them out on smooth paper towels. Place heavy books on top and let the leaves dry for a couple of days. Remove books and gently remove leaves. Or, simply press them in pages of a phone book. Group them together in an inexpensive poster frame, and display in a prominent place in your home. If you have a collage-style frame with outdated or faded photos, remove them and frame different leaves in the square and/or oval sections of the matting. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide.
