• The Tournament of Roses Parade was first held in Pasadena on New Year’s Day, 1890, and included horsedrawn carriages covered in flowers. The parade was followed by foot races, polo matches, and a tug-of-war contest. In 1902, the parade was followed by a football game for the first time, considered the first “Rose Bowl.” However, football games post-parade have only been an annual event since 1916. Today’s Rose Parade route is 5.5 miles (8.9 km) long and includes marching bands, horse units, and flower-covered floats. Famous parade Grand Marshals have included Dwight D. Eisenhower, Bob Hope, Richard Nixon, Shirley Temple, Frank Sinatra, and Sandra Day O’Connor.

• Although the Macy’s Parade has been a Thanksgiving morning fixture since 1924, it wasn’t the first. Gimbel’s, a Philadelphia department store, was ahead of them by four years, sponsoring the first parade in 1920. Macy’s, however, became the one to watch, adding the first of their famous colossal helium balloons in 1927, a giant Felix the Cat. By 1933, more than a million people lined the parade route. As popularity grew, more balloons were added – Mickey Mouse in 1934, Superman in 1939, Popeye in 1957, and Hello Kitty in 1976. Other notable characters include Curious George, Scooby-Doo, Mr. Potato Head, and Snoopy and Woodstock.

• Look out below! On a rainy Thanksgiving in 1957, as Popeye floated above the New York City crowd, his cap filled up with rain, and dumped its contents on parade-goers below. In 1994, the purple Tyrannosaurus Rex Barney veered off course and ran into a lamp post, causing a large tear in his side. Luckily, Barney was the only one injured. Not true three years later, when the Cat in the Hat struck a lamp post, flinging fragments to the street and striking a spectator, resulting in her skull fracture and a month-long coma. • Ticker-tape parades are a well-known occurrence in New York City. The first such event took place in 1886 and honored the dedication of the Statue of Liberty. Back then, 1-inch (2.54 cm) strips of paper were used to print stock quotes from the ticker machine. Many of the offices along the Broadway parade route were stock brokers and threw the tape out of their office windows on those below, giving the tradition the name of ticker-tape parade. When the stock ticker was replaced with electronic boards in the 1960s, folks used shredded paper and confetti. • The mayor of New York City is the one who decides who receives the honor of a ticker-tape parade. The route is called Canyon of Heroes and winds from a section of lower Broadway through New York’s financial district. Each honoree has a black granite marker embedded in the sidewalk along the route, inscribed with the date and description of the achievement. Astronauts, military personnel, athletes, and political dignitaries are among those who have been honored.

• Theodore Roosevelt was paraded upon his return from an African safari in 1910, Charles Lindbergh was hailed following his trans-Atlantic flight in 1927, and war generals Eisenhower and Nimitz were celebrated after World War II. Astronaut John Glenn was honored in 1962 and the Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were showered with confetti upon their return from the world’s first walk on the moon in 1969. Only one pope has received a New York ticker-tape parade, Pope John Paul II in 1979. • Although often associated with athletic success, the first athletes weren’t honored in a ticker-tape parade until 1924, with the return of the Olympic team from the games in Paris, where Johnny Weissmuller won three gold medals in swimming and Harold Osborn was a hero in track and field. Since then, several Olympic teams have been heralded, as well as the New York Yankees, the World Series Champions seven times, the New York Mets as Series winners in 1969, and the New York Giants football team. In 1957, Wimbledon Champion Althea Gibson, the first person of color to win in professional tennis, was paraded and remains the only tennis player to be honored as such. • Athlete Jesse Owens faced extreme racial prejudice when he traveled to the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. He proved his worth when he took the gold medal in the 100-meters, 200-meters, long jump, and relay team, the first American track and field athlete to win four golds in one Olympics. The racial prejudice continued on the home front when Owens had to ride the freight elevator at New York City’s Waldorf-Astoria Hotel to a reception following a ticker-tape parade honoring his victories. He later said that Franklin Roosevelt “snubbed me. The President didn’t even send me a telegram.” • The person honored with the most New York parades is explorer Richard Byrd, with three. The first was in 1926 after he achieved the first flight over the North Pole. The next year, his transatlantic flight was commemorated, and in 1930, the parade saluted his flight over the South Pole and his first Antarctic expedition.

• It required 466 sanitation workers to clean up 56.5 tons of paper after the parade following the Yankees World Series victory in 2009. • The largest amount of paper thrown was in 1945, when a ticker-tape parade was held to celebrate the Allied victory over Japan. 5,438 tons of paper streamed out over Broadway, 100 times more than the average parade. • There have been 206 ticker-tape parades since 1886, including the most recent for the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team in July, 2015, the first non-New York-based team to receive a parade. The price tag for that parade was about $2 million. • In 1919, the community of Lodi, California, held a parade honoring soldiers who had returned from World War I. A California entrepreneur named Roy Allen mixed up a formula for root beer he had purchased from an Arizona pharmacist and sold it on a street corner during the parade for a nickel a mug. The beverage was so popular that before long, Allen had expanded to four sites, which eventually evolved into drive-ins. In 1925, he took on one of his employees Frank Wright as a partner and the pair began offering franchises under the name A&W. The company is the oldest franchise restaurant in the country with more than 1,100 locations in 10 countries.

JOYCE HALL HALLMARK CARDS

• On August 29, 1861, an evangelist visited David City, Nebraska. The local Methodist minister hosted the visit, and it happened that the minister’s wife gave birth to a baby boy that day. The baby was named in honor of the evangelist, whose name was Mr. Joyce. In the 1800s, Joyce was a common name for a boy. • Joyce Clyde Hall grew up going by his initials, ‘J.C.’ When J.C. was 18, he started producing picture postcards, launching the Norfolk Postcard Company and hawking his wares to shops in the area. Business was good, and his two brothers joined him in business. • In 1915 disaster struck when a fire burned the business to the ground. He decided to rebuild, and it was an opportune time to make changes. First, he changed the name of the company, incorporating his last name in a play on words. Second, he decided to abandon picture postcards and to manufacture greeting cards instead. His was the first greeting card company to display cards on racks so people could browse through them. Previously, store clerks selected a card from behind the counter or from the back of the store. Sales soared because of this simple innovation. • By 1923 the company had 120 employees, thriving during the Great Depression. By the time J.C. died in 1982 at the age of 91, his company was worth over $1.5 billion. Today, over 14,000 designs are printed every year, designed by 450 artists. More than 10 million cards are sold annually around the world. • In 1928 Hall Brothers became the first greeting card company to advertise nationally when the company placed an ad in “Ladies’ Home Journal.”

• Hallmark started using their famous slogan in 1944: “When you care enough to send the very best.” • The company now employs over 10,000 full time people worldwide including over 500 artists who work on developing products. • More than 30,000 retail outlets sell Hallmark products. • About 10,000 new products are released annually, and Hallmark has about 49,000 products available at any given time. • The word ‘hallmark’ originates from the Goldsmith’s Hall in London which was the site of the assay office. Items made of gold or silver would be stamped with a mark that guaranteed their authenticity, and from there the word came to mean a mark of quality. • About 60% of all seasonal cards sold are Christmas cards. After Christmas, the most popular holidays to send cards are Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Easter and Father's Day. • 90% of Americans buy at least one greeting card per year. • About one-third of the cards a typical American receives are birthday cards. About 60% of non-seasonal cards are birthday cards, followed by anniversary, get well, friendship and sympathy. • The most popular recipients of seasonal cards are parents. The most popular recipients of non-seasonal cards are friends. • Americans purchase nearly 7 billion greeting cards every year.

In 1980, James Garner played sick when he felt Universal TV was using creative accounting to cheat him out of millions of dollars of profits from "The Rockford Files." Universal sued him, claiming his "sick strike" cost them $9 million. The suit dragged on for nine years, but Garner was vindicated to the tune of $14 million. *** President Barack Obama recently presented 17 Presidential Medals of Honor. HOLLYWOOD -- Reese Witherspoon will produce and star in a film based on Robin Gerber's 2010 book, "Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World's Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her." Reese will play Ruth Handler, who was inspired to create the Barbie Doll after seeing her daughter playing with paper dolls modeled after infants. She wanted her daughter to become a woman with choices, so she found an adult novelty toy overseas and remodeled it into Barbie. As luck would have it, her husband was the president of Mattel Toys, which gave birth to Barbie in 1959. *** Emily Deschanel, David Boreanaz, author Kathy Reichs and executive producer Barry Josephson have filed lawsuits in Los Angeles Superior Court against 20th Century Fox TV, the producers of "Bones." The plaintiffs contend they were cheated out of tens of millions of dollars in profits from the series via self-dealing and misallocation. The lawsuit claims that as the series became more profitable for the studio, accounting statements showed them falling further and further from achieving profits. The plaintiffs claim that Fox withheld key documents, and an audit discovered "more than a dozen accounting errors, tricks and deceitful acts."

Rio·s Pet Spa & Boarding Q: I saw a commercial for a new TV series with Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, and it looked REALLY good. What can you tell me about it? -- Danny T., via email A: In "Shades of Blue," which premieres Thursday, Jan. 7, at 10/9c on NBC, Jennifer Lopez stars as New York detective Harlee Santos, a single mother who runs with a group of dirty cops, taking her cut of the bribes and protection money to give her bright and promising daughter a leg up for a better future. However, she is caught by the FBI, which forces her to turn informant on her cop family to save herself. The cop drama also stars Drea de Matteo ("The Sopranos") and Dayo Okeniyi ("The Hunger Games"). I recently spoke with Dayo, and he gave me the inside scoop on the series: "When the show starts, it's my character's (Michael Loman) first day as a detective. And a lot of stuff goes down. And over the course of 13 episodes, we get to really learn the truth of what it's like to be a detective in modern America. I just love the script. When writers are that good, your job is very simple." Dayo tried not to fan-geek out too much while working with the legendary Ray Liotta (who plays Lt. Wozniak), telling me: "Ray Liotta is 100 percent one of my top ten favorite, most dynamic actors of all time. And 'Goodfellas' is one of my favorite movies. If Ray Liotta tells you in a movie, 'Let's go for a ride,' you're going to die. So, I remember reading one of the drafts, and Wozniak comes up to Loman, and he's like: 'Loman, put down the phone. Let's go for a ride.' And I was like, 'Oh my God! Am I going to die?' That was really cool. And I'm pretty sure I'm the first person to go on a ride with Ray Liotta and not die."

CHRISTMAS SEALS Most of us have licked a Christmas seal and attached it to our holiday greetings at some point over the years. This week, Tidbits brings you the history of this little stamp. • In the early 1900s, tuberculosis, or consumption as it was frequently called, was the leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 110,000 every year. This infectious disease, which attacks the lungs, was being spread through coughs and sneezes and any other respiratory fluids found in the air. • The first signs of success with the disease were achieved by isolating patients in sanatoriums. In 1907, a small sanatorium in Delaware was experiencing an extreme financial shortfall and would have to shut down if $300 could not be raised to save it. A doctor at the facility explained the dilemma to his cousin, Emily Bissell, who regularly volunteered there. • Emily, who was an experienced fundraiser, had recently heard about an effort in Denmark that raised money for children with TB. A Danish journalist who had lost six

Four million seals were sold in Denmark that first year, 1904. The idea seemed perfect as a fundraiser for the tiny Delaware sanatorium. • Emily sketched a few designs, finally settling on a cross centered in a half-wreath of holly above the words “Merry Christmas.” She borrowed $40 to have 50,000 seals printed and campaigned vigorously for the cause, using the slogan “Stamp Out Tuberculosis!”, even winning the endorsement of President Theodore Roosevelt.

tion for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis and the American Red Cross. Norway, Sweden, and Iceland quickly followed Denmark’s example as well, and in the years following, the Seals had spread throughout every major country in Europe, followed by Canada, Asia, Africa, South America, and Australia. The seals began including the international symbol against TB, the double-barred cross of Lorraine in 1919, a symbol still in use on current seals. Today, there are nearly 100 lung associations around the world that issue Christmas Seals. 1914 American Red Cross Christmas seal

• On December 7, 1907, a table was set up in the Wilmington, Delaware post office. The seals were also offered with newspapers. Another printing was necessary when the first one ran out. Selling the seals for a penny each raised over $3,000 during that holiday season. • By the following year, Emily’s Christmas seals had grown to a national program directed by the National Associa-

This wouldn't be noteworthy, of course, except for the fact that he was assassinated at the motel that same evening. * It was noted 20th-century British playwright Tom Stop-

However, you might be surprised to learn that it was sometimes rubbed on a person's forehead to relieve a headache.

However, the self-assessment health stations at the grocery store and the YMCA are set up to use the left arm to measure blood pressure. -- C.R.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an older male, with irregular heartbeat. I am on medication for it. Will having sex put too much strain on the heart or cause further problems? -- Anon. ANSWER: This is a common concern, and fear of heart attack or other problems often keeps couples from sexual intercourse when one or both have heart issues. In most cases, the risk is low. I can't tell you in your particular situation, but your cardiologist or regular doctor can answer your question. People at moderate risk include those with a recent heart attack, with stable angina or with multiple cardiac risk factors. Those at high risk include people with unstable, recurrent angina, uncontrolled high blood pressure, severe heart failure and high-risk irregular heart rhythms, such as ventricular tachycardia.

ANSWER: There usually is only a small difference between the left and right arm blood pressure, so it is OK to use whichever arm is easiest for you. There are some automatic blood pressure cuffs that are designed to be on the left arm, probably because most right-handed people have an easier time manipulating the cuff with their right hand. A human is more accurate than most machines.

If there is a significant (greater than 10 mm Hg) and consistent difference in the left arm from the right, that could indicate an abnormality such as a coarctation of the aorta. This is a congenital constriction of the aorta, the major blood vessel of the body. Fortunately, this is pretty uncommon to find in adults nowadays. High blood pressure is one of the most common ailments for the general population. The booklet on it describes what it does and how it's treated. Another Hospital Boots McDonald’s to Improve Patient Health Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Featured in the Physicians Committee’s 2015 Hazardous Hospital Foods Report, Ends 25-Year McDonald’s Contract WASHINGTON—Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn., will end its lease with the fast-food restaurant McDonald’s on May 31, 2016. The decision comes a year after the Physicians Committee—a nonprofit of 12,000 doctors—brought attention to Abbott and other hospitals with McDonald’s contracts in the report Hazardous Hospital Foods: How Fast Food Jeopardizes Public Health. “Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s decision to ban Big Macs is a boon for patient health,” says Angie Eakin, M.D., a physician at the Barnard Medical Center. “Fatty

Three other hospitals featured in the Physicians Committee’s report have also ended contracts with McDonald’s this year. In September, Cleveland Clinic, the nation’s top hospital for heart health announced the termination of its decades-old contract with McDonald’s. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Texas have also ended partnerships with the fast-food chain. A study in the journal Public Health Nutrition found that on days that people eat fast food they consume significantly more calories and saturated fat. Another study in the American Journal of Public Health concluded that hospital food is “a largely untapped resource for public health that may help to arrest increasing rates of obesity and diet-related health problems.” A study in the journal Pediatrics found that the presence of a McDonald’s restaurant in a children’s hospital in-

creased the purchase of food at the on-site McDonald’s. The location of a McDonald’s inside a hospital was also associated with a more positive perception of the healthfulness of its food. Herbal Vinegars Make Great Gifts Herbal vinegars are a wonderful gift from the kitchen. They're delicious when sprinkled on salads, vegetables or broiled meats. You can use either fresh or dried herbs, or fresh or frozen fruit when preparing the vinegars. Pouring heated vinegar over herbs that have been slightly crushed helps extract the flavor of the herbs. Almost any type of vinegar with at least 5 percent acidity may be used, except malt vinegar. The flavor of malt vinegar is too strong to blend well with herbs or fruits.

Publix Shopping Center

After preparation, herbal vinegars should be stored for one to three weeks in a cool, dark place to allow the flavors to mingle. Herbal vinegars will keep indefinitely, and they make great homemade gifts. (Do not make herbal oils for gifts. Unlike commercial oils, homemade herbal oils lack enough acidity to preserve them. Homemade herbal oils also tend to turn rancid and may cause botulism.) Decorative bottles like those used for wine or bottled water are perfect containers for your herbal vinegars. Sterilize the bottles or jars with boiling water before using them. Line bottle caps or jar lids with a piece of foil, or place a piece of foil over the mouth of the jar or bottle to prevent the cap from rusting. Bottles with a cork or cruets also are perfect containers. Place a decorative label on the bottle or jar describing the herbal ingredients used. Containers may be decorated by tying a raffia bow, a few herb sprigs or dried flowers around the neck of the bottle or jar. Wrapping strands of brightly colored yarn or strips of festive wrapping paper that have been dipped in glue also add a decorative touch.

HERBAL VINEGAR •

2 cups vinegar (distilled white, cider or wine)

4 to 6 tablespoons of fresh or dried herbs (tarragon, chive, basil, marjoram, dill, sage, rosemary, savory, mustard or bay leaves, in combination or alone)

1. If using fresh herbs, rinse them and pat dry with a paper towel. Bruise herbs with a mortar and pestle or by rolling over them once or twice with a rolling pin. Place herbs in a sterilized jar. 2. In a small, non-corrosive saucepan, heat vinegar until it is warm to the touch, but not hot. If using a microwave, place vinegar in a glass bowl and heat on low power for about 30 seconds. Pour the vinegar over the herbs. Let the mixture cool.

3. Place a piece of foil over the mouth of the jar and seal it tightly. Label the jar and place the herbal vinegar in a cool, dark place for at least 7 days and up to 3 weeks so that the flavors have a chance to mingle. 4. After the flavors have infused, place several layers of cheesecloth inside a funnel and strain the vinegar into a sterilized bottle or jar. Leave at least an inch free at the top of the bottle if inserting a cork or glass stopper. Makes 2 cups. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Her new cookbook is "The Kitchen Diva's Diabetic Cookbook." * When the holidays come around, we use fresh herbs to make several family recipes, but end up with lots left over. Here is a great tip I found online to stretch the usefulness of fresh herbs: "Store fresh herbs as you would fresh flowers: in a jar of water on your countertop. His very smart mother pulled out a sock and slipped it over the doorknob, then secured it with a wide rubber band. Even I was unable to get a good grip on the doorknob after that!" -- V.R. in North Carolina * Surprise guests? Here's an idea, taken from a recently released study: Walk a block, remember a name. While we know that exercise benefits us both physically and mentally, this new study pinpointed one specific area that exercise can help: We'll remember the names that go with faces.

Can't Put Name With Face? Try Exercise With the New Year fast approaching, many of us are pondering whether we should attempt a resolution. Do we diet, or read a book a week, or volunteer at a charity? Do we get fit?

The small study, aided by notables such as Boston University School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School, included younger participants ages 18-31 along with seniors ages 55-82. All were given the standard set of tests for function and memory. Parts of those tests were facename memory. At the same time, participants were carefully tracked for total step count and the step rate using an ActiGraph, a tracking gadget worn to monitor resting and awake-time activity.

pacted by physical activity, the seniors were -- and the strongest exercise-memory link was with "face-name relational memory and visual episodic memory," in other words, putting the correct name with the face. What was key in this study was the ActiGraph. Instead of using self-reported information ("I walked 7,943 steps today"), the monitor was able to pinpoint exactly what was done, and when. While this study isn't the final word, it's a clear indication that exercise of some kind can impact memory. What researchers will try to identify next is the specific types of exercise (aerobic versus strength training), and at what frequency and intensity. Meanwhile, knowing this, perhaps we can make a New Year resolution to be a bit more active. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

JOHN WOODEN'S SETS OF SUGGESTIONS

Wooden on Success Recently we shared Vince Lombardi's famous "What it takes to be No. 1" speech in this space. Knowing bulletin boards and locker-room walls like I do, I'm betting you have enough space up there for another guy's take on the subject of winning: John Wooden. What does it take to have to back-to-back seasons without a loss and win 10 championships in 12 years? Well, for one thing, it took a guy like John Wooden. As a child his father gave him seven rules to live by that he would later distill down into three main rules that his players must follow in order to play for him: 1. Don't be late. 2. Don't curse. 3. Don't criticize your teammates. At the heart of Wooden's philosophy is one word: respect. His three rules were about respecting the program, the coach (him) and each other. Whereas Lombardi makes the case that winning is always better and it is something that each individual must strive for at all times -- fairly, but brutally if need be -- Wooden's famous "10 rules for success" state that if you do the right things all the time, you will end up winning most of the time. But the "Wizard of Westwood" would go on to write an even more expansive set of "suggestions" that incorporated both his father's and his own set of rules. Following these rules, he promised, might lead to success if put to use. He was wrong: They led to unprecedented success.,

VOGUE DOLLS Q: I collect Vogue dolls, and I wonder if there is a good reference book so I can establish values for the ones in my collection. -- Stella, Naperville, Illinois

*** Q: I have a print dated 1892 entitled "Columbus on His Return." Although it has stains and several small tears, it is in fairly good condition. It was published as a supplement of the Daily News in New York. Does it have any value? -- A Reader in Florida A: Probably not very much. Even though your print is more than a century old and interesting, it remains a page from a newspaper that is of less than desirable quality. I would suspect it might be worth about $50 to a collector.

A: One of the better reference books is the "Collector's Encyclopedia of Vogue Dolls," by Judith Izen and Carol Stover, published by Collector Books. THE SALVATION ARMY IN BROWARD COUNTY USES THE RED CHRISTMAS KETTLES TO RAISE FUNDS TO SUPPORT HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES AND OTHER LOCAL PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

On the Stage Landing he saw a large pot, called “Simpson’s pot” into which charitable donations were thrown by passers-by. The next morning, Captain McFee secured permission from the authorities to place a similar pot at the Oakland ferry landing, at the foot of Market Street. He secured the pot and placed it in a conspicuous spot, so that it could be seen by all those going to and from the ferry boats. In addition, a brass urn was placed on a stand in the waiting room for the same purpose.

THE ORIGINS OF XMAS KETTLES Church groups, Rotary, Kiwanis and other service minded organizations volunteer during the holiday season to ring the bell and raise much needed support for the Army. In 1891, Salvation Army Captain Joseph McFee of San Francisco wanted to provide a free Christmas dinner to the area’s poor. But how would he pay for the food? As he went about his daily tasks, the question stayed in his mind. Suddenly, his thoughts went back to his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England.

A: The solution may be easier than you imagined. Rub candle wax or soap on the runners that seem to be sticking. This should correct the problem. *** Q: My late granddad was a fabric colorist who worked in Hollywood during the 1930s and '40s. I have a large collection of his textiles but have no idea of what to do with the fabrics. -- Laura, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma A: Your textile collection sounds interesting. I have two sources that might be helpful: Charlotte Marler, char_ marler@hotmail.com, 212-367-8808; and Cora Ginsburg, www.coraginsburg.com. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@aol.com. Thus, a tradition was launched that has spread not only throughout the United States, but also around the world. By Christmas, 1895, the kettle was used in 30 Salvation Army Corps in various sections of the West Coast area. The Sacramento Bee in that year carried a description of the Army’s Christmas activities and mentioned the contributions to street corner kettles. Shortly afterward, two young Salvation Army officers who had been instrumental in the original use of the kettle, William A. McIntyre and N.J. Lewis, were transferred to the East. They took with them the idea of the Christmas Kettle. In 1897, McIntyre prepared his Christmas plans for Boston around the kettle, but his fellow officers refused to cooperate for fear of “making spectacles of themselves.”

So McIntyre, his wife and his sister set up three kettles at the Washington Street thoroughfare in the heart of the city. That year the kettle effort in Boston and other locations nationwide resulted in 150,000 Christmas dinners for the needy. Kettles now are used Korea, Japan, Chile and in many European countries. Everywhere, public contributions to the kettles enable The Salvation Army to bring the spirit of Christmas to those who would otherwise be forgotten — to children, the aged and lonely, the ill, the inmates of jails and other institutions, the poor and unfortunate in the Untied States. The Salvation Army annually aids more than 3,000,000 persons at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Kettles have changed since the first utilitarian cauldron set up in San Francisco. Some of the new kettles have such devices as a self-ringing bell and a booth complete with public address system over which traditional Christmas carols are broadcast.

tally ingest tinsel or other shiny strands. Dogs may gnaw on interesting packages or break into gift boxes of candy or fruit. Even plants need to be kept out of reach: poinsettias, for example, are toxic to cats.

Beware Holiday Foods, Ornaments, Plants DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Please remind your readers of how important it is to keep their pets away from holiday foods. Some foods, like chocolate, can be deadly poisonous to dogs, while rich foods and ingredients like onions or raisins can be dangerous for cats and dogs. -- Jessica L. in Camden, New Jersey DEAR JESSICA: You told them, and thank you! The holiday season, with plenty of parties, family and food, can be hectic for everyone, but it's important to monitor pets and make sure they're kept away from potentially harmful items. Many foods, not just chocolate but onions, grapes and raisins, nuts, avocados and other common holiday foods can cause house pets great harm. Store them well out of reach and keep pets out of the kitchen when cooking, and away from serving tables. A more extensive list is available from the Humane Society of the United States. Christmas tree ornaments can potentially be harmful. Cats love knocking down glass ornaments and also may acciden-

To minimize risk, place breakable ornaments higher in the tree and put plants well out of reach. During parties or dinners, place your pets in a separate area of the house with bedding, food and water, and check on them occasionally. (This also is helpful in keeping pets' stress levels down.)

Why Are Cats Such Finicky Eaters? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I find it weird that my two dogs, "Shep" and "Bull," can eat just about anything (I have to hide all the pet food), while my cat, "Trudy," will turn up her nose at most food. And although she's perfectly healthy, sometimes she gets sick after eating wet or fresh food. Why? -- Sarah in Madison, Wisconsin DEAR SARAH: Cats' eating behaviors have long been a source of curiosity for both pet owners and the scientific community. Why do they turn their nose up at certain foods and chow down on others? Why do they sometimes throw up after eating? Why do they gnaw on grass when they're meat-eaters? The answer is: It's complicated, and no one is entirely sure. A recent study, for example, found that cats have some genes that are more commonly possessed by herbivores (animals that eat only plants, like cows). These particular genes help them detect bitter flavors, alerting them to potentially poisonous plants.

This research opens a new avenue into understanding why cats are more picky about their food than dogs -- also meat-eaters -tend to be. If cats are detecting a bitter taste in their food then they may be less inclined to eat it. And, a bitter taste also may trigger a vomiting response to safeguard against ingesting what is perceived to be poison. The study's results could lead to changes in how commercial producers formulate

their cat food. Whether that is a good thing remains to be seen. In the meantime, feeding a finicky cat remains a trial-and-error process. Try small amounts of different foods -- dry, wet and fresh -- and note Trudy's likes and dislikes. Send your questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
