options. Valid at participating locations. Valid Jan. 4-Feb. 29, 2016.
• National Kazoo Day will be celebrated on January 28, commemorating this member of the membranophone musical family. The player hums into the kazoo, which modifies the voice through a stretched vibrating membrane. This interesting instrument made its U.S. debut at the Georgia State Fair in 1852 as the “Down South Submarine,” the brainstorm of an African-American named Alabama Vest and a German-American clockmaker, Thaddeus Von Clegg. Production for the masses didn’t begin until 1912. You can visit the kazoo museum in Eden, New York, which also functions as a factory.

• Go ahead. Make someone’s day by giving them a compliment on January 24, National Compliment Day. Researchers have discovered after monitoring activity in the brain’s striatum, that receiving a compliment registers the same effects as receiving a cash award or gift. If you’re looking for a means of motivating someone, give it a try! • January 6 is Epiphany, observing the day that the three Wise Men reached the site of Jesus’ birth in Nazareth. Considered the last day in the Christmas season, it’s often called the 12th day of Christmas. In some cultures, it is the day for the annual blessing of homes. Residents will use chalk to write the letters “CMB” on their doors, symbolizing the initials of the names traditionally ascribed to the three kings. • Glaucoma Awareness Month was created to inform people of the risks of this potentially-blinding eye disease. The damage is the result of fluid build-up in the area in front of the eye called the anterior chamber. When the fluid builds up and the pressure rises inside the eye, it can harm the optic nerve, resulting in eye pain, blurred vision, loss of peripheral vision, tunnel vision, and potential blindness. There is no cure, and the damage cannot be reversed. Although anyone can develop glaucoma, people over 60 are more prone to it, particularly African-Americans and Latinos. Those with high blood pressure are also at an increased risk. Regular eye exams are critical since the disease can progress slowly with no symptoms and vision seems normal until it is too late.

OBSERVANCES (continued):
• Be sure to celebrate Fig Newton Day on January 16! We’ve been eating Fig Newtons since 1891 when the first of these little pastries were baked at the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery, a Cambridgeport, Massachusetts-based company. James Henry Mitchell had invented a machine with a funnel system that pumped fig paste into pastry dough. The cookie took its name from the nearby community of Newton, Massachusetts. Since 2012, the cookies have been known simply as Newtons. • January is National Polka Music Month, honoring this European dance music that originated in Bohemia. The term for this Czech peasant dance has its origins in the Czech language’s word Pulka, meaning “half-step,” a characteristic of this 2/4 time dance. The dance migrated from villages into Prague ballrooms in 1835, and on to Paris in 1840, where it became extremely popular. Eastern European immigrants to America originally brought the polka to the Midwest and Great Lakes area. Typical instruments in a polka band might include a clarinet, saxophone, tuba, accordion, and concertina, along with a rhythm section. • The first transcontinental telephone call, occurred on January 25, 1915, during the Panama-Pacific Exposition celebrations. Scientist and inventor Alexander Graham Bell, initiated the call from New York City and repeated his famous statement: "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you" into the telephone, which was heard by his assistant Dr. Watson in San Francisco 3,400 miles away. Dr. Watson replied, "It will take me five days to get there now!"

The call officially initiated AT&T's transcontinental service. Later, President Woodrow Wilson spoke to an audience in San Francisco from the White House and is quoted as saying "It appeals to the imagination to speak across the continent." However, President Wilson was concerned with the "devaluation of the individual" as AT&T celebrated the achievement of the company rather than distinguishing individual inventors, contributors, and innovators. The transcontinental telephone line was first completed on June 27, 1914, and successfully first voice tested in July 1914. A 1998 U.S. postage stamp commemorates the completion of the line in 1914 • Speaking of dancing, the week of January 11 – 17 is National Cuckoo Dancing Week. This observance is in honor of the comic duo Laurel and Hardy. The thin Stan Laurel (born in Lancashire, England) and the heavyset Oliver Hardy (born in Harlem, Georgia) teamed up in the late 1920s with a slapstick comedy act. Appearing in 107 films together, they used a tune known as “The Cuckoo Song” (or “The Dance of the Cuckoos”) as part of the opening credits of their movies.
and white teas all come from the same shrub, black tea is more oxidized than the other three. The invention of the tea bag came about by accident. In 1904, a New York tea importer was looking for a cheaper way to send samples to customers. Thomas Sullivan had been using tin boxes, but as this proved expensive, he began wrapping the tea in small silk bas. His customers didn’t realize that the bags were just packaging, and brewed their tea in them. Soon after, Sullivan was receiving orders for the new product. Today, 96% of the world brews its tea using a tea bag. The average cup of black tea contains between 40 and 120 mg. of caffeine, with green tea total 60 mg., depending on how long the bag is steeped. • On January 19, 1937, Howard Hughes went into the record books with the fastest flight from Los Angeles to New York City. He flew the 2,490-mile (4,000-km) distance in 7 hours, 28 minutes, and 25 seconds, with an average speed of 332 mph (535 km/h) in his Hughes H-1 racer. This flight broke his own previous record of 9 hours, 26 minutes, and 10 seconds.
• The Ford Motor Company paved the way for better working conditions on January 5, 1914, when it announced an eight-hour workday for its employees and a “living wage” of a minimum of $5 for a day’s labor. This was more than double the wages of most of the workers. Henry Ford hoped this action would help reduce his company’s high turnover rate, while retaining the best employees, a goal that was achieved. • January is National Hot Tea Month! Did you know that tea is the world’s second most popular and cheapest beverage (after water)? Every day about three billion cups of tea are consumed around the world. In America, it can be found in 80% of households, and an estimated 127 million Americans are drinking it on any given day. Most of that tea comes from India, the world’s largest tea producer, processing about 850,000 tons each year. More tea drinkers sip black tea than any other type, 90% of total tea consumption. Although black, oolong, green,

UNUSUAL ANIMALS:
PENGUINS January 20 is Penguin Awareness Day and what better time to make our readers aware of this flightless bird’s characteristics! • It’s a common misconception that penguins are found only in Antarctica. They actually live on every continent in the Southern Hemisphere – Australia, South America, Africa, and Antarctica. The first written mention of penguins was in a diary from a member of the crew on Vasco da Gama’s 1497 voyage around the Cape of Good Hope, an entry that mentioned large flightless birds. The first published account of a penguin was written by Antonio Pigafetta, a crewman aboard Ferdinand Magellan’s ship during the explorer’s first circumnavigation of the world in 1520. The writer referred to the penguins as geese. • It’s also a myth that penguins have to live in a cold climate. The Galapagos Penguin lives on tropical islands near the equator. Larger species of penguins dwell in the colder climates because their body size enables them to survive in the conditions. Warmer climates are home to smaller penguins. • There are 19 documented species of penguins, varying in size and appearance. The smallest is the Little Blue Penguin, standing about 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall, weighing only 3 lbs. (1.4 kg). The largest species is the Emperor Penguin, which can reach a height of 44 inches (112 cm) and weigh up to 90 lbs. (41 kg). Some species are strictly black and white, while others have orange and yellow markings on their little tuxedos. • Although penguins have wing-bones, they are more like flippers, making the birds very quick swimmers, able to swim up to 22 mph (35 km/hr).
• Penguins spend about 75% of their lives in water, where all of their hunting is done. They don’t swim out into deep water, since their prey – krill, fish, and squid – is within 60 feet (18.3 m) of the surface. Most sea animals rely on a layer of blubber to stay warm, but penguins are able to endure the cold because their feathers trap a layer of warm air next to their skin that serves as insulation. Some species have four layers of feathers to keep them warm in the cold waters. Every year, penguins undergo molting, when all their old feathers are replaced by new ones. Most birds molt a few feathers at a time, but penguins do it all at once, and because they are not waterproof during this time, must remain on land for two or three weeks until the process is complete. • Penguins have a special oil gland that produces waterproofing oil that further insulates their body as well as improving their glide through the water. • Even though they’re carnivores, penguins don’t have teeth! The inside of the mouth is lined with fleshy spines that guide the fish down their throat. They swallow their prey whole as they swim. • Many species live in large groups, numbering in the thousands, called rookeries. Even in this huge community, every penguin has a distinct call and can find its mate or chicks in the crowd. Most penguins are monogamous and breed with the same mate for most of their lives. The Emperor Penguins have just one egg each breeding season and keep it warm on the top of their feet under a fold of skin containing a high concentration of blood vessels that keep the egg incubated. The Emperor has a long life span, up to 50 years.

*** While we're on the subject of weird characters, "Absolutely Fabulous," the British comedy series starring Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley (it ran from 1992-1995 and in 1996, was revived in 2001 and ran until 2004, as well as three new episodes filmed in 2012), is being revived as a feature film opening July 1 in the U.K., with U.S. dates still to be set. In the film, Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Lumley) retreat penniless to the French Riviera, where they meet 100 drag queens, Lulu, Kate Moss, Rebel Wilson, Kim Kardashian West, Dame Joan Collins and "Glee's" Chris Colfer. As the name says ... you know it will be "Absolutely Fabulous."

HOLLYWOOD -- There has been talk for years about Barbra Streisand directing and starring in the remake of the musical "Gypsy," but she appears to be considering a lesser project for the moment. Streisand -- who directed "Yentl," "The Prince of Tides" and "The Mirror Has Two Faces" -- is considering directing an episode of the CBS show "Life in Pieces." Yes, you guessed it ... the star of the show is her husband, James Brolin. He revealed, "I originally proposed that she might direct one, but she said maybe in the second season." Streisand has visited Brolin on the set many times and has talked with producer Jason Winer, who admits, "We've talked about a couple of different possibilities. I think it would be fun to have her play a weird character who is nothing like her." But Brolin says, "The best bet is to nab her as a director." Given her track record, they'd be wise to have her direct if they plan to have her act. After all, what episodic television director could direct Barbra Streisand, a known perfectionist?

Q: I saw a commercial for a travel show with Rachel Hunter. Can you tell me what that's about? -- Sara T., via email A: Starting Sunday, Jan. 17, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, Ovation TV is airing a 13-part series starring Ms. Hunter called "Rachel Hunter's Tour of Beauty," in which the supermodel takes viewers on a whirlwind world tour in search of the secrets to beauty, longevity and living happier and healthier lives. I spoke with Rachel about her new show recently, and she told me what we can expect: "We'll get a broad view of the world and have a look at the different cultures, different religions and different ways of life. India has a wealth of ancient ways; China has a wealth of ancient ways and knowledge," Rachel said. "We hear about coconut water; we hear about chia seeds. Everyone is on this big kick for longevity and wellness, but what do they actually do? We explain some of those superfoods, how they can actually help us and how long have they been helping us." One of the main reasons she is so pumped about this series is because of all the things she learned while making it. Rachel told me: "On my journey, the biggest thing I learned is that until you walk in someone else's shoes, you can't judge them. How can I possibly say, 'Well, you need to fall in love with yourself and spend some time and do this and do that'? Who am I to say that when I spent 20 years of my life on magazine covers. I've always thought that you can look in the mirror and you can look beautiful, but you actually want to love the person looking back at you. Beauty is multifaceted." *** Q: I finally finished binge-watching "Lost" on Netflix, and I'm eager to see more of Josh Holloway. Can you tell me what he's doing now? -- Kendra T., Webster, New York

DRAGONS January 16 is Appreciate a Dragon Day, and while Tidbits isn’t exactly sure how a person does that, we’re happy to provide some information about these mythological creatures. • The ancient Greek word draconta, meaning “to watch” is the source of our word “dragon.” This is thought to suggest that the dragon guards valuable items. • In mythology, dragons were viewed as powerful, destructive, and frightening, needing to be conquered and slain. Battles between heroes and dragons are symbolized as good overcoming evil. The ancient Greeks described them as huge flying serpents. In some myths, they have wings, while others don’t; some speak, some don’t. Their dwelling place varies from caves to under the ocean to inside mountains. • In the Bible’s Book of Job, the dragon is described as having a double coat of armor, with its back consisting of “rows of shields tightly sealed together.” Referred to as Leviathan, its mouth is “ringed about with fearsome

Regarding its fire-breathing abilities, Job stated, “Its snorting throws out flashes of light, flames stream from its mouth, sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke pours from its nostrils…its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.” • Dragons in the Bible are frequently identified with Satan. Many scholars maintain that the fire-breathing feature stems from representations of the mouth of Hell, with flames and smoke characteristic of Hades. Legends depict righteous saints defeating Satan in the form of a dragon. • The legend of St. George the Dragon Slayer tells the story of the people of Selene, a city in Libya, plagued by a dragon that lived in a nearby lake. Every day, the townspeople would feed the dragon two sheep to satisfy it. When there were no more sheep, they had to feed their children to the beast. The children were chosen by lottery, and one day the lot fell on the King’s daughter. The King offered gold, silver, and half of his kingdom to spare his daughter, but the townspeople refused. As the princess stood by the lake, ready for the sacrifice, St. George happened to ride by. Protecting himself with the sign of the cross, (symbolizing the triumph of the
* It was noted 20th-century French-Swiss film director, screenwriter and critic Jean-Luc Godard who made the following sage observation: "A story should have a beginning, a middle and an end, but not necessarily in that order."
* If you live east of the Rocky Mountains, you've probably spent summer evenings watching the flashing green or yellow lights of those beetles we call fireflies.
• Not all cultures regard the dragon as evil or frightening. China and Japan paint dragons in a positive light, as symbols of wisdom, happiness, fertility, and longevity, believed to bring good fortune and wealth. Statues and carvings are commonplace, and images of dragons often embellish garments. • German legend has it that the blood of a dragon has the power to make a person invincible if the skin or armor is bathed in it. A Slavic myth testifies that dragon blood is so abominable that Mother Earth will not allow it to be absorbed into the ground, and the blood remains above ground for all eternity. Another saga tells of the blood of the dragon having acidic qualities that killed the hero who had just slain the dragon when the blood accidentally dripped on him. • Children’s films have depicted dragons both as frightful and friendly. How to Train Your Dragon and Pete’s Dragon featured lovable dragons, while Disney’s 1959 Sleeping Beauty proved to be one of the studio’s scariest creatures.
* In some parts of colonial America it was illegal to kiss your spouse in public.
You might be surprised to learn, though, that different species have different colored lights. For instance, the Paraguayan railway beetle can show both green and red lights (like a railway lantern; hence, the name). * According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are currently more than 1,500 American residents named "Seven."

* The Taj Mahal (left), widely known as "the jewel of Muslim art in India," was commissioned in 1632 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who wanted the tomb of his favorite wife to be housed in splendor. After construction was complete, Jahan wanted to ensure that this architectural wonder would never have a rival, so he had the chief architect and main artisans put to death. The stone masons who had done the best work on the structure had their hands amputated, and the artists responsible for the delicate inlay work were blinded.

Receiving a call from a debt collector can be an emotional and stressful experience. Debt collectors that treat you with disrespect violate the law. Debt collectors who are dishonest violate the law. Stop being a victim! Sue the Debt Collection Agency for money damages under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
DID YOUR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS BECOME UNMANAGEABLE? DOES YOUR DEBT SEEM OVERWHELMING AND COMPLEX?
Relax! You have options that may either stop the foreclosure, reduce the amount that you owe or waive portions of your debt.
It can be illegal for Debt collectors to call you repeatedly on your telephone. Debt collectors can call once to determine your proper contact information, only once. Their contacting your family, friends, co-workers, neighbors or employer about money you owe may violate the law. Debt collectors are not allowed to use abusive and obscene language or racial/ethnic slurs in an attempt to shame you into paying your debt, doing so is a violation of the law.
Our Attorneys can guide you through the litigation process and take advantage of these alternative resolutions.
FREE CONSULTATION 305-639-5195
The Fair Debt Collection Act protects you from these violations. These are just a few illegal collection practices that could lead to money damages of $1000 or more as well as the payment of all your attorney fees and costs.
At Civil Justice Advocates our primary focus is YOU! t Foreclosure Defense t Debt Settlement t Bankruptcy t Short Sales t Asset Protection t Loan Modifications t Real Estate t Transactions & Contracts t Landlord/Tenant t Civil Litigation t Immigration t Family: Surrogacy, Adoptions & Divorces t FDCPA & TCPA: Defend against abusive collection practices & robocallst Wills, Trusts & Probate
STOP BEING A VICTIM – SUE THE DEBT COLLECTORS Every person is entitled to be treated with respect, told the truth, and be free of undue harassment and other unethical practices by debt collectors. For example, Debt Collectors may not contact you at unreasonable times or places; such as, before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., unless you agree. The use of auto-dialers or robo-calls is strictly prohibited when calling your cell phone. Debt Collectors who are calling you to try to coerce you into paying your deceased relatives’ debts are acting outside the bounds of the law – sue them. Lying about possible consequences; such as, threatening to throw you out of your house, or send you to jail or otherwise threatening you with other dire consequences are legally impermissible. A course of action you could take is to sue the debt collector and possibly collect money damages. Infractions of the Fair Debt Collection Act (FDCPA) can lead to an award of money damages and the payments of your attorney fees and costs as a result of a successful prosecution of the case in federal court. In other words, it cost you NOTHING to sue debt collectors.

E. Main Street, No. 7, Scottsdale, AZ 85251; 480-9455432; www.territorialindianarts.com and territorialarts@aol.com. *** Q: I have a collection of about 65 back issues of Reader's Digest from the 1930s, '40s and '50s. Are they worth keeping? -- Sally, Cheyenne, Wyoming
COLLECTOR PLATES Q: I have a set of eight collector plates, all featuring locomotives. Do they have any value, and where would I sell them? -- Steve, Mason City, Iowa A: There seems to be a glut of collector plates, and selling them is more than just a little difficult. Almost every antique mall I visit has stacks of these plates, many in original boxes and most with socalled certificates of authenticity. My suggestion is to show them to dealers in your area to see if there is any interest. *** Q: I have three Native American baskets that were purchased on the Navajo Reservation in Northern Arizona during the 1930s. Can you recommend someone who can help me place a value on them for insurance purposes? -- Laura, Sierra Vista, Arizona A: Deborah and Alston Neal are owners of "Territorial Indian Arts & Antiques," a Scottsdale business since 1969. Alston is the basket expert, and he can help you. This is one of the better stores dealing in Indian crafts and antiques that I have found, and it has an international reputation. Contact is 7077
A: Although the issues might be interesting, they don't seem to be of much interest to magazine collectors. While other publications from this same period such as Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Look and Life are considered quite collectible, the older issues of Reader's Digest sell for only $2 or $3 depending on condition and content. Based on this information, only you can determine if your copies are worth keeping. *** Q: When I was in grade school during the 1950s, I received a pack of 12 pencils with the Coca-Cola logo. I got them as a prize for a spelling contest. Are they rare, and should I keep them? -- Carol, Tyler, Texas A: According to "Kovels' Antiques and Collectibles Price Guide" by Ralph and Terry Kovel (Krause Books), your pencils are worth about $30. To a Coca-Cola collector, perhaps even more. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. 1. Wash greens thoroughly: Remove any brown spots or blemishes, and wash the greens in cold water approximately 3 or 4 times to ensure they are clean and free of insects. Roll the cleaned greens up and slice them into smaller pieces so they'll cook evenly. Remove and reserve any large stems. 2. Using a large pot, season the onions with salt and sweat them in the olive oil over low heat for about 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the garlic, jalapeno, sugar, salt and pepper to the pot, and saute the mixture for about 5 minutes. Add the greens and water to the pot and continue cooking for 45 minutes to 1 hour over medium-low heat, stirring once after about 30 to 40 minutes.
DOES EATING GREENS BRING IN THE 'GREEN'?
3. Test the greens for tenderness by piercing the stems with a fork or knife. Cook for another 10 to 15 minutes, if needed. Season with the remaining salt and pepper. Place the greens in a bowl with the pot liquor. Serve with the sun-dried tomatoes and the oil, if desired, and the traditional Southern condiments: vinegar, hot sauce, hot peppers in vinegar, or wine vinegar, and chopped onions.
For many people, the new year is a time for making resolutions and eating certain foods for "luck." On New Year's Day, eating greens, black-eyed peas and cornbread are thought to bring financial reward. While I'm not superstitious, I do believe in the health benefits of eating greens. Greens include any vegetable in the cabbage family that doesn't form a compact head, like collards, mustards, turnips, spinach and kale. There are several varieties of tasty and unusual types of greens, so be bold and experiment! Dark, leafy greens such as spinach, kale, collards and mustard greens are an excellent source of many nutrients. Greens contain high amounts of vitamin A and iron, as well as some calcium. Greens also are packed with antioxidants and are a wonderful addition to any diet. If the stems of the greens are tough, don't throw them away. There are nutrients in the stems, so chop them up into small pieces and freeze them. You can add the stems to soups and stews, saute them with your onions or add them to various dishes just the way you add in carrots.
meal for the next. My vegetarian version for preparing a mess of greens retains the flavorful soul of the recipe, but is much healthier. While I don't personally believe in luck or eating certain types of food on the first day of the new year, a dish of dark, leafy, deliciously fresh greens makes me feel blessed all year long!
MESS OF GREENS •
Pot liquor, the highly seasoned liquid that is left after the greens are cooked, is full of vitamins and minerals and is a nutritious drink. The practice of combining different types of greens is called a "mess of greens" in the South. Cooking a mixture of greens along with pieces of pork is an integral part of African and African-American culinary history. During times of slavery, if greens were served one day, the leftover pot liquor and a pan of cornbread often made the

LIFESTYLE CHANGES AND SOCIAL SECURITY With a new year it's time to get organized, and Social Security should be at the top of the list. If we've had any changes in our lives that could affect our benefits, we need to tell officials right away if we collect retirement,

Sources say prep is the step that makes it work. Clean, chop, slice and otherwise prepare all your produce choices for the week on the day you shop. When it's ready and waiting, you're less likely to skip it in favor of something more convenient (and likely less nutritious). * To save a pot of burning soup, remove from the burner and DO NOT stir. You can get an idea of what you eat, what times of the day you are overeating and the areas where you can make improvements. Knowledge is power!" -- V.R. in Oregon * Remember that as temperatures drop and layers of clothing increase, children in a car seat need special consideration. Remove heavy coats before strapping in a small child or baby. Winter wear can compress during an accident, and it interferes with the straps. * Wondering what winter fruits and vegetables are in season? Here's a sampling: apples, dates and pears, as well as citrus, like grapefruit, oranges and tangerines. For vegetables, consider endive, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, kale, leeks, mushrooms, parsnips, radicchio, rutabagas, sweet potatoes, turnips, yams and winter squash. * Don't store propane tanks in the garage or shed. Propane has a freezing point of -310 F, so tanks can stay outside year-round. Even a small leak can build up in an enclosed space, so be sure to keep those tanks outdoors! * If you want to keep pots and pans looking great, spray off residue as soon as you can after cooking. Use the heat from recently turned-off ovens to loosen stuck-on bits. Get a plastic scrubbie, which will not damage the finish on your pots. For cast iron, scrub with salt for abrasiveness, but not soap. Coat with oil and wipe dry.

For the uninitiated, Pete was an all-star baseball player (17 times!) who hit a ball with a stick more times than any player in history. But Pete bet on baseball, and he was kicked out of the game in the past century. For some reason, that means people get to talk about him more than any other baseball player in history. And I'm not sure we really understand why it matters.
THE MOST RELEVANT MAN IN SPORTS Is there any drama in sports bigger than the one between Major League Baseball and Pete Rose? The answer to that question depends on how you define drama, granted. And a lot of football fans will point to the equanimity amongst division rivals as a good example of drama. I disagree. Football has been figured out. Get an offensive line that can protect your quarterback so he can hang in there for a few years and learn the supposed offensive scheme that is, invariably, drive the ball downfield relying on tried and true methods -- mainly penalties and bad calls on third down in your favor -- before chucking it up into the corner of the end zone for your tallest wide receiver. That's the NFL in a nutshell, and that's why every team seemingly has a shot these days. You pencil in New England for Super Bowl champs, and you give every team with a franchise quarterback a fighting chance. And that's all well and good. Boxing is still struggling to find a champion worthy of our attention (Tyson Fury got our attention but for all the wrong reasons, and if you don't know who Fury is ... well, guess he didn't get your attention) and as intriguing as the UFC may be now that Dana White has figured out how to market champions, it may behoove the sport to occasionally showcase fights that last longer than the lifespan of a mayfly. But baseball, bless the boys of summer. They know how to keep sports fans riveted. One only needs to take in the spectacle that is Pete Rose to understand.
Baseball's commissioner, Rob Manfred, is a guy most people never heard of until he uttered a few words about Rose a few weeks ago. Rose, said Manfred, was still banned from the game. Media outlets pounced on the story, saying that his decision meant Rose would be ineligible to appear on the Baseball Hall of Fame's ballot. "Mr. Rose's public and private comments, including his initial admission in 2004, provide me with little confidence that he has a mature understanding of his wrongful conduct, that he has accepted full responsibility for it, or that he understands the damage he has caused," Manfred said.
Manfred went on to say that Rose let slip during an interview with his office that he still bet on baseball. The guy's nickname was "Charlie Hustle." He can't hustle his way into a dugout. But hey, the joke is on baseball. Who talks about Hall of Famers? When was the last time, say, Willie Stargell, Frank Robinson or Sandy Koufax popped up in conversation? Rose can't stay out of the news. That's gotta help the value of his signature, I'm guessing. Either way, whatever baseball thinks it's doing by banning the guy, whatever moral message it thinks it's sending ... maybe it should just help the guy admit he was wrong, get him to agree to stop betting on the game and give each other a big hug. Whatever happened to happy endings? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

EVERY MINUTE COUNTS DURING HEART ATTACK DEAR DR. ROACH: I have read that if you think you are having a heart attack, you should put an aspirin under your tongue to help it dissolve fast and therefore thin your blood. Is this true? Does it somehow adversely affect any medicine the hospital might want to administer? Would it be the same to swallow powder versus a tablet under your tongue? Goody's powder has caffeine in it. Does this make it better or worse in the case of a heart attack? -- G.A. ANSWER: Yes, it is true that aspirin is among the very first treatments given by paramedics for someone with a suspected heart attack. The fastest way of it being effective is to use a 325-mg regular, uncoated aspirin, and to chew and swallow it. Every minute counts during a heart attack, and chewing the tablet speeds up effectiveness by about six minutes. I think you may be confusing aspirin with nitroglycerine, which is absorbed under the tongue and should be administered only by the paramedic or a doctor if you haven't had it before. Aspirin is very important and does not interfere with the other medications used. If you really think you are having a heart attack, call 911 first, then take the aspirin. You still should take it even if you regularly take a baby aspirin. Tell the paramedics
Adding walnuts to your diet may improve blood vessel function and lower cholesterol levels, according to a study published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care. Researchers at Yale University divided 112 participants at risk for diabetes into two groups, one that received dietary counseling to help them compensate for the added walnut calorie intake by keeping their calorie intake constant and another group who received no counseling. Both groups were further divided into subgroups that were instructed to eat 56 grams (roughly 2 ounces) of walnuts per day or avoid walnuts all together. Participants switched subgroups after a three-month period.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: Nine weeks ago, my 76-year-old dad went to Punta Cana in the Dominic Republic for a twoweek vacation. On the second day there, he began having diarrhea, and it has persisted since then. He has lost 15 pounds (and was not overweight to start). He went to a GI doctor, who ordered a single stool culture for ova and parasites, giardia, shiga, campylobacter, salmonella, shigella and C diff (toxin B screen cytotoxin), which all were negative. He will occasionally vomit. He has not had a fever or abdominal pain. Many foods cause violent symptoms, something that never happened before. The GI doctor recommended probiotics, which is being followed. The GI doctor says he is stumped, and has now started him on a lactose-free diet. We need some resolution to this. What are your thoughts? What else can be done to find out what is wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- B.I. ANSWER: Normally, we would repeat the stool cultures, since ova and parasites especially can be missed on one. Most specialists recommend three cultures. I agree with the lactose-free diet and probiotics for now. If it persists, he should probably get an upper and lower endoscopy as well. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Plant Protein Better for Glycemic Control Replacing meat with plant protein improves glycemic control in people with diabetes, according to a meta-analysis published in Nutrients. Researchers reviewed 13 randomized controlled trials, encompassing 280 people, on the effects of plant protein in place of animal protein on HbA1C (a measure of blood sugar control over time), fasting glucose, and insulin levels. Those who replaced approximately 35 percent of animal protein with plant protein per day reduced their HbA1C, fasting glucose, and fasting insulin levels. Researchers point to lower iron stores and lower intakes of sodium and nitrates found in

They nearly crashed as their balloon was weighed down by extraneous supplies such as silk-covered oars. * On Jan. 8, 1867, Congress overrides President Andrew Johnson's veto of a bill granting all adult male citizens of the District of Columbia the right to vote. It was the first law in American history to grant black men the right to vote.
* On Jan. 12, 1904, Henry Ford sets a landspeed record of 91.37 mph on the frozen surface of Michigan's Lake St. Clair. Some 2.5 million gallons of molasses burst from a huge tank when bolts holding the bottom of the tank exploded, shooting out like bullets. * On Jan. 10, 1946, the first General Assembly of the United Nations convenes in London. Two weeks later it adopted its first resolution, which called for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction.

the eyes or nose. Your cat also may have little to no appetite and might be lethargic. Contact the veterinarian right away if your cat has any of these symptoms. The vet will want to examine your cat to confirm what kind of URI it has. Use a cat carrier so other cats in the waiting room won't be exposed, and to keep your cat safe.
CAN A CAT CATCH COLD FROM PEOPLE? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This winter, a lot of my family has had colds and flu. Can my cat catch a cold from us? -- Darlene, via email DEAR DARLENE: Cats don't catch colds directly from humans, but they can suffer from upper respiratory infections that are just as uncomfortable. A number of viral and bacterial infections can make your cat sick. Some of these, such as FVR (feline rhinotracheitis) and FVC (feline calicivirus) can be prevented by making sure your cat gets an annual checkup and vaccinations. An underlying health condition also can make your cat more susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Again, regular checkups and shots can keep it healthy. What symptoms does a cat with a URI have? It may be sniffling and sneezing, along with a clear or cloudy discharge from

Follow the vet's instructions on caring for your sick cat. You may be given a prescription, and you will be asked to keep the cat comfortable and warm, and to try to get it to drink water and eat some food. Dry food may be a turnoff, but it may eat a little wet food. If your cat won't eat or drink, contact the vet again -- an IV may be needed to keep it hydrated.
Young Puppy Just Can't 'Hold It' ---DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We adopted a puppy last month. "Jake" is having some problems adjusting to his new home. He has soiled his own bed three times so far (we crate him at night) and doesn't make it through the day -- he starts whining by the door around lunchtime and, if we're not home, will just go anywhere in the house. How can we fix this? -- Carl B., via email DEAR CARL: How old is Jake? It sounds like, barring any unknown physical issues or illness, that he is a young puppy with a small bladder. He simply can't hold it as long as a fully grown dog. The fact that Jake makes it a point to whine by the door means that the house training is effective, but you may be waiting much too long to take him out. When he has to go, he will go. That includes soiling his crate, which is an absolute last resort for a dog.

Follow this guideline, published by the American Kennel Club, called the "month-plus-one" rule: Take your puppy's age in months, and add one. That gives you a rough estimate of the maximum number of hours Jake should wait before going outside to pee or poop.
Jake may need to go out a little sooner. And yes, that means he may need to go out in the middle of the night, or on a pee pad.
For example, if Jake is four months old, add one to that number. The total, five, means he should be taken outside every five hours. Every puppy is different, so
