• Can you identify the first player ever to pass for 5,000 yards in a single season? It was Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, who spent all of his 17 seasons with that team. • In the sixth week of his rookie season, Marino became a starter, and went on to play in nine Pro-Bowls. Out of his 242 games, he started in 240 of them. The NFL’s list of the Top 100 Greatest Players has Marino in the #10 spot. For many years after his retirement in 2000, he served as an analyst on CBS’s NFL Today. He left the show in 2014 to return to the Dolphins as a special advisor. Over the years, Marino dabbled in the entertainment field, …turn the page for more

• After graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he won the Heisman Trophy, Roger Staubach served a tour of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy. He didn’t play pro football until age 27, when he joined the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie quarterback, the only team he would ever play for. Staubach was a six-time Pro Bowl selection, and made five trips to the Super Bowl, (two times as Super Bowl Champs, and the MVP of Super Bowl VI.)

appearing as himself in television and movies, including Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. After his son was diagnosed with autism, Marino and his wife established a charitable foundation that has distributed more than $22 million toward research and treatment for children with developmental disabilities. • Norwegian-born Jan Stenerud came to America as a college student on a ski-jumping scholarship. In 1964, while training for ski season at Montana State University, he was spotted by one of the school’s coaches who was walking past the football field where Stenerud was cooling down from his practice. The football coach offered Stenerud a tryout, and he was given a position on the team as kicker. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted him in 1966, where he played until 1979, one of the first pro football players to be used as a dedicated kicker. After 19 seasons (including a stint with the Packers and the Vikings), and four Pro Bowl appearances, Stenerud retired with 373 career field goals, and never having missed a game because of injury or illness. He has worked as a sports commentator on Scandinavian television and is also involved with a firm that designs stadiums and sports arenas. • The MVP of the first two Super Bowls was Green Bay Packer Bart Starr. He began his career with the Packers in 1956 and remained a player until 1971. After his retirement, he was immediately hired by the team as their quarterback coach, and became their head coach in 1974, a position he held for nine years. consin, a facility he co-founded in 1965, that helps delinquent and emotionally-disturbed adolescent boys. At the initial fund-raising, Starr donated a Corvette he had won for his Super Bowl performance to be raffled. The 82-old-year-old Starr has recently suffered two strokes and a heart attack, but after intensive physical therapy, his condition has dramatically improved. • Fran Tarkenton played his first NFL game in 1961 at age 21 as a member of the Minnesota Vikings, and went on to nine Pro Bowl selections. In 1977, Tarkenton became the first professional athlete to guest-host “Saturday Night Live.” When this Georgia native retired in 1978, he owned every major quarterback record. Tarkenton has had numerous post-football success stories, starting with founding Tarkenton Software, a computer program generator company. He served as a Monday Night Football commentator for four years and a co-host of ABC’s “That’s Incredible!” during the early 1980s. He has written several self-help motivational books as well as a novel entitled Murder at the Super Bowl, a mystery about a football coach who is killed just before his team is scheduled to play in the big game. • Baltimore Colt legend Johnny Unitas spent 16 years with that team, going to the Pro Bowl 10 times, with three of those as MVP. He was the NFL MVP four times, as well as being voted the league’s best player at the NFL’s 50-year celebration. Unitas set the record for the most consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass, 47 games, a record that stayed in place for 52 years. During his career, Unitas sustained many injuries, including an elbow injury that prevented him from using his right hand. After doing commentary for NFL games during the 1970s, this football hero purchased bowling alleys and a restaurant, as well as investing in an air-freight company and several real estate ventures. Unfortunately, most were fairly unsuccessful. It was his final business decision that put Unitas under, a circuit board manufacturer which failed, forcing Unitas into bankruptcy. A sudden heart attack took his life in 2002 when he was 69.

• There have been no financial difficulties for former Denver Bronco John Elway. In addition to his job as the general manager and executive vice-president of football operations for the Broncos, he has owned two restaurants and nine car dealerships (five of which he sold for $82 million). His net worth is estimated in the $150 million range. Elway almost didn’t have a football career. He was selected by the New York Yankees in the 1981 MLB draft and played 42 games on their Class A team, achieving a .318 batting average. Owner George Steinbrenner’s plan was to make Elway his starting right fielder. Elway was picked up in the 1983 NFL draft and played 16 seasons for Denver.

Amazing Animals
DOGS
•Dogs sweat through their paws. •The breeds that bark the most are beagle and border collie.
• Dogs can hear both higher and lower on the frequency spectrum than humans can. They can also pinpoint sound direction faster, and can hear sounds that are four times as far away as what humans can hear. Dogs with upright ears have better hearing than dogs with droopy ears. Droopy ears were bred into dogs in order to protect their ear canals from grass seeds and bugs when running through brush.
•The chow is the only breed with a black tongue instead of a pink tongue. However, chow puppies are born with pink tongues that turn black after a few months.
•A dog’s acute sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times sharper than a human’s. The part of the brain devoted to processing scent is four times larger in a dog’s brain than in a human’s. People have 5 million scent-detecting cells, but dogs have 220 million. They can detect bladder cancer in a urine sample, and detect a chemical odor change in a person who is about to suffer a seizure.
•Dogs do not have an appendix.
•Why is a dog’s nose wet? It’s covered by a thin layer of mucus that helps them absorb scent. They then lick their noses to sample the scent through their mouth.
•Dalmation puppies are born all white. Their spots arrive later. •Whereas humans have four different blood types, there are eight different blood types among dogs.
•Tallest breed: Irish wolfhound (31 inches / 70 cm at the shoulder). Smallest: Chihuahua (6 inches / 15 cm at the shoulder). Heaviest: St. Bernards, mastiffs (up to 200 lb / 91 kg). Fastest: Greyhound, whippet (45 mph / 72 kmh) •The American Kennel Club recognizes 184 dog breeds in the United States. They are split into seven types: toy / hound / herding / sporting / non-sporting / working / terrier. •The most popular breed in the U.S. and Britain is the Labrador retriever.
•Although dogs have a better sense of smell and hearing than humans, their sense of taste is awful. They only have 1,700 taste buds whereas humans have 9,000. Cats come in last with only 473. This helps explain why dogs so willingly eat garbage: ‘smells interesting, can’t taste it.’
•The smartest breeds are generally thought to be border collies, golden retrievers, Labradors, poodles, Doberman pinschers, and German shepherds.
•The myth that dogs see only in black and white has been disproved. They can see some colors such as blue and yellow but tend to have the same sort of redgreen colorblindness that some humans have. Dogs have better night vision than humans.
•Longest ears: basset hounds.
•Less intelligent breeds include Afghan hounds, chows, and Chihuahuas
•The phrase “man’s best friend” may have originated from a courtroom speech in Missouri in 1870 when a farmer sued a neighbor who shot his dog. •The most common command is ‘sit.’
•When dogs kick after defecating, they are using the scent glands on their paws to further mark their territory.
•It costs about $1,500 per year to maintain a dog.

HOLLYWOOD -- 2015 was a year when films, with top stars, couldn't earn their budgets back at movie box offices. In 2011, Chris Hemsworth burst onto the scene as "Thor" (cost $150 million/gross $450 million). He played Thor again in "The Avengers" (cost $220 million/gross $1.5 billion) and then did "Snow White and the Huntsman" (cost $170 million/gross $396 million). In 2013, "Rush" cost $38 million and grossed $90 million. In 2015 "Thor: The Dark World" cost $170 million and grossed $396 million). "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" cost $280 million and amassed $1.4 billion, followed by a small role in "Vacation" ($31 million cost/$105 million gross). But here's where it went wrong: "Blackhat" cost $70 million and only made $19.6 million, followed by "In the Heart of the Sea" at a cost of $100 million, with only a $76 million take, giving Hemsworth the two biggest losing films of the year. "Pan" couldn't fly despite the magic of Hugh Jackman and the classic Peter Pan children's tale, at a cost of $150 million against a $126 million take. "The Gunman" with Oscar-winners Sean Penn and Javier Bardem, couldn't cover its $40 million cost, grossing $16 million. *** Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock's films usually hit the No. 1 spot in their opening week, but her recent release, "Our Brand Is Crisis," cost $28 million, grossing only $8 million, probably because of one of the most unappealing titles of the year. Johnny Depp's "Mortdecai" grossed $47 million but cost $60 million to shoot. "American Ultra," with Jesse Eisenberg and
Chris Hemsworth
"Rock the Kasbah" with Bill Murray, Kate Hudson and Bruce Willis cost $15 million against just a $3.2 million gross. Even Bradley Cooper couldn't elevate "Aloha" from a $26 million gross to its $37 million budget, despite Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams and Bill Murray in tow.
Brad and Angelina Jolie Pitt produced, wrote and directed "By the Sea," but it sank to $2.5 million from their investment of $10 million. Robert Redford and Cate Blanchet couldn't stir "Truth" (about Dan Rather's firing at CBS) to earn more than $3 million against its $9.6 million cost. Michael Fassbender, as "Steve Jobs," couldn't coax more than $25 million to cover its $30 million outlay. Ryan Reynolds' "Self/less" lost $4 million; James Marsden, Eric Stonestreet and Wentworth Miller couldn't keep "The Loft" from losing $3.9 million; and "Hot Tub Time Machine 2" was short $900,000. Once upon a time major studios bought stories and tailored them to their stars. Maybe some of the executives who made these films will have to boost DVD sales ... door to door, literally! (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
Q: I would like to know the name of the actress who plays opposite Jeremy Renner in "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters." I think she was in "Clash of the Titans" too. Any info you have on her would be great. -- Guy C., Webster, New York A: You are speaking of the gorgeous and talented Gemma Arterton, who, as you said, also played Io in "Clash of the Titans." Gemma is one hot commodity right now, and it would take up too much space to tell you everything she has coming up, but I will sum up as best I can. Gemma -- the Kent, England, native who turns 30 on Feb. 2 -- began her acting career in grammar school, starring in numerous school productions, which eventually led to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her first major film role was as Strawberry Fields in "Quantum of Solace," opposite Daniel Craig's James Bond. Gemma went on to co-star in "Clash of the Titans," "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" and "Hansel and Gretel." She has numerous films in production or on the verge of being released, including "Their Finest Hour and a Half" with Bill Nighy, "The Girl with All the Gifts" with Glenn Close, and "A Hundred Streets" with Idris Elba. *** Q: How much longer till "Bates Motel" returns? It has been renewed for another season, correct? -- Dylan H., via email A: Norma and Norman Bates will indeed be back for another thrilling season of suspense, drama and, of course, a bit of sociopathic killing. The 10-epsisode fourth season of "Bates Motel" returns to A&E on Monday, March 7, at 9/8c, with Freddie Highmore, Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nestor Carbonell and company all returning to continue the story of the Alfred Hitchcock seminal character of a boy with serious mommy issues.
Freddie Highmore
Also, I had mentioned this a few months back, but don't forget that the new thriller, "Damien," will premiere after "Bates." "Damien" follows the titular character from "The Omen" horror-film series, who is now a 30-year-old war photographer and has forgotten all about his satanic past. Damien Thorn, played by Bradley James, must come to terms with the fact that he is the Antichrist. *** Q: My grandmom and I love watching "Rizzoli & Isles" together, but I read that the show is ending. Please tell me it isn't true! -- Lydia R., Sacramento, California A: This summer, Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander will return for the seventh and final season of "Rizzoli & Isles" on TNT. They will star in a shortened 13-episode season. While the show still is a fairly strong performer, TNT head honcho Kevin Reilly said they all "felt like it was time. Everyone said, 'Let's go out and finish 13 great ones and call it a day.'" I'll let you know as soon as I have an exact premiere date for this final season. MORE GRIDIRON GREATS • Merlin Olsen was picked up by the L.A. Rams in 1962 and spent the next 15 years as a defensive tackle. His first contract was about $50,000 for two years, along with a signing bonus. In those years, the average football player’s annual salary was around $12,000. Olsen and three of his teammates on the defensive line, Deacon Jones, Rosey Grier, and Lamar Lundy, became known as “The Fearsome Foursome.” Olsen was selected for the Pro Bowl a record 14 straight years, including his rookie year. During the off-season, Olsen spent his time earning a Master’s Degree in Economics. Post-football, he enjoyed a successful acting career, first on “Little House on the Prairie,” then in his own series, “Father Murphy.” In 2009, Olsen was diagnosed with mesothelioma, possibly due to exposure to asbestos. He passed away the following year.
Please Support Our Advertisers • Olsen’s teammate Rosey Grier made post-career notoriety as a bodyguard for Senator Robert Kennedy during his 1968 presidential campaign. In fact, after assassin Sirhan Sirhan shot Kennedy, it was Grier who took control of the gun and overpowered the killer. Grier had played from 1955 to 1962 for the New York Giants, then for the L.A. Rams through 1966. In 1967, his career came to an end due to a torn Achilles tendon. He went on to host a weekly TV talk show, and made 70 guest appearances on other series during the 1960s and 1970s. Grier had a recording “People Make the World” on the music charts in 1968. This “Gentle Giant” became well known for his hobbies of macramé and needlepoint, authoring the book Needlepoint for Men in 1973. He became an ordained Christian minister in 1983, traveling as an inspirational speaker, and also founded a nonprofit organization that serves inner city youth. • Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka personally handpicked 6’2”, 335 lbs. * Parents of younger children probably will not be surprised by the following factoid: Six eight-stud Lego bricks can be put together in a whopping 915,103,765 different ways -- and at least one of those bricks will end up being stepped on by a barefoot adult.
* It was beloved American astrophysicist and science communicator Carl Sagan who made the following sage observation: "If it can be destroyed by the truth, it deserves to be destroyed by the truth." * You probably are well aware of the fact that caffeine enhances memory and learning in humans -- if you're not a coffee addict yourself, you almost certainly know someone who is. But you probably didn't know that the substance has the same effect on bees. More than half of all flowering plants produce caffeinated nectar, and tests recently conducted by researchers at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom demonstrate that bees strongly prefer nectar with caffeine to the decaf version. * Some ancient Greeks believed that baldness could be cured by applying to the hairless area a mixture of horseradish and pigeon droppings.
* The infamous Ouija board may be surrounded by controversy, but the origin of its name is not mysterious; the creators simply combined the French word for "yes" -- "oui" -- with the German affirmative -- "ja." * There were no domestic cats in North America until they arrived with voyagers from Europe. * You've probably noticed that St. Pauli Girl beer has on its label the image of a buxom blond beauty. You probably aren't aware, however, that the beer was named after the St. Pauli neighborhood of Hamburg, Germany -- a notorious red-light district. So while you may think the lovely image is that of a simple serving girl, it's not out of the question that the lady's occupation may have been somewhat less savory. * Everybody is afraid of something, right? And whatever the fear, there's doubtless a name for it. For example,

The name came about when he and a fellow player tried to fit in the same elevator heading to the college laundry facilities. His teammate said, “Man, you’re about as big as a refrigerator,” and the name stuck. (Perry already weighed 200 lbs. [90.7 kg] at age 11!). In addition to his NFL career (1985-1994), this defensive tackle and member of “The Monsters of the Midway” defense recorded two rap records, appeared on the 1980s series “The A-Team”), and had his own G.I. Joe action figure called “The Fridge.” In 2008, Perry was diagnosed with a serious nerve disorder that sent his life into a tailspin, both physically and financially. In 2011, a 10-year-old boy discovered Perry’s Super Bowl ring for sale in a sports memorabilia shop in a Mickey Mantle’s restaurant. Using $8,500 of his college fund, the boy and his mother purchased the ring and returned it to Perry. Yet in 2015, the ring was on the auction block again. When Perry didn’t pay the taxes on his home, it was seized by the county. At 53, this football great is barely able to walk and lives in an assisted living community.

There's even a word to describe the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth: arachibutyrophobia. And finally, you may at this point be suffering from sesquipedalophobia -- the fear of long words. * Located in the Sierras at 8,000 feet above sea level, the town of Bodie was once the second-biggest city in California. At night, I slather petroleum jelly on the cracks, then follow up with a pair of cotton gloves. I leave these on while I am watching television and puttering around the house. I find them uncomfortable to sleep in, but you could try that instead. I cover the worst cracks with a bandage. RE-THINK WINTER Winter weather may seem like a good excuse to stay inside, avoid workouts and overindulge in comfort foods. However, many health experts have found that these tendencies leave most people feeling less content during the winter months. Researchers say people should establish new traditions to increase happiness and avoid wintertime woes. In other words, now is a great time to change the way you think about winter. Instead of resolving to make drastic new year changes, establish healthy traditions. Incorporate activities and habits that promote health and can be shared with spouses, friends and family members. Here are a few suggestions to re-think your health this winter. * A good first step is creating a vision for the future by picturing yourself happy and healthy. Identify positive and negative aspects of your health and the health of others, including friends, family members, spouses and children. This provides a starting point for establishing new behaviors, avoiding negative habits and seeking help from others. * Set realistic goals with measurable results, because small changes are easier than big changes and can add up over time. Focus on changing one or two behaviors. Once these are mastered, set new goals. * Establish traditions to accommodate cold weather. Try new things, such as dance classes, indoor pools for swimming or water aerobics, or check out exercise videos from the library. Invest in home fitness equipment, such as jump ropes, DVDs, treadmills and stationary bikes. Having equipment at home makes it easier to stay physically active. Search for bargains on gently used equipment, and try different things to find what works best.
* Think of things that are enjoyable, and incorporate physical activity to enhance them. Plan activity breaks, set a timer and have 5-10 minute relays inside or outside, take a walk around the block during commercials or try games that get everyone moving. * Practice ways to improve your mood each day, even if they seem silly or unnecessary. Try wearing bright colors, reading or watching something funny and laughing out loud -- laughing reduces stress hormones and increases endorphins. Socialize and spend time with family, old and new friends and those in need. Creating social ties can boost happiness, improve self-worth and increase your sense of purpose. One of the easiest ways to socialize is over a great meal. Try this crowd-pleasing recipe for Chili With Winter Vegetables. Make it a potluck and invite family and friends over for dinner and game night. Just because it's colder outside doesn't mean you can't have fun inside!
CHILI WITH WINTER VEGETABLES This is a great "make-ahead" recipe that's perfect for impromptu dinner parties. The chili can be refrigerated for up to two days and tastes even better after the flavors meld. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1/2 cup vegetable oil 1 large onion, chopped 4 medium garlic cloves, very finely chopped 2 large red bell peppers, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 pound sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 bunch (about 10 leaves) kale, chopped 1/2 pound carrots, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 2 tablespoons chili powder 2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 (14-ounce) cans peeled Italian tomatoes 2 canned chipotles in adobo, plus 1 1/2 tablespoons adobo sauce 3 cups water or vegetable broth 2 cups canned hominy, drained 2 cups canned red kidney beans, drained Brown rice, chopped red onions, cilantro, tortilla chips or cornbread, for serving
1. In a medium, heavy stockpot or Dutch oven, heat the oil. Add the onion and garlic and cook over high heat, stirring, until slightly softened, about 3 minutes. Add the bell pepper, sweet potatoes, kale and carrots; cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned in spots, about 5 minutes. Stir in the chili powder and cumin and season with salt. Cook for 1 minute.
2. In a blender, puree the tomatoes and their juices with the chipotle, adobo sauce and water or broth until very smooth. Add the mixture to the casserole along with the hominy and beans and bring to a boil. Cover partially and simmer the chili over moderate heat until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Season with additional salt, as needed. Serve with rice, red onions, cilantro and chips. Makes 8 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Her new cookbook is "The Kitchen Diva's Diabetic Cookbook." * Do a puzzle a day. It doesn't matter what kind. Crossword, scrabble, solitaire are all good brain stretchers. Go online to AARP at games.aarp.org for free games. * Get out of the house once a day. Walk to the mailbox, set up a walking routine with a friend (even if you have to go to the local rec center) or pick a different place to visit every day. * Eat something that's good for you at least a few times per week, even if you don't especially care for it. If you don't like green vegetables, for example, scan the Internet for recipes that will make them more palatable. Do you have a smoothie blender? Many ingredients can be combined to taste better together. * Consider upgrading your technology knowledge. If your grandchildren have smartphones, think about whether you might benefit from having that instant contact with them, rather than waiting until you open email to see the latest photos from them. * Look up old friends. If you're not familiar with social media, take a class, and especially learn about the safety aspects.

traumatic brain injury, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and stroke. It also has children's products and cited "improved performance" in school and athletics. The big problem: The company didn't have any research to back up its claims about what the products would do. The FTC alleged unfair or deceptive acts and false advertising, and ordered Lumos to stop making claims unless it has clinical testing of the products to prove what they do. Additionally, Lumos was ordered to disclose its relationship with any person who gives it an endorsement. In one batch of testimonials, consumers were entering a contest to potentially be rewarded with an iPad or a trip to San Francisco for saying nice things about the product. If you are currently a customer or have been a customer in the past, you will be hearing from Lumos. The company was ordered to provide a list of all customers who've purchased monthly or lifetime subscriptions to products between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2014, and to send all those customers an
email or app message notifying them of all of the above and providing a way to instantly end their subscription. The FTC fined Lumos $50 million but it will have to pay only $2 million to the FTC. The consumers who got scammed, however, apparently won't get any of that money in the form of refunds. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

FORECLOSURE DO’S AND DON’TS by Joann Hennessey
WWW.CJAPL.com
When in Foreclosure, consider the following DO’s and DON’Ts in protecting your rights and fighting the banks in this crisis:
DID YOUR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS BECOME UNMANAGEABLE? DOES YOUR DEBT SEEM OVERWHELMING AND COMPLEX?
DO – Hire an attorney based on knowledge, experience, and esprit de corps. “The Fight” is about obtaining the evidence, seeking depositions and other discovery material to refute the Bank’s evidence. Never give up without taking action and negotiating what you can on your terms.
Relax! You have options that may either stop the foreclosure, reduce the amount that you owe or waive portions of your debt.
DON’T – Hire an attorney because the Attorney is cheaper than every other foreclosure defense attorney.
Our Attorneys can guide you through the litigation process and take advantage of these alternative resolutions.
This is your home you are talking about. Most Attorneys who practice in this area are not expensive. They are cheaper than the average rent and certainly cheaper than your mortgage payment.
FREE CONSULTATION 305-639-5195
DON’T – Hire an attorney who saddles you with another mortgage in exchange for attorney fees. In my opinion this is a conflict of interest. If you decide to go this route understand the consequences and the commitment.
At Civil Justice Advocates our primary focus is YOU! t Foreclosure Defense t Debt Settlement t Bankruptcy t Short Sales t Asset Protection t Loan Modifications t Real Estate t Transactions & Contracts t Landlord/Tenant t Civil Litigation t Immigration t Family: Surrogacy, Adoptions & Divorces t FDCPA & TCPA: Defend against abusive collection practices & robocallst Wills, Trusts & Probate
DON’T – Trust anything the Servicer/Lender is telling you when you call after being served a complaint. The Bank will not delay the foreclosure lawsuit while considering you for a loan modification. The Bank’s game is to keep you from defending the foreclosure until the Court orders your house sold. Don’t ignore the law suit. DO – Answer the complaint. At the very least put a letter into the court within 20 days of being served the complaint asking for an extension of time to seek an attorney. This prevents a default from being entered against you without a hearing. DON’T – Think that talking to the Lender is the same as answering the Complaint. It is not. DO – Keep a detailed journal or log of your calls to the Lender/servicer: date, time, name, and substance of the call. Keep all letters, emails, and documents sent to you from the Bank/ Lender. Send all correspondence to the Bank via certified mail or federal express so that you have a record of the bank receiving the correspondence. DON’T – Believe that there are principal reductions out there. There are no significant principal reductions presently being offered by any Banks. However, this is litigation — one never knows what may be found during the course of litigation that could change the Bank’s mind or possibly get the bank to negotiate a principal reduction. By fighting the Banks, options may become available to you that would never have been available if you just walk away. Walking away should be your very last option. DON’T – Believe you will win your house for free. There are no free homes. Yes, there are incidents of people who have had their cases dismissed or who have received a satisfaction of their mortgage for technical legal reasons. These are very rare. Fighting the litigation is the only way you will get positive results either by negotiating a modification that you can live with or walking away with the least amount of damage. In other words, just because you won’t win a mortgage free house does not mean that you will lose your house altogether. There are options. Find out your options by seeking a consultation from a good foreclosure defense attorney. DON’T – Believe that a HAMP modification is a guaranteed permanent loan modification. Truth is the Bank sold your loan to a Wall Street Trust, which often will not allow for a permanent modification — even if you do qualify. Fortunately the Courts have started to catch on to this game of making people pay three months on a modification and then denying them the permanent modification. If you have been paying on a loan modification for over four months, the Bank may have consented to a permanent loan modification by its actions. Seek consultation. DO – Write in the memo area of every check you send to the bank/servicer what the check is for, the loan number, is it for principal and interest or “principal, interest, taxes and insurance.” Do the same with money orders. If you are in a loan modification, send the check or money order by certified mail so you can track the receipt of the check.

DON’T – Think that Bankruptcy will solve your foreclosure litigation. Bankruptcy is a tool to be used at the appropriate time in some cases. Filing Bankruptcy at the beginning of the case can provide an opportunity to get a loan modification in the bankruptcy court without the enormous arrears defeating the Chapter 13 plan. DON’T – Be fooled by thinking the truth, along with your overwhelming and irrefutable evidence will be enough to beat them. You need massive amounts of overkill. Understand that t hi s i s an extremely complex and profitable scam which is why the Bankers will never admit wrongdoing. Good Foreclosure Defense Attorneys along with Homeowners who won’t give up are necessary in exposing and defeating a scheme that seeks to make our children homeless and take away our due process and civil rights.
WHAT IS FORECLOSURE DEFENSE? Foreclosure defense is not just about “where’s the Note?” It is about identifying fraudulent documents, challenging the authority and authenticity of those individuals who sign on the endorsements, assignments of mortgages, and affidavits as well as seeking and identifying documents that contradict the Plaintiff’s claims of ownership. Foreclosure Defense is also about challenging the legitimacy of Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems’ (MERS) assignments of mortgage which often involves a dead mortgage company or the authority employees of a third party company, unrelated to the Lender/Bank, have when signing as an assistant secretary or vice president or attorney-in-fact for the Plaintiff or dead mortgage company without actually being an employee for the Plaintiff Bank/Lender or dead mortgage company. Depositions will be of prime importance in the coming year as will be expert affidavits and securitization audits. Foreclosure Defense Attorneys must challenge old thoughts and passe’ legal theories in this new era of securitization, electronic notes, destroyed notes, allonges not attached to Notes, predatory lending, violations of State recording laws, and fraudulently created documents. Just to mention a few. Borrowers too must challenge a court system that believes that the quicker families vacate their homes the quicker the Florida economy will recover. How homeless families are good for the economy is a mystery but that is the prevailing view. In the depression, the Courts sought methods of keeping families in their home. Today it is the opposite. Now neighborhoods are littered with vacant homes, empty condominiums and devastation. This is complicated law and complicated times. You must fight. You have options and you have rights under the Constitution. You have nothing to lose if you fight. You will get nothing if you don’t fight.
Always keep in mind that your case is also a plea for higher ethical and judicial standards and carries with it a message that the people of the United States will not be intimidated by corrupt banking institutions, manipulative politicians and bankers or a corrupt judiciary that seeks to deprive the people of all property without due process of law until our children wake-up homeless.
WHAT IS THE GOAL? Every individual or family has different goals arising from different situations. Most attorneys will give you a free consultation. In that free consultation the attorney should explain the legal system, explore your options, answer your questions and provide you with a direction.

ALABAMA AT LAST When you don't know anything about history, it's easy to say things like, "we live in a very spectacular time." Phrases like, "never been done before" and "greatest of all-time" get tossed around and played with. While some of this is true -- we, as a species, build off of our experience to progress to another level -- most of the time they're just empty platitudes. Great people slip from this vale of tears all the time, and unless they made one mark to be remembered for, their fame is fleeting. The Alabama Crimson Tide will never have that problem. Sports, better than any other discipline, with the possible exception of the folks behind the Periodic Table of Elements, keeps score. We have lists and lists filled with names with numbers attached; the lists grow longer, but the names never fade. In America, particularly over the past seven years, Alabama, with its four most-recent championships and 16 overall, and its coach, Nick Saban, has made its mark.
(c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
And while many people will say, actually, it's kind of getting boring watching Alabama win every year, you have to ask them if they were watching. Because as soon as the 30-minute pre-game show with every recording artist we're supposed to know singing the same song that nobody can ever sing better than Ray Charles or Whitney Houston did finally end and the actual game started, it was like ... transcendent. It takes schools like Clemson and Alabama to fill a stadium with orange and red, split right down the middle like that. The telecast by ESPN was incredible; I was flipping through all 18 of its channels getting every play and loving every second of it. Two teams battling it out like giants from the first to the last play. Derrick Henry rips off a touchdown run. Deshaun Watson -- the guy who had everyone saying "Vince Young" for a quarter until firmly cementing his own name into the upper echelon of the game -- would stand up like they called offsides and then suddenly snap like a cat hearing a vacuum cleaner, tossing darts all over the field (and covering the point spread ... just saying).

With their thrilling win over Clemson on Jan. 11, the Crimson Tide may have done something even more important: They may have saved football. The sport is reeling. When the Fresh Prince of Philadelphia is starring in movies about concussions, your sport is in trouble. When grown men with arcade-like nicknames dressed up like Bengal tigers push and shove coaches after making illegal hits to the head on national TV, setting up the opposing team for a win, your sport is in trouble. When fans start worrying about what defensive back said on Instagram or Twitter both before and after the game more than the game itself, your sport is in trouble. When you finally get a championship playoff and you move the games to New Year's Eve and nobody watches and the games are lackluster and dull ... again, there's a problem.

evaluation, but I certainly would be concerned about a sudden fast heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart rhythm disturbances in greater detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
CAN HEART SURGERY CAUSE HOT FLASHES? DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had hot flashes, similar to those experienced by post-menopausal women, ever since my coronary bypass in 1990. I can be sitting quietly in a chair reading or at my computer, and suddenly I find myself dripping with perspiration. I also have had panic attacks, with increased heart rate and other physical symptoms. A few years ago, a 24-hour EKG showed heart-rhythm irregularities and that my heart stopped briefly while asleep. If these idiosyncrasies of my autonomic nervous system are a consequence of my time on the heart-lung machine for the bypass, I'm not complaining -- just curious. You said that studies have been done on almost everything. Is this one? -- W.S.B. ANSWER: I found that a lot of people complain of similar symptoms. I also found that indeed, the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system that regulates temperature, sweat, blood pressure and many other critical aspects of body function without our being consciously aware of it) can be adversely affected by cardiac surgery. Some authors have suggested that the autonomic nervous system changes are one mechanism by which people are more likely to have depression after cardiac surgery. I found several possible explanations why the ANS changes with bypass surgery, but no clear consensus. I would want to be sure that there are no other causes of these symptoms. It sounds like you have had an extensive
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered a long time with GERD. I was diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus, a precancerous disease. My doctor recommended a procedure called a Nissen fundoplication. Since the procedure, I have not had heartburn again. I would do it again, after what I went through. I get an endoscopy every two years to keep an eye on my disease. -- G.D.B. ANSWER: Barrett's esophagus is a complication of longstanding reflux. It is diagnosed when the lining of the esophagus starts to look like the lining of the stomach. Barrett's esophagus can progress to cancer of the esophagus. About 0.2 percent of those with Barrett's per year will develop cancer, which sounds low, but if you live with the condition for 25 years, that's about a 5 percent risk. Surgery for reflux disease is done only rarely. However, it is very effective (85 percent to 90 percent). The most common reason to consider surgery is inadequate relief from medications and lifestyle changes. However, severe erosions from acid in the esophagus, inability to take medications, a stricture (partial closure) of the esophagus and Barrett's esophagus are all reasons to consider surgery. Surgery appears to reduce the risk of cancer more than other treatments. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 77, female and in great health except for being diagnosed with achalasia. I know it is rare, and I was happy to find out why my digestive system had discomfort. Do yoga twists or shoulder stands worsen this? It seems worse when I do these. -- E.H. ANSWER: Achalasia is a disease of abnormal movement in the esophagus, the muscular tube that carries food from the back of your throat to the stomach. It is caused by damage to the nerves in the esophagus, possibly from destruction by the body's immune system. Because of the nerve damage, the food gets stuck in the esophagus, leading to difficulty swallowing and vomiting of
Weight Control More Important than Exercise
Low-Fat Diet Alters Taste Buds A low-fat diet increases sensitivity in taste buds to fatty foods in those with obesity, according to a study published in Obesity. Participants followed either a low-fat diet or a portion-controlled diet for six weeks and reported sensitivity to fat taste. While both groups lost weight, those who followed the low-fat diet decreased their fat thresholds and their perceptions of fatty foods more so than those who consumed the portion controlled diet. These findings support the use of low-fat diets to increase satiety in obesity treatment.
A new study suggests that weight control is more important than exercise for health. Researchers at Sweden’s Umea University evaluated the weight and aerobic fitness levels of 1.3 million 18-year-old Swedish men, then followed them for an average of 29 years. Although aerobic fitness reduced the overall death rate, the benefits of exercise were reduced in obese individuals, and normal-weight individuals who were not aerobically fit had a 30 percent reduced risk of mortality, compared with obese individuals who were aerobically fit. The results suggest that both weight control and exercise are beneficial, but that weight control may be more critical for long-term health. *Hogstrom G, Nordstrom A, Nordstrom P. undigested food. Both solids and liquids are affected, as opposed to esophageal cancer, in which the problem is mostly solids. Gravity helps us swallow, so being upside down will make gravity work against you, and I would expect the condition to worsen with yoga positions that turn the esophagus upside down. I wouldn't recommend those types of positions, especially since they may cause or worsen vomiting. Treatment of achalasia should be done by an expert in the condition, and may include dilation of the esophagus, injection with Botox into the muscle or surgery. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Egg Consumption Increases Risk for Type 2 Diabetes Consuming three or more eggs per week increases an American's risk for type 2 diabetes, according to a meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers analyzed 12 cohort studies that encompassed over 200,000 participants and their egg consumption and risk for type 2 diabetes. In the United States, those who consumed the most eggs experienced a 39 percent higher risk for diabetes, compared with those who consumed the least. In studies conducted outside the United States, egg consumption was not associated with diabetes risk. Other dietary habits may contribute to the elevated risk, including common consumption of processed meats with eggs. *Djoussé L, Khawaja OA, Gaziano JM. If you really want to share table scraps with pets, be very selective about what you share and how much. Fresh (not cured) meat, poultry or fish are good. Trim away all fat, and make sure no gravy or seasonings are on the food. Serve pets only a small handful, and if they exhibit any health issues -excessive vomiting, lethargy or other symptoms -- contact a vet right away.
A Scrappy Situation DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Can you feed leftover meal scraps to cats? My boyfriend says no; I say yes, because I've been feeding scraps to my three cats for years. What do you say? -- Carole in Davenport, Iowa DEAR CAROLE: Feeding scraps to pets -dogs or cats -- is not recommended. The main reason is that food prepared for humans often contains ingredients that are harmful to pets, such as onions, garlic, raisins, avocado and many more. Scraps also can contain more fat than pets are used to, creating digestive problems and setting them up for obesity. And leftovers can be high in salt, which can be as detrimental to pets as it is to us. However -- and this is a big "however" -- table scraps tend to get fed to begging cats anyway by kind-hearted owners or their guests. Or, cats just steal them off counters when no one is looking. Is there a balance between the "absolutely no scraps" guideline and the "live and let live" tendency of some owners?
A healthier option is to prepare a small amount of protein and vegetables separately for your pets as you cook dinner. Leave out seasonings and consider steaming or roasting the food rather than cooking in oil. Cool completely before serving to pets.
Toy Poodle Barks Almost Nonstop DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My 6-month-old toy poodle, "Jenks," is incredibly cute, but he has a sharp, loud bark for such a little guy -- and he barks almost nonstop when we're home. I know anxiety is an issue with many small breeds, and I'm wondering how I can best address this? -- John, via email DEAR JOHN: It's worth looking into. Contact Jenks' veterinarian to discuss the issue, as I'm sure you'll get a number of different suggestions ranging from behavior training to anti-anxiety medication. Jenks is still pretty young. How much time does he spend alone at home? If you have to be out for eight hours or more, you may want to have someone -- a friend or a pet sitter -- come in to check on him, take him out to pee and play a little bit.

You also should establish a routine that he can count on, one that includes plenty of time spent with him either playing or training. Both of these are times when he's getting your full attention and positive reinforcement, as well as a way to work off some of that puppy energy that's also behind the barking.
