• Singer/songwriter Ross Bagdasarian came up with an innovative idea in 1958 while experimenting with the speeds on a record player. He used his own voice recorded at half speed and played back at normal speed to create the Chipmunks – Simon, Theodore, and Alvin. Bagdasarian took on the stage name of David Seville, named for the city in Spain where he had been stationed during World War II. His blockbuster hit “The Chipmunk Song” (“Christmas, Don’t Be Late”) sold 4.5 million records in seven weeks, and paved the way for the CBS program, “The Alvin Show,” which premiered in 1961. The success of the Chipmunks continues to this day, carried on by Bagdasarian’s son, Ross, Jr.

• Illustrator Vernon Grant created the cartoon mascots for Kellogg’s Rice Krispies, Snap! Crackle! and Pop! In the 1930s, Snap! was the first one created, and appeared on the box alone for six years. In English, we say, “Snap! Crackle! Pop!” but in German, the Rice Krispies mascots say, “Knisper! Knasper! Knusper!, while those in Finland say, “Riks! Raks! Poks!” The little fellows say, “Pif! Paf! • In 1968, rockabilly songwriter Dick Holler composed a tribute song to the memory of four assassinated American civil rights leaders. Entitled “Abraham, Martin, and John,” the song memorialized Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert Kennedy, written shortly after King and Bobby Kennedy were killed. “Anybody here, seen my old friend Abraham…” is the first verse, followed by King and JFK. The fourth verse mentions Bobby walking over a hill with the other three. Recorded by Dion, the song rose to #4 on the Billboard pop chart. …turn the page for more

FAMOUS TRIOS (continued):

• You’ve no doubt heard of the Three Musketeers, but do you know their individual names? Alexandre Dumas’ 1844 novel tells of the adventures of three inseparable childhood friends, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Their well-known motto is “All for one and one for all!” First published in serial form in a Paris magazine from March to July, 1844, it takes place in the 1600s, and tells of the daring “swashbuckling” deeds of these members of The King’s Musketeers. Incidentally, the Mars candy bar of the same name made its debut in 1932. Mars’ advertising of the 1990s featured three men dressed as the legendary trio. • Do the names of Gaspar, Melchior, and Balthazar ring a bell? Although their names are not specifically mentioned in the Bible, these are the names attributed to the three Wise Men of the East, or Magi, who came to present gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to Jesus after his birth in Bethlehem. There is also no mention of the number of kings who made the trek from Persia, but because three gifts are referenced, tradition gave way to the assumption that there were three men. After presenting their gifts, the Magi were warned by an angel in a dream to return to their homeland. • Who you gonna call? Ghostbusters, of course! This 1984 blockbuster film starred Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Bill Murray as New York City parapsychologists who establish a ghost-catching business. Recently fired from their positions at Columbia University, the three develop sophisticated equipment that can capture spirits, operating their business from an abandoned firehouse. Aykroyd had written a role for his pal John Belushi, but upon Belushi’s death, Bill Murray was hired. The giant

monster, The Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man, was one of the film’s beasts. Three suits were made for the character, each costing $20,000. All were destroyed during the filming. Fifty gallons of shaving cream were used to simulate the marshmallow “goo.” The movie was #1 at the box office for five weeks, and went on to gross more than $295 million worldwide. • Premiering in 1976, “Charlie’s Angels” starred Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson. The crime action series chronicled the adventures of three police academy graduates who craved more excitement than working as a meter maid or crossing guard. Hired by Charlie Townsend as private investigators, the three worked alongside Townsend’s associate Bosley. Bosley acted as the primary go-between since the trio of ladies never laid eyes on their employer, and received their assignment over speakerphone. Actor John Forsythe was the voice behind the mysterious Charlie, who was occasionally seen from the back. Over the show’s five seasons, other Angels made their way into the cast – Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts. • In 1925, Ted Healy debuted a vaudeville act called “Ted Healy and His Southern Gentlemen,” featuring the three Horwitz brothers, Curly, Moe, and Shemp. Their slapstick, nonsensical comedy routine was a big hit, and they were contracted to make a film in 1932, Soup to Nuts. Shemp left the group shortly after, and a childhood friend of the boys, Larry Fine (Louis Feinberg), took his place. The trio separated from Healy and became known as The Three Stooges. Their popularity soared and MGM signed the trio to a movie contract in 1933. In 1946, Curly suffered a severe stroke and his brother Shemp returned to the group. Despite illness and old age, the beloved Stooges managed to keep their act together going into the 1980s, after having starred in more than 220 films. • The Bible’s Book of Daniel relates the story of three young Jewish men who defied their king to worship God. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego lived in Bab-

ylon and were officials of King Nebuchadnezzar. The King set up a 90-ft. (27.4 m) statue of gold and commanded all to bow down before it. Refusal would result in being thrown into a fiery furnace. The trio’s response was, “If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if He does not, we want you to know that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold.” The furnace was prepared, seven times hotter than normal. When Nebuchadnezzar looked in, he saw four figures, walking unharmed in the flames. Realizing that an angel had been sent to protect them, he released them, and they emerged without a single sign of a burn. The King then decreed that any who spoke against their God should be torn limb from limb.

MESSAGES IN BOTTLES • Miami's sewage treatment facilities consisted of a plant that piped the raw sewage into the ocean about 2 miles from shore. Officials felt that winds and tides would disperse the mess harmlessly. Environmental activists thought differently and set out to prove it. On October 22, 1970 they took a boat to the end of the pipe, and released 700 watertight bottles. Inside each bottle was a note and a mail-in card. The note said, "This card was placed in a drift bottle released directly over the end of the Miami Beach sewer outfall which dumps raw, untreated sewage into the ocean. This drift bottle was found by (name, address). It was found (location). This drift bottle was moved by the same wind and currents that move the raw sewage. This is where Miami's sewage goes." 12 days later, 70 of the cards had been received from points along the coast of Florida.

•In 1875, the crew of the Canadian ship Lennie staged a mutiny, murdering all officers on board except for a steward who was needed to navigate the ship to Spain. He headed the ship to France, telling them it was Spain, while periodically dropping bottles overboard that told the whole story. The French authorities were waiting when they arrived in France.

•Around 300 B.C. Greek philosopher Theophrastus used floating bottles to prove that the Mediterranean receives most of its water from the Atlantic.

•A British sailor in the 1800s tossed a marriage proposal overboard into waters off of Britain as his ship got underway for India. On the return journey he was walking along the beach in Egypt when he found and retrieved his own bottled proposal of marriage.

•An ocean survey ship called the Pioneer dropped 22,000 bottles into the ocean in 1964, each containing information on where and when it was tossed overboard. Forms enclosed explained the purpose of the bottle and asked the finder— in English, French, Spanish, and Japanese— to return the form and information about where it was found to the project’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. The survey reported an average return rate of 8% and most were found between nine months and two years after they were released.

• Albert, Prince of Monaco, asked ship captains to drop bottles into the sea at certain spots to research currents. Over 1,700 bottles were dropped between 1885 and 1888, and 227 of them were returned in the next 10 years.

•Daisy Alexander inherited the Singer sewing machine fortune. She couldn't decide what to do with her money when she died, so she wrote out her will, sealed it in a bottle, and tossed it in the River Thames in London. The will gave 50% of her fortune to whoever found the bottle. She died 2 years later. Ten years after her death, an unemployed restaurant worker named Jack Wurm found the bottle on the beach at San Francisco. He received over $6 million. Daisy's lawyer got the other half of the fortune.

•Swedish sailor Åke Viking dropped a bottle overboard in 1958, asking any pretty girl who found it to write to him. Two years later, a Sicilian fisherman found it and gave it to his daughter, Paolina, as a joke. She wrote to Åke. They were married in Sicily. •The longest it has ever taken a message in a bottle to be discovered is 108 years. In 1906, the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom dropped more than 1,000 bottles into the North Sea with instructions to return any bottles found to the institute with information about where they had been picked up. In 2015 a tourist found one of the bottles and dutifully returned it to the address listed.

HOLLYWOOD -- What is the "Bourne" franchise without Matt Damon as Jason Bourne? "The Bourne Identity" cost $60 million and grossed $214 million. "The Bourne Supremacy" cost $75 million and grossed $288 million. "The Bourne Ultimatum" cost $100 million and grossed $444 million. The fourth film in the franchise was "The Bourne Legacy," made without Matt Damon and starring Jeremy Renner, who was not in the first three with Matt. It cost $125 million and grossed $276 million, quite a drop from the previous film. Desperate times require drastic measures. The fifth "Bourne" film (as yet untitled) will not only have Damon back but will have him as a producer and a writer with Paul Greengrass. Julia Stiles and Tommy Lee Jones also are on board. They've already shot scenes outside Paddington Station in London and Washington, D.C., and are currently shooting in Las Vegas, causing the Vegas Strip to be closed down for up to 10 days. *** We always knew Rocky Balboa would go on forever! Sylvester Stallone's new "Rocky" film, "Creed," cost $35 million to make and so far has taken in upward of $130 million. Still a far cry from the original "Rocky" which cost $1.1 million back in 1976 and grossed $226 million. "There's no doubt that we're making a 'Creed 2,'" says MGM CEO Gary Barber. Stallone admits he's already getting ready to step back into the ring for another sequel where he'll play Rocky Balboa, and maybe even see Carl Weathers return as Apollo Creed. Stallone, now 69, has said he will not do "Rambo 5," admitting, "The heart is willing but the body says stay home. It's like fighters who go back for one more round and get clobbered. If I can't do better than the last time -- and I can't -- then why?"

Since that won't come to theaters for a while, you can catch Josie on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime when she stars in the suspense-drama "Pregnant at 17." While it was intended as a close-ended, limited event series, there was always the hope that it would be back for another go 'round, but it wasn't meant to be. MUSICAL THREES • Perhaps the most famous opera singers in history, The Three Tenors consisted of Spaniards Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras, and Italian Luciano Pavarotti. Even people who didn’t like opera music liked this group, who made their debut as a trio in July, 1990. The concert, held as a benefit for leukemia, (Carreras had been diagnosed with the disease three years earlier), was recorded and became the best-selling classical album of all time. Their second televised performance held at Dodger Stadium (for which each tenor received $1 million) attracted 1.3 billion viewers worldwide. On their first worldwide tour, each received about $1 million per concert, which included a percentage of merchandise sold. Before disbanding as a trio in 2003, they had performed 34 live concerts. • Founded in 1961, Peter Yarrow, Paul Stookey, and Mary Travers were the most popular folk group of the 1960s. Their debut album, which included “If I

Please Support Our Advertisers Had a Hammers,” “Lemon Tree,” and “500 Miles” was an immediate hit. Peter, Paul, and Mary re-released a Bob Dylan tune in 1963, “Blowin’ in the Wind,” and sold 300,000 copies in less than two weeks. Yarrow composed “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” a tune the group recorded in 1963. The song has been shrouded in myths that it’s filled with drug references, but Yarrow actually based it on a poem about the lost innocence of childhood. The trio’s only #1 hit single, “Leavin’ on a Jet Plane,” came in 1969, a song written by their friend John Denver, who had initially recorded it in 1969 • Some of the most recognizable music in history was sung by the Brothers Gibb, or the BeeGee’s, as they called themselves. Their tight harmonies, vibrato, and falsetto sounds were their signature during the disco era. Older brother Barry and twins Robin and Maurice began their career in 1958, signing their first record contract in 1963. The family had moved from their native England to Australia, where the brothers were voted the Best Group of 1966, with Barry winning as Beat Songwriter at just 17 years of age. Their 1977 Saturday Night Fever soundtrack sold 15 million copies

Judy Carne entered wearing what has been described as a “tunic-topped pants suit.” When she was told she wouldn’t be allowed to dine, she took off her pants and left them in the coat-check room. The tunic by itself just barely qualified as a micro-mini, but it was enough. The eatery’s policy prohibiting women from wearing pants to dine didn’t change until 1969. That was the year when “Laugh-In” actress

Of course, when we say green bean we are talking about the pod, not the bean itself. And in this class of legumes there are many varieties, from the standard Kentucky Wonder pole bean and the Italian flat bean, to the haricot verts and wax beans (which are not green at all). Each type has its own slightly unique flavor and characteristics. While the United States grows more green beans than any other country, they also are prevalent in dishes from many cuisines from around the world.

If asked, "What's your favorite veggie?" you might name that inaugural vegetable, likely one of the first you ever tasted, as the winner. You know, the one you had on your plate at least twice a week growing up: green beans! You might have had them served camo green from a can, or neon bright from a bag ... hanging out with a mix of frozen peas and carrots. Maybe, if you were lucky, it was a pile of fork-tender pods just picked from the garden. Whatever their incarnation, green beans hold a place in both our culinary history and our personal memories. It wasn't kale that Mom bought pureed in a small, fat jar and fed you as your first bites of "real food." It was green beans! The thing about green beans is that in this age of kohlrabi, chard, sunchokes and celeriac, they seem so ordinary, maybe even a little plain. But that's exactly what we like about green beans, especially these days. I think we'd all admit it's nice to have an uncomplicated, straightforward vegetable around. Green beans are a simple side that we can count on when we see it on our plate. With green beans, there are no questions, no summoning up our courage, because they taste like home. Mother knew what she was doing when she served up green beans, snap beans or string beans time after time. Green beans are high in dietary fiber and a tasty source of vitamins A and C. Just make sure not to overcook them. For crisp, tender beans, lightly steam for a just few minutes to retain their nutrients. In the garden, green beans also are highly desired and very beneficial. As a member of the legume family, green beans produce their own nitrogen and are sometimes grown by gardeners and farmers to improve soil quality. Early Native Americans grew a garden called "Three Sisters," composed of corn, beans and squash. The corn provided the structure on which the beans could climb,

STRONG LEGS BOOST BRAINPOWER A 10-year British study out of Kings College found an interesting correlation between leg strength and brainpower. In the first-of-its-kind study, strong legs equated to cognitive strength down the road. Female twins between the ages of 43 and 73 (average age 55) were recruited for baseline testing, with adjustments made for various parameters such as socioeconomic status, alcohol drinking, blood pressure, level of exercise and more. Memory and learning were measured at the start of the study, as were the strength of leg muscles of both twins. Brain scans also were taken. Ten years later the tests were repeated. Those who'd started and ended with more muscular legs showed the best results in memory and cognitive tests and more brain volume. The researchers still don't know for certain why they saw these results. More studies need to be done, they said, to understand how aerobics, brain function and leg muscle power all come together, and whether muscle-building chemicals somehow make their way to the brain. While scientists didn't predict the outcome, it was not surprising because they've long known that general exercise can help with cognitive function. Until they figure out the specifics, one thing is clear: adding more walking or doing exercises designed to increase leg strength can help with memory and thinking. We can run, take dance classes, lengthen our daily walk and spend time on a treadmill or rowing machine at the gym. Even yoga can help strengthen leg muscles. For those who aren't mobile, seated rowing exercises with a resistance band can help, as can a recumbent bicycle. Consider asking your doctor for an exercise plan that concentrates on the leg muscles.

754-210-7154 FEED YOUR HEAD Brain games and puzzles can keep our brain cells firing, but now, for the first time, researchers have discovered that if we go back to college, we'll increase our cognitive capacity -- the amount of information the brain is capable of retaining at any one moment. The Tasmanian Healthy Brain Project recruited seniors who agreed to take cognitive tests before they enrolled in college, and then assessed them each year for three years. The results were strongly positive: More than 90 percent of those who studied for a year, either full or part time, had a "significant increase in cognitive capacity." Researchers plan to follow those students to see if continuing to study could delay or reduce dementia. It didn't seem to matter what classes the participants took, or whether they were in person or online. Age, well-being, social connections and gender didn't change the results.

2500 E. Hallandale Beach Blvd. Suite T, Hallandale Beach FL 33009 If we're lucky enough to have a college nearby and the ability to pay for a class, it's a matter of calling for a course catalog and an application. If you prefer free or reduced-cost education, go online to find a FAFSA application (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). You'll learn which grant programs give money to seniors. Another place to start is online at www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. The site is a guide to colleges that offer reduced or free tuition for seniors. Even if a listing says information about tuition waivers from a certain college couldn't be found, the contact information is there. So where does that leave us if we don't have access to a nearby college? Call the local library and ask about "lunch and learn" meetings. Or, for a real thrill, search for "open courseware" on the Internet, and you'll find thousands of free online classes from top universities. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

So he went to work, providing us what is today simply known as "The Drive":

THE LONG DRIVE Picture, if you will, a jam-packed Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The Browns, the league's perennial heartbreakers, have taken a 20-13 lead in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos. There are less than six minutes left in the game, and the crowd is in a frenzy. The Broncos would muff the kickoff return and start their possession on their own 2-yard line. For most quarterbacks, this would seem like a daunting task. Not Broncos quarterback John Elway. The record-setting Stanford grad, standing 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 215, was basically engineered for just this sort of thing. Smart, cool under pressure, howitzer of an arm, had legs that could plow a field. He could punt, too. Put simply, he wasn't like the other guys in the league.

After the mishandled kick, the Broncos face first down and 10 at their 2-yard line. Elway from the end zone, dumps to running back Sammy Winder for 5 yards. Second down and 5, Denver 7-yard line. Winder 3-yard run. Third down and 2, Denver 10-yard line. Winder 2-yard run, first down. Denver 12-yard line, Winder 3-yard run. Second down and 7, Denver 15-yard line. Elway breaks for a 11-yard run, first down. Denver 26-yard line. Elway has time, smashes tightend Steve Sewell for a 22-yard pass over the middle. First down, Denver 48-yard line. Elway fires to Steve Watson for 12 yards to bring us to the 2-minute warning. Cleveland fights back, Dave Puzzuoli sacks Elway for a loss of 8 after his incomplete pass intended for Vance Johnson. It's third down and 18 at the Cleveland 48-yard line with 1:47 left in regulation. Elway drops back before rifling a pass to Mark Jackson for 20 yards. The Broncos have not failed to convert a third down. Denver at the Cleveland 28 with 1:19 left. A 14-yard rocket to Sewell, then a 9-yard scramble by Elway. It's third and 1, and Denver is at the door on the Cleveland 5-yard line with 39 seconds left in the game. Cleveland fans are screaming. Elway drops back, stops and drills Jackson in the end zone for a touchdown, and the Rich Karlis extra point sends them into overtime. He later kicks the field goal that will send them to the Super Bowl.

The Broncos were trounced by the Giants and the Redskins in successive years, the 49ers would crush the Orange in 1990. The secret to beating them was simple: stop Elway. Between Dan Reeves' predictable, conservative play-calling and a thin supporting cast, Elway was almost a man alone. In the late '90s, this time armed with Terrell Davis and a stiff defense, Elway would win two Super Bowls in a row, including one over the Reeves-coached Atlanta Falcons. Now 55, Elway is the general manager of the Broncos, a team recently crushed in the Super Bowl by the Seahawks. Their quarterback is an aging legend, Peyton Manning. Elway is credited with rebuilding the team around him, setting the stage for a comeback against the Cam Newton-led Carolina Panthers. Newton, at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, is the modern-day Elway. The Broncos game plan will be simple: stop Newton. Just as the Giants, Redskins and 49ers did to Elway in years past. The Broncos again stand at the precipice. This time they are reloaded. Can Newton be stopped? Can Manning retire on top, or will it be another long drive home? Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

ANSWER: Probiotics are microorganisms, usually bacteria or yeast, that have beneficial properties. There is at least some evidence to support the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's and ulcerative colitis), colon inflammation from radiation, irritable bowel syndrome and other diseases of the GI tract. However, with a few exceptions, there is very little evidence that taking anything (prescription or supplement) is of benefit to people who are healthy with no symp-

ANSWER: Not usually. In some people with very longstanding high blood pressure, the heart can become dilated -- blown up like a balloon to much more than its normal size. When the heart, particularly the atria (the top chambers), becomes dilated like that, it makes atrial fibrillation more likely. High blood pressure is very common. Irregular heartbeats are universal -- we all have some every day. It is human nature to associate one problem with another, since they are both related to the heart. However, it's more likely that the everyday irregularities you may have had without noticing take on new significance with a diagnosis of high blood pressure. That being said, since it is possible they are related, it's certainly worth an EKG next time you see your internist or cardiologist to make sure you don't have a dangerous heart rhythm. Sometimes doctors order 24-hour (or longer) EKGs for use at home, which can be correlated with any symptoms of heart irregularities. The booklet on abnormal heart rhythms explains atrial fibrillation and the more common heart-rhythm disturbances in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 107W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6. Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have lower-back ache and have been seeing a chiropractor, which helps a little. Would yoga help? -- A.

High-Fiber Diet Good for Lungs

Green Leafy Vegetables Reduce Glaucoma Risk Dietary nitrates found in green leafy vegetables reduce your risk for glaucoma, according to a study published online in JAMA Ophthalmology. Researchers followed participants from the Nurse’s Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Those with the highest intake of plant-derived dietary nitrates had a 21 percent lower risk of all primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and a 44 percent lower risk for POAG associated with impaired blood flow when compared to those with the lowest intake. Participants consumed a variety of nitrate-rich vegetables including kale, mustard greens, chard, and spinach, and consumed more antioxidants, folate, and vitamins from other vegetables than those who consumed lower amounts of nitrates. This study supports dietary interventions as effective prevention for blood flow dysregulation that may lead to glaucoma.

A high-fiber diet protects lung function, according to a study published online in the Annals of the American Thoracic Society. Researchers monitored dietary fiber intake and lung function in 1,921 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Those who consumed more than 17 grams of fiber per day from fruits, vegetables, and legumes had better lung health, compared with those who consumed the least. This study supports previous research that showed fiber’s association with a reduction of inflammation, a cause of lung disease.

Baldness Linked to Colorectal Cancer Male balding patterns are linked to colorectal cancer, according to a study published in the British Journal of Cancer. Researchers assessed hair patterns and cancer incidence rates in 32,782 middle-aged men as part of the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. Those who experienced frontal-only baldness and frontal-plus-mild-vertex baldness had a 30 percent higher risk for colorectal cancer than those with no baldness, frontal-plus-moderate-vertex baldness, or

ANSWER: Yoga does help many people with back pain, but it's important to find an instructor with experience with beginners and in using yoga specifically for back pain. Similarly, tai chi and Pilates exercises have been shown to be useful treatments for back pain. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. frontal-plus-severe-vertex baldness. A separate analysis linked frontal-only baldness with increased risk for colorectal tumors. While previous studies linked male pattern baldness to prostate cancer, this is the first to explore similar links with colorectal cancer. Researchers suspect insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1), which is elevated by consumption of dairy products, and excess insulin activity to be possible mechanisms.

Fatty Liver Linked to Heart Disease Fatty liver disease is linked to heart failure, according to an article published online in Radiology. Researchers assessed data on liver, heart function, and BMI from 714 participants from the Netherlands Epidemiology of Obesity study. An increase in fat in the liver resulted in decreased coronary blood flow in obese participants despite any pre-existing symptoms of metabolic syndrome. These findings suggest that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease may pose a greater risk for heart failure above and beyond the risk factors already associated with metabolic syndrome and stresses the importance of dietary interventions as a means for prevention. happens while they're settling in. -- Curtis, via email DEAR CURTIS: You told them, and I thank you! This is an era when many people no longer have a phonebook waiting for them on the day they move in (something that was almost standard 20 or so years ago). Instead, we rely on Internet and cellphone connections to get critical information.

EMERGENCY CALL LIST SHOULD INCLUDE PETS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I wanted to pass along a suggestion to your readers. Last summer, we moved to a new city. The day after we moved in, our cat "Lace" became critically ill in the middle of the night. With no Internet connection set up, my wife used her slow, older smartphone to look up a 24-hour emergency clinic. We found one that was a 30-minute drive away. Lace got there in time and has recovered pretty well, but it haunts me that it took us nearly 20 minutes to look up the location of that clinic. Please tell your readers that they should write down the number and address of their pet's regular veterinarian and the nearest emergency vet clinic on their list of important numbers, and keep it next to their home phone or saved on their cellphone. If they are moving to a new area, they should look up the clinics nearest their new home and have that information ready just in case something

The plus side of having an Internet connection is being able to look up important locations -- such as the vet, the emergency clinic, the doctor and dentist ... and the nearest pizza place -- before leaving your old city. Having a contact list, both on paper and stored on your computer or cellphone, also is important in an emergency such as a house fire or a natural disaster.

Finicky Cats Stage Hunger Strikes DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm writing in regards to your recent column about the causes of finicky eating in pets. My two cats don't like liver or the smell of liver. However, most wet cat food contains chicken or beef "byproducts," which usually means some amount of liver. If my cats smell liver in their food, they just won't eat it, and will go hungry and meow about it -- usually in the middle of the night. By trial and error, I have found about five or six different cans they really like to eat. However, some days they gobble the food down and other days they go on a hunger strike, even with foods they liked the last time. When that happens, I pick up the bowl and smell it. Every sin-

I wish cat food manufacturers would not add any liver at all, but almost all cat food has byproducts in it. I hope my experience helps your other readers. -- Kathy in Sacramento

Often that boils down to buying a much more expensive brand that doesn't contain byproducts. But that can be difficult for many cat owners. Readers, what tips do you have for cat owners trying to deal with finicky eaters? Send your tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

DEAR KATHY: Many thanks for sharing

Your Rudy Vallee recording is worth about $5 in good playable condition. Incidentally, the main drawback of these products is that they had a tendency to curl.

A: According to most of the guides I consulted, they are worth a minimum of $100 each in good shape. As with most collectibles, condition is paramount. The value of a comic boils down to several factors, including condition, scarcity and demand. A good place to monitor the value of comics is eBay.

*** Q: I have a political poster of Richard Nixon that was used in 1948 to promote his congressional campaign in California. It is in fairly good condition, and I have been offered $200 for it. Keep or sell is my question. -- Carol, Orange County, California

this! I too have dealt with this issue. The struggle then becomes finding another flavor or brand of food that the cat will tolerate.

*** Q: I have three issues of "Marge's Little Lulu" comics, Nos. 39, 81 and 123. Are they worth keeping? -- Betty, Springfield, Ill.

A: Your record was issued by Hit of the Week and was sold at news stands beside the latest copies of Liberty, Saturday Evening Post and Punch. The recordings, which featured such popular entertainers as Eddie Cantor and Duke Ellington, sold for about 10 cents, making them extremely affordable.

gle time it smells like liver, and I have to throw it out.

A: Your television was introduced in 1949 and was, as you claim, quite unusual. I would, in fact, consider it a classic. It had a 16-inch tilt-out screen that could be hidden when not in use. I have checked with two serious collectors, and they seem to agree that your set is worth somewhere in the $400 to $600 range depending, of course, on its condition.

the composer sketched one of the work's principal themes while visiting Florence, Italy. Also on the program will be Johannes Brahms String Sextet #2 in G major, Op. 36. Brahms (1833-1897) did most of the composition (1864-65) in comfortable country surroundings near Baden-Baden, Germany. According to a Brahms biographer, it conceals a reference to the first name of Agathe von Siebold (with whom he was infatuated at the time) in the first movement. The work is characterized by its exotic sounding opening of the first movement, by innovative chord structures and its many contrasts both technical and melodic. Both string sextets are scored for 2 violins, 2 violas, and 2 cellos.
