• The Olsen twins, Mary-Kate and Ashley, were born to a mother who was a personal manager and a real estate developer/mortgage broker father. The two were cast in the ABC sitcom “Full Houseâ€? at the age of nine months, sharing the role of Michelle Tanner for the entire series’ run from 1987 to 1995. After two more sitcoms, they branched out into producing. The Olsens are authors and businesswomen, with the majority of their time now spent on their luxury fashion design business. Their combined net worth is estimated in the $300 million range.

FAMOUS SIBLINGS (continued):
• The American pop band Hanson, consisting of three brothers Isaac, Taylor, and Zac have sold more than 16 million records, and have had eight Top 40 albums. When their first album “Middle of Nowhere” was released in 1997, Isaac was 17, Taylor, 14, and Zac, just 12 years old. The album sold 10 million copies worldwide. The young brothers were nominated for three Grammy Awards in 1998. • New Jersey brothers Paul, Joe, and Nicholas Jonas have sold upwards of 17 million records. Formed in 2005, they are the youngest band to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. • Baby boomers will remember the character of Opie Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show,” a role that Ron Howard played for eight years. The Oklahoma-born Howard appeared in his first movie at 18 months, but had his first credited role at age 4. As a teenager, he began a six-year stint as Richie Cunningham on the popular sitcom “Happy Days.” At age 25, he left the series to focus on a career as a director. His many successful films include Cocoon, Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, The Da Vinci Code and Frost/Nixon. Ron Howard has cast his younger brother Clint in 16 of the films he has directed. Clint was also a child star, appearing in the 1960s series “Gentle Ben” as the son of a Florida Everglades game warden who kept a bear as a pet. Ron is worth a little more than his brother -- $140 million to Clint’s $20 million.
• There were more sets of siblings competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics than any other. Seven sets of siblings on Team USA competed either as teammates or as rivals, along with Ukraine’s female twins, three sisters from Switzerland, another three sisters from Canada, and two brothers from Norway. Two of the three Canadian sisters took gold and silver in the moguls event. In the men’s double luge event, two Austrian brothers won the silver medal, while two Latvian brothers took the Bronze. Dutch twin brothers won gold and bronze in the men’s 500-meter speedskating race. Over the years, there have been 19 families who have had three or more siblings compete at the Winter Olympics. The record is held by the Spanish Fernandez Ochoa family, who had three brothers and two sisters competing. • The Aurness brothers were born in the 1920s to a businessman and his journalist wife. James was the elder, who had his eyes set on being a World War II fighter pilot, but his height of 6’7” made it impossible. Instead, he served as an Army infantryman in Italy, where his leg was severely injured by machine-gun fire. After the war, James and his brother Peter, also a WWII vet, pursued careers in the entertainment field and both became well-known television actors in very different roles. James, who dropped the “u” in his name, became James Arness, the star of TV’s “Gunsmoke,” a long-running western set in 1870s Kansas. For 20 years from 1955 to 1975, Arness was Marshal Matt Dillon on the series, along with several made-for-TV “Gunsmoke” movies after the regular series ended. His brother changed his name to Peter Graves and became famous in his role of Jim Phelps, the director of the Impossible Missions Force on TV’s “Mission Impossible” from 1967 to 1973 and again from 1988 to 1990. The highly-successful 1980s comedy Airplane! films featured Graves as Captain Clarence Oveur, the pilot of a Boeing 707. • The 1977 Saturday Night Fever movie soundtrack album, recorded by siblings, Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb sold 15 million copies and was Album of the Year,

with five songs making it to #1 on the charts. The Gibbs composed half of 1978’s biggest songs, with Barry and Robin once writing three #1 singles in one afternoon. Their sales exceed 220 million records. Of the three, only Barry survives, Maurice having died from intestinal problems in 2003 at 53, and his twin Robin succumbing to cancer in 2012.

UNUSUAL ANIMALS
DOLPHINS April 14 is National Dolphin Day, and what better time to examine the specifics on this group of marine animals! • The word “dolphin” comes from the Greek word “Delphis,” which translates to “womb,” leading to an interpretation of the meaning as “a fish with a womb.” Yet they aren’t fish at all, but mammals who breathe air, give birth to live young and nurse them with milk, and are warm-blooded, maintaining a constant body temperature. They do have hair, but only when they are first born. It falls out within two weeks, and doesn’t grow again for the remainder of their lives. • Of the 43 species of dolphins in the world, 38 are marine dolphins, living in saltwater, and five are river dolphins. The marine dolphins live mainly in shallower
water near coastlines in warmer locations, and are common in Southern California, Chile, the tip of South Africa, and the Gulf of Mexico. Yet they’ve been found from Nova Scotia to Norway. • The most well-known species is the Bottlenose Dolphin. Because of the design of their face, they always appear to be smiling. The Bottlenose is large, ranging from 10 to 14 feet long (3 to 4.3 m) and weighing up to 1,100 pounds (499 kg). Their size varies according to their location, with living in cooler bodies of water a larger size than those in warmer temperatures. • Dolphins come up for air every few minutes, only able to remain submerged for up to 4 ½ minutes without a breath. While traveling in their pods, each has a distinctive whistle that helps the others recognize them. • We’ve all seen photos of dolphins leaping high into the air. A dolphin can vault up to 20 feet (6.1 m) into the air before splashing back into the water. It could be they are dislodging parasites such as sucker fish or barnacles, or to escape predators. • The number of a dolphin’s teeth varies from eight up to 250, with only one set of teeth for life. Consuming between 10 and 35 pounds (4.5 to 15.9 kg) of food each day, they use their teeth to catch their prey, but not to chew it, rather, they swallow their dinner whole. • As far as senses, they have excellent vision, both in and out of the water, with special corneas that adapt to both conditions. Although their ear openings are only small the middle ear, it’s believed that sound moves to the inner ear via fat lobes located in the jaw and other bones in the skull. Their sense of smell is poor, due to the absence of olfactory nerves. • Dolphins are the second most intelligent animals, behind human beings. MRI scans of dolphin brains indicate a large brain with an intricate neocortex, and capable of experiencing emotions. They are highly trainable, and actually pass their knowledge on to fellow dolphins. They exhibit concern for other animals, staying and helping the
injured, even saving the lives of humans in some cases. • Did you know that the orca killer whale is actually a member of the dolphin family, the largest member of Delphinidae category? • Living in the wild, a male dolphin will have a lifespan of 40 to 45 years, while a female can live to age 50.

Marion Cotillard
HOLLYWOOD -- The next time you hear "It's an honor just to be nominated for an Oscar," you'll know it means once you get the nomination you need to land your next films. Up next for Matt Damon ("The Martian") are "Jason Bourne," with Julia Stiles, "The Danish Girl" Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones, arriving July 29; "The Great Wall," with Willem Dafoe; "Suburbicon," written by the Coen Brothers, directed by and co-starring George Clooney, with Josh Brolin and Julianne Moore; and "Downsizing," with Reese Witherspoon and Jason Sudeikis, coming in 2017. Bryan Cranston ("Trumbo") has completed the comedy "Get a Job," with Miles Teller, Anna Kendrick and Marcia Gay Harden (now in theaters); the crime drama "The Infiltrator," with Diane Kruger, Benjamin Bratt and John Leguizamo (out Aug. 31); and John Steinbeck's 1936 novel "In Dubious Battle," directed by and starring James Franco, Robert Duvall, Ed Harris, Sam Shepard, Zach Graff, Josh Hutcherson and Selena Gomez, coming in the fall. Cranston is currently shooting the comedy/drama "The Disaster Artist," with Jennifer Garner. Michael Fassbender ("Steve Jobs") has completed five films: "Light Between Oceans," with Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz, for Sept. 2 release; "X-Men: Apocalypse," May 27; "Assassin's Creed," with Oscar winners Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons, out Dec. 21; and "Weightless," with Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. The fifth movie, "Trespass Against Us," with Brendan Gleeson, filmed in 2014, had financial woes and is awaiting a release date. Eddie Redmayne ("The Danish Girl") has completed "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," with Colin Farrell, Jon Voight and Ron Perlman out Nov. 18. Cate Blanchett ("Carol") has "Weightless"; "Jungle Book: Origins," due Oct. 6; and "Thor: Ragnarok" with Chris Hemsworth.
Jennifer Lawrence ("Joy") has "X-Men: Apocalypse" coming May 27, and the sci/fi film "Passengers," with Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen and Laurence Fishburne, due Dec. 21. Charlotte Rampling ("45 Years") is next in the Brit film "The Sense of an Ending," with Jim Broadbent and "Downton Abbey's" Michelle Dockery. Saoirse Ronan ("Brooklyn") is taking on Chekov's "The Seagull," with Annette Bening, and "Loving Vincent" (Van Gogh), with Douglas Booth. Brad Pitt has chosen the spy film "Five Seconds of Silence" (set in 1942) to shoot next with Robert Zemeckis directing and co-starring Marion Cotillard. Tom Cruise has "Jack Reacher -- Never Go Back" with Cobie Smolders (due Oct. 21) and the crime thriller "Mena," with Domhnall Gleason, for January release. He is now preparing a reboot of "The Mummy," about Navy Seals who search for terrorists in a bunker and accidentally find a cursed mummy's tomb. Sounds like he switching from action star to horror hero ... Oh, Mummy mia! (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
*** Q: Are they really making an updated "MacGyver" TV series? — Paul T., Atlanta
Q: I love Tobias Menzies of "Outlander." Can you tell me what else I can see him in? — Layla F., via email A: If you're looking for older stuff, you can see the talented Brit in "Casino Royale," season three of "Game of Thrones" (a quick IMDB check shows he'll be in season six as well), "Atonement" and "Rome." Currently airing across the pond on the BBC is a TV series called "Night Manager" — a six-part adaptation of John Le Carre's spy thriller — where Tobias co-stars alongside Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie. AMC grabbed up the rights here in the States, where the miniseries will begin airing on April 19. And, of course, you can catch Tobias in "Outlander" on Starz; season two begins April 9. *** Q: Please tell me that my husband heard correctly: Is Harrison Ford reprising his role of Indiana Jones? — Glenda R., via Facebook A: He is indeed! Harrison and Steven Spielberg are reteaming to bring us this fifth film in the series, which is expected to be released July 19, 2019. Alan Horn, chairman of the Walt Disney Studios, said in a recent press release: "Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can't wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It's rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn't be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven." And let's all just forget that fourth movie ever happened.
A: Lucas Till, who just finished filming the role of Havok in "X-Men: Apocalypse" (in theaters May 27), will star as the resourceful secret agent in the CBS pilot of the "MacGyver" Lucas Till reboot. He'll play our 20-something hero who's recruited into a secret organization to help save lives using his special set of skills. Till joins Joshua Boone, who will play his best friend, Gunner, and George Eads (of "CSI" fame), who has been cast as Lincoln. *** Q: "Vikings" is one of my favorite dramas on television. Will it be back for another season? — Frank H., via email A: The History channel has renewed the historical drama for a 20-episode fifth season, which is set to air in 2017. Also, Jonathan Rhys Myers has been tapped to join the series, but his role has not yet been revealed. Jonathan plays bad guys so well ("The Tudors," "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" and "Dracula") that I hope he'll also play a baddie for this series. After all, that's how we love him most. In case you're interested, you can see Jonathan from May 30 through June 2 during the four-night miniseries event of the reboot of Alex Haley's "Roots," which will air simultaneously on A&E, History and Lifetime. * It was 19th-century Russian playwright and short story writer Anton Chekhov who made the following sage observation: "Love, friendship, respect, do not unite people as much as a common hatred for something." * If you suffer from galeophobia you're certainly not alone; Steven Spielberg's 1975 film "Jaws" may have popularized the fear of sharks, but it certainly didn't start it. Logically, though, swinophobia makes more sense -- pigs kill more people every year than sharks do. * You might be surprised to learn that Harriet Tubman -- famous for her work as a conductor on the Underground Railroad -- also served as a Union spy during the Civil War, providing key intelligence that aided in the capture of Jacksonville, Florida. She also was the first woman to lead an armed assault during the Civil War; the Combahee River Raid freed 750 South Carolina slaves. She even continued her humanitarian work after the war, opening the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged and Indigent in Albany, New York. * It was early 20th-century English schoolmaster and lexicographer Henry Watson Fowler who made the following sage observation: "Display of superior knowledge is as great a vulgarity as display of superior wealth -- greater, indeed, inasmuch as knowledge should tend more definitely than wealth towards discretion and good manners."

You're unlikely to be bitten by one (due in part to the species' extreme avoidance of confrontation, coral snakes account for less than 1 percent of all snakebites in the U.S.), but if you are, the snake's neurotoxic venom can cause severe pain and death. However, snake-bite experts say that in some cases, a bite will result in no symptoms at all for 12 hours -- at which point the victim dies from sudden respiratory failure. * The most common pigment in the world is chlorophyll. * According to the nuns who worked with her, Mother Teresa's last words were, "Jesus, I love you. Jesus, I love you." According to her doctor, the last thing she said was actually, "I can't breathe."
* Ancient Romans recognized three distinct forms of kissing: The word "basium" denoted a kiss between acquaintances, "osculum" was used for a kiss between close friends, and "suavium" described a kiss between lovers. *** Thought for the Day: "Catch-and-release -- that's like running down pedestrians in your car and then, when they get up and limp away, saying, 'Off you go! That's fine. I just wanted to see if I could hit you.'" -- Ellen DeGeneres (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
* Someday, Saturn might not be the only planet in our solar system that has rings. Those who study such things say that Mars' gravitational pull on its largest moon, Phobos, could cause a catastrophic breakup, with the moon's debris forming a ring around the planet -- in 20 million to 40 million years. * It's been reported that before Japan came into contact with the West, people in that country did not kiss. * When the mantis shrimp attacks its prey, the swing of its claw is so powerful that even if it misses, the resulting shock wave can be enough to stun or kill its prey.

A PATRIOTIC PLEDGE •In the late 1800s a magazine called “The Youth’s Companion” was very popular. Editor James Upman promoted education tirelessly and instigated a program of premiums for subscribers. The prizes included such things as patriotic posters, historical books, and especially American flags. He began a concerted campaign encouraging all schools to install American flags, and he sold them the flags. •In 1892 Upman was preoccupied with the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the New World. He wanted a nationwide celebration on that day to underscore his belief that the American system of free universal education was the source of the country’s success. He asked Francis Bellamy, who worked for the National Education Association, to help him create a program for schools for the Columbus Day event. •Bellamy wrote a speech, devised a flag-raising ceremony, and penned a simple creed that school children could recite in unison as the flag was raised. The pledge that Bellamy wrote was short so that even the youngest of schoolchildren would be able to memorize it. These details were published in the September edition of the magazine. •On October 12, 1892, millions of children all over the United States recited this creed while saluting the flags. This started a tradition. In 1942 Congress recognized the

creed as the official national pledge of the U.S., now called the Pledge of Allegiance. •The original version was: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. In 1954, the words “under God” were added.
A PATRIOTIC SONG •Born in Massachusetts in 1859, Katharine Lee Bates grew up to become a professor of English literature at Wellesley College. She was also a prolific writer, authoring many books, articles, poems, and stories.
•Two years later, her poem was published in a magazine called “The Congregationalist” for their Fourth of July edition, and it reached an even wider audience when it was reprinted in “The Boston Evening Transcript” in 1904. •Meanwhile, a New Jersey musician named Samuel Ward had written a hymn called “Materna.” The song’s first line was, ‘O Mother dear, Jerusalem’ and the tune was metrically identical to Katharine’s poem. It was natural for Katharine’s poem and Samuel’s tune to match up, and soon people were singing the new song. •By the time Katharine died in 1929, the song whose lyrics she had penned had become a national favorite. •Many people approached Congress asking for this song to be chosen as America’s national anthem because it is simple, beautiful, and easy to sing. Even though “The Star Spangled Banner” was chosen in 1931, many people still feel that Katharine and Samuel’s song would make a better national anthem. The song is called “America the Beautiful.”

SUPER SPRING SALADS Salads are in need of a new image beyond the iceberg lettuce and ranch dressing that we commonly think of. A salad can be so much more than a plain and boring "healthy" dish. These days, everyone is putting a twist on salads. There are many ways to incorporate the numerous varieties of spring vegetables into a "super" salad by adding a combination of avorful ingredients and simple preparation methods. Here are a few tips to make a salad that will appeal to even the pickiest eater:
Salad isn't just for vegetables anymore! Try adding apples, citrus segments, grapes, strawberries or blueberries to your plate of colorful vegetables. Just like many vegetables, fruits contain antioxidants that can help protect against certain forms of cancer as well as reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Try to avoid or limit the amount of dried fruits you add to your salad, such as dried cranberries or blueberries. These often have added sugars that can up the calorie content of your meal.
Add a healthy crunch! A few toasted walnuts or almonds, spicy baked garbanzo beans and quick pickled vegetables are a great addition to any salad.
Make it colorful! Add some protein! Skip the iceberg and opt for spinach or another dark leafy green. Dark leafy greens supply a tremendous amount of nutrients, including vitamins A, C and K, iron, calcium, ďŹ ber. Add in some carrots, red bell peppers, tomatoes, blanched asparagus, beets or any other vegetable to add color, and you'll get additional nutrients critical for maintaining eyesight, bone health and digestive health.
Protein takes longer to digest, so it keeps us full longer. Protein also is needed for healthy muscles. Beans are easy ways to add protein.
Find a healthier dressing! There now are quite a variety of light dressings and vinaigrettes to choose from. Vinegar-based dressings typically have less fat and calories than creamy dressings. Oil and vinegar is a healthy choice in limited amounts -- the healthy fat from the oil helps your body to absorb some of the vitamins from the salad. Find one of these dressings that works for you. Creating a healthy salad can be a simple way to satisfy recommendations for fruit and vegetable intake. Try my recipe for super salad with zesty pickled vegetables and create a new way to eat well this spring!
SUPER SALAD WITH ZESTY PICKLED VEGETABLES You can prepare the pickled vegetables and the salad dressing up to three days ahead. Just shake the dressing to recombine. . To quickly pickle vegetables: • • • • • • •

In a small saucepan, bring vinegar, sugar, salt, garlic powder, onion powder and hot sauce to a boil. Remove from heat and add vegetables, herbs and peppercorns; let sit until just tender, about 10 minutes. Drain liquid and discard peppercorns. Set aside for the salad. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has unveiled a new online mapping tool to show the levels of health in various parts of the country. Medicare beneficiaries are grouped by geographic location, race, health outcomes, sex, age and more. Eighteen health conditions are defined, as well as use of hospitals and emergency rooms, rate of readmissions and mortality rates. The best feature is that the mapping tool can even be broken down into the county level of each state.
Our Attorneys can guide you through the litigation process and take advantage of these alternative resolutions.

While the map developers planned to use it to identify areas where there are problems (below-average health because of lack of access to health care, for example), the tool is also a good way for us to compare our own health to those around us and around the country. To use the map, go online to www.cms.gov and put Mapping Medicare Disparities Tool in the search box. Then click Get Started. Using the dropdown list, put in your parameters. Select year, state or county, condition, sex, age, race and more. At that point you have a choice: You can either click Download or mouse over the various states or counties, depending on which you selected. (If you chose the county level, you can expand the screen to make it easier to see.)

Specifically the study focused on Android diabetes apps and looked at whether there was indication that private information was being disclosed to third parties. (Android has the biggest market share of phone operating systems.) Researchers found over 270 diabetes apps and chose 75 of them to monitor for transmission analysis. Within six months, 60 of those apps were no longer available. Of the group remaining, 81 percent didn't even have a privacy policy. Of the ones that had privacy policies, only four would even ask if information could be shared.
Beware: Medical Apps for Smartphones There's so much we can do with the new smartphones. But just because we can doesn't mean we should. A study from the Illinois Institute of Technology Chicago-Kent College of Law revealed that a great many mobile health apps were sharing private medical information with third parties without the user being aware. Granted, for those of us with health conditions to monitor, a phone app can be handy to keep us on track. Sometimes our physicians recommend it. Some apps are even approved as prescriptions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Of the 75 chosen for transmission analysis, there was a wide variety of information sent off to third parties: 86 percent placed tracker cookies in the app, and most of them shared information whether they had a privacy policy or not. Of the apps that actually had privacy policies, only 12 asked for the user's permission before sending off their data to others. Ten shared the information with business partners, and 16 used the information for ads. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act bars medical staff from disclosing your private information to others, but it doesn't cover phone apps. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The official waved the other men over. "And what is your reason for visiting Cuba?" One man took the lead, stood straight in front of the guard, held his chin up and flashed a genuine smile. "We are here to drink your rum and smoke your cigars, sir." The guard stared back at him with a stern face that gradually lit up into a return smile. "My friends ... welcome to Havana, Cuba." The seven men, most wearing tailored suits and dress shoes, boarded the plane the old-fashioned way. Walking across the tarmac, careful not to walk over the line that separated passenger traffic from the earmuff-wearing air traffic controllers, they boarded the plane one by one, strapped in and flew off to a place few travel to from America: Havana, Cuba. A scene from Obama's latest visit to Cuba? Or was it a team sent from President Eisenhower's administration? Neither. This was during the days of George W. Bush, when it was still illegal to conduct commerce on the island if you were a U.S. citizen. Besides? Who wanted to go to a place that people were literally dying to leave? Shouldn't the traffic be going the other way? They came in on a technicality, as religious humanitarian relief workers. Once in Havana, the six men with their jackets draped over their arm waved the other gentleman, clad in jeans and a white safari shirt, through the customary screening room first. "Separate parties," explained one of the men. The man had his papers examined as a close-talking guard asked for his plans and purpose for visiting Cuba. "I'm here on a humanitarian mission." "Here?" asked the Cuban official. He seemed stunned. "What makes you think Castro and Cuba need your help?" Before the man could answer, the official ordered him off to a separate waiting room, told to sit and wait so they talk more "in a bit."
Last year, more than 150 men came the other way ... they fled Cuba by any means possible, though most ran from the team hotels whenever they had the chance to play baseball off the island. They defect for a dream, and they wish to make it in the big leagues, just like Minnie Minoso, Tony Perez, Tony Oliva, Luis Tiant, Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro. They want to walk through the big ball orchards in the Bronx, LA or Chicago ... anywhere they can play the game they felt they were born to play. Most players in the majors remember different times, times the rum and cigars couldn't possibly compare to the life those travelers had left in America. They remember their teachers telling them to shut their eyes and ask God to provide them with lunch that day, only to open them and see an empty plate staring back up at them. The plate would remain empty until they were instructed to do the same thing, only this time to ask Castro for food, opening their eyes to a plate full of black beans and rice. They remember playing under spotty light, the watchful eyes of fans and Castro's men. They escaped on makeshift rafts, hid under trucks and buses, spent everything they had. They, too, had a mission ... just a chance to walk in through a gate and hear the stern-looking official bark the following command to them: "Play ball!"
Welcome to America.

DEAR DR. ROACH: How can I find the most successful, experienced kidney doctor? Would I be better off with a doctor who has his or her own practice, or one who works in a hospital? My kidney function is at 32 percent, down from 44 percent four years ago due to hypertension. -- J.A. ANSWER: I often have tried to point out when a teaching hospital or special expertise is critical to having the best chance for a good outcome. For chronic kidney disease, the expertise of the kidney specialist is seldom at issue, because virtually all kidney doctors are very experienced and are expert at taking care of this condition. The main goal will be to slow down the decline of kidney function, but many people in your situation eventually will need dialysis. In my opinion, what you want to look at carefully is the dialysis facility, which vary greatly in quality. I found a watchdog group with an interesting look at dialysis centers at http://projects.propublica.org/dialysis/. This uses Medicare data to evaluate hospitalization, infection and even mortality. It's not a perfect tool, but it gives you some information on which to base your decision. Find a doctor affiliated with the best dialysis facility around. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a generally healthy 81-year-old lady. I retired from teaching two years ago. I had a very strange situation about a month ago. I was sitting on the toilet and suddenly had pain in both my legs, and I could not move my feet, toes or any other parts. My husband gave me two aspirin, which did not help the pain. He then gave me an oxycodone 5 mg from our son, who was recovering from a badly broken arm. The oxycodone worked after about an hour and a half, and I was able to get up and walk. My husband thought it was probably a leg cramp. I went to see my regular doctor the next day. He thought that I might have a blood clot in the leg and sent me to the hospital for more testing. After ultrasound testing, they did not find anything abnormal. I am now afraid to drive by myself or even to be at home alone. Do you have any idea what this might have been, or what I should do at this point? ANSWER: Sudden onset of pain and weakness does not sound like a blood clot to me. It sounds like a neurological event, such as a pressed nerve (actually nerves, since it was both sides). It is possibly in the brain or the spinal cord, but that seems less likely. A leg cramp usually would not be on both sides and usually does not cause weakness. I don't agree with you taking your son's oxycodone. It's a very powerful and dangerous narcotic. Five mg is a relatively small dose, but people can be very sensitive to narcotics, and deaths have occurred from people using a friend or family member's drugs. If your symptoms don't occur again, I would suspect that this was caused by too much pressure put on the nerves. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BILLBOARDS WARN OF CANCER RISK: HOT DOGS IN SCHOOL MEALS Doctors Urge Prevention for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month; Billboards are Posted in Six States with the Highest Colorectal Cancer Death Rates WASHINGTON—The Physicians Committee—a nonprofit of 12,000 doctors—has placed 23 billboards in 12 cities warning the public that cancer-causing processed meats such as hot dogs don’t belong in school meals. The billboards are posted in Nevada, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and West Virginia, which are the six states with the highest colorectal cancer death rates, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The billboards feature the image of a skull and crossbones formed from a sausage patty and hot dogs and warn “Cancer-Causing Foods Don’t Belong in Schools. Processed Meats Cause Cancer. DropTheHotDog.org.” The billboards coincide with National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. “Citizens in colorectal cancer hot spots are facing death by deli meat,” says Physicians Committee dietitian Karen Smith, R.D. “Taking cold cuts and other processed meats like hot dogs and bacon out of school meals could help prevent future fatalities.” The doctors group also sent food service directors a toolkit on the dangers of processed meats and tips for removing them from school meals and petitioned mayors. A recent World Health Organization report found that processed meats such as hot dogs, pepperoni, bacon, sausage, and deli meats are “carcinogenic to humans.” The authors highlighted a meta-analysis that found each 50 gram portion of processed meat—approximately the size of a typical hot dog—eaten daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent. The report also observed associations between red and processed meat products and stomach, pancreatic, and prostate cancers. In October, the Physicians Committee filed a petition calling upon the U.S. Department of Agriculture to stop offering processed meats for pur-
chase, subsidy, and reimbursement under the National School Lunch Program and National School Breakfast Program. The petition asks USDA to encourage schools that offer processed meats to include alternatives to these products in menus.
Contact: We welcome you to be in touch with us about any questions you might have, and also would like to know if your school will commit to removing processed meat. wrap or tape -- when she sinks her claws into the tape, the uncomfortable sensation will stop the clawing. Next, give Tara some things that she CAN claw, and that she can spend her time with: multiple scratching posts and toys.
CAT TEARS UP FURNITURE DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We adopted a friend's cat sight unseen. "Tara" is a beautiful young tiger-striped cat, but she claws at every furniture leg in the house. My sofa, for example, is pretty much ruined. How can I get this behavior to stop? -- Patricia, via email DEAR PATRICIA: Almost all cats claw at handy chair legs, and often prefer the corners of sofas -- the more expensive, the better, it seems. However, you shouldn't have to sacrifice your furniture for a friend's cat. There are a few things you can do to minimize the scratching. I can't guarantee that it will go away, but you should be able to save future sofas from the same fate. First, protect your furniture legs (specifically the furniture that Tara is targeting the most) by wrapping thick cloth or even multiple layers of newspaper around them, and taping in place with masking tape. (Duct tape could leave behind residue.) To discourage Tara from clawing at the protective layer, cover it with plastic
Third, spent more time with Tara, playing, petting or just being in the same room. Help her work off extra energy and assure her that despite the change in homes, she has nothing to worry about -- and much of the anxiety that may be behind her obsessive clawing may ease. If these steps don't reduce the amount of furniture clawing going on, talk to Tara's vet about medication that could ease her anxiety.
New Dog May Have to Wait DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'd like to get a dog, but my younger brother is very afraid of dogs because he was once bitten by one. How can I tell him not to be afraid, so I can have a dog? -- Christine in Mesa, Arizona DEAR CHRISTINE: You might not be able to get a dog right now, unfortunately. If your parents don't think that it's a good idea because your younger brother is still very fearful of them, then that may be that. However, there are some other things you may be able to do, even if you can't have your own dog. You could spend time with a friend or a neighbor's dog. That's a good way to learn how to walk, feed and even train a dog. I myself grew up around many dog owners, and by spend-
HAIR WREATH Q: I have a hair wreath in an elaborate frame. It is a family heirloom from the Civil War-era. I am curious about it. -- Hope, Canton, Ohio A: Human hair was used during the Victorian-era to make jewelry such as rings, lockets and bracelets. Hair also was used in wreaths, usually as mementos of a deceased family member. The wreaths often were cased in deep satin-lined frames and displayed in the family parlor. The practice was abandoned after about 1910.

ing time with them, paying attention to how they gave their dog commands and the different training methods they used, I got a wider perspective and better education on training dogs than a book might have provided. You could volunteer at a local shelter. While kids under 18 may be restricted from working directly with the pets residing there, many shelters have programs designed especially for school-age kids so they can contribute to shelter
pets' care, and learn about caring for these animals. Consider getting a different pet to care for, as well. Learning to care for animals is a really important skill. Plus, your brother can and should have a say in what kind of pet to get -- and he'll share the responsibility for caring for it. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. I occasionally have seen hair jewelry and wreaths in shops, and prices vary. A framed wreath is often offered in the $250$500 range, depending on condition and workmanship.

*** Q: My granddad contributed to several WPA guides that were published during the 1930s and '40s. He would like to find the one issued about Texas but has been unable to find a copy. Can you help us? -- Sarah, Jasper, Texas
*** Q: I have a 1958 Ballyhoo pinup calendar and have been offered $50 for it. It is in mint condition. -- James, Portsmouth, Virginia
A: The WPA Guide to Texas was first published in 1940 by Hastings House. An original edition is fairly difficult to find. I did locate a reprint from 1986 at abe.com for $50. If you're unfamiliar with abe.com, it is a wonderful Internet source for book searches. *** Q: I have managed to collect about 250 matchbooks. Can you recommend a reference so I can establish values for some of the rarer ones in my collection? -- Charlie, Davenport, Iowa
A: According to Collectibles Price Guide by Judith Miller, your calendar is worth in the $150-$200 range. Keep in mind, however, that this price range is only an opinion based on Miller's take on the marketplace. The actual value of an item -- any item -- is what someone is willing to plunk down for it in cold cash.
