• A simple carousel was the inspiration for W alt Disney’s dream of Disneyland. Every Sunday , Disney took his two daughters to play at Los Angeles’ GrifďŹ th Park, and he sat on the park bench and watched. As he sat, he noted that most parents had nothing to do , and envisioned a place where both children and their parents could have fun together.

• Disney ’s ambition was for an eight-acre park called Mickey M ouse P ark, located near his studios in Burbank. He planned themed areas throughout the park, and as his vision grew, he soon saw that eight acres was not nearly large enough. In 1953, Disney hired the Stanford Research Institute to search for a 100-acre site within the Los Angeles metropolitan area that was accessible by freeway . The company soon located a 160acre orange grove in semi-rural Orange County near Anaheim. • Walt borrowed against his life insurance, sold his second house, and along with his brother Roy mortgaged everything they owned to raise the funds to build Disneyland.

DISNEYLAND (continued):
• Just shy of a year later , Disneyland held its opening day. Its first day was to be limited to by-invitation-only guests for a preview of flying elephants, giant teacups, moon rockets, and a castle. Six thousand invitations were sent to Disney studio workers, the park’ s construction workers, the press, and officials of company sponsors. Unfortunately, because of counterfeit tickets, an additional 22,000 people entered the park.
to 35 cents each. (Current ticket prices start at $95.00 per day.) • To avoid overcrowding, Walt Disney limited daily attendance to 20,000. It took just seven weeks for the park to welcome its one-millionth guest. T en years after opening day , more than 50 million visitors had passed through the gates. • Shortly after Disneyland’s opening, Walt Disney was heard to say, “We’re gonna kick ourselves for not buying everything within a radius of ten miles around here.”

The original 10 elephants, based on Disney ’s 1941 film Dumbo , didn ’t debut until three months after the park opened. When former U.S. President Harry S. Truman visited Disneyland in 1957, he declined a ride on the revolving pachyderms. It wasn’t due to motion sickness – the Democrat didn’t want to associate with an elephant, the symbol of the Republican Party. public eye, never allowing himself to be photographed with a cigarette. H e also never smoked around children. After feeling poorly for several months, in N ovember of 1966, he entered the hospital for leg and neck pain. It was a busy time for Disney , with construction for Florida ’s Walt Disney W orld having already begun. Disney was quickly diagnosed with lung cancer, and passed away just six weeks later at age 65. It would be nearly five more years until the Florida theme park was completed. • Prior to 1985, during the off-season, Disneyland was closed every M onday and T uesday. Since then, it has been open daily, year round, with the exception of the national day of mourning following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, following the severe 1994 Northridge earthquake, and in 2001 at the time of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. • The boat ride through the “Pirates of the Caribbean” attraction was personally supervised by W alt Disney. He had originally envisioned it as a walk-through wax museum, but after the success of “It’s a Small World’s” boat concept, he adjusted his designs. “Pirates” was the last ride W alt Disney would be involved with. It was under construction when he passed away and opened in 1967, three months after his death. A new section of the park, N ew Orleans Square, was built at a cost of $15 million, ironically the same cost as the real Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The cost of the Pirates attraction came in at $8 million. The Spanish-style building was built with a 3,000 square foot apartment on the second floor, intended for entertaining and relaxing by Walt and his brother R oy. Following Walt’s death, the space never served its original purpose.

KANGAROOS Let’s get hopping by taking a look at the kangaroo, the most common member of the marsupial group. • Marsupials are distinctive in that they carry their young around in pouches. Besides kangaroos, the group includes Tasmanian devils, wallabies, and pademelos. Although kangaroos give live birth, the gestation period is very short, only 21 to 38 days, but as soon as the offspring is born (up to four to four at one time), they climb from the rom the birth canal into the pouch where h w here the mother’s mammary glands nds are located. There they will continue ntinue to develop for several months. onths. At birth, the tiny hairless kangaangaroo is smaller than a bee, ranging nging from 0.2 to 0.9 inches (5 to 25 to 2 5 mm) in size. • The four different species ies of o f kangaroos all reside in Australia stralia – the red kangaroo , the eastern, the western gray, and the antilopine kangaroo. The red kangaroo is the largest, as well as the largest of all marsupials. Its length from head to rump is between 3.25 and 5.25 feet (1.0 and 1.6 m), with the tail adding another 40 inches or so (101.6 cm). Its weight can reach 200 lbs. (90 kg.). The musky-rat kangaroo measures just 8 inches (20.3 cm) long, weighing just 12 oz. (340 grams). Its tail contributes another 6 inches (15.2 cm). • Of course, the most familiar characteristic is their method of transportation – hopping! They are the only large animals that do so . One hop usually measures a distance of 15 feet (7 m) and kangaroos have the ability to jump up to three times their height, yet the red kangaroo can leap an amazing 25 feet (8 m) up to
10 feet (3 m) in the air. • The kangaroo ’s top speed can reach close to 40 mph (60 km/hr), with normal “ cruising” speed about 15 mph (25 km/hr). In addition to their strong hind legs, they also use their muscular tail as a means of pushing off the ground. • Oddly enough, kangaroos can only move their back legs together at the same time and are incapable of s moving them individually. In fact, m if one leg is seriously injured, the kangaroo will probably die because it kang cannot cann move about freely . H owever, when wh a kangaroo is swimming, it can c kick each leg independently. • The habitat of kangaroos varies by species. The tiny muskyrat kangaroo beds down in little nests in Queensland’s rainforests. Gray kangaroos like Australian and Tasmanian forests, while the antilopine likes the eucalyptus woodlands. Their diet consists of grasses, flowers, leaves, ferns, moss, and the occasional insect. Their digestive system is like that of a cow , regurgitating their food and re-chewing it before digesting it. • Kangaroos don’t live very long in the wild, only about four to six years. In captivity, their lifespan increases to upwards of 20 years. They have poor eyesight, with a large number hopping about completely blind. • The adult male can be called by three names, a buck, boomer , or jack. The females are known as does, flyers, or jills. The youngsters are referredto as joeys, and a group of roos is called a mob or troop.

rect the word "flapdoodler." During Victorian times, any annoyingly boastful or self-righteous person was considered to be a flapdoodler.
• It was beloved 20th-century American dancer , singer and actor Fred Astaire who made the following sage observation: "The higher up you go , the more mistakes you are allowed. Right at the top, if you make enough of them, it's considered to be your style." • If you're of a certain age, you may remember the popular cartoon "Far Side," by Gary Larson. You may not realize, however, that this daily chuckle influenced science as well as humor. In a 1982 drawing, Larson dubbed the spikes at the end of a stegosaurus's tail the "thagomizer" — which is what paleontologists call the spikes today. • If you write the word "suns" upside down, it still says "suns."

WORKING PAST AGE 60 What happens when your friends all retire and you don't? "Women Still at W ork: Professionals Over Sixty and On the J ob," by Elizabeth F . Fideler , explores why senior women are still working and what happens when we do. Fideler gathered her research from both surveys and indepth interviews, comparing generations, economic climates and preferences. Why are senior women still working? We enjoy what we're doing. W e're making contributions. W e need the money or the health insurance that comes with the job. We're trying to beef up our retirement nest egg. W e get more out of being engaged on a daily basis with real challenges. What happens when our friends retire and we don't? We miss opportunities for socializing, unless we take matters in hand and organize time together when we are available. W e sometimes have to keep repeating answers to the question about why we're still working, and try to explain the sense of accomplishment we get from continuing to work. This can be wearing. Instead, when the friendships no longer fit, look for socializing opportunities in new areas where you don't have to justify what you're doing.

of some colleagues, with hundreds of years' worth of clinical experience, showed me that many of us, unlike Dr. Sacks, had never heard of this syndrome, so I am glad to be able to bring it up.
There is one bonus to continuing to work, despite the push to retire. Studies have shown that retiring early can shorten one's life, especially if we've worked for years. Another study of 6,000 participants showed that we'll have a 15 percent lower risk of death if we maintain a purpose in our life and keep working. Anxiety and depression can be a result of retiring when we really don't want to.
Charles Bonnet syndrome, also called visual release hallucinations, occur in people who are losing or have lost vision. It does seem to be more common in the elderly, but it has been reported in children. Most people who have had these hallucinations do not bring it up to their doctor , probably because they fear being labeled as having a psychiatric disease. It is thought to happen due to the firing of nerve cells in areas of the brain that process vision when they are deprived of visual input from the optic nerve.
If you're considering retiring, take a look at this book before you do. Go online to Amazon.com and you'll find it in paperback, hard copy and for Kindle. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
VISION LOSS MAY CAUSE HALLUCINATIONS DEAR DR. ROACH: When I lost the vision in my eye in an accident, I had Charles Bonnet syndrome hallucinations. I am 80 years old, and I went completely blind in one eye. There were patterns that I saw whenever my eye was unfocused, which pretty much obscured everything. I saw complicated figures like very bright TV. I have read Oliver Sacks' explanation in his latest book, called "Hallucinations." What I viewed is exactly how he described CBS. Seven months later, I am still having hallucinations, but they are much subdued and not very interesting. I think it is gradually disappearing. What concerns me is that none of the hospital personnel knew of the syndrome. The best that was offered was that it was from a bladder infection, which I did not think I had. I imagine that there are a lot of old blind folks who think they are crazy , and there is no one to tell them otherwise. I am hoping you might write an explanation for all of us who have failing eyesight and no explanation for what ails us. I had so many interesting visions, and since I knew it was not real, I rather enjoyed it. — L.R. ANSWER: I can't criticize the doctors at your hospital too much, since I had never heard about this type of hallucination before your letter. In fact, a brief survey
There are treatments available, including moving the eyes rapidly back and forth, which often can stop the hallucinations if they are bothersome. There are also medications to stop them in people who don't enjoy them the way you have. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend of mine has been diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and is being treated with prednisone. Can you give me any information about this illness? — G.O. ANSWER: P olymyalgia rheumatica is a common illness, almost always found in people over 50. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the arms and shoulders, and especially in the morning. It responds very well to low to moderate doses (10-20 mg) of prednisone. The prednisone is continued usually for one to two years. PMR often is associated with a more serious condition, temporal (or giant cell) arteritis. Any symptoms of vision loss need to be evaluated immediately, since permanent blindness can result. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of diabetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. COOL OFF WITH FRESH HOMEMADE LEMONADE The forecast called for wind and rain, but that didn't stop 7-year-old Thomas Scott from getting up at dawn on the Saturday morning of our annual festival of neighborhood garage sales. He painted a "Lemonade" sign in multiple colors ("P eople will see it better that way ," he told me) and tied polka-dotted balloons (borrowed from his older brother's balloon-powered-car science project) on posts, and set out cups, ice and two pitchers — one for lemonade, and the other for apple juice ("I'll make more money with more choices," he reasoned). On the side bench were tempting platters of wrapped crispy rice treats and brownies that he and his mom concocted at 7 a.m. while the signage was drying.

THE NEW VILLAINS I think I remember a time when letting your little kid win was the correct and right thing to do . N ow, thanks to PlayStation and Xbo x, it is pretty much impossible to beat them. Over the holidays my nephew showed me his new game, NBA whatever. "Cool," I thought. Well ... it was more than just cool. It was a "mind-bending" experience. I'm not going to date myself, but Blip was our Game Boy, and our basketball game was decided by the guy who could hit the most unmissable corner threes. His game was better than anything I'd ever seen. "Let's play!" he says. "Sure," says me. "What team do you want to be?" Without hesitating, I say the Knicks — my least favorite, favorite team. (H e usually picks the Philadelphia teams, so I always begin a video game with the better team.) After messing around with the uniform selection for , oh, about 20 minutes, he picks his team. "I pick Michael J ordan, Lebron J ames, Kareem, Bird and Tim Duncan," he replies, before handing me a controller with 20 different knobs, levers and buttons. "Good luck!" So the little runt, formerly known as my great little nephew, proceeds to trounce me. Every once in a while, I get Carmelo Anthony to drive to the hoop uncontested, but it ends up as a travel because I have no earthly idea how to make him let go of the ball. "Wanna play again?"

MUST PRESENT AD WHEN LEAVING CAR
Fact is, I can't blame him. On long plane flights I like to play MLB Manager , and I always cheat by choosing the team with the first draft pick and trade until I have an outfield consisting of Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth (T ed Williams at DH), and a starting rotation of Feller, Koufax, Walter Johnson, Cy Young and Greg Maddux. I get upset when we don't win 140 regular season games. But sometimes my team gets swept by the St. Louis Browns in the W orld Series. It happens. H erb Brooks used to say that "all-star teams don't work." This observation, while mostly true, has been disproven by the NBA Olympic "Dream Team" concept, but we get the point, and besides, it's different when it comes to individual leagues. Every year, the New York Yankees field an All-Star team on paper, and they don't (usually) win. Then there's the curious case of K evin Durant. F ans in Oklahoma City are inconsolable — they've lost the face of their franchise ... the only superstar they've known since their inception. Where is he going? H e's going to join Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, to form what will be, in all likelihood, the greatest team of all-time. We've seen this before (Miami Heat), and you know, they probably won't win every game. My only question is, how come Oakland has all this money? What is wrong with the Knicks? My advice to Oklahoma City and all the other franchises struggling to keep pace is to look at this another way: You didn't lose a player, the entire league found a new villain. FREEZE A LITTLE SUMMER The key to enjoying the best summer berries all year long is hidden inside your freezer . A little prep time and cold temperatures are the secret to enjoying fresh summer flavors even in the depths of winter . Not only are berries a tasty treat, they're a healthy one, too . The June 2013 issue of Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter reports on results published in the journal Circulation that "women who ate the most strawberries and blueberries — three or more servings per week — were 34 percent less likely to suffer such an early heart attack." Researchers followed about 93,600 women aged 25 to 42 for 18 years, checking in periodically to see what they were eating and how it was affecting their health. The heart health benefits were likely due partly to the presence of anthocyanin, an antio xidant compound found naturally in bright-red fruits like strawberries. Tufts University researchers also have studied older rats that would approximate 65-year-old humans. After various berries were added to the rats' diets, they were put through a series of tests to evaluate memory (comparable to remembering where you parked your car) and balance (comparable to us walking on a slippery, ice-covered sidewalk). Pretty much every berry studied — blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, cranberries — improved learning, memory and balance in aging rats. Early results have led researchers to move forward with studying these potential benefits using human subjects. Berries offer other health benefits as well. One cup of strawberries provides 140 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C, more than a medium orange. They also provide 16 percent of recommended dietary fiber. This fiber content makes strawberries low on the glycemic index , meaning they help slow the body's process of turning the berries into blood sugar , despite their sweetness. Strawberries also contain potassium, folate and more than 25 percent of recommended manganese, which helps process cholesterol. Likewise, a cup of red raspberries has nearly 50 percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C and

For a nutritious, tasty treat that also may help memory and balance, consider eating fresh berries in the summer and follow the recipes below to preserve summer berries for the winter . Eating berries, whether fresh, preserved or frozen, all year long is a delicious way to improve your health.
PRESERVING BERRIES AND SUGGESTED USES: Just before freezing, gently wash berries in cool water and pat them dry with paper towels. R emove and discard stems, leaves and any under-ripe or damaged fruit. Any of the suggested preservation methods below are a good way to store berries. Freezing berries with sugar helps retain their color and texture. U se berries frozen without adding sugar as an addition to quick breads or cakes. 1. Flash Freezing: Place berries in a single layer on a jelly-roll pan; freeze until firm. Pack into zip-top plastic freezer bags, leaving 1-inch headspace. Squeeze out excess air; seal and freeze up to 8 months. Quick T ip: Add frozen berries to muffin, cake or quick-bread batter; spoon over oatmeal or cereal. 2. Sliced, Crushed or Pureed: Add 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar per quart of berries; gently stir until sugar dissolves. Spoon into plastic freezer jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace.Wipe jar rims clean; secure lids. Freeze up to 12 months.Quick Tip: Use to top off shortcakes, stir into yogurt or layer in an ice-cream parfait. 3. Dry Sugar Pack: Pat 1 quart of berries just until damp. Gently toss with 1/2 to 3/4 cup sugar . Place in a single layer on a jelly-roll pan; freeze until firm. P ack into plastic freezer containers; cover and seal. Freeze up to 12 months. Quick Tip: Add frozen berries to cobblers or pies, stir into pancake batter. 4. Packing Berries in Syrup: Stir together 1 quart cold water and 2 1/2 cups sugar until sugar dissolves. P ack berries in wide-mouth canning jars; cover with syrup , leaving 1/2-inch headspace. Wipe jar rims clean; secure lids. Freeze up to 12 months. Quick Tip: Thaw in fridge and use like fresh berries. R emember to drain and reserve the syrup to use as a topping for desserts or to sweeten and flavor drinks. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. BLUEBERRY SMOOTHIE Makes 2 cups (2 servings)
Smoothies are a delicious way to add healthful fruits to your diet. Frozen fruit, especially frozen bananas, make it possible to create thick, low-fat smoothies. Start with bananas that have brown speckles, as these are sweet and ripe. Peel, then break them into chunks and arrange on a baking sheet or tray to freeze. Once frozen, pack loosely into freezer bags or plastic storage containers. Frozen berries can be purchased in most supermarkets and natural food stores. T o freeze your own, loosely pack clean, dry berries in a freezer bag or plastic storage container. For a thick smoothie that can be eaten with a spoon, use the minimum amount of non-dairy milk necessary for blending. If you like a thinner smoothie, simply add a bit more non-dairy milk. 1 cup frozen banana chunks 1 1/2 cups frozen blueberries 1 tablespoon apple juice concentrate 1/2 - 1 cup soy- or other non-dairy milk Combine all ingredients in a blender . Process until smooth, stopping the blender as needed to push unblended fruit into the blades. Serve immediately. Fruit smoothies are best when consumed immediately . If you have leftovers, keep them in the refrigerator for up to one day or freeze for up to 1 week. Blend the mixture again before consuming. CLEAR THE SHELTERS SATURDAY, JULY 23
The Humane Society of Broward County announced that it has teamed up with NBC 6 South Florida/WTVJ and Telemundo 51 Miami/WSCV to host NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations’ Clear the Shelters second annual nationwide pet adoption drive. The Humane Society of Broward County will be waiving the adoption fee for all pets on Saturday, July 23, as part of the nationwide Clear the Shelters initiative that seeks to find new homes for homeless pets. “We are looking forward to another successful event this year . In 2015 hundreds of people visited the H umane Society of Broward County and adopted their new furry family member. A total of 167 pets were placed and we hope to match that number again ” said Cherie Wachter spokesperson for the HSBC. This year’s Clear the Shelters event comes after last year ’s highly successful inaugural effort, which resulted in nearly 20,000 pets finding new homes through an unprecedented partnership between the NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations and hundreds of animal shelters located all across the country and in Puerto Rico. The nationwide day of action literally emptied dozens of animal shelters across the country and inspired residents in our communities to take action and open their homes to animals in need. It's important to keep up his routine as much as possible: Take him for his walks at the same time as usual and feed him at the same time (unless otherwise directed by the vet).
FINDING A PET SITTER ADULT DOG FORGETS ITS HOUSETRAINING DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My border collie mix , "Rex," was difďŹ cult to housetrain when he was a puppy , but things smoothed out for several years. Now suddenly he's pooping all over the house again. I scold him, he looks ashamed and whines, but then it happens again. H ow do a retrain an old, stubborn dog? — Clark in Kansas City DEAR CLARK: Take Rex straight to the vet. When an adult dog that had no issues with housetraining for several years suddenly develops issues, it's not a problem of stubbornness. Something else is going on. Incontinence is a somewhat common problem in senior dogs, as they develop various physical problems with bladder, kidneys or muscles. In adult dogs that haven't reached their expected senior age, eliminating in the house can signal an infection or other disease. In both cases, pets need to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Working out an appropriate treatment may take additional testing and, depending on R ex's diagnosis, a bit of time to work out the right medications to give, if any . You'll also need to accommodate his problem, hopefully on a temporary basis, by setting up disposable pee pads appropriate to his size in each room he frequents. A side anecdote: When my mother's aging German shepherd became incontinent, she rolled out spare carpet strips wherever he walked or rested. These she could clean or dispose of when he had an accident. Train Rex to use the pads similar to his original housetraining outdoors.
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I love my two Corgis, but my job as a nurse is demanding with long hours, and sometimes I don't get home to see them for over a day . My sister has been great, dropping in to feed and walk them, but her work hours are changing soon. I have to get a pet sitter, but I have no idea where to start. — Sara in Dothan, Alabama
Luxury Real Estate Group #060585
DEAR SARA: Set aside some time and start doing research on pet sitters in your area , as well as reading up on common services they offer . And ask around at work and anywhere else you socialize: Word-of-mouth recommendations are valuable. Pet sitters differ from dog walkers in that they go above and beyond a walk. They spend time in your home with the dogs — from 30 minutes to overnight, if needed. They give them food and water , their daily medication, monitor their well-being and provide any additional services that you agree upon. Some pet sitters offer long-term care in their home or facility if you're away for several days. Questions to ask your potential pet sitter include: How much does the service cost? Is the sitter bonded/insured? How many other pets does he/she sit for? Will the business owner be the sitter or will an employee or contractor do the job? If so , how are they screened and trained? What happens if the sitter can't make it? How does the sitter handle pet emergencies? Y ou can ďŹ nd more extensive lists at Care.com and P et Sitters International.
