• A fruit is the mature ovary of a flower which contains a seed. A vegetable is any part of a plant which is not an ovary, such as a root, tuber, stem, or leaf. That means that tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, melons, peapods, avocado, and peppers are all fruits, not vegetables. If it's got seeds in it, it's a fruit. Even grains such as rice, wheat, and corn are technically fruits. N uts are a fruit, too. It's only our culture that has deemed anything sweet a fruit and anything not sweet a vegetable.

• Many plants surround their seeds with a sweet flesh in order to encourage animals to eat it, thereby spreading the seeds. But plants need to hold onto their roots, leaves, and stems to survive, so there's no reason to make those parts taste especially good.

• Potatoes are the most popular vegetable in the U .S., followed by tomatoes (actually a fruit; see next page) and iceberg lettuce. • Most Americans eat one or two serving of fruits and veggies per day, whereas the recommended amount is five to six per day.

TOMATOES AND TAXES • As the ripened ovary of a seed plant, the tomato is technically a fruit. The Tariff Act of 1883 levied a 10% tax on vegetables being imported while fruits entered the country duty-free.

(continued):

The Port Authority of N ew York classified tomatoes as vegetables which should be taxed, while a fruit importer argued that tomatoes were fruits, which were not taxed. The case went all the way to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court declared that although tomatoes are botanically a fruit, they are more commonly used as a vegetable and should be considered a vegetable by law. The tax remained.

• Ripe red bell peppers contain twice as much vitamin C by weight as citrus fruits. • A single tomato plant was once documented to have produced 16,897 tomatoes. • The original eggplant had a small white fruit that looked like an egg. The large purple eggplants are in the same family and bear the same name. • The average American eats about 126 lbs. (57 kg) of potatoes annually.

• It’s true that a vitamin A deficiency can cause blindness and that carrots contain vitamin A . But eating carrots won’t even begin to affect your eyesight unless your eyesight is bad specifically because of a vitamin A deficiency. Actually, carrots don’t exactly contain vitamin A; they contain carotene, which the liver converts to vitamin A . By the way: Carotene is the chemical which makes carrots orange. If you ingest enough carotene, it will turn your skin a yellow-orange color . Are baby carrots really babies? N o, they are really just a thin-stalked variety that is then cut into baby shapes. The first carrots that were grown, native to Afghanistan, were purple in color . Orange carrots later originated in Holland.

• Romaine lettuce has more nutrients than any other kind of lettuce. The darker the leaf, the more nutritious the lettuce. • Coconut is actually a fruit. • Before the days of refrigerated trucks, loads of lettuce would be heaped with mounds of ice to preserve them while being shipped, hence the name “iceberg ” lettuce. • Sweet potatoes have more vitamin A than any other vegetable. The cantaloupe is higher in vitamin A than any other fruit.

SPINACH MYTH • In the 1930s a scientist studying the mineral properties of spinach accidentally misplaced a decimal point, leading researchers to believe that there was ten times as much iron in spinach as there actually is. The myth that spinach is extraordinarily high in iron still survives. Spinach has iron, but many foods, including soy beans, peas, beets, lima beans, lentils, liver , molasses, oysters, apricots, walnuts, and sunflower seeds have more. In order to get your requirement of iron from spinach alone, you'd have to eat twice your body weight of the stuff yearly. This would be a bad idea because spinach also contains o xalic acid, and ingesting that much oxalic acid could cause kidney stones. Boiling spin-ach will reduce the level of o xalic acid. Still, when Popeye started eating spinach, sales soared.

Unusual animals:

HORSES • A horse can sleep either laying down a race. Today we bother other people when we “get their goat.” or standing up. • H orses have larger eyes than any other land mammal. Because the eyes are located on the sides of their heads, they can see in nearly a full circle. • Horses can gallop at about 27 mph (44 kph) but the fastest recorded horse sprinted at 55 mph (88 kph). • A horse cannot vomit. • The teeth of a horse show the animal’ s age. When the owner of a horse for sale says it’s a young animal, the buyer is wise to inspect the teeth in order to get that information “ straight from the horse’s mouth.” • When horses are “rough-shod” they have shoes which have the ends of the nails sticking out. This gives the horse more traction, but it tears up the ground the animal travels over. When someone “rides roughshod” over another person, they are trampling the ground beneath them without caring. • When a jockey is so far ahead of the rest of the horses in a race that he doesn’t even have to lift the reins anymore, he rises from his crouch over the horse’s withers and puts his hand on the pommel of the saddle, thereby winning the race “hands down.” • Nervous race horses are sometimes given goats as companions in their stalls, which helps calm them down. Gamblers sometimes steal the goat of a horse that they want to do badly in

• When early day pioneers reached the P alouse River in I daho, they found the Indians there riding a particular type of spotted horse. They called them “Palousez” horses, which are now known as Appaloosa. • Edward Smith Stanley , 12th Earl of Derby, was friends with Sir Charles Bunbury. Both fellows enjoyed breeding horses. T ogether the two gentlemen founded a new horse race- a one mile springtime test of 3-year-old Thoroughbreds. However, before the first race could be held, it needed to be named. Which founder should the race be named after? There was only one way to settle the dispute. They flipped a coin, and that is why every spring we enjoy a derby instead of a bunbury. As consolation, Bunbury's horse won the first derby. • The famous racehorse Man o' W ar was the first animal whose obituary and biography appeared in the list of celebrities compiled by major press associations. • Moifaa was a well-known racehorse in the early part of this century . In 1904 the ship that was bringing him from N ew Zealand to England was sunk in a storm. M oifaa nearly drowned, but washed up still alive on an island. H e wandered around the island for two weeks before he was rescued. He was sent to England and entered in the Grand N ational Steeplechase against 25 other horses. He won.

HOLLYWOOD — Universal Pictures is determined to re-launch its monster series, which it started in 2010 with the remake of the classic Lon Chaney, Jr. film, "The Wolfman," with Benicio Del Toro (2000 Oscar winner for "Traffic"). The film cost $150 million but only returned $140 million at the bo x office. N ow Universal plans to remake "Frankenstein," with 2007 Oscar-winner J avier Bardem (for "No Country for Old Men"). If the reboot is a success, it plans to remake "The Bride of Frankenstein" as a follow-up. Bardem met P enelope Cruz while they were filming Woody Allen's "Vicky Christina Barcelona" (for which she won an Oscar), and they were married in 2010. He starred in "Skyfall" (2012) and is upcoming in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead M en Tell No Tales" (May 26 release) and has just completed the sci-fi thriller "Day 6," with J ennifer Lawrence, Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed H arris. No word yet if Bardem will be Dr . Frankenstein or his monster . Our guess is he'll play Dr . Frankenstein, but then Aaron Eckhart, no slouch in the acting department, played the monster in "I, Frankenstein" in 2014.

In too many senior patients, going under general anesthesia for surgery can leave a lingering problem with impaired concentration or memory . It's called post-operative cognitive dysfunction, and in some cases, the effects might be permanent. The potential damage can depend on the degree of anesthesia. Add that to the trauma of the surgery itself, and there can be damage to the central nervous system. A study done in Brazil might have an answer to this growing problem: a drug called dexamethasone, an anti-inflammatory. If given before an operation, the drug can help avoid problems while under anesthesia. For this study , researchers looked at 140 patients (ages 60 to 87) and gave pre-surgery tests to determine their mental status. During surgery itself, the patients were divided into four groups and were given varying levels of anesthesia. Only some of them were given the drug. The testing was double-blind, which means none of the participants or researchers knew who was getting what.

J ust tell your doctor , male or female, that you would like to further discuss prostate and testicular cancer screening.

The bottom line: All participants were tested on Days 3, 7, 21, 90 and 180 after surgery , with their cognitive and mental skills compared to their pre-surgery levels. The group that had superficial anesthesia plus the drug had 15.3 percent post-operative cognitive dysfunction, but within six months all those patients had returned to the pre-surgery testing levels.

READERS: The new booklet on the prostate gland discusses enlargement and cancer . Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr . Roach — N o. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.. If you're scheduled for surgery, have a talk with your doctor and your surgeon about the level of anesthesia you're likely to receive. Deep anesthesia might not be required, and it shouldn't be done routinely . Ask about the dexamethasone, too. Not everyone can take it, but it's worth asking about if it helps preserve cognitive function. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

PROSTATE SCREENING GUIDANCE HAS CHANGED DEAR DR. ROACH: I'm 67 and male. When I had a male doctor, he did a yearly testicle and prostate exam during my physical. N ow the practice has been taken over by female doctors, and for the past three years, this has not been done. Is this new? Is there a correct way to ask why the change? Believe me, this exam is not one I look forward to, but with a family history of prostate cancer and other cancers, the bloodwork I get each year alone does not seem to be enough. — Anon. ANSWER: There has indeed been a change in the way prostate and testicular screening tests have been considered in recent years, and recommendations by advisory groups have changed as well. The current recommendation by the most influential group in the U .S., the Preventive Services T ask Force, is against routine screening for prostate cancer and testicular cancer . However, there are some situations, such as with a strong family history , in which screening for these conditions is appropriate, and it is always appropriate for your doctor to listen to your concerns and preferences. As far as male doctors versus female, most studies have shown that women physicians tend to spend a

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had episodes for many years where I am shocked, like an electric shock, which wakes me from sleep. I jump out of bed, then my legs and feet tremble rapidly , and I need to sit down or I will fall. I have been diagnosed as having "night terrors," but it is not that. I had a normal MRI. It used to happen twice a week, then dwindled to monthly. Lately, I have it pretty much under control. I wonder if there is some diagnosis out there for me. I hope you have an answer. It would make me feel like less of an idiot! — J.N. ANSWER: I don't think you are an idiot at all, and I do think I know the cause of these episodes. You have a pretty severe case of nocturnal myoclonus (which sounds like I know what I am talking about, but it just means muscle jerks at nighttime). These are very common and usually are normal, but are sometimes associated with epilepsy . Since yours aren't getting worse over time and you haven't had seizures, you are almost certain to have the "physiologic" type. Occasionally, there is a family history . I don't think you will need any treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Equestrian skijoring is rather more like water-skiing: A horse with a rider pulls a skier on a towline through a series of jumps and obstacles. Equestrian skijoring was a demonstration sport at the 1928 Winter Olympics in Switzerland.

SUMMER ON THE COB Summer is the time of year when I get what I call "produce overload." There are so many fresh, plump , delicious, vibrant fruits and vegetables available, and so many ways to prepare them! Currently, I'm in love with the flavor infusion that heat and smoke impart to fresh fruits and vegetables prepared on the grill. Corn on the cob is in abundance now, and it's the perfect vegetable to grill. This is the season to indulge in this almost candy-like vegetable that is a favorite of so many . Farm-fresh corn is blatantly delicious in its simplicity, and with every bite we get a chance to re-create and relive a treasured food memory. While we all know how important corn, or maize, was as an early American food, it has taken scientists decades to learn how corn evolved as a domesticated, cultivated grain. They now know that corn, like wheat and rice, has a wild ancestor . Corn is related

to a grass called teosinte. Over many years, but with surprisingly dramatic effects, early farmers began the process of seed selection, saving and planting kernels from plants with desirable characteristics. This was the primitive beginning of hybridization. The early corn of our ancestors was called field corn and was somewhat different from what we grow and eat today. Some field corn was eaten fresh, but most of it was used dried and ground into cornmeal. It also was used as a livestock feed. Today, corn has countless uses, making it one of the most studied, reviewed and important crops of our agricultural economy.

Many people today wonder if corn is even good for us. While it's true that corn is high in sugar and starch, it possesses a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals, like vitamin B-6 and magnesium. It also contains a significant amount of dietary fiber . Add to that the simple pleasure eating a fresh ear of corn. CAN CAT AND PARROTS SURVIVE CAR TRIP? DEAR P AW'S CORNER: I have a cat and two budgies, and I am moving several states away. I plan to drive and bring all three with me. I'm worried that "T iger" will stress out the budgies, though. Can I keep the peace between these pets? -- A Reader, via email DEAR READER: One way, maybe the best way, to travel with pets of different species is to keep them out of sight of one another, and under control. Tiger should be placed in a carrier with a favorite blanket and toys to keep him occupied. The birds should stay in their cage (or if necessary, a smaller travel cage). The change of location and the car's motion could be

DEAR RICH: That's an ex cellent question, and one that all pet owners should consider. About 67 percent of the U.S. population receives municipal drinking water with added fluoride, according to a 2012 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

For the short term, you can simply avoid giving pets tap water every day — use filtered or bottled water instead. But bottled water has its own set of issues (such as plastic filling up landfills).

Opinions on fluoride and its effect on people and pets is an emotional issue, for understandable reasons. And that can leave pet owners even more confused about whether they should be protecting their pets from tap water.

How can you find out if your drinking water has added fluoride? Contact your local water utility provider and ask (the number is on your water and sewer bill). Or, check out the CDC's My Water's Fluoride website, which has fluoridation data supplied by 39 participating states.

The M erck Manual of P et Health details the effects of fluoride at to xic levels (for pets, that can be as low as 1 milligram per kilogram). But that does not address fluoride in water . If municipalities fluoridate their water ,

stressors as well, so minimize their exposure by covering the cage while you're driving. And do not leave your pets alone in the car , even for a few minutes, and even if the weather seems cool. I know I've repeated this advice all summer , but I see incidents several times per week on the news, so many owners still don't realize the danger . The temperature in a hot car can rise very quickly , even with the windows opened a bit. So plan your trip carefully . At each rest stop , take the birds' cage outside and uncover it in a shady area so they can get some fresh air . Take Tiger's carrier out, or if he's a well-behaved cat, put him on a leash (while he's still in the car so he doesn't escape) and let him explore a safe, shady area.
