In this issue we celebrate W orld Water Week, a weeklong global water conference held each year . T idbits wants to share some details about the clear , colorless, odorless liquid we know as water! • Everyone has referred to water as H2O at some point, a reference to its chemical formula. Each water molecule is made up of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Water exists in three different states – liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam or water vapor). It’ s the most common substance on Earth. • About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, about 326 million cubic miles of water . Of that water , 96.5% is salt water found in seas and oceans, and is not fit for consumption. Another 1.7% is in groundwater, another 1.7% in glaciers and ice caps, and a small fraction in other smaller bodies of water . Less than 0.3% of all fresh water is found in rivers, lakes, and in the atmosphere. Less than 1% of fresh water is available for human consumption. Over 90% of the world’ s fresh water is in Antarctica! • Every 2.2 lbs. (1 kg) of sea water contains about 1.2 oz. (35 g) of dissolved salt. The more salt in the water, the lower the freezing point. Sea water with an average level of salt freezes at 28.4 degrees F (-2 degrees C).

• About 65% of the human body is made up of water . The brain is about 70% water , muscles are 75%, blood is 92% water, and bones consist of about 22% water . It’s no wonder that drinking enough water on a daily basis is important! While the body can survive more than a month without food, it can only stay alive about a week without water . M ost recommendations are for eight cups of water per day , however, not all must be in liquid form. Almost all foods contain some percentage of water. • During hot summer months, make sure you are drinking enough water to stay hydrated. While most advice says to drink around eight (8 oz size) glasses of water every day, is good to know that you also can meet that level by eating certain fruits and vegetables. • During hot summer months, make sure you are drinking enough water to stay hydrated. Brit) of water are used to irrigate golf courses. • It takes about 6,800 gallons (5,662 Brit) of water to grow one day’s worth of food for a family of four.

(continued):

• We should drink water even when we’re not thirsty. By the time you feel thirsty , you have lost more than 1% of your body ’s total water amount. The body loses about a cup of water (237 ml) every day by exhaling it. • W ater into xication, known as hyponatremia , occurs when a person drinks too much water too quickly. This is the result of the water diluting the bloodstream’s sodium level, causing an imbalance of water in the brain. A person might experience confusion, disorientation, nausea , and vomiting, which can lead to seizures, coma , and even death. About 6.3 qts. (6 liters) can kill a 165-lb. (74.8-kg) person. • Ever wonder why ice floats on water? It’s because frozen water is 9% lighter than water! • T o be considered “ saline” water, it only takes one-thousandth of the weight of water from salt, to be dubbed “salty.” • The U .S. and Canada are the world’ s largest consumers of water . About 346,000 million gallons of fresh water are used across the U .S. every day. How are we using this water? About half of America’s water usage is related to the generation of thermoelectric power. The average home will use over 100,000 gallons (83,267 Brit.) in a year. It takes 70 gallons (58.3 Brit.) just to fill the bathtub . Depending on the shower head, a five-minute shower will use between 15 and 25 gallons (12.3 and 20.8 Brit). The largest use of water in the home is flushing the toilet, with the average use between 80 and 100 gallons (66.6 – 83.3 Brit) per day for this activity . In fact, flushing the toilet just one less time per day could save a lake measuring 1 mile x 1 mile x 4 feet deep . (1.6 km x 1.6 km x 1.2 m) Ju st one less gallon of water per shower every day would save 85 billion gallons (70.7 billion Brit) of water in a year. • It takes over 42,000 gallons (34,972 Brit) of water to fill a 30x50-foot swimming pool. That pool will lose about 1,000 gallons (3,785 liters) a month to natural evaporation. • Every day around the world, 2.5 billion gallons (2.1

• If you think you ’re saving water by washing dishes by hand, consider that this will use seven times more water than using your dishwasher. • Every second, 750,000 gallons (624,505 Brit) of water rushes over Niagara F alls. It takes the average American home about 7 ½ years to use that same amount of water. • About 85% of U .S. residents receive their water from the over 54,000 public water facilities across the country . The average resident might use 175 gallons (145 Brit) per day compared to 5 gallons (4.1 Brit) used by the average African family , who typically walk an average of 3.7 miles (6 km) a day to collect that water. Every day, 200 million hours are used by women collecting water around the world. • About 780 million people across the globe have no access to an improved water source. About 80% of illness in developing countries is water-related, with 3.4 million people perishing each year from water-related causes. Two hundred children die every hour from unsafe water. • Bottled water consumption continues to rise every year , with the average American drinking over 30 gallons (25 Brit) a year . T otal sales ex ceed $13 billion annually, yet out of all the water used each year, bottled water accounts for only 0.01%. • The first water pipes were made from fire-charred bored-out logs. T oday, there are about one million miles (1,609,344 km) of water pipes and aqueducts in the U .S. and Canada, enough to circle the globe 40 times. • Because the Earth ’s water is being constantly recycled, you might take a drink of water today that existed during the era of the dinosaurs. • If you have “hard water ” in your area , this refers to a higher amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water . This doesn ’t present a health issue, but hard water does contribute to a mineral buildup in your plumbing fixtures and water heater, along with causing poor performance of soaps and detergents.

Unusual animals:

KOALAS September is Save the K oala Month, an effort to protect these unusual animals. Here’s what you need to know about these cuddly marsupials of Australia. • Although most of us refer to these animals as koala bears, they are not bears at all, but rather marsupials, or pouched mammals like kangaroos and wombats. Since their appearance is “bear-like,” they are frequently called bears in error. • Another misconception about koalas is that they live in rainforests. s. They only live in eucalyptus s forests in eastern Australianan as well as some of that counntry’s islands. Although there ere are about 600 different species ies of eucalyptus trees, the koalas las only choose about 12 of thosese for their habitat and food, prereferring those that are at least 30 30 0 feet (9.1 m) tall. They rarely leave the trees, sleeping for almost 20 hours a day , with their sharp claws gripping the tree. Their metabolic rate is half that of most mammals. Koalas don’t have much of a social life, spending only about 15 minutes a day in any type of social interaction. • Koalas are herbivores, subsisting only on the eucalyptus leaves. The fibrous, low-nutrition leaves require most of the koala’s energy to digest. These leaves are extremely poisonous to most animals; however the koala’s special digestive system allows them to remain unharmed by the to xins. A typical koala might eat 2 ½ lbs. (1.1 kg) of leaves a day, which causes them to reek of the aroma of eucalyptus oil. There is so much moisture in the leaves that a koala rarely needs to drink water , leading the indigenous tribes to name them boorabees, burrenbong, koolawong, bangaroo, and banjo-

rah, words that translate in Aboriginal languages to “no drink.” • A baby koala about the size of a jelly bean at birth, blind and furless, and is moved into the mother ’s pouch shortly afterward where it will remain for six or seven months to continue its development. After it emerges from the pouch, the joey rides on its mother ’s back for another six months or so. The young koala isn’t fully weaned until it’s a year old. • The koala will grow to a height of 23.5 tto 33.5 inches (60 to 85 cm) and weigh about 20 lbs. (9 kg) Those in southern Australia grow bigger and south have thicker fur than their counhav terparts in the north. Their te brain is very small, 60% smaller than other marsupials, weighing just 0.68 oz. (19.2 g). • A male koala has a scent gland in the middle of his chest that secretes a dark sticky substance. Whenever he enters a new tree, he “marks his territory” by rubbing his chest against the tree’s trunk or branches. • The life expectancy of a koala in the wild is about 20 years. They have very few natural predators, only dingos and large pythons, plus owls and eagles that prey on their young. The number of koalas is decreasing because of the destruction of their natural habitat, as Australia’s industrial and urban development swallows up the eucalyptus forests. A single koala needs about 100 trees to stay alive. Many koalas die from collisions with vehicles and from attacks by large domestic dogs, about 4,000 a year . In the wild, a koala dies from starvation, as its teeth begin to wear down and they are unable to chew enough to feed themselves properly.

HOLLYWOOD — T om Cruise, who has "J ack R eacher: Never Go Back" opening Oct. 21 and will show us his "Mummy" next year on June 9, has changed the name of his next film, "M ena," to "American Made." Cruise plays a TWA pilot recruited by the CIA to counter emerging communist threats in Central America , which embarrassed the R eagan White H ouse when the Iran-Contra scandal became public. It was slated for a J anuary release, but has been moved to Sept. 17, 2017. "Mary Poppins Returns" probably will have the original Mary, Julie Andrews, and Dick V an Dyke in the sequel. Plans are to integrate them with Emily Blunt, the new Mary Poppins, and Lin Manuel-Miranda (from the mega-hit musical "H amilton"). Rob Marshall will direct, as he did in 2002 with the $307 million earner "Chicago" (13 Oscar nomination and six wins, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-J ones) and 2014's "Into the W oods" (three Oscar nominations, no wins), which made $213 million. "Mary P oppins Returns" debuts on Dec. 25, 2018. *** Tom Hanks, who has "Sully" (directed byClint Eastwood) due Sept. 9, and "Inferno," the "Da Vinci Code" fourquel, on Oct. 28. H e's currently producing and acting in the sci-fi film "The Circle," with Emma Watson, John Boyega and Bill P axton, while also producing "F elt" with Liam Neeson, Diane Lane and Tony Goldwyn. Don't believe what you see in those tabloid headlines at the supermarket. They say H anks and wife Rita Wilson are headed for divorce, but they're very much together , as is Tom Selleck and his wife, Jillie Mack. The headline read, "Tom Selleck's heartbreaking divorce." I turned to the two-page centerfold to find it was about his divorce from his first wife, Jacqueline Ray, whom he married in

1971. I took pictures at their wedding, and T om adopted her son K evin as his own. The tabloid further claimed that Tom abandoned her when he moved to H awaii to shoot "Magnum P.I.," which also is untrue. They were separated long before that and parted on the best of terms, raising Kevin together. *** A judge has dismissed a $20 million slander lawsuit against Christian Slater, currently starring in season two of "Mr. Robot." Christian was sued by his father, Thomas Knight Slater, for "slander, libel, defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, intentional interference with prospective economic advantage and invasion of privacy." (Christian had told an interviewer his father was suffering from schizophrenia). I knew his father , who acted under the name Michael Hawkins in the soap "Ryan's H ope." In fact, I took pictures at Christian's 6th birthday party, and his father arranged for William Shatner to stop by because Christian was a big "Star T rek" fan. I must admit when I met up with Michael years later in Hollywood, he seemed a little strange. They do say you're never alone when you're a schizophrenic. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tom Hiddleston

A: "Kong: Skull Island" will premiere March 10, 2017 on the big screen. This latest version of the action-adventure movie stars Tom Hiddleston (of "Thor" and "The Avengers" fame), Brie Larson (who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for "R oom"), Samuel L. J ackson and Tom Wilkinson, and takes place in the 1970s, focusing on the origins of Kong. Hiddleston's character, Capt. James Conrad, is the leader of an expedition venturing deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific Ocean, where you can bet they are going to run smack into everyone's favorite giant gorilla.

between "Whatever H appened to Baby J ane?" stars Bette Davis (Susan Sarandon) and J oan Crawford (J essica Lange). The miniseries will premiere sometime next year, and co-stars Stanley Tucci as studio chief Jack Warner, Judy Davis as gossip columnist H edda Hopper and Alfred Molina as director/producer Robert Aldrich. With a powerhouse cast like this, I can't wait to see the series.

But if you can't wait until March to get up close and personal with the mythical beast, you can head over to Skull Island yourself — that is, the one at Universal Studios Orlando Islands of Adventure. Its new ride, "Skull Island: R eign of K ong," opened over the summer , and let me tell you that it is exhilarating and actually quite scary. It really does get you primed to want to see the movie. Here's an insider's tip: T ry to sit as far on righthand side of the car as you can.

A: Rob Thomas — creator of "Veronica Mars" and "iZombie" — is bringing the vampire cult classic to television over at the CW network. According to "Deadline," the new series is being envisioned for a seven-season run, "spanning 70 years, each season chronicling a decade." With each season, "the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who are like the 'P eter Pan' characters who never grow up, remain the same." There is no word yet on whether the vampires will be all-new characters or a reimaging of the movie-version ones, but seeing how they all died in the end, they'd have to get pretty creative if they are planning to reintroduce them.

*** Q: I haven't seen Catherine Zeta-J ones in anything recently. I know she took time off while her husband, Michael Douglas, was recovering from cancer , but did she full-on retire? — Linda F., Baton Rouge, Louisiana A: The gorgeous and talented Oscar winner recently signed on to star as Olivia de Havilland in FX's eight-part miniseries "F eud," which centers on the bitter rivalry

*** Q: I remember hearing talk of a "Lost Boys" movie remake. Any word on that? — Larry T., via email

"WHAT'S THAT SOUND?" GAME Encourage an older child to listen with a younger sibling to the everyday sounds of their lives. Go on a sound safari in your home and neighborhood, and help your older child record sounds one by one. For example, record the neighbor's barking dog, a jet flying overhead, the newspaper landing on the front porch, your garage door squeaking as it opens and closes, birds singing, ducks quacking at a park. Keep a list as you record.

THE SOUNDS OF FUN Kids are born collectors. If you've already observed their inclination to hoard sticks, rocks and shells, they'll no doubt have fun collecting the sounds around them, too . H ere are some clever ways your school-age kids can make sound productions and recordings with you using the voice memo or voice recorder apps on your smartphone.

When you get home, play the recordings back to the family , pausing between the sounds. Try to guess them. Preschoolers will enjoy familiar indoor sounds, too, which are generally easier to identify, such as the doorbell ringing, a microwave oven beeping, the toilet flushing, etc.

LAUGH OUT LOUD Record voices of family and friends laughing. T ry to record each person separately . Enjoy more laughs when you play back the recordings and try to identify the laughs. (This is a great activity at a summer family reunion and at a birthday or sleepover party.)

PLAY IT AGAIN If your child is practicing a musical instrument and the lesson calls for learning both parts to a duet, record one part. Play it back as your child plays the second part "live." For a memorable production, have someone play and record a piece on the piano , then accompany it with a trumpet, flute, drums, etc.

SING ALONG Record your preschooler singing favorite songs with you or with siblings. It's fun to recite rhymes and madeup jingles, too. Include in your repertoire recitations of your address, extended family names and other everyday information you want your child to memorize. Play it back in the car or during indoor playtime to reinforce the information. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. WHAT'S THE BEST AGE FOR SHINGLES VACCINE? DEAR DR . RO ACH: You have written many times about chickenpox, shingles and the shingles vaccine. M y question concerns the age at which one should get the vaccine. Most doctors and other sources recommend 60 and above; however, I am concerned about more and more younger people getting shingles, in their 50s and, in one instance, a woman in her 30s. Are these isolated cases? I am a 48-year-old female, and I did have chickenpo x as a child. My husband's insurance will pay for the vaccine at 50, and I intend to get it then. What are your thoughts? — L.A.B. ANSWER: The vaccine is indicated by the F ood and Drug Administration for those ages 50 and up , but advisory groups have recommended the vaccine to people over age 60, since the complication of post-herpetic neuralgia is more likely , lasts longer and can be more severe the older you get. It is reasonable to get the vaccine at 50 if you want, but it's important to get it at age 60 or over if you haven't already had it. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: A 95-year-old does not get enough blood flow to her lungs because she has a leaky heart valve. She is chronically short of breath after a small amount of exertion. Her leg strength is low , and she has to use a walker to safely get around. She lived with a smoker for a few decades, and he died decades ago, but she never smoked herself. Would supplemental oxygen help, by enriching the air in her lungs, thus allowing blood to get more o xygen from the lungs? — Anon.

ANSWER: Supplemental o xygen can improve symptoms and make people live longer in a few specific instances. The most prevalent is probably people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) whose blood oxygen level is below 89 percent. Some other lung diseases also benefit from oxygen. In cases of poor blood flow due to heart reasons, including valvular disease, o xygen doesn't help.

I have been avoiding the very effective biological drugs because of the scary possible side effects. Instead, I use anti-itch topical creams and lotions, some with cortisone. In researching the topic, I ran across a treatment called Fumaderm that is available inGermany, but I have never heard of it being used in the U.S. — C.S. ANSWER: P soriasis is an inflammatory skin condition that can range from annoying to life-threatening in severity. Psoriasis and its common complication, psoriatic arthritis, together are a highly destructive arthritis that often requires powerful treatment: biologic agents, like adalimumab (Humira) or etanercept (Enbrel). These do have the possibility of serious side effects, such as reactivation of tuberculosis.

As far as discontinuing seizure medicine, really , only your neurologist can answer that. It depends on your seizure history, and the results of your EEG and possibly your brain MRI. Most neurologists will consider stopping the medication after one or more years with no seizures, in most cases. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? — T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer . Breastfeeding is one, and it's so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother's breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally , regular physical ex ercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause.

Fumaderm has been used in Germany for 19 years with a generally good safety record. There have been reports of a disease, PML, caused by brain virus, associated with FuOther dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and maderm, although it isn't clear whether the Fumaderm vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may repredisposed the individuals to develop this infection. duce risk of breast cancer, but this isn't proven. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

* In February, a mattress company conducted a survey of 390 Americans (hardly a comprehensive sample, of course) to determine consumers' attitudes toward sleep around V alentine's Day. Interestingly, fully half of the respondents said that they'd rather have a good night's sleep than be the recipient of a romantic gesture on what is generally regarded as the most romantic day of the year. And 64 percent said they cared more about getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night than they did about finding a life partner. * Those who study such things say that when male and female puppies play fight, the males will sometimes let the females win in order to get to know them better. * It was 19th-century French poet Charles Baudelaire who made the following sage observation: "What's irritating about love is it's a crime that requires an accomplice."

* Railroads in Japan have a persistent problem: turtles. It seems the reptiles have a habit of wandering onto the tracks, and many of them get stuck between the switching rails. This prevents the switches from closing properly , causing train accidents. want name calling? Just how many kids are going to be named Simone after these Olympics? Yep, America won the eagle's share of the gold, and pretty much lapped the competition. F or Russia, this was a particularly humiliating Olympics. It's one thing to implement state-sponsored cheating, it's an entire other thing to get completely nailed for it, too.

THE SIMPLE OLYMPICS If there was one consistent takeaway for America from these past Olympics it is that: 1) we have the best athletes (and sport outďŹ tters) in the world, and 2) yeah, we're more than just a little bit insane. I know where you think I'm going with this ... that I'm going to bring up the Ryan Lochte "situation." I am, of course, but only for a brief moment. Ryan Lochte is a dunce. Now, before you say it's not nice to name call, let me also call out Usain Bolt. He is great. Also let me state that Michael Phelps is a freak of nature and broke records that had stood since ancient Greece. Carmelo Anthony has won three gold medals, and Coach K has lost only one game ever in Olympic play. That's incredible. Y ou

The Olympics are actually great places to call names. Everyone knows that there is a tradition at the end of the games to proclaim them as "the best ever ," even if it didn't happen in Atlanta or Rio , I think. In Atlanta , we received an "attaboy" sentiment, and I believe Rio was simply told they were "magniďŹ cent." Whether or not that was a good thing is for Rio to ďŹ gure out. One thing we have ďŹ gured out is the art of storytelling. Every Olympics, the pre-match bios get more and more "Million Dollar Baby." Just once I would like the story of an Olympian to be boring and with no compelling backstory at all. It would really be something to see ab-roll of some kid who simply grew up in Middletown, Wherever, and carried a C or B average through high school, but one day found out he was really fast ... or a really good shot ... and by accident, he tried out for the games and came in seventh. We never hear those stories. Of course, it also wouldn't hurt if the press would stop with all the "displaced resident" stories. Look, we get it ... the powers that be aren't going to bulldoze the mansions owned by the richest people in the ritziest part of the city to build a stadium that will be useless in two weeks' time. Is anyone shocked to learn of this? Every year, the reporters write about government spending on infrastructure, how pollution is atrocious, how every-

one that dips a toe in the water will contract syphilis, and come dusk, will be eaten alive by head-shrinking mosquitos. Sometimes you just have to let the simple ideas win out. We were watching people, athletes, run and jump and play games for their country , and that simple thrill should be enough for us all. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in N ew Jersey. ARE YOU GETTING ALL YOUR BENEFITS? You might be eligible for benefits you don't even know about. The N ational Council on Aging has a website that identifies benefits such as getting help paying for prescription medicine, utilities, winterizing, food, health care, transportation and much more. Go online to BenefitsCheckUp .org and complete its questionnaire. There are two ways to do this: If you click Can I Get H elp?, you'll be asked four simple questions — your ZIP code, monthly income, month and year of birth and what kind of assistance you're looking for. Start with this short questionnaire and see if the results get you the information you need. If not, go to the more-comprehensive questionnaire. For the full benefits checkup , click on Find H elp. The questions are much more detailed and a bit intrusive, including questions about whether you're a veteran, what kind of assistance you already receive, what medical conditions you have, what assets you have and more. However, if you need a full range of help, this questionnaire might be your best bet. The results you get will consist of links to other sites that can answer your questions. F or example, if you want to know about home delivery of meals, you'll be directed to your local food-distribution source, perhaps an organization that creates and delivers meals. If you need help paying utilities or having your home winterized, the links will take you to the right places to get that information. If you need help paying property taxes, you'll be directed to your state's homeowner assistance site. The top of the BenefitsCheckUp website says they've helped over 5 million people find $17 billion worth

IT'S EASIER TO FIND A GOOD NURSING HOME Medicare's Nursing Home Compare website now has the long-awaited star ratings. Announced months ago, the site has added six more quality measurements and has added the star features, making it easier to do comparisons when the time comes to pick out a nursing home. To find the nursing home ratings, go online to www . medicare.gov and put "nursing home compare" in the search box. Put in your ZIP code, and you can compare up to three at a time. The devil is in the details, as always. Look for tiny items like the number of minutes of physical therapy per resident per day , dates of last inspections, residents rights deficiencies, any mistreatment complaints, pharmacy service deficiencies and any penalties and fines in the past three years. Be sure to click and read the actual inspection reports. You might find that cleaning materials and foods were comingled, or that food was left uncovered in the freezer. What's concerning is that not all the inspection reports are there. Y ou'll need to know if a facility has eight fire-code deficiencies, or that the ceiling over the food-prep area has peeling paint, or that insulin wasn't kept at the correct cold temperature or had expired. One thing lacking in the ratings is that nowhere will you find resident or family satisfaction. The data is mostly self-reported by the nursing homes themselves and the measures aren't necessarily comparable between facilities, especially the ratings that don't include full inspection reports. While the star rating is a good place to begin, it shouldn't be the end of your research into a good nursing home. Ask for recommendations from your doctor or people you know. Campaigns to raise minimum wages to somewhat higher thanslave pay have had some successes, as has a push to force companies to at least show the grotesque difference between the compensation paid to top executives and the average employee. In both cases, the "haves" are putting up a ferocious fight, threatening to cut jobs to maintain their caste system or even to relocate to some other country.

THE FORMER LABOR DAY Can we stop with the platitudes about celebrating the workers and face the reality of America? F or starters, let's do something about the name of this three-day weekend. Instead of Labor Day, let's call it Plutocrat Day or maybe Oligarch Day. Let's face it, fellow beachgoers, what we're celebrating these days is fantasy. No longer can we expect that hard work will pay off, that those who profit from it will share their rewards with those who put their noses to the grindstone for them. Instead, they'll take away the grindstone when they merge their company with another and, in the name of "efficiency," lay off by the thousands the people who made their corporation such a valuable commodity.

It's not only the middle class that's disappearing. One of the fundamental premises of our nation has always been the expectation that a family's succeeding generation would do better . That upward mobility also has become a myth. Studies show that nearly three-quarters of those in the lowest class, the nation's poor, will never achieve middle class. As for those in the middle, only 10 percent will move up to prosperity. All of this is related. And it snuffs out the pretense of an American Dream. Our politicians, who might pass laws to make everyone contribute a fairer share, have been bought and paid for by the wealthy special interests who don't want fairness. They've got it too good with unfairness. The great bulk of us who could elect more responsive leaders have this bad habit of voting against our self-interest. In large part, it is because the wealthy provide the wherewithal for propaganda campaigns to confuse us.

They encourage us to mindlessly focus on emotional issues and trivialities instead of the economic policies Labor movement? It's moving, all right. Backward. Please Support Our Advertisers for each day . They must live in the woods behind my house. I ve tried to lure them inside so I can take them to the vet to get spayed or neutered, but they re too wary for that. Ultimately I d like to take them in as pets. Is that realistic? — Gary in Tampa, Florida DEAR GARY: Taming a feral cat — and these two appear to be feral from your description — is really unlikely. The fact that they come around for food at the same time every day is pretty good, but I don t think you ll ever get them to the point where they will be relaxed, indoor cats.

DOES DOG STINK ... OR NOT? DEAR P AW'S CORNER: After we played with my dog "J erry" in the backyard, a friend who was visiting told me that he stank. She said dogs should get baths every week. I don't think J erry smells bad, just sweaty , and my mom doesn't give him a bath very often. Is what my friend said true? — Sara in Madison, Wisconsin DEAR SARA: What one person thinks is a bad smell, doesn't smell like anything to another person. This often can be true with dog owners, who are a little more accustomed to how their pet smells. This can be especially noticeable to visitors (and even owners) after a dog has been out romping in warm weather, or in the rain. Dogs don't have a lot of sweat glands, but their undercoat and fur retain oils, dirt and other things, creating a some-

However, getting them spayed or neutered is a good idea. So how do you manage to do that when they won t come inside?

what distinctive funk. Does that mean your dog needs frequent baths? N ot really . Too many baths can dry out their skin, leading to irritation and potentially infections that can make your dog really stink — and be utterly uncomfortable. After playing in the yard, you can rub J erry's coat with a spare towel to knock off ex cess dirt. Check him over for burrs and ticks, and look at the bottom of his paws to make sure nothing is trapped between the pads. Then let him relax and cool off. Jerry should get a bath — using lukewarm water and non-perfumed pet shampoo only — a couple of times a month, or whenever his coat gets too muddy to easily rub off.

CARING FOR STRAY CATS

First, you can contact the local shelter or a veterinarian to find out if this is feasible. F or example, a university study in central Florida lasting several years looked at the local feral cat population, as well as the effects of a trap-and-release program in which cats were spayed or neutered and released back into their roaming territory. A similar program could be available in your area , although you may need to trap the cats yourself (by luring them into a live trap with food, for example) and bring them in for treatment. Bringing feral cats into a household with tame housecats can be a recipe for disaster . Territorial spats, potential diseases and other problems could quickly arise. For now, feeding these cats and trying to get them medical care to keep the feral cat population from growing is a good thing to do. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com.
