TIDBITS® TAKES A TRIP TO
SESAME STREET America’s favorite children’s program premiered on PBS on November 10, 1969. In observance of Sesame Street Day, Tidbits passes along the facts on this long-running series, now in its 46th season.
• After just one season, the Educational Testing Service reported that children who regularly watched Sesame Street scored higher on tests than occasional viewers. Ten years after its premiere, 9 million American children under the age of six were watching the program every day, including 90% of children in low-income, inner-city homes.

• A dinner party at the home of television documentary producer Joan Ganz Cooney in 1966 got the ball rolling toward a new children’s educational program. She and her guests discussed statistics showing that the average preschool child was watching 27 hours of television a week, much of which was considered too violent. Cooney conceived the idea of helping these preschoolers prepare for the classroom, teaching them the alphabet and how to count in an entertaining way. In addition, the program taught basic life skills, such as proper hygiene, healthy eating habits, self-control, dealing with low self-esteem, and crossing the street safely. Cross-cultural friendships were prominent, as well as roles for the disabled, the young, senior citizens, and actors of all ethnicities, all demonstrating “peace and harmony.”
• Jim Henson was an artist, cartoonist, inventor, screenwriter, composer, musician, director, and producer as well. He signed on from the inception and spent the next 20 years with the series, until his sudden death at age 53 from streptococcal toxic shock syndrome.

• Joan Cooney hired puppeteer Jim Henson to create the cast of Sesame Street characters. Henson, who had founded Muppets, Inc. in 1958 at the age of 22, was more than a puppeteer.

SESAME STREET (continued):
• Trash can dweller Oscar the Grouch was yellow, then orange during the first season, but was changed to his present green for Series Two. The explanation was that Oscar went on a holiday to “the very damp Swamp Mushy Muddy,â€? and came back permanently green. Oscar’s signature song is “I Love Trash.â€? His home is much larger on the inside that a typical trash can, and contains such luxuries as a swimming pool, ice rink, bowling alley, and piano beneath the surface. Oscar is performed by the same man behind Big Bird, Caroll Spinney, who says he got the idea for Oscar’s gruff voice from a Manhattan taxi driver who growled, “Where to, Mac?â€? • Caroll Spinney, 81, has been the puppeteer for Big Bird since Sesame Street’s inception. He stands inside the 8’2â€? (249 cm) bright yellow bird and extends his right arm above his head, with his arm acting as the neck, and his right hand as the beak. Spinney’s left hand is Big Bird’s left wing, which is attached to the right wing by a fishing line so that both wing’s move. Since he can’t see out, a tiny TV set is strapped to his chest. The suit weighs 10 lbs. (4.5 kg) , with the head weighing an additional 4 lbs. (1.8 kg). • What kind of a bird is Big Bird? One book about the series calls him a canary, although on an episode of Sesame Street, Big Bird himself said, “I’m more of a condor.â€? When appearing in the game show Hollywood Squares, the Bird called himself a lark, but a special 1983 broadcast of Sesame Street calls him an ibis. Whatever he is, he’s always flightless! • Bert and Ernie were designed to illustrate that two to-

tally different characters can still be good friends. They were originally performed by Jim Henson and writer Jon Stone, with Bert and Ernie’s friendship symbolic of the true-life friendship between the two performers. • The Count, a vampire based on Count Dracula, was introduced in Season 4, and was intended to teach mathematical principles to children. He loves counting and counts everything! His favorite number is 34,969, which he calls a “square-root thing,â€? since that number is 187 squared.
The Tickle-Me-Elmo doll was a source of hundreds of millions of dollars for Sesame Workshop to help purchase the rights for the other Muppets.
• One of the best-known songs from the series is “C is for Cookie,â€? first aired in 1972, and sung by the big, blue, growly-voiced Cookie Monster. Other favorites are Kermit the Frog’s “Bein’ Greenâ€? and Ernie’s “Rubber Duckie,â€? which enjoyed a stint on the Billboard Top 100 pop chart in 1970. • Sesame Street wasn’t Kermit the Frog’s first gig. The famous green puppet made his debut in 1955 on Jim Henson’s local television series Sam and Friends, which aired until 1961. Kermit is the only Muppet with a prominent role on both The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Henson was Kermit’s puppeteer from 1955 until his death in 1990. Upon Henson’s death, the Sesame Workshop bought full ownership of Henson’s characters for $180 million; however, Kermit wasn’t part of the deal.
• A favorite human character on the series was the Fix-It Shop’s co-owner, Maria. Maria was played by Sonia Manzano, who joined the cast in 1971 at age 20 and remained until she retired in 2015. In addition to being nominated for two Emmy Awards for her performances, she won 15 Emmy’s as a Sesame Street writer. Other beloved humans have included Bob the music teacher, Linda the librarian (the first regular deaf character on television), schoolteacher Gordon, nurse Susan, and candy store owner Mr. Hooper. When Will Lee, the actor who played Mr. Hooper, passed away in 1982, rather than cast a new actor in the role, the producers used the opportunity to help young viewers understand death. • There have been more than 4,500 episodes of Sesame Street, and the series has won 116 Emmy Awards, more than any other program. It has been televised in more than 120 countries. About 8 million viewers tune in each week in the United States alone.

HUMMINGBIRDS This week, Tidbits is just humming along, taking a look at our tiny feathered friend, the hummingbird. • There are about 340 identified species of hummingbirds in the world, the second largest bird family. Yet they can only be found in the western hemisphere. Ecuador has the most hummingbirds of any country. Mexico is home to 50 different species, but only eight species are found in the U.S. They are not just found in warm climates -- three species are found in Canada, and certain types are even found in Alaska. • A ruby-throated hummingbird weighs about 3 grams. Compare this to the weight of a nickel at 4.5 grams. That’s about 150 birds to make one pound (0.45 kg)! The smallest bird in the world, the bee hummingbird, is about 2 inches (5 cm) long and weighs about 2.5 grams, about the same as a penny. Even the largest species, the giant hummingbird, is only 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long. Yet their tiny size doesn’t affect their attitude. They are one of the most aggressive bird species, and will attack jays, crows, and hawks that intrude in their territory. • These tiny creatures can flap their wings as many as 200 times per second! They can fly at speeds up to 30 mph (48.2 km/h), and when diving, can reach double that speed. They are the only bird that can fly backwards. However, for all these amazing feats, the hummingbird can’t walk. Their pectoral chest muscles are so strong, they make up almost 30% of the bird’s body weight. • In order to collect nectar, hummingbirds do not suck the nectar through their long bills. Rather, they lick it at the rate of 10 to 15 times per second with forked tongues.
• The bird’s heart beats around 1,260 times per minute, and even at rest, its breathing rate is 250 breaths per minute. In order to support this incredibly high metabolism, the bird needs to eat up to eight times per hour. Each feeding session lasts less than a minute. The hummingbird will visit about 1,000 flowers per day to gather the sug sugary sweet nectar needed for their ener energy. But because the nec nectar is not a good source of other nutrients, the birds also dine on insects and spiders. • At night, when food is not readily available, humming hummingbirds enter a deep-sleep state similar to hibernation known as torpor. Their metabolism, heart, and breathing rates all dramatically slow down to preserve their energy levels. The heart, which normally beats during the daytime upwards of 1,200 times per minute, slows down to no more than 180 beats. • Hummingbirds have stunning colorful plumage, with about 1,000 to 1,500 feathers. Surprisingly, this is the least amount of feathers of any type of bird. The lower amount of feathers keeps them lightweight for their fast flight. • Most North American hummingbirds migrate south every autumn to spend the winter in Mexico, the Caribbean, or Central America. The 3-inch-long (7.6cm) rufous hummingbird travels 3,900 miles (6,276 km) one way from Alaska to Mexico. • The lifespan of a hummingbird ranges from 5 to 12 years. • If you want hummingbirds to visit your garden, plant a collection of bright flowers that continuously bloom, including zinnias, bleeding hearts, lupine, columbine, petunias, and beebalm. You can also add a feeder containing a mixture that is one part sugar to four parts water.

HOLLYWOOD -- The continuation of the 1995 family adventure film "Jumanji" (with Robin Williams and Kirsten Dunst) will star Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Nick Jonas and Karen Gillan (of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and the sequel, "Volume 2," due in 2017). It follows four teens sucked into the board game, which gives them new "avatar" forms to locate a jewel. It's due July 28.

"Mamaboy," the film about Kelly, 18 and pregnant, and ... a boy, had its premiere last month where it was shot, in Sacramento, California, for the cast and the high-school extras featured in the film. At the Oct. 20 Hollywood premiere, the cast of media stars, including Sean O'Donnell ("Sickhouse"), Alexandra DeBerry ("A.N.T. Farm"), Michael Eric Reid ("Victorious"), Dylan Riley Snyder ("Kickin' It") and Cassidy Shaffer ("Austin & Ally"), are joined by Oscar nominee Gary Busey (playing Kelly's football coach) and "Memento" star Steve Tobolowksy. In the old Hollywood tradition, publicists Ron Scott and David Kuff had the stars arrive at the premiere in a school bus. We'll let you know the release plans for this fun film as soon as we know. Molly Ringwald, ("Pretty in Pink" and "The Breakfast Club") will star off-Broadway in "Terms of Endearment" as Aurora Greenway, the role that won an Oscar for Shirley MacLaine in 1983. *** You probably know that Jim Parsons, Haley Cuoco and Johnny Galecki have been getting $1 million an episode for "The Big Bang Theory," which may explain why movie actors are defecting to television. Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel are getting $750,000 a show from Netflix for "The Gilmore Girls." Mark Harmon gets $525,000 an episode for "NCIS," while HBO pays Kevin Spacey ("House

of Cards"), Peter Dinklage, Lena Headley, Kit Harrington, Emily Clarke and Nikolaj Coster-Waldeau ("Game of Thrones") each $500,000 a show. Dwayne Johnson parlayed his wrestling career into a $185 million movie career and is now pulling in $400,000 an episode for his HBO series "Ballers." Drew Barrymore ("Santa Clarita Diet"), Emma Stone and Jonah Hill ("Maniac") are each earning $350,000 an episode from Netflix for their series. The stars of "The Simpsons" -- Nancy Cartwright, Dan Castellaneta, Yardley Smith and Julie Kavner -- are getting $315,000 a show just for their voices. There's nothing "Transparent" about Jeffrey Tambor's salary; Amazon pays him $275,000 an episode. Julie Louis-Dreyfuss ("Veep"), Tim Allen ("Last Man Standing"), Patricia Heaton ("The Middle") and the cast of "Modern Family" -- Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Eric Longstreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Sophia Vergara -- all earn $250,000 a show. President Obama's worth is $12.2 million. He may have aged in eight years, but so has his money, and he doesn't have to endure reruns where he looks much younger. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I really like the CBS summer series “American Gothic.” Will it back next summer? — Oliver T., via email A: “American Gothic,” a family drama centered on an affluent Boston family who must redefine themselves following the discovery that their recently deceased patriarch might have been a serial killer, has been canceled by CBS. The series starred Juliet Rylance, Virginia Madsen and Justin Chatwin. Another summer series getting the ax is “BrainDead,” the political-horror satire that starred Elizabeth Winstead, Danny Pino, Tony Shalhoub and Aaron Tveit. Neither series performed as well as expected, and paled by comparison to “Under the Dome,” which had a successful three-season summer run on CBS a few years back. *** Q: I heard on the news that Journey is up for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and if they don’t get in, it will be a travesty. Can you tell me which other artists have been nominated for the honor? — Leslie G., via email A: The 2017 nominees were just announced, and they are: Bad Brains, Chaka Khan, Chic, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, The J. Geils Band, Jane’s Addiction, Janet Jackson, Joan Baez, Joe Tex, Journey, Kraftwerk, MC5, Pearl Jam, Steppenwolf, The Cars, The Zombies, Tupac Shakur and Yes. This year might be the toughest class yet, and I have no idea how they will be able to narrow them down to anywhere from five to seven inductees. If I had my way, I’d choose Journey, Depeche Mode, The Cars, Janet Jackson, Pearl Jam, ELO and Yes. Fans can vote for five artists once each day until Dec. 5.
Go to rockhall. com/vote for more information. *** Q: Can you tell me if and when these programs will be returning to TV? They are: “The Curse of Oak Island,” “Under the Dome” and “Extant.” Thank you. — Ann S., Rochester, New York A: I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The History Channel’s “The Curse of Oak Island” will return Tuesday, Nov. 15, for its fourth season. The show follows brothers Marty and Rick Lagina — originally from Kingsford, Michigan — and their efforts to find the speculated treasure or historical artifacts believed to be on Oak Island. Many have tried and failed before them — and some have even lost their lives investigating the site. However, as mentioned earlier, “Under the Dome” has ended after a successful three-year run. Also, the Halle Berry-starring “Extant” — which centered on astronaut Molly Woods (played by Halle), who returned home to her family inexplicably pregnant after 13 months in outer space on a solo mission, has been canceled. Steven Spielberg was an executive producer of the two-season, 26-episode CBS sci-fi/drama series. Along with Halle, the show boasted an all-star cast that included Grace Gummer, Goran Visnjic, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Camryn Manheim and Michael O’Neill. FINANCIAL ABUSE OFTEN NOT REPORTED The statistics on elder financial abuse are ugly. Abuse victims lose roughly $2.6 billion per year. One in every 20 seniors admits to being the victim of financial abuse, but only one in every 44 cases is reported. In the online blog "Recognizing Signs of Elder Abuse (and Traits of Elder Abusers)," attorney Will Sleeth lists the ways abusers can put pressure on seniors to change their estate plans. They can include bullying, isolating and threatening. The tactics and suggested investments from a financial abuser might sound a bit off as well, such as an anonymous investment club. Characteristics of the abusers themselves can be surprising. They're often educated, sophisticated and well-off. Sometimes they're convicted felons, or attorneys or doctors who lost their licenses to practice. Mostly, however, they're socially isolated, having few friends or social contacts. That's where the Internet can be handy. Many states have court case search features in their online judicial record systems. These are searchable by location, date ... and name. Anyone who is a financial abuser of seniors likely has done it before, and there will be a record of previous court cases and lawsuits. For more information, check Sleeth's site (estateconflicts.com) and read more of the articles he's written. The National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (www.preventelderabuse.org) has a large section on financial abuse. Financial scammers can sink so low as to read newspaper death announcements to identify those who are recently widowed and therefore vulnerable. If you've been the victim of financial abuse, or think someone is trying to scam you, speak up. Call the police. Call your bank and ask to speak to the manager. You can be protected. In a recent visit to my physician, I told him that I was losing weight by restricting my total calories to 1,700 per day on a seven-day running average (so I can go out to eat once in a while). I am trying to keep my fats below 30 percent on a seven-day calorie basis, and I am trying to keep total carbs to 50 percent or so. My physician told me that my diet plan was "old-school." He said that I should eliminate all sugars and all grains. I should eat a couple of ounces of meat and/or eggs. And I should eat as many fruits and vegetables as I want without worrying about calories. In your opinion, should I follow his advice, or should I continue with what has been working for me? — J.B. ANSWER: Your physician is right that counting calories is "old-school." However, if you can stay with it, it will work. If you expend more calories than you take in, you will lose weight. That is the energy balance equation, and there are no exceptions.

However, the issue isn't so straightforward as you might think from that statement. Fat and protein make almost everybody feel more full and satisfied, comparing meals of the same calories, than a high-carbohydrate meal. Plain, fresh fruits and vegetables, absent of dips or sauces that load on the calories, are low in calories, in most cases, and can be eaten in relatively large amounts without slowing weight loss much.
By all means, you can stick with what works for you. That being said, most people find that by adding a little healthy protein and fat, you can stick with your eating plan with less hunger or discomfort. Losing weight can make people feel a little uncomfortable. But I think you will find that the eating plan he outlined, while still keeping an eye on calories, will allow you to reach your weight goals and keep you on track while still feeling well.

* Among the Balonda people, an African tribe that dwells along the Zambezi River, it was once customary for a groom to promise that he'll supply kindling wood to his mother-in-law for the rest of her life. * Those who study such things — word mavens with a penchant for statistics, presumably — have determined that, on average, English-language text contains 56 e's for every q.
* It was Bulgarian-French philosopher Tzvetan Todorov who made the following sage observation: "We should not be simply fighting evil in the name of good, but struggling against the certainties of people who claim always to know where good and evil are to be found." * The seahorse is the only animal whose head is positioned at a right angle to its body. * Recently retired sportscaster Vin Scully served 67 seasons as the play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers — starting in Brooklyn in 1950, then moving with the team to Los Angeles in 1958 — making him the longest-tenured broadcaster with with a single team in the history of professional sports. Over the years he's had many fans, including Chris Carter, creator of the long-running TV series "The X Files." One of the main characters, Dana Scully (played by actress Gillian Anderson), was named for the sportscaster. * In William Shakespeare's day, the sound of thunder often was described as a "rounce-robble-hobble." * It was beloved Scottish author J.M. * A fisherman in the Philippines recently revealed a treasure that he'd been keeping under his bed for 10 years: a 75-pound natural pearl with an estimated value of $100 million. Evidently, after finding the pearl in a giant clam, he decided to keep it as a good-luck charm. The "Pearl of Puerto," as it's known, blew the world record out of the water (pun intended). The previous record holder for largest natural pearl was the "Pearl of Lao-Tsu" (sometimes called the "Pearl of Allah"), which weighs in at a mere 14 pounds. * The female Jesus bird is the one in charge, it would seem. in the growth-obsessed American business model, there is an issue that needs to be addressed. A backup quarterback kneeling for the anthem is not causing 20 million people to tune out. Certainly the counter-programming of the election debates factors into the decline, but it's more likely a case of the NFL shooting itself it in the foot, and that problem lays squarely at the feet of commissioner Roger Goodell and the team owners.
Less used to mean more for the NFL, but maybe that's why the league has acted so confounded to learn that "more of" is leading to "less than." Maybe there can be too much of a good thing after all. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
FOR NFL, MORE MEANS LESS The NFL is under siege, and some industry analysts are pointing at the great American game's sudden decline in TV ratings as proof. According to Nielson, the company most trusted to tell us about who is watching what and when, ratings this season are down somewhere between 10 percent and 15 percent, depending on the day you're watching. Is there any reason to worry? Of course not. The NFL is still the most-watched programming in these United States. During this decade, the NFL Sunday Night Football broadcast on NBC is the most-watched television series there is, averaging a little over 15 percent of all households watching TV. The lowest-rated games still dwarf the number of people watching anything else. More than 200 million individual viewers have tuned in to watch a game over the past five years. That's more than 60 percent of our entire country. So broadcasters and advertising agencies can rest easy. Still, anytime any commodity's value drops by 10 percent
This is a league that delights in destroying their players. They will fine their biggest stars the equivalent of the manufacturer's suggested retail price of a Buick for the crime of taking off their helmet or pressing a finger to their lips after scoring a touchdown. They'll humiliate and suspend their biggest star, Tom Brady, and throw shade on the Patriots, the watered-down league's only perennial powerhouse, over the lack of air pressure. But player concussions? No such thing — and don't you dare try and prove it. Don't want to stand for the pregame Francis Scott Key song? Fine ... but you better make it to the post-Katie Perry halftime press conference or that's another Buick you won't be buying, buck-o. Gambling problem? No, it's all just "fantasy" (but pay no attention to the Raiders moving to Vegas for $750 million, that is, unless you pay taxes). Beat up your girlfriend, your wife or your kid? Here, take a multi-million dollar contract and report to camp or just skip the team flight to London. And everyone knows you can't kill anybody if you're the best player on defense. Games used to be an event ... they used to make really cool films about them, too. Now you can't go a couple of hours without seeing a game because it's on Thursday night, Sunday morning, Sunday afternoon, late Sunday afternoon, Sunday night and Monday night. The only break you get from the NFL is college football all day Saturday, and when the college season is over, the NFL will play on Saturday, too.

Please Support Our Advertisers The reason so many people acted so swiftly was because of growing knowledge that breed-specific legislation simply doesn't work. In fact, the city of Edmonton, Alberta, rescinded a similar ban in 2012 because it was difficult to enforce. A CBC article added that the number of dog bites in that city per year never changed, staying between 400 and 600, from a variety of breeds in addition to pit bulls.
BREED BANS DON'T DETER DOG ATTACKS In early October, the city of Montreal began enforcing a bylaw that bans the ownership or adoption of any dog breed identified as a pit bull. Alongside of this, the city ordered any pit bulls in its shelters to be euthanized. The city council passed the measure after a dog attacked and killed a 55-year-old woman. A massive rescue effort was launched by organizations and individuals based outside the city to transfer dogs under a death sentence to new shelters, to foster some out, and otherwise try to save as many as possible.
Banning one breed doesn't stop the problem of dog attacks. I've seen aggressive dogs in many different breeds — including normally laid-back Labs who just couldn't be approached safely — and I've met wonderfully behaved dogs from breeds considered to be aggressive, like Sally, the sweet and gentle pittie who, along with her owner, greets me on my morning walk. There isn't a perfect solution out there. But cities could better spend their money helping owners learn how to train and care for their dogs, rather than try to remove one type of dog from the city limits. EDITOR'S NOTE: As we went to press, the Quebec Superior Court suspended the pit bull ban. The city is appealing.
PICKING THE PERFECT CAT DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm really excited -- my mom has decided we can get a kitten! We're going to adopt one
www.TidbitsFlorida.com • November 4, 2016 • 11 from the local shelter. Do you have any advice on picking the best cat? -- Jaynah and Sherar in Poughkeepsie, New York DEAR JAYNAH AND SHERAR: First of all, congratulations! It's exciting to get your first pet. And I'm glad you're choosing to adopt from a shelter. While I've always liked to say that we don't pick cats, they pick us, that's not entirely true. Sometimes it takes a little time to find that perfect fit. With kittens, it's even harder, because they're almost universally cute. When you visit the shelter, ask if you're allowed to play with the kittens before choosing one, or to observe them in a play area outside of their cages. Note how they interact with each other and with humans. Are they confident or aggressive? Standoffish, or anxious and shy? Will they play with a toy or string that is dangled in front of them? Note the kittens' general health. It's easy to spot a potential problem if a cat is listless, won't play, has visible sores, shakes its head frequently or has trouble walking. Most shelters are open about a cat's known health problems. That way potential owners can decide if they want to take on the costs of bringing an adopted cat back to health. Again, take your time and don't commit to one kitten immediately. If there are multiple shelters in the area, check them out as well. And of course, once you've found your new friend, be sure to schedule a checkup with a veterinarian to give it the healthiest start with your family. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

ART DECO Q: I have become fascinated by Art Deco after purchasing a cocktail set from the 1930s at a flea market in Chicago. Can you recommend a good general reference? — Laura, Naperville, Illinois A: Judith Miller claims in her new book, "Art Deco: Living With the Art Deco Style," that Art Deco completely transformed all branches of design, from the fine and decorative arts to transport, product design, fashion, graphic design and even architecture. This might be a good place to begin your exploration of Art Deco. *** Q: During the 1940s, I attended a Nelson Eddy concert in Springfield, Illinois, with my parents and brother. How can I find out the date of the concert and approximate value of the autographed program I have? — Betty, Decatur, Illinois A: You will have to become a detective to find the date of the concert. I suggest you begin your investigation by tracking down the microfilm of the newspapers published in Springfield at that time. Contact the ven-

Then replace the five mostused light bulbs in your house with ENERGY STAR certified bulbs. SCENT YOUR HOME WITH WOODSY POTPOURRI What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "potpourri"? A category on "Jeopardy"? It's that and more: a collection, a sort of mish-mash or hodgepodge of things, and when I'm out for a fall walk in a park or on a trail, I think of nature being a potpourri. There's so much to look at, smell and touch. Imagine if you could capture and save that sensory experience. Well, you can when you gather nature finds and stir them up to create a beautiful and aromatic mixture that can be displayed in a bowl or small basket in your home.
seeds and pressed colorful leaves. Add dried orange, lime and lemon peels, and dried orange slices (dry the peelings and fruit on a rack in a 200-degree oven for two to three hours, or set the items on a tray to air-dry for several days). Add kitchen spices to this "woodland stew," such as whole bay leaves, broken cinnamon sticks, cloves and whole allspice. You may wish to add a few shakes of ground nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon, too.
Scoop the contents into wooden bowls or decorative dishes, and set them around your home on shelves and tables. If you share some with friends, present the gift in decorative clear containers, such as Mason jars or recycled food jars with labels removed. Paint or cover the lids with fabric, and tie with a ribbon. Note: Collect bark and moss from the ground or from cut branches, not from a living tree.
Here's how to mix up a batch of woodsy potpourri from autumn's bounty:
With a big wooden spoon, let your school-age child lightly toss the ingredients. Doing this step outside on a picnic table is fun and eliminates kitchen cleanup. An adult may add several drops of clove, orange or cinnamon oil (available in supermarkets and pharmacies).

The Humane Society of Broward County is offering FREE spay or neuter for pit bulls and pit bull mixes thanks to a grant received from Dolly’s Dream. In order to qualify, the owner must be a Broward County resident and the dog must be 8 weeks. The goal is to sterilize 100 dogs over the next six months. Vaccinations, heartworm testing and microchipping are also available for a fee. Appointments are necessary so please contact spayneuter@hsbroward.com or 954-463-7729. The surgeries will be performed at the Humane Society of Broward County located at 2070 Griffin Road and at the portable spay/neuter sterilization unit located at Sunview Park 1500 SW 42nd Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. Here are the simple facts as to why you should have your pets spayed or neutered: 1. An un-neutered male dog can detect an un-spayed female dog in heat for up to 3 ½ miles. As a result more than 80% of dogs hit by cars are un-neutered males. Neutering pets makes them less likely to roam. 2. Altering your pet greatly reduces or eliminates the desire for them to spray or mark their territory. 3. A dog that is neutered is less likely to fight with other animals for a mate or territory. 4. You’ll greatly reduce the chance of testicular and ovarian cancer if your pets are altered at an early age. 5. Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than do those who have been spayed or neutered. 6. Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives. Don’t you want your pet to live as long as possible? The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from companies and people who want to help us help the homeless animals. For more information call 954-9893977 or visit our website at www.humanebroward.com to see pets available for adoption, make a donation or find out about upcoming events.
Tour the Hallandale Historic Curci House Saturday, November 5, 2016 Visit and tour the historic Frank and Rosina Curci House. Built in 1924 on an 11-acre site, Villa Providence was built in the Mediterranean style with Dade pine floors and imported Cuban tiles. The home withstood the intense hurricane of 1926 which destroyed many nearby homes. The Curci family took in many neighbors as they rebuilt after the storm. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
