SLEEP ON IT • The word “sleep” comes from the German adjective “schlapp” meaning “weak” or “limp.” The same root word also gave us the word “slack.”

• We think of going to sleep as a gradual procedure, where we slowly drift off. However, going to sleep is actually an instantaneous process: one second the organism is aware— the next second it is not.

• The average adult needs to sleep 7 to 9 hours per night. Napoleon Bonaparte needed only four to six hours of sleep a night, as did Thomas Edison and Winston Churchill. However, Albert Einstein is said to have spent about ten hours a night in bed. It is not true that older people need less sleep. However, over 50% of people over 64 years old suffer from some type of sleep disorder.

SLEEP (continued):
• A survey showed that people who characteristically get ten hours of sleep suffered twice as many heart attacks and three and a half times as many strokes as people who slept seven hours or less.

• All birds sleep, and they all experience dreams as well, although they spend very little time dreaming. • Zebra herds sleep in shifts, with half the herd sleeping while the other half stands guard. • Horses can sleep lightly while standing; moderately if they have support for their head; but they must lie down to sleep heavily. They sleep on their sides 85% of the time, and on their stomachs 15% of the time.
SLEEP SCHEDULES • Two experimenters spent two months living in the darkness of Mammoth Cave in Kentucky in 1938. For the first month they lived 21-hour days using electric lights; and for the second month they lived 28-hour days. Although the men felt that they had adjusted to the new schedule, their bodies showed through blood and urine tests and temperature readings that they were still operating on a 24-hour cycle. • People who are transferred to the perpetual night of the Arctic tend to sleep about an hour longer than they did prior to going there. • One experiment placed volunteers alone in a completely dark sound-proof room, with gloves to reduce sensations. The object was to see how much time a human would spend sleeping when there was absolutely nothing to do. On the first day, the subjects slept 12 to 14 hours. But as time passed, the amount of sleep decreased until after one week they were sleeping six hours or less each day. This suggested to researchers that wakefulness is the basic state of the brain. (continued)
• Ground squirrels hibernate every year for a certain period of time. Even if they are kept in warm, light rooms where there is plenty of food available, they will still hibernate for the usual period of time. • Giraffes sleep only 2 hours a day in five- to 10-minute sessions. • Only one half of a dolphin’s brain goes to sleep at a time. Dolphins are capable of what is known as unihemispheric sleep, in which one hemisphere of the brain goes into a deep sleep while the other hemisphere remains awake. This allows dolphins to sleep under water without drowning. Dolphins spend approximately one-third of their lives asleep.
• Humans sleep on average around three hours less than other primates like chimps, rhesus monkeys, squirrel monkeys and baboons, all of which sleep for 10 hours.
• French expert Pierre Fluchaire maintains that, "It is a huge mistake to go sixteen hours without sleeping. Nothing is so civilized as a siesta." He feels that American businesses could improve productivity by encouraging a little napping now and then.
DO PLANTS SLEEP? • Most plants show some primitive form of sleep. For instance, the sugar in an ear of ripened corn will flow downward through the stalk and into the roots at night. In the morning, the sugar rises again. That's why an ear of corn tastes starchy if picked in the evening, but sweet when picked in the morning.
IT’S A FACT • Sleep is a universal characteristic of complex living organisms and has been observed in insects, mollusks, fish, amphibians, birds, and mammals.
Greece take a siesta at least three times a week, lasting an average of one hour. And in China, factory workers and office personnel alike regularly take a nap after lunch. Article 49 of the Chinese constitution maintains that "the working population has a right to rest." Many Japanese companies provide employees with quiet, darkened relaxation rooms.
• The heliotrope is a plant that reacts to sunlight by opening its leaves and shutting them again when the light is gone. When placed in complete darkness, they will continue to open and close right on schedule.
FORTY WINKS
• Bats sleep for 20 out of every 24 hours. Lions sleep 17 hours out every 24. Squirrels and cats sleep about 14 hours a day but donkeys only about 4.
• In sleep deprived people, it is most difficult for them to stay awake between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. This is because the body reaches its rhythmic low at that time. An opposing low occurs around twelve hours later— in the afternoon after lunch.
• The sleep of moles is very like our sleep: it lasts 8 hours, and about 2 hours is spent dreaming.
• Many countries realize the natural need of the human body to nap in the afternoon. About 42% of people in
• Daytime naps improve memory and cut the risk of heart disease. • "Frequent naps will keep you from getting old, especially if you take them while driving." -Evan Esar

Amazing Animals
BIRD BRAINS In ancient Greece the owl was associated with Athena, goddess of wisdom, and so came to symbolize wisdom. But is an owl wise? And should you really feel insulted if someone calls you "birdbrain"? Actually, the brain of most birds is big and heavy in proportion to body weight. However, an owl doesn't match many birds (such as the goose, raven, or common crow) for intelligence. • In experiments done at Harvard, pigeons were taught they would receive a food reward when they pecked at a picture of a human. They were then shown all manner of photos, but they proved they understood the concept of “human” when they pecked at pictures of infants and old people alike, of every race, every culture, and every size. They pecked at pictures of the back of a human head, or a single hand, or only a foot. They pecked at pictures of nude humans, humans wearing strange clothing, and pictures containing a tiny human head in a group photo of animals. Likewise, when pigeons were taught to peck at pictures of water, they pecked at pictures of oceans, brooks, sink taps, and puddles in the middle of the road. However, they did not peck at a picture of the road taken after the puddles had dried up. • Pigeons strapped in cages to the undersides of helicopters have been trained to peck a switch whenever they see the colors orange, yellow, or red. The helicopters then fly over the ocean in areas where planes or ships have gone down. When a pigeon spots orange life vests, yellow rafts, or red flares, they peck the signal and are rewarded with food. Pigeons score 90% every time, compared to only 40% for humans. (continued next page) • Some types of birds such as warblers and kingfishers will build nests next to
a wasp or hornet nest to help ward off predators. • Eleven different species of birds in Britain learned how to remove the tin foil and cardboard caps on milk bottles left on porches and doorsteps so they could help themselves to a free meal. They also followed milkmen on their routes. • A type of bird called a black kite which lives in India is known as a “fire hawk” because of its habit of picking up burning twigs from fires, then dropping them into dry grass in order to flush small animals which flee from the resulting fire. • Penguins return to the very same nest year after year, building it up with new stones in a ring. When they return to their nesting grounds each year, the old nest will be buried under several feet of snow. Still, the penguins immediately begin to pile up stones on top of the snow. When the snow melts, the new stones will settle exactly on top of the old. • Observers watching peregrine falcons have seen them teaming up to teach their young how to catch prey on the wing. One parent, carrying prey, will fly above the offspring while the other flies below the offspring. The prey is dropped, and if the youngster fails to nab it as it falls, the parent below will catch it. The two parents will then switch places and continue dropping the prey until Junior catches on. • Researchers once put a shearwater (a bird that migrates from Pole to Pole) into a dark box and released it in Britain 3,000 miles (4,828 km) from its home. The bird found its way back to its home nest in 12 days— flying across open ocean at a rate of 250 miles (402 km) per day.

HOLLYWOOD — The honeymoon is over for George Clooney. No, not his marriage; after taking some time off, he's chosen his next two projects. And while Clooney will direct and produce (with his partner, Grant Heslov), he will not act in them. Shooting began last month in Los Angeles for "Suburbicon," with Matt Damon, James Brolin, Julianne Moore and Oscar Isaac.

George's second project is producing (with Steven Soderbergh) the spin-off of the "Ocean's 11" trilogy, "Ocean's Eight." Director Gary Ross has assembled an incredible cast with Oscar winners Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway, as well as Dakota Fanning, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling and Rihanna. They've begun shooting on the streets of New York for a June 2018 opening.

He's also co-starring in "Shut In" (no, not again!) with Naomi Watts (now in theaters); "Wonder" with Julia Roberts (April 7); "The Book of Henry," also with Naomi Watts (June 16); and "Burn Your Maps," with Virginia Madsen and Vera Farmiga, awaiting a release date.
*** Matt Damon's next releases are "The Great Wall," opening Feb. 17, and "Downsizing," with Kristen Wiig, Alec Baldwin, Neil Patrick Harris and Christoph Waltz, arriving in late 2017. Julianne Moore heads the "Kingsmen" sequel, "Kingsmen: The Golden Circle," due June 16, and "Wonderstruck," with Michelle Williams, upcoming.
Ryan Reynolds, who scored a bullseye with "Deadpool" ($58 million cost/$782 million gross), will hit screens in May in the sci-fi thriller "Life," with Rebecca Ferguson and Jake Gyllenhaal, and "The Hitman's Bodyguard," with Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman and Selma Hayek, out Aug. 20.
Brie Larson, this year's Oscar winner for "Room," has been shooting films back to back. The gigantic epic that is "Kong: Skull Island," opens March 10, followed by "Free Fire," with Armie Hammer, opening in April, and the musical "Basmati Blues," with Scott Bakula (who definitely doesn't sing on "NCIS: New Orleans") awaiting a release date. "Glass Castle," with Naomi Watts, Max Greenfield and Woody Harrelson, also is in need of an opening date. Tom Hardy Q: A while back you had mentioned a TV series that was going to star Tom Hardy. Can you give me an update on it? — Genie P., via email A: According to FX, "Taboo" is "set in 1813, based on an original story by Tom Hardy and his father, Chips Hardy. Tom plays the lead role of James Keziah Delaney, "a rogue adventurer who returns from Africa with 14 ill-gotten diamonds to seek vengeance after the death of his father. Refusing to sell the family business to the East India Company, he sets out to build his own trade and shipping empire, and finds himself playing a very dangerous game." Now we know a little bit more about it: It will premiere simultaneously on FX in the U.S. and BBC One in the U.K. in early 2017 (as of this writing, an exact date had not been revealed), and it will consist of eight one-hour episodes. Along with Tom, the series also stars Oona Chaplin (granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, and great-granddaughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill), David Hayman ("Sid and Nancy" and "The Tailor of Panama"), Michael Kelly (of "House of Cards" fame) and Jonathan Pryce ("Jurassic Park," "Evita" and "Game of Thrones" alum). *** Q: I can't wait to see "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"! I heard this will be the first movie in a series. Is that true? — Linda E., Port Charlotte, Florida A: "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," which hit theaters Nov. 18, is indeed the first in a series С of five films, to be exact. And it was recently announced that none other than Johnny Depp will play a major role in
Depositphotos
the second movie. In fact (SPOILER ALERT), word has it that he has a cameo in the first film. The next installment has secured a Nov. 18, 2018, premiere date, with shooting scheduled to begin next year. Although as of this writing Johnny's role has not been confirmed, rumors are circulating that he'll play the role of Gellert Grindelwald, one of the most dangerous dark wizards of all time. *** Q: I hope you have some scoop on what to expect for season three of Lifetime's "Unreal." It will be back for another season, right? — Kallie Y., via email A: Yes indeed. The snarky, sexy and downright scary series will be back for another go-round on the set of "Everlasting," the fictional "Bachelor"-type dating competition show that reveals all the behind-the-scenes machinations and goings-on that propel these kinds of "reality" series. Last year, "Everlasting" broke new ground by featuring the first African-American suitor, and this year they'll shake things up even more by featuring the first female suitor. Series stars Shiri Appleby and Constance Zimmer announced the news during a Facebook Live video in late October, jokingly wondering how many of the 25 contestants their own characters will sleep with by the end of the show. possible you'll be in that group who will pay more per month for Medicare than others who are "held harmless" from increases. Go to Medicare.gov to read about the 2017 Part B premiums. So ... where shall we spend our windfall? There are approximately 60 million of us who will get that extra money starting in January. At $5 apiece, that comes to $300 million a month.
DON'T SPEND IT ALL IN ONE PLACE Have you decided where you're going to spend your Social Security windfall? The average recipient will see an increase of $5 in monthly benefits in 2017, a whopping 0.3 percent increase. Broken down into real numbers, the average retiree will now receive $1,360 in monthly benefits. Of course, this is a bonus after last year, when we saw no increase whatsoever, while prices around us rose on nearly everything: food, shelter, prescription drugs. The adjustment is based on the annual Consumer Price Index, which apparently rose just enough to get us that $5. If you're under full retirement age and get Social Security benefits, the maximum income you can make (before they start taking $1 for every $2 you earn) will go up to $16,920 per year. The year you reach full retirement age, you can earn up to $44,880 before they take out a dollar for every $3 you earn. Once you reach full retirement age, there's no limit on your earnings. Go online to www.ssa.gov/cola for more details. Don't forget to scroll down and view the history of the Cost of Living Adjustments. It wasn't that long ago that the increase was 3.6 percent (2012) and 5.8 percent (2009). If you'll be filing for Medicare in 2017, but because of your age won't be filing for Social Security, beware. It's
HOW NOT TO RUN OUT OF RETIREMENT MONEY One big fear of many seniors is that they will run out of retirement money. Chuck Price, president of Price Financial Group Wealth Management Inc., has some ideas about how to stretch out the money we do have. * Keep working. Even if it's a part-time job, perhaps in your own career or in a new one, every dollar you earn is one dollar you don't have to take out of your retirement savings. Consider signing up for temporary employment, perhaps with an agency, to make more money. * Create alternate income streams. If you've always wanted a small side-business that produces income, this might be the time to create one. * Cut your costs. This is always easier said than done, but cutting costs will keep more dollars in your savings. Consider selling a vehicle you don't absolutely need, pocketing the money and saving on the cost of insurance and maintenance. Another idea, keeping a

tally for one month of every dime you spend. At the end of the month, review how many times you went out for dinner, how much you spent on incidentals or entertainment. Decide where you can cut back. If your grocery bills are high, look at ways to cut those costs. * Think about the financial help you give others. If you regularly give money to children and grandchildren or to charity, this might be the time to stop and reconsider whether you can continue to do that. DEAR DR. ROACH: Six months ago, I noticed a "bald spot" on my right cheek. It is round and about the size of a 50-cent piece. I've never had this problem before, even though I am going bald. I am generally healthy. I am concerned that this might be an infection or cancer. There is no itching, redness or discoloration of any sort. Can you address this issue? I am worried that it will spread, and I want to know if it will grow back. — Anon.

About half of people will have their hair regrow within a year. If the skin otherwise looks completely normal, it is very unlikely to be a cancer or infection. A dermatologist should be able to confirm the diagnosis. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Is there any type of corrective surgery for eye "floaters"? — J.W. ANSWER: Floaters are bits of cellular debris that float inside the vitreous humor in the eye. The eye has no way of getting rid of these, normally. Most people are not bothered by them, and they do not need to be treated unless they are interfering with vision. However, if they do affect vision or are very bothersome, there are surgical techniques developed to deal with them. I've had readers write in that they had treatment with laser or with vitrectomy. At least one ophthalmologist of one of my readers has a specialty practice just treating floaters.
The sudden appearance of floaters can be a sign of serious disease, especially a detached retina; this should be evaluated immediately, especially if any changes in vision are present. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: For two to three months, I have been taking 17 grams of polyethylene glycol mixed in 8 ounces of water three times a week. Finally, I have found something that is effective in relieving my lifelong chronic constipation problem. In the past two months, however, I have lost approximately 10 pounds and at 5 feet, 4 1/2 inches tall, I now weigh 100 pounds. Could the weight loss be related to the use of the polyethylene glycol? — P.D.M. ANSWER: Polyethylene glycol (Miralax and others) is a nonabsorbable, inert substance that carries water with it as it goes through your digestive tract. This gives the
LIVER CANCER RISK GRAINS PROTECT INCREASES WITH AGAINST HEART OTHER CONDITIONS DISEASE Overweight and diabetes may increase the risk for liver cancer, according to a study published in Cancer Research. Researchers assessed data from 1.57 million participants from the Liver Cancer Pooling Project and monitored BMI, waist circumference, type 2 diabetes incidence rates, and liver cancer diagnoses. An increase of 5 kg/m2 in BMI and 5 cm in waist circumference increased the risk for liver cancer when compared to those with lower BMIs and waist circumferences. Type 2 diabetes also increased the risk for cancer. Researchers suspect the increased fatty tissue in the liver contributes to carcinogenesis through inflammation and insulin insensitivity. Interventions to lessen these conditions may prevent liver cancer.
Consumption of both refined and whole grains helped reduce weight, blood pressure, and total and LDL cholesterol among overweight and obese patients, according to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Researchers compared heart disease risk factors in 40 participants on either a whole-grain diet, including rice, wheat, and oats, or a refined-grain diet. While both groups saw health improvements, decreased diastolic blood pressure was three times greater in the wholegrain group, compared to the refined-grain group. Researchers suspect similar dietary interventions may prove effective for hypertension prevention and lower mortality risks for heart disease.

stool more moisture and makes it easier to pass. It is considered very safe. I don't think that it is responsible for 10 pounds of weight loss. I would be more concerned about an underlying medical issue, especially one that might cause constipation, such a s thyroid disease. DAIRY PRODUCTS INCREASE PROSTATE CANCER MORTALITY Dairy products increase the risk of dying from prostate cancer, according to a meta-analysis published in Nutrition Journal. Researchers reviewed 11 studies that encompassed more than 700,000 participants and assessed dairy intake and cancer mortality rates. Male participants who consumed the most whole milk increased their risk of death from prostate cancer by as much as 50 percent, compared with those who consumed the least amount. Researchers suspect the animal fat and calcium found in milk may contribute to the increased risk. Lu W, Chen H, Niu Y, Wu H, Xia D, Wu Y. own risks. * As Thanksgiving approaches, you might want to add to your vocabulary. In the Eurasian nation of Georgia, there is a term to describe the feeling of being full but unable to stop eating due to the deliciousness of the meal: "Shemomedjamo" means, literally, "I accidentally ate the whole thing."
* Thought for the Day: "The door of a bigoted mind opens outwards so that the only result of the pressure of facts upon it is to close it more snugly." — Ogden Nash * It was noted American poet and feminist Adrienne Rich who made the following sage observation: "Language is as real, as tangible, in our lives as streets, pipelines, telephone switchboards, microwaves, radioactivity, cloning laboratories, nuclear power stations." * When you were growing up, did kids call each other "chicken" to insult each other's bravery? In all likelihood, the answer is yes. That word has been used since the 14th century to insult those considered to be cowardly. * According to a study conducted by researchers at Emory University, heterosexual couples who spend more than $20,000 on their wedding were three and a half times as likely to have shorter marriages than those who were more frugal. This principle extends to the ring, too; men who spent more than $2,000 on an engagement ring were more likely to end up divorced. * It takes about 70 hours to read the entire Bible aloud — even longer if you take breaks to sleep and eat (and shower, one would hope). * Aside from being plant products, what do pinecones and pineapples have in common? You might be surprised. Not only do both have scales (which are obvious to see), but the scales share the same pattern: 13 rows spiraling one way, and eight rows spiraling the other way. * It was American science-fiction writer Hal Clement who made the following sage observation: "Speculation is perfectly all right, but if you stay there you've only founded a superstition. If you test it, you've started a science." * Americans have more debt from student loans than credit cards and car loans combined. * For centuries, the month of June has been the most popular choice for weddings. One of the purported reasons was that some hundreds of years ago, this time was just after May's annual bath, so the happy couple and the guests were about as clean as could be hoped. * It is the policy of the United States government to never insure federal buildings. The rationale? With such vast holdings, it's best for the government to assume its
* You've probably heard that classical Greek philosopher Socrates died after drinking hemlock, carrying out the death sentence imposed on him for impiety and for corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens. You might not realize, though, that the poison is not derived from the hemlock tree, but from a flowering plant known as poison hemlock, a relative of the carrot. * Oysters and worms, although unable to see images, are able to sense dark and light. * You might be surprised to learn that actor James Doohan, best known for his role as Scotty in the original "Star Trek" series, served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during World War II. He saw combat for the first time at the invasion of Normandy on D-Day, where he led his men through a field of anti-tank mines to reach higher ground. After defensive positions had been established that night, he was crossing between command posts when he was shot six times -- by a Canadian sentry. One of the bullets hit his chest, but it was stopped by a silver cigarette case that his brother had given him. * Researchers in the United Kingdom have developed what they're calling the "SlugBog" -- a robot that eats slugs and is powered by the bio-gas created by their decay. * If you've ever had to explain yourself the morning after a raucous night out, you might be glad to know that the Tsonga people of southern Africa have a word that can be useful in certain of these circumstances. "Rhwe" means to sleep on the floor without a mat, while drunk and naked. * The University of Gottingen, in Germany, is in possession of a rare Bible -- it's printed on 2,470 palm leaves. horizon that even remotely fits the bill to replace them.
HOPE YOU'RE HAPPY NOW We all hope you're happy now, Chicago. The World Series championship ... I mean, that's just great for you, Chicago, except for one little thing: You ruined sports. Yes, we know how much you detested being the "loveable losers." We know how badly you wanted to be like the rest of the obnoxious winners across this great land. We hope you got your money's worth at the bars in Wrigleyville, hope it was everything you ever wished it could be, because you took away the one charming thing left in team sports. America is now completely devoid of a loveable loser, and there doesn't appear to be any heir apparent. In essence, the Cubs success has left no successors to the (non) crown. Green Bay fans, New Orleans Saints fans ... they have been satiated. You could have made a case for the New York Rangers fans that had to endure the chants of "1940," or the Boston Red Sox fans that had to gnash their teeth amid jeers of "1918" while being force fed a steady diet of Babe Ruth fables. The Royals won the World Series. Hell, even the Maryland Terrapins won an NCAA basketball championship. The Cubs were the last team that everyone kind of pulled for deep, deep down (St. Louis being the notable exemption), and there is no team on the
First of all, let's dispel the myth that Chicago has been championship starved. This generation has seen the Second City finish first more often than any other city in America since 1990 when it comes to championships. When you add up all of the NBA, MLB, NHL and NFL championship wins from 1990 to today, Chicago leads the pack with 11 wins. Boston (9), New York (9) and Los Angeles (8) bow to you, and you're not going to get any sympathy from anyone for being forced to watch Michael Jordan win six titles. You were never losers ... and with the exception of those stuck inside O'Hare for a layover, everyone likes Chicago, so knock it off. The question now is, whom do we collectively pull for? The Buffalo Bills would have been a good candidate, but let's face it, you can't root for the Ryan brothers. Notre Dame? Nah ... win or lose, they air every week on NBC. Rutgers? No ... they're too stabby in New Brunswick. You can't root for the Cleveland Indians as long as they insist on using that ridiculous, racist mascot, although you can now make a case for the Browns — post-Johnny Football. I'm thinking that maybe the St. Louis Blues could work, or maybe the Sacramento Kings, but they're not sexy enough, really. Army, Navy and Air Force ... imagine if an armed forces squad could make it to the NCAA playoffs and knock off Alabama ... those are teams I think we all can get behind. Sure it sounds a bit crazy, but weirder things have happened ... just ask the newly minted "lifelong" Cubs fan in the next cubicle. But to paraphrase Chicago's own Chance the Rapper, hope you're happy, hope you're real happy, Chicago ... that was such a selfish thing to do. LEARNING PET CPR
INVESTING IN YOUR DOG DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I've had a lot of trouble training my Dalmatian, "Damian," to behave around other dogs and people. It has really limited our outdoors time, which is very disappointing because I always envisioned bringing him around to my favorite neighborhood spots, playing in the dog park and having him in the same room with friends. What can I do to fix his bad behavior? -- Jeff T., Atlanta DEAR JEFF: Although I always stress the importance of daily training in basic behavior, and how important it is to socialize puppies to both humans and other dogs, sometimes following these basics still isn't enough. I think of training as an investment in your dog. The more often you invest, the better the returns in terms of behavior and bonding. However, you've got to consider the quality of that training investment, too -- as well as each dog's individual temperament and capacity for learning. Many inexperienced dog owners learn to train as they go. Some breeds of dogs help them along a bit -- I remember as a kid, our family's Golden retriever "Saucy" actually kept us to a routine training and walking schedule -- but other dogs aren't so easy to train or willing to learn. They're not bad dogs, just different. So, when your best efforts aren't quite enough, it's time
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Several years ago, I lost one of my dogs, "Corny," to a sudden illness when he collapsed and stopped breathing. Not sure what to do, I rushed him to the nearby vet's office, but they were unable to revive him. From that incident, I resolved never to feel so helpless if it should happen to one of my pets again. I learned the basics of pet CPR from that vet, and have since taken online courses to learn more and to stay up to date on changes in performing pet CPR. I urge every pet owner to become familiar with CPR for pets, whether their dog or cat or other pet is young or old. — Janine C., Chattanooga, Tennessee DEAR JANINE: Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I know the loss of Corny must have been heart-wrenching ... it's incredibly difficult to lose a part of your family. Learning CPR is indeed a way to bring a little more assurance to pet owners that they can do something when their pet falls ill. Performing CPR — breathing for your pet, performing chest compressions if the heart has stopped — during the rush to the emergency vet can make a big difference in the outcome. CPR methods vary between species, of course, and between different sizes of pets. But there is good information to be found from places online like the AMVA (American Veterinary Medical Association), which offers a video tutorial. It's well worth your time to learn this lifesaving technique. Send your questions and tips to ask@pawscorner. com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

STUFF THAT MATTERS My 90-year-old mom recently passed away. We have valued tender days with our kids and friends, sharing meals and memories of her generous and full life. Now conversations begin about what we do with her possessions. Over her latter years, she downsized from a house and yard to a townhome, then to a retirement community apartment, and recently to an "assisted living" room. By the last move, she had eliminated all but a few things that really mattered to her. There's the hand-painted wooden candleholder that was tucked in her great-grandparents' trunk on their voyage from Sweden to America in the 19th century, a wedding gown and "going away" dress, artwork, confirmation Bible and the 1940s maple hutch where she happily displayed many of the keepers. So, now what do we do? The keepsakes that survived the cuts can't stay in our garage forever.
raine as she stepped away from the long family table. She returned with gift bags for the adult nieces, nephews and grandkids, each containing an English bone china teacup. Once the rage in the 1950s, her collection now lives on in our homes. I've tucked an easy-care succulent in mine.
Here are thoughts about stuff that matters, and what to do with it.

When Mom's recollection of times past were still sharp, I asked her to tell me the background stories of the precious stuff; things that have been silent reminders of what makes our family unique. As I typed away item by item on my laptop, she got lost in the memories, and I got a glimpse of her as not just my mother, but a woman with a life and history that fed into my own.
It's not easy knowing what to do with all of the stuff that mattered to a loved one. While deciding, I'll pack away items in bins, number the outsides and record the contents in my computer for easy retrieval when I am ready.
Thanks to the reminiscing, her grandchildren have an appreciation of heirlooms they now enjoy.
—Give yourself a time period, and if you don't think you'll use a "storeaway," let it go. Their favorite keepsakes don't have to be yours.

The bow will make it to your destination uncrushed, and you can stick it on at the last minute. * To avoid unsightly flour marks on the outside of a cake, just dust the pan with a bit of your cake mix. * To make quick work of avocados when making guacamole, use a potato masher. * If you suspect a slow air leak in your tire but can't find an obvious puncture spot, do like the professionals: squirt the tire with soapy water, and the air escaping from the hole will begin to make a bubble. You can use this for any kind of tire, car or bicycle. * "Want that white wine chilled? Try freezing grapes to use as ice cubes. Keeps it cold, but won't water it down. Plus, it's a nice touch!" — A.A. in Fla. * Use rock salt to clean stuck-on bits from a cast iron pan. Never use soap.
