DREAMS by Janet Spencerr Every 90 minutes during the night humans enter a period of dreaming, characterized by rapid eye movements (REM) and a distinct pattern on the electroencephalograph. About a quarter of the time spent asleep is spent dreaming. It is not only sleep that is necessary— it is dreaming. Those who are prevented from dreaming for research purposes lose their productivity and eventually may become psychotic. Come along with Tidbits as we explore our dreams!

SWEET DREAMS

RELIEVE YOUR PAIN NOW!

• During REM sleep the body is almost totally paralyzed. Only the diaphragm, intestines, heart, blood and eyes are not affected.

Over 80% of Patients Have Up To 95% Success Heal Chronic Pain & Underlying Cause

• When sleeping volunteers were awakened during REM sleep, they remembered their dream 80% of the time. But when awakened during non-REM sleep, they recalled their dreams only 11% of the time. • When a stimulus was provided during the dream, it would often be worked into the dream. In one study, a few drops of water were sprayed into the dreamer's face. One subject had been dreaming he was acting in a play, when suddenly a hole opened up in the roof and the rain came through. About 40% of subjects reported dreaming about the spray of water. But only 23% incorporated a flash of light into their dream, and 9% incorporated a bell tone.

MRI review and consultation

• Five minutes after the end of the dream, 50% of the content is forgotten, and after ten minutes about 90% is forgotten. • Our brain waves are more active when we are dreaming than when we are awake. Blood flow to the brain increases during dreaming. • We usually spend more than two hours each night dreaming. We dream at least four to six times a night.

DREAMS (continued):

• Babies in the womb dream. Babies born prematurely will spend 10% more time dreaming than full-term babies. • People never snore while they're dreaming. People never sleepwalk when they’re dreaming. • It’s not uncommon for deaf people to use sign language in their sleep • Those born blind experience dreams involving things such as emotion, sound, and smell rather than sight. They dream without experiencing rapid eye movement. • Chronic use of barbiturates or alcohol can lead to nightmares, especially after their use is discontinued. The same sleeping pills that people take to regulate their sleep can cause profoundly disturbed sleep. • The continuous brain recordings that led to the discovery of REM sleep were not done until 1953, partly because the scientists involved were concerned about wasting paper. The paper needed to do an EEG of just one night's sleep was about half a mile long. Today the information is digitized so no paper is needed.

• In one experiment, monkeys were strapped into chairs in front of a video screen and taught that they must repeatedly press a bar in front of them whenever a certain image appeared on the screen. If they didn't, they would receive a shock. After several days of intense training which included sleep deprivation, the monkeys were allowed to fall asleep, still strapped to the chair, while their sleep was monitored. Not long after entering the REM dream stage, the animals began rapidly pressing the bar in front of them as they dreamed about the video screen.

• Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a story called "The Traveling Companion" and sent it to an editor. The editor rejected the story saying, "This is an ingenious piece of work but your plot is weak." Stevenson was at a loss to figure out how to improve the tale. Then one night he re-read the story before falling asleep. In a dream he had that night, he saw his story being acted out, with a different plot twist. When he awoke, he wrote down the details of the dream and then re-worked the story. The result was "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde."

IT’S A FACT

• Rudyard Kipling once had a dream in which he saw himself at a formal function in a big hall with rough stone flooring. There was a crowd of people around him and his view was obstructed by a fat man in front of him. A man touched him on the sleeve and said, "May I have a word with you?" Then he awoke. It was six weeks later when this dream was fulfilled down to the last detail when Kipling attended an official gathering. Although the man who wanted to speak to him had nothing consequential to say, Kipling was amazed at the fulfillment of the dream.

• Vitamin B complex and St. John’s Wort have been shown to produce more vivid dreams.

DREAMING UP AN ANSWER • Making lead shot for shotguns was difficult and time-consuming in the 1800s. Lead was rolled into sheets and the sheets were chopped into bits, or it was drawn into wire and cut into pieces. The resulting shot was expensive and of poor quality. James Watt, inventor of the first practical steam engine, had a recurring dream one week. In it, he seemed to be in a heavy rainstorm but instead of water drops, he was being pelted with tiny lead pellets that rolled around on the ground. Intrigued by the dream, Watt experimented by dropping molten lead from the top of a church tower into a water-filled moat. When he recovered the pellets he found that they were perfectly round. To this day, lead shot is made by the process Watt dreamed up. (cont’d)

ANIMAL DREAMS • Nearly all mammals have true REM sleep. Dolphins and anteaters are the only mammals who do not have REM sleep. However, with dolphins, one half of the brain will show a typical sleep EEG, while the other half has a normal waking EEG. During the following sleep cycle, the brain halves will be reversed. • The opossum dreams more than man. A newborn kitten, puppy, rat, or hamster experiences only REM sleep, while a newborn guinea pig (which is much more developed at birth) has almost no REM sleep at all. Some birds and even fish have been shown to have the rapid eye movement characteristic of the state of dreaming.

• Elias Howe was trying to invent a sewing machine, but he was having a major problem. He couldn't figure out where to locate the eye of the needle. The eye of the needle is always located in the end of the needle furthest from the point, but all his designs failed to work properly. He was at wits end and rapidly running out of money when he fell asleep one night and had a strange dream. In the dream he was being led to his execution. The king had ordered him killed because he could not design a sewing machine. He was surrounded by guards who were all armed with spears that were pierced at the head. When Howe awoke, he realized this was the solution to the problem. In short order he had invented a sewing machine whose needle had the eye at the head, now the universal design.

Amazing Animals

FROGS • “Amphibian” comes from the Greek words meaning “two lives” since the frog can live both in the water and on the land. • Frogs always croak, right? Wrong. The European tree frog sounds like a quacking duck. Another kind of frog sounds like a cat meowing. • Frogs have no ribs. • A frog closes its eyes by pulling the eyeballs deeper into the sockets, which serves to close the eyelids. • A frog's tongue is attached to the front of its mouth to give a longer reach. • Do frogs have teeth? Just two tiny teeth in the upper jaw, which keep prey from getting away. • A frog does not need to drink water because it absorbs water through its skin. • A frog’s thigh, shin, and foot are of nearly equal length, to make jumping easier. • A bullfrog with a six-inch (15 cm) body can leap ten times its own body length. • Tadpoles are generally born being one sex or the other, but environmental influences can change the frog’s sex. If food is scarce or the temperature is not right, the transformation of female tadpoles into male frogs keeps the population down until conditions improve in the pond. • If you pick up a frog while you have insect repellent on your hands, the frog will absorb it through the skin and be-

come very sick. • Handling a toad does not cause warts. • Some frogs have lived for 20 years. One toad lived 36 years. • Frogs don’t always lay their eggs in ponds: • The Malaysian hill frog lives high in the mountains where there are few ponds, so it lays its eggs in damp moss that hangs from trees. The tadpoles develop into frogs there. • One kind of poison dart frog lays eggs on moist vegetation, and then watches over the eggs until the tadpoles hatch. Then the young crawl up on the backs of either parent and are literally glued in place by a mucous secretion. They are attached there for more than a week, until the parent can find a pool to release them. The water loosens the mucous bond, and the young swim free. • Bullfrogs can lay 20,000 eggs at a time. On the other hand, some kinds of dart-poison frogs will lay a single tiny egg in each of the miniature “ponds” that forms when rainwater collects in the base of a leaf. The mother frog will also lay a number of unfertilized eggs next to the fertilized egg so the tadpole will have something to eat when it hatches. • The eggs of the horned marsupial frog are placed on the mother’s back, where a pouch of skin grows around them to protect them. Tadpoles of the frog hatch and develop in that pouch, completing their development into frogs without ever seeing water.

HOLLYWOOD — When Bradley Cooper was shooting "American Sniper," his director, Clint Eastwood, told him about his problems trying to schedule Beyonce to film his planned remake of "A Star Is Born," because of her concert appearances. He finally gave up and suggested Bradley should take it on as his first directing project. Bradley mulled it over and decided to look for a female singing star to fill the shoes of Judy Garland (in the 1954 version) and Barbra Streisand (in the 1976 remake). He approached Lady GaGa, and she said "yes." Not only is he set to direct and star in it, but he's got a release date from Warner Brothers — Sept. 28, 2018. *** When The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences re-signed with ABC to broadcast the Oscar Awards until 2028, it was with the proviso that it take a backseat in decision-making and not interfere. ABC was hot for Jimmy Kimmel to host, but The Academy insists that the hosts be movie people. They're considering using multiple hosts, and Matt Damon, Andy Samberg, Mike Meyers, Tom Hanks and Justin Timberlake are on the short list. That should give the Academy more diversity. The awards air Feb. 26.

destroying cities, due in April 2018. Wonder why Meryl Streep hasn't announced any new projects? Could it be her last film, "Florence Foster Jenkins," with Hugh Grant, which cost $29 million but earned only $44 million, has made her more cautious? Burt Reynolds will be back on the big screen, playing a real-estate mogul, with the Dec. 2 release of the crime/ thriller "Pocket Listing," with Rob Lowe. The film, completed in 2015, had problems getting distribution until now. Also hitting screens the same day is "The Comedian," starring Robert De Niro and a great cast, including Leslie Mann, Cloris Leachman, Danny DeVito, Edie Falco and Harvey Keitel. The following week we'll see Oscar-winner Natalie Portman as Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy in "Jackie," with Peter Sarsgaard and John Hurt, and "Office Christmas Party," with Jason Bateman, Olivia Nunn, Kate McKinnon and Jennifer Aniston. Every year I try to avoid using the "C" word for as long as I can, but without using it now, that last film would be called just "Office Party." (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Viola Davis Q: Oh, my gosh! I can't believe the cliffhanger for "How to Get Away with Murder"! Please tell me I don't have to wait until next fall to see how this all pans out. — Nancy F., via email A: You won't have to wait TOO long for "HTGAWM" to return. Right now, the show is on winter hiatus and will return to ABC on Thursday, Jan. 19, at 10/9c. SPOILER ALERT: I can't wait to see the aftermath of Wes' (played by Alfred Enoch) grisly death, discover who killed him and placed him in Annalise's (Viola Davis) house before caught it fire, and see the events that led up to poor Waitlist's demise. I also am thrilled to report that Jan. 19 marks the return of "Scandal," which makes its sixth-season premiere right beforehand at 9/8c. You might recall that "Scandal" was scheduled for a midseason debut this year to accommodate star Kerry Washington's real-life pregnancy. However, this does mean that it will be a slightly shorter season — 16 episodes instead of 22. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, though: To me, it just means that every episode will have that much more bang for the buck, and I can't wait! *** Q: Will "The Path" be back for another season? If so, can you give me any hints as to what we can expect? — Paula T., Birmingham, Alabama A: Hulu did indeed order a second season of this thrilling drama, and starts streaming the first episode Jan. 25. "The Path" follows the Meyerist Movement as its followers try to make sense of Dr. Meyer's (Keir Dullea) myste-

rious departure. Tormented by strange visions, Eddie (Aaron Paul) struggles with a new life in the secular world, while Sarah (Michelle Monaghan), despite her skepticism of Cal (Hugh Dancy), now stands beside him as Co-Guardian of the Light. When Sarah finally learns of Cal's dark past, she buries the truth for the betterment of the Movement. Cal and Sarah, now closer than ever, strive to atone for their misdeeds, while Eddie, confronted with the meaning of his visions, discovers the truth of Dr. Meyer's departure. *** Q: Is it true that "The Lion King" is being remade? Why? The movie is perfect as is. — Kelli Y., via email A: Actor-director-producer Jon Favreau, who brought us the live-action remake of "The Jungle Book" this past April (and it was recently announced that he is making a sequel), is at the helm of the live-action remake of "The Lion King." Walt Disney Studios has stated that the reimagining is on the fast track to production and will include the songs from the original — written by Elton John, Tim Rice and Hans Zimmer — including the Oscar-winning "Can You Feel the Love Tonight." background. Even the library might need help keeping books shelved. * Look in the newspaper for free holiday performances and take a friend along. Put an ad in the paper offering pet care. Many people don't want to board their cats or dogs. Offer to lead a singalong at a rehab center or children's hospital wing. Load up the car with friends who don't drive and go see the Christmas lights.

ALONE FOR THE HOLIDAYS What are your plans for the holidays? Big celebration with lots of family flying in from many locations? Having holiday dinners at the home of a child who's now taken over those duties? Jetting off on a lavish vacation? Or will you be alone over the holidays? Some of us dread the holidays, not only because we'll be alone, but because they're not what they used to be ... children grown and gone, grandchildren too far away. The key for many of us to get through the holidays is to stay busy. Here are a few ideas: * Check the calendar at the local senior center and mark the events you'd like to attend. Especially consider going on any trip they've organized. Daytrips can be a great break, and you don't have to drive. * Make calls now about volunteering, before all the positions are filled. Santa fund organizations often need people to deliver children's gifts if the parents have no car, or you can sort and wrap toys. Many churches host free holiday dinners and need cooks or servers. Does the humane society need dog walkers to fill in? The hospital might need extra help, even if you don't have a medical

* Don't pack every day with nonstop activities, however. Take some time to yourself to rejuvenate, kick back, read, snack on holiday treats or watch movies on TV.

as well as grits; pasta, beans, rice and single-serve containers of macaroni and cheese; coffee or tea; rolls and bread; fresh poultry, dairy and drinks. Do you receive Meals on Wheels? Ask for help in a more private way by talking to your delivery person about how and where to access more food from a food pantry. You also can contact the Council on Aging (www.ncoa. org), a senior center or local churches to ask about food banks in your area. Transportation might even be provided if you don't drive. Remember: The point of adequate nutrition is to stay healthy. The food is out there. You just need to accept what you need. And with cold weather, we all need more calories. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Did you get plenty to eat over Thanksgiving? Many seniors didn't. Studies have revealed that far too many seniors (and young families, as well) are too embarrassed to ask for help, especially when it involves accepting that help in a public place, such as a food pantry. If your situation is to the point where you're going hungry, there's no need to be ashamed of going to a food pantry. The folks who run them are very helpful and nice. In some places you'll be given a pre-boxed load of groceries, while in others you'll be able to go down the aisles with a cart and pick out what you need and want. There might be a sign above each section telling you to take one or two or three of each item. If a staff member smiles and whispers for you to take a couple more, do that. At a food pantry, you're likely to receive canned fruits, vegetables, meats, tuna and stews; hot and cold cereals,

WHY IS ALCOHOL BANNED WITH ANTIBIOTICS? DEAR DR. ROACH: I'm confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? — K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn't be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol. In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured. Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That's true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet.

It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy. Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I'm wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more "stretchy" are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? — B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day. Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments. This can change your gait and cause abnor-

HIGH-PROTEIN INTAKE INCREASES RISK FOR HEART FAILURE

Physical fitness among patients with type 2 diabetes improves with a plant-based diet, according to a study published in Nutrients. Researchers compared a plantbased diet to a conventional diabetes diet on 74 people with type 2 diabetes who engaged in an exercise regimen three times a week for one hour. Physical fitness was measured by spiroergometry which measured maximal performance and lung capacity when riding a stationary bike. Although the energy intake was comparable in both groups, physical fitness increased more in the group following a plant-based diet. Researchers suggest clinicians recommend plant-based diets as part of an effective exercise program for patients with diabetes.

High amounts of protein increases risk for heart failure in women, according to data presented this week at the American Heart Association’s annual meeting. Researchers tracked and compared different types of protein intake for 103,878 women from the Women’s Health Initiative. Those who consumed the most protein overall increased their risk for heart failure, compared with those who consumed the least. In addition, an increase in vegetable protein lowered the risk for heart failure, suggesting the link is with animal protein specifically. Read more about the harmful effects of too much protein here.

mal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis. Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven't heard of, but it is an interesting thought. For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A HEALTHY GUT REDUCES DIABETES RISK Eating patterns high in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains can enhance the health of microbiota (gut bacteria), according to an article published in Diabetes Spectrum. Western diets high in fatty meats and low in fiber have a negative effect on gut bacterial health, increasing inflammation, obesity, and diabetes risk. To improve gut health, consume plant-based food sources of prebiotics, probiotics, and 25 to 38 grams of fiber per day. Prebiotics including leeks, asparagus, garlic, onions, whole wheat, oats, soybeans, and bananas, and probiotic sources include sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, soy sauce, miso, and water kefir. Jardine M. Mayweather is the greatest defensive boxer who ever lived. I've watched thousands of fights, and I have never seen anyone protect himself any better. Ali was harder to hit, and he moved around the ring better, but Mayweather's ability to fend off blows like a horse flicking off flies with his tail is unmatched across any era. The problem is that his style is epically boring, and as boxing continues to look for its next ratings savior, he's not helping.

In the halcyon days of the 1970s and '80s, a car company then-called Datsun used to saturate the airwaves during televised sporting events. Famous for its sporty "Z" cars (the 240Z, 260Z and 280ZX), Datsun extolled the gas-saving virtues of its brand, cheerfully urging would-be drivers to "put your money in the bank, not in the tank." That admonition would work well in today's world of boxing, too. Last year saw the passing of the "Greatest of All Time" (GOAT) and the continued win streak of "The Best Ever" (TBE). While Muhammad Ali can no longer reap the dividends from his illustrious career, Floyd "Money" Mayweather is still in fighting shape at 39 years of age, and he is in possession of what is really the sole marketing gimmick left in professional boxing — an unbeaten record of 49-0. If you were a betting man, you would think that an ego-driven boxer who has never really been challenged or hit hard more than once outside of the "Sugar" Shane Mosley fight, would like the all-time unbeaten boxing record all to himself. He's tied with Rocky Marciano, but your bettor's hunch just may prove to be correct: Mayweather himself has trademarked the term "TBE 50-0." So conditions appear to right.

Also, he is game to fight Mayweather. Let's face it, Mayweather has nobody to face who would command the nine-figure payout he is demanding. Nobody is going to fall for another pay-per-view disaster like Mayweather-Pacquio II. A fight against McGregor would more than live up to the hype, if only to showcase the merits of boxing as a fighting style as it continues to lose mindshare to MMA. Also, it would be an easy fight for Mayweather. Vegas oddsmakers already have the fight at -2250/+980 in favor of Mayweather (meaning you'd have to wager $2,250 on Mayweather to win $100, $100 on McGregor to win $980), but you don't need to be an expert to call this one. Keep your money in the bank — McGregor won't tank, but Mayweather has plenty of gas left in his. It would be the greatest upset in sports history and certainly worth watching ... that much you can bet. Let's get it on. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. Answers 1. Danny Tartabull, in 1991 versus Oakland. 2. Willie Wilson (1985, Kansas City) and Lance Johnson (1996, New York Mets) each hit 21 in a season. 3. Zack Mills, who passed for 7,212 yards (2001-04). 4. Kobe Bryant, during the 2006-07 season (he had three such games). 5. Henrik Sedin, Corey Perry, Evgeni Malkin, Carey Price and Patrick Kane. 6. Juan Agudelo was 17 years, 359 days old when he scored a goal in 2010. 7. Three times, with Norton winning one of them.

PUT YOUR MONEY IN THE BANK

Enter Conor McGregor, the baddest man on the planet. He holds two UFC belts in two different weight classes and has a record of 21-3, which translated to a boxing record would be more like 100-3 (factor in that MMA fighters use more of their body to strike, and the sheer overall violence). With the loss of Rhonda Rousey, he is the most visible and popular champion in the fight game.

I'm glad both cats found loving homes and new families. Thank you for sharing them. It's rare for feral cats to be coaxed inside and become fully domesticated cats that are comfortable around humans. But for those that do find a home — even if they never quite cross the threshold of the house — life can be happier and more rewarding for them as well as the humans who care for them.

TALES OF FERAL CATS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I wanted to add to your recent columns about feral cats. Maybe some can't be tamed, but my friends and family would disagree. I recently visited with friends in North Carolina and met their beautiful cat, "Stormy." Their story is this: They had been feeding this feral cat for some time outside, and of course, he wouldn't come near them. Then one night they heard a howling outside. Looking out, they saw a mountain lion or panther, whatever they call them there, threatening Stormy. They opened the door, and Stormy came in, and never went outside again. Another story I have is of a feral cat that was "adopted" by my son's chickens! He has six chickens in his backyard in Florida, and one day someone dropped off a very young kitten. He got into the coop, but instead of running or attacking, the kitten assumed those chickens were his parents! Now a full-grown cat, he remains mostly feral and won't come inside my son's house, but he hangs out in the chicken coop daily with his new family. Hope your readers enjoy the stories! — John S., via email

HOLIDAY TEMPTATIONS CAN SPELL TROUBLE

DEAR RELIVED MOM: It certainly can! Thank you for sharing your experience. Keeping the emergency veterinarian's number close by — added to a mobile phone's contact list, written next to other key numbers on the refrigerator — is very important during holidays, when many vets' offices are closed. And of course, because holiday gatherings can be distracting, it may be best to keep pets in a secure, comfortable area away from loud noise and tempting foods. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I know you warn people every holiday season about the dangers of their pets ingesting certain foods, like chocolate, onions and grapes. I wanted to share my experience from last Thanksgiving, when my terrier, "Blake," sneaked into the kitchen and started eating leftovers off of plates piled on the counter. We were alerted by the crash of several plates onto the floor. Fortunately, we stopped Blake from trying to lick up spilled food amid the shattered dishes, but he had eaten a lot of high-fat foods — stuffing, gravy, you name it — that were loaded with spices, onions and other ingredients. I kept a close eye on Blake over the next several hours, and made sure the emergency vet's number was on hand. Sure enough, Blake started looking lethargic and vomited; we put him in the car and drove right to the vet. Because I called ahead, they were able to treat him immediately, and he recovered without any lasting problems. I hope my experience can help other pet owners as the busy, distracting holiday season descends on us. — Relieved Mom in Pittsburgh

Insomnia is almost twice as common in women as it is in men. • When deprived of sleep, senses diminish, reactions slow, motor speed decreases, and the memory fails. The body temperature drops, and hallucinations and/or psychosis and paranoia may result if sleeplessness is continued. The body will be completely restored to normal after a period of sleep. • In sleep-deprived people, it is most difficult for them to stay awake between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. • In a sleep lab, volunteers who got eight hours of sound sleep were tested for reaction time on a number of different tasks. The following night they were shorted on their sleep. When the tests were repeated, it was not surprising that their marks fell as their reaction time increased. Following a normal 8-hour sleep, reaction times returned to normal. The following night, they were allowed to sleep more than 8 hours. Researchers were surprised to see that their reaction time decreased after over-sleeping just as it had when they under-slept.

Most first editions I've seen are priced in the $5,000 to $10,000 range, depending on condition and if it has its cover. If you have a first edition and wish to sell, you should contact a good rare book dealer.

• Each year, sleep-related errors and accidents cost U.S. businesses an estimated $56 billion, cause nearly 25,000 deaths, and result in 2.5 million disabling injuries. • The record for the longest period without sleep was set by Maureen Weston who stayed awake for 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon. She reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech, memory problems, and concentration lapses, but made a full recovery after the contest ended. “The Guinness Book of Records” stopped awarding records in this category to discourage people from engaging in dangerous behavior.
