• In 1857, James Lord Pierpont was the music director at a Savannah, Georgia church when he composed a happy little winter tune he entitled “One-Horse Open Sleigh,” later known as “Jingle Bells.” Just a few years later, he was composing “We Conquer or Die” and “Strike for the South,” Civil War marching songs. Pierpont wasn’t a native Southerner, and was in fact the son of a staunch abolitionist from Boston.

• “Jingle Bells” was used as a part of a practical joke played by Gemini 6 astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford during their December, 1965 spaceflight. They radioed back to Mission Control that they had sighted some type of flying object that looked “like a satellite…a command module and eight smaller modules in front” with a pilot “wearing a red suit.” This was followed up by their rendition of “Jingle Bells,” accompanied by a harmonica and sleigh bells they had smuggled aboard the craft. That Hohner’s harmonica and those bells can be seen at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, displayed as the first musical instruments played in space. • Two record producers from Denmark came up with the idea of splicing together recordings of dogs barking into the pattern of songs. In 1955, the two used five dogs – Dolly, Pearl, Pussy, Caesar, and King – to create The Singing Dogs performing “Jingle Bells,” a rendition that has become a well-known holiday favorite of most radio stations.

million copies. Unfortunately, because May was an employee of the store, Ward’s owned the copyright, and it was several years before May convinced them to allow him the rights. In 1949, May’s brother-in-law penned one of the most loved holiday tunes of all time, based on the story. Cowboy singer Gene Autry recorded the song and sold over two million copies the first year.

HOLIDAY MUSIC (continued):

• “Silent Nightâ€? comes to us from the German language, from words written by Father Josef Mohn, a priest in a tiny Austrian village. “Stille Nachtâ€? was set to music in 1818 by the church organist Franz Gruber, who wrote the music for guitar, since the church’s pipe organ was in disrepair. • Written in 1864, “Up on the Housetopâ€? is the second-oldest secular Christmas song, after “Jingle Bells.â€? It was composed by Benjamin Hanby, who wrote 80 other songs, before perishing from tuberculosis at age 33. It seems that Hanby was inspired by Clement Moore’s poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas,â€? the first piece of writing that spoke of Santa’s sleigh and his reindeer landing on rooftops. The most well-known recording of this song was by cowboy singer Gene Autry in 1953. • Written in 1943 in the midst of World War II, “I’ll Be Home for Christmasâ€? was written to honor GI’s serving overseas and their families. Composer Kimball Gannon sang the song for singer Bing Crosby while the two were playing golf to get his opinion. Crosby recorded the tune, which was a chart-topper for eleven weeks and became Crosby’s fifth gold record. When Gannon died in 1974, he bequeathed the rights to the song to the American Heart Association, which has benefited from the gift since that time. • A 34-year-old copyrighter working for the department store chain Montgomery Ward in 1939 was the creator of one of the season’s most beloved characters, Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer. Robert May was given the assignment of coming up with a story for a holiday promotional booklet for distribution to customers to replace the coloring books they had circulated in previous years. May, who had been teased as a child for his shyness and short stature, used the same theme for his rednosed reindeer, who was made fun of for being different. Montgomery Ward sold nearly 2.5 million copies that year. When they reissued it in 1946, sales were 3.5

• The name Johnny Marks might not be familiar to you, but you’ve certainly heard his compositions hundreds of times. Johnny Marks was the brother-in-law of Robert May, and the one who set “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeerâ€? to music. But that wasn’t his only Christmas song by any means. Marks also gave us “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas,â€? “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,â€? “The Night Before Christmas Song,â€? “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,â€? and “When Santa Claus Gets Your Letter,â€? among many others. • The English melody “Greensleevesâ€? was composed in 1580, but it wasn’t until 1865 that William Dix wrote the poem “The Manger Throne,â€? which was fitted into the “Greensleevesâ€? tune. We know this Christmas carol as “What Child Is This?â€?. • Composed by Irving Berlin in 1940, “White Christmasâ€? made its debut in 1941 on the NBC radio program “Kraft Music Hall,â€? sung by Bing Crosby. Crosby didn’t record the song until the following May, and the song was used in the movie “Holiday Innâ€? later that year. The song was given the Oscar for the Best Song of 1942. It’s the most-recorded holiday song, with more than 500 versions over the years, selling more than 100 million copies around the world. • “Carol of the Bellsâ€? is a Ukrainian folk song originally titled “Shchedryk.â€? It tells the story of a swallow flying into a home to sing of a bountiful year that will follow. It was first performed in Ukraine on New Year’s Eve, 1915, and in the United States, at Carnegie Hall in 1921. In January, 1921, the composer of the song, Mykola Leontovych, was murdered by a Soviet state security agent for his participation in the Ukrainian independence movement. • “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinchâ€? was written in 1966 as part of the Dr. Seuss TV special “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.â€? Dr. Seuss wrote the lyrics to this classic. Thurl Ravenscroft was the vocalist for the song. You may not remember Ravenscroft’s name, but his voice is most recognizable as Tony the Tiger in ads for Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, when he growls, “They’re g-r-reat!â€?

NEW YEAR By Lucie Winborne

The biggest party night of the year is fast approaching, and with the holiday hijinks also can come, unfortunately, some environmentally unfriendly waste. Frankly, most of us usually are too busy having fun to think much about that, but if you'd like to make this New Year's Eve a healthier one for our planet even as you celebrate, here are some helpful ideas: * Consider carpooling. If you're celebrating with friends, why not share a vehicle? Not only will you save on fuel and reduce emissions, but you'll stay safer with more likelihood of a designated driver. And don't rule out public transportation, especially as some cities offer free rides in the evening and early-morning hours. * Cut down on the paper. Hosting an event at home? Instead of buying cheap paper goods such as hats and banners that will just end up in tomorrow's trash, opt for ones you can store and reuse next year. Use regular glasses, plates and utensils instead of the disposable kind, or a biodegradable variety. You can even make your own noisemakers with items you already have around the house. And how about some useful party favors such as reusable water bottles? * Candles, anyone? Sure, glittery disco balls and strobe lights are flashily fun, but how about setting a more low-key mood with some soy candles? They're a great way to ring in the new year with a hint of romance. * Get crafty with bottles. After the corks have been popped and the contents are quaffed, you can either drop those empty bottles in a recycling bin or put them to new use as a flower vase, salad-dressing container or candleholder. For an even more creative touch, decoupage them with anything from rhinestones to lace to what-have-you. * Serve earth-friendly edibles. Whether you're dining out or in, you can make healthy and responsible food choices by going vegetarian with local seasonal produce and avoiding pre-packaged appetizers — or even charm guests with an edible centerpiece. * Avoid one-time outfits. It's natural to want to glam it up on Dec. 31, but you don't have to spend a fortune on something that will sit in your closet the rest of the time. * And then there's always the quiet night in. Sometimes ringing in the new year can be just as fun and meaningful with loved ones at home ... less noise, less chance of a hangover. Bring out a deck of cards or some board games, or use the time as a family to reflect on all you experienced and accomplished during the outgoing year as you prepare new plans and goals for the coming one.

CHRISTMAS BIRDS Tidbits is “in tune” with holiday songs this week, investigating the variety of birds sung about in “The 12 Days of Christmas.” • Sources differ as to the first publication of this familiar Christmas song, with some experts claiming it was 1868, while others say it was published in The Nursery Rhymes of England in 1842, and still others putting the date around 1780. • The partridge in the pear tree is most likely the red-legged partridge, a member of the pheasant family, which has been a traditional sporting bird in England for hundreds of years. • The European turtledove is native to England and would have been found in abundance there in the 1800s. The name given to this bird has nothing to do with turtles, but rather refers to its gentle purring song, a vibrating “turrr, turrr.” Over the course of the 12 days, the recipient would have received 22 of these dainty birds, a species that mates for life. • The Faverolles is a French breed of chicken developed in that country in the 1860s. They have feathered feet, with five toes per foot rather than a chicken’s usual four. They are a gentle breed, which makes them a popular pet for children. Faverolles owners can expect them to lay four eggs a week. • What exactly are those four “calling birds”? We might interpret that as “song birds.” But it’s more likely that the original meaning was “colly birds.” The meaning of the word “colly” is “black as coal,” making it likely that this gift is the common European Blackbird, a

member of the thrush family who has a yellow eye-ring and an orange-yellow bill. • On the sixth day of Christmas, geese are added to the mix, probably the Greylag goose, considered the ancestor of most domesticated geese. In fact, they were one of the first animals to be domesticated, some 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt. These particular geese are a large bird, up to 36 inches (91 cm) long with an average weight of 7.3 lbs. (3.3 kg). They mate for life. • Swans are the largest members of the duck and goose family, weighing up to 33 lbs. (15 kg), and reaching a length of 5 feet (1.5 m). Their wingspan is an amazing 10 feet (3.1 m), which aids them in their flight speed of up to 60 mph (96.5 km/hr). They are also very strong birds, and have been known to break a human’s leg when provoked. A typical swan has over 25,000 feathers covering its body. Like the turtledove and Greylag goose, swans mate for life. • Do you know your swan terminology? A baby swan is a cygnet, a male is a cob, and a female is called a pen. The name for a group is a bevy or lamentation. If you’re afraid of swans, you’re said to have kiknophobia or cygnophobia. • It seems odd that the author of the lyrics spoke of so many birds, but inserted “five gold rings” in the midst of them. Actually, the gifts on the first seven days of Christmas were all birds, with the gold rings referring to the rings of the ring-necked pheasants. • How many total birds did the true love give? Assuming that the gold rings represent pheasants, the total number of birds would be 224.

HOLLYWOOD -- Meryl Streep, who won Oscars for "Kramer vs Kramer" (1980), "Sophie's Choice" (1983) and "The Iron Lady" (2011), just received word from The Hollywood Foreign Press that she'll be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award at its Golden Globes ceremony on Jan. 8. In addition to the three Oscar winners, Streep has won Golden Globes for "The French Lieutenant's Woman" (1981), "Adaption" (2002), "Angels in America" (2003), "The Devil Wears Prada" (2006) and "Julie & Julia" (2009). Streep is only 67, but many stars feel this award is the industry's way of saying they're at the end of their career. That may have been true for Barbara Stanwyck, 78; Laurence Olivier, 75; Robert Mitchum, 74; Henry Fonda, 74; Gene Hackman, 72; Alfred Hitchcock, 72; Anthony Quinn, 71; Cecil DeMille (the first recipient), 71; and Maurice Chevalier, 70, but Judy Garland, 39, went on to a huge singing career, while Charlton Heston, 43, made 27 more films. Jody Foster, honored four years ago, at 50, is still going strong with "Elysium" (2013) and film directing.

Streep, far from done, next stars in "Mary Poppins Returns," with Emily Blunt as Mary Poppins and Lin-Manuel Miranda (of "Hamilton" fame) playing a Dick Van Dyketype character. It's set for a Christmas 2018 release. *** Lin Manuel Miranda, the toast of Broadway, is now under contract to Disney. In addition to doing "Mary Poppins Returns," he wrote the music and sang on the soundtrack of "Moana" and is set to moonlight, from Disney, in "Speech & Debate" as a genie. Jessica Rothe, who stars with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in the new hit musical film "La La Land," is set to star in a musical remake of the 1983 Nicolas Cage film

"Valley Girl" (the original cost $350,000 to make and grossed $17 million). Cage will next be seen in the sci-fi film "The Humanity Bureau," coming in 2017. Bradley Cooper, hard at work on directing his first film, "A Star is Born," with Lady GaGa, will next star in "Atlantic Wall," about an American paratrooper operating behind enemy lines before D-Day. It's due in 2018. *** The success of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," has made TV magazines and news shows speculate that a sequel is a forgone conclusion, but insiders at Disney say there won't be one because "Rogue One" is a prequel and a stand-alone "Star Wars" story, and the sequel was already made as "Star Wars: A New Hope." I usually end with a joke, but the recent election was no laughing matter. Enjoy this holiday season -- it may be a very different world next year. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: One of my favorite books of the past few years is "Big Little Lies" by Liane Moriarty. My sister told me it's going to be adapted into a movie. Is that true? — Linda W., via email A: The popular 2014 novel is indeed being adapted ... however, it will be a seven-episode limited series that will air on HBO. David E. Kelley — who created "Ally McBeal," "Picket Fences," "Chicago Hope" and "The Practice," among many others — is behind the creation of this sure-to-be-another-hit series. Aside from the excellent source material and brilliance of its creator, the series packs quite a punch with star power: Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Shailene Woodley (who play the lead characters), along with Alexander Skarsgard, Laura Dern, Adam Scott and Jeffrey Nordling. Hot on the heels of the extraordinary and critically acclaimed "Westworld," HBO hopes to reprise its success with "Big Little Lies." Look for its premiere on Feb. 19. *** Q: I know I am late to the party, but I have been binge-watching "Sons of Anarchy" like there's no tomorrow. Is there any chance we'll get more seasons of this awesome show? С Jerry T., Biloxi, Mississippi A: Sort of. FX recently announced that it will shoot a pilot called "Mayans MC," which will be a sequel to "Sons." Kurt Sutter has written and will direct the pilot, with FX releasing this tidbit: "The drama will be set in a post-Jax Teller world, where EZ Reyes — a prospect in the Mayan MC charter on the California/Mexico border — struggles with his desire for vengeance against the cartel and his need for respect from the women he loves." And no,

"women" is not a typo. Sounds like he has his hands full, and fans will get their fill of more motorcycle madness and mayhem. *** Q: Earlier this year, I got hooked on "The Artful Detective." Will there be more episodes? — Marty F., via email A: Ovation has announced that your favorite turn-of-the20th-century detective will return for an 18-episode 10th season. Set in Toronto at the dawn of the 20th century, "The Artful Detective," as you know, is a one-hour drama series that explores the world of Det. William Murdoch (played by Yannick Bisson), a methodical and dashing detective who pioneers innovative forensic techniques to solve some of the city's most gruesome murders. As season 10 of the acclaimed series begins — on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PST — Det. Murdoch is proceeding with plans to build a house and create a happy life for himself and his wife, Dr. Julia Ogden (Helene Joy). Julia is introducing her newly arrived friend Lady Suzanne Atherly (Samantha Bond of "Downton Abbey") and her daughter Elizabeth to Toronto society at a debutante ball. Unfortunately, the elegant event turns deadly when one of the ladies vying to marry Toronto's most eligible bachelor is murdered. ANSWER: Tree-nut allergies, like all allergies, vary in severity from mild to life-threatening. Allergies to tree nuts (these include walnuts, cashews, almonds and others) are common, are more likely to be severe, and tend to persist throughout lifetime. People with one tree-nut allergy may have others, and about 30 percent to 40 percent also may be allergic to peanuts (despite their being legumes, they share enough characteristics for co-allergic reactions). Peanut and tree-nut allergies appear to be increasing in prevalence over time. The mainstay of treatment is avoiding the allergen, which requires constant vigilance, careful reading of nutritional labels and a plan for treatment in case of ingestion, such as an epinephrine auto-injector. Only about 15 to 20 percent of younger children will develop tolerance to ("outgrow") their allergy; an allergy that develops later in life usually is life-long. Your allergist can do skin testing to see if the allergy is resolving. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I'm a retired ob-gyn and am married to a practicing MD. I'm writing you today about autism and its use as a diagnosis. My view is that each individual is unique, mentally and physically. While autism may be one way to describe a personality, each person must deal with the world on its terms, not because of a diagnosis. I personally believe I am a variant of Asperger's, but who knows? I don't qualify as an Asperger's if given a test prepared by psychologists/psychiatrists. Yet, I have had many life experiences that are best explained by an Asperger's diagnosis. What are your thoughts on Asperger's syndrome? — A.G.

When is the last time you looked at the bottom of your shoes? If it's been more than a year, you might be surprised. You could discover uneven wear or spots that are nearly worn through. Both of those can cause balance problems and lead to slips or falls. The fix, however, isn't as simple as going out to buy another pair of whatever you're currently wearing. If, like some of us, you haven't bought new shoes in many years, you'll be surprised at how your feet have changed and what's available now. If you have any problems with your feet or don't know what type of shoe to buy, your first step should be to ask your doctor for a referral to a podiatrist. There, you'll be examined and have a shoe type suggested.

ANSWER: Since I recently published a letter by an adult who believed he was autistic despite never having received a diagnosis, I have had several letters like this. Autism, including its variant Asperger syndrome, is a spectrum of illnesses that share deficits in social interaction, communication and stereotyped, repetitive behaviors. In Asperger syndrome, there is no clinically significant delay in language and intellectual development. I certainly agree with you that each person is unique and that the label of a psychiatric condition, such as autism, bipolar or a personality disorder, has only limited usefulness. In the best case, it can give a person a way to start learning how to overcome challenges that similar people have faced. At worst, a label predisposes others to look at the person through a certain lens and to expect certain behaviors. I have had many patients with psychiatric diagnoses

ask me not to put that into their medical record, after having built up enough trust to share the diagnosis with me. People have had such negative experiences based on their diagnosis, their label, that I don't blame them for wanting to avoid being stereotyped. There is so much variation in all of these conditions — even in those of us considered neurologically typical — that we need to recognize the good and the bad side of making such a diagnosis. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. If you don't have a medical power of attorney, sign one. Consider whether to have your monthly bills paid automatically from your bank if you become unable to write checks.

When you go to buy shoes, shop at a regular shoe store where trained clerks will know how to measure and fit you for the right shoe. This is not the time to try to grab a bargain at a big-box store.

Or if we do, maybe their circumstances (or our relationship) won't allow them to step in and take care of us if we get into a health crisis. Here are steps to take now, to be ready for whatever the future might bring. * Don't let yourself become isolated. While it's often more comfortable to just stay home, get out. Go to class-

you're in the lead by one to three runs in the ninth and you have a multi-zillion dollar pitcher anxiously awaiting your call to the bullpen. Maybe the modern-day closer deserves some scorn. Statistics show that teams with a lead in the ninth inning almost always win, anyway. People really into statistics have concluded that a top-shelf reliever maybe wins an additional four games for a team. Aha! Right there, that should make the case. They're worth it because a win is a win. Many a team has lost the division by four games.

CLOSING TIME Every year, you are given a task. That task is a vote. While some would say the task is an easy one, you know better. For your Hall of Fame vote is all that stands between the chasm that divides the words "mediocre" and "legend." Some envy you. You are the baseball writers of America. You possess a talent, an ability that can elevate the mundane to the miraculous. But others despise you. When their heroes are overlooked, when their favorite players whom they watched 162 days and nights each year are deemed to be second rate, it seems to be an arrogant dismissal of what they and most everyone values the most: their time. Time was when a relief pitcher was considered somebody who couldn't cut the mustard and make the starting rotation. Of course, there also was a time when starting rotations consisted of two starters who had 30 complete games every few months and were allowed to openly spit on the baseballs. Those days are over, thankfully, and it's time for us to evolve further by appreciating the closer role in baseball. Many of you argue that the closer is a cop-out, a ploy managers use to save their skin more than they save games. After all, there's not much to think about when

But there's more to it than that. Do not mistake brevity for lack of worth. Yes, good starting pitchers eat up more than 200 innings each season, but why should that influence your vote for a closer? Let's say you're a season-ticket holder. You get to see your best starter maybe 15 times each year. Your closer? You see him whenever you're about to win — they're the ones who kept you in the seats, which not only justifies their salary (a team can't make money off of concessions when you're gone, after all), it justifies their importance. Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith, closers unfairly subjected to this closer discrimination, would appear in 70-80 games a season. They were like a warm, 98-mph hug. Think of it like your wife or husband, kids or partner, best mate, what have you. Would you rather see them 15 times a year for two hours a pop, or would you rather see them in 80 electrifying, 20-minute appearances over an extended period of time (five extra years if you're a lefty)? You already know the answer, and that's why you know it's time to open up the gates of the Hall for the overlooked men who spent their career awaiting a call, closing the door on their opponents. Make the call to the pen ... your pen. The closer's time has come. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW DOES YOUR PET HANDLE THE COLD? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: The other day, I watched a neighbor walk her small Pug on an icy sidewalk in 19-degree weather. Her dog wore a sweater but had no protection for its paws, and it was limping onto the pavement and then off onto the crusted snowpack to find somewhere to "go."

DOG'S NOSELICKING IS A COMMON PROBLEM DEAR PAW'S CORNER: After my dog 'Twitch' got out of the yard a couple of months ago, he came back with a big scratch on the tip of his nose. Since then every time it scabs over and starts to heal, he licks it with his tongue (it just reaches) and opens it up again. It isn't infected, but it won't heal and looks awful. What can I do to stop him from licking his nose? — Wendy, via email DEAR WENDY: The tip of the nose is a tough spot to have a scratch when you're a dog. The skin is somewhat thin, and the wound itches as it heals, and what dog can resist licking that itchy spot? Even though the wound isn't infected, you should consult the vet, even if it's just a phone call. He or she may recommend a specific medication — say, a nasty-tasting antibiotic cream — or have other advice that can help. Many pet owners say they've had some success with dabbing a triple antibiotic ointment on the sore spot twice a day, and distracting their dog for a few minutes with a treat or playing with them.

Even though she was taking her dog out for only a few minutes, the conditions were very uncomfortable and maybe even painful for the dog. Can you tell your readers to be aware of the outdoor conditions and only let their pets out if they're capable of handling the weather? Not all dogs are the same, and they don't necessarily "get used to it" when it's extremely cold or hot. — Sid P., Lowell, Massachusetts DEAR SID: That is a very good point! Even with a protective sweater or vest and booties, conditions can just be too extreme for your pet. And that definition of "too extreme" can vary for each of your pets. A large dog may handle cold weather much better, for much longer, than a small or even medium-size dog. How can you tell what a dog can handle? First, some breeds are known for their tolerance to cold — or lack thereof. A Dachsund has very low tolerance and may quickly get ill, while a Bernese mountain dog thrives in cold, snowy landscapes. Second, each dog has its own level of tolerance, regardless of breed. Owners must protect their pets from the cold, observe their behavior when they go out (do they whimper, shiver or limp?) and respond immediately. For small dogs with tiny paws and low cold tolerance, invest in pee pads to use on chilly days. Send your tips or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

A few owners recommended placing a muzzle (or a comfortable cloth muzzle) on a dog for short periods to give any medicine being used time to sink in. If you go this route, be sure to supervise Twitch the entire time, give him lots of praise and a treat before and after putting the muzzle on. Nose wounds that won't heal can be troublesome, but keep looking for ways to treat the scratch that will reduce Twitch's urge to lick at the spot.

IF YOU DON'Y TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUMS, IT CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

GUM DISEASE AND HEART DISEASE:

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not." Dr. OZ Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., FACS Director, Cardiovascular Institute Columbia Medical Center, NYC ABC News, Good Morning America Several studies have shown that periodontal (gum) disease has a direct association with heart disease. Scientists believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the link. Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions. Patients at risk for infective endocarditis may require antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. See your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing. Advanced gum

disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States. It can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth and it may become more severe over time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and start moving around in your mouth. This is the most common form of periodontitis in adults but can occur at any age. It usually gets worse slowly, but there can be periods of rapid progression.

disease goes both ways–periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar. Severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar, contributing to increased periods of time when the body functions with a high blood sugar. This puts people with diabetes at increased risk for diabetic complications.

DIABETES AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE:

Additional studies have also pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one study that looked at the causal relationship of oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to those in the control group.

Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease, which in turn can increase blood sugar and diabetic complications. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of diabetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. Research has suggested that the relationship between diabetes and periodontal

STROKE:

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST? A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. Periodontists often treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease or a complex medical history. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned) or root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed). They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using a range of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants. During the first visit, the periodontist usually reviews the patient’s complete medical and dental histories. It is extremely important for the periodontist to know if any medications are being taken or if the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy.

The periodontist examines the gums, checks to see if there is any gum line recession, assesses how the teeth fit together when biting, and checks the teeth to see if any are loose. The periodontist will also take a small measuring instrument called a probe and place it between the teeth and gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets; this helps the periodontist assess the health of the gums. X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below the gum line. Andrew Forrest, D.M.D., M.S. is the clinical director of Premier Dental Group. He oversees a team of eight advanced trained dentists. He is a specialist in Periodontics and Dental Implants. He has been practicing dentistry for 13 years. His research on the interdisciplinary management of Cancer Treatment, Irradiation Therapy, and Implantology was completed at the University of Miami in 2001. This research awarded him the Straumann ITI Implant Dentistry Scholarship Award. While attending Dental School, Dr. Forrest completed two Periodontics externships, the first at New York University and the latter at Harvard University. He completed his externship in Anesthesiology at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Forrest completed his three year specialty training in Periodontics and Implant Surgery at the University of Florida, Shands Hospital. During that time, he also completed his Masters Degree with a focus on Oral Immunology. His heritage in the dental profession spans three generations. Presently, Dr. Forrest has a teaching appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Florida. The focus of his practice centers upon the surgical reconstruction of supporting tissues for the preservation of teeth and Dental Implantology. To date, Dr. Forrest has placed more than 6,000 dental implants. He lectures to other dentists on how dental implants can improve a patient’s quality of life cosmetically and functionally. Dr. Forrest is also a faculty reviewer for the Periodontics Chapter in a McGraw Hill textbook. Currently, he is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, Florida Society of Dental Anesthesiology, Florida Association of Periodontists, and the Memorial Hospital Dental Study Club. During his residency at University of Florida, Dr. Forrest worked on many complex multidisciplinary cases. He realized at a very early point in his career that he could make a positive impact on the quality of people's lives. At Premier, he helped create a team of collaborating dentists, who work together to treat some of the most challenging patient cases. His center has turned into the “go to” destination for South Florida’s Professionals and A-listers for smile makeovers. His team has treated models, actors, athletes, and notable socialites. Each member of his team has been thoroughly selected and vetted. He has encouraged the team of specialists to treat patient cases comprehensively, thereby maximizing treatment efficiency and patient care. Patients benefit from this cohesive environment by receiving all of their dental care from one center. Dr. Forrest was born and raised here in South Florida. His team practices in a modern treatment center that comprehensively focuses on all aspects of dental care. Premier Dental Group is a team of highly qualified, advanced, specialized dentists. More importantly, his team cares about their community. Their mission, simply put: Premier Dental Group is committed to providing dentistry that changes people's lives; in doing so we change our own.

Why in the world would Miss Sook insist that Buddy invite him of all people? Could she perhaps have a special lesson about friendship and forgiveness up her sleeve?

'TIS THE SEASON ... FOR A GOOD READ! By Lucie Winborne If a certain popular song is to be believed, it may be the most wonderful time of the year, but let's face it: The holiday season is, for most of us, also the busiest. The shopping. The decorating. The cooking. The baking. The wrapping. The rushing. The stress. What better reason to carve out a few minutes for yourself and curl up with a good book? Whether you're in the mood for humor, mystery or a sweetly simple life lesson, consider giving yourself an early gift with one of these holiday titles.

sational forays into guests' sex lives. Looking for a bit of a change, she plans a trip to Philadelphia to tape a conversation between former FBI agent Gregor Demarkian and a serial killer, but when her crewmembers start turning up dead before filming begins, her special guest will have to use his sleuthing skills to avoid a possible eight nights of murder!

Happy Reading!

*** Ever entertained even a brief fantasy of opting out of pre-Yule madness? Luther and Nora Krank take it a step further in John Grisham's comedic bestseller "Skipping Christmas." With their only child overseas serving in the Peace Corps and "precious little to show" for all the spending and effort normally expended around Dec. 25, they decide instead to end the season with a cruise to the Caribbean. If only they hadn't told their neighbors ...

It's been 16 years since Erin Scott was abandoned by Raimi Price, the boy of her dreams, at her high-school prom. Now she's the successful owner of a flourishing department store set for expansion. But in Shirley Hailstock's "Kwanzaa Angel," the course of true love hardly runs smooth: Raimi makes a return visit to town, planning not only to settle but to reconcile with the girl he left behind, yet ends up complicating matters by bidding on the same piece of property as Erin. Is their history doomed to repeat itself?

"Festival of Deaths," a holiday mystery by Jane Haddam, takes readers into the wild and woolly world of New York talk-show host Lotte Goldman, known for her sen-

• "Wondering what wine to serve at your holiday party? Order a case of mixed wines. You might get a hit on your hands!" — C.C. in Oregon

• Having a holiday party? Put food and drinks in separate areas, as these are places that guests tend to linger. With different stops for each, guests will not bunch up in one place trying to do both, and it actually encourages mingling!

New Year's Eve is a time for beginnings, not endings ... unless you're one of four very different people who for very different reasons find themselves united in a single purpose at the top of a 15-story building in London (hint: they're not there for a romantic kiss at midnight). Yet as Nick Hornby shares in his darkly humorous "A Long Way Down," they hardly expected to spend the night swapping stories with others just as miserable ... or end up postponing death a little while longer as a result.

• Instead of going out and buying extra items to have on hand for guests, just borrow from your neighbors. Extra towels, place settings, silverware, kitchen appliances: It's a pretty good bet that someone on your street has it for you to borrow. If you don't know your neighbors well enough to ask, maybe you should start planning a get-to-know-you party right now.

• Dirty candles can be cleaned up quickly with a leg of pantyhose. Slip the candle in the hose, rub the outside of the candle and release.

• "Commit to spending one or two unscheduled nights per week during holiday break just hanging out with your kids. You can enjoy the toys they might have gotten for Christmas or Hanukkah, read, play games or just relax in each other's company. They will return to school (and you to work) less stressed." — E.G. in Massachusetts

• Need a quick batch of cookies? Keep a box mix of cake on hand. Instead of the listed ingredients, add two eggs and a half-cup of oil to the mix. Mix and shape, then bake at 350 F for 10 minutes. They are really good, and you can get pretty creative.

• My personal holiday rule is simple: When in doubt, leave it out. There is so much to do, and we want to cover it all, but my best memories of holidays involve the people whom I spend time with, not the place setting or the exact perfect gift. — Happy Holidays, JoAnn

• Inexpensive gift idea: a cute holiday coffee mug with a bar of chocolate, a packet of hot cocoa or instant coffee, a peppermint stick and a decorative holiday pick or spray. Place inside a gallon-size zipper-top bag, tie with a ribbon, then trim off the zipper-top, leaving just the plastic. Looks nice.

Take a Chance to Win Three Amigos The Humane Society of Broward County’s largest fundraiser is the Walk for the Animals which will be held on March 18, 2017 at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale. The event netted over $525,000 in 2016 and the center hopes to raise even more in 2017. People are encouraged to set up fundraising pages and collect donations from friends and family. Others like to form “Packs” or teams and they get very creative in raising funds. One such team is the Puppy Peddlers, which are a group of volunteers who work in the shelter’s Pet Boutique and their friends. For the 2017 Walk the team is selling chances to win an estate stamped silkscreen print by Louisiana artist George Rodriguez. The print “Three Amigos” measures 22” x 28”. Chances are $10.00 each; 6 for $50.00; 13 for $100.00 and can be purchased by visiting the Humane Society of Broward County’s Pet Boutique 2070 Griffin Road; Hair Industry 2000 Harrison Street; the Pet Doctor of Davie 5183 S. University Drive; Yachtronics 626 SW 4th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, or call Cherie at 954-266-6831. For more information about the Walk, please visit www.walk4theanimals.com . The Humane Society of Broward County is a private, non-profit organization supported by donations from companies and people who want to make a difference in the lives of homeless animals. The shelter has only one location at 2070 Griffin Road, Fort Lauderdale and is not affiliated with any national or local organization with a similar name. To see animals up for adoption or find out about other upcoming events visit www.humanebroward.com.
