• Gold melts at 1947° F (1064° C). It can conduct both heat and electricity and it never rusts or tarnishes. It cannot be destroyed by air, water, or fire, but it can be melted and mixed with other metals. • Gold is so pliable that it can be made into sewing thread. An ounce of gold (28 g) can be stretched over 50 miles (80 km). The thinnest man-made filament is gold thread only 4 microns wide. By comparison, a spider’s silk is only 1 micron wide. • Gold is more malleable than any other metal. An ounce of gold can be beaten into a sheet of gold leaf that covers 300 square feet and is only 1/200,000 of an inch thick. • A cubic foot of gold weighs 1,204 lbs. (546 kg). The only heavier metal is platinum. • Carat with a C is a measure of the size of gemstones, but karat with a K measures the purity of gold: 24 karat is pure gold, which is soft enough that it can be easily molded by hand

oxide; iron rusts because it reacts with oxygen. But gold does none of these things; its surface is inert.
MOTHER LODES
GOLD (continued):
• The bottom of the Mponeng Mine in South Africa is one of the deepest point humans have reached beneath the land surface. The gold mine is 2.5 miles (4 km) deep. The average temperature of the rocks on the Earth’s crust is 55°F (13° C) but at the bottom of the mine, they are 140°F (60° C). Its 236 miles (379 km) of tunnels are longer than the New York subway system. At the bottom of this pit is a seam of ore about 30 inches (76 cm) wide. About 4,000 people work there.
SOLID GOLD • According to the legend, King Hiero II wanted to have his old gold crown melted down and made into a new crown. However, he was afraid that the jeweler hired to do the work would cut the pure gold with a less expen sive metal such as silver. The crown would still weigh the same; it would still look like pure gold; but the jew eler would be making off with a chunk of royal gold for free. • The king asked Greek scientist Archimedes how he would be able to tell if the jeweler stole gold from the royal crown. Archimedes pondered the question for some time. Then, he decided to take a bath.
GOLDEN WORDS • The word “goldâ€? evolved from the ancient word “ghelâ€? or “gholâ€? meaning yellow, bright, or shiny. • The chemical symbol for gold is Au, from the Latin word “aurumâ€? meaning “shining dawn.â€? This is the same root word that gave Aurora, the goddess of dawn, her name. • When the Gauls attacked Rome in 390 B.C., they were about to sack the temple where the treasure was stored when honking geese alerted the Romans. The treasure was saved. The grateful Roman citizens built a shrine to Moneta, the goddess of warning. The word “monetaâ€? gave us our word “money.â€? • When U.S. banks first started printing paper bank notes, they could be redeemed for actual gold, leading to the phrase “as good as gold.â€?
ALL THE GOLD IN FORT KNOX How much gold is in Fort Knox? The entire stockpile now weighs 147.3 million troy ounces, which is worth about $130 billion at today’s prices.
GOLD NUGGETS • In 1983, a Brazilian prospector found a 137-pound (62 kg) nugget that contained a million dollars worth of gold. • The largest gold nugget ever found was found in Aus tralia in 1869. The nugget is 10 by 25 inches and yielded 140 lbs. (64 kg) of pure gold. It was found buried under just two inches of dirt.
• As he got into the over-filled tub, some water splashed on the floor. That’s when he realized that a body im mersed in fluid loses weight equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces— an important law of physics. He knew that by weighing the amount of water displaced by the crown both before and after it was re-worked, he could tell if the gold had been adulterated. He became so ex cited that he allegedly rushed naked into the streets of Syracuse, Sicily, shouting “Eureka!â€? which means “I have found it!â€? The crown was weighed, the jeweler did steal some gold— and he paid for it with his life.
IT’S A FACT • The world pours more steel in an hour than it has poured gold since the beginning of recorded history.
A USEFUL METAL • Humans have been working with gold for some 7,000 years or so, whereas the Iron Age began only about 1200 B.C. This is in spite of the fact that there is about four million times more iron than gold in the crust of the Earth. This is largely due to the fact that iron reacts with other substances and combines with them to form min eral ores, which are difficult to separate. Gold does not easily combine with other elements in the ground and can be plucked from the gravel in its pure form, if only you know where to look. • Gold is too soft for making tools and it is inordinately heavy. However, it is a highly unreactive metal, so it is impervious to corrosion from gases in the air. Silver tar nishes because it reacts with airborne sulphur; copper turns green because it reacts with oxygen and carbon diÂ
• John Sutter owned property on which gold was found which started the California Gold Rush in 1849. He was a wealthy man already when the gold was found, but hordes of people moved onto his property, ruining it, and he could not get them to leave. Then the govern ment seized his property on a technicality, and he died in poverty. In the first 10 years after the California gold rush began at Sutter’s Mill, California produced more than half a billion dollars worth of gold, almost 35 times the amount the U.S. had paid to Mexico for the Western lands. • Farmer Simon Drake of England was preparing his field for planting when he unearthed a strange golden coin. He looked it up in a book of ancient coins and dis covered it was a gold noble dating back to the 1400s. A subsequent search turned up 94 more coins in his field. In May of 1985 they were auctioned for some $100,000.

Amazing Plants
POISON IVY • Poison ivy causes an allergic reaction because the sap contains an oily sub stance called urushiol. Other plants that also contain urushiol include poi son oak and poison sumac. • The word “urushiol” comes from the Japanese word “urushi” meaning lac quer because the toxic sap can be re fined to make a very durable and beautiful lacquer. • You’d think that poison ivy contains urushiol as a defensive measure, but in fact the substance merely helps the plant retain water and it just so happens that it’s also an allergen. • You cannot get a rash from simply brushing against poison ivy; you must come into contact with the sap of the plant caused when leaves and stems are damaged, due to cutting the plant, picking the leaves, crushing the stems, and so forth. • Urushiol enters the skin so quickly that a person has only ten minutes af ter exposure to wash it off in order to prevent a rash from forming. The rash usually shows up within 48 hours of exposure. • It takes just a billionth of a gram of urushiol to cause a rash. A mere quarter ounce of the stuff would be enough to cause a rash on every person on Earth. And the amount that could fit on the head of a pin would be enough to cause a rash on 500 people. • About 85% of people are allergic to urushiol. Exposure to urushiol causes more cases of dermatitis than is caused
by all other plant species combined. • Often people will fail to develop a rash after their first exposure to poison ivy, through the rash tends to grow progres sively worse with each successive expo sure. • It’s found throughout North America and Asia though it does not grow well in arid regions or high altitudes. • Although poison ivy usu ally has three leaves, its ap pearance can vary widely. Eastern poison ivy is a rope-like vine while western poison ivy is a shrubby bush. The vine can cover the ground or it can climb tree trunks and fences. The foli age changes appearance as the seasons change, starting reddish in the spring, green in the summer, yellow and or ange in fall. • Despite its name, poison ivy is not a true ivy. True ivy is in the genus called “Hedera.” Poison ivy is in the genus “Toxicodendron” which is Latin mean ing “toxic tree.” • You don’t need to come into direct contact with poison ivy to develop a rash. The oil can be carried on garden tools, pet fur, clothing, tires, lawnmow ers, weed whackers, and so forth. When poison ivy is burned, the smoke can cause considerable damage to the lungs if inhaled. • About 350,000 people will suffer from poison ivy rashes in the U.S. each year. • The oil can remain active for up to five years. Even dead leaves still carry the oil.

HOLLYWOOD — We told you recently that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended its con tract with ABC until 2028, but that when ABC wanted to have Jimmy Kimmel as the host. The Academy told ABC it wanted to limit the network's involvement in the awards show. Well, it looks like $75 million does a lot of talking, because The Academy has named Jimmy Kim mel as host of the Feb. 26 Oscars show. In the past, the hosts were film actors, but ABC, with self-serving mo tives, wanted Kimmel because it would boost his latenight show's ratings.

Kimmel has never actually acted in a film. His film credit list reveals his non-acting career films such as Corky's voice in "Road Trip," (2000); "Like Mike" (2002); "Garfield: The Movie," (2004); cameo, as himself in the comedy documentary "The Aristocrats" (2005); cameos as himself in "Hellboy II: The Golden Army" (2008) and "Project X" (2012); voice of passive-aggressive Smurf in "The Smurfs 2" (2013); and as the host of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in "Pitch Perfect 2" (2015). He'll also voice the dad in Dreamworks' upcoming "The Boss Baby" (March 31 release). Does that make him a movie star? Either no stars wanted the job or there just aren't any movie stars anymore. Even Kevin Hart, the hottest comic in films, would have been great choice. *** Nonetheless, the Oscar buzz has begun. The films be ing touted for Best Picture are "Manchester by the Sea," "Loving," "Jackie," "Hacksaw Ridge," "La La Land," "Fenc es" and "Nocturnal Animals." For best actor, people are talking about Casey Affleck ("Manchester by the Sea"), Denzel Washington ("Fences"), Tom Hanks ("Sully"), Jake Gyllenhaal ("Nocturnal Animals") and Ryan Gosling ("La

La Land"). For best actress, the buzz is Natalie Portman ("Jackie"), Emma Stone ("La La Land"), Ruth Negga ("Lov ing"), Annette Bening ("20th Century Woman"), Jessica Chastain ("Miss Sloan"), Amy Adams (for either "Noctur nal Animals" or "Arrival"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Passen gers") and Marion Cotillard ("Allied"). *** Ryan Gosling, who was sensational singing and dancing in "La La Land," will be seen next in "Weightless," with Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender and Benicio Del Toro, out March 17. He also has signed on for "Blade Runner 2049," with Harrison Ford, Robin Wright and Jared Leto. The original cost $28 million and grossed $33.8 million. The sequel is due Oct. 6. Not what we'd call holiday fare, but "Patriots Day," star ring Mark Wahlberg, about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, opened Dec. 21 in NYC and LA, and goes na tionwide Jan. 13. When things get tough, go see a good movie to forget reality for a few hours. Let's hope 2017 turns out to truly be a HAPPY NEW YEAR! (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I am in such suspense from that winter finale for "Des ignated Survivor"! Will it be back in January so we can see who was shot by the sniper? -- Marian E., via email A: You'll have to wait just a little longer to see who took the bullet. From the promotional trailer, we know that it wasn't Aaron Shore, Emily Rhodes or Mike Ritter. We'll find out who that is on the operating table come Wednesday, March 8, at 10/9c. Who do you think got shot? I'll place $5 on the victim being Alex Kirkman (played by Natascha McElhone), al though I don't think she'll die -- it's just enough to hit home for President Tom Kirkman and get him really fired up to figure out the conspiracy behind the Capitol bombing. I realize this isn't "24" and Kiefer Sutherland can't go all vigilante since he's the president of the United States, but I still would like to see more fire and outrage from his character, and this definitely would do the trick! And they have plenty of time to explore every possibility, since ABC granted the popular series a full-season, 22-ep isode pickup almost as soon as it came out of the gate. *** Q: Is it true that there is going to be a "Blade Runner" sequel? If so, will Harrison Ford return? -- Lee T., Baton Rouge, Louisiana A: Yes and yes. Ridley Scott has followed up his culthit 1982 science-fiction film with "Blade Runner 2049," which is due Oct. 6. The sequel stars Ryan Gosling, and yes, Harrison Ford, who is reprising his role of Rick Deck
ard. Fans are always hesitant when it comes to reboots and sequels, so the stars have to be aligned for some thing like this to work, and I think that because Ridley and Harrison are back, and Ryan has been added to the cast, that we'll have another blockbuster phenomenon on our hands this fall. I can't wait to see it! *** Q: Can you tell me what Joseph Fiennes has been up to lately? I haven't seen him in anything in a while. -- Felic ity F., via Facebook A: You can catch Ralph Fiennes' baby brother in "The Handmaid's Tale," which is coming to Hulu this April. The 10-episode series follows the Margaret Atwood book of the same name, centering on life in the dystopia of Gilead, a totalitarian society in what was formerly part of the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state. As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (played by Elisabeth Moss), is a handmaid in household of Commander Fred Waterford (played by Joseph), one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world. The series also stars Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley and Max Minghella. might be surprised to learn, though, that China has its own version of the practice: There, buildings skip from the third to the fifth floor. The word for the number four is pronounced almost the same way as the word for death, so the number is considered to be unlucky. * It was Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Com mander of the Allied Forces in Europe during World War II and the 34th president of the United States, who made the following sage observation: "I would rather try to persuade a man to go along, because once I have per suaded him he will stick. If I scare him, he will stay just as long as he is scared, and then he is gone." * 'Tis the season for resolutions — have you made yours yet? If not, here are some of the most common ones you can choose from: lose weight, eat healthier, get more exer cise, stop smoking, create (and stick to!) a budget, save money, get organized, find a better job, and even just be a better person. Sounds great, right? I have some bad news, though: According to statisticians, only about half of Americans make any resolutions at all for the new year — and of those who do, a quarter of them give up within two weeks. * In 14th-century Europe, not many people kept cats as house pets; they were too much associated with witch es. * There is a dispute among literary historians concern ing the last words of beloved American poet Emily Dick enson. Some claim that the last thing she said was, "I must go in, the fog is rising." Others claim her last words were rather less poetic: "Oh, is that all it is?" * You're probably aware that many high-rise buildings in the United States don't include a 13th floor, skipping straight from 12 to 14, just because the superstitious among us consider the number 13 to be unlucky. * Most Americans are familiar with graham crackers -they're a favorite childhood snack. But have you ever wondered what they're made of? The obvious answer is "graham flour" -- but what is that? It's just flour made from whole wheat. This type of flour was named after a 19-century Presbyterian minister named Sylvester Gra ham, who promoted the snack as a digestive aid and a cure for alcoholism. * The biggest polar bear ever recorded weighed a whop ping 2,209 pounds — roughly the weight of 12 adult men. * Russian health authorities are very familiar with cold-weather injuries — and fatalities. For instance, ev ery winter, about 100 Russians are killed by falling ici cles. * Noon and midnight are the only times that have their own names. The origin of the term "midnight" is obvi ous, since it occurs in the middle of the night, but how did 12 p.m. come to be called noon? The word itself is derived from the Latin word "nono," which means "nine." Still doesn't seem to make sense? Here's how lexicographers trace the evolution of the word: If hours are counted from dawn — roughly 6 a.m. — instead of midnight, nine hours into the day would be 3 p.m., or

midafternoon. Lacking accurate portable timepieces, ancient Romans used the term "nono" to refer to the midafternoon in a general sense. Over time, as the pro nunciation of the word shifted to "noon," the meaning of the word shifted to "midday." Once society began to be run according to the accuracy of clocks, noon was pinpointed as 12 p.m. * Some police departments in Canada are known for giving out "positive tickets" — citations for doing some thing good in public. *** Thought for the Day: "Few things are harder to put up with than a good example." — Mark Twain (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

IS MEDICATION RISK WORTH THE BENEFIT? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman with dia betes. My body, as I have been told, is bad with arthri tis, for which I have been prescribed Celebrex. I have been taking it for a few months now, and am definitely moving around with a lot less pain. I recently watched a program that devoted the entire hour to Celebrex. It scared me out of my wits upon hearing the side effects of the medicine. I am asking your advice about whether to stop taking the Celebrex. — S.A. ANSWER: All medicines have risks, and in order to de cide whether you should keep taking the medicine, you need to really understand what the risks are and bal ance them against the benefits you feel in your ability to move around more easily. In the case of Celebrex, we have a pretty good idea of what the risks are. Like all related drugs (including ibu profen and naproxen), celecoxib (Celebrex) can damage the kidneys, so it isn't recommended for people with kidney disease. There also can be allergic reactions, which may be related to allergies to sulfa drugs. A few people have had vision changes. However, the most con cerning risk is heart disease — both heart attacks and heart failure. These risks definitely are increased among users of celecoxib.

hide the risks of their medications, and honesty de mands that we admit that all drugs and supplements have risks. Only you can make that decision, but I think it's up to us as doctors to have a frank discussion, es pecially about medications intended to be taken longterm. ***
However, the absolute risk is small: There were about two extra cases of all heart events, including heart attack and heart failure, per thousand people taking 400 mg once daily, and six extra events in people taking 400 mg twice daily. Those risks probably are higher if you are at increased risk for heart disease (which you probably are, because of your diabetes), but it still means less than 1 percent of people per year. If the medicine isn't helping, the risk certainly isn't worth it. However, only you can decide if the risk is worth the benefit.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 72-year-old female. My doctor told me four years ago that I would need a Pap test only every two years, which I have done. She told me recent ly that I would not need to have any more. My tests have always been negative. I am concerned, as I would rath er be proactive and know early if I had cancer. What is your opinion, and what does the American Cancer Soci ety say? — B.L.S.

Those who began receiving benefits before 1997, howev er, get their benefits on the first of the month. Starting in 2013, Social Security stopped sending out checks. You now have two ways to get your money: * Direct deposit (electronic transfer) into your bank ac count on the day you're supposed to get it. This is your best bet because it's free. This is not to be confused with an ETA account that is only for electronic transfers. Ask at your bank to be sure which one you have.
WAITING ON FIRST CHECK FROM SOCIAL SECURITY If you'll be eligible for Social Security soon and are counting on having the money in hand on your birth day, beware. That's likely not when you'll receive it, espe cially not your first check. The month is broken down into thirds. If your birthday is somewhere between the first and the 10th, expect the money on the second Wednesday of the month. Be tween the 11th and 20th, you'll get your money on the third Wednesday. After that, you get yours on the fourth Wednesday.
American Cancer Society, have recommended stopping screening at age 65 for women with no history of cancer and who have had adequate screening, meaning three negative Pap smears (or two negative combination Pap and HPV tests) in the past 10 years, with at least one in the past five years. The risk for cancer in this specific group is very low.
* Money applied to your Direct Express Debit card. While it's supposedly free to handle your money this way, it of ten isn't. You get one free withdrawal each month, can check your balances and can use the card wherever debit cards are accepted. (Probably not to pay your landlord, though.) After that, you'll start getting dinged for small amounts, depending on what services you ask for. Additionally, you won't receive your money until the month following your birthday — unless you file at age 62 and your birthday is the 1st or 2nd of the month. Meanwhile read the details before you apply for Social Security so you know what to expect. To view the 2017 payment schedule, go online to www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN05-10031-2017.pdf. fourth Stanley Cup. Army beat Navy. There were individual achievements. Jaromir Jagr moved past Mark Messier for all-time points in the NHL. Andy Murray finally broke through to become the top-seeded player in men's tennis. Kobe Bryant put up 60 points in his final game. Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams dominated woman's tennis. Jimmie Johnson won his record-tying seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup title. Michael Phelps won his 23rd gold medal, Max Scherzer struck out 22 in a game, and Conor Mc Gregor conquered the rest of the world. McGregor, who really helped propel the UFC to a higher ratings breakout after Rhonda Rousey's hiatus from the sport, might well be considered the sportsman of the year if it weren't for Joe Madden's deft hand at managing the brilliant Theo Epstein Cubs.

Without ques tion, the highlight being the Chicago Cubs finally win ning a World Series, ending the Hack Wilson era. It was a year that saw LeBron James cement his all-time superstar legacy by bringing a championship back to Cleveland, a year that saw Peyton Manning leave on top. The Golden State Warriors did their best Seattle Mari ners impression, setting the mark for the best regular season record, then not winning it all at the end. Vil lanova kept Philadelphia basketball front and center, taking the NCAA tournament. Alabama continues to roll in college football, and Penn State returned to the good graces of the game. There were some events more recognized as some one's loss than another's win: Jordan Spieth's collapse, allowing Danny Willet to add a green jacket to his wardrobe being the foremost example thereof. Tyson Fury, who acts like a loser, wobbled around the ring to beat Vladimir Klitschko for what used to be the well-respected heavyweight belt. Tom Brady, in one of the stupidest suspensions in NFL history, missed four games. (Way to market your stars, Goodell.) And then there were those who slipped this vale of tears. Giants like Ali, Arnie and Gordie are gone. Leg ends from the past century, their names will forever remain in the upper echelon of sporting statistics, men of exceeding valor both in their respective sports and away from the cheers of the crowd in gainful re tirement. BANJOS This week, Tidbits is “strummin’ on the ole banjo,” as we look at the facts surrounding this stringed instrument. • There are differing theories as to the origin of the word “banjo.” It may have its roots in the Nigerian Yoruba lan guage, from the term “Bami jo,” translat ing “dance for me.” Others claim it came from the Kimbundu language in Ango la, from their word “mbanza,” or from a West African term for a bamboo stick that was used for the instrument’s neck. But there’s no argument as to the African origin of the banjo. • The journals of English explorer Rich ard Jobson during his 1620 voyage down the Gambia River in Africa mentioned an instrument “made of a great gourd and a neck, thereunto was fastened strings.” A 1678 document from the Caribbean island of Martinique references slave gatherings where the “banza” is played. Because of many different countries engaged in the slave trade, the instrument spread throughout the world. An English physi cian visiting Jamaica in 1687 referred to it as a “strum strump.”

reels, and Scottish, Welsh, and English ballads. It was also influenced by the ear ly music of the African-Americans. The early five-string banjos were referred to as “clawhammer” banjos, meaning that picks weren’t used, rather rhythmic right hand techniques were employed.
• The banjo is classified as a chordophone, meaning it makes sound through vibrat ing strings stretched between two points. The banjo’s round-shaped body has ani mal skin or parchment stretched over it, and usually has four or five strings, a fret ted fingerboard, and an elongated neck.
• In 1945, a young 21-year-old named Earl Scruggs joined Bill Monroe’s Blue Grass Boys Band, and created the distinctive sound we now call bluegrass. Earl popu larized a three-finger banjo-picking style now known as “Scruggs style. “ Earl, who had started playing at age four, was intro duced in 1945 at the Grand Ole Opry as “the boy who made the banjo talk.” Three years later, Scruggs had his own group, The Foggy Mountain Boys.
• The first American commercial man ufacturer of banjos was a drum maker and musical instrument dealer from Bal timore named William Boucher, who be gan production in the early 1840’s. Three of his banjos are housed in the Smithso nian Museum of American History. • In the 1860s, the banjo became popular as a “parlor” instrument for amateur mu sic performances in the home, and was frequently used to accompany classical music. • The Sears & Roebuck catalog featured banjos for the first time during the 1890s. • A four-stringed banjo is a plectrum banjo, meaning it is played with a pick.

Returning a pet to its original owner can be emotionally difficult. I have friends who actually worked out a joint custody agreement, with a visitation schedule for their dogs after their relationship ended. It sounds like Tiger's owner also loves and misses him, and because you're halfway across the country, there's a good chance you would never see Tiger again. But if you know he will be going to an equally loving and caring home, and the original promise was to be only tempo rary caregivers while your friend battled a tough illness ... well, you know the answer.
OWNER WANTS CAT BACK
WHEN IS IT TIME TO SAY GOODBYE?
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Two years ago, my husband and I took in a beautiful orange cat, "Tiger," when a friend be came too ill to care for him. We weren't sure we wanted a pet — I suffer from dander and dust allergies — but we decided to give it a try. We picked him up on Christ mas Eve at the airport after he was flown from Atlanta, a wide-eyed, meowing, anxious ball of fur. As soon as we got home he shot out from the carrier and under the sofa, where he hid for almost three weeks, sneaking out at night to eat and use the litter box.
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: As my dog gets older, I've been thinking more about when the time comes that we'll lose her. She doesn't have serious health issues now, just a little arthritis, but I wonder what I would do if she approached the end of her life and were suffering. How do you know when it's "time"? There is always such love and trust toward us humans, how do we know when the lack of quality of life outweighs our desire to care for and protect man's best friend?
Tiger gradually got used to his new home, and we got used to him, and now we can't imagine life without him. He's the best Christmas present we've ever received.
Lack of control over bowel seems like a good marker, as does difficulty standing and lethargy. What guidelines do you suggest? — Amy M., via email
Here's the problem: Our friend has recovered and wants Tiger back, but I can't bear to let him go. What would you suggest? — Charles H., Dallas
DEAR AMY: There are few clear guidelines for when it's time to make that final trip to the veterinarian and say our goodbyes to a beloved pet. That is always a discus sion you'll want to have with the vet and with the other members of your family.
DEAR CHARLES: We become more deeply attached to our pets than we realize, often grieving more when we lose them than we do for many humans.
A number of factors come into play when determining
end-of-life care for your pet. Their general physical con dition and behavior; the disease(s) they're suffering from; their symptoms (and whether they're treatable); and more. I've heard many anecdotes from pet owners about their dog or cat or Guinea pig's last days. Each loss is different. And while there are some signs that a dog's time is ap proaching, as you outlined, often a pet has many more days and even years left. So, I don't have an easy answer. I do have a wish for your dog, that she has a happy and illness-free senior life for as long as possible. Send your questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

FUN WITH RECYCLED RIBBONS AND WRAP There are plenty of things to do with holiday leftovers. And I'm not talking food. Think of all the colorful cata logs, wrinkled gift wrap, ribbons and bows stashed away in your recycling bin this week. To artist and retired art educator Becky Anderson, it's a treasure-trove of stimu lating materials that can open doors to expression and creative thinking for her 19-month-old granddaughter, Lucia. "When Lucia comes over, I like to share what I enjoy doing, and that usually comes in the form of making things with our hands," she said while tearing cast-off holiday gift wrap into different shapes. "I'm curious to see what she'll do with paper and a bottle of glue today." Sure enough, all it took was the sound of the spit and

Q: I spend my summer vacations in New Hampshire, where I have found dozens of excellent Indian artifacts, including arrowheads and an occasional tool. Can you recommend a good reference book so I can find out more about the specimens I have? — Jon, Atlanta A: There are several excellent references, but my favor ite is "The Official Overstreet Indian Arrowheads: Iden tification and Price Guide," by Robert M. Overstreet and published by House of Collectibles. Overstreet's guide features more than 8,000 actual-size photographs, up-todate regional market reports, tips on grading and advice on how to buy authentic relics. This is the profession al standard reference for America's oldest collectible. I found several copies at www.abe.com. *** Q: I have a plate that my mom purchased during the ear ly 1950s.
