TIDBITS®HUNTS FOR
SPIES by Janet Spencer Come along with Tidbits as we hunt for famous and infamous spies!
WORLD WAR II SPIES • Hans Stultz taught German spies how to act like Englishmen during World War II. He told all his recruits that the English measured men by their savings accounts. The spies were told to put their money in a bank, then go to the police station claiming they had lost their bank book. The police, seeing such an upstanding man who kept his money in the bank, would think very highly of such a person. Most of the spies did as Stultz instructed because they were anxious to fit into the English community. They never suspected Stultz was actually a British agent who had forewarned all police stations in England to be on the lookout for men who had lost their bank books. • When General MacArthur was in the Philippines, Japanese spies would pose as Chinese or Filipinos in order to penetrate the defenses. Suspected spies would be asked to pronounce the word “hula-hula.” Chinese and Filipinos have no trouble pronouncing the letter ‘L’, but Japanese do not have the ‘L’ sound in their language and would therefore pronounce it “hura-hura” thereby betraying their nationality.

• On December 6, 1941, Japan was preparing to mount the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. A Japanese spy in Pearl Harbor walked right up to the telegraph office in town and sent a dispatch to his confederates describing where the warships were located. The telegram cost $6.82 and nobody in the telegraph office thought it was suspicious. • One plot to foil the Germans involved waging glandular warfare against Hitler. Someone noticed that Hitler had strong female tendencies, and thought that if given female hormones, his voice would rise, his moustache fall out, and his appeal would plummet. They bribed Hitler’s gardener to inject estrogen into his favorite vegetables. The plan failed, perhaps because the gardener kept the bribe and threw away the hormones.

SPIES
• Josephine Baker was a singer, dancer and actress who became one of the biggest stars of the 1920s. During World War II she became a spy for the French resistance. She would use invisible ink made out of onion juice and lemon juice to write secret messages on sheet music. The sheet music was then sent out of the country. When the sheet music was warmed over a lightbulb or candle, the writing became visible. She was awarded the French Legion of Honor medal for her services. (cont’d)
IAN FLEMING’S FIRST PLOT • Ian Fleming worked for the Secret Service during World War II. After the war, he began writing books about a spy named James Bond. His very first book, called “Casino Royale,” was based on a story he heard about while he worked for the Secret Service, in which Russian spies hired two assassins to kill the German ambassador. They were given two camera cases: one was blue and the other was red. The Russians said the red one contained a bomb and the blue one contained a smokescreen. The assassins were
• During World War II the British developed a powerful itching powder thinking that if it could be smuggled to prisoners who would sprinkle it on their captors, they could get a few moments of distraction to escape.

• Mikhail Gorin was a spy in 1938 when he sent a suit to be dry cleaned. He forgot to check the pockets first. The dry cleaner checked them as a matter of routine, and found notes concerning Japanese spies.
told to detonate the bomb in the red case and then deploy the smokescreen in the blue case to make their escape.
(continued):
• A Spanish spy known only by the code name “Garbo” convinced the German embassy in Madrid that he would be a fabulous spy. The Germans believed him and outfitted him with everything he needed. He soon began feeding them information gleaned from his 14 agents and 11 contacts. He sent the Germans 400 letters and 2,000 radio messages full of false information. His cover was never blown. In fact, the Germans awarded him the highly prized Iron Cross— just at the same time the British awarded him the prized Order of the British Empire.
Only then did he discover that the Germans had paid him in counterfeit currency.
• The assassins did not trust the Russians and decided to reverse the instructions, assuming that the blue camera case actually held the bomb, and the red case held the smokescreen. • As it turned out, both cases contained a bomb. The Russians wanted the first bomb to kill the ambassador, while the second bomb destroyed the evidence. As it turned out, the assassins were killed while the ambassador they were sent to murder escaped with only minor injuries. • Regardless of whether or not the story was true, it made a great plot and launched Ian Fleming’s career, as well as James Bond’s.
THE MYSTERIOUS RADIO • Two spies in France needed to disguise their radio transmitter so it could never be located by the Germans. They got a large wine cask and divided it in half, with wine in the bottom, and the transmitting equipment— and the radio man— in the top. While one man pushed the cask on a cart, dispensing wine to customers, the radio man would be transmitting information. When German tracking trucks appeared, the radio man would be signaled to stop transmitting. The Germans were mystified. • An Albanian man named Ilya Basna worked as a spy for the Germans. He got a job as a valet to the British ambassador to Turkey, and photographed documents that came through the office. He became the highest paid German spy. The British figured out they had a spy in their midst, but Basna fled with his money to Argentina. He went to a bank to deposit his fortune.
• Heinrich Albert was a German spy in New York City during World War I. He dozed off on the subway one day, and awoke with a start when the doors opened at the next stop. He left the subway so abruptly that he forgot his briefcase. A Secret Service agent who had been following him snatched the briefcase, finding it held papers concerning German plans to attack American munitions factories. The documents were subsequently published in the New York “World.” • When agents stormed the Japanese embassy in Portugal, they seized a secret Japanese code book, thinking it would be helpful to the Allies. They didn't know that the Allies had already broken the code. Now that Japan knew the code book had been stolen, they immediately changed the code. It took more than a year before the U.S. could break the new code.
Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it. Mark Twain

GIANT HOGWEED
• It’s a member of the family that includes parsnip, celery, and carrots. Its Latin name Heracleum mantegazzianum derives from the Greek hero Heracles (also called Hercules) who was the god of strength, athletics, and agriculture, and Paolo Mantegazza, who was an Italian scientist.

Amazing Plants
• Giant hogweed contains toxic sap that causes devastating blistering when activated by sunlight. Areas of the skin affected by this chemical burn can take weeks to heal. Often the skin remains photo-sensitive for years afterwards, burning and blistering whenever it is exposed to sunlight. Contact with the eyes can lead to temporary or possibly permanent blindness, which has reportedly happened when children used the large hollow stems as telescopes. In terms of misery inflicted, giant hogweed is far worse than poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac in respect to its potential to harm humans. However, livestock such as sheep, goats, and cattle are impervious to the poison and can even eat the plant without suffering any ill effects.

One of the most troublesome invasive weeds is a toxic plant called giant hogweed. Native to areas in Asia, it was imported to Britain as an ornamental plant before people understood just how nasty this plant is. By then it was too late, and the plant has spread alarmingly throughout temperate regions of the world, including the northeastern and northwestern U.S., southeast and southwestern Canada, and throughout Europe and Britain.

reaching 5 feet (1.5 m) wide. (cont’d) • A single giant hogweed plant can produce over 50,000 seeds. Because it commonly grows along waterways and in marshy areas, it can be spread widely by the movement of the water. Shoots arising from the roots can turn a single plant into a large patch of the plants within a few short growing seasons. • Once established, it can take up to five years of constant battle with herbicides to completely kill off giant hogweed. The seeds remain viable in the soil for years, and any piece of the root that’s left behind can re-grow. • Many places have hotlines that citizens can call to report places where they find giant hogweed growing. People sent to deal with the weed often don hazmat suits to protect themselves from exposure. One way of killing the plant involves covering it with a large plastic trash bag, tying if off at ground level, then chopping the stem of the plant. • Its status as a noxious invasive species means it’s illegal to deliberately plant it, import or export it, or move it across state lines. • If you do come into contact with the plant, and especially the sap, you are advised to wash the affected areas immediately, keep the exposed area out of direct sunlight, and seek medical advice. • In 1971 the budding rock band Genesis produced a dire warning about the plant in their song “The Return of the Giant Hogweed”: “Turn and run! Nothing can stop them, Around every river and canal their power is growing. Stamp them out! We must destroy them, They infiltrate each city with their thick dark warning odor. They are invincible, They seem immune to all our herbicidal battering!”
AGATHA CHRISTIE Agatha Christie began writing her first detective story, “The Mysterious Affair at Styles” when she was 25 years old in 1916 on a dare from her sister who bet that she couldn’t write a mystery the reader couldn’t solve. She did. • It took her three weeks to write the book and four years to find a publisher. It was rejected by six publishers before being brought out in 1920. It sold 2,000 copies and earned her 25 pounds. From then on, she turned out at least one book per year. • Out of her 66 detective novels, she uses poison as the means of murder in 41 of them. • She introduced two timeless detectives. Hercule Poirot, an egotistical, pompous, natty, compulsively neat dandy, and Miss Marple, who was a nosy, gossipy, sharpeyed elderly spinster who dithered her way through the mess. • Agatha Christie avoided the public eye. She once confessed, “The reason I began to write more than 60 years ago was in order to avoid having to talk to people.” • Agatha Christie was once the center of a great mystery herself. In 1926 her husband asked her for a divorce so he could marry his golf partner, Nancy Neele, with whom he’d been having an affair. He asked that she make the divorce a private matter and keep his lover’s name out of the papers. Already in a state of despondency because of her mother’s recent death, Christie went into an emotional tailspin. Her car and her overnight bag were found abandoned by the side of a road mere miles from the place where her husband and his lover were spending the weekend. Inside the car were her expired driver’s license and her fur coat. There was no sign of Agatha. (continued next page) • In the search for Agatha Christie, ponds were dragged. The countryside was combed. Air searches were launched. Agatha Christie’s disappearance headlined every news report, especially after word
got out about her husband and his paramour, Nancy Neele. Eleven days later, a hotel employee recognized a photo in the paper as a guest who had registered under the name “Teresa Neele.” Needless to say, the divorce was not a private matter and the lover’s name was not kept out of the papers. However, sales of Christie’s book soared. • In 1930 she met a nice young archaeologist named Max Mallowan and married him. They remained married until she died. • Shortly before her own death, she wrote a mystery called “Curtain” in which Hercule Poirot himself dies. It shot directly to the top of the bestseller list, and Peirots obituary appeared in the “New York Times.” After her death in 1976, her publisher announced there were two more Agatha Christie books yet unpublished. One details the death of her other creation, Miss Marple. The other was her own auto-biography. • At the time of her death in 1976, she had written 147 short stories, 15 plays, and 90 novels which have sold over 2 billion copies in over 40 languages and still sell millions of copies a year. She’s the most widely translated author in history. Her publisher claims that only the Bible and Shakespeare have sold more copies. Her play “The Mousetrap” opened in 1952 and is still running, making it the longest-running play ever staged. Her play “Murder on the Orient Express” was turned into one of the most successful movies ever made in Britain. She has been dubbed “the patron saint of insomniacs.”

HOLLYWOOD — Big news in Hollywood ... Jack Nicholson's making a new film! His last film was the 2010 dud "How Do You Know," with Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson ($100 million cost and $49 million gross). The film's failure must have been a big disappointment for Jack, because he hadn't announced any new projects since then. When asked in 2013 if he'd retired, he said, "I haven't quit acting; I just quit hitting on women." It was known he had trouble memorizing and remembering lines, and many speculated he was suffering from early stages of dementia. But apparently Jack approached Brad Grey at Paramount Pictures with the idea that he play the kooky father in the remake of the hit German/Austrian comedy "Toni Erdman," which scored big at Cannes and was nominated for a best foreign film Oscar this year. Paramount moved on his idea and has already cast Kristin Wiig to play his daughter. *** Netflix is moving full steam ahead with the $105 million production of Martin Scorsese's "The Irishman," with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Bobby Cannavale and Harvey Keitel. It's about a mob hit man who recalls his possible involvement with the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa. Scorsese is currently working on "The Devil in the City," with Leonardo DiCaprio, and "Killers of the Flower Moon," which also will star DiCaprio and De Niro. Pacino, meanwhile, has finished playing Tennessee Williams in "God Looked Away," which, judging from reviews, will not hit Broadway without being reworked. He was represented at The Tribeca Film festival with "Dabka," with Evan Peters and Melanie Griffith, and is working on the crime drama "Hangman," with Brittany Snow (of "Pitch Perfect").
Jack Nicholson Warner Bros.
*** Merchant Ivory Productions is celebrating the 30th anniversary of "Maurice," originally released in 1987. A 26-year-old Hugh Grant has a love affair with 29-year-old James Wilby. It also has Ben Kingsley (then 43) and Rupert Graves (then 23). The film has been upgraded with a 4K scan, new magnetic soundtrack and a new 5.1 audio mix. Director James Ivory hopes a new generation of moviegoers will pay to see "Maurice," despite its being available on DVD and for downloading. It hits big screens June 2. Mark May 26 on your calendar. That's when you'll be able to see the long-awaited "Baywatch," with Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and, yes, even David Hasselhoff. "Baywatch" is up against Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales," and newly single Brad Pitt in "War Machine," with Ben Kingsley, Tilda Swenton and Topher Grace. Can "Baywatch" sink "Pirates," or will Brad Pitt's "War Machine" blow up the box office? (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
Sara Rue
Q: Can you tell me what Sara Rue has been up to? I loved watching her on "Bones," but now that it's over, I wonder what she's doing next. — Hailey H., via email A: Sara has been going nonstop since breaking into the biz when she was only 8 years old. She has starred in a number of series, including "Popular," "Less Than Perfect," "The Big Bang Theory," "Malibu Country" and "Rules of Engagement." On May 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, you can catch her in the Hallmark original movie called "All for Love," where Sara plays romance novelist Jo Parker, whose latest book about a woman falling in love with a Navy SEAL falls flat with her publisher. They send her to boot camp for research; the retired SEAL (played by Steve Bacic) who runs the camp is gorgeous; and we can assume that romance ensues. I spoke with Sara about her latest role, and she told me: "The movie is more about finding your inner confidence. We as women in society are constantly told we're not that strong, we're not as brave as men. And I think, sadly, that is something that's been inherently pummeled into a lot of women and young girls in our society. So, when she starts doing these boot camp things, at first she's like: 'Oh, I can't ... Oh, I'm not touching that! Oh, I'm not getting dirty.' And then she realizes how empowering it is. The fear of failing is scary, and I think once you realize it's OK to fail as long as you're trying your best, that's what's most important. That's when you really succeed." *** Q: I keep reading things about "The Looming Tower," and I can't wait for it to premiere. Can you give me any
Hulu
scoops about it? — Tyler W., Ann Arbor, Michigan A: Based on Lawrence Wright's Pulitzer Prize-winning 9/11 expose, "The Looming Tower" will air in 10 episodes on Hulu. It traces the rising threat of Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaida, and takes a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI may have inadvertently set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Aside from such Hollywood heavy hitters as Jeff Daniels and Peter Sarsgaard, it was recently announced that Alec Baldwin has joined the cast as CIA director George Tenet. *** Q: I loved your interview with Jason Isaacs earlier this year. Can you tell me what else he has coming up? — Jill S., via email A: Jason has been chosen to captain the next starship, playing Capt. Lorca in "Star Trek: Discovery" for CBS All Access. According to "Deadline," the series "will feature a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers." * Tai chi, and yoga to a lesser degree, improved cognitive function. There were only a few studies done on tai chi, but they all agreed on the result. The bonus about tai chi is that its no-impact, gentle movements are suitable for seniors who can't do more difficult activities.
STUDY: EXERCISE BOOSTS COGNITIVE FUNCTION
* Exercise between 45 and 60 minutes in duration, or moderate to vigorous exercise for any amount of time, improved cognitive function. Even if it's only a few minutes, any amount of exercise helps reduce risk for heart disease, build strong bones, control weight and improve our moods. The more exercise days per week, the better, ideally totaling 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity, such as walking, tennis or cycling.
Australian scientists at the Research Institute for Sport and Exercise at Canberra analyzed 39 studies to explore whether structured exercise really does improve cognitive function in adults over age 50.
Don't forget strength training, which can include weight lifting (start with items around the house and increase the weight when you can do eight repetitions), chair dips (pushing yourself off a chair seat) and leg raises.
Results of the study, printed in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, say yes, it does. And it doesn't matter whether it's aerobics, resistance training or tai chi, or any combination of those. Even if there is existing mild cognitive dysfunction, moderate-intensity exercise can help.
The best news of all is that warm weather is here. We can be out and about now, not limited to only indoor exercise.
It's thought that exercise increases the blood supply to the brain, along with oxygen, reducing the effects of aging and giving us better better memory and learning skills.
The Village to Village Network is a growing group of organizations around the country with one main focus: to help seniors age in place. What we need, they have. Whether it's transportation, social opportunities or community and volunteering links, the VTV Network has the resources to make our senior years better.
Here are some details gleaned from all those studies:

We have been together for 27 years. He has smoked cigarettes daily for at least 30-35 years. Recently, he had an attack where he couldn't breathe, and we took him to the clinic, where they did a breathing test. My 15-yearold son and I watched as my husband agonized to get through the test. His father also smoked for many years, and now is on oxygen for COPD — he is miserable every day. My husband quit smoking about two years ago using Chantix, but he started smoking again shortly after that. I do not want to watch him suffer like his father. I don't understand how he sees what his father is going through and still continues down that road. I know it is not too late for him to stop, even though I am pretty sure he has already done some serious damage to his body. What can I do to get my husband to quit for good. — S.W. ANSWER: Quitting smoking is perhaps the most difficult recommendation to follow. There are some definite red flags in your husband's case as you have described it, but some reason to hope as well. The fact that your husband can see the effects of smoking on his father but has not successfully quit is worrisome. On the other hand, quitting now will greatly slow down damage to his lungs. Similarly, although he restarted quickly after quitting, he was able to quit. He needs to know that most people who quit successfully have tried several times to quit in the past and went back. It's worth trying again, and he knows that he is able to quit. Varenicline (Chantix), bupropion (Zyban and Wellbutrin) and nicotine replacement therapies definitely are helpful for most people in quitting. I am sure his doctor will be happy to partner with you, his family, in helping him quit. The American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Health Canada and the American Heart Association all have helpful information for people trying to quit as well. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: After two years of seeing several doctors and being misdiagnosed and treated with wrong medications, my 27-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. Her joint pain has been constant. What kind of long-term damage has been done during this time? — A.F. ANSWER: Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin condition, with well-known plaques — raised red patches with silvery scales or flaked skin — most commonly seen over the elbows, knees or on the back. Only a minority of people with psoriasis will ever develop psoriatic arthritis, but you have to have psoriasis to get psoriatic arthritis. Sometimes, the arthritis shows up before the skin lesions, making the diagnosis difficult. Unfortunately, damage to the joints can happen early in the course of psoriatic arthritis, but only an X-ray can show the extent of damage. Your daughter may need aggressive treatment. A rheumatologist experienced in psoriatic arthritis is essential. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. BREAKING MEDICAL NEWS Modest Excess Weight May Lead to Premature Death People with a history of being overweight (BMI = 25.0 to 29.9 kg/m2) have a 6 percent increased risk of premature death, according to a new study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers looked at three cohorts of health professionals totaling 225,072 participants and found that those who fell within the overweight or obese categories were at a higher risk for premature death from any cause, compared with those who were normal weight. Obese participants had a much
higher risk at 24 to 73 percent increased risk for premature death, compared with those who were normal weight.
Eating Soy Instead of Dairy Benefits Health and Economy Plant-based dietary patterns that exclude dairy and include soy prevent major chronic diseases and impart a large financial savings on health care, according to new research presented at a conference in Brussels. As part of a systematic review, study participants who replaced dairy products with soy reduced their risks for several
types of cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. The presenter, a professor of health economics, emphasized the gains were not only in health but also in the economy.
Obesity Increases Risk for Heart Disease Obesity contributes to heart disease and diabetes risks despite recent claims of “metabolically healthy obese” classifications, according to a study published in The Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. Researchers compared BMI and metabolic risk factors for 6,238 participants as part of the Danish prospective Inter99 study. Study criteria categorized participants with no risk factors as “met-
abolically healthy” and those with one or more risk factors as “metabolically unhealthy.” Those who were both obese and metabolically healthy increased their risk for heart disease, compared with those who were normal weight. Most participants initially labeled as metabolically healthy developed at least one risk factor after five years. These findings do no support previous conclusions that obese individuals are not at risk for heart disease. but it seems to me that the answer is clear: Don't be a jerk. If you're at the ballpark and you feel the need to stand up, throw a bag of peanuts at a center fielder and call him a racial slur ... don't do that. That makes you a jerk — or worse. I can understand why people around the guy didn't tell him to sit down and shut up — after all, this was a ballgame, not a United Airlines flight — but the answer to much of society's problems is really that simple: Don't be a jerk. Why can't you just enjoy the game?
IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY Don't be too hard on yourself down South. The whole racist thing has never been exclusive to your redneck part of the woods. Take Boston — if you can find the exit ramp — for example. For decades, fair or not (pronounced "nawt" on Beacon Hill), the city has garnered a reputation for being more than a bit unkind toward African-Americans. But don't kid yourself. If you're an adult, you know better. I'm getting tired of the whole "Boston is racist" narrative. You know that racism isn't as neat and packaged as that. The conditions for racism exist anywhere a bunch of people who look alike suddenly come into contact with a few people who don't look like them. Racism occurs when a few of the people from the majority act like jerks toward the minority. It's really that simple. I'm tired of sports writers who pass the buck, who continue to claim that racism is such a head scratcher, something so complicated and complex and above their pay grade. I'll take a stab at the Adam Jones situation and racism at the ballpark. I'm no Gandhi or Tibetan monk,
This could have been a column about the magnificent April Major League Baseball had. Bryce Harper set records, once again establishing that we may be witnessing one of the all-time greats! Madison Bumgarner hits two homers on opening day; Aaron Judge is 8 feet tall, hits homers off the moon and wears the number 99 in the Bronx! Players dive over catchers to score runs! The Mets are a train wreck! But no. We instead tackle the stupidity of a bunch of fans taunting Adam Jones at a Baltimore Orioles game. Some of you reading this are disgusted that I even bring it up. "So what," you may be thinking. "Life is tough. People are mean. That's life. That's how it will always be." If that's how you're thinking, let me show you just how interactive a newspaper can be. Grab each corner, roll it up and smack yourself in the face. No! It doesn't have to be this way for Adam Jones or anybody. Nobody is telling you how to think, nobody is even telling you what to say in private ... but it doesn't mean we have to hear it at the ballpark. I would never sell them, I'm wondering what they are worth? — Carol, Loveland, Colorado A: I found your books referenced in "Collecting Little Golden Books: A Collector's Identification and Price Guide," by Steve Santi and published by Krause Books. According to Santi, your books were all published in 1989 and are worth about $5 each.
LITTLE GOLDEN BOOKS Q: When I was a kid during the 1980s, my aunt Susan bought me several Little Golden Books in the Land Series. They are "Welcome to Little Golden Book Land," "Poky Little Puppy's Special Day," "Shy Little Kitten's Secret Place," "Saggy Baggy Elephant No Place for Me," "Tootie and Katy Caboose" and "Tawny Scrawny Lion Saves the Day." I learned to read using these books. Although
*** Q: At an estate sale in Atlanta, I purchased an unusual teapot crafted in a Della Robbia design and issued by Roseville Pottery. I paid $100 for the teapot, which appears to be in excellent condition. I bought it because of its design and wonder if you can tell me more about the piece. — Betty, Chattanooga, Tennessee A: You purchased a real bargain. Frederick H. Rhead designed this line in 1905 as part of the Rozane Wares, and named it for a 15th-century Florentine family famous for their enameled terra cotta, or faience. The Della Robbia group is the most complex and diverse collection of the Roseville pieces, as well as the rarest. Della Robbia was a trendsetter during the Arts and Crafts movement.

DEAR PHIL: Max has formed a negative association with the leash. It's not your fault, but for some reason Max just does not see the leash as a good time. And since dogs are all about having a good time, he's resisting. The thing to do here is build a positive association with the leash. Here's one method, courtesy of the AKC:
PUPPY CAN'T STAND LEASH DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My mixed-breed puppy "Max" is very playful — until I put a leash on him. Then it's a battle to get him to walk with me. He will sit down and not move. All I can do is pick him up and carry him, but he's getting bigger. What can I do? — Phil in Alexandria, Virginia
?
Teach him a "cue" — Fill your pocket with small treats (you can even cut them smaller to reduce calories) and spend one or two indoor training sessions teaching Max a special cue, like "yes," clicking your tongue, or using a clicker. Each time you cue, toss him a treat. Do this until he responds enthusiastically to the cue even without a treat. Reintroduce his leash — Have him wear the collar and leash in supervised sessions around the house; don't hold the leash, just let him wear it. Be supportive during the process. Reinforce the "come" command — While he's on the leash, go across the room and call him. Give a treat (with the cue) when he obeys. Rinse and repeat.

SALAD DAYS One of the best ways to showcase all the complexities of vegetables is in a salad. While a salad seems like a simple dish, combining vegetables with sweet, bitter, crunchy, soft, peppery and mild avors with a wonderful dressing and fresh herbs brings this simple dish to a new level. There is some debate about whether cooked or raw vegetables are better to consume. The short answer is ... don't choose, have both!
2. To keep vegetables crunchy and colors bright, place vegetables in a bowl ďŹ lled with cold water and the remaining 1/2 tablespoon salt for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove vegetables from water and drain. Place in a large salad bowl and set aside.
DINNING OUT VEGETARIAN
Vitamin C, also a powerful antioxidant found in many of the vegetables mentioned, can be destroyed by heat.
Raw vegetables: 1 crown broccoli, leaves removed, cut into orets 1 cup baby carrots 6 radishes, trimmed, thinly sliced 1 cup, whole red or yellow cherry tomatoes, cut in half 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup fresh mint, parsley, basil and chervil, torn Toss raw vegetables, vinegar and pepper. Combine with cooked vegetables. Sprinkle with fresh mint, parsley, basil and chervil, if desired. Serve with a drizzle of Spicy Tomato Dressing (recipe follows), if desired.
The All-American Chain Restaurant These tips should help you order at any restaurant. However, here are a few special suggestions for some common restaurants:
SPICY TOMATO DRESSING
• Ruby Tuesday: Huge salad bar loaded with fruits and vegetables. They also have a veggie burger (hold the cheese).
To get the best of both worlds and to put an end to the debate, it is recommended to alternate consumption of raw and cooked vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. This recipe for Springtime Salad with Spicy Tomato Dressing contains both raw and cooked vegetables. There's no debate that this dish is great!
Lycopene content in tomatoes is actually increased when tomatoes are cooked. Lycopene is responsible for the tomato's red color. Studies have linked high lycopene intake with lower risk of cancer and heart attacks. It also is a powerful antioxidant.
Cooking carrots increases their beta carotene content. Beta carotene is an antioxidant that the body converts to vitamin A, another antioxidant. Vitamin A helps promote normal vision, protect from infection and regulate the immune system. There may be additional antioxidant activity in cooked spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage and peppers. The cooking method found to be the best for preserving antioxidants was roasting or steaming. Frying is not recommended because the antioxidants get used up in the frying process. The case for eating raw vegtables: In other instances, raw vegetables are better. For example, polyphenols, yet

another antioxidant, are lost when carrots are cooked. In broccoli, heat damages the enzyme myrosinase. Myrosinase breaks down compounds in the broccoli to form another compound called sulforaphane, which may kill precancerous cells.
Here's the case for cooking vegetables:
Antioxidants help prevent or repair damage to body cells, which is important for decreasing risk of cancer. They are also thought to improve immune function.

SPRINGTIME SALAD This salad keeps well in the refrigerator and makes a delicious vegetarian lunch salad or a side dish for dinner. Use leftover cooked and reheated vegetables, if desired, or select vegetables of your choice for the raw ingredients. It makes 6 to 8 servings. Cooked vegetables: 1/2 tablespoon salt for boiling water, plus 1/2 tablespoon for ice water bath 1/2 pound green or white asparagus 1/2 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half 1 cup fresh or frozen corn 1/2 medium purple onion, thinly sliced 1 cup sweet peas, fresh or frozen 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1. Add salt to a large pot of water and bring to a boil. Wash, remove tough stalks on the asparagus and cut in half. Add all of the vegetables to the boiling water and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.
3 large, ripe tomatoes Juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon or lime 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 to 3 teaspoons hot sauce 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil Peel, seed and cut tomatoes into quarters. Using a food processer or blender, mix together tomatoes, salt, pepper and hot sauce. With the blender or processor on low, slowly add the olive oil down the feeding tube until mixture thickens slightly and is well-combined. Drizzle over salad. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. Her new cookbook is "The Kitchen Diva's Diabetic Cookbook." CHAINS AND FAST FOOD OPTIONS
• Chili's: Ask them to make you fajitas with grilled vegetables and rice with a side of beans. Other options include a dinner salad and the Guiltless Tomato Basil Pasta. • Pizza Hut (or any pizza place): Veggie pizza (hold the cheese) • California Pizza Kitchen: Veggie calzone (hold the cheese) • Houston Steak House: Excellent veggie burger (hold the cheese)
• Fuddruckers: Veggie burger (hold the cheese) • Johnny Rockets: Steamliner Veggie Burger (hold the cheese) Fast Food While fast food is often a less-than-healthful option, sometimes it can work out just ďŹ ne. If you're stuck on a long road trip or caught with only ďŹ ve minutes to spare before your meeting, vegan options are available at many fastfood restaurants. • Chipotle: Beans and rice burrito (hold the guacamole, hold the cheese and sour cream) • Subway: Veggie Delite sub on whole wheat or Veggie Delite salad (hold the cheese, hold the mayo, light on the oil). • Blimpie: VegiMax, (hold the cheese and mayo, hold the oil)

* You might be surprised to learn that in the United States, there are more people employed in the solar-energy industry than there are employees in the coal, oil and gas industries combined.
* According to Reed Hastings, the CEO of Netflix, the biggest competition faced by the online streaming service isn't HBO, Hulu or Amazon — it's sleep. He recently told stockholders that when viewers are deciding whether or not to watch Netflix, the alternative they're usually considering is going to bed, not watching another service.
* Economists aren't known for their optimism, but in the summer of 1930, one of the 20th century's most influential economists made a bold prediction. Even as the Great Depression was gaining momentum, John Maynard Keynes declared that by the year 2030, the typical workweek in developed nations would be just 15 hours long. It's not looking good so far, but we do have 17 years to go.
* In 2014, it became illegal in Russia to use profanity in the theater, in films and at other cultural events. * Before American music icon Ella Fitzgerald became famous as the First Lady of Song and the Queen of Jazz, she started out -- as so many performers have -- at Harlem's Apollo Theater. She was 17 years old, and she didn't intend to sing; she had planned to perform a dance number. Before it was her turn to perform, though, there was a dance act so good that she felt intimidated, so she changed her plan. It was a good idea, evidently -- not only did she win first prize for the night, she went on to take home one of the inaugural Grammy Awards, as well as 12 more over the course of her career. She also was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement.
* Those who study such things say that a monarch butterfly can fly a whopping 620 miles without stopping for food. * You may have never heard the term "reduplicative rhymes," but you're certainly familiar with them. "Razzle-dazzle" is one. Also, "hocus pocus," "fuddy-duddy," "roly-poly," "dillydally," "higgledy-piggledy" and "chick flick." Interestingly, Chick Flick also was the name of a baseball manager — he managed Rustic Tavern, a semi-professional team in the 1940s and '50s. *** Thought for the Day: "Words are like leaves; and where they most abound / Much fruit of sense beneath is rarely found." — Alexander Pope (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

OUTDOOR FEST FUN FOR ALL AGES Open windows and doors wide to welcome in warm weather, friends and outdoor activities. Relaxing weekends are ahead and made for gathering people together for a picnic at a city park or right on your own turf. A family-style get-together can celebrate and kick off this longed-for new season with a superlative gathering with the people you know and get to know starting with this long Memorial Day weekend. Keep it low-key and relax in the knowledge that being together with family, friends and newcomers in your community is the key ingredient that makes the event especially fun and memorable and it's the conversations, giggles, hugs, off-kilter moments and laughter that become the lasting impressions children cherish.

Here are some ideas for prepping a fest for all ages: Get everyone involved — Once you decide on a place and time, divide prep responsibilities for salads, veggies, desserts, games and entertainment among individuals and families. For example, if cousin Jessica plays the guitar, ask her to bring it along for a rousing songfest. If Uncle Pete plays the fiddle, you'll no doubt get everyone dancing. Get kids' assistance in shucking the corn (match tasks to ages and skill levels) or encourage others to stage a humorous play or a bicycle-and-pet parade. Beverage center — Fill a small kiddie wading pool with bags of crushed ice. Bury juices and sparkling water, watermelon and water balloons in the ice. While drinks and fruit stay chilled, the balloons will be ready for some wet cool-down fun after the meal. Fun and Games — Use games to create an atmosphere of activity. Setting equipment out encourages people to participate and interact. Bring your ping-pong table outside and create a tourney grid to keep players and fans engaged in lively competition. Set out a bubble brew with bubblers, chalk for hopscotch, jump ropes, baseball gloves — why not play a round or two of musical chairs? Fest pics — Snap some candid and group photos with people posed in a large empty frame hanging from a tree branch. Plant a "Family Tree" — Do you have a favorite picnicking spot? Somewhere at Aunt Chloe's vineyard or in grandfather's backyard? Plant a "family tree" this Memorial Day weekend in honor of a loved one at the location you choose and watch it grow over the years, right along with the children who planted it. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide.
