"Call Jacob the Plumber"

• There are many species of fireflies, and each one flashes its lights in a particular pattern in order to attract mates of their own species. One type of firefly called Photuris is called “femme fatale fireflies” because the female will expertly mimic the flashing pattern of other species in order to lure a potential mate, whom she then devours. • Often a flock of birds will post one bird as a sentry to keep a lookout for predators as the rest of the flock feeds. Birds bring the sentry tasty morsels in order to reward it for its work. Some sentry birds give a false alarm when no predator is evident just at the exact same moment it’s seen a juicy morsel another bird has found. The birds drop what they’re doing upon hearing the warning cry, and the sentry swoops in to claim the treat. • Capuchin monkeys practice the same deceit: when the monkey acting as a lookout sees another monkey finding something yummy, it gives the call warning of attack. The monkey promptly scampers up a tree, giving the lookout the opportunity to snatch the tasty morsel for himself.

MIMICS • One type of octopus is an expert imitator. Called the mimic octopus, it can configure its body position and adjust its coloring to look exactly like other animals or to blend into the background. It uses this talent to get closer to its prey, and also to avoid being prey. By imitating a female crab, it can get close enough to a male crab to grab it and eat it. When approached by a carnivorous damselfish, it can mimic a banded sea snake, which preys upon damselfish. • Australia is home to a remarkable bird called the lyrebird. The male of this species attracts mates by fanning his tail feathers while singing a courtship song. Lyrebirds are excellent mimics and can repeat

the calls of other birds perfectly. Females seem to be attracted to the male lyrebirds that have the most complicated songs, so the males incorporate trills, warbles, various bird calls, and even the sounds of babies crying, jackhammers pounding, chain saws, car alarms, barking dogs, car horns, and other sounds of human settlements.

IMPOSTERS • There’s a plant in Australia called the casuarina. Its seeds are small and fleshy, rich in oils and nutrients. Harvester ants love to collect the seeds, store them in their underground larders, and eat them once they have sprouted. Also living in Australia is a type of stick insect. A female walking stick lays eggs that just happen to look identical to casuarina seeds. She drops them randomly on the ground underneath the casuarina tree where she lives. Ants come along and collect her eggs along with the casuarina seeds, carrying them back to their storage unit. When the eggs hatch, the baby walking stick looks exactly like a newly hatched ant. The walking stick simply walks out of the ant nest and climbs the nearest casuarina tree to start the cycle all over again. (cont’d) • The male digger bee is always on the lookout for a female digger bee. Occasionally when the male digger bee finds a female, it turns out not to be a female digger bee at all. Instead, it’s actually a collection of hundreds of tiny blister beetle larva, who have gathered together and formed themselves into an exact replica of a female digger bee. When the male digger bee arrives looking for a romantic encounter, the tiny blister beetle larvae jump onto the body of the bee. The confused bee then flies away, looking for a real female. When he finds a female, the blister beetle larvae have just enough time to abandon the male digger bee and transfer to the female. When she’s done mating, she flies to her underground nest where she has filled cells with pollen in order to feed her offspring. While she is laying eggs, the blister beetles move into her larder, where they feast on pollen and grow into adults. • Cuckoos are famous for laying their eggs in another bird’s nest. But the cuckoo finch of Africa has perfected this subterfuge. When it lays its eggs in an-

(954) 779-3000 www.ThePremierSmile.com other bird’s next, the eggs look exactly like the real eggs of the host bird. When the host returns, she can see that there are imposter eggs in the nest, but she is unable to tell which are her eggs and which are the imposters. She ends up hatching all the eggs, but because the cuckoo eggs hatch earlier than her own eggs, the cuckoo chicks eat the majority of the food she brings back. • Bats home in on their prey by using echolocation, which is a series of rapid clicks that bounce back to the bat’s ears and indicate the location of prey. But the Grote’s tiger moth outwits bats by producing clicks of its own that jam the bat’s receiver, confusing it for the precious seconds needed for the moth to drop like a stone to the forest floor. (continued next page)

CAMOUFLAGE • The appropriately named bird-dropping spider uses its clever disguise as camouflage. No one is going pay attention to a pile of bird poop. Other insects wander by the pile of apparent bird poop, which promptly pounces on them and eats them. • Birds generally avoid eating ants because they taste bad. One species of treehopper bugs living in Central America carries around an extra flap of tissue on its back that looks exactly like an ant. Any bird looking down upon the treehopper would see nothing but an ant. Underneath the ant-like decoration, the treehopper looks just like other ordinary treehoppers, safely protected by its disguise. • One type of lizard found in Borneo has flaps of skin that act like glider wings, allowing it to fall in a controlled manner from the tops of trees to the next tree over. These gliding lizards are expertly camouflaged so that they look exactly like dead leaves falling from the treetops.

DECOYS • One type of spider found in Taiwan builds a lifesize model of itself in order to act as a decoy. Using pellets made from the remains of insects, old leaves, empty egg sacks, and silk, this spider constructs a replica of itself. When predatory wasps attack, the spider is safely hidden away while the wasp attacks the decoy. • The yellow-rumped thornbill is an Australian bird

whose nests are often raided by a bird called the currawong. Currawongs always attack from above, dropping down on a thornbill nest in order to feast on the eggs. The defense strategy of the thornbill is to build a two-tiered nest: the top floor is a decoy nest, which contains no eggs. The bottom floor, hidden from the currawong’s view, is the real nest where the eggs are safe.

* You might be aware of the fact that penguins mate for life, but did you know that before they mate, there's a proposal? It's true — a penguin will spend a significant amount of time searching for the perfect pebble to offer to its prospective mate.

* It was beloved American author of Western stories Louis L'Amour who made the following sage observation: "A wise man fights to win, but he is twice a fool who has no plan for possible defeat." * You might be surprised to learn that Canada has more lakes than all the rest of the world combined. * In France, writing a bad check is not just bad form — it's illegal. Violators of the "cheque sans provision" law are subject to criminal fines and can be banned from writing checks for up to five years. * You might be shocked if you came across the term "lust-house" in, say, a newspaper. You shouldn't be, though — it doesn't mean what you think it means. The term comes to us (unsurprisingly) from German, where the word might refer to either a country house or a tavern with a beer garden. * There was a time when the game of checkers was commonly — and condescendingly — called "chess for ladies." * Avian veterinarians agree: One of the main health problems faced by pet parrots is obesity. Evidently, Polly wants more than just a cracker. * It's interesting to speculate whether American singer, songwriter and record producer Kid Rock would have met with as much success had he kept the name he was given at birth, Bob Ritchie.

* Swedish chemist, inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel is best known for inventing dynamite — and for using his fortune to institute the Nobel Prizes after he was condemned as a "merchant of death" for profiting from the sale of arms. HOLLYWOOD — Why did Tom Cruise do a "Mummy" movie? Brendan Fraser's "The Mummy" (1999) cost $80 million to make and grossed $416 million. His 2001 sequel, "The Mummy Returns," cost $98 million and grossed $433 million. But "The Scorpion King," with Dwayne Johnson instead of Fraser, cost just $60 million but only grossed $165 million. His sequel went straight to video, as did "Scorpion King 3," with Billy Zane and Ron Perlman, and "Scorpion King 4," with Lou Ferrigno. Universal wanted to revive the franchise, and Cruise, currently filming "Mission Impossible 6" for a July 2018 release, is getting too old for hardcore action films and needed a new franchise to accommodate his advancing age (he'll be 55 on July 3). "The Mummy" has always been played by men (Boris Karloff was the first in 1932), but this time "The Mummy," opening June 9 in IMAX and 3D, is a woman. Sofia Boutella plays opposite Cruise, as an ancient princess awakened from her crypt beneath the dessert. Opening the same day as "The Mummy" is "The Hero," with Sam Elliott and Katherine Ross (Elliott is a washedup Western actor who changes his priorities after being diagnosed with cancer); "It Comes at Night" (a horror story about a man and his family under siege), with Joel Egerton and Elvis Presley's granddaughter, Riley Keough; and "47 Meters Down" (about two sisters trapped in a shark cage), with Mandy Moore and Claire Holt. Meanwhile, Cruise's ex, Nicole Kidman, has joined "Aquaman," with Jason Momoa in the title role, along with Amber Heard (former Mrs. Johnny Depp), Willem Dafoe, Dolph Lungren and Patrick Wilson, due December 2018.

Ryan Seacrest Paul Drinkwater/NBC

*** When NBC committed to "The World of Dance," with Jennifer Lopez and Derek Hough, they withdrew from bidding for "American Idol," and ABC jumped on it. Coincidentally, "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest has been named permanent co-host, with Kelly Ripa, of the daily morning show now named "Live With Kelly and Ryan." Call him "Flyin' Ryan," as he's bound to rack up frequent-flyer mileage doing "Kelly and Ryan" Monday through Thursday in New York, "Idol" tryouts at Disney World in Florida and "Idol" shows in Hollywood. Oh yes, and he's still doing his radio show. Also spreading his wings is Andy Cohan, whose show "Watch What Happens" will be syndicated by Fox, and he'll also host the Fox reboot of "The Love Connection." *** "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," a live theatrical experience, has been selling out in London, despite being a full play in two parts. Ticket holders see both shows either in one day or on two consecutive nights. The show hits Broadway in April 2018. No word yet if it will be in two parts, as in London, or one complete show. Methinks you'd have to be pretty "Pottered" to sit through two stage shows and pay twice the ticket prices! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Laurie Davidson

Q: I have been hearing about a new version of "The Tick" being produced. I loved the Patrick Warburton version. Can you give me any information? -- Billy B., via email

ELLEN VON UNWERTH

*** A: Amazon Studios announced a premiere date for its original series "The Tick," which stars Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick, as well as Griffin Newman, Jackie Earle Haley, Valorie Curry, Scott Speiser and Brendan Hines. The superhero comedy centers on an underdog accountant with zero powers (Newman) who comes to realize his city is owned by a global supervillain long thought dead. As he struggles to uncover this conspiracy, he falls in league with a strange blue superhero. "The Tick" will premiere Friday, Aug. 25, on Amazon Prime Video. The seven-episode series was created, written and executive-produced by Ben Edlund ("Gotham," "Supernatural," "The Tick" [1994]). *** Q: I saw a commercial on TNT for a new series about William Shakespeare. Do you know anything about it? -- DeeDee F., via Facebook A: As an English- and theater-degree holder, I can say unequivocally that I am excited about this one. "Will" premieres Monday, July 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT. This new original series takes viewers back in time to Elizabethan England to tell the wild, rowdy story of young William Shakespeare. Newcomer Laurie Davidson plays the title role in this period drama told in a bold, contemporary style and played to a modern soundtrack that exposes all of Shakespeare's recklessness, lustful temptations and tortured brilliance. Also starring are Olivia DeJonge, Ewen Bremner, Colm Meaney, Mattias Inwood, Jamie Campbell Bower and Jasmin Savoy Brown.

Q: A few years ago I saw the movie adaptation of the best-selling book "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara and Robin Wright. I haven't heard anything about the development of the rest of the books in the series. Have they given up on it? -- Brandon M., via email A: The director's mantle has been passed to Fede Alvarez ("Evil Dead" and "Don't Breathe") for "The Girl in the Spider's Web," the second book in Stieg Larsson's series, and this means an all-new cast as well. As of this writing, Fede is eyeing Claire Foy in the role of Lisbeth Salander, the anti-establishment computer expert who savagely rights wrongs. If cast, this would be a major departure for Claire, as most American viewers are accustomed to the talented actress as the prim and proper Queen Elizabeth in the Netflix original series "The Crown." The movie is set for release in October 2018. This reboot comes hot on the heels of news that Fede Alvarez, after "Spider's Web" wraps, will begin work on the sequel to the 1986 cult hit "Labyrinth," which starred David Bowie as the Goblin King, as well as Jennifer Connelly and a slew of creatures from Jim Henson's Creature Shop. you're still to take all of the drugs, and if you need blood tests for monitoring. * Don't forget your over-the-counter drugs, even if you rarely take them. One of them might be contraindicated for mixing with your regular prescriptions. At least one kind of over-the-counter drug isn't thought to be safe for people with high blood pressure.

PRESCRIPTION DRUGS DON'T ALWAYS MIX According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, one in every 250 emergency room visits was because of adverse drug reactions. Seniors were well-represented, coming in at 30 percent of the total. The numbers will no doubt continue to rise as we age and end up in the offices of more specialists. Most of us take at least one prescription drug, and some take more than 10. Here are a few steps you can take to keep safe from adverse drug reactions: * When you visit a doctor, bring along all your medications. Nowadays, many local doctors are hooked up via computer and can check your records with other medical offices, but not all. Unless you know you can make a detailed, accurate list, load up a shoebox with all your prescription drugs and take them with you. Ask whether

* Go to the same pharmacy every time. Your drug records will be stored in one place, and a pharmacist will notice if you're taking certain drugs that will be combined with a new one. He or she will be able to tell you how to take the drug, and can verify what's in the container. (Some labels describe the pills inside by color and shape.) Ask whether a new one can be taken at the same time as the others. * Keep a chart at home, especially if you're starting a new drug that will go along with other ones.

KEEPING YOUR COOL THIS SUMMER If there's one important thing to remember about summer and seniors, it's that we don't always know when we're becoming overheated. Many of us don't sweat, our circulation is often compromised, and medical conditions (as well as the drugs we take for them) can mask the dangers of heat. Dehydration and hypothermia (heat stroke) can afflict us before we're aware that it's happening, and that can be deadly.

After

To be safe and cool this summer: * Stay in the air conditioning as much as possible. Yes, air conditioning can give us a chill, but it's better to drape a sweater across your shoulders in an air-conditioned room than be in the heat. If your home isn't cooled, make it a point to go to an air-conditioned space during the heat of the day. Try the library, movie theater, indoor mall or senior center, perhaps a different one every afternoon of the week. Call the local aging agency to ask about cooling stations. * Do outdoor errands before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. * Find out if the local senior center or fire department will be handing out free fans this year. Don't wait until the fans are all gone. * Drink enough liquids, and this means water. Avoid caffeine, which is dehydrating. Try fresh fruit or unsweetened popsicles. To be sure you get enough water, drink by the clock: at least a few swallows every 15 minutes. Don't wait until you're thirsty. Keep a water bottle next to your TV chair or on the counter so you'll see it. * If you don't have air conditioning, ask your doctor if you're taking any drugs that are affected by high heat. * Wear light, loose clothing, like cotton. Take off your hat when you're indoors. Here's to a safe, cool summer for all of us.

COLONOSCOPY IS BEST TEST FOR COLON CANCER DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband, who is 73 and otherwise in good health, had a colonoscopy in the summer of 2012 and was told that because no polyps or any problems were found, he did not need another test for 10 years. This October, he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which has spread to the abdomen and omentum. He also had seven polyps removed during his latest examination. My question is, How likely is it that such a virulent cancer could grow in such a short time? I would be resigned to the diagnosis if I didn't feel that something was missed in the initial exam. Also, I had a colonoscopy done by the same doctor this summer and also was told that I need not come back for 10 years. Should I be concerned? — H.B. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. What happened is very unusual. All guidelines agree that in a person with a normal colonoscopy, a repeat in 10 years is recommended. A repeat in five years would have been recommended if a low-risk polyp had been found, earlier with high-risk or multiple polyps. I haven't personally seen a case like your husband's, where an advanced cancer presents less than 10 years after a normal colonoscopy. This should happen in fewer than 1 in 1,000 people. There are several reasons why it can happen. The most important is that even a properly done colonoscopy misses polyps. Very small polyps (less than 5 mm) can be missed 26 percent of the time, but large polyps (greater than 10 mm) are missed only 2 percent of the time. Although the colonoscopy is the best screening test we have for colon cancer, it isn't perfect. It's also possible that he just had a very fast-growing cancer.

BREAKING MEDICAL NEWS Avoiding Red and Processed Meat Beneficial Even After Colon Cancer Diagnosis People with stage III colon cancer have better outcomes when they avoid certain meat products, consume more plants, and have a healthy body weight, according to a new study from the University of California San Francisco. Researchers analyzed the diet and lifestyles of 992 stage III colon cancer patients over a period of seven years. Those with a body mass index between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2 who exercised and followed a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and low in red/processed meats had longer overall survival and disease-free survival rates, compared with patients who did not meet these parameters.

Hypertension Increases Risk of Death from Heart Disease High blood pressure early in life increases the risk of dying from heart disease, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal. Researchers assessed the age of onset hypertension across two generations and noted heart disease morality for Framingham

While I understand your concern about getting yourself an earlier repeat colonoscopy, your risk is very small, and if you trust the doctor who did the colonoscopy, you should get your repeat in 10 years. READERS: Some 140,000 people are diagnosed with colon cancer in the U.S each year. The booklet on colon cancer provides useful information on its causes, symptoms and treatments. To order a copy, write: Dr. Roach — No. 505W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother, 88 years old, recently switched her medicine for hypertension from timed release, which she has been taking for 10 years, to one that is not timed release, because the timed release was too expensive. I'm worried. Has she compromised her health by

doing this? Her cardiologist gave her the go-ahead. — J.R. ANSWER: In my opinion, timed-release versions for high blood pressure are preferable to non-timed-release because the level of the medication in the blood can go up and down to a greater degree with the regular-release formulation. However, it does depend on the medication, and her cardiologist knows more than I do about her particular situation. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Heart Study participants. Those whose parents had early-onset hypertension increased their risk of developing hypertension themselves later in life, compared with those whose parents had late-onset hypertension. Those who developed high blood pressure before the age of 45 increased their risk of death from heart disease more than those who developed hypertension after the age of 65. The authors suggest clinicians consider age, especially familial history of early-onset hypertension, when assessing hypertension risk. Visit PCRM.org/Hypertension to learn more about how a plant-based diet can help control blood pressure.

Substituting Beans for Beef Beneficial for Environment Swapping beef for beans would help the United States reach targeted greenhouse gas emission reductions, according to a report published in Climatic Change. Researchers compared simulated net emissions of legume production, subtracted those from average beef production rates, and used U.S. reduction goals for 2020 as a reference. Based on the results, legume substitution could account for 46 to 74 percent of the required reductions. Forty-two percent less cropland would be needed as well. International surveys and increased availability of plant-based options demonstrate a willingness to make dietary changes for environmental benefits.

cringe in embarrassment for a change. Said the Seahawks: "Tez was an NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Seahawks ambassador, but more than his on-field accomplishments, he was a loyal son, father, teammate and friend to many, possessing a larger-than-life personality and an infectious laugh. ... We are proud to have been represented by such a special person."

A BIG DOG ON AND OFF THE FIELD I was once told that the day you stop trying to leave a legacy is the day your legacy begins. It has to do with humility and letting your actions speak louder than words. It's unlikely that there ever will be a Mt. Rushmore for defensive tackles. Nor is there a good chance that people someday will think about the guy who forced six fumbles over the course of a decade-long football career. They will, however, remember a guy named Cortez Kennedy when they think about what a football player is supposed to be on and off the field. "Tez" was the kind of player you couldn't ignore. A Hall of Famer who spent all 11 years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks during their raucous 90s ... a graduate of "The U." A guy universally revered by those who played with him and those who coached him. It was sad to learn of his death at age 48. At the time of this writing, there was no official cause. The morning of his death, it was kind of striking and weird to actually read official Twitter accounts that didn't make you

Said New Orleans Saints general manager Manny Loomis: "Many who will read about him in the coming days will read of his success on the field as a great Seattle Seahawk and Miami Hurricane; however, the full story lies in his loving, fun, positive and giving heart. In my many years working in the NFL, no one better exemplified what it meant to be a great player on the field, and yet that paled in comparison to what Cortez meant to the people who knew him off the field. People of all races, religions and nationalities counted him as a friend — athletes and non-athletes alike. We should all aspire to have as big a heart as his!" Perhaps the greatest thing I ever read about the guy — and we'll surely hear more about his charitable efforts in coming days — came from his first NFL coach, Chuck Knox. He was the guy that gave him number 96 and told him to play defensive tackle ... if that was OK with him. Kennedy's response: "Put me wherever you want and let the big dog hunt."

A: Faster than you can say "Puff, the Magic Dragon," I found your LP listed in the Goldmine Standard Catalogue of American Records 1950-1975 by Tim Neely, published by Krause and available online. Neely claims the LP is worth $20 if it is the mono issue, and $25 if stereo. It is fairly common and frequently pops up at garage sales throughout the country. *** Q: I have a lamp that first appeared to be glass-leaded. On closer examination, I decided the pieces of the shade might be plastic. I am enclosing a picture for your opinion. — Brenda, Marion, Indiana Q: When my great-grandmother and her sister went to the St. Louis Fair in 1904, she took along a Brownie Camera Model A made by Kodak. It was a simple box camera, but took remarkable pictures. Does it have any value? — Rob, Chesterfield, Missouri A: Your camera is a folding type in a black leatherette case with maroon bellows. It generally sells for about $85 and is referenced in the "Cameras and Photographica Price Guide," edited by Kyle Husfloen. *** Q: I have a jar that is marked "Humphrey Glass Works," but I can't find anything about the company in my reference books. The jar has been in my family since the early 1900s. Can you tell me anything about the company? — Dawn, Austin, Texas A: Humphrey Glass Works was established in about 1890 by John M.M. Humphrey in Trenton, Nova Scotia. According to "Glass A to Z" by David J. Shotwell, the company made bottles, jars and even chimneys and globes for lanterns. In 1900, the glassworks was destroyed by fire, but within a year it was rebuilt near the original site and began expanding operations to include soda-water bottles, medicine bottles and flasks. In 1915, the plant relocated to Moncton, New Brunswick, and ceased production in about 1920. *** Q: I have the first LP recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary, the folksingers. It was issued in 1962, according to the information on the cover. What is it worth? — Rita, Wisconsin

A: Your shade is made of capiz shell, a close cousin of the oyster. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. *** Q: I am not really a collector, but I have two McCoy cookie jars that I'm curious about. Both originally belonged to my mom and are probably from the 1950s. One is a Jack-o'-Lantern jar that was rarely, if ever, used. The second is a "Mr. and Mrs. Owl" and shows some wear. I remember the second jar always being full of vanilla wafers. -- Cora Ann, Tulsa, Oklahoma A: It isn't much of a surprise that cookie jars are among the most popular collectibles produced by McCoy. It also is not a big shock that McCoy cookie jars also are plagued by fakes. Knowing the original measurements is helpful when trying to determine if a jar is the real McCoy or not. Your Jack-o'-Lantern jar was produced in about 1958, and according to "Warman's McCoy Pottery," by Mark F. Moran and published by Krause Books, it is valued in the $550 to $650 range. Since you indicated your jar is pristine, it would probably be worth on the high end. The same guide lists your owl jar at about $110. The Moran guide is excellent, and essential for anyone who collects McCoy items.

*** Q: My mom visited New Orleans during the 1950s and while there she purchased a copy of "The Picayune Creole Cook Book." Is it worth keeping? -- Tom, Pittsburgh A: Your cookbook was published in 1954 by the Times-Picayune newspaper. Since it was purchased during the 1950s, I assume it probably was the 12th edition. The first edition was published in either 1900 or 1901 and became an instant classic. The collection featured Creole recipes and generally sells in the $25 to $50 range, depending on edition and condition. *** Q: When I was a kid during the 1950s, I was given a small tin litho Shell service station and bank as a premium. I have kept it ever since, but have always been curious as to how much it is now worth. -- Ken, Abilene, Texas A: Your Shell service station and bank is worth $140 for the pair, according to Mark F. Moran, author of Warman's Gas Station Collectibles Identification and Price Guide (Krause Publications, $24.99). (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

he's so young that he just needs a lot of TLC, particularly since he's still being hand-fed. Chances are, your friend's parents have a lot more information on taking care of Star. You could learn quite a bit about caring for very young puppies and their special needs.

NEIGHBORS BATTLE OVER DOG'S BACKYARD HABITS LONELY PUPPY DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My friend's parents got him a new puppy just last week. "Star" came from the shelter and is really tiny -- he still has to be fed milk! When Star is in his puppy bed by himself he starts crying. He stops when we go in and spend time with him. How can my friend and his family get Star to feel less lonely? -- Craig, via email DEAR CRAIG: Star sounds like a really young puppy who has been separated from his mother a little bit early for some reason. I'm sure that the shelter had a reason for doing so, and that your friend's family is responsible for keeping him healthy and growing. Really young puppies can suffer a lot of anxiety when they're separated too soon from their mother and litter mates. That's one reason why puppies generally aren't adopted out until they are more than six weeks old and fully weaned, meaning they can eat solid foods. Star probably will need more attention than older puppies, including a stuffed toy in his bed to snuggle up to when humans aren't around. As Star gets older, his new family will have to help him get past his separation anxiety, which can be pretty intense in shelter pets. Crate training, basic obedience training and a structured home routine all will help Star grow into a happy, more confident dog. But for now,

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I've been letting my dog out in the backyard for years to do his business. Lately, my new next-door neighbor has been complaining to me about the smell coming from my backyard. I haven't noticed anything; I think he just doesn't like my dog. Now he's threatening to call the city. What can I do to stop this harassment? — Annoyed in Altoona, Pennsylvania DEAR ANNOYED: I'm not in a position to judge this situation. However, I can tell you that in warm weather, the smell of fresh dog poop carries quite a long way. If your neighbor is trying to enjoy a nice spring morning in his backyard at the same time your dog does his business, the two are bound to cross aromatic paths. Try to listen to your neighbor and get more details on when he notices the smell. Is the odor constant, or just for a few minutes? Would it be possible to compromise by letting your dog out an hour earlier in the morning or later at night? On another note, are you picking up after your dog? If not, waste can quickly litter your backyard to the point that you can't enjoy it either, for fear of stepping in poo. It's also a terrible fertilizer: Dog poop and urine have high levels of nitrogen, which yellows and eventually kills grass. If your back yard has clumpy tufts of grass or no grass at all, your dog's poop may be the reason. As far as calling the city, whether it takes action depends on whether you're violating any ordinances. Again, I can't make that call. But, try to compromise and keep

STRAWBERRY DAYS Eating fresh, locally grown strawberries is one of this season's happiest pleasures. Although available in the supermarket year-round, nothing compares with the taste and beauty of overflowing baskets of bright strawberries at roadside stands and farmer's markets. Our family enjoys the "pick 'em yourself" variety at nearby farms, giving us an excuse for an outing in the country and some special memory-making when kids tag along.

PerFit, Personal Fitness Center 619 N 21st Ave. Hollywood, Fl. 33020

Here are some tips and ideas for picking (maybe you have the good fortune of picking them in your own garden!) and eating this can't miss "first of the summer" treat.

Before you go picking: —Check online or with friends to get recommendations for a family-friendly strawberry-picking farm. Check to verify directions and hours. We like to go early morning or evening to avoid hot afternoon sun. —Wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. They'll get dusty! Take along sunglasses, sunscreen, hats and snacks or a picnic lunch. We also bring containers; young children especially like to carry their own small pail with a handle.

When you return: —Hulling strawberries is easy if you push a plastic straw through the pointed end of a strawberry all the way to the opposite end. The stem will pop out, and you won't waste fruit in the process. —Save any extra hulled berries in the freezer. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet. Freeze, then transfer berries to a storage bag or container. Anytime is a sweet time to eat strawberries! *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE Makes 4 servings Fresh strawberries are a sign of summer. For fun, cut the shortcakes into different shapes using cookie cutters. 2 1/2 cups sliced fresh strawberries 4 teaspoons sugar 1 cup whole-wheat flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 tablespoons organic canola or safflower oil 1 tablespoon frozen apple juice concentrate, thawed (undiluted) 1/3 cup fortified plain or vanilla soy- or rice milk, as needed 1/2 cup Tofu Whipped Topping or other non-dairy whipped topping Combine strawberries and sugar and toss gently. Let stand 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 450°F. To make the shortcakes, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl and stir with a dry wire whisk. Combine oil and juice concentrate in a small measuring cup and beat with a fork until well blended. Pour into flour mixture, and cut in with a pastry blender or fork until the mixture resembles fine crumbs.

Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead lightly 20 to 25 times, about 30 seconds, then gently smooth into a ball. Roll or pat dough into a 1/2-inchthick circle and cut with a floured 3-inch biscuit cutter into 4 rounds. Place shortcakes on a dry baking sheet as soon as they are cut, spacing them about 1-inch apart. Bake on center rack of oven until golden brown, about 10 to 12 minutes. Immediately transfer to a cooling rack. Carefully split shortcakes crosswise while they are warm, and spread with a small amount of the whipped topping. Place bottom halves of shortcakes on four dessert plates, and spoon half of the strawberries over them. Cover with the top halves of the shortcakes. Spoon on remaining strawberries, and top with the remaining whipped topping.

Tip: TTT; If desired, any other fresh, seasonal berries of your choice may be substituted for the strawberries.

Using a fork, stir in just enough non-dairy milk so dough leaves the sides of the bowl and rounds up into a ball. (Too much non-dairy milk will make the dough sticky; not enough milk will make the shortcakes dry.)

WATERMELONS • Watermelon is the most popular melon in the U.S., followed by cantaloupe and honeydew. • It’s native to Africa and is depicted in hieroglyphs on the walls of ancient Egypt. • Although there are over 300 varieties, only about 50 of them are grown commercially, and only five are commonly found in supermarkets.

muscle pain if take in advance of a heavy-duty workout.

• Watermelon contains many essential vitamins as well as lycopene. Lycopene is an antioxidant that gives fruits and vegetable a pink or red color.

• To tell if a watermelon is ripe, look at the part of the melon that was against the ground when it was growing. It should be buttery yellow rather than white or green.

• Every part of the watermelon is edible, including the seeds (roasted like pumpkin seeds) and rinds (slice them for stir fry, stew them, or pickle them).

• If you thump a melon and it sounds hollow, don’t buy it. Buy the ones that have a flat, dull sound when thumped. Press your hands to the ends of the melon. If both ends are firm, that’s good, but if either hand gives a little, that’s bad.

• The first cookbook published in the U.S. in 1776 contained a recipe for watermelon rind pickles. • One unusual snack is to put watermelon rinds in the blender and add lime juice for a kicky refreshing treat. • Watermelon slices can be baked, pan fried, or grilled. When cooked, they become very firm and meaty and are called watermelon steaks. • Some people claim that the juice of a watermelon helps prevent

• The world's heaviest watermelon was grown by Chris Kent of Sevierville, Tennessee in 2013, weighing in at 350.5 lbs (159 kg). That’s about the size of an NFL lineman. • China produces more watermelons than any other country. The U.S. ranks 5th. Forty-four states grow watermelons with Florida, Texas, California, Georgia, and Arizona leading production. • Farmers in Japan grow square wa-

termelons by encasing the growing fruit in a cube-shaped box. They also grow watermelons in the shapes of hearts, pyramids, and human faces. These melons look neat but are rarely edible because they are harvested before they are fully ripe. They are purchased as novelty gifts. • Seedless watermelons are not genetically modified. Instead, they are the result of hybridization. If you take a female watermelon plant that has 44 chromosomes, and pollinate it from a male watermelon plant that has 22 chromosomes, you get a sterile seedless watermelon. It is similar to a horse mating with a donkey and producing a mule, which is sterile. The white seeds of a seedless watermelon are just empty seed coats. Today about 85% of watermelons sold are seedless. • The Bradford watermelon is the sweetest variety in the world. It started in 1783, when an American soldier was captured by the British and held on a prison ship. He was given watermelon to eat that was the sweetest he’d ever tasted. He saved every seed, and planted them when he returned to Georgia. It was commonly boiled down to form watermelon molasses or distilled into watermelon brandy. But its rind is very soft, making it difficult to ship. It nearly went extinct before a patch was found being tended in a back yard garden, and it was revived. It’s one of the most drought-resistant types of watermelon and is now being grown in Bolivia and Tanzania.

IF YOU DO NOT TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUMS, IT CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH

GUM DISEASE AND HEART DISEASE:

"We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not." Dr. OZ Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., FACS Director, Cardiovascular Institute Columbia Medical Center, NYC ABC News, Good Morning America Several studies have shown that periodontal (gum) disease has a direct association with heart disease. Scientists believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the link. Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions. Patients at risk for infective endocarditis may require antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. See your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing. Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States. It can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth and it may become more severe over time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and start moving around in your mouth. This is the most common form of periodontitis in adults but can occur at any age. It usually gets worse slowly, but there can be periods of rapid progression.

The periodontist examines the gums, checks to see if there is any gum line recession, assesses how the teeth fit together when biting, and checks the teeth to see if any are loose. The periodontist will also take a small measuring instrument called a probe and place it between the teeth and gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets; this helps the periodontist assess the health of the gums. X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below the gum line.

DIABETES AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE: Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease, which in turn can increase blood sugar and diabetic complications. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of diabetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. Research has suggested that the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease goes both ways–periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar. Severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar, contributing to increased periods of time when the body functions with a high blood sugar. This puts people with diabetes at increased risk for diabetic complications.

STROKE: Additional studies have also pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one study that looked at the causal relationship of oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to

those in the control group.

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST? A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. Periodontists often treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease or a complex medical history. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned) or root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed). They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using a range of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants. During the first visit, the periodontist usually reviews the patient’s complete medical and dental histories. It is extremely important for the periodontist to know if any medications are being taken or if the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy.
