"Call Jacob the Plumber"

• Behind the bridge of the nose and below the brain, two small pieces of tissue dangle in the nasal passage. They're packed with ten million receptor cells and covered with mucus. Nerve fibers connect them to the two olfactory bulbs below the brain. Airborne chemicals are carried up the nose, mixed with warm humid air, trapped by mucus, and sampled by these sensors. The signals are sent to the brain which identifies the odor. Nerves in the nose are the only nerves in the human body that regenerate. This may be due to the fact that they're the only nerves that are out in the open, protected only by mucus. • The average person can name more than 2,000 odors. Trained experts can recognize over 10,000. The power of the nose peaks in middle age and then fades. About half of people over 80 cannot smell, which may account for the high number of accidental gas poisonings each year among the elderly. People with Alzheimer's disease are likely to have smelling deficits. One out of every 15 victims of head injury wakes up in a permanently odorless world. Accidents are the leading cause of the inability to smell, an affliction suffered by 2 million Americans.

NOSES (continued):

• Suppressing a sneeze has been known to damage ribs, facial bones, cartilage, and ears. Anything so powerful it can propel droplets 6 feet at 100 mph should not be stopped.

NO NOSE BLOWING • According to legend, Frederick the Great of Prussia was inspecting his soldiers when he noticed their sleeves were dirtier than the rest of their uniforms. When he asked why, he was told that the men used their sleeves to wipe the sweat from their brow and to blow their noses on. To stop this, he ordered that buttons be sewn on the sleeves, giving the men a nasty scratch whenever they used their sleeves as hankies. Today men’s suits are still adorned with useless buttons.

UNUSUAL NOSES • Junius Brutus Booth, father of John Wilkes Booth, was a famous stage actor. His handsome appearance was marred by a broken nose. Once a female fan gushed, "You're such a wonderful actor, but I just can't get over your nose!" He replied, "Well, no wonder! The bridge is gone!" • When Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe lost the tip of his nose in a duel, he had it replaced with a silver one. • Sir William Davenant, a British writer, lost his nose due to illness and his appearance was very disconcerting. An old woman once blessed his eyesight. When he enquired why, she replied that if his eyesight ever failed, he would have no place to prop a pair of spectacles.

ODORIFIC • Smelling certain fragrances or thinking about certain foods can have a relaxing effect on people. Researchers at Yale measured the brainwaves of students as they sniffed three odors: spiced apple, eucalyptus, and lavender. While sniffing spiced apples, the students’ alpha brain waves increased and their theta brain waves decreased. This is a pattern that scientists relate to a mental state of being awake, yet

(954) 779-3000 www.ThePremierSmile.com very relaxed. The other two odors had similar effects. • The same result was found when the students were asked to imagine their favorite meal or dessert. One researcher said, "When we savor a pleasant fragrance, we take deeper and slower breaths, relaxing our respiratory pattern much as we do in meditation. The odor might also serve as a distraction, focusing our attention. . . or inducing positive memories and emotions." • Research indicates that the smell of lavender reduces headaches; eucalyptus keeps people awake; mint acts as a stimulant; peach eases pain; and spiced apple reduces stress.

“SCENTSITIVE” FACTS • Research suggests that the reason some people are attracted to such things as garlic or cigarettes is because it reminds them of certain spicy chemical compounds that were present in the amniotic fluid in the womb. • Babies are attracted to their mother's scent and repulsed by a stranger's. And mothers are able to tell their children by odor alone. In one experiment, mothers were blindfolded six hours after giving birth and asked to distinguish their baby from two others using scent alone. They succeeded 61% of the time. • After World War II, chlorine-based cleaning products were phased out of Germany because bombedout areas were cleaned up with chlorine and the smell brought back memories of the war.

PERFUME FACTS • Perfume comes from the Latin "per fumare" meaning "through smoke" meaning incense. • The chemical base for most perfumes (and all musk) is the secretions of the glands of various mammals: deer, beaver, whale, civet. • Some perfumes have as many as 7,000 ingredients.

LIMERICK The bottle of perfume that Willie sent / Was highly displeasing to Millicent / Her thanks were so cold / That they quarreled, I'm told, / Of that silly scent Willie sent Millicent.

SCRATCH & SNIFF • The folks at Baltimore's public utility company were only trying to do their job, but it backfired on them. Maryland state law requires that the company remind its gas customers every year what natural gas smells like if it were to leak into the customer's home. (Natural gas doesn't actually smell, but the chemicals that are added to it give it an unmistakable odor.) So officials decided to send out a pamphlet to all of their customers that would have a small scratch and sniff area on the back that would remind them of the odor of gas. Well, there must have been a mistake made at the factory that put the smell capsules on the pamphlets because the odor was so strong that it permeated the envelopes. Folks didn't even have to open their mail to smell the gas, so on the first day after the pamphlet was sent, the company received more than 100 calls about non-existent gas leaks.

* It was contemporary American poet and essayist Rita Dove who made the following sage observation: "If only the sun-drenched celebrities are being noticed and worshiped, then our children are going to have a tough time seeing the value in the shadows, where the thinkers, probers and scientists are keeping society together." * A Turkish man once won a bet by eating an entire barbecued lamb. He won 6 British pounds — about $7 — but he never had a chance to spend it. Ten minutes after finishing the meal, he dropped dead. * Those who study such things say that, pound for pound, the human body produces more heat than the sun. * There was a time when the only people in the world who knew how to make mirrors were Venetian glassblowers. Their skill was so valuable that those with the knowledge lived as virtual prisoners (albeit privileged ones). And anyone caught spying on their methods was put to death. * Just three months after his wedding, a New Zealand man named Aleki Taumoepeau lost his wedding ring when it slipped off his finger into the ocean. Unprepared for diving at that time, he marked the rough spot on a chart and vowed he would come back and find it — despite unpredictable currents and the fact that there are no landmarks on the ocean. It was a year before he could arrange to go back to the spot with the proper gear, but after just an hour of diving, he saw something bright shining from the bottom and found the ring. * The term "IOU" originally came about as an abbreviation for "I owe unto." *** Thought for the Day: "The great thing about getting older is that you don't lose all the other ages you've been." — Madeleine L'Engle (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD — Tyler Henry, the E! channel's "Hollywood Medium," was at a press junket with Tanya Callau, widow of "Growing Pains" star Alan Thicke (whom Henry had taped a reading with for his May 31 show). The ďŹ rst question asked of Callau concerned the lawsuit ďŹ led by Thicke's two sons, Brennan and Robin Thicke, contesting Alan's will. This was news to her! She excused herself, made some calls and quickly returned to the press session. Apparently, Thicke left his children shares in his ranch, 75 percent of his personal effects and 60 percent of his remaining estate. He left Tanya the ranch furnishings, 25 percent of his personal effects, a $500,000 life-insurance policy, all his death pensions and 40 percent of his remaining estate. She and Thicke had a prenup, which she feels is invalid now, but his kids think it should stand. *** Many of your favorite shows will not return next season. CBS has canceled "Two Broke Girls" (after six seasons), "The Odd Couple," "Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders," "The Great Indoors," "Doubt" and "Pure Genius." NBC has axed "Emerald City" (dark and confusing) and "The Blacklist Redemption" (which couldn't work without James Spader). ABC has canceled "Last Man Standing" (after six seasons), "American Crime," "Dr. Ken," "The Real O'Neals," "The Catch" and "Imaginary Mary" (loved Rachel Dratch but found her voice an intrusion). Next season, CBS will have the "Big Bang Theory" spinoff, "Sheldon," narrated by Jim Parsons as Sheldon, with Iain Armitage (of "Big Little Lies") playing Sheldon at age

9; "Criminal Minds"; Shemar Moore in "Seal Team"; and Jeremy Piven top-lining "Wisdom of the Crowd." NBC has "Good Girls," with Retta and Matthew Lillard; "The Brave," with Anne Heche (about undercover military heroes); "Reverie," with Dennis Haybert; "Rise" with Josh Radnor and Rosie Perez; the eight episode mini-series "Law & Order: True Crime, The Menendez Murders"; the 10 episode reboot of "Will & Grace"; and the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger's "Celebrity Apprentice" in January. ABC has "The Good Doctor," with "Bates Motel's" Freddie Highmore (exec produced by "Hawaii 5-0" star Daniel Kim); "The Mayor" with Lea Michele ("Glee") and Yvette Nicole Brown (late of "The Odd Couple"); "Ten Days in the Valley," with "The Closer" star Kyra Sedgwick; "Gospel of Kevin," with Jason Ritter and Cristela Alonzo; "Marvel's Inhumans"; and an untitled Zach Braff comedy. FOX has "The Gifted" (an "X-Men" series), with "True Blood's" Stephen Moyer; the sci-ďŹ "The Orville," created, produced, written and starring Seth MacFarlane; and "Ghosted," with Craig Robinson and Adam Scott. Q: Will "Pure Genius" return for another season? I really liked the message of hope it gave me that one day medical science will advance to that degree. — Sharon N., via email Q: Are they going to bring back the Thursday-night show on CBS at 10 p.m. called "Pure Genius"? It was a very good and interesting show, but it wasn't on for very long. — Pauline D., via email A: The medical drama starring Augustus Prew and Dermot Mulroney was given a 13-episode order for the 201617 season. The series focused on a billionaire (Prew) who dreams of building a hospital with ultimate cutting-edge technology to treat rare and incurable diseases. He partners with maverick surgeon Dr. Walter Wallace (Mulroney), who leads the effort in clearing out the bureaucracy of medicine to focus on forward thinking, advancing technology and saving lives — at no cost to the patient. While this sounds like a wonderful premise for a medical series — and for exploring in real life — after airing all 13 commissioned episodes, CBS decided not to renew the order in the wake of mixed reviews and low ratings. *** Q: Can you tell me what Daniel Radcliffe is up to lately? — Gal P., Columbus, Ohio A: Daniel is making a foray into the world of comedy, starring with Owen Wilson in the Lorne Michaels-produced TBS comedy "Miracle Workers," a workplace comedy set in heaven. While we're on the subject, let me tell you about other new shows for this upcoming television season on TBS. "Close Enough" is a brand-new animated series from

Daveed Diggs ELLEN VON UNWERTH

"Regular Show" creator J.G. Quintel; there will be an update of the classic game show "The Joker's Wild," hosted by Snoop Dogg; and we'll get a new, as-yet-untitled series from the comedy trio The Dress Up Gang. TBS also has added Cedric the Entertainer, Taylor Mosby and Dante Hoagland to the cast of its new Tracy Morgan-starring comedy "The Last O.G." *** READERS: TNT recently announced its slate of new programming, and I wanted to share with you all. First up are two new nonďŹ ction series: "Michael Moore Live from the Apocalypse" from Oscar- and Emmy-winner Michael Moore, and "Who Run the World?" from Sarah Jessica Parker, Morgan Spurlock and ReďŹ nery29. TNT also is working with master storyteller and ďŹ lmmaker Ridley Scott to develop a night of original science-ďŹ ction programming. Initial plans call for the block to serve as a showcase for hour-long series, short-form programs and other formats to be developed in collaboration with Ridley. The network ordered a pilot for "Highland," a scripted drama written by Liz Sarnoff and starring actress-comedian Margaret Cho; TNT also announced that Daveed Diggs — who earned a Tony for the Broadway hit "Hamilton" — will star in the drama pilot "Snowpiercer," directed by "Doctor Strange" helmer Scott Derrickson. Even if you don't think you can paint or draw, taking a class will give you a start. (Remember that Georgia O'Keeffe painted into her 90s.) Writing a daily or weekly blog post on an online forum of your own can give you a voice to express your opinions. Stories, poetry or even a novel are at your fingertips. Take a computer class that will teach you how to create and save files, if that's where you need to begin.

YES, YOU NEED A HOBBY Hobbies can help keep us physically and mentally fit, and there are plenty of them to choose from. If you've recently retired, you might not even know where to begin. Here are some ideas to get you started. For the physically active, explore outdoor photography, yoga, woodworking, metal detecting, ballroom dance, golf or indoor swimming at the Y. While you're there, check out the Y's offering of fitness classes for seniors. For those who'd rather sit at a table or computer, those boxes of memorabilia will give you plenty of items to begin your own scrapbook. (Add stories and poetry, or photos to pass down to the next family generations.) Try online chess or other games for brain stretching. Start a collection, or expand one you dabbled at before, such as coins or stamps. Consider ham radio, and talk to the world.

Still don't know where to start? Make a list of things that interest you and expand from there. If you're good at sewing or painting, see if your skills are needed by the local theater group. If a line-dance class sounds good, try that. If you've going to travel, take a foreign-language class. Bonus: You don't have to limit yourself to one hobby. For the most fun, combine active and sitting activities.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL? PASSPORT IS STEP ONE Are you traveling internationally this summer? Have you sent for your passport? That's one step that you can't leave until the last minute. The website for U.S. Passports & International Travel [travel.state.gov] indicates that it can take 6-8 weeks to get your passport after it receives your application. Expedited service (2-3 weeks) is available at many post offices, but it costs an extra $60. If you already have a

After

passport, check its expiration date and be sure it has at least a few blank pages. If you need one even faster, you'll need to visit a passport office. Keep the travel.state.gov link handy because it has a status-check feature and phone numbers to call for information or for applying. Click on Before You Go for tips on staying safe while abroad. See the Alerts and Warnings sections for information about locations with violence, attacks and even health alerts. If you need help while you're away, click on Emergency Assistance to find the embassy or consulate closest to you. Consider enrolling (it's free) in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (step.state.gov/step). Run by the U.S. Department of State, you'll have access to help should you run into trouble overseas. Tell your doctor in advance if you'll need an extra prescription while you're away. Then keep the medication with you, not packed into checked luggage and not left in hotel rooms. Do not announce online that you're leaving! But give friends or family at home a copy of your itinerary. Test-pack your luggage to make sure everything is going to fit and not go over the weight limit. Don't take things you can get at your destination, like soaps and shampoo. For more information on having a calm, peaceful, safe trip, check www.independenttraveler.com for tips.

NECK DEFORMATION APPEARED SUDDENLY DEAR DR. ROACH: One day, I woke up and my neck was bent forward. Now my chin almost touches my chest. How much worse can this get? One doctor said he may have to break my neck and reset it. I can't look people in the face anymore; I'm looking at their belt buckle. — R.W. ANSWER: I can think of several reasons why your neck may be bent forward. One is a muscle problem. A severe muscle spasm in the neck can force the neck into an unnatural position, often very painful to move. This can go on for weeks. However, most people can force their neck into a normal position. The second is a nerve problem. Cervical dystonia is the most important of these. Dystonia can present itself with the neck pointing to the side, forward or backward. It typically gets better and then worse, and is associated with sustained muscle contractions. What the doctor said about "breaking your neck" doesn't make sense to me. However, since your doctor has suggested a possible spine surgery, the third, and most likely cause, is a skeletal problem. Kyphosis is the term for an abnormal forward deformity of the spine (as opposed to scoliosis, which is to the side). There are numerous causes, but in older men, the most likely is osteoporosis, which can cause very severe kyphosis, especially when in conjunction with vertebral fractures. I wonder if you had a vertebral compression fracture that made things suddenly worse. Unfortunately, surgery for kyphosis has a very high complication rate and shouldn't be considered unless you are facing serious impediments, such as difficulty breathing or intractable pain. The best treatment is an

BREAKING MEDICAL NEWS High-Fiber Diet Lowers Risk for Arthritis A fiber-rich diet lowers the risk for knee osteoarthritis, according to findings published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases. Researchers reviewed and compared x-ray evidence and arthritic symptom reports with fiber intake and lifestyle data from Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) and the Framingham Offspring cohort study. Those who consumed the highest amounts of fiber from the OAI and Framingham studies had a 30 percent and 61 percent lower risk for knee arthritis, respectively, compared with those who consumed the least. Researchers contribute the reduced risk to fiber’s role in lowering both BMI and inflammatory compounds in the blood.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 75-year-old male on Coumadin who recently took a fall. I badly bruised my shin. Initially, it swelled up the size of half a grapefruit but now, two weeks later, it's still very tender and the size of half an orange. I first iced and elevated it. Lately I have tried heat, an elastic wrap and even my TENS unit, but nothing seems to reduce the swelling and sensitivity. Any suggestions? — B.N.

ANSWER: A bone bruise, called a periosteal hematoma, happens when small blood vessels are broken in the lining of the bone, called the periosteum. The blood collects and forms a tender lump at the site of injury. It can happen at any bone, but the shin is very common due to its being very superficial. Warfarin (Coumadin) works by preventing the liver

the impact on death from chronic disease. More than 600 million adults and 107 million children are classified as obese; the rate of increase for obesity among children has been even greater than the rate seen in adults. Cardiovascular disease caused 70 percent of deaths in those with excess body weight, 40 percent of which occurred in individuals who had high BMIs but were not obese. The authors call for multiple interventions designed to curb increasing BMI rates, including promotion of healthful foods in place of unhealthful foods to children.

Vegan Diets Benefit Heart Health A vegan diet demonstrates the ability to prevent and treat heart failure, according to a case study and short literature review in the Journal of Geriatric Cardiology. In a new special issue of the journal entitled “A PlantBased Diet and Cardiovascular Disease,” researchers describe a case study where a 79-year-old man with heart disease refused the commonly recommended bypass and valve replacement surgery and opted to adopt a whole-foods, plant-based diet instead. After two months, his heart failure symptoms had improved; his weight fell into a healthy range; his total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides fell from 201 to 137 mg/dL, 105 to 67 mg/dL, and 112 to 96 mg/dL, respectively. The authors further explore the body of evidence showing such diets are beneficial for heart disease patients.

The record shows that Court won 24 grand slam singles titles. (A "grand slam" means you won the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in a single calendar year.) This is kind of a big deal. Players like Evert and Navratilova won 18. Steffi Graf had 22; Serena Williams has 23 of them. The International Tennis Hall of Fame plaque for Court says that "for sheer strength of performance and accomplishment there has never been a tennis player to match her." The Melbourne Herald Sun called her the greatest female tennis player of all time.

COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION I was born on May 13, and sometimes I remember to actually look at the part of the newspaper that tells you who was born or what significant event occurred on that same day. Turns out, it was a pretty significant day. Formula One started on that day in 1950. Stevie Wonder, the world's blindest basketball-game-attending fan, was born on that day. Other things occurred: In 1917, three kids said they received a visit from the apparition of Jesus' mom at Fatima, Portugal. In 1940, it was the day Germany conquered France (I know, I know ... that could have happened any day, but it just so happened). Also, it was the day that Bobby Riggs — a washed-up, 55-year-old tennis-playing hustler — destroyed Margaret Court in straight sets (emphasis soon will become clear), 6-2, 6-1. At the time, this was a big deal. Court was the No. 1-ranked woman's player in the world. Her loss did absolutely nothing to advance women's rights. This was a time when women athletes barely had running water in their locker rooms, let alone anything approaching equal tournament pay. The fact that Court curtseyed to Riggs before the match made the loss even more cringe-worthy to women players like Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert.

And then last week, we learned that Margaret Court, who played in the 1960s and 70s, makes no sense in today's world. Look around your town. Chances are, many of you haven't a clue as to why your town has its name, particularly if it ends in "ville" or "burg." Bet many of you live on a street or drive named after a person you haven't the slightest inkling about. But that's really how the majority of people in the world will leave a legacy, they will get something or someplace named after them after a vote by the local city council. Very few people leave lasting impressions on the world without getting either assassinated or blown up to epic proportions (I'm looking at you, Johnny Appleseed). Think of Carnegie Hall. Or Cermak Boulevard. Wrigley Field. The problem tennis has is that the Australian Open named an arena after Court, and Court has turned out to be a pretty terrible person. I won't dignify Court by repeating what she said about the lesbian community, but I'll make a psychic prediction: There'll be an arena looking for a new name in Australia in the next few days. Sorry, Margaret ... we're going forward, not backward. You are NOT the greatest female tennis player of all time. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.

knife, $280; sugar tongs, $190; and salad fork, $120. *** Q: I purchased a Quezal vase at a yard sale for 25 cents. It looks like a Tiffany, and I have several friends who wish to buy it. -- Pat, Riverside, Rhode Island

FOUNTAIN PEN Q: My dad was a banker in Kansas, and I never saw him use a writing instrument that wasn't a fountain pen. I inherited one of his favorite ones, a Parker Duofold Senior. It is a beautiful pen, and I would like to know about when it was made. -- Stan, Overland Park, Kansas A: Your pen was manufactured in 1958 and is quite collectible. I found it listed in "Collecting Pens," by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles. Kiersh values your pen at $175, but this may be a little low since fountain pens have become a hot collectible and values have steadily risen. I occasionally write with a "Big Red" from the 1930s, and it is one of the pleasures of life to write a note or letter with a vintage pen. *** Q: My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Europe in about 1920. Among the heirlooms they managed to bring with them is a set of sterling flatware in the Acanthus pattern by Georg Jensen. What can you tell me about it? -- Martha, Waco, Texas A: Georg Jensen opened his silver business in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1904, and his craftsmanship made him famous throughout Europe. His mark is distinctive: a wreath topped by a crown and the words "Georg Jensen, Inc." Georg Jensen Inc., USA, opened in New York in 1941, but closed within a decade. Your pattern was introduced in 1917. Typical pieces of this pattern are three piece carving set, $800; dinner

A: Quezal glass was made from 1901 until about 1924 in the Queens, N.Y., studio of Martin Bach Sr. Other companies made similar art glass, including Loetz, Steuben and Tiffany. Since Quezal vases generally sell for well above $1,000, my advice is to contact a reputable dealer or appraiser in your area and find out if your piece is authentic. If it is, you have a good eye and made a wonderful buy. Q: I have acquired a collection of about 35 video discs, including features that were issued by both RCA and 20th Century Fox. How much do you think they are worth, and where can I sell them? — E.L., New Hampshire A: Capacitance Electronic Discs or CEDS were popular during the 1980s and were first marketed by RCA. CEDs were grooved vinyl discs that allowed consumers to watch feature films in their homes. The quality was fairly good, but the system soon was overshadowed by tape formats. Video discs quickly became yet another dinosaur of our technical age.

hand-colored fashion plates were an attempt to bring the latest Paris clothing lines to American women and are especially collectible. I found a bound copy of Peterson's Magazine from 1870 available online for $60. According the price guide in "Vintage Magazines," by Richard Russell and Elaine Gross Russell and published by Krause Books, an 1871 volume is valued at $65. *** Q: I have several albums of bicentennial stamps issued by The Franklin Philatelic Society. How much are they worth? — Ruth, New Mexico A: Most Franklin issues are difficult to sell in the secondary marketplace because its "instant collectibles" were churned out by the millions. I checked several online auction companies and there doesn't seem to be much interest or demand. Write to Larry Cox in care of KFWS, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or send e-mail to questionsforcox@ aol.com. Due to the large volume of mail he receives, Mr. Cox cannot personally answer all reader questions, nor does he do appraisals. Do not send any materials requiring return mail. A quick check revealed that video discs are of little interest to collectors, probably due to the fact that special equipment is required to view them. I found several thousand discs available on eBay, most selling in the $4 to $10 range. Fairly typical were 10 features, including "M*A*S*H" and "Fiddler on the Roof," all for $10. An exception was the "Star Wars" trilogy, offered for $42. *** Q: I have a bound copy of Peterson's Magazine from 1870. How much do you think it is worth? — Caroline, Los Lunas, New Mexico A: Charles Peterson began his magazine in Philadelphia in 1842 and it continued until 1898. The publication began as "Ladies National Magazine," later as "Lady's World" and eventually as simply "Peterson's." It was a fashion magazine that also included recipes, lace patterns, parlor games, household hints and even house plans. The

to take care of a cat. And instead of taking Fig to the vet to treat his eye problem with a stronger medication, she waited four months and then dumped him back on you. I'm pretty upset at this, and I know you are, too, because the victim here is Fig. He lost one home already, and now he's losing a second home, and he's sick. He may wind up in a shelter. I'm not sure how this might play out legally, but we're dealing with a living being here, and Fig's welfare is at stake. So, take the high road and be Fig's hero.

TAKE THE HIGH ROAD TO PROTECT CAT

$25 for GAS! With any $200 gold purchase

If there is any way you can take him in for a few weeks while you rehome him, please try. Or, ask the new owner for time while you find someone else to care for him. Also, find out if the new owner has taken Fig to the vet. If not, and if you have the resources, offer to pay for the visit and medicine.

ELDERLY CAT'S ISSUES DON'T SIGNAL THE END

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Before moving out about five months ago we found a good home for our cat, "Figaro." I supplied everything the new owner would need, like his litter box and litter, food, etc. A week later, the new owner called and said Fig's eye was weeping. He did suffer from that a year ago, so I bought the same over-the-counter medicine and delivered it to her. Four months later, she called again and accused me of knowing Fig had a pre-existing condition. She demanded I come retrieve him, and that I also take him to the vet. I was shocked. What should I have done? — Sorry for the Cat Problems

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I wanted to write to you about our shelter cat, "Trip." We named him after a character on "Star Trek." He's now about 16 years old, give or take a year since he was a stray found by animal control and put in the city shelter. We adopted him a day before he was to be euthanized.

DEAR SORRY: I believe the new owner just didn't want

Trip immediately adopted us as his family, and we've

never had a problem with him. That is, until a couple years ago, when he began wandering the house at night, meowing. The veterinarian found nothing physically wrong, but said that after age 10, cats can develop cognitive dysfunction — similar to elderly humans and dementia. Please tell your readers that just because a cat is on a slow decline mentally, it's not the end. Trip sleeps much longer and more deeply than he ever did as a young cat. He still sometimes wanders at night, although anti-anxiety meds have helped somewhat. But he also still knows us and is very loving. The vet said that he will gradually eat less and less, and may lose control of his bowels; at that point we may need to make a decision on whether to prolong his life or keep him from suffering. But for now, he's still our Trip. — Jayne in San Antonio DEAR JAYNE: Thank you for telling us about Trip! Many senior cats will travel this path, and it's important to give them support and love throughout their lifespan. Readers, if you have a senior cat, work with your vet to recognize the signs of cognitive dysfunction so you can help your cat ease through its senior years more comfortably. Kids can name lots of animals, but sometimes as few as ďŹ ve local plants. Often people just think of plants as green blobs in the background of nature. BUTTERFLIES, BEES AND HUMMINGBIRDS

—The next time you are at the grocery store or farmer's market together, see how many fruits and vegetables are there thanks to bees — apples, cherries, avocados, cucumbers, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, lemons, limes and even onions, carrots and celery!

"Who helps turn the strawberry blossoms into berries?" Rhonda Hayes asks 5-year-old Isla as she sees her skipping across the narrow driveways separating their urban homes. "Bees!" she answers, and I think that's a queen bee over there," she adds, pointing to hedge of wild pink roses. "She knows how it all works," says Rhonda with a smile. "Bee watching is the new bird watching!" No matter one's age, Rhonda isn't shy about sharing her knowledge about the birds and bees. And for those of us on a learning curve, her book "Pollinator Friendly Gardening" is an inspiring guide intended to assist all of us interested in doing our part to grow healthy gardens for pollinators. Let's get started! To grow your family's knowledge of pollinator gardening and to celebrate National Pollinator Week (June 19-25), here are some of Rhonda's easy and

ADD SMOKE AND SPICE TO FRUIT AND VEGGIES It's time to get outside, enjoy the sun and infuse your food with fire and smoke. It's also time to make room for more fruits and vegetables on the grill. Why not try zucchini, eggplant, asparagus or mushrooms as the "center of the plate," and create a delicious dessert using grilled fruits? Grilling provides an opportunity to prepare healthy fruits and vegetables in a different way. Many people think everything tastes better on the grill, which also can hold true for fruits and vegetables. Taste is not the only benefit of preparing plant-based meals this way. Vegetables and fruit cook so quickly on the grill that they retain much of their vitamin and nutrient content. I have a new American Muscle Grill, and it's perfect for any type of grilling, barbecuing or outdoor cooking thanks to the dual gas or propane feature. The technology behind the AMG is ultra-modern, and your vegetables, fruits and breads will be smoked, roasted or seared with its infrared feature to delicious perfection. The reversible V-Tech grates provide added control over heat-transfer and hot and cool cooking zones. Experiment with different spices, marinades and sauces when preparing fruits and vegetables on the grill. Try this flavorful recipe for Moroccan-Style Grilled Vegetables at your next family or holiday gathering. It serves four to six people.

and add the fruit and vegetables. Mix well to coat all the ingredients. Let ingredients marinade at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour before skewering. 4. Thread vegetables and pineapple onto soaked skewers. Wrap the ends of the wooden skewers with foil to prevent burning. Lightly coat both sides of the vegetables with nonstick spray. 5. Using long-handled tongs, moisten a paper towel with cooking oil spray. Lightly coat the grill rack with the oil-soaked paper towel to prevent sticking. Lay skewers on the grate with the vegetables over the hot side, and the foil-covered handles outside of the grill. 6. Grill vegetables, covered, over medium heat until vegetables are cooked and lightly charred, about 4 minutes. Turn, baste with any remaining marinade, and grill 4 to 5 minutes more or until vegetables are tender, turning frequently. Serve immediately. Serves 4 to 6 (3 to 4 skewers per person).

1. Heat grill to medium-high; spray grates with nonstick spray. If using a gas grill, turn off one side; on an American Muscle Grill, fill three trays with charcoal and the rest with wood chips. On a conventional charcoal grill, push the coals to one side and replace the grate. Soak (16 to 18) 12-inch wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes, or use metal skewers, if desired. 2. To make the marinade: Using a large bowl, mix together the parsley, oil, garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and the lemon juice. Mix well to combine. 3. Add the vegetables and fruit to the marinade in the bowl; or use a large re-sealable bag, pour in the marinade

Amazing Plants

BLUE GREEN ALGAE • Technically, blue green algae is not really an algae. It’s really a phylum of bacteria that engage in photosynthesis called cyanobacteria. The name comes from the Greek word “kyanós” (or “cyan”) meaning “blue.” • In the water, blue green algae shows up where fertilizer runoff feeds it. It requires calm water, so it’s seldom found in rivers and streams that move with a quick current. Instead, it prefers ponds and lakes. When it blooms, it gives off neurotoxins that contaminate not only the water but also the fish living there. When contaminated fish are eaten, symptoms include nausea, dizziness, and amnesia. Swimming in the water can be dangerous, and drinking the water can cause liver failure, seizures, paralysis, and death. • But blue green algae, AKA cyanobacteria, thrive even outside of the water. They form symbiotic relationships with fungi, and when bacteria and fungi team up together, the result is lichens. These lichens thrive in many places: damp soil, desert sand, Antarctic rocks, and barren boulders. • People living in close proximity to lakes infested with blue green algae can show an increased rate of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Soldiers who served around Qatar during the Gulf Wars also show an increased risk of ALS because of the prevalence of lichens in the desert crust. • However, many facets of blue green algae are essential. Because it was one of the first oxygen-producing organisms that appeared on the planet, it was responsible for transforming Earth from an anaerobic environment to an oxygen-rich one. Many oil deposits were formed from eons of blue green algae. • Some types of blue green algae, such as spirulina, are sold as health food supplements because of its nourishing properties.

• Blue green algae has the ability to fix nitrogen in the environment. All plants need nitrogen to grow, and nitrogen is plentiful in the atmosphere, but there are only a few types of plants that can take the nitrogen out of the air and transfer it to the soil where other plants can utilize it. Most notably, legumes such as soybeans perform this service, which is why soybeans (which fix nitrogen) are routinely rotated with other crops such as corn (which use nitrogen.) Cyanobacteria perform this same service, both in the water and on land. • A certain type of aquatic fern is planted in rice paddies because cyanobacteria are contained within the leaves of the fern, nourishing it with nitrogen. When the fern dies and sinks to the bottom of the rice paddy, the nitrogen is released so the next crop of rice can use it. • One company is experimenting with making ethanol from blue green algae by floating large plastic containers of it in the ocean and collecting the ethanol produced by the actions of sun, heat, and algae. • It’s possible that blue green algae could provide not only food but also oxygen in future manned missions to Mars. • One of the most famous outbreaks of blue green algae happened in 1961 in Santa Cruz, California, when residents awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of birds slamming against their windows and dying in the streets. When they rushed outside to see what was happening, poisoned and disoriented seagulls were attracted by the light of the flashlights, and flew towards the people. Interested by this unexplained phenomenon, Alfred Hitchcock produced a movie based on a Daphne du Maurier story called “The Birds.” It was decades later when scientists eventually concluded that the bizarre behavior of the birds was caused by eating anchovies that had been contaminated with blue green algae.
