Cell phones have revolutionized the way we communicate, so now it is time for Tidbits to delve into the history of this device, one that’s in the hands of 95% of Americans. • While standing on Sixth Avenue in New York City in April of 1973, Motorola employee Martin Cooper made the world’s first mobile phone call. The recipient of the call was his counterpart at AT&T, Motorola’s competitor and biggest company in the world. Cooper, who has become known as “the father of the cellphone,” was an inventor and general manager of Motorola’s Communications Systems Division. Cooper’s phone weighed 2 lbs. (0.91 kg) and required 10 hours to charge for a talk time of 30 minutes.

• It took 10 years to bring the portable cell phone to market. In 1983, Motorola introduced its 1.1-lb. (0.5 kg) DynaTAC 8000X phone for consumer use with a hefty price tag of $3,995 (about $9,300 in today’s dollars). It took seven years to reach one million cell phone subscribers.

• The first text message was transmitted in December of 1992. A 22-year-old software programmer named Neil Papworth sent the message “Merry Christmas” to his friend. Because mobile phones did not yet have keyboards, Papworth sent the message from his personal computer. It would be another year before texts could be sent phone to phone. It’s estimated that about 350 billion text messages are sent each month. • The Guinness Book of World Records cites Sonja Kristiansen of Norway as the world’s fastest texter to date. She sent a very unusual message in 37.28 seconds: “The razor-toothed piranhas of the general Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality, they seldom attack a human.”

Simon featured e-mail capabilities, a pager, calendar, address book, NotePad, a sketchpad, and a calculator, operated with a stylus or fingertip, all for a retail of $899. • There are nearly 7 billion cell phone subscriptions on the Earth today. In many countries, there are more subscriptions than people because of people having multiple phones. However, even in poor countries, the subscription rate is 89 per 100 inhabitants. • About 95% of Americans own some kind of cell phone, and 77% have smartphones. About half of American smartphone owners have had to cancel or shut off their service for a time due to the high cost of maintaining it.
• The average person unlocks his or her smartphone about 110 times each day. What do we do with our mobile phones? While you might think the most common use is calling or texting, it’s actually checking the time.

By the end of 2014, more than 590 million iPhones had been sold. The iPhone accounts for more than 60% of Apple’s total revenue, more sales than everything else Microsoft offers combined.

Most deaths are the result of falls, although many have been killed by moving vehicles while snapping photos. * It was aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart who made the following sage observation: "Never interrupt someone doing what you said couldn't be done." * You might be surprised to learn that famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wanted to marry the notorious Marie Antoinette. Of course, at the time he stated this desire, he was 6 years old and she was 7. * It's possible that you've never tried to imagine a baby bat nursing -- though, as mammals, they certainly do. Now that you are imagining it, here's a hint: The babies have to nuzzle into mom's armpit (wingpit?) to get to the milk. * The year the Second Continental Congress issued the Declaration of Independence, establishing the United States of America, the fledgling nation had a total population of 2 1/2 million -- less than one-third of 1 percent of the global population. By 1800, even though the population of the growing na-
tion had more than doubled, America still ranked 16th in the list of most-populous nations. Today, though, with a population of over 325 million, the United States has more people than any country except China and India. * Those who study such things say that as we get older, we breathe more slowly. * Sure, a group of swans can be referred to as a flock or a flight, but why not show some creativity? You can refer to a grounded group as a bank or a drift (presumably due its resemblance to a drift of snow); in the air, they can, collectively, be called a wedge. The best choice, however, might be the fanciful term "a lamentation of swans." *** Thought for the Day: "It has been said that a pretty face is a passport, but it's not. It's a visa, and it runs out fast." -- Julie Burchill (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD It seems hard to believe that three-time Oscar-nominated director/screenwriter Christopher Nolan didn't know how famous Harry Styles, formerly of the boy band One Direction, was when he cast him in his ďŹ lm "Dunkirk," which has just opened in theaters. Nolan received Oscar nominations for his scripts for "Memento" (2005) and "Inception" (2010), as well as best director for "Inception." He's also the man who guided "Batman Begins" (2005), "The Dark Knight" (2008) and "The Dark Knight Returns" (2012) to top box-ofďŹ ce success. "I don't think I was aware of how famous Harry [Styles] was," Nolan said. "I mean, my daughter had talked about him, my kids talked about him, but I wasn't really aware of it. ... I cast Harry because he ďŹ t the part wonderfully. What he does in the ďŹ lm is really remarkable." Seems strange he'd cast a singer with no acting experience to act with seasoned professionals Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy unless he knew he could bring something to the table. You'd have to have lived in a cave not to know who Harry Styles is! *** Robert Pattinson, red hot because of "The Twilight Saga" (2008-2012), had six ďŹ lms released since 2014, all of which were box-ofďŹ ce duds. He now has three more ďŹ lms due: the crime drama "Good Time," with Jennifer Jason Leigh, out Aug. 11; the Western comedy "Damsel," with Mia Wasikowska; and the sci-ďŹ adventure "High Life," with Patricia Arquette. At 31, Pattinson has to hit with these ďŹ lms if he's going to headline any others.

*** British actor Douglas Booth shaved his eyebrows and wore heavy make-up when he played Boy George in the 2010 BBC TV ďŹ lm "Worried About the Boy." An enthusiastic Boy George remarked, "He gets it, he reminds me of me when I was 17" (he wishes!). When he played Pip in a BBC ďŹ lm of "Great Expectations" (2011), critics went crazy over his looks. One female critic gushed "He gave a mesmerizing performance and was distractingly lovely; one can't expect Dickens ever intended Pip to be more beautiful than Estella!" Who gets reviews like that? Booth then starred as Romeo in "Romeo & Juliet" (2013) to Oscar-nominee Hailee Steinfeld's Juliet; and Emma Watson's husband in "Noah" (2014), causing her to observe, "He's a 90-year-old man in a young body." He also starred in "Jupiter Ascending" (2015) with Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum and Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne. His next ďŹ lm is "Mary Shelley," in which, as Percy Shelley, he inspires her to write "Frankenstein" (The Doctor or the Monster? Is that a compliment either way?) From Boy George to "distractively lovely" and inspiring Frankenstein, now that's a stretch, even for "an old man in a young body"! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
Q: I saw an article about a new show with Keanu Reeves and Peter Stormare called "Swedish Dicks," and I really need to know what that show is about. -- Paul T., via email A: "Swedish Dicks" -- which premieres Wednesday, Aug. 9, on Pop TV -- centers on Ingmar (Peter Stormare), a washed-up ex-stuntman-turned-private investigator who pairs up with a Swedish DJ named Axel (played by Johan Glans). Together they set out to solve some of LA's weirdest crimes. Keanu plays Tex, a fellow stuntman whose mysterious death has haunted Ingmar for decades. I spoke with series co-star Felisha Cooper, who plays Sarah, Ingmar's daughter, and she gave me the scoop on this quirky new comedy. Felisha revealed: "Sarah is a hot-shot lawyer, takes nothing from nobody, she's beautiful, she dresses well, she makes good money, and she's just doing her damn thing. "She has a soft spot for her dad, so he's gotten her to go on cases with him, and she gets him out of the scrapes he gets into. She does it pro bono because he's her father. She hates it, but the reason she does it is because she loves him. Even if she won't admit it, she loves him." As far as working with Keanu goes: "Keanu is such a delight. He is reserved and calm, with a very strong demeanor. He's so kind, he's so engaged, and his eye contact is so perfect, you can tell he cares about people when they speak to him. I think he's wonderful." *** Q: Can you tell me when my TGIT shows will return on ABC? I am dying to know what's going to happen! -- Sandi S., via Facebook

1. Singer-songwriter Lionel Richie once said that he didn't have time to get the lyrics translated, so he made up the sounds in the song, like "Jambo jumbo." 2. know if it's right for us. Vacation can be a perfect time to preview an area. Here's how: * Take a rental in your proposed area and see what it's like. Is there plenty of local shopping? How about libraries and museums?
WHERE TO RETIRE?
* Schedule a look-see of a few possible homes with a real estate agent and get a good look at the market. Ask lots of questions, especially about safe neighborhoods, property taxes and public transportation.
"Where should I retire?" That's a big question for many seniors. We can review "Best of" lists -- such as places with lowest state taxes, cities that are senior friendly and more -- but until we actually visit an area, we can't
* Read the local newspaper each day you're there. Call the paper and ask to speak to the local editor about economics, part-time jobs if you're going to want one, the expanding or shrinking business community, and more.
* Ask your local doctor about the medical situation in your proposed hometown. He might be able to do a quick investigation of hospitals there. If he gives it a big thumbs-up, you'll know you'll be in good hands. (Or go online to medicare.gov and look for Hospital Compare.) * Check in at the local senior center, ideally at a luncheon or event where you can talk to other seniors. Ask about life in that town, events for seniors, suggestions for neighborhoods and whether there is plenty to do that would interest you. While a vacation to hunt for a place to retire might not be the most relaxing you've ever had, it might be the best one if you gather enough information to make a decision about where you'll live next.

The good news is that Moon responded very quickly to treatment. Even though she will be taking antibiotics for a few more weeks, she is back to her old energetic self. PETS AND LYME DISEASE DEAR PAW'S CORNER: We recently had a scary incident with our beloved collie mix, "Moon." She is an energetic dog, but one day last week she started slowing down, panting more and not wanting to play as much. A couple of days later she was even limping a bit. I took her to the veterinarian that very day! The vet quickly diagnosed Moon as having Lyme disease. She loves to run around outside on our big property, and I try to check her daily for ticks, but sometimes
DEAR DOUG: I'm so glad to hear that Moon is doing OK! It is indeed very important to check pets that spend time outdoors daily for ticks. If you have multiple pets and only one goes outside, you should check all the pets. The check can be as simple as running your hand up through their fur to feel for the telltale smooth, hard bump of an attached tick. Using a flea and tick repellent also is important, but it's not 100 percent effective. So check regularly, and monitor your pet for behavior or physical changes. If you feel that something is "off," not quite right, contact the vet. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Nobody has a clue. Aside from the "10 point must system", nobody knows who the boxing judges are, nobody knows how the fight will be judged. Imagine going to any other sporting event and never knowing the score? Imagine watching four quarters of a football game, seeing seven touchdowns but when your friend asks the score you say "not a clue" every time. Or check in on the baseball game and just let random people in the stands judge whether or not runs should count that day.
When Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather square off the night of Aug. 26, it's already a foregone conclusion that they've both won. McGregor stands to make something north of $60 million and Mayweather $100 million. Mayweather, of course, has the most to lose -- his legacy -- but it'd be hard to shed too many tears for the guy if he were to lose. Perhaps the biggest winner in all of the pre-fight spectacle is Paulie Malignaggi. Malignaggi, a former two-time world champion, has always been a curiosity for fight fans. He was knocked for having no power during his career, having only scored seven knockouts; however, his speed, toughness and ability to draw attention to his fights were relatively unmatched during his reign as champion and as a competitor. His acumen inside the ring led him to effortlessly segue to the announcer's table for Showtime, but his take on boxing throughout his career has suddenly come into much sharper focus. Malignaggi, a New Yorker in every sense of the word, never backed down from a fight, and his vocal opinions about the business of boxing are even more relevant today. When you don't knock many people out, you have to rely on the scorecards in boxing. How are the scorecards determined?
People like to talk about the "death of boxing" and always compare the "sweet science" to mixed martial arts, but it doesn't have to be so. They can co-exist, and to say that McGregor isn't a fighter is absolutely absurd. But as we saw from watching Ronda Rousey try to outbox a boxer and lose badly, and knowing enough about Floyd Mayweather's world-class defense, McGregor is still a massive underdog with a puncher's chance. Even if he wins, it doesn't mean that boxing is a lesser sport, it just means that Mayweather lost a fight. We're getting closer to finding out the answers, but boxing will, no matter the outcome, still have plenty to answer for. It's time to fix the scoring system or else these pay-perview spectacles are going to be a thing of the past, and that's something we'd all regret. As McGregor said, "We're all getting fed here." At the end of the day it's a job, and boxing still has more work to do. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

BOXING MUST FIX SCORING SYSTEM
It was Malignaggi's take on Conor McGregor that got the boxing world laughing along with him. His analogy was that golfers don't suddenly become hockey players because a driver looks similar to a hockey stick. While that knock earned him an invite to spar with McGregor leading up to the fight, the analogy doesn't quite work.

Q: I hope you can help me. I read your column in the Decatur Tribune. I am 98 years old and have in my basement my grandmother's Singer sewing machine. It is a treadle machine driven by foot power. I would like to sell it and hope you can help me. -- Natica, Arcola, Illinois A: Singer treadle machines were built to last. Because of that, hundreds of thousands have survived and many are still in use in American homes. When my mother died several years ago, she had three Singers scattered around her house, two that she used fairly frequently. Most of the early Singers I have spotted in antique and secondhand shops have been priced in the $150 to $250 range. My advice is to see if there are any sewing groups in your area, because that is where you might find a buyer for the one you have. *** Q: I have a vase that is marked "Abington USA" and was given to my mother during the 1940s. Can you tell me anything about this company? -- Brenda, Vermont A: I found a reference to Abington pottery in one of my favorite reference books, U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain and Clay by Lois Lehner (Collector Books, $24.95). According to Lehner, the company opened in Abington, Illinois, in 1908. It originally manufactured plumbing fixtures, but added a line of vases, cookie jars and other decorative pieces during the 1930s. In 1950, the art-pottery kiln was destroyed by fire. Prices vary, and to determine how much your vase is worth, you need to contact a good appraiser.

Q: Although I am not a collector, I have two Pez dispensers that I am curious about. One is of Casper, the friendly ghost, which I remember from when I was in grade school during the 1950s. The second is Bambi. -- Steve, Rapid City, South Dakota
Q: I bought an old radio at a church sale and wonder how much it is worth. I paid $150 for a 1935 "tombstone" General Electric table radio in walnut finish. It has five tubes, three knobs and its original grille cloth. -- Bill, Arkansas
A: I found both of your dispensers referenced in Warman's "Pez," by Shawn Peterson. According to this reference, Casper is valued in the $150 to $175 range. A die-cut base would add about $50 to its value. Bambi is valued in the $59 to $75 range. With copyright, add $100.
A: I found your radio in three of my price guides, and all seem to agree that your radio is worth in the $90 to $110 range.

Q: I have a small pin shaped like a shovel with "Bury a Jap" embossed on it. Is it worth anything? -- Bob, Rhode Island
Q: I am in the process of clearing out my late mother's Chicago apartment. I am finding designer clothing from the 1940s and '50s, including a Christian Dior satin cocktail dress, a Givenchy hat and dozens of purses and shoes. I think these items are too good for thrift shops. How can I market them and get a fair price? -- Bob, Naperville, Illinois A: You might begin by contacting some of the upscale clothing stores in the Chicago area. Get several offers before you decide to sell. Condition is extremely important, but keep in mind serious collectors are always on the prowl for design items. Designer clothing from the 1950s, '60s and even the '70s is extremely hot. For example, a 1970s Louis Feraud jacket and dress ensemble recently sold at auction for $475. *** Q: I have a heart-shaped cedar box with a mirror inside the lid. It has an original price sticker of 59 cents on the bottom along with "Pilliod, Swanton, Ohio." The box can be locked with a small key. Any value? -- Marilyn, Oklahoma. A: You have a trinket box, probably from the 1930s. The heart design and the fact that it is crafted of cedar make it quite collectible. Boxes of this type were sold as souvenirs and often contained small pieces of jewelry and keepsakes. They were especially popular in the South throughout the 20th century. Trinket boxes generally sell in the $20 to $35 range, if in good condition.

* If you use cold water to clean all of your clothes, you can save about $40 a year in electricity costs. Your clothes will last longer, as well. And consider a clothesline for air-drying items like towels and sheets on nice days. That saves electricity too. * Be sure to get and check references for any home-service professional you hire. Get estimates in writing, and make sure the estimates list what is included -- and what is not.
* When decluttering, use this tried and true tip: Set up four boxes with labels for Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash and Recycle. It's amazing how much you can take care of quickly. * "We had a big basket for shoes by our door. It just kept getting messy as people would search for their own shoes in it. Finally, I got smart. I put a low bench by the door and stashed one small basket for each family member underneath. Your shoes go in your basket, and it's much less mess." -- A.L. in Georgia * "Tired of waiting for that frothy head on your beer or root beer to go down? Stick your finger in it and watch it disappear like magic." -- K.E. in Idaho * "My kids kept losing the plastic sticks for the ice-pop maker, and I ended up with several of the molds. I kept one, and we use craft sticks instead of the plastic ones that came with it. We use another mold in the car to keep little items sorted, like change, gum and mints and charging cords. It's set in the center console and works great!" -- M.R. in California * A tub full of soapy bubbles after a kids' bathtime? Shake salt on the foam and watch it disappear! * "To loosen grime in the shower, run the shower hot for a few minutes and then use a cleaner. The heat and steam make it easier to clean. Or you can clean up the shower just before you clean up yourself." -- T.G. in Texas * When moving, pack a suitcase or two with essentials for a few days: toiletries, clothing, medicines, etc. This way, the pressure is off to everything set up right away. * "To make sure you don't get any slipped stitches when you're interrupted while knitting or crocheting, just clip the work at the needle with a clothespin. It stays put, and you can pick it right back up after you are done taking a break." -- C.C. in Arkansas
* "My 3-year-old wants to help with EVERYTHING these days, so when I clean house, I give her a spray bottle with plain water and a large, clean cloth. She's responsible for 'cleaning' the sliding glass door, which she does very well and safely. I also have her dust shelves and fold washcloths." -- R.V. in Arizona * A nuisance papercut can be sealed up with regular household glue. Just dab a bit on the cleaned and dried papercut, and let it dry. * Clean a coffee grinder with a cup of uncooked rice. Process it through, then dump the contents.

Is this common? Who is absorbing the cost? Does my PCP bill for consultation? -- M.M.E. ANSWER: Hospitalists are specialists in inpatient medicine. Hospitalists typically have no outpatient responsibilities, and spend the entire day in the hospital taking care of admitted patients only. Because they are constantly in the hospital, they usually can see an admitted patient more expeditiously than a doctor with outpatient responsibilities, and they tend to become expert and efficient at managing serious illness requiring hospitalization. Most studies comparing hospitalists with doctors who do both outpatient and inpatient medicine have shown that hospitalists facilitate decreased lengths of stay in the hospital and at least as good medical outcomes. The theory is that by specializing in just inpatient medicine, one can become expert as well as very efficient at using the resources available at a particular hospital. The potential downside of hospitalists is that the personal knowledge about a particular patient isn't as high. Your PCP knows you -- hopefully very well, if he or she has been taking care of you for a long time. Although your records may be available to the hospitalists, it isn't the same as personal knowledge. That being said, with good communication (both ways) between your doctor and the hospitalists, the quality of care can be excellent. There is no doubt that the hospitalist model is increasing in prevalence in the U.S. and Canada. In answer to your question, your insurance company (or the government) pays the hospitalist directly. The PCP does not bill for consultation. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Meniere's disease. We cannot find anyone who can help him. Is there any medication for this? -- L.M. ANSWER: Meniere's disease causes episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and eventually hearing loss. It is caused by swelling in the organ of balance in the inner ear, but the reason for the swelling isn't clear. Before being seen by a doctor, your husband can try to identify triggers for the attacks. Common triggers include a high-salt diet, tobacco, alcohol and stress. A low-salt diet can dramatically reduce episodes.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently spent four days in the hospital for a respiratory infection. I was not admitted to my primary-care doctor's service, but had three names on my wristband. When I inquired as to who they were, I was told that they were hospitalists. They would see me and communicate with my primary-care physician. I have read cautionary reports from the bike community about such things, but they seem to focus on the more exposed body parts. Lance Armstrong comes to mind in this regard. -- Anon.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 90 years old and take many medications. I am having many different dreams at night. Can medications cause this? -- A.C. ANSWER: Pretty much whenever I get the question, "Can medications cause this?" the answer is "yes." In your case, it's very clear that some medications cause unusual dreams in many people who take them. Antibiotics, antidepressants, blood pressure medications and even sleeping medications can cause remarkable dreams. Some people hate this side effect; others enjoy it. Knowing that medications could be causing them often is a source of relief. I would caution you not to stop your medications suddenly or without talking to your doctor. You should go over your list of medicines and try to discover which are the most likely to be the source. Sometimes, a medicine can be stopped if the dreams are very bothersome. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old man who likes to ride his bicycle for exercise. I ride on paved trails and streets, approximately 10 miles at a time with an eye on extending the length of my rides. I own a road bike, but currently I ride a bike that provides a more upright seating position. In either case, the seat is narrow and firm. My body is in a forward-leaning position while riding. Should I be concerned with my prostate gland or any other body parts in that general area? I wear padded bicycle shorts when riding. I have annual physicals, and I am not aware of any problems. I do have an older broth-
ANSWER: There is research looking at three areas of men's health with regard to cycling: prostate, sexual dysfunction and testicular cancer. The results suggest no or very small increased risk in prostate cancer or sexual dysfunction. However, some bike saddles and riding positions do put pressure on the nerves and arteries that supply the penis. Finding a comfortable saddle that doesn't cause numbness, avoiding very long rides and standing up periodically on the pedals can prevent problems. Biking shorts help most people. Although some early studies did link cycling with testicular cancer, most authorities now believe there is no such link. In fact, regular exercise reduces risk of both testicular and prostate cancer. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 73 years old, with osteoporosis and scoliosis. Can scoliosis be corrected? -- W.E.W. ANSWER: Osteoporosis is loss of strength of the bones, and scoliosis is a curvature of the spine. They may or may not be related. The osteoporosis should be treated, but the scoliosis usually does not need to be treated. Muscle strengthening exercises are important, and braces and injections may be used. Surgery is reserved for very severe cases, particularly in adults. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Lolita was torn away from her home and her family at a young age, but she still has a chance to swim in her native waters and maybe even see her mother again if the Seaquarium will commit to retiring her to a seaside sanctuary. We know for sure captivity at the Seaquarium kills. It has already killed Hugo— Lolita's only orca friend, who bashed his head into the walls of his concrete tank at the Seaquarium until he died in 1985. The Seaquarium should give Lolita a chance at freedom

SUNDEWS This week, Tidbits turns its attention to one of the largest varieties of carnivorous plants, the sundew. • There are nearly 200 species of sundews, commonly known as Drosera, with the highest concentration found in Australia, home to almost half of the varieties. South America and Africa each have 20+ species, with Europe, Asia, and North America accounting for a few. The plant especially likes bogs, swamps, and marshes. North America’s four species are mainly found along the east coast, the Gulf Coast, and the Florida panhandle. • The flowers of the sundew are lovely rosettes that attract pollinators. The size varies between a tiny 0.4 inch (1 cm) and 39 inches (100 cm). The climbing species can reach a height of nearly 10 feet (3 meters). • The leaves of the sundew plant are covered with spiky tentacles, with the tip of each containing a nectar gland that secretes a sticky, sugary digestive enzyme. The name of the plant comes from the shiny drops of the gummy substance that resembles a drop of morning dew. Insects landing on the leaf get stuck in the “dew,” and as they struggle to free themselves, the tentacles wrap around the bugs, eventually suffocating them, about a 15-minute process. Each gland performs three functions – it attracts the insect, ensnares it, and then provides the enzymes necessary for the digestion process, absorbing the nutrients necessary for survival.
• Even the miniscule legs of a small gnat are enough to set the trigger hairs of the tentacle into motion. • Because sundews can obtain extra nutrients from insects, they can survive in poor soil where other plants can’t. If adequate insects aren’t available, the sundew can obtain some nutrition from the soil, enough to survive for long periods of time. Certain varieties are able to live 50 years. • Although the insect-catching process is similar to that of the Venus Flytrap, the sundew’s mechanism is more complex, because its leaf can bend in nearly any direction depending on the size and shape of the bug. After it is finished with its meal, the leaf returns to its original size and shape. • Since sundews are a beautiful plant, some folks like to cultivate them as ornamental plants. This can prove difficult in many ways, first and foremost, in the problem of even obtaining them. Many gardeners feed them with fish food pellets, live insects when possible, and bloodworms. If the plant doesn’t have sufficient light, it will fail to produce its characteristic dew. Most species require absolutely pure water, free of nutrients, salts, or minerals, as these substances can stunt their growth or kill them. It’s recommended that growers use only distilled water or rain water. • Since the 12th century, some European sundews have been used as a medicinal plant, said to cure coughs and respiratory ailments. Many modern-day naturopaths and herbalists advocate sundew tea for bronchitis, whopping cough, lung infections, stomach ulcers, and asthma, and have shown effectiveness as an anti-inflammatory. Sundews are an ingredient in more than 200 registered medications today.

bags is not produced with PFOA. As always, read the label. 3) You should NEVER use a paper bag to make microwave popcorn. Plain and recycled papers often are made from unknown materials that could catch fire or interfere with microwave cooking technology. Use pre-packaged microwave popcorn or microwave-safe popcorn poppers, or the traditional stovetop method, or an electric popcorn popper. Here are my suggestions to put some flavorful POP into your plain popcorn! VEGGIE POPCORN: Pulse 2 cups each mixed veggie chips and dehydrated snap peas in a food processor until powdery; toss with 8 cups hot popcorn and 2 cups each veggie chips and dehydrated snap peas.
ADD POP TO PLAIN POPCORN On a recent movie date night with my husband, I spent a small fortune on a bag of popcorn at the snack bar. I must admit, although it hurt my wallet, I was able to take comfort in the fact that plain popcorn is actually a good snack choice -- especially for diabetics, as it does not impact blood-sugar levels. In fact, one serving of popcorn (about 3 cups) can provide about 70 percent of our recommended daily intake of whole grain and energy-producing complex carbohydrates. Popcorn contains no cholesterol, is virtually fat-free (only 0.1 g per cup) and contains only 100 to 150 calories in a serving of five popped cups. Popcorn also contains a number of essential vitamins, including iron, folate, niacin, riboflavin, thiamin, pantothenic acid and vitamins B6, A, E and K, with lesser amounts of calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc. It also contains fiber, providing roughage the body needs in the daily diet. Air-popped popcorn has only 30 calories per cup; oilpopped popcorn has only 35 calories per cup. When lightly buttered, popcorn contains about 80 calories per cup. Here are some facts about popcorn you should know: 1) There has never been, nor is there currently, any genetically modified organism (GMO) popcorn or popcorn seed for sale in the U.S. or international markets. 2) Microwave popcorn does not contain perflourooctanoic acid. PFOA is sometimes used in grease-resistant coatings for paper, such as fast-food wrappers, candy wrappers and pizza box liners. The grease-resistant coating in the majority of microwave popping
SZECHAUAN CHILE POPCORN: Heat 1 cup each peanuts and dried arbol chiles, 1/2 cup each peanut oil, sesame seeds and Szechuan peppercorns, and 4 teaspoons each sugar and kosher salt in a large skillet over medium heat until the nuts and chiles are toasted, 4 minutes; pour over 16 cups hot popcorn. Toss with 2 tablespoons toasted sesame oil. SRIRACHA LIME POPCORN: Whisk 5 tablespoons melted margarine with 1/4 cup Sriracha, 1 1/2 teaspoons grated lime zest and 1 tablespoon lime juice; drizzle over 16 cups hot popcorn and toss. SALT AND VINEGAR POPCORN: Combine 1/4 cup malt vinegar and 2 teaspoons kosher salt in a small spray bottle; shake to dissolve the salt. Spray over 16 cups hot popcorn. PEANUT BUTTER POPCORN: Heat 1 cup honey or agave syrup and 3/4 cup sugar substitute over medium heat, stirring, until dissolved and well-combined, about 5 minutes. Stir in 1 cup peanut butter and 1 teaspoon each vanilla extract and kosher salt until smooth; pour over 16 cups hot popcorn and add 2 cups peanuts, if desired, and toss. Spread on baking sheets and let cool. PEANUT BUTTER-BANANA POPCORN: Make Peanut Butter Popcorn recipe above, add 1 cup dried banana chips and 1/2 cup chocolate chips with the peanuts. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks.
