• Helen “Nellie” Taft, during a visit to Tokyo, greatly enjoyed the annual cherry blossom festival. When her husband William Howard Taft became the 27th president in 1908, she was determined not only to beautify the White House, but also to improve the city as well. Cherry blossoms were just what she needed. Unfortunately, a search of every nursery in the U.S. turned up only 100 or so saplings. Undaunted, Mrs. Taft contacted the mayor of Tokyo, who graciously donated 3,000 saplings. However, when they arrived they were found to be infected with an agricultural pest and were destroyed. When the Tokyo mayor heard, he joked about George Washington being the first president to set an example of destroying cherry trees— then he sent a new shipment. Today, Nellie Taft’s city improvement program is still enjoyed by millions of people. • Nellie Taft was the first First Lady to ride in her husband’s inauguration parade; the first to publish her memoirs; the first to own and drive a car; the first to support women’s suffrage; the first to smoke cigarettes; and the first to fight for federal safety standards in the workplace.

ELEANOR ROOSEVELT • Franklin Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt were distant cousins who knew each other from childhood. When they got married in 1905, Eleanor’s uncle, President Theodore Roosevelt, gave away the bride. • Eleanor championed civil rights causes while she was First Lady. She attended the Southern Conference on Human Welfare in Alabama in 1939. When she found that the audience was segregated, with blacks on one side and whites on the other, she protested by putting her chair into the center aisle that separated the races. • Soon after Eleanor arrived in the White House, she hired a professional cook to spend a few days teaching her staff how to prepare special dishes. One day, Eleanor’s German shepherd rushed up and bit the cook on the ankle. Eleanor, running in to find out what the commotion was about, declared, “That settles it! From now on, we will have iodine kept in this room!” …turn the page for more

First Ladies (continued):
• While entertaining some Russian dignitaries, Eleanor took them to see a Fourth of July parade. The Russians were accustomed to seeing great displays of military strength during their own parades. When a group of young men marched by in uniforms, they enquired, “Military?â€? “No,â€? she replied, “Boy Scouts.â€? Then another group of uniformed men marched by. “Military?â€? they asked. “No,â€? she said. “Volunteer ďŹ re department.â€? Next a car drove by, and inside it were four aging veterans, stuffed into uniforms they had long ago outgrown. “Military!â€? she announced triumphantly.
• In 1964, Lady Bird was travelling from Cleveland to Washington, DC. Her secretary called ahead to a Howard Johnson’s restaurant to make reservations for Mrs. Johnson. After they left, a reporter interviewed the waitress. “How did it feel to serve Mrs. Johnson?â€? “I was pretty nervous,â€? replied the waitress. “Have you ever met a First Lady before?â€? inquired the reporter. “First Lady?â€? cried the waitress. “That was Mrs. Lyndon Johnson? I thought it was Mrs. Howard Johnson!â€? • In 1967, LBJ was giving a speech which dragged on as the audience grew restless. Lady Bird slipped him a note that said, “Close soon.â€? LBJ held the paper up, then read it aloud. After the laughter died, he continued his speech as usual.
MAMIE EISENHOWER • Eleanor Roosevelt was the ďŹ rst presidential spouse to hold regular press conferences, write a daily newspaper column, write a monthly magazine column, host a weekly radio show, and speak at a national party convention.
LADY BIRD JOHNSON • Claudia Alta “Lady Birdâ€? Johnson, wife of Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ), loved the TV Western series “Gunsmokeâ€? and never missed an episode. She excused herself from dinner one evening, explaining that she had a “previous engagement.â€? She was later disappointed to ďŹ nd that James Arness, who played Matt Dillon on the program, Republican. • Lady Bird was unsuccessful in her attempts to get LBJ to lose weight. One night she was awakened by the sound of clinking metal, and discovered it was coming from the kitchen, where she caught LBJ red-handed with a metal spoon and a bowl of pudding. The next day, LBJ instructed an aide to go buy him a wooden spoon.

• Due to a mix-up, Ike and Mamie Eisenhower received an engraved invitation to attend their own inaugural ball in 1953. Laughing, Mamie asked Ike what she should do about it. “Turn it down,â€? he said. “Tell them we’ve got another engagement.â€?
BETTY FORD • When she was a young child, Betty Ford once came home from school crying because she had been teased about a birthmark on her arm. Her mother explained to her that she was the only little girl in the entire world who had a mark just like that, and so she was very special and unique. She went back the next day with her head held high. • Betty Ford inspired both rage and admiration when she was interviewed on “60 Minutesâ€? in 1975. Preachers and editors across the country condemned her for her views, but others praised her honesty and open-mindedness. • In one room stood a golden statue of a winged woman with a bowl on her head and an outstretched hand. Every time Betty Ford passed the statue, she would place something in the outstretched hand, such as a cigarette, which the White House staff removed.
FLORENCE HARDING • When Warren Harding began courting Florence Kling, her father disapproved because he was of a lower social standing. Warren was the editor of the local paper at the time. When they married in 1891, Florence’s father boycotted the wedding and refused to speak to his daughter for the next seven years. It was 15 years before he ever set foot in his son-in-law’s house, even though they lived in the same town. Presumably he changed his mind when Warren was elected 29th president in 1921.

* On Sept. 19, 1827, Jim Bowie nearly kills a banker in Louisiana with an early version of his famous Bowie knife. The actual inventor of the Bowie knife, however, probably was his equally belligerent brother, Rezin Bowie, who reportedly came up with the design after nearly being killed in a vicious knife fight. * On Sept. 30, 1868, the first volume of Louisa May Alcott's beloved children's book "Little Women" is published. Alcott's subsequent children's fiction included "Little Men" (1871) and "Jo's Boys" (1886). * On Sept. 23, 1875, Billy the Kid is arrested for the first time after stealing a basket of laundry. He later broke out of jail and roamed the American West, eventually compiling a rap sheet that allegedly included 21 murders. * On Sept. 20, 1881, Chester Arthur is inaugurated, becoming the third person to serve as president in that year. Earlier in 1881, Rutherford B. Hayes finished his term and James Garfield was sworn in. Garfield was shot by a crazed assassin and died on Sept. 19. Arthur was sworn in the next day. * On Oct. 1, 1908, the first production Model T Ford is completed. Between 1908 and 1927, Ford would build 15 million Model Ts. The cars were powered by a 22-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and could go as fast as 40 mph.

* On Sept. 29, 1913, Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the engine that bears his name, disappears while traveling by steamship from Belgium to England. On Oct. 10, his body was found floating in the water. His death was judged a suicide, but many people believed Diesel was murdered. * On Sept. 21, 1939, President Franklin Roosevelt appears before Congress and asks that the Neutrality Acts be amended. Roosevelt hoped to lift an embargo against sending military aid to countries in Europe facing Nazi aggression. * On Sept. 24, 1964, President Lyndon Johnson receives the Warren Commission's report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. Its conclusion that Oswald was a "lone gunman" failed to satisfy some who witnessed the attack. * On Sept. 22, 1971, Capt. Ernest Medina is acquitted of all charges relating to the My Lai massacre in Vietnam. His unit was charged with the murder of over 200 Vietnamese civilians in a cluster of hamlets in March 1968. Thirteen others were charged with various crimes, but only Lt. William Calley was found guilty. * On Sept. 18, 1987, cesium-137 is removed from an abandoned cancer-therapy machine in Brazil. Hundreds of people were eventually poisoned by radiation from the substance. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD -- Mark Wahlberg tops Forbes Magazine's list of highest-paid actors for 2017 with $68 million (pretax), thanks to "Transformers: The Last Knight"; "Daddy's Home 2," arriving Nov. 10, with Will Ferrell and Mel Gibson; and the ironically titled "All the Money In the World," with Michelle Williams and Kevin Spacey, due Dec. 8. This doesn't include the fortune he's making from Spectrum commercials and "Wahlburgers" (the series and the hamburger joints). He also makes big bucks for producing. No. 2 is "The Rock," Dwayne Johnson, up $50 million this year with $65 million from "Baywatch," "Jumanji" (out Dec. 20), "Rampage" (coming April 20), "Skyscraper" (July 13 release) and "Fighting With My Family." He also added coin for successfully producing. Another actor producing for really big bucks is Vin Diesel, whose slice of the billion-dollar grosser "The Fate of the Furious," made him No. 3 at $54 million, with help from "The Return of Xander Cage" and "Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2." Coming in at No. 4 is Adam Sandler, who went to Netflix this year in a big way and raked in $50 million for "Sandy Wexler," with Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, Kevin James, Terry Crews and Rob Schneider; "The Meyerowitz Stories," with Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson and Dustin Hoffman; and "The Week Of" with Chris Rock and Rachel Dratch. Add monies for writing, producing and lending his voice to the animated "Hotel Transylvania 3," and it stacks up big. No. 5 Jackie Chan still is the top grosser in China, where he made seven films this year, as well as "Shanghai Dawn," the sequel to "Shanghai Knights" (2003), again

with Owen Wilson; and "The Foreigner," with Pierce Brosnan, for a total of $49 million. *** Remember Steve Howey of "Reba"? He's gone to the dogs! His just-released film, shot in 2015, is "Unleashed," in which a cosmic storm turns him (a dog) and the family cat into two perfect men who vie for dates with their mistress. When you watch the film, see if you can spot Kathy Garver, who played older sister Cissy in the 1960s sitcom "Family Affair." Brad Pitt is returning to acting in the sci-fi epic "Ad Astra," with Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Jamie Kennedy and Ruth Negga, in which he searches the solar system for his missing father. Pitt has 35 projects optioned to produce and/or star in. That's one way to get over a divorce! Two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank, now onscreen with Channing Tatum in the mediocre "Logan Lucky," has completed "55 Steps," with Helena Bonham Carter and Jeffrey Tambor; "What They Had," with Michael Shannon, Robert Forster and Blythe Danner; and is executive producing and starring in "Intimate Strangers." No doubt it will be a "Swank Production." (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: My sister and I got hooked on this series we found on Netflix called "Versailles." Can you tell us when or if it will be back for another season? -- Jennifer T., via email
George Blagden Photo courtesy George Blagden
A: The lush and intriguing period piece will indeed be back for a second season. "Versailles" -- which airs first across the Pond in France and Great Britain -- will return to Ovation TV in the States with 10 new episodes on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 10 p.m. ET, with a Netflix premiere a few months later (an exact date has not yet been revealed). In season two, the uprising of separatists continues to threaten Louis XIV (played by George Blagden of "Vikings" fame) -- his life, his crown and all that he holds dear -- as they jockey for control of France. Drugs, gambling and alcohol are rampant as nobles begin to poison each other to get closer to the king and climb the social ladder. Blinded by his passion for his mistress Montespan, Louis refuses to listen to the advice of the church and his closest advisers. The new season sees Greta Scacchi in the role of Madeleine de Foix, along with newcomers Harry Hadden-Patton, Suzanne Clement, Catherine Walker, Mark Rendall and Jessica Clark. *** Q: It seems like I've been waiting forever for my ABC Wednesday-night primetime lineup to return. Can you tell me when that will be? -- Keenan F., Asbury Park, New Jersey A: The wait is almost over. Starting Sept. 27 at 8, we have the season premieres of "The Goldbergs," "Speechless," "Modern Family," "American Housewife" and "Designated Survivor." Speaking of the latter, ABC president Channing Dungey told TV Line that this season of "Desig-
nated Survivor" won't be as twisty-turny as season one, explaining: "As much as we love the twists and turns and the cliffhangers, what we're really looking forward to exploring in season two is some of the character relationships and some of the interpersonal dynamics in the White House." *** Q: I have waited all summer for the next chapter of the "Curse of Oak Island." Fall is almost upon us and I haven't seen or read when the show will resume. Please tell me it IS coming back! -- Genny F., Summerfield, Florida A: I can't give you a definitive answer, but I can tell you what I do know. The last episode of season four gave the show its highest-ever ratings. Viewers are dying to see what the Lagina brothers will discover on that island. The brothers themselves are growing weary of the search and do not relish leaving their families for four or five months out of the year. Series creator Kevin Burns told "Local Express": "We are not set to come back for another year; take of that what you will." But he also said the History Channel would "jump at the chance" to renew the show. and kids are aiming to pare down the things that keep them chronically busy and out of balance. "You have to have enough capacity to do what's important," he said. "There's only so much time and energy for all five of us to absorb things into our schedule." "But what do you do when you have tempting extras to tag on?" I asked. "We sit down together and determine the non-negotiables, whether that's family dinners, game nights or going to church together. Even taking a family vacation. The process requires a lot of pruning, but we build our schedule around those. Is it family time or another sports practice? One thing is sure, we know sticking to the non-negotiable activities promotes a healthier family life," he said.
PRUNE FALL SCHEDULES TO GAIN FAMILY TIME Before heading home to Minnesota from our cabin in the California coastal mountains, I dropped by the Anderson family's lively backyard on a Saturday morning to say good-bye. Between feeding chickens and harvesting veggies, I caught Josh, a dad with three daughters under 10, with pruning shears in his hands showing 8-year-old Selah how to trim small branches from their healthy lemon tree. "When we cut away this growth and dead branches, it creates space for more life, for more fruit to grow," he explained to her. As prickly branches tumbled to the ground, he likened what he was doing to family life this fall. Just like pruning the tree, he told me that his wife
The lemon tree metaphor and lesson in pruning activities not only applies to young families but to all of us with kids in our lives. Dr. Laurie Bunnel, educator in the Seattle area and mom of two teens with one off to college, faces the overscheduled dilemma, too. "Many parents are trying to be time heroes, driven and sometimes proud to be able to pack everything that comes into their lives into a day. But we can't do it all, even when we think we should. Focus on priorities that give your life a rhythm of working and resting," she suggests. Maybe the start of this new fall season is a good time for you and your family to do a little lifestyle pruning. A family meeting to determine your non-negotiables is a good place to start. Keep thinking of those pruning shears, and cut activities that crowd out meaningful time with those things that matter most. Like that lemon tree, removing those cluttering branches provides more space for healthy living ... and growing.

you can see what's available in your area by putting in your ZIP code. The next page will give you a list of choices. You can choose up to three facilities to compare. On each facility's profile page you'll have a choice of patient preferences, managing pain and treating symptoms. Click on each one and you'll be shown the facility's score compared to the national average.
MEDICARE ADDS TOOL TO COMPARE HOSPICES The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services already has tools to help seniors make informed decisions about health care: Physician Compare, Hospital Compare, Home Health Compare and Nursing Home Compare. Now it's taken the next step with Hospice Compare. The website www.medicare.gov/hospicecompare just recently launched online. Right from the front page it's helpful: You can search for a hospice agency by name, or
While all of the categories are important in hospice care, some might carry more weight than others. For example, there's a category about patients being asked about preferences for resuscitation, and patients who got a thorough pain assessment within one day of finding that pain is a problem. Once you've scouted the various facilities, go back to the front page of the website and click on "Here are some good things to know about hospice care." Read as much as you can about Medicare and hospice services and what is required in each one. Then click on Learn more about how Medicare covers hospice services. AVOIDING FALLS AT HOME When a senior falls, it can be the first step in physical decline. A hospital stay or time in rehab might be required, which can result in overall weakness and fear of a second fall. That fear can lead to cautious movement, which leads to more physical weakness. We don't need to start down that path. There are a number of steps we can take to reduce the chance of falling -- and staying independent. * The first and biggest step is to declutter the floor. This means rerouting electrical cords, moving furniture and removing small rugs away from where you walk. Get rid of stacks of newspapers and magazines. * Install grab bars in the bathroom and anti-slip mats in the shower or tub. Consider using a shower chair. * Take exercise classes designed to improve your balance, such as yoga for seniors or tai chi. Ask your doctor if a weight training or muscle resistance class is appropriate for you to keep your bones strong. * Turn on the lights! Use nightlights in the bedroom and bathroom. Keep a flashlight handy. Open the drapes during the day. * Keep your eyeglass prescription current by seeing your eye doctor at least once a year. For helpful ideas and resources, if you have Internet access, go to the National Council on Aging website at ncoa.org and search for falls prevention. Also see the websites for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov) and Mayo Clinic (mayoclinic.org). If you need help organizing your home to avoid falls, ask! affordablesalesandrentals.net • We speak Russian, Spanish, Portugese and Hebrew Dud of the Year: Dak Prescott, QB, Dallas Cowboys The NFL history books are littered with tales of quarterbacks who had one great season (think Matt Leinart, Scott Mitchell or Ken O'Brien) and were never able to do it again. History shows that in order to be worth anything in this league, you have to do it at least twice.
A GIANT YEAR IN THE NFL I don't know about you, but this summer seemed especially boring in the world of sports. Save for Aaron Judge's first half, Dale Earnhardt's retirement, Kyle Bush's trifecta, Mayweather-McGregor and Federer's win at Wimbledon, there was not a lot going on. Luckily, the NFL is back. I'm not going to give any fantasy predictions, but these are three things that I'd hang my hat on for the upcoming season:
Prescott did it very well once, but now he has no running game with Ezekiel Elliott suspended for six games. Defenses can lay back and concentrate on stopping the pass. How Prescott reacts will determine whether or not the Cowboys made the right move in handing the franchise over to him. Personally, I think he is up to the task, but if I had to bet, he'd be the guy I'd be least surprised by having a bad year. Super Bowl Pick: New York Giants defeat New England Patriots In addition to the potent Manning-Beckham Jr. attack, the Giants will have one of the best, if not the best, defenses in the league. I see them passing Green Bay in the playoffs in order to get New England, a juggernaut that defies description.
Most Valuable Player: Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants New CBS color commentator Tony Romo (who booted Phil Simms from the gig) got it right when he hailed Manning in a preseason interview with New York Newsday. "He's a legend of the game, and he's still playing," Romo said. "The good ones play through [rebuilding years] and come out of it with a good team on the end. ... I think Eli is one of those." Manning is a fierce competitor, even though his demeanor seems to indicate otherwise. Nobody takes a sack as well as Manning ... it's almost at the level of martial arts. Whenever he's hit, he rolls with it and hits the ground on his terms. That's why he never missed a start in 14 seasons. Also, it's pretty easy to see whether or not the Giants will win any game. If Eli comes out firing and making completions, hitting that window, the Giants almost always win. They're one of the Super Bowl favorites this year, and he's a huge reason why.
Looking at their schedule, it's not a stretch to see the Giants, 11-5 last year, improving to 14-2, and if they don't, it would be a MAJOR letdown. Really, the only tough teams on their schedule are the Seattle Seahawks and the Oakland Raiders. The Giants will battle every NFC East team, and although a loss to the Cowboys, Redskins or Eagles away certainly could be in the cards, this team is playoff-bound if it gets its running game together.

Then of course, you can (and I hope you will) look at adopting a dog from your local shelter, whether purebred or a mutt.
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Recently, a friend recommended that I give my Lhasa Apso, "Cherie," acupuncture treatments to cure her anxiety. I told her I've never heard of dogs getting acupuncture! My friend then told me that there are other treatments for dogs, like massage, homeopathy and more. Do these things really work? -- Curious in San Angelo, Texas DEAR CURIOUS: Almost any alternative therapy available to humans today is available to pets as well (especially dogs and cats) in many areas of the U.S. That includes acupuncture, massage, chiropractic and even energy healing arts like Reiki. Acupuncture has a few scientific studies behind it, and while the jury is still out on how well it can reduce dogs' anxiety, studies have found that acupuncture can help relieve pain. A 2006 study published by the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine found "encouraging data" worth pursuing in future studies, saying there was no reason to recommend or reject acupuncture as an effective treatment for animals. Just as with humans, massage can help relax muscles and relieve the chronic pain of arthritis, and chiropractic also has been shown to be helpful. A 2016 study by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association combined acupuncture with massage, for example, and noted that after treatment, "significant improvement was seen in the dogs' ability to walk, trot, jump and rise from a lying position." However, whether energy healing works or not depends on who you ask. The effects of healing therapies like Reiki on pets are hard to measure. There is a great deal of skepticism about their effectiveness, so approach such treatments cautiously, and research both the treatment and the person offering it before trying it out on Cherie.

A search online for small- and medium-sized breeds will give you a good overview of the different traits of each breed. Basenjis, for example, don't bark – which is great if you don't want to annoy your neighbors – but also are energetic and playful. Pomeranians and Chihuahuas can be big barkers and even somewhat aggressive. Bulldogs are impressive, but can suffer from specific health problems.

Dogs take quite a bit more attention and training than cats, of course. While they can make great companion pets, they will need daily walking and behavior training. Because they'll likely spend more time indoors than outdoors, you'll need to monitor their diet and make sure they get enough exercise.

DOGS IN THE POOL? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: During a recent cookout one of our friends said it's a bad idea to let our dog "Chet" in the pool because dogs can spread germs and their hair clogs the filters. What's your take? I'd hate to keep him out. -- Pam in Fort Myers, Florida DEAR PAM: While your friend's concerns are valid, there are ways to minimize problems that can arise when swimming with your dog. Germs can be an issue if a dog is dirty or ill. If, for example, Chet were to roll around in muck on a walk and then leap into the pool, that is definitely going to affect water cleanliness. Excess shedding can lead to fine hairs being drawn into the pool's filter system, or even getting through the filters and fouling up the works. Here are a few things you can do to keep the pool clean and let Chet continue having fun: * Rinse your dog's coat before allowing him into the pool; rinse again after the swim to keep pool chemicals from irritating his skin.
MOST NEEDED ITEMS: Canned ready-to-eat items with pull tops: vegetables, fruit Peanut butter Snacks: granola bars, breakfast bars, etc. Toiletries Paper goods Diapers Cleaning supplies: mops, mop buckets, brooms, bleach wipes, bleach, garbage bags, bug spray
VOLUNTEER: There are many organizations that currently need volunteers to help in the wake of the devastation of both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey. Find opportunities at: RedCross.org JustServe.org VolunteerFlorida.org/irma/
* Keep Chet's nails trimmed, so he doesn't scratch other swimmers when paddling around. * Brush his coat regularly to remove stray hairs. * Don't allow him in the pool if he's under the weather, has diarrhea or if his skin is dry, cracked or has sores. * Check the pool's pH levels daily, chlorinate on schedule and manually skim the surface after each swim to nab fine particles. * If you have guests over, make sure they're OK with Chet joining them in the pool. If not, keep him inside and let him swim another day.

figural novelty clock that could blink its eyes. "Blinkers," also called "winkers," were made in many shapes. An organ grinder with a monkey, Topsey, Mammy, Sambo the Banjo Player and John Bull examples have sold in auctions during the past five years for prices from $500 to about $1,000.
BLINKING-EYE CLOCKS Clocks were an important part of the Victorian home. Large grandfather clocks were kept in the front hall or living room to tell time, ring chimes on the hour and even tell the phases of the moon. The only public sources of time were the train station, city hall or church tower clocks. Smaller clocks that told time were kept on the fireplace mantle and were made to be decorative with bronze figures as part of the case in formal homes, and plain or even comic cases in others. Almost all clocks had to be wound for up to eight days. Bradley & Hubbard, a Connecticut company that made many iron and other metal items, had an 1857 patent for a
John Bull is a character who was a popular symbol of England from 1712 to the 1940s. New England Auctions sold a 16-inch John Bull blinking eye clock for $416 in 2016. *** Q: I have a coffee bin that was in my grandparents' general store in the late 1800s or early 1900s. It's marked "Dilworth's Prime Grade Coffee." The markings were made with a stencil. There is a shipping label on top, but I can't read the date. Does it have any value? A: Dilworth's was in business in Pittsburgh during the late 1800s and early 1900s. John Dilworth was one of the founders of a wholesale grocery company, which operated under various names until 1881, when it became Dilworth Brothers Co. Collectors like early advertising items and if the lettering is in good condition, your bin has value. The shipping label is a plus. Large wooden coffee bins sell for $300 to $500. the prevalence of preventable illnesses associated with excessive meat consumption. Meatless Monday has grown into a global movement. Research shows that Monday is the day people commit to all kinds of healthy behaviors. It's the perfect day to make small, positive changes, like going meatless. For more information and meatless recipes, go to www. meatlessmonday.com/favorite-recipes/. This week, put a Mexican twist on your Meatless Monday menu with this delicious, family-friendly recipe for Black Bean Wraps With Jicama Grilled Salsa.
BLACK BEAN WRAPS WITH JICAMA GRILLED SALSA
GOING MEATLESS I enjoy creating and preparing meatless meals. We started adding a meatless menu to our regular meal plans years ago when we were trying to save money. We didn't realize it then, but we were also saving our lives. Going meatless may reduce your risk of preventable chronic conditions like cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A meatless meal also can help reduce our carbon footprint and save precious resources like fossil fuels and fresh water.
1 cup dried black beans 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 medium onion, diced 1 medium carrot, diced 1/8 cup diced celery 3 cloves garlic 3 cups water 1/2 cup cooked quinoa 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

For the Jicama-Grilled Salsa: Though it can be challenging to serve healthy meals on a budget, going meatless can help conserve money for more fruits, vegetables and grains. Meat tends to be more expensive, in part because producing meat requires extra expenses like feed and transportation. With the average American eating as much as 75 more pounds of meat each year, "one day a week, cut out meat" is a way for us to do something good both for ourselves and for our planet. During World War I, the U.S. Food Administration urged families to reduce consumption of key staples to aid the war effort. "Meatless Monday" and "Wheatless Wednesday" were introduced to encourage Americans to do their part. The effect was overwhelming: More than 13 million families signed a pledge to observe the national meatless and wheatless conservation days. The campaign returned during World War II, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt re-launched it to help that war's efforts on the home front. In the immediate post-war years, President Harry S. Truman continued the campaign to help feed war-ravaged Europe. Meatless Monday was revived in 2003 by former ad man turned health advocate Sid Lerner, in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for a Livable Future. Reintroduced as a public health awareness campaign, Meatless Monday addresses
1 cup diced jicama 1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 jalapeno, seeded and minced 1 cup grilled or boiled corn kernels 1/2 medium red onion, diced, optional 1/4 cup red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup olive oil 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 16 (8-inch) whole-wheat tortillas 1 1/2 cups baby spinach 2 large Haas avocados 1/4 cup fresh, minced cilantro
To make the jicama grilled corn salsa: 1. In a medium bowl, toss together the jicama, green and red bell peppers, jalapeno, corn and red onion, if using. In a blender, combine the vinegar, lime juice, garlic, mustard, salt and pepper. Blend well, then slowly add olive oil. Drizzle the vinaigrette over the salsa and stir to combine. 2. Wrap tortillas in aluminum foil and warm in 350 F oven, or wrap in damp food-safe paper towels and microwave on HIGH for 30 to 45 seconds until warmed through. 3. Spread 1 tablespoon of the black-bean puree down the middle of each tortilla, then top with spinach, avocado, salsa and cilantro. Roll up and serve. Serves 8 (2 tortillas each). ***
1. Soak the black beans overnight in cold water in the refrigerator. Drain and rinse the soaked beans. 2. In a medium saucepan over moderate heat, warm the olive oil. Add the onion, carrot, celery and garlic; saute, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent, about 3 minutes. Add the beans and 3 cups water and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes. Remove beans from the heat and cool. 3. Transfer the beans to a food processor and puree until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl, add the cooked quinoa, and stir to combine. Season with salt, pepper and cayenne.

* Wondering which loan you should focus on first in your debt-free strategy? Shoot for the one with the highest interest rate, generally. Or, if you're the type who needs motivation beyond the knowledge that you are freeing yourself financially, stack them smallest to largest. When you pay off the balance on the smallest loan, fold that extra payment up to the next smallest loan and so on until you are debt-free! * Toothpaste is a mild abrasive, and it's suitable to buff out small scratches in a CD. Just dab a bit on, rub lightly with a soft cloth and rinse. * If you haven't already, plant your spring flowering bulbs now before the first frosts! * "I replaced my beat-up tension rod in the bath, and immediately had a thought to use it for hanging clothes in my narrow laundry room. It gives me a space to hang items coming out of the washer for air drying. When it's not in use, it's easy to remove and lean against the wall." -- N.L. in Pennsylvania * Stuffed peppers bake nicely when put into the wells of a greased muffin tin.

Just as you would pencil in dates for doctor's appointments and teeth cleaning, add reminders for pulling a credit report, adjusting your withholding, increasing your retirement contribution or reassessing your personal savings. * To maintain a 1 pound per week weight loss, you'll need to burn or forgo 3,500 calories per week. If you're not already a hard-core athlete, consider addressing poor nutrition coupled with moderate but regular workouts to make gains! * If you're on a home-renovation budget, don't forget to consider the considerable power of paint. Look for pieces that can be customized to your look with a bit of sandpaper and paint at bargain and resale outlets, thrift stores and even the trash dumpster. It's good for your wallet, and reusing existing goods makes environmental sense. * "When I put on a pair of stockings, I use a dryer sheet to take away static cling. Dissent, rebellion and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots." * Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, was one tough son of a gun. In his youth, his fighting prowess won him fame as a national hero for defeating the British at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 -- and he never slowed down, it seemed. At the age of 67, he was at a speaking engagement when a member of the audience pulled out a gun and tried to shoot him. When the gun misfired, President Jackson used his walking stick to beat his attacker almost senseless.

You might be surprised to learn, then, that the world's largest manufacturer of tires is actually Danish toy company The Lego Group. It's true;
Thought for the Day: "Humanity needs dreamers, for whom the disinterested development of an enterprise is so captivating that it becomes impossible for them to devote their care to their own material profit. Without doubt, these dreamers do not deserve wealth, because they do not desire it. Even so, a well-organized society should assure to such workers the efficient means of accomplishing their task, in a life freed from material care and freely consecrated to research." -- Marie Curie (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have seen articles in several publications over the years that talk about the dangers of flushing a toilet with the seat up, and all the nasty, germy things that come floating up on droplets of water. While it's enough to scare one, when you think about it and all the public restrooms with toilets that have no seats (let alone not knowing the last person who used it), it's a wonder we're not all sick! I hope this is just misinformation or overblown facts. Can you address this issue? -- J.N. ANSWER: Mostly overblown facts, I think. A study did show that bacteria and viruses can be spread by water droplets around the area of a toilet with no lid (and presumably with the lid up). However, these germs don't go through intact skin, which is why we aren't all sick. The key to not getting infected is handwashing after using the restroom. However, I think keeping your toothbrush a ways away from the toilet also might be a good idea, having read through the research.

Evidence Continues to Mount for Grain Consumption and Against Processed Meat Consumption Whole grain consumption decreases colorectal cancer risk and processed meat consumption increases the risk, according to a new report published by the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research. As part of their Continuous Update Project, an expert panel reviewed the evidence on dietary habits and risk for colorectal cancer and found strong links between processed and red meat and increased cancer risk. Possible mechanisms include heterocyclic amines as a result of cooking meat at high temperatures and heme iron. Three servings of whole grains per day, which provide dietary fiber and various vitamins and anti-carcinogenic compounds, reduce cancer risk by 17 percent.
Vegetarian Diets Reduce Inflammation Vegetarian diets reduce inflammation, according to a review published in Public Health Nutrition. Researchers reviewed 18 prior studies, finding that individuals who followed a vegetarian diet for at least two years lowered their serum levels of C-reactive protein, a biomarker of inflammation, compared with those who did not follow a vegetarian diet. Researchers suspect the credit goes to phytosterols and dietary fiber found in the fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
Children Consuming Too Much Cow’s Milk Children who were part of the Melbourne Infant Feeding Activity and Nutrition Trial (InFANT) Program consumed two to three times more protein than considered age-appropriate, according to results published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Researchers followed 542 mothers and their children’s first
5 years and tracked protein intake and food sources. The primary sources of protein after 9 months of age were cow’s milk and milk products. These sources resulted in excess protein consumption by the majority of participants with respect to current Australian daily recommendations. The authors caution that such high intakes of animal protein sources, particularly cow’s milk, provide poor sources of iron and predict unhealthful body composition later in life.

SEQUOIA • The giant sequoia is the largest tree in the world in volume. It’s a member of the cypress family, along with the redwood tree. Whereas the sequoias are the largest trees by volume, the redwoods are the tallest trees by height. • A sequoia called the General Sherman is the largest tree in the world, with an estimated volume of 52,508 cubic feet in its trunk alone. It was named in 1879 in honor of the Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. • Located in Sequoia National Park in California, the General Sherman is not only the largest living tree, but is also one of the largest living organisms on the planet. At around 2,300 years old, it weighs 2.7 million pounds, is 275 feet tall, and has a 102-foot circumference at the ground. It has branches that are almost 7 feet in diameter. • The General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon National Park, California, is the second largest tree by volume with 46,608 cubic feet. The third largest tree by volume is the President in Sequoia National Park. Researchers estimate that this tree has a whopping two billion leaves. The President is estimated to be 3,240 years old, give or take a few decades, and stands 274 feet tall, which is 31 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty, but 105 feet shorter than the tallest tree in the world, a coastal redwood called the Hyperion Tree. • Giant sequoias are the third longest-lived tree species, with the oldest known sequoia based on ring count being 3,200 years old. The only older trees are bristlecone pines, with the oldest one being nearly 5,000 years old, and Alerce trees of the Andes that can live over 3,500 years. • The bark of a sequoia is commonly two to three feet thick, acting as insulation during fires and protecting against insects and fungus.
Find All the Fun and Games Answers on Page 14! • The wood of the sequoia is very brittle so it is not a valuable lumber species. In spite of this, it was nevertheless extensively logged around the turn of the 20th century. When a sequoia was felled in 1853, it was found to be 1,244 years old. The stump was so large it was used as a dance floor. The wood was so fragile it could be used only for thing such as shingles, fence posts, or matchsticks, and was therefore worth very little. Once Sequoia National Park was established, tourism offered a bigger economic boost than logging. • The trunk of the General Sherman tree could theoretically be turned into almost 120 miles of standard sized lumber planks. A branch that fell from the tree in 1978 had a diameter greater than six feet and was at least 140 feet long, meaning this single branch was larger than any tree in the United States east of the Sierra Nevada and Cascade mountain ranges. • In prehistoric times, the sequoia was found throughout the Northern Hemisphere, but today it’s found only in about 75 scattered groves throughout Northern California. Giant sequoias have extremely exacting climate requirements, so specific that they grow naturally only in a narrow 260mile strip of mixed conifer forest on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, primarily between 5,000 and 7,000 feet in elevation. • Many people walking around the base of giant sequoias can cause them harm, because it compacts the soil around their shallow roots and prevents the trees from getting enough water. • Though there is a story commonly told that the sequoia was named after a Cherokee Indian who invented an alphabet, there is little proof behind the myth. More likely it sprang from the Latin “sequi” (meaning “to follow” as in “sequence”) referring to the sequential number of seeds in the pine cones.
