* On Oct. 26, 1825, the 425-mile Erie Canal opens, connecting the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the canal was dug by Irish laborers who had to rely on primitive tools. They were paid $10 a month, and barrels of whiskey were placed along the canal route as encouragement. * On Oct. 27, 1873, farmer Joseph Glidden submits to the U.S. Patent Office his design of a fencing wire with sharp barbs, an invention that will forever change the face of the American West. * On Oct. 28, 1918, sailors steadfastly refuse to obey orders from the German Admiralty to go to sea in one final attack on the mighty British navy. In total, 1,000 mutineers were arrested despite repeated orders, leaving the Imperial Fleet immobilized. * On Nov. 4, 1922, King Tut's 3,000-year-old tomb is discovered by British archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The tomb contained a stone sarcophagus with three nested coffins. Inside the final coffin, made of solid gold, was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen. * On Oct. 25, 1929, Albert B. Fall, secretary of the Interior, is found guilty of accepting a bribe while in office. Fall accepted a $100,000 interest-free "loan" in exchange for granting a valuable oil lease on federal land. * On Nov. 2, 1947, The Hughes Flying Boat -- the largest aircraft ever
built -- is piloted by designer Howard Hughes on its first and only flight. The wooden aircraft had a wingspan longer than a football field and was designed to carry more than 700 men into battle. * On Nov. 1, 1959, Montreal Canadien Jacques Plante becomes the first NHL goaltender to wear a full facemask. After four broken noses, a broken jaw, two broken cheekbones and 200 stitches, Plante wore the mask, against the coach's wishes. * On Oct. 24, 1969, movie star Richard Burton dazzles wife Elizabeth Taylor when he buys her a 69-carat Cartier diamond ring costing $1.5 million. The famous diamond was the product of a fight in which Burton called Taylor's hands large and ugly. * On Oct. 29, 1998, nearly 40 years after he became the first American to orbit the Earth, Sen. John Glenn, Jr., is launched into space again as a payload specialist aboard the shuttle Discovery. At 77, Glenn is the oldest human ever to travel in space. * On Oct. 23, 2002, about 50 Chechen rebels storm a Moscow theater, taking some 700 people hostage, and demand that Russian military forces withdraw from predominately Muslim Chechnya. Russian special forces pumped in a narcotic gas, knocking nearly all of the terrorists and hostages unconscious. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD -- Matt Damon has two big films coming out: "Downsizing," directed by Alexander Payne, co-starring twotime Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz and Kristen Wiig (due Oct. 27); and "Suburbicon," directed by George Clooney and co-starring Oscar-winner Julianne Moore (out Dec. 22). Now he'll produce and star in "Charlatan" (based on Pope Brocks' 2008 bestseller), in which Damon plays real-life doctor John R. Brinkley, who was accused in 1918 of causing several deaths because of his botched procedures used to cure impotency.

"Dancing with the Stars" should be called just "Dancing," or maybe "Dancing with the Pros." This season even the professional dancers are more famous than the so-called stars. I recognized "98 Degrees" Nick Lachey from his crazy marriage to Jessica Simpson, but could barely recognize his wife, Vanessa (Minnillo) Lachey, from "Entertainment Tonight" reporting and the short-lived Fox series "Dads." Also, singer Debbie Gibson was an '80s pop star, and Frankie Nunez of "Malcolm in the Middle" (2000-06) faded some time ago. Most viewers enjoy watching the dancing and the process of getting there, so either get real stars or stop calling it "Dancing with the STARS"! *** Who'd have thought a guy sitting behind a desk, ranting about current events for 30 minutes, once a week, could beat Colbert, Corden, Kimmel and Samantha Bee as Best Talk Show Host this year. John Oliver won three Emmys for writing "The Daily Show"; one in 2015 for his HBO show "Last Week with John Oliver"; two in 2016 and the three this year (the other two for writing for variety talk and outstanding interactive program). So much for the 90-minute, five times a week talk format.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch, who lost "his" Oscar (for "The Imitation Game") to Eddie Redmayne ("The Theory of Everything"), has won only one Emmy (in 2014) from five nominations, including this year for playing Sherlock Holmes. *** Hedy Lamarr -- the hot screen siren in classic films such as 1933's "Ecstasy" (also the name of her bestselling book), "Algiers" (1938) with Charles Boyer, "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941) with Lana Turner and Judy Garland, and Cecil B. DeMille's epic "Samson and Delilah" (1949) with Victor Mature -- was more than just another sex symbol. Diane Kruger will play Lamarr in a mini-series about her inventions (especially a frequency-hopping radio signal) that led to the creation of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which she wasn't recognized for until long after her death. She's probably better known for when Harvey Korman, playing Hedley Lamarr, in Mel Brooks "Blazing Saddles" (1974), constantly said, "Hedley Lamarr, not Hedy Lamarr!" Had she lived, she would have been in sheer "Ecstasy," as we are with the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi she gave us! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: Please give me some scoop on "The X-Files." The wait is killing me! -- Valerie B., Toledo, Ohio A: You and me both, Valerie. Well, we learned some more info about the upcoming 11th season of the what's-old-isnew-again hit alien/sci-fi series, which premieres on Fox in January. First of all, remember that episode from the first goround that creeped out everyone, "Home"? (Look it up if you don't, because I can't stomach rehashing it here.) Well, the actress who played the under-the-bed mom in that episode will be featured as four different characters (two of which are male) in an episode this next season. Also, as I mentioned before, this 10-episode season will consist of eight stand-alone mysteries and two mythology installments. We will get an episode that deals with the backstory of the Cigarette Smoking Man (played by William B. Davis), as well as one that delves into the life of Mitch Pileggi's Skinner, who also will be featured more heavily this season. The question on everyone minds is where is William -- Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully's (Gillian Anderson) son -- and does he have plans to destroy mankind? The truth is out there ... come January. *** Q: I've been waiting and waiting for news about "Psych." I heard a while ago that they were bringing it back, but since then, crickets. -- Elly W., via email A: The cast of "Psych" will be back -- for a reunion holiday movie. As series star Dule Hill announced via video at the New York Comic Con, the much-anticipated movie will premiere Dec. 7 on USA Network. "Psych: The Movie" reunites the cast of the original series, and also welcomes aboard newcomer John Cena. Fans at Comic Con got to preview the first 20 minutes of the movie at the "Psych" panel, and they were not disappointed by the tease.
Will Kemp Lifetime
*** Q: I've been binge-watching "Girlfriends' Guide to Divorce" on Netflix, and I love the actor who plays badass pastry chef Scott. Can you tell me more about him and where else I can see him? -- Gina T., via email A: Forty-year-old British actor Will Kemp had his breakout role in "Van Helsing," with Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale back in 2004, and has been working steadily ever since. The actor, who also is a dancer, co-starred in "Step Up 2: The Streets" and Lifetime's "Petals on the Wind," both roles showcasing his classical dancing training. Will also played Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley in the CW's historical-fiction series "Reign," which wrapped up its fourth and final season this summer. Next up, he stars with my favorite kickass actress Maggie Q (have you seen her in "Designated Survivor"?) in the feature film "Slumber," a supernatural thriller. The film centers on a sleep doctor (played by Maggie) who tries to protect a family from a demon that feeds on people in their nightmares. Catch it in theaters starting Dec. 1. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

CONTRACTOR DIRECTORY - CONTRACTOR DIRECTORY - CONTRACTOR DIRECTORY marker or pencil. Sitting back to back, one person draws a simple object, such as a car, house or baseball glove, and gives his or her partner directions on how to draw the same thing. The goal of the activity is to provide enough explanation (without saying what the object is) so that when you're done, you'll have a pair of drawings that might be identical, very similar or, in some cases, completely different, even with the same shapes or designs within them. When one person is done, switch roles, with the other partner drawing a new picture and giving directions. Compare results.
SCAVENGER HUNT PLAYING WITH PAIRS Let's pair up, everybody! Sounds like we might be on a basketball court doing drills. Or maybe lining up for recess. Remember second grade? Lots of things we do and use every day such as clothing and accessories come in pairs, and kids become aware of the combinations at a very young age. Even 3- and 4-year-olds like to help sort socks. As children grow, they become more skillful at distinguishing things that are alike and different. No wonder that matching games like Old Maid, Concentration and dominoes are favorites from generation to generation.

Start by gathering items that come in pairs, such as mittens, socks, gloves, shoes, earrings and cufflinks. All players sit on the floor in a circle. Place all items in the middle of the circle. An adult or older child hides one member of each pair of objects in rooms throughout the house. Work in pairs to hunt for the objects. As one is found, bring it to the circle and match it with its mate. See how many pairs each team can make. Extra idea: Ask your kids to think of things that are referred to as a "pair" even though they are really one item. For example, a pair of pants, scissors, eyeglasses, binoculars, pliers, shorts, tights, earbuds, etc. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Best bet: If this is your first time signing up, or if you know you need to make changes to your plan but need help, get advice. There's too much at stake to just pick a plan you haven't studied. On the Medicare website, look for contacts and select your state, then look for State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Or call Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE.
TIME FOR MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT Medicare has open enrollment every year between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. It's the only time you can make changes to your existing plans. Making decisions about Medicare can be tough because once you make any changes, you have to live with them for a year. Here are a few things to know: * When you sign up during open enrollment, coverage will start Jan. 1, 2018. * If you've already had Medicare, you'll receive a Medicare & You booklet in the mail. Spend the time between now and December reviewing it and deciding if you need to make any changes. * By now you should have received notices in the mail as well, either a Notice of Change or Evidence of Coverage, and maybe both. These will tell you whether there are changes to your existing plan and whether the costs are changing. * If you go with an Advantage plan, you'll also likely need a Part D drug plan to go along with it. If you have an Advantage plan and don't like it, now is the time to make a change. * Many people who like their current plan do nothing and are automatically re-enrolled, but beware: There might be changes in the plan's cost and coverage that you won't know about unless you read the notices. To review other possible plans, go online to www.medicare. gov and look for the plan-finder tool.

HURRICANE PETS NEED HOMES If you've considered getting a pet, this might be the perfect time to adopt one. A side effect of all the hurricanes we've had is the number of animal shelters that are completely filled. Either the owners can't be found or the families have no homes to go back to and are living in shelters that won't allow pets. In hurricane-hit areas, adoptions have plunged because people have so much to do just to take care of their families. Across the country, other shelters have taken up the cause and have run caravans (even planes) to bring rescued animals to areas that weren't hit by hurricanes. Many shelters have lowered adoption fees so more animals can find homes. When adopted, all the animals will have been through quarantine and given shots and exams. What do you get out of it if you adopt a pet? The short list is more social interaction, less stress, lower blood pressure, increased physical exercise and structure to your days. Add to that the gratitude of an animal that's been through crisis and is now in a loving, forever home. If it's not possible for you to adopt a pet, consider being part of the welcoming committee when the animals arrive. They'll be anxious from the long ride, eager to move around. They'll need lots of TLC to calm down, and baths and soothing words. The shelter might need extra toys, leashes, food and blankets. Perhaps you can volunteer to be a collection point for those items.
Or you could foster an animal on a short-term basis. Who knows ... it's possible that in opening your home and heart to a homeless cat or dog that you'll decide to make the arrangement permanent. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

1. Who was the last Kansas City Royals player before Eric Hosmer and Salvador Perez in 2016 to hit a home run in the All-Star Game? 2. How many teams did Hall of Famer Mike Piazza play for during his 16-year major-league career?
KISS MY GLASS The game has changed -- all of them -- and it's now up to ownership to understand the risks that fans are now being subjected to for no apparent reason. When slap shots started to dent people's heads in the NHL, things like helmets and plexiglass came into vogue. It took a few deaths before baseball moved to wearing helmets at bat. Football is struggling to figure out how to protect its players, but the NBA's plexiglass backboards have worked pretty well insofar as not obstructing a fan's view or sending a splinter into someone's arm. But we have a problem in Major League Baseball. Times have changed, and the danger that modern athletes wielding supercharged bats at superfast balls is literally ruining lives. A Cubs fan is suing because he took a foul off his eyeball, blinding him and subjecting him to a life of migraines. A little girl was smashed in the face at a Yankees game during the pennant race. Busted bats are stabbing people in the stands. Hey, baseball, this has got to stop. The game has fundamentally changed. Baseball is now a power game where seemingly everybody is swinging maple bats and pitchers are blowing 100 mph-plus fastballs with astonishing regularity. This was never the
Then in the 1980s, strikeout king Nolan Ryan was clocked throwing faster than anyone ever before by judges at the Guinness Book of World Records. By the '90s, he was still throwing 100 mph on the mound as pitchers like Greg Maddux posted ERAs that rivaled Cy Young's. An anomaly would be a guy like Mark Wohlers, Kyle Farnsworth and Neftali Perez ... guys who could throw 100 mph with regularity but had a hard time keeping the ball over the plate and in the park. Today, that's not the case. Seemingly everyone and their little brother throws 100-plus mph. Take Luis Severino for the Yankees, throwing 103-mph fastballs after 130 pitches in the playoffs this season, only to give way to relievers who also threw 100-plus mph fastballs. A deflection is enough to maim anyone in the stands for life. Yet baseball, soooo open to change (sarcasm), can't seem to figure out how to protect fans. A guy is going blind, babies are getting smashed to the face, but baseball is worried that netting will "ruin the view." Here's a clue for you owners: plexiglass. The NHL figured that out decades ago. Guess what? That won't ruin the view, and it will solve your problems and probably save lives as players get bigger and stronger each passing year. When Todd Frazier ripped that foul ball with an exit velocity of something like 108 mph into a toddler's face, baseball players literally put their hands to their mouth, took a knee and cried. Do I even need to say it? THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL. Fix it before someone fixes it for you in a court of law. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. If you're not sure when he pees there, or can't be at home at the time, crating Socks during periods you're away may be helpful. Don't keep him in the crate for more than a couple hours at a time.
ICE CREAM MELTED, BUT PETS SAVED
HOUSETRAINED PUPPY MAY NEED A REFRESHER DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My new Beagle puppy, "Socks," keeps peeing in the same spot on the carpet every day. I thought he was housetrained when I adopted him from the shelter, and I've been careful to take him out each morning. But his third day here he peed on that spot and he's gone there every day since. What can I do? -- Wits' End in Maryland DEAR WITS' END: This can happen with any dog at just about any age, even if it is well-housebroken. There are a number of reasons why -- from health issues to anxiety. First, get Socks checked out at the vet to rule out any issues, like a urinary tract infection, that might cause a lapse in housetraining. This is something you should do anytime there's a sudden change in a pet's behavior. Then you'll need to clean the area thoroughly to remove as much of the pee smell as possible -- not just for your nose, but to stop Socks from identifying the area so easily as a place to pee. If he's peeing on carpet, you will likely need to replace that section as well as the padding underneath. Next, reintroduce a stricter routine for a while. That doesn't mean punishing Socks for a housetraining mistake; rather, it means a tighter training routine for both of you. If you know the approximate time that he peed on the carpet, put him on a leash at that time and take him outside. Give him lots of praise when he pees outdoors.
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: It never seems to end, despite all the public-service announcements: People still leave their pets locked in their cars on hot summer days. I just spent an hour in front of the supermarket, with my groceries melting in my own car, making a report to a police officer who had to break someone's car window to get in and rescue two dogs panting inside. The windows weren't even cracked, and the sun was beginning to get hot. This is Georgia in early summer, and the heat is merciless. I locked up my groceries and went looking for the owner first. I had the store page its customers, and I went into each of the small stores of the shopping center and asked if the owner was there. No response, so I called the police. It's amazing how fast the owner appeared after the police officer, who couldn't unlock the door using a tool, smashed in the passenger side window.

The owner was pretty mad at me, but I gave him his chance. He was even madder when he got a citation. But I don't care, even if the ice cream in my car did melt. It's worth it to know that those dogs weren't injured. -- Doreen A., Marietta, Georgia DEAR DOREEN: I'm so glad those dogs weren't hurt! Your story is a great example of what to do if you notice pets in a locked car. It also IS OK to call the police first so that the door can be opened faster; you can enlist others to search for the owners while waiting for the police. A: Pokemon started out as a video game for Game Boy in February 1996. The name Pokemon is a contraction of the words "Pocket Monster." The first Pokemon cards were Pocket Monster cards issued in Japan in October 1996. There were 102 cards in the set. The first Pokemon cards in English were in the Demo Game pack, issued in limited quantity in December 1998. The first set of 102 cards in English was issued in the U.S. in January 1999.
ALL-WOODEN WASHBOARD The 19th century in the U.S. was a time of invention. The patent office at first required a working model of an invention, but later, just accurate drawings and details were enough. Victorians loved gadgets and specialty tools. There were hundreds of patents granted for apple peelers, lighting devices, corkscrews, fruit jars, washing machines, washboards, toasters, napkin rings and cooking pots, and today there are collector clubs for almost every one of these specialties. An unusual all-wooden washboard was sold in 2016 by Hess Auction Group. It has threaded wooden rollers instead of a corrugated metal or glass rubbing surface. The maple rollers rolled in opposite directions and, according to the ads, the "screw threads do all the work." The first wooden rollers were made by the Hubbard Brothers, and the Mother Hubbard Roller Washboard was a popular item sold door-to-door in the early 1900s. The washboards were no longer made after 1935, because they were not needed if you had an electric washing machine. At the 2016 auction, a Mother Hubbard Patent Roller Washboard sold for $195.
There are over 700 different Pokemon characters today. Incomplete sets of cards sell online for a few dollars. Value is determined by rarity and condition. The best place to find current values is to go to a card show or to a store that sells cards.
HOLLYWOOD DECO Fifties furniture is very popular with vintage collectors today, but some earlier Art Deco designs from the 1930s are not in demand. Look at old movies on television to study some of the stranger pieces. The look is sometimes called "Hollywood Deco" because the extravagant rooms with huge round mirrors and sofas were exaggerations of the modern furniture used in average homes. An unfamiliar cabinet was sold recently at a Garth's auction. It was a flat, round cabinet on a base. When placed against a wall, it showed all of the 51-inch diameter of the cabinet and the glass doors and shelves waiting to display a collection. The plain solid base stretched beyond the rounded sides to give safe support for the top-heavy design. This type of cabinet was made in the 1930s, but most for sale today were made in England, not the U.S. Most have no maker's name and the wood choice suggests it was not expensive when new. Some were oak or even mahogany, but many were made of laminate with grain painting.
*** Q: How much are the 1996 edition of Pokemon cards worth? The cards are American and Japanese, and are in albums, but a few are missing. We think some might be worth something. How can we find out?
A cabinet like this sold at a Midwestern auction in 2016 for $450. A selection of similar round modernist curio cabinets found online had asking prices as high as $2,000, but most of these are in English shops and prices were cut to less than $500.

This unusual round cabinet was made to hold a collection of curios or china. It was sold at a Garth's in Ohio auction for $450. *** Q: I'd like some information about a pitcher and washbowl made by Edward Clarke. It's marked on the bottom with two touching shields. The words "Edward Clarke, Tunstall, Trade Mark, Stone China" are above the shields and "Stone China" below. A: Edward Clarke made earthenware and white ironstone at Phoenix Works in Tunstall, England, from about 1865 to 1877. That's when your pitcher and washbowl were made. They probably were part of a commode set that included a soap dish, chamber pot and other items. Before there was indoor plumbing, a commode set or chamber set was kept in the bedroom and emptied each morning. *** Q: I came across an old R.C. Allen 10 Key Calculator Model 35 that my dad used for his business. On the front, it says "World Famous 10 Key Calculator, American and Swedish Patents." A: Ralph C. Allen founded his company in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1932. It also manufactured and distributed cash registers and typewriters. Your calculator was made in 1948 and originally sold for $397. Old calculators are not very useful and not popular collectibles, so they are very hard, if not impossible, to sell. ***

AN APPLE A DAY THE EASY WAY
Fall is the best time for harvesting and eating apples. Apples that ripen in late summer do not keep as long as apples harvested in the fall. Apples ripen six to 10 times faster at room temperature than if they are refrigerated. Fuji is one type of apple that can be stored for a long time. It will retain its texture for several months.
There is some truth to the old saying about the health benefits of eating an apple a day. One apple has about 80 calories and about four grams of fiber. Two-thirds of the fiber and lots of antioxidants are found in the peel of an apple. Antioxidants help to reduce damage to cells, which can trigger some diseases.
A good apple should be bright, crisp and juicy. Fresh apples need to be stored in a cool place (about 32 F to 40 F) to help keep them fresh and prevent rotting. Be careful not to get below 32 degrees F, because freezing will quickly deteriorate fresh apples.
Apples are the second-most valuable fruit grown in the United States. Oranges are first. The top apple producers are China, United States, Turkey, Poland and Italy.
Think beyond apples eaten out of hand or in a dessert. Using apples in savory dishes is a great way to incorporate fruit into your daily diet. Try these recipes for Ap-
ple and Gouda Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, and Crispy Chicken with Apples and Brussels Sprouts. My husband is 56 and has several keloids on his body, but there is one on his chest that has gotten considerably larger over the years and causes the most problems. He has experienced pain and discomfort, and it also bleeds at times. My husband would prefer not to have surgery. He was born with a keloid on his ear. ANSWER: A keloid (from a Greek word meaning "tumor-like") is a complication of scar tissue. In some people, when the skin heals from a cut or a burn, the healing cells keep growing, creating a variably sized, disfiguring, sometimes painful lesion called a keloid. The best treatment in people who are predisposed to keloids is to avoid them by avoiding any unnecessary surgery (including ear and other body piercings). Once a keloid has formed, there are several possible treatments. Unfortunately, the longer a keloid has been there, the harder it is to treat. I have seen great results from silicone gel sheeting. This is particularly effective when used immediately after surgery, but may have some effectiveness on your husband's chest keloid. Another potentially effective treatment is injection of steroids, which help flatten and shrink keloids up to 75 percent of the time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had a fall on ice and suffered a severe concussion. I was unconscious for several minutes. At the hospital, I had a CT scan, but there was no damage. Two months later, I had an episode where I became dis-

oriented and the room was spinning. I was taken to the hospital, given Antivert without success and kept overnight. A physical therapist came the next day, did some vestibular rehab that helped some, and I continued it at home as needed. The episodes are getting worse, and neither the Antivert nor the exercises are helping. Could this be due to the fall? My ENT says no. -- G.M.
balance system that caused the vertigo. Thus, it's concerning that you may still be taking it. I have seen many people taking meclizine long term and having persistent vertigo.
ANSWER: You clearly have vertigo, but whether it is due to the fall isn't clear. Certainly, people with postconcussion syndrome get dizziness and vertigo, but in most cases I have seen, it starts soon after the trauma: Two months is longer than I have seen. Headaches also are common in postconcussion syndrome, but their absence doesn't mean your vertigo is NOT due to the fall.

Vestibular rehab is the best treatment we have for vertigo. If it's not working, it may be time to re-evaluate and make sure there isn't another cause for the vertigo.

fewer calories, compared with those who consumed the meal high in animal protein. The low-protein meal was as satiating and palatable as the animal-based, high-protein meal. Researchers suspect high fiber intake as a possible mechanism behind the satiety. This study supports previous data on bean consumption and weight management.

OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY INCREASES RISK FOR 13 TYPES OF CANCER Excess body fat increases the risk for 13 different types of cancer, according to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Researchers reviewed cancer diagnoses from 2014 and assessed links between cancer rates and overweight and obesity. Overweight and obesity-related cancer rates increased between 2005 and 2014 and accounted for 40 percent of cancer diagnoses that year. These cancer types include postmenopausal breast, stomach, liver, and ovarian cancers. The authors call for treatments and interventions, such as exercise and a healthful diet, which address both rising cancer and obesity rates.
tracked blood pressure measurements. Mothers with higher blood pressure readings during the second and third trimesters increased overweight and obesity risk in their children by 49 percent and 14 percent, respectively. The authors suggest clinicians monitor blood pressure throughout pregnancy, as results also showed changes in blood pressure between the first and third trimesters affected children’s obesity risk.
HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN MOTHERS LINKED TO CHILDHOOD OBESITY
Beans, peas, and other legumes increase satiety more than animal-based protein sources, according to research published online in Food & Nutrition Research. Researchers compared outcomes from three different meals: one high in animal protein, another high in plant-based protein, and one plant-based, low-protein meal. Out of 43 participants, those who consumed the plant-based, high-protein meal felt more satisfied while consuming

Children and adolescents with low intakes of phylloquinone, a form of vitamin K, may be at risk for enlarged heart valves, according to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Researchers followed diet records for 766 participants aged 14-18 and monitored vascular structure and functionality. When compared to those with the highest intake of vitamin K from foods such as spinach, cabbage, and other leafy green vegetables, those with the lowest intake were more likely to experience vascular enlargement. This type of enlargement, normally observed in adults, typically results in elevated blood pressure and other cardiac complications. The authors suggest these findings may develop treatment and prevention initiatives aimed at improving cardiovascular function in children and adolescents. UNUSUAL PLANTS:
www.TidbitsFlorida.com • October 20, 2017 • 15 •Although there are more than 200 varieties of blossoming cherries, the most popular variety in Japan is the Yoshino. The Japanese call the cherry blossoms “sakura.” The trees belong to the rose family, with the average tree about 25 feet (7.62 m) tall. With special care, they can reach upwards of 50 feet (15.2 m), with a 40-foot-wide (12.2 m) canopy. It’s primarily Yoshinos that line D.C.’s National Mall and the Potomac waterfront.
CHERRY BLOSSOMS In 1912, Japan gifted the United States with 3,020 cherry blossom trees. This week, Tidbits focuses on these beautiful trees’ characteristics and history. •Japan’s gift in 1912 weren’t the first cherry blossom trees to hit the North American continent. In 1906, Dr. David Fairchild, an official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, imported 100 flowering cherry trees from a Japanese nursery and planted them on his own property in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After two years of testing the trees’ hardiness in the area, Fairchild ordered 300 more trees, which were given to the schools in the District of Columbia to plant in their yards to honor Arbor Day.. •In 1909, trees were planted along the Potomac River beginning at the Lincoln Memorial. The following year, the City of Tokyo donated 2,000 cherry trees to be planted along the River. However, upon the trees’ arrival, it was discovered they were infested with insects and disease, and all the trees were burned. The 1912 gift was a replacement for the diseased trees. •In the Spring of 1912, First Lady Helen Taft and the wife of the Japanese Ambassador, Viscountess Chinda, planted two cherry trees on the northern bank in Washington, D.C.’s East Potomac park, trees that still stand in their original site. •Washington, D.C.’s first annual Cherry Blossom Festival was held in 1935, coinciding with the trees’ early spring full bloom. There are now 11 different varieties of cherry blossom trees in the Park. •In 1965, Japan donated another 3,800 trees, the first two again planted by the First Lady, Lady Bird Johnson, and the wife of the Japanese ambassador, Ryuji Takeuchi.
•The date for the peak blossoming in Washington, D.C. is around April 4. The blooming period lasts about two weeks. •Cherry blossoms and leaves are frequently used as food ingredients in Japan. Blossoms are pickled in salt and vinegar and used in a sweet bun called anpan. Salt-pickled blossoms are also boiled in water, a beverage called sakurayu, served at festive events
•There are close to 4,000 cherry trees in D.C.’s park, but it’s not the nation’s largest collection. That honor belongs to Newark, New Jersey’s Branch Brook Park, the oldest county park in America, where about 4,300 trees are planted. Philadelphia also has more than 2,000 flowering cherry trees, half of which were gifted by the Japanese government in 1926 to honor the 150th anniversary of America’s independence. •The streets and parks of Vancouver, Canada are lined with an estimated 50,000 flowering cherry trees, many of which were also gifts from Japan. But the title of Cherry Blossom Capital of the World belongs to Macon, Georgia, a city with more than 300,000 trees scattered throughout its streets and parks. A local realtor discovered a tree in his Macon backyard in 1949, and made it his mission to bring more of the trees to the community.
