• After an oil spill, researchers found that when oil-covered guillemots (a type of seabird) were rescued, cleaned up, and then released back into the wild, 70% of them died within two weeks after being released. • The Florida scrub jay is omnivorous and eats whatever is available. Humans often provide nuts and seeds which are very nutritious for the adult scrub jays. However, scrub jays that are regularly fed by humans are fooled into thinking that spring has arrived early. They build their nests, lay their eggs, and hatch their young earlier than normal. The newly-hatched scrub jays are unable to digest nuts and seeds, and they have unfortunately been born before nature’s natural bounty of grubs and bugs is readily available. They suffer from stunted growth and starvation. • Birds that live in New Guinea eat poisonous beetles without suffering ill effects. The deadly neurotoxins they ingest collect in their feathers and skin, making the birds poisonous.

BIRDS (continued):

• European starlings line their nests with plants that inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungus as well as preventing lice, mites, and ticks from hatching. • The eyeball of a human is round and can easily turn in the eye socket. But the eyeball of an owl is tubular, and therefore cannot turn in the eye socket. This is why owls need to be able to swivel their heads 270 degrees. • Parrots have much bigger brains relative to body size than any other group of birds. In fact, the brain-to-body ratio of parrots is even larger than some primates. • Cuckoos are famous for laying their eggs in other birds’ nests, forcing the adoptive parents to raise the imposter chicks. But a bird called the blackcap is able to tell a cuckoo’s egg from its own eggs, and consistently throws the intruding eggs out of the nest. (cont’d) • Crows that see a grub in a hole often find a twig to use as a lever to extract the grub. If it’s a wide hole, they will choose a wide twig. If it’s a narrow hole, they’ll pick a skinny stick. If it’s a deep hole, they’ll find a long stick, and will get a short stick if it’s a shallow hole. They will also take a stick that’s not quite right and break it into the correct size. • Vultures like to eat eggs of other bird species. If it’s a small egg, they will carry it in the air and drop it on the ground to break it open. But if it’s a large egg and too big to carry, they will instead grab stones and drop the rocks on the egg from a height until it cracks open. • Crows like to eat nuts and clams but find them hard to open. Many crows have perfected the art of dropping these items on hard pavement to crack them open, with some going so far as to drop them on a busy roadway where the cars will roll over them. They then wait for the stoplight to change so they can retrieve it. • Greenbacked herons will drop things on the surface of a calm pool to act as bait. Seeds, flowers, feathers, and dead flies float on the surface until a fish comes to investigate, whereupon the heron snatches it up. • The rufous hummingbird visits hundreds of flowers in any given day without ever visiting the same flower twice until it has had a chance to refill with nectar. • Roosters will often give a call indicating that they have found food, even when they have none. A hen will hurry over to see what kind of food he’s got, which gives the rooster an opportunity to try to mate with her. • Two male Japanese quail will fight for the right to mate with a female Japanese quail. Surprisingly, the female prefers to mate with whoever loses the fight. This is because the winner tends to be a more aggressive bird who will often bully his mate. (cont’d)

• Although it is said that opposites attract, in nature that is not always true. For instance, pinyon jays that find a partner who is similar in weight and age produce more offspring than pinyon jays that are unequally matched. Barnacle geese raise larger families if they are similar in size than if the couple is composed of one large and one small individual. Great tits are birds similar to a chickadee. They fall into two camps: those that like to explore, and those that like to stay home. The pairing will be more successful if each partner has a similar desire to either explore or stay home. • Black-tailed godwits mate for life, but the pair does not spend their entire life together. They raise their family over the summer months, and in the fall they set out to migrate south. However, they don’t migrate together. Each of them goes to a different place to spend the winter months. In the spring, they return to their mating grounds and somehow manage to find each other again, usually arriving within three days of each other in April. • A female pigeon cannot lay eggs if she is alone; her ovaries will not function unless another pigeon is in view. Sometimes all that is required is a mirror, so she can see her own reflection. • The kiwi, a New Zealand bird, lays an egg equal to a quarter of the mother’s weight. • If a chicken has a white earlobe it will lay a white egg. If a chicken has a red earlobe, it will lay a brown egg.

• About 7% of zebra finches stutter, getting stuck on a portion of their song and repeating it until they finally continue the tune. • When a male penguin starts incubating a single egg for the two months required for it to hatch, he weighs around 88 lbs. (40 kg)When he finishes, he weighs half that. • The mature yolk of an ostrich egg is the biggest single cell found in nature.

HOLLYWOOD -- Chris Pine, fresh from the $821 million "Wonder Woman" grosses, has completed the science-fantasy film "A Wrinkle in Time," opening March 9 with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling and Zach Galifianakis. Pine currently is shooting the Netflix historical action film "Outlaw King," in which he plays Robert the Bruce, opposite "Nocturnal Animals" Oscar-nominee Aaron Taylor Johnson. Sadly, you'll have to wait until December 2019 for the "Wonder Woman" sequel.

Hugh Jackman, who shredded his body to make nine "Wolverine" films and returned to his musical roots in "The Greatest Showman," with Zac Efron, Michele Williams and Zendaya (opening Christmas Day), is now filming the political comedy/drama "The Front Runner" (for director Jason Reitman, who gave us "Juno" and "Up in the Air"). Jackman is playing 1988 presidential candidate Gary Hart, who dropped out when the scandal of his extramarital affairs made headlines. His co-stars are Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons and Oscar-nominee Vera Farmiga (for Reitman's "Up in the Air"). Based on Matt Bai's bestselling book "All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid," it's very timely for what's happening in politics today. ***

Carell rose through the ranks in "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" (2004) and "Bewitched," then starred in "The FortyYear-Old Virgin" (2005), "Get Smart" (2008), the "Despicable Me" (2010) franchise and "Crazy, Stupid, Love" (2011). Carell has completed the Amazon studios "Beautiful Boy" (produced by Brad Pitt), co-starring Oscar-winner Timothy Hutton and Maura Tierney, and is now shooting "Back Seat" (also produced by Pitt), with Oscar-winner Christian Bale and Amy Adams, and Robert Zemeckis' "Last Flag Flying," with Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne (opening November 2018). He's also shooting director Robert Zemeckis' fantasy drama "The Woman of Marwen," with Leslie Mann and Diane Kruger. *** Andrew Garfield, Oscar nominated this year for "Hacksaw Ridge," must have been disappointed by the poor turnout for Martin Scorsese's "Silence" (especially after losing a ton of weight to do it). He's currently on screen in "Breathe," with "Downton Abbey's" Hugh Bonneville, and has completed the neo-noir crime thriller "Under Silver Lake," with Riley Keough (Elvis' granddaughter) and Topher Grace ("That '70s Show"). Q: Can you tell me when my favorite show, "UnREAL," will be back? -- Keri R., via email A: Lifetime's critically acclaimed series -- which gives a fictitious behind-the-scenes glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a dating competition program called "Everlasting" -- will return for its third season on Monday, Feb. 26, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Caitlin FitzGerald comes aboard as Serena, the female "suitress" of "Everlasting." Serena will face off with the show's queen bees, producers Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby) and Quinn King (Emmy-nominee Constance Zimmer), who are shaking things up, all for the sake of ratings. The ladies will be tempted more than ever when they're surrounded by hot new suitors, including Bart Edwards, Alex Hernandez, Adam Demos and Alex Sparrow.

Returning to the show are Rebecca Romijn, Christian Kane, Lindy Booth and John Harlan Kim as protectors of the world's mystical treasures, with John Larroquette resuming his role as their reluctant caretaker. Special bonus: Noah Wyle recurs in seven of 12 episodes this season as Flynn Carsen, the role he played in the movie trilogy. ***

Returning to the show are Craig Bierko, Josh Kelly, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman and Genevieve Buchner. Joining the cast are Brandon Jay McLaren as the on-set psychologist, Dr. Simon; Kassandra Clementi appearing as Chet's new girlfriend, Crystal; Chelsea Hobbs as Charlie, a talented new camera assistant; and Jaime Callica as Xavier, a dancer and Jay's love interest. *** Q: I've always loved "The Librarians" movies, and I've tried to keep up with the series. Will there be any more seasons of the series, or perhaps another movie? -- Hattie M., Des Moines, Iowa A: TNT's "The Librarians" will be back for a fourth season, which is slated to launch with a two-episode premiere on a new night, Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT). The hugely popular fantasy series is based on, as you mentioned, TNT's hit movie franchise of the same name, and centers on an ancient organization dedicated to protecting an unknowing world from the secret, magical reality hidden all around.

READERS: I told you I'd let you know when I received more information about "Final Vision," the true-crime drama based on the longest running criminal case in U.S. history, and I now have a premiere date: Sunday, Dec. 10, at 8/7c on Investigation Discovery. The movie stars "Scandal" alum Scott Foley as Jeffrey MacDonald, a handsome, Ivy League-educated U.S. Army Green Beret doctor who was convicted of brutally murdering his pregnant wife and two young daughters in the middle of the night. The story is told through the eyes of best-selling author Joe McGinniss (played by Dave Annable of "Brothers and Sisters"), who was approached by MacDonald to write a book about his personal nightmare as he was about to go to trial. Immediately following "Final Vision" will be an enhanced encore of "Jeffrey MacDonald: People Magazine Investigates" at 10/9c. IF YOU DON'Y TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUMS, IT CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

GUM DISEASE AND HEART DISEASE: "We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not." Dr. OZ Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., FACS Director, Cardiovascular Institute Columbia Medical Center, NYC ABC News, Good Morning America Several studies have shown that periodontal (gum) disease has a direct association with heart disease. Scientists believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the link. Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions. Patients at risk for infective endocarditis may require antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. See your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing. Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States. It can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth and it may become more severe over time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and start moving around in your mouth. This is the most common form of periodontitis in adults but can occur at any age. It usually gets worse slowly, but there can be periods of rapid progression.

DIABETES AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE: Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease, which in turn can increase blood sugar and diabetic complications. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of di-

abetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. Research has suggested that the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease goes both ways - periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar. Severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar, contributing to increased periods of time when the body functions with a high blood sugar. This puts people with diabetes at increased risk for diabetic complications.

STROKE: Additional studies have also pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one study that looked at the causal relationship of oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to those in the control group.

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST? A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. Periodontists often treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease or a complex medical history. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned) or root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed). They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using a range of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants. During the first visit, the periodontist usually reviews the patient’s complete medical and dental histories. It is extremely important for the periodontist to know if any medications are being taken or if the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy. The periodontist examines the gums, checks to see if there is any gum line recession, assesses how the teeth fit together when biting, and checks the teeth to see if any are loose. The periodontist will also take a small measuring instrument called a probe and place it between the teeth and gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets; this helps the periodontist assess the health of the gums. X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below the gum line.

Andrew Forrest, D.M.D., M.S. is the clinical director of Premier Dental Group. He oversees a team of eight advanced trained dentists. He is a specialist in Periodontics and Dental Implants. He has been practicing dentistry for 13 years. His research on the interdisciplinary management of Cancer Treatment, Irradiation Therapy, and Implantology was completed at the University of Miami in 2001. This research awarded him the Straumann ITI Implant Dentistry Scholarship Award. While attending Dental School, Dr. Forrest completed two Periodontics externships, the first at New York University and the latter at Harvard University. He completed his externship in Anesthesiology at the VA Medical Center in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Forrest completed his three year specialty training in Periodontics and Implant Surgery at the University of Florida, Shands Hospital. During that time, he also completed his Masters Degree with a focus on Oral Immunology. His heritage in the dental profession spans three generations. Presently, Dr. Forrest has a teaching appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Periodontics at the University of Florida. The focus of his practice centers upon the surgical reconstruction of supporting tissues for the preservation of teeth and Dental Implantology. To date, Dr. Forrest has placed more than 6,000 dental implants. He lectures to other dentists on how dental implants can improve a patient’s quality of life cosmetically and functionally. Dr. Forrest is also a faculty reviewer for the Periodontics Chapter in a McGraw Hill textbook. Currently, he is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, Florida Society of Dental Anesthesiology, Florida Association of Periodontists, and the Memorial Hospital Dental Study Club. During his residency at University of Florida, Dr. Forrest worked on many complex multidisciplinary cases. He realized at a very early point in his career that he could make a positive impact on the quality of people's lives. At Premier, he helped create a team of collaborating dentists, who work together to treat some of the most challenging patient cases. His center has turned into the “go to” destination for South Florida’s Professionals and A-listers for smile makeovers. His team has treated models, actors, athletes, and notable socialites. Each member of his team has been thoroughly selected and vetted. He has encouraged the team of specialists to treat patient cases comprehensively, thereby maximizing treatment efficiency and patient care. Patients benefit from this cohesive environment by receiving all of their dental care from one center. Dr. Forrest was born and raised here in South Florida. His team practices in a modern treatment center that comprehensively focuses on all aspects of dental care. Premier Dental Group is a team of highly qualified, advanced, specialized dentists. More importantly, his team cares about their community. Their mission, simply put: Premier Dental Group is committed to providing dentistry that changes people's lives; in doing so we change our own.

Women equaled men in the Medicare insurance planning section, with both getting 76 percent of answers correct. Women also bested men (just barely, at 38 percent versus 35 percent) in paying for long-term-care expenses.

WILL YOUR MONEY LAST THROUGH RETIREMENT? Think you have your retirement financial planning well in hand? Well, a new study shows that you might be in for a rude surprise when the time comes. The American College New York Life Center for Retirement Income commissioned a survey of retirement income planning, and the results are disturbing. Only 35 percent of men passed the quiz; only 18 percent of women were able to. The quiz covered a dozen different categories, and judging by the results, the topic of annuity products in retirement was the most difficult.

touch & take off!

The survey found the most glaring problem is that while many women know they're not knowledgeable about retirement income planning, the majority still believe they'll have enough money to live on. Why is that? Are women secretly depending on men to be on top of financial planning, answering on the quiz that they make joint decisions, while the men replied that they (the men) were actually the ones in charge? There is one ray of hope in the survey: The majority of women believe that it's important for their financial adviser to educate them ... while a minority of men responded that way. Ladies, we live longer. If anyone should be more concerned about having enough money for a long retirement, it's us. At the very least, we should know what our monthly retirement budget looks like. To see how you do on the retirement quiz, go online to retirement.theamericancollege.edu. Scroll down to the red box on the lower right. There are 38 questions. After you take the quiz, you can check your answers. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

1. Who was the last Boston pitcher before Rick Porcello in 2016 to open a season 10-0 at Fenway Park? 2. In 1956, the home-run champion of each league faced each other in the World Series. Name them.

OH NO! NOT ANOTHER DUKE PREDICTION In a city that has several million doors and storefronts, 34 Carmine Street in New York's Greenwich Village stands out. It's a bookstore -- but not just any bookstore. This place is called "Unoppressive, Non-imperialist Bargain Books." Once inside, after the radical-looking clerk tacitly denies the opportunity to oppress you, you're met with an impressive bunch of books. In one corner, there are more Bob Dylan biographies or studies of the man than you ever thought possible. That's because Dylan -- be it Dylan Thomas or Bob himself -- is to the Village as Mickey Mouse is to Disneyland. Everyone thinks they like him, or knows that they should like him, but many aren't so sure. Anyway, it's on one of those shelves where the title of big book grabs your attention: "Oh No! Not Another Book About Bob Dylan!" Every time the Yankees make the postseason, or every time Duke is the preseason No. 1 ranked team in the coaches poll, I am reminded of that book. The Yankees

And while Duke lands atop the preseason poll, the band gets back together for another tour. North Carolina, Kansas and Kentucky are never far behind Duke on the main stage. The poll does little else than remind Duke that they forever have a target on their back, and the rest of the league's teams all rally around that familiar song: "Beat Duke." In the first few weeks of the season, faced with tough challenges in the ACC, the Blue Devils usually do get knocked off the top perch, only to reappear as the odds-on favorite to win the NCAA tournament in March. I don't know about you, but I always play three brackets -- one picks my alma mater, another picks who I think will win (thus dooming that team to never win) and the third one picks Duke. That's not just practical sense and experience talking, it's sound investment advice. If I had invested heavily in Duke, North Carolina and Kansas for the past 20 years, it would have far outpaced the growth of my 401(k) (and likely a lot of yours, too). Following behind Duke in the poll this year is Michigan State (great coach), Kansas (great players), Kentucky (great freshman about to be in the NBA next season) and Arizona (great logo). It's the same old song, and if you have any question that any one of those teams can or cannot win it all this year, well, don't think twice, it's all right. 3. When was the last time before 2016 that the Atlantic Coast Conference had six ranked football teams in The Associated Press weekly poll? 4. In 2016, Anthony Davis set a New Orleans Pelicans record for most points in a game (59). Who had held the team mark? 5. The 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Finals featured two American-born head coaches. Name them. 6. In 2017, FC Dallas' Roland Lamah recorded the second-fastest hat trick from kickoff (31 minutes) in Major League Soccer history. Who has the fastest? 7. Thoroughbred trainer Todd Pletcher has seen his horses win five Triple Crown races. What is the only Triple Crown race in which he has not had a victory?

Answers 1. Don Schwall had a 10-0 start at Fenway Park in 1961. 2. Mickey Mantle (52 home runs for the New York Yankees) versus Duke Snider (43 home runs for Brooklyn). 3. It was 2006. 4. Jamal Mashburn had 50 points in a game in 2003. 5. Peter Laviolette (Nashville Predators) and Mike Sullivan (Pittsburgh Penguins). 6. Bradley Wright-Phillips (New York Red Bulls), inside of 27 minutes. 7. The Preakness.

are supposed to win every year, as Hal Steinbrenner and all Yankee fans remind us ad nauseum. But sometimes I think the coaches are just too afraid not to pick Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devils for fear of some cosmic retribution.

accidentally escaped the house. That's a fact I can never, ever change. Please don't think like I did. Protect your family and get all of their vaccinations. -- Dee in Palmyra, New York DEAR DEE: Thank you for sharing such a painful experience. I hope your story will help others realize just how much they have to lose by not vaccinating their indoor cats against feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, rabies and other diseases.

DON'T RISK PETS' LIVES: VACCINATE DEAR PAW'S CORNER: The letter from a reader wondering if it's worth it to vaccinate his indoor cats ("Do Indoor Cats Need All Those Shots?") hit a nerve with me. Years ago, I had five totally indoor kitties. And like his cats, mine loved to perch on the windowsill. I'd never bothered to keep up with all of their shots, because they never went outside and so wouldn't be exposed to other cats -- so why deal with the expense? You can guess what happened: The window screen popped out somehow, and my cat "Woody" fell out into our side yard. Once we discovered the "escape," we got him back into the house, but sadly, it was not fast enough. As time went by I noticed all of my cats were showing signs of illness, so I made an appointment with the veterinarian. Sadly, Woody never made it; he passed away the day before the appointment. All of my surviving cats were diagnosed with feline leukemia. Because of my insistence on being cheap, I shortened all of my cats' lives. If they had been vaccinated regularly, they likely would never have gotten sick even if they

RAMBUNCTIOUS PUPPY IS OUT OF CONTROL

Once you've let him run in an open space for several minutes and he's spent that initial burst of energy, call Curtis to you. Use a firm, confident voice. Don't plead. Don't get angry. Don't change your tone of voice. He may not respond right away; just call again. When he does come, give him praise (and a little treat). Do this every day until he responds each time you call. In fact, he may eventually spend less time romping around and come to hang out with you, the nice lady with the treats. Once he obeys this first command, begin teaching him "sit" and "stay." There are plenty of websites with instructions on all three commands -- some off leash, some on -such as Nylabone's training tips. Try out different methods, and go with what works best for Curtis and you. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I recently adopted a whippy little mutt who has a ton of energy. "Curtis" will zoom around the house at light speed, sometimes running into furniture and knocking things over. He will not listen to me at all. How can I get him to obey and to calm down? -- Exhausted "Puppy Mom" in Denver DEAR PUPPY MOM: It sounds like Curtis needs more exercise time, preferably outdoors with plenty of space to zoom around. If you have a backyard with a fence, that's a great place to let him run -- supervised, of course. If you don't have a yard, scout out a fenced-in area where you can take him regularly -- but not a dog park, not yet. Curtis first needs to learn to come when you call. He needs to learn how to sit and stay. These three basic commands are the foundation of a dog's training.

754 224 2985 or 754 367 4174 Jeep memorabilia was plentiful, but a lot was not saved. There are old stuffed or wooden dolls, figurines, plaster carnival statues, toys, games and textiles. In 2012, a new Popeye comic included Eugene, and new Jeep collectibles were made. An old 13-inch-tall composition and wooden doll made by Cameo Doll Co. was recently sold. He has a label on his chest that reads "Jeep, (c) King Features Syn, 1935." A fan spent $1,044 to take Jeep home. An 8-inch version of the doll in the same auction sold for only $297.

WHAT'S A JEEP? What's a "jeep"? To a car collector or soldier, it is a special kind of vehicle that can travel over all sorts of rough terrain. But to a comic collector, it's a bright-yellow animal that looks a little like a dog walking on its two hind legs. It has a large red nose, tiny ears and is magical. Eugene the Jeep first appeared in 1936 in the comic strip "Thimble Theater," along with Popeye and Olive Oyl. Eugene the Jeep wanted to help humans and always told the truth, although the only word he said was "jeep." There were other characteristics, too. Eugene ate orchids only, could predict the future, could teleport himself and walk through walls. Jeep was so popular that he was included as Popeye's pet on and off in animated cartoons, comic strips and animated television shows from the 1930s and 1940s to 1987.

*** Q: When I was growing up, my grandmother had a strange lamp in the breakfast room. It looked like an 8-inch high cylinder that had a light bulb inside. The heat of the light made hot air that turned the paper or plastic cylinder. There was a picture of Niagara Falls on the side, and as the shade turned, it made it look like the water was flowing over the falls. I want to get a similar lamp for my son, but I don't know where or what to call it.

A: Your grandmother had a "motion lamp," probably made by the Scene-in-Action Company of Chicago. It made the lamps from 1925 to 1936. They were the first, but several other companies made similar "moving" lamps. They were interesting, but gave very little light. Ten years ago, the lamps sold for about $200 to $250, but today they're worth only about half that much.

This Jeep doll went for over $1,000 in a Hakes.com auction. He is a character in a Popeye comic strip from the 1930s and after. Many World War II soldiers think the vehicle called a Jeep was named for him, because with his magic powers, he could travel the most treacherous terrain.

Avocado: While avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fat, even healthy fat is a dense source of energy, so it's important to eat them in moderation. Avocados also contain vitamin E, fiber, potassium, folate and vitamin C. They can be used on sandwiches or salads, or made into guacamole. Spinach: Dark-green veggies contain lots of nutrients that a healthy body needs. Spinach is packed with vitamin A, vitamin K, iron, folate, magnesium, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, fiber and vitamin E. Spinach also has antioxidants and anti-cancer agents. Frozen or fresh spinach can be added to just about any meal. Try using it on pizza or lasagna, or use it instead of lettuce in a salad.

COOK UP A FALL FEAST! It's important to include fruits and vegetables in your diet year-round to stay healthy and to ward off diseases, but serving fresh vegetables can be a bit challenging during the winter months. If you enjoy eating seasonally, there are still a good variety of delicious, flavorful vegetables available. Here are some of the superstar fruits and vegetables of the fall and winter months. Sweet Potatoes: They have more nutrients than regular white potatoes and can replace white potatoes in some recipes. Sweet potatoes are loaded with beta-carotene (which the body makes into vitamin A), vitamin C, potassium, fiber, iron and vitamin B-6. Try them mashed, baked or as a dessert.

Pears: This fruit is a good source of fiber, antioxidants and vitamin C. Research suggests that regularly eating pears and other fruits may guard against macular degeneration. Pears seldom cause allergies and usually are safe for infants and small children. Green Beans: They are high in vitamin K, which protects red blood cells and helps reduce the severity of asthma, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. They also contain vitamin C, potassium, folate, iron and magnesium. Green beans can be served as a side dish or used in salads, soups or casseroles. This recipe for Sweet Potato, Apple, Broccoli and Green Bean Bake uses these superstar fall vegetables in an interesting and delicious new way!

AUTUMN'S BOUNTY BAKE 1 large sweet potato, cut into 1/4 inch small cubes (1 1/4 cups) 4 large Granny Smith apples, cut into 1/4 inch small cubes

Apples: A traditional fall favorite, apples are easy to find in the supermarket, or you can pick your own at a nearby orchard. They're a quick, easy snack that can be paired with peanut butter or cheese for protein. Apples contain antioxidants, which may help protect against certain cancers and reduce levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Apples have vitamin C, vitamin K and fiber. Remember the old saying: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

3-4 cups broccoli florets 2 cups green beans, trimmed 1 small red onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced

Broccoli: This is one vegetable that can be eaten raw or cooked, hot or cold, by itself or with other foods. Broccoli can help prevent cancer and heart disease, while boosting the immune system. Nutrients in broccoli include vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B-6, iron, calcium, magnesium and vitamin E.

1/4 cup raisins or cranberries

Pumpkin: It's is a great source of potassium and beta carotene, a powerful antioxidant that is good for the eyes. Canned or prepared fresh, pumpkin can be made into a variety of soups, baked goods and desserts.

2 tablespoons dried Italian or poultry seasoning

3 tablespoons chopped walnuts, pine nuts, pecans or nuts of choice, optional 1/3 cup olive oil

1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Kiwi: This fruit can be eaten alone (after peeling) or can be added to many different dishes, including soups, salads and desserts. Kiwi contains antioxidants, which can help protect the eyes, heart and colon, plus vitamin C, fiber, potassium, magnesium and vitamin E.

1/4 teaspoon sugar 1. Heat oven to 375 F. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.

2. On the pan, combine the sweet potato, apples, broccoli, green beans, onion, garlic, raisins or cranberries, and walnuts. Drizzle with the oil, dried seasoning, salt, pepper and sugar; toss to coat. Spread the ingredients into one even layer on the pan. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes. 3. Remove pan from the oven, and remove the foil. Using a spatula, turn the ingredients over to brown on top, and place them, uncovered, back into the oven. Bake for another 5 minutes, as needed or until the sweet potatoes are soft. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. ANSWER: I've read many opinions about this subject, and I tend to agree with the ones that show that apples are high in both sugar (some newer varieties much more so than old ones) and acid, which can damage teeth. Apples do have some ability to remove some particles from the teeth, but they will not clean all surfaces of the teeth. So, I would not skip brushing after an apple, even though apples are much better for your teeth than sticky sweets. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: What is an exophytic cyst? I have one on my right kidney, and it has been watched closely for the past eight years. The most recent ultrasound shows that it is 2.1 cm and hasn't changed in that time. I am 78 and in good health, except for asbestos exposure. Should I get this thing removed, or let it be? I get conflicting advice. -- B.W. ANSWER: The word "exophytic" means "growing outward," and a cyst is a fluid-filled cavity. So an exophytic cyst bulges out of the kidney and is filled with fluid. The big concern with these is whether they can be cancerous. A simple cyst, with thin walls and fluid without any solid structures, has a very low likelihood of being cancer and does not need further evaluation. If the sonogram can't show that for certain, then a CT scan is usually done. Kidney cysts are graded according to the Bosniak category, based on their appearance by CT scan. The more

with a filament (to test light touch sensation) and a tuning fork (to test vibration), but occasionally an electrodiagnostic test (i.e., EMG) is necessary. If your regular or diabetes doctor hasn't helped, I suggest a neurologist.

Despite those risk factors, if this were a simple cyst (Bosniak I or II) and unchanged in eight years, it is very unlikely to be cancer, and I would recommend letting it be. However, if it were a Bosniak category III or higher, I would discuss biopsy with the urologist.

Blood sugar levels that are persistently high are more likely to result in diabetic neuropathy, but longstanding diabetes, even when it's moderately well-controlled, can lead to neuropathy.

MEDICAL STUDENTS LACK PROPER NUTRITION EDUCATION POOR DIET LINKED TO MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS RELAPSE IN CHILDREN Fatty diets increase the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS) relapses in children, according to a study published online in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, & Psychiatry. Researchers tracked dietary intake data and assessed relapse rates for 219 participants with pediatric relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) at 11 MS centers across the United States. Higher fat intake increased the risk for relapse by 56 percent while every 10 percent increase in saturated fat intake tripled the risk of relapse. Vegetable intake showed a protective effect, with a 50 percent decreased risk for every one cup of vegetables consumed. Saturated fat, notably from animal sources, often increases calorie intake and promotes inflammation linked to MS relapse. The authors suggest dietary interventions promote vegetable intake to decrease inflammation and promote healthy gut microbiota associated with lower relapse rates.

CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE TRENDS INCREASE AMONG YOUNG GENERATIONS Cardiovascular disease trends pose significant health risks to those 18-45 years old, according to a review published online in Nature Reviews Cardiology. The authors assessed risk factors associated with heart disease, such as heart failure, arterial fibrillation, and mortality, among this age group across the globe. Heart disease rates rose over the last two decades despite a decline among older generations, mainly due to increased obesity rates, lack of physical activity, and other lifestyle factors linked to heart disease. The authors found strong links between unhealthful diets, including consumption of processed meats, and increased risk for stroke, high cholesterol, and cardiometabolic

Most medical students receive inadequate nutrition education, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association. Researchers surveyed and quizzed 257 osteopathic medical students, reviewed their knowledge of basic nutrition education, and assessed their attitudes toward applying their nutrition knowledge in a clinical setting. While the majority of participants felt comfortable with their abilities to treat patients with nutrition education, results showed more than 50 percent did not pass the nutrition quiz.Less than 12 percent of those surveyed knew current dietary reference intakes, a key marker for assessing patients’ nutrient needs. The authors call for more robust assessments of nutrition awareness and adherence to nutrition education requirements. UNUSUAL PLANTS:

VIOLETS

•African violets, the world’s most popular houseplant, aren’t really violets at all. They belong to the same family as the primrose, and are native to Tanzania’s tropical rainforests. The scientific name of African violets is Saintpaulia, named after Baron Walter von Saint Paul, the man who discovered the plant in 1892. While real violets prefer shady and cool areas, African violets do best in bright sunlight and should be placed in a sunny window. They also grow best in a humid environment, and should have a humidifier or bowl of water nearby to boost humidity. The leaves are covered with tiny hairs, which help the plant absorb water from the air. African violets are a great houseplant for pet owners, because they are completely non-toxic.

There are nearly 600 species of violets found in dozens of countries across the globe, including North America, home to about 60 species. This week, Tidbits picks a bouquet of facts about these delicate little flowers. •The genus Viola includes the popular dog-tooth violets as well as delicate pansies. While many varieties have a sweet scent used in perfumes, lotions, and oils, others are completely odorless. •Violet flowers are edible and are often candied or crystallized for use in jellies or as decorations. A Sweet Violet blossom is preserved by coating it in egg white and dipping in crystallized sugar. A hot sugar syrup can also be poured over the fresh flower until the sugar dries and re-crystallizes. The French manufacture a violet syrup from the flower’s extracts and use it to make marshmallows. •Not only are violets beautiful, they’re also nutritious. Petals and stems of violets are rich in the antioxidant Vitamin C, and in fact, contain more Vitamin C than most other vegetables •The viola plant’s medicinal qualities have been studied in several human studies, and evidence indicates that it improves cough suppression in children suffering from asthma. Another study showed the extract’s oil to be effective in treating insomnia. The oil also has been proven beneficial as an ingredient in laxatives. •Violets have been cultivated for centuries, clear back to ancient Greece in 500 BC. The Greeks regarded the violet as a symbol of fertility and love, using them in love potions. Violets were also used in their wines and food, as well as for medicinal purposes. A garland

of violets worn on the head was said to help prevent headaches and vertigo. The flower was so popular that it became the symbol of Athens. •French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte loved violets so much that he adopted them as his “signature flower.” When his wife Josephine died in 1814, Napoleon covered her grave with violet blossoms. After he was exiled to Elba in 1814, he told friends that he would return before the violets bloomed, leading his followers to call him Corporal Violet. His supporters used violets to test loyalty. When people were asked if they liked violets and they responded, “Eh, bien,” their loyalty to Napoleon was proven. •The common blue violet is also a favorite of the people in Wisconsin, Rhode Island, Illinois, and New Jer-
