• Strauss used his stock of brown cotton tent canvas to produce plain trousers, with no belt loops or back pockets, just a cinch belt in the back to hold them up. The pants were sewn in San Francisco, in a combination of factory and home sewing production. The overalls proved to hold up against the rough life of miners, farmers, and cattlemen, and Strauss’ business thrived.

• In 1846, 18-year-old Loeb Strauss left his native Bavaria, Germany to join his older brothers in New York, where they operated a dry goods store. Four years later, with the California gold rush in full swing, Loeb, now Levi, moved to San Francisco to start up his own business, supplying the miners with durable clothing.

• The word “jeans” has become synonymous with “Levi’s,” but Levi Strauss wasn’t the first to market these pants. Jean fabric can be traced back to Genoa, Italy and Nimes, Frances. Clear back in the 17th century, a sturdy fabric partly composed of wool was called “serge de Nimes,” which accounts for our term “denim.” Another linen/wool blend was popular in Genoa, which may be the reason for the word “jeans,” since “Genes” is the French word for Genoa. Both were generally used for work clothes and overalls. Genoese sailors also used jean fabric as a cover to protect merchandise on the docks from damp weather, as well as for their work pants. The fabric was dyed blue with indigo harvested from plantations in India.

BLUE JEANS (continued):
• In 1872, Strauss received a letter from one of his customers, a Nevada tailor named Jacob Davis. Davis wrote of the method he used to make trousers stronger by using metal rivets at the points of strain, such as pocket corners and the base of the fly. Davis wanted to obtain a patent for the process, but needed a business partner to finance his idea. He sought out Strauss as a partner, Strauss agreed, and in 1873, the pair were awarded Patent #139,121 for their riveted pants. • Manufacturing began on the copper-riveted “waist overalls,â€? the name given to the trousers. The brown cotton canvas pants were continued, and Strauss added denim, having it dyed an indigo blue, obtaining his fabric from Manchester, New Hampshire’s Amoskeag Mill. • During the 1880’s, additions to the overalls included their trademark orange stitching, the little front “watch pocket,â€? and a leather patch with an illustration of two horses sewn on the back waistband. Because the patent on riveted clothing was due to run out in 1890 (after which any company could manufacture them), Strauss wanted a memorable trademark on his product that would distinguish his from others. The leather patch accomplished this, and his original jeans were often called the “Two Horseâ€? brand until the word “Levi’sâ€? was registered as a trademark in 1928.
pany. By November of that year, a new factory had opened. In 1911, the company phased out the cotton duck canvas overalls entirely, offering only the blue denim variety. • Belt loops weren’t added until 1922; however, the suspender buttons were left on, along with the cinch on the back of the waist. That little red tab on the right back pocket was first used in 1936, a folded red ribbon with the word “Levi’sâ€? stitched in white, and sewn into the seam of the 501’s pocket. Zippers were used for the first time in Levi’s in 1954. Clear until 1960, the Strauss Company continued to call the 501’s “waist overallsâ€? rather than “jeans.â€? • Levi’s 501’s gained in popularity when actor John Wayne wore them in the 1939 western film “Stagecoach.â€?
• The weight of the denim in the original riveted, button-fly pants was called 01-weight. When lot numbers were assigned to the various products, these pants became known as 501’s, the name still in use today. The less-expensive version were known as 201’s.
• In 1946, another brand of jeans specifically for cowboys and rodeo wear came on the scene. Wrangler tailors designed their jeans for in-saddle comfort, and with rivets placed so as not to scratch the saddle. Their ad campaigns featured pictures of rodeo legends and cowboys in the saddle.
• The early 1900’s brought changes to the jeans industry. Strauss added two back pockets to his overalls in 1901. In 1902, Levi Strauss died at the age of 73, and bequeathed his company to his nephews. (Strauss’ descendants still run the company today.) The April, 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire completely destroyed the headquarters and factories of the com-
• During the 1950’s, wearing jeans became a symbol of teen rebellion, with film stars such as James Dean popularizing them in the 1955 film “Rebel Without a Causeâ€? and Marlon Brando wearing them in 1953’s “The Wild One.â€? Some theaters, restaurants, and schools even banned the wearing of jeans. In 1951, crooner Bing Crosby, who loved his Levi’s, wore
them on a hunting trip to Canada, and was refused a room at a Vancouver hotel, since they were considered low-class. The Strauss Company responded by custom-tailoring a denim tuxedo for the singer. As the years wore on, jeans became more acceptable, and became the norm for casual wear. • The 1960s brought bell-bottom jeans, Strauss’ first pre-shrunk jeans, and the very first television commercial for Levi’s jeans. • Designer jeans were launched in the 1970s, with Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt, Ralph Lauren, and Jordache leading the pack. Distressed jeans came into high demand in the 1980s, with worn, faded, and “stone-washâ€? jeans commanding up to $200 a pair. Various chemicals, special dyeing methods, sandblasting, and adding pumice stone to the washing process produces the worn, vintage look. Stains, tears, and repairs add to the appeal of distressed jeans. • Hundreds of songs have been written about blue jeans over the years, including “Angel in Blue Jeans,â€? “Devil in Blue Jeans,â€? “Forever in Blue Jeans,â€? and “Venus in Blue Jeans.â€? • In 1993, the Strauss company sponsored a contest to find the oldest pair of Levi’s in America. Named the “Send Them Home Search,â€? the challenge generated a winning pair dating to the late 1920s. • The average American owns seven pairs of jeans.

UNUSUAL PLANTS:
INDIGO What makes our blue jeans blue? Follow along as Tidbits investigates the indigo plant and the blue dye obtained from it. • The indigo plant is a member of the legume family, with more than 300 species identified. Just two of these 300+ are used in the production of indigo dye. The plants, anywhere from 2 feet to 6 feet (0.6 to 1.83 m) tall, have a single woody stem, with oval dark-green leaves and clusters of red flowers resembling butterflies. The dye comes from fermentation of the leaves. • Use of indigo dye dates back to ancient times, with Egyptian mummies from 2400 B.C. found wrapped in linen with deep blue stripes. A cuneiform clay tablet from 600 B.C. containing a recipe for dyeing wool was found in Mesopotamia. Explorer Marco Polo brought word of indigo back to Europe after his late 13th-century travels. It was about that time, in 1289, that the first known recorded use of the word indigo as a color in the English language was made. • The plant gets its name from the Greek word “indikon” and the Roman term “indicum,” both of which translate “a product of India,” where at least 50 different species of indigo are grown. • The process of extracting the dye from the plant leaves and converting to indigo has been the same for thousands of years. Tanks are arranged in a step-like layout. Freshly-cut plant leaves are placed in to
top-most tank and an enzyme is added to break down and ferment the leaves. Fourteen hours later, the resulting liquid is drained into the next tank and stirred with large paddles to mix it with air. • The dye settles to the bottom of the tank, while the liquid is drained off. The remaining dye is heated to stop further fermentation, then filtered, and dried to a thick paste that can be formed into cakes. • In ancient times, indigo was considered a luxury item and was so valuable, the cakes were used as currency. • As demand for indigo increased throughout Europe in the 1600s, the supplies in India were not enough, and the plant was cultivated in the New World, with Spanish explorers bringing indigo to Central America (particularly El Salvador and Honduras), Jamaica, and the Virgin Islands. • It takes a lot of leaves to produce a small amount of dye, but not a lot of dye to color jeans, only a few grams for each pair. • When Levi Strauss’ denim jeans became popular, indigo production could not keep up with the demand. Chemists set to work researching a synthetic method to produce the dye. In 1883, a German chemist named Adolf von Baeyer developed a process to produce indigo, leading to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery.

HOLLYWOOD — J.K. Simmons is the busiest supporting actor in Hollywood. At 62, he's made 80 films and starred in four TV series: "Oz" (1997-2003), "Law & Order" (1997-2010), "The Closer" (2005-2012) and his own NBC series, "Growing Up Fisher" (2014), playing a blind man. He's also the TV spokesman for Farmers Insurance. Then along came "Whiplash," for which he won the best-supporting actor Oscar. Now, in addition to Farmers Insurance commercials and the current releases of "La La Land" and "Patriot's Day," Simmons has seven films awaiting release in 2017: "Renegades," with Sullivan Stapleton (of "Blindspot") and Charlie Bewley (vampire Demetri in "The Twilight" saga), out Feb. 3; "All Nighter" (top billed), with Emile Hirsch, opening March 17; "The Snowman," with Michael Fassbender, out Oct. 13; "The Justice League," coming Nov. 17; and "The Bachelors" (top-billed), as well as "Bastards," with Owen Wilson and Glenn Close; and "I'm Not Here" (top-billed), with Sebastian Stan ("Captain America") and Mandy Moore. Simmons has been married for 20 years to Michelle Schumacher and has two children. *** Debbie Reynolds (who died Dec. 28) was one of the last stars of The Golden Age of MGM musicals. "That's Entertainment" (1974) and the sequels "2" (1976) and "3" (1994) paid tribute to the glorious musicals of MGM. I knew her very well, and she was a handful, always wanting to run the show, but worth the trouble because she knew her stuff. Debbie was only 19 when she starred with Gene Kelly and Donald O'Conner in the 1952 classic "Singin' in the Rain." Some of her other great films were: "The Tender Trap" (1955), with Frank Sinatra; "Tammy and the Bach-
Q: I am so taken with the new series "This Is Us." It's such a wonderful ensemble piece; I care about the lives of every single character! Do you know yet if it has been renewed for another season? — Layla C., via email A: NBC's freshman family dramedy has indeed been renewed for a second season. And I can do you one better: NBC has so much faith in its new series — judging by fan response, it's with good reason — that the network has gone ahead and renewed it for a third season as well. This is almost unprecedented, usually it's the long-established series that get multiple-season renewals, not new series. That really says something about the network's confidence in "This Is Us." *** Q: Is it true that "Charmed" is being revived? — Valerie F., via Twitter A: The CW recently confirmed rumors that it is developing a revival of the network's popular supernatural series, which aired from 1998-2006. The catch with the reimagining of the series is that it will be set BEFORE the original one — 1976, to be exact. The new version will be written byКJessica O'Toole, Amy Rardin and Jennie Snyder, who all work on the CW's "Jane the Virgin." Since they are in the very early stages of development, no characters, storyline or cast has been announced yet, but I'll keep you posted. *** Q: The surrealness of the current presidential election got me to thinking about my favorite fictional president: Frank Underwood. elor" (1957); "The Rat Race" (1960), with Tony Curtis; and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," which earned her a best-actress Oscar nomination. "The Singing Nun" (1966) and "In and Out" (1997), with Tom Selleck, were two of her best later films. Her last film was playing Liberace's mother with Michael Douglas in HBO's "Behind the Candelabra." The last remaining MGM musical film stars are Arlene Dahl (92), "Three Little Words" (1950); Angela Lansbury (91), "The Harvey Girls" and "Till the Clouds Roll By" (both in 1946); Ann Blyth (88), "Kismet" (1955); Jane Powell (87), "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" (1954); Leslie Caron (86), "Lili" (1953) and "Gigi" (1958); and Margaret O'Brien (80), "Meet Me in St. Louis" (1944). When I ran alongside Debbie's vintage convertible down Fifth Avenue enroute to the New York premiere of "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," I was touched when she said, "Take a rest, come sit with me in the car." When I told her I couldn't shoot her from there, she chided, "That's what I had in mind, the flashes are blinding me!" (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
Robin Wright Netflix
A: Season five of the high-stakes political drama will drop May 30 on Netflix. As with every season, all episodes will be available at once, but try to pace yourself. If you're like me, you'll watch them all in one weekend and then be sad that you have to wait another whole year to see what Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright and the rest of the gang have up their sleeves. Also returning are Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Neve Campbell, Derek Cecil, Paul Sparks and Joel Kinnaman. I'm really looking forward to this season. With the tagline: "We make the terror," and with Frank and Claire running as president and vice president, respectively, it's just opened up a whole new world of dastardly deeds done under the guise of patriotism. *** Q: I believe the true-crime movie that is going to air on ID is called "Fatal Vision," not "Final Vision," as you stated in a previous column.К"Fatal Vision" is the title of the book that Joe McGinniss wrote concerning the Jeffrey MacDonald case.КDon't know where you got "Final" from, but it is incorrect. — Janice A., via email A: Oops, Janice, you caught me being human! Yes, you are correct in that the movie is called "Fatal Vision." I apologize for my slip of the finger. * It was American philosopher George Santayana who made the following sage observation: "Language is like money, without which specific relative values may well exist and be felt, but cannot be reduced to a common denominator." * If you're like me, you find it hard to resist a good book, and their abundant availability presents a problem: Good books are being published faster than they can be read. This leads to an extensive TBR (to-be-read) list, much of which is stacked on the bedside tables of readers the world over. (The introduction of ebooks has only worsened the problem; now the books stack up with no visual reminder of how many there are.) I don't have a solution, but it may help to know that the Japanese have a word to describe this behavior. "Tsundoku" means "the acquiring of reading materials followed by letting them pile up and subsequently never reading them." * Historians report that Alexander the Great — best known for his conquests throughout Asia and North Africa, which helped to create one of the ancient world's largest empires before he turned 30 — had a hard-andfast rule for his soldiers: no beards. They presented car-buyers with a variety of webpages; everything on the pages was the same — the vehicles presented, the information provided, prices, etc. — except for the background. One group got a green background with a pattern of pennies on it, and one group got a red background with a pattern of flames. As it turns out, the background did, indeed, influence behavior: Consumers in the green-background group spent more time looking at information about cost, while those in the red-background group spent more time looking at details about safety features.

DEAR DR. ROACH: You have written about screening for breast cancer, but are there any ways to prevent breast cancer in the first place? — T.C. ANSWER: There are three behaviors that are well-accepted to reduce the risk of breast cancer. Breastfeeding is one, and it's so good for the baby that we might forget that it has long-term advantages for moms, but add reducing the mother's breast cancer risk to the list. The second is dietary phytoestrogens, compounds such as soy isoflavones and lignans, which are found in soybeans and other legumes. This data is most clear among Asian women. Finally, regular physical exercise reduces breast cancer risk, especially for women after menopause. Other dietary factors, such as a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in meat and saturated fat, may reduce risk of breast cancer, but this isn't proven. Studies are ongoing to examine whether vitamin D or omega 3 fatty acids may reduce risk, as suggested in previous studies. For high-risk women, consider chemoprophylaxis with a SERM or aromatase inhibitor, and also a more-intensive screening program. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I went to my ENT doctor in January complaining of muffled hearing and a loud, highpitched noise in my left ear. He gave me a hearing test, and it showed 50 percent loss. I had an MRI and was told that I have an acoustic neuroma on my left side. This has caused me to go 50 percent deaf in my ear. The ENT doctor wants me to wait six months and see if it grows more, which I don't want to do because I feel it should be taken out while it is small. The choices I have are to watch and wait; to have traditional surgery; or to have surgery with gamma knife or cyber knife. I would really like to just get this done

and have it taken out before it causes more problems, like affecting my facial nerve, balance nerve or if it gets too close to my brain stem. I also am worried that I may go completely deaf. I am getting a second opinion next month from a neurosurgeon. What are your thoughts on all of this? — B.D. ANSWER: An acoustic neuroma, also called a vestibular schwannoma, is a type of non-cancerous tumor on the eighth cranial nerve, which is responsible for hearing and balance. These tumors usually are treated, although some authorities recommend a watch-and-wait approach if they aren't bothering the patient, if the patient is a poor candidate for surgery or if the patient is otherwise reluctant. None of these seems to apply to you, so I would recommend proceeding with the second opinion, the neurosurgeon, whom I think is likely to recommend treatment. Progressive hearing loss is a clear indication that treatment likely would be beneficial sooner rather than later. All the treatments you mentioned are reasonable. Cyber knife and gamma knife are ways of delivering radiation to the tumor. Since any of these can achieve the goal of preventing the tumor's growth and any worsening of symptoms, the choice should be left to the expert. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I know you're not a psychiatrist, but I hope you can help. My dad was a single parent raising us kids, and he was always clean when it came to housework. Every room in our house was almost spotless. But lately, we have noticed him becoming a hoarder and being more disorganized. By that, I mean keeping weeks-old newspapers on the floor, the kitchen table, everywhere, and he gets upset if we try to help him clean. He's 79. Could it be a sign of senility or Alzheimer's disease? — R.S. ANSWER: Hoarding behavior can have several psychiatric causes, and, indeed, a psychiatrist may be necessary to make the diagnosis. However, odds are that your dad always had some form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and with age has become worse. There are other possibilities. Fronto-temporal dementia, a type of dementia that is distinct from Alzheimer's disease, has a variant in which personality and behavior changes are prominent, but given the history of what sounds like unusual cleanliness habits, I would suspect that OCD is the most likely diagnosis. There usually is a
long delay from the time symptoms begin until the time the diagnosis is made. A diagnosis needs to be made before treatment — be it medications, psychotherapy or some combination — can begin. Treatment can improve not only the hoarding behavior, but also the distress your dad is feeling. A psychiatrist or psychologist is the expert in making the diagnosis and for treatment. The new booklet on Alzheimer's disease gives a detailed presentation of this common illness. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 903W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In discussing treatment of nail fungus, you did not mention newer laser treatments that I see advertised by podiatrists in my area. Are they effective? — J.F. ANSWER: We don't really know if they are effective, since well-done studies haven't yet proven it; however, preliminary evidence is suggestive. This would be a great addition to treatment, since the only currently accepted highly effective treatments are oral medications, which have risk of liver damage. Even more exciting is the idea of combining a topical antifungal agent, amorolfine, with laser. This medication is not available in the U.S., but a study in Korea showed a 50 percent effectiveness rate (which is pretty good for this difficult-to-treat condition). Since I last wrote about this condition, I heard from a lot of readers. Some mentioned cures from Vicks Vapo-Rub, but the only study I found on that showed a 22 percent cure rate. One person asked about surgery, but since the fungus gets into the nail bed, the infection often recurs after removing the nail. Listerine and white vinegar mixed half and half cured one couple, and several people had success with Dr. Paul's Piggy Paste, which also is vinegar-based. None of these has good data to support its use, but all likely are safe. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. world, have a beautiful kid and live in a house that has it's own ZIP code ... but you're absolutely right. It wasn't until Antonio Brown posted a video on Facebook when we all decided as a team that, hey, no ... we gotta take this game seriously!" In the "you can't make this up" department, Bill Belichick's real-life remarks about the incident were even better than anything myself or fictional Suzy Kolber could ever conjure.
Truly, I don't believe that so-called bulletin board material matters much anymore. To wit, let's take the recent nonsense between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots. Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin was recorded by his best player, Antonio Brown, calling the Patriots a name that refers to a human orifice. And we all know what orifice that is because we never refer to any orifice as an orifice except for this particular orifice. Now, the question is, does anybody outside of the Steelers organization care? Is this going to make a difference in their upcoming game? Will we see Erin Andrews or Suzy Kolber shoving a microphone in Tom Brady's face after a blowout win, asking how those comments factored into the day's results? Can you imagine? "Well, Erin/Suzy," Brady might start, "we were planning on coming out flat ... no pun, of course." Brady, who over the years has developed into a very well-spoken league player, would be able to handle this with aplomb. We can imagine the further discourse. "We've only won our division for pretty much the entire century so far ... have won a fair amount in the postseason, quite a few Super Bowls, too ... have a genius for a coach. I'm married to one of the hottest women in the
Perhaps the best take in all of this was Mike Tomlin's reaction. Tomlin is a true American treasure. He's a biology major from William & Mary who never played a down of professional football but holds the record for youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl. He's an incredible judge of talent and will be a part of this league for a very long time. The man deserved better than being outed by Antonio Brown. Sure, Brown's a superstar, but he clearly isn't in any danger of becoming a rocket scientist anytime soon. As Tomlin was quick to point out, players who act that way, who feel bigger than the team, have a habit of becoming journeymen, a history of being quick has-beens. He keeps it up and we may only be a season or two away from seeing him lifting weights in his driveway, begging for a contract, wishing he was in a locker room ... never mind being posted on the bulletin board. In the final analysis, it's even easier to understand. Nothing Brown said made the Patriots better — it made him and the Steelers worse. Never rat out your friends (or teammates or coaches) and always keep your mouth shut. Nobody needs a bulletin board to be reminded of something like that. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

CHURCH SALE TREASURE Q: I purchased a vase at a church sale that is signed "Geo E Ohr, Biloxi, Miss." It has a glossy blue-ish glaze and a twisted design. I can't find the pottery maker in any of the reference books I have and hope you'll be able to help me. I paid $75 for it. — Roslyn, Memphis, Tennessee A: George E. Orr opened his pottery studio in Biloxi during the late 1870s. In 1884, he exhibited 600 pieces of his work and attracted a great deal of attention, due in no small part to his unusual glazes and designs. His techniques included twisting, folding and crinkling small pieces of thin-walled clay into odd and often innovative forms. In 1906, he closed his studio and stored several thousand pieces, which were re-discovered in 1972. Needless to say, his work is both rare and collectible. I contacted several experts and they seem to agree that your vase could be worth as much as $2,000, perhaps much more. Your $75 investment was a good one. *** Q: At a recent garage sale, I paid $50 for a Hopalong Cassidy box camera. My husband thinks I overpaid. What do you think? — Dorothy, North Canton, Ohio

A: According to "Hopalong Cassidy Collectibles" by Joseph J. Caro, there were two types of Hoppy cameras made, and both are extremely collectible. The camera is an all-metal Brownie that takes 120 size film, with a top strap and metal plate featuring the images of Hopalong Cassidy and his horse, Topper. The only attachment was a special flash that was sold separately. Without the original box, your camera is worth about $250. I have seen this camera sell for more at auction.

*** Q: I have a number of serving dishes in the Candlewick pattern. Tell me what you know about this glass. — Frances, Rio Rancho, New Mexico
A: Yes, I do. For example, about a year ago a woman from Texas contacted me. Her father and grandfather had been dentists, and she had inherited about 200 pair of false teeth, many from the Victorian era. She wondered what they were worth. Although I did my best to find out, I was unable to take a bite out of the question. Incidentally, she had the teeth displayed on glass shelves in her living room, and I immediately had a vision of a space occupied by Cheshire cats.
A: Candlewick glass was made by the Imperial Glass Company from 1936 until October 1982. According to "Glass A-Z" by David Shotwell and published by Krause Books, the pattern, known as Imperial's No. 400, identified the plain glassware that was molded with beading around the rims and bases or stems of most of the pieces the company produced. For values, I suggest you contact antique dealers in your area. *** Q: I have written to you three times and you never answer my request. I have a brand-new fishing reel that has never been used. It has a nice design and I have never seen anything like it. Thanks for answering or go to hell. — George, Albuquerque, New Mexico A: Because of the volume of letters and email I receive, I am not able to answer each and every question from readers. You have written me four times, not three, and in none of your letters have you told me really anything about your reel except that it has a beautiful design and was sold by Sears. Sears marketed dozens of reels, and I have no idea which one you have. Because of that lack

CAT GONE MISSING? HERE'S WHAT TO DO DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My tomcat, "Morris," slipped out the front door a couple of days ago when my visiting aunt and uncle were chatting with other relatives in the doorway. He hasn't been back yet. I searched the yard and neighborhood for him without any luck. What else can I do? My uncle keeps saying that he'll just come back on his own after he's done "doing what tomcats do." Morris is neutered, so that doesn't make sense. What do you think? — Karen T., via email DEAR KAREN: Keep searching for Morris, and don't listen to your uncle, who is parroting an old observation that dates back to when cats were generally outdoor pets or working mousers. Morris sounds like an indoor cat and could be in trouble if he's unfamiliar with the outdoors. Is he a regular escape artist, or is this his first time getting out? Here are a few things to do:
—Place a dish of cat food and water outside the door, on the chance that he is nearby and will get hungry. —Post flyers throughout the neighborhood and around town with Morris' description, and a contact number or email.
CAT HAS APPETITE FOR PLASTIC DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have a 19-month-old cat, "Sissy," who loves to chew on plastic shopping bags and whatever other plastic she may find. This started about six months ago. I feed her and her two siblings very well. Is there anything I can do to get her to stop? — Rae H., Weaverville, California DEAR RAE: Plastic shopping bags make a lovely crinkling sound when chewed, and the texture is quite interesting. While some of the cats I've cared for over the years couldn't care less about gnawing on such things, others were fascinated with crinkly plastic, crumpled paper
and similar interesting items. Now, I can't tell you exactly why a cat picks a specific material to chew on. You should certainly take Sissy to the vet for a checkup and discussion about her new behavior. Often it's not health-related. Sissy may be looking for a little more excitement in her life. The risk of chewing on plastic, of course, is that she might ingest bits of it, and that can cause significant health problems. A small bit of soft shopping-bag plastic may not seem like much, but if she's also sampling, say, the harder plastic of water bottles or milk jugs, small shards of those can be swallowed. In the short term, I recommend keeping plastic shopping bags and other tempting items out of Sissy's reach, and spend more time playing with her and scattering cat-safe toys around the house to try and redirect her attention. Repeat rinsing and draining, several times, until all sand is removed. Drain well. 2. In 6-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium-high until hot. Add leeks, celery and parsnips, and cook 10 to 12 minutes or until all vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally.

You too can have a bin like the one above at your apartment complex, government building, or business. You will help make clothing recycling easy, help the environment, reduce homelessness, and fix broken lives all without spending a penny. To make arrangements for your bin, call Jim, Community Outreach Manager at
754 224 2985 or 754 367 4174 and those tests aren't covered. Some of those tests that might be requested include prostate cancer, HIV, colorectal cancer, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, diabetes and glaucoma. Certain tests and screenings are free. Be sure to ask for the FREE Medicare Wellness visit ... not a physical. If you end up with a full physical (depending how you ask for the appointment), thinking it's a free Wellness visit, you could well be charged for various tests. On the other hand, if you do want a full head-to-toe physical, be specific because you won't get it at the Wellness visit either.
MEDICARE WELCOME VS. WELLNESS VISITS Those who are new to Medicare have to sort out a lot of information in a hurry. One area of confusion is the difference between the Welcome to Medicare doctor visit and the annual Wellness Visit. You get the Welcome visit once, in the first 12 months of your enrollment in Medicare. You get the annual Wellness visit a year later and every year after that. What to expect from your Welcome visit: Counseling, mostly. Your weight, exercise, diet, current drugs, blood pressure, possible depression, general physical condition, family medical history and more will be discussed in a 45-minute visit. They might do a basic vision test and a body mass index. A plan will be provided for screenings, shots or tests. The Wellness visit doesn't cost you anything. If you're expecting a full physical at that time, you won't get it. Your annual Wellness visit: You qualify for this appointment if you've had Part B for longer than 12 months. You'll have to fill out a health-risk questionnaire as a means for the medical staff to develop a prevention plan for you. If you have the Original Medicare, you won't pay anything for the annual exam, unless additional tests are performed at the same time
MEDICARE: NEW RULES MEAN BETTER CARE New Medicare rules that took effect at the beginning of the year will go a long way toward getting better care for seniors. As reported in the Kaiser Newsletter, Medicare finally is realizing that not all patients are the same, and not all medical problems fit neatly into a 15-minute doctor visit. Patients will receive care under some new standards, and doctors will be happier because they'll get paid for the time they actually put in. Doctors now will be paid for the time they put into the teams that work with seriously ill patients, such as those with heart failure, diabetes and hypertension. That team can include nurses, social workers and even psychiatrists, who also will be paid for working with patients who need complex chronic-care management for two or more serious conditions. Those in patient management can bill more often, and will include care such as helping a patient transition from hospital to home, coordinating home care and educating caregivers. With the extra money, doctors may even be able to hire people to serve as managers. When it comes to cognitive impairment, the diagnosis can be difficult, and sometimes is not possible in a short appointment. Now Medicare will specify what examinations are necessary, and will pay not only for the initial assessment but also the cost of creating and managing a care plan. This will be a bonus for patients, too, because Medicare will insist on 10 requirements, including a physical, a
performance assessment of daily living activities, review of current medications, caregivers' knowledge and more. An additional bonus for doctors is that they'll now be paid for their after-hours time spent talking on the phone with patients or reviewing medical records. All in all, this should result in better care for seniors.
AGE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITIES The AARP has released the latest Network of Age-Friendly Communities, and 135 places across the country have made the list. While the criteria are intended to ensure that people of all ages can easily live there, the biggest benefit is to seniors. Each community aims for improvements in outdoor spaces, transportation, housing, social participation, respect and social inclusion, work and civic engagement, communication and information, and community and health services. How it plays out varies by the community. Check the AARP website and look at the selection of slideshows to get an idea about what these communities offer. * See before-and-after photos of a remodeled house in Florida, with everything from bathroom grab bars to hard flooring for easy wheelchair movement. * Check out the Des Moines, Iowa, slideshow with the miles of walking trails and bike paths, affordable housing and seven medical centers. * Birmingham, Alabama, offers a slow-biking community ride every week on flat terrain. * Macon, Georgia, was one of the first communities to join the Age- Friendly network. It's created a 316-page document about all the things it's done and intends to do to make the whole town agefriendly. * Newport, Vermont, in an area of high unemployment, has created intergenerational community gardens, cooperatively run by schoolchildren and seniors alike.
