PLANET NAMES by Kathy Wolfe The planets in our solar system have derived their names from many varied sources, and have lent their names to several common items. This week, Tidbits presents a look at numerous uses of planet names.

• Mercury was the messenger of the gods. The son of Zeus, Mercury was the father of Pan. According to mythology, Mercury could travel with the speed of thought. He also had the responsibility of leading the souls of the dead to the underworld. Mercury was also the god of commerce and financial gain; in fact, the word “merchant” is derived from his name. During the festival of Mercuralia, merchants sprinkled their heads, goods, businesses, and belongings with water to bring good luck. • The chemical element Mercury is commonly known as quicksilver, and is used in thermometers, barometers, and fluorescent lamps. Although a useful element, it can have toxic effects, including damage to the brain, kidneys, and lungs. Mercury poisoning can bring on impaired vision and hearing, a lack of coordination, tremors, violent muscle spasms, sleep disturbances, and memory loss. Mercury was found in excavated Egyptian tombs dating back to 1500 BC.

PLANET NAMES

• Uranus, also known as Ouranos, was the god of the sky in mythology. According to Greek literature, he was called Father Sky, and was the son of Gaia, Mother Earth. Uranus was the father of Saturn, who was the father of Jupiter, who was the father of Mars.

(continued):

• The ancient Greek statue, the Venus de Milo, was discovered in 1820 by a peasant. The marble sculpture was buried in the ruins of the ancient city of Milos on the Greek island of Milos. It was found in two large pieces – the upper torso and the lower draped legs – along with a few fragments of the upper left arm and hand holding an apple. It’s thought to represent Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty. The same goddess is known as Venus to the Romans, and since it was found on the island of Milos, the statue was named accordingly. Venus de Milo stands 6 ft. 8 in. (203 cm) high and is believed to have been created around 100 BC. In 1821, the statue arrived in France and presented to Louis XVIII, who donated it to the Louvre Museum, where it is still found today. It was removed from the Louvre in 1939, as war threatened Europe, and stored temporarily in the Chateau de Valencay, a mansion in the French Loire Valley. • The Mars candy company is the nation’s sixth largest privately-held company, still entirely owned by the family of its founder, Frank C. Mars. Having learned how to hand-dip chocolate from his mother in the late 1800s, Frank and his wife started up a factory in his Tacoma, Washington kitchen in 1911. A popular type of milkshake inspired Frank’s son to invent the Milky Way bar in 1923, advertising it as a “chocolate malted milk in a candy bar.” The Snickers bar came along in 1930, and the 3 Musketeers bar followed in 1932. • In 1941, with the U.S. at war, Frank Mars anticipated a shortage of sugar and chocolate. He approached Bruce Murrie, an executive at Hershey, with an idea for a candy to be sold strictly to the military. The candy was chocolate with a candy coating, and was heat-resistant and easy-to-ship, the perfect treat for soldiers. Mars offered Murrie a 20% share in return for a steady source of chocolate, and the little candies became known as M&M’s. After the war, in 1945, M&M’s were made available to the public. It wasn’t until 1950 that the little “m” was imprinted on each candy. Peanut M&M’s debuted in 1954. More than 400 million M&M’s are produced in the U.S. every day.

• Jupiter was the chief Roman god, god of light, sky, and weather, as well as laws. His Greek equivalent was Zeus. • The Miami Marlins Class A minor league baseball team is based in Jupiter, Florida, and is known as the Jupiter Hammerheads, named for the hammerhead shark. • Neptune, the Roman god of water, is pictured as a tall, white-bearded man, carrying a three-pronged fisherman’s spear known as a trident. Because he traveled over the sea in a horse-drawn chariot, he was also believed to be in charge of the sport of horse-racing. His Greek counterpart is the god Poseidon. Neptune was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, who reigned over the heavenly realms, the earthly world, and the underworld. • Neptunalia is a festival held on July 23, paying homage to and asking for blessings of water from Neptune during summer’s drought and heat. • The Neptune Society is in the business of providing unusual burial grounds. In San Francisco, the company operates a copper-domed Neo-Classical building with more than 8,500 spots for cremation urns. A more unusual final resting place is located off the coast near Key Biscayne, Florida. The world’s largest man-made underwater reef, covering 600,000 sq. ft. (65,000 sq. m), and located 40 feet (12.2 m) below the surface has been dubbed the Atlantis Reef. Cremated remains are mixed with cement to create features of the Reef, which has a planned expansion to 16 acres, with an eventual goal of 125,000 remains. Underwater roads lead to a central area with benches and statues. Memorial plaques mark the final home of each of the deceased. • Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture, taking his name from the word satu, meaning “sowing.” He was also god of the harvest, and the Roman festival Saturnalia was celebrated at harvest. Saturday is also named after this god. • Saturn vehicles were a subsidiary of General Motors, founded as a private employee-owned company,

An 11-year-old British schoolgirl, who loved classical mythology, suggested the name Pluto. • Walt Disney presented Pluto the Pup in the 1930 Mickey Mouse film “The Chain Gang.” Although all of Disney’s main characters – Mickey, Minnie, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, Goofy, and Pluto – are all animals, the yellow-orange dog is the only one not dressed as a human.

Amazing Plants

DANDELIONS Let’s take a look at this little plant, which can be viewed as a pretty flower or a pesky weed. • Dandelions are members of the same family as asters, daisies, and sunflowers. With about 100 species known to exist, they’re found on every continent and used as food almost since the beginning of time! The name of this bright yellow flowering plant comes from the French “dent de lion,” which translates “lion’s tooth,” because of the toothed leaves of the plant. Its folk names include swine snort, bitterwort, Irish daisy, Priest’s Crown, and cankerwort. • Each of the bright yellow petals of the dandelion is actually an individual flower that will produce a fruit. When the flowers turn into the familiar puff ball, these fruits (called achenes) will be dispersed by the wind and re-seed. A seed can travel 5 miles (8 km) before it finally reaches the ground. If their habitat is disturbed, dandelions will produce more seed than usual as a defense mechanism. • The dandelion will grow up to 17 inches (43 cm) in height. If it seems like they’re tough to dig up, it’s because their roots can reach up to 15 feet (4.5 m) underground. However, the usual length is 18” (45 cm), still plenty hard enough to pull up. • The stem of the dandelion is hollow, but it produces a milky liquid that contains latex. Scientists are researching its potential as an ingredient in automobile tires. • While dandelions are considered a nuisance in our beautiful residential lawns, they are actually harvested as a crop in Belgium.

• There seems to be no end to the health benefits of the dandelion. The entire plant is edible, and is rich in Vitamins A, C, and K, as well as possessing a high level of iron, calcium, and potassium. The good news for diabetics is that dandelion juice stimulates the production of insulin in the pancreas, lowering blood sugar level. Research also indicates that dandelions can boost the immune system. • Drinking dandelion tea is good for the digestive system, since it promotes digestion and acts as a mild natural laxative. It’s also used for relief from liver and urinary disorders and jaundice. • The dandelion’s milky sap is useful for treating fungal infections, for itchiness, ringworm, and eczema. It can ease the pain of a bee sting, and has been known to eliminate warts and acne. • Dandelion can also be used as a natural fabric dye, with the flower heads producing a yellow-green color and the leaves making a purple dye. • Some folks make a tasty dandelion wine with flower petals, sugar, lemon, raisins, white grape juice, and yeast. Dandelions can also be used in the making of root beer. • Every Spring, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia hosts their annual Dandelion Festival, featuring a fishing derby, car show, and art show. A cluster of four dandelion flowers is the emblem of the community. The dandelion is also the official flower of the University of Rochester, with “The Dandelion Yellow” their official song.

HOLLYWOOD — "Feud: Bette & Joan" is the mostwatched FX show since "The People vs O.J. Simpson," which only proves people still love old movie stars. Joan Crawford wanted to work with Bette Davis since their Warner Brothers Studios days in 1945. Joan knew the two of them together would be box-office magic. But Davis' no-nonsense Broadway training was the opposite of Crawford's Hollywood hype and phony press-release practices. In 1962, Crawford scrambled to make a comeback, and she sent the book, "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane," to producer Robert Aldrich, as a vehicle for her and Bette Davis. But she didn't count on the studio deliberately fueling a fire between them to get more heat for the film. When it opened in New York City, the studio provided a tour bus for them to travel to the 26 theaters, but Crawford wouldn't ride in the bus saying, "Stars don't ride in buses!" This infuriated Davis. I wrangled my way onto the bus, and when I asked where Crawford was, everyone pointed to the back of the bus. I finally saw her, through the back window, following the bus in a limo. Bette ranted the entire time, from theater to theater!

Even though the film returned $8 million on its investment, Davis was sure she'd never work again and took out an ad in The Daily Variety: "Situation wanted, mother of three, divorced, American, 30 years' experience as an actress in motion pictures and more affable than rumor would have it. Wants steady employment in Hollywood. (Has had Broadway). Bette Davis, c/o Martin Baum, REFERENCES UPON REQUEST." We'll tell you what happened next, next time.

Q: The other night I streamed a movie called "Caged No More," which starred Kevin Sorbo. The actress who played one of the kidnapped sisters is Cassidy Gifford, and I wondered if she was any relation to Kathie Lee and Frank. What else has she been in? — Vivian F., via email A: Cassidy is indeed the daughter of Kathie Lee and the late Frank Gifford. The gorgeous and talented 23-yearold is just starting to come up in the business, having been featured in "The Suite Life on Deck," "Blue Bloods," "God's Not Dead" and "Caged No More," along with a handful of others. Next up for Cassidy is a starring role in the Hallmark Channel original movie "Like Cats and Dogs," which premieres April 15 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Cassidy plays Lara Hale, a dog lover, who through some mix-up is stuck sharing a vacation rental for the summer with Spencer, who is a cat lover. Spencer and Lara could not be more different, and they will have to figure out how to get along without killing each other. Cassidy was excited to get to star in this rom-com, telling me: "It's the story of two young people seemingly stuck in their ways and not realizing that is what is getting in their way. It's the tale of two people who are at different but similar points in their lives, and they don't realize that what they need is the opposite of what they are getting. I think we get so easily stuck in ruts of complacency and feeling comfortable that even small changes to our daily life can be great as long as we're open to them. There is a healthy, happy medium." *** Q: What does one of my favorite actors, Peter Sarsgaard, have coming up? — Dani T. in Georgia

*** "Beauty & the Beast" director Bill Condon has been signed by Warners to develop a Broadway version of "A Star Is Born," despite the fact their upcoming film version, directed by and starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, doesn't hit screens until Sept. 28, 2018. Clint Eastwood (originally set to direct the film with Beyonce) and Jon Peters (producer of the 1976 Barbra Streisand version) are onboard to help Cooper through his first directing project. *** They don't call Dwayne Johnson "The Busiest Actor in Hollywood" for nothing. He has "Baywatch" (which he also produced) set for a May 26 premiere, "Jumanji 2" (reteaming him) with Kevin Hart, as well as Jack Black and Nick Jonas, due Dec. 22. He's also producing "Rampage" (based on the video game) and "Fighting with My Family," with Vince Vaughn and Lena Headey, which will take him back to his WWE roots to play wrestling superstar Paige. Johnson started producing films so he could get a bigger piece of "The Rock." (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

A: Hulu recently announced that Peter has been cast in its original new series "The Looming Tower," a drama that traces the rising threat of Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida, taking a controversial look at how the rivalry between the CIA and FBI inadvertently might have set the stage for the tragedy of 9/11 and the war in Iraq. Peter plays Martin Schmidt, a CIA analyst who invariably believes he's by far the smartest person in the room. The series also stars Jeff Daniels, Tahar Rahim, Michael Stuhlbarg, Bill Camp, Virginia Kull, Louis Cancelmi and Sullivan Jones. *** Q: I just saw that Bryan Adams is touring to promote his new album. Will he come back around to the States? — Danni F., via email A: Right now Bryan is in South America on his Get Up tour. He'll be back in the U.S. at the end of May, starting in California and working his way around America. I'll be at the Sept. 10 show in Orlando for my early birthday present to myself. The way a reverse mortgage works is that a company gives you money based on the equity in your home, your age and the value of the home. The money doesn't have to be paid back until you sell the house, move away or die. Your financial situation will be reviewed to make sure you can pay insurance, property taxes and maintenance on the house on your monthly income. If your loan is approved, you can expect a monthly sum.

REVERSING AGING WITH EXERCISE We've known for a long time that exercise is good for seniors. Now scientists have been able to isolate just why that is -- right down to the cell level -- and determine what type of exercise is best. High-intensity interval training (called HIIT), such as walking and cycling, won out over resistance training and a program that combined both, according to the Mayo Clinic. At the heart of the study is mitochondrial cell function, which seniors lose as we age. High-intensity interval training makes new protein in the muscles ... and reverses some signs of aging. Yes, they said, it's necessary to do a few days of resistance training to actually make muscles stronger, but that wouldn't happen without the high-intensity aerobic exercise. Two age groups were recruited for the study, 18-30 and 65-80, with each broken into three groups. One group concentrated on HIIT cycling. Another worked with leg weights. The third did a combination program. After 12 weeks, lean muscle mass was checked and compared to control subjects who did no exercise. In the HIIT group, the seniors had an increase of 69 percent in mitochondria activity, compared with the younger group at 49 percent. How do we take advantage of this new information? First, check with your doctor that a HIIT program would be appropriate for you. It might work something like this: sitting on a stationary cycle and pedaling moderately for a period of time, with 30-second bursts of fast pedaling in the middle. Or, a moderate walking pace might be broken up with high-intensity moving for a half minute. For maximum benefit, try what the research group did: three days of high-intensity training, with two days of weight training.

REVERSE MORTGAGES: BE WARY, DO HOMEWORK While in a very narrow set of circumstances a reverse mortgage can be a benefit in retirement, this path is not for everyone.

However, there are sad tales everywhere from people who didn't understand all the potential pitfalls of reverse mortgages. The loan can be called for any number of reasons: failure to pay property taxes or insurance premiums, not maintaining the property and more. Beware if only one of you is age 62 or older, and if that spouse is not listed on the deed. If only one of you signs for the loan, the other could be forced to move out of the home after the death of the signer, with the home being sold or foreclosed. Since 2014 the "non-borrowing spouse" has more protections, but there are time limits to establishing the right to stay in the home. As a protection, you'll be required to attend counseling to make sure you know about reverse mortgages. Don't stop there, however. Get expert advice before you begin. To process the loan, only use a Certified Reverse Mortgage Professional. Go online to the National Reverse Mortgage Lenders Association website (www.reversemortgage.org) and read how a reverse mortgage works, especially the Your Roadmap step-by-step information and the Reverse Mortgage Self-Evaluation. Best bet: If you have any alternative to increasing your retirement income, use that option instead of a reverse mortgage. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Abnormalities of the muscles, such as rigidity and the uncontrollable jerking you mention, are very common. Finally, sweating, high body temperature, vomiting and diarrhea also may be part of the syndrome. Treatment is stopping the medication that caused the symptoms. Many experienced practitioners will use the same or similar medications that caused the serotonin syndrome at a lower dose if it is the only effective treatment, but this requires expertise and careful monitoring.

Deplin, a brand of methylfolate, is a B-type vitamin that can make SSRIs work better. It's not associated with serotonin syndrome, as far as I have been able to find.

SEROTONIN SYNDROME AFFECTS MOOD, MUSCLES DEAR DR. ROACH: After being on Paxil for about 15 years, it wasn't working anymore. My doctor decreased my dose, and I slowly started Viibryd. The first week I felt great. When I increased the dose of Viibryd, I began feeling sick. I had a bad headache, anxiety and couldn't sleep, and my muscles began jerking. I went to the doctor, and she had me stop immediately, prescribed Deplin for seven days, and said that I'd had serotonin syndrome. When I looked it up, I found it can be fatal if the SSRI is not stopped. I was off all SSRIs for about 10 days but started feeling unconfident and fragile, so I began taking 25 mg of Paxil CR. My doctor seemed concerned that the serotonin syndrome could return, and advised me to take Deplin along with the Paxil. How common is this syndrome? I am weaning myself off the Paxil, but what if I need an antidepressant? — M.M. ANSWER: Serotonin syndrome is more common than often is suspected. It is an abnormality of brain chemistry caused most often by medications, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), like paroxetine (Paxil) and vilazodone (Viibryd).

ANSWER: To be honest, no. However, I did look it up, and found that Cameron erosions are found only in people with a hiatal hernia. A hiatal hernia isn't like an umbilical or groin hernia; in a hiatal hernia, the stomach goes upward into the chest through the diaphragm, the sheet of muscle that separates your chest from your abdomen. It is our primary muscle for breathing. There normally is a hole in the diaphragm (the hiatus), but in a hiatal hernia, the structures that hold the stomach in place weaken and allow it to go into the chest. The part of the stomach inside the chest is prone to bleeding, and the areas that bleed can be seen by the endoscope and are called Cameron erosions, or ulcers. Small hiatal hernias usually can be managed with medication as necessary. However, large hernias and those with a history of bleeding may require surgical repair. An expert is needed to decide whether surgery is required. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Find All the Fun and Games Answers on Page 14! been pervasive in sports in any city anyway ... it's just that putting your sport in Vegas would be like locking yourself in a cage with a mama grizzly after she just saw you kick her cub through the uprights. (She bet the under.)

VEGAS ON ICE Looks like when you bring $750 million to the table, having a professional football team in Las Vegas doesn't look like such a bad bet anymore, does it now? Since Vegas' inception as America's gambling mecca, professional sports has eschewed the town, ostensibly because they didn't want to be hit with the gambling tar brush. And it wasn't without good reason — in those days, the people taking bets weren't math nerds working for corporate, capeesh? Not that gambling hasn't always

On March 27, the great city of Oakland got kicked in its rotten teeth yet again by the Davis family, those leather jacket-wearing sadists who love nothing more than to bring pain to the NFL's most passionate, cosplaying fanbase. Unable (read: unwilling) to hash out a deal with Oakland that made sense to both parties, the Raiders were able to secure the extra money in various ways (that don't really matter for the purposes of this story) in order to make the move. In the words of my great journalist friend Nadia Pflaum at the Ogden Standard: "Moving is expensive, yo!" The upshot is, the Raiders have a new stadium on the way, Las Vegas will have an NFL team and Oakland will plan ahead for 2030, when New Orleans and Jacksonville will need new stadia (Tampa Bay will too, but I doubt they'll pull up stakes). But breakups are never easy. Oakland fans are left cursing themselves for having fallen for it again. From the first Reagan administration to the Clinton administration, the Raiders were rotten in Los Angeles. Then they

For Advertising Information Call 954-667-3237 came back. Now they're leaving ... two years from now. With a season-ticket waiting list. Awwwkward. It get's weirder. The vote to allow the Raiders to move was supposedly heavily lobbied for by both Davis and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Davis is, by all bank accounts, considered to be the poorest of the rich, and he could not pass up the deal of a brand-new, municipally funded stadium. Jones, who pushed hard for the San Diego and St. Louis to Los Angeles deals, has vested interests in new stadiums everywhere: His entertainment services company Legends handles the luxury box contracts. He's happy, the league is happy. San Diego lost the Chargers, but it can be calmed with soccer. St. Louis is a baseball town. Since Vegas went corporate, it's been one of the safest towns to host a sports team. The question will come down to fan base. It's a resort town, service-industry heavy and there's a high unemployment rate and a relatively small population for a NFL city ... less than half the size of Oakland's metro area. The NHL will break the ice, so to speak, and I see no reason why they shouldn't enjoy the same rapturous success that met the Atlanta Thrashers. But Mark Davis and the Raiders will stick around as long as someone is dealing. That's a bet you can always count on. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. due to the new precision machines and tools that had been installed by the company at its main plant in Ohio. The Eggshell Georgian is the second pattern issued in this series. Advertisements in trade journals promoting the new china were published as early as October of 1935.

EGGSHELL CHINA

For a complete history of this pattern and others manufactured by Homer Laughlin, I highly recommend The Collector's Encyclopedia of Homer Laughlin by Joanne Jasper (Collector Books). I found several copies available at amazon.com for $18.96, used copies $12.50. Typical prices listed in this excellent guide are an Eggshell Georgian 10-inch plate, $9-$12; tea cup, $3-$6; teapot, $45-$65; and salad bowl, $15-$30.

How much do you think the tape is worth? — Lee, Lancaster, New York A: Your tape probably is a home recording, and as such its value would be minimal. I do not think it would be of interest to collectors. For a second opinion, contact antique dealers in your area. Here's how: 1) Use a sink or a large container, rather than a bathtub. Fill it with just a couple of inches of lukewarm to cool water. 2) Place a harness and leash on the cat if controlling her will be a problem. Then carry the cat to the sink, giving it lots of praise. 3) Carefully wet the cat up to its neck and add a small amount of perfume-free pet shampoo. Use a damp cloth to wipe its head and neck.

HOW TO BATHE A CAT IN 6 FUNFILLED STEPS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My 3-year-old cat "Zuzu" loves to go outside and roll around in everything. She comes back in covered with burrs, or mud, or whatever funk she happens upon. I'm not sure why she does this — isn't that something dogs are known for? Thankfully, she rarely has eas, since I give her a monthly ea treatment. But she hates baths. How can I keep Zuzu clean? — Wit's End in St. Paul, Minnesota DEAR WIT'S END: Before we get into the science of cat bathing, I have to ask: Has Zuzu been spayed? If not, that could be playing a role in her, um, adventurousness. Otherwise, try to limit her exploration to the yard if possible. Now, to the dreaded cat bath. This is rarely fun for cats or owners. Fortunately, most cats rarely need a bath; too-frequent baths can dry their skin, which can lead to bigger problems.

4) Dry the cat with a clean towel, give it a treat, and remove the leash and harness. 5) Let the cat be mad at you for a while. 6) Clean and bandage the scratches on your hands and arms.

CAT'S BAD BREATH DEFIES TREATMENT DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My cat "Sheena" has had horrible bad breath for the past six months, and nothing seems to help. She is almost 14 years old, spayed and in good health. I supplement her diet occasionally with a pill — brewer's yeast and garlic — crushed up in her food. I also use special dental-care dry foods and dental-care treats. I brush her teeth (when she lets me) and massage her gums. I also put parsley in her wet food occasionally. What else can I try? —Deborah W., via email DEAR DEBORAH: From your email it appears that Shee-

na sees the vet regularly, which is important for senior pets in particular. While bad breath (halitosis) often is due to dental problems like gingivitis — where bacteria builds up in the mouth around the gums and contributes to a foul odor — other conditions like diabetes, digestive disorders, cancer and even sinus inammation have bad breath as a symptom. So make sure cats with chronic halitosis get a complete exam to rule out other underlying issues. As for home solutions to simple halitosis: You're doing all the right things. However, as Sheena ages, her immune system might make her more vulnerable to gum disease. Keep it up, especially massaging her gums and trying to brush her teeth. Instead of a brush, you could try swiping her teeth with a cotton ball or very soft cloth soaked in warm water, a gentle swipe from the gum line downward. Additionally, be careful with the amount of brewer's yeast and garlic you give her daily, because garlic is toxic to cats. Follow the right dosage for her weight. Carver studied this legume because he wanted to help poor cotton farmers in the South improve their depleted soil. He found that peanuts also are an inexpensive protein food crop. Carver discovered more than 300 uses for peanuts, although he didn't invent peanut butter, he used peanuts to create everything from shaving cream and shampoo to wood stains and plastics. Carver died in 1943 at the age of 78. His epitaph reads: "He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world."

DISCOVERING DR. CARVER Dr. George Washington Carver is one of America's most famous scientists. His work at Tuskegee University in Alabama included groundbreaking research on plant biology that brought him to national prominence. Dr. Carver's scientific expertise made him one of the most famous African-Americans and one of the best-known black intellectuals of his time. Many of his early experiments focused on the development of new uses for crops such as peanuts, sweet potatoes, black-eyed peas, soybeans and pecans to replenish soil depleted by planting cotton. The hundreds of products he invented include plastics, paints and dyes, and created a new source of revenue for Southern farmers. Carver also worked as a consultant for Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. Ford worked with Dr. Carver to find ways to use alternative crops such as peanuts and soybeans to produce a substitute for gasoline through the production of ethanol (or grain alcohol). In 1942, Ford displayed a car with a lightweight plastic body made from a formula Dr. Carver developed from soybeans. Carver studied several plants, but is best known for his work with peanuts. He also developed a soothing ointment and massage treatment using peanut oil that he called Carvoline. Carvoline brought relief to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and many others suffering from polio or limb pain. President Roosevelt traveled to Tuskeegee University to personally thank Dr. Carver.

Dry-roasted peanuts are an excellent source of magnesium, niacin and potassium. They're also a good source of zinc, copper, thiamine and phosphorus, are high in fiber and contain iron, pantothenic acid and vitamin B-6. Peanuts are high in fat — mostly unsaturated fat, which is a healthier choice than the saturated fat found in meat. A half-ounce of peanuts or tree nuts or a tablespoon of peanut butter counts as the equivalent to 1 ounce from the protein group. Most older children and adults need approximately 4 to 6.5 ounces from this food group each day. It's also a good source of protein for children who don't like to eat meat. Try my recipe for Asian-Style Peanut Noodles for a new way to incorporate peanuts into your diet.

ASIAN-STYLE PEANUT NOODLES 1 pound whole wheat spaghetti 2 teaspoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger (or 1 teaspoon ground ginger) 1/4 cup smooth peanut butter 3/4 cup soy (or almond) unsweetened milk, divided 1 (12 ounce) package broccoli slaw 1 cup frozen green peas 3 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Chopped roasted peanuts, for garnish (optional)

Depositphoto 1. Cook spaghetti according to package directions. Be sure to reserve at least 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid when you drain it. 2. Meanwhile, heat a large saute pan over medium heat and add olive oil. Add garlic and fresh ginger, and saute for 30 seconds. 3. Add peanut butter and 1/2 cup of the milk; stir well to combine and melt the peanut butter. 4. Add broccoli slaw and stir to get it well-coated. Reduce the heat to low and let simmer for 3-4 minutes, until broccoli slaw is softened. 5. Add frozen peas and soy sauce, salt, pepper, cayenne and the remaining 1/4 cup milk. Stir well to combine. Let simmer for another 2 to 3 minutes. 6. Add the spaghetti to the pan once it's cooked, along with 1/4 cup of reserved cooking water to loosen the mixture and help the sauce adhere to the noodles, more as needed. Serve warm or cold with a wedge of lime. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. * It was the 32nd president of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, who made the following sage observation: "Government by organized money is just as dangerous as government by organized mob." * You might be surprised to learn that Helen Keller, best known as the first blind and deaf person to earn a bachelor's degree, loved performing. She spent years on vaudeville tours, and in 1919 she starred in "Deliverance," a silent film about her life. * If you're like 83 percent of American pet owners, you believe that your pet is better at cuddling than your significant other. * According to Guinness World Records, the world's largest snowflake measured 15 inches across. * The Bureau of Labor Statistics, the government's principal fact-finding agency in the field of labor economics and statistics, tracks employment trends. Using nation-

wide employment data, the BLS created projections of which occupations are likely to increase and which are likely on the decline. Unsurprisingly, healthcare and technology jobs are on the rise, while employment in manufacturing and farming is falling. It even identified 15 specific occupations as "fast declining." At the top of the list of jobs on the way out are locomotive firers -though the surprise for many may be that the job even still exists. Also included in the top 10 are telephone operators, switchboard operators, postal service mail sorters, and sewing- and shoe-machine operators. * In the Canadian town of Churchill, Manitoba, most people don't lock their car doors. The primary motivation for this practice isn't trust (although, of course, trust is required), but public safety: A pedestrian who unexpectedly encounters a polar bear will be able to find refuge in any car along the street. * With warmer weather approaching, you might want to consider heading to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to witness an annual rite of spring. Students at Lake Superior State University gather on (or near) the first day of spring for the annual Snowman Burning. Started in 1971 by a campus club known as the Unicorn Hunters, the tradition involves setting alight a 12-foot-tall "snowman" — usually built of recycled paper, wood and wire — to celebrate the end of winter. * If you haven't listened to any new music in a while, chances are you're over 33. Those who study such things

say that's the age at which Americans would rather stick to what they know than try out new tunes. * If winter seems to be dragging on endlessly, be glad you don't live on Uranus; there, winter lasts 21 years. *** Thought for the Day: "I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat." — Dame Rebecca West (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Join Us for a Pit Stop!

In September of 2016 the Humane Society of Broward County held their first-ever Pit Stop event at the Funky Buddha Brewery. The idea was to promote the adoption of “bully breeds,” of which the HSBC, and many other shelters, see many of. These include the American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, American bulldog and others. The HSBC wants to educate our community and raise awareness of these often misunderstood bully breeds, in hopes of having them viewed in a more positive light. There are many stereotypes that are often associated with these dogs, but by taking the dogs out of the shelter and introducing them to people, they can then see for themselves how sweet and friendly the dogs are. The Pit Crew (HSBC staff and volunteers) will be making several “Pit Stops” which are sponsored by Dolly’s Dream over the next few weeks and they hope you will come out and meet them.
