by Kathy Wolfe It’s the merry month of May, a time filled with all sorts of interesting commemorations. Tidbits presents a list of events, ranging from silly to serious. • Holy May Day, it’s Batman Day! May 1 is the day to pay tribute to America’s favorite super-hero. This comic book hero first hit the newsstands in May of 1939 in Detective Comics #27, and was originally called The Bat-Man. He was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger. The Caped Crusader’s secret identity is that of an American billionaire and playboy Bruce Wayne, who, after witnessing the murder of his parents as a child, vowed vengeance against criminals in Gotham City. Bill Finger came up with the name Bruce Wayne by combining the name of Scottish patriot Robert Bruce with that of American Revolutionary War hero Mad Anthony Wayne. • Save the Rhino Day on May 1 is to draw attention to saving this endangered mammal. There are five species of rhinos, with three of these listed as critically endangered. Only 60 Javan rhinoceros remain. Only about 3,000 rhinos live in the world worldwide. The white rhino can weigh over 7,700 lbs. (3,500 kg) and is the second largest land mammal. Even the smallest rhino reaches a weight of 2,200 lbs. (1,000 kg). • Star Wars fans are well aware of the importance of May 4. This day was chosen as Star Wars Day, and the pun “May the Fourth be with you” is the motto of the day as a play on words of the films’ catchphrase “May the Force be with you.” The phrase was possibly used in writing for the first time in 1979 when Margaret Thatcher won the election on May 4th to become Britain’s first woman Prime Minister. A large ad in the London Evening News proclaimed, “May the Fourth be with you, Maggie. Congratulations.”

• May 8, 1945 was a day of celebration as Great Britain and the United States celebrated Victory in Europe Day, or V-E Day, the day that German troops throughout Europe finally surrendered, putting an end to the rise of the Nazis, and marking the end of World War II in Europe. Adolf Hitler had committed

THE MONTH OF MAY (continued):
suicide just days earlier, on April 30, and his successor authorized the surrender. It was a nice birthday present for President Harry S. Truman, who was also celebrating his 61st birthday that day. • Canada celebrates Victoria Day on May 22 this year, the only country that commemorates Queen Victoria with an official holiday. Victoria was born on May 24, 1819, and although she ruled Britain for nearly 64 years, her reign is not a record-setter for the longest. That honor belongs to her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II, who passed by her ancestor in September, 2015. Canada’s Parliament first proclaimed the holiday in 1845, although it wasn’t signed into law until 1901, following Victoria’s death. In other Canadian news, the country also celebrates its immigrants on May 22 this year on Canadian Immigrants Day, also called Citizenship Day, first observed in 1950, and always on the same weekend as Victoria Day. • If you’re a chocolate lover, chances are you’ve indulged in Russell Stover chocolates. May 6 is Russell Stover Candies Day in honor of this candymaker born in a Kansas sod house in 1888. After studying chemistry at Iowa State University, Stover took a job as a sales rep for a tobacco company. He moved on to a Canada wheat farm before taking a sales job with a Minnesota candy company. Stover and his business partner were the first to create the chocolate-dipped ice cream bar, named Eskimo Pie by Stover’s wife. In the meantime, he and his wife Clara were experimenting in their kitchen with various candy recipes. A move to Denver in 1923 was the beginning of

the famous company. Within two years, there was another factory in Kansas City, followed by a third in Nebraska. When Stover died in 1954, the company was making 11 million pounds (4,989,516 kg) of candy a year, sold in 40 Stover retail outlets and 2,000 department stores. The company is now the nation’s largest producer of boxed chocolates sold in 70,000 stores, producing 100 million pounds (45,359,237 kg) of candy annually. • Morse Code Day on May 24 is the anniversary of the first official telegram. The code had been developed by Samuel F.B. Morse, who, with two others, developed an electrical telegraph system, which sent pulses of electric current along wires connected to an electromagnet at the other end of the system. The code was based on the pulses and the silence between them. • Samuel Morse was not an inventor by nature, but rather a famous portrait painter who had painted John Adams, James Monroe, and the Marquis de Lafayette, among other notables. Morse was led to explore rapid long-distance communication out of a broken heart. While he was away from home working on a portrait, his wife suddenly took ill and perished. By the time Morse received a letter with the news, his wife had already been buried. The first telegraph was sent from the Capitol in Washington, D.C. over 40 miles (64.4 km) of wires to Baltimore. A Congressman’s 17-year-old daughter was allowed to choose what the first telegram would say, and she chose a phrase from the Bible, “What hath God wrought?” Within 10 years, more than 20,000 miles (32,187 km) of telegraph had been strung in the United States. Western Union, the best-known telegram company in the U.S., was founded in 1851, and continued sending telegrams until 2006 when its last telegram was delivered. By that time, because of the competition of other communications methods, the total number of telegrams had fallen to a total of just 20,000 a year.

Amazing Plants
MEDICINAL HERBS Because May 6 has been declared Herb Day, Tidbits is focusing on the healing properties of several different herbs. • The uses of herbs vary from culinary to medicinal to spiritual. In the culinary world, chefs differentiate between herbs and spices, with herbs referring to the leafy or flowering parts of a plant, such as thyme, parsley, or basil, while spices come from other parts of the plant, such as seeds, berries, bark, roots, and fruits. • The ancient Chinese and Egyptians were writing of how to use herbs as medicine as early as 3,000 BC. A Greek physician named Galen formulated herbal remedies with up to 100 ingredients around the year 160. • Many folks swear by the use of Echinacea for combatting the common cold. The plant is a member of the daisy family, with the most common varieties known as purple coneflowers and black-eyed Susans. The leaves, stems, flowers, and roots can be brewed as tea, or squeezed as juice or extract. Studies indicated that Echinacea does seem to increase the number of white blood cells, which fight infections. • Ginger seems to be beneficial in a multitude of areas. University studies indicate that it may slow the growth of colorectal cancer cells and induce death to ovarian cancer cells. Ginger has long been used to treat nausea, morning sickness, colic, and motion sickness, but has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and painkilling properties as well. • Not only does lavender smell heavenly, it’s useful as an insect repellant, as a disinfectant, and in the treatment of acne and athlete’s foot. When inhaled, it’s said to ease exhaustion, insomnia, irritability, and depression. • The ginkgo tree, native to many parts of Asia, is a large tree with fan-shaped leaves, and is one of the longest-living tree species, with trees living as long as

1,000 years. There are a number of claims as to the benefits of ginkgo, including enhancing memory and attention. Some studies have used ginkgo for the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, without concrete evidence supporting its benefit, although it does seem to improve blood circulation, which could help the brain function better. Ancient writings dating to 2600 BC describe its use in the treatment of asthma and bronchitis. Some users today claim benefits in the treatment of glaucoma, macular degeneration, ADHD, vertigo, and difficulty concentrating. • Although the valerian plant has sweetly-scented pink or white flowers, it’s the roots that are well-known for its sedative qualities. Some studies indicate that it can relax the central nervous system, and it has been used as a sleeping aid for centuries, as well as a muscle relaxant to ease pain. • Remember when Peter Rabbit’s mother gave him a nice cup of chamomile tea after he had eaten too much in Mr. McGregor’s garden? For many, this member of the sunflower family seems to help with soothing stomach aches as well as help with sleep. For other, it aids in the healing of wounds, abscesses, gum inflammation, and diaper rash. • The root of the ginseng plant is one of the most popular herbal medicines in the world. Research indicates that ginseng may help lower blood sugar levels as well as boost the immune system. Other possible benefits include enhancing energy and improving thinking ability and cognition.

lessons can reduce a child’s chance of drowning by up to 88%.
• May 1 has been designated Melanoma Monday, with the aim of raising awareness about this aggressive form of skin cancer. Close to 90,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed this year, with deaths estimated at nearly 10,000. Although melanoma accounts for only 1% of skin cancers, it’s responsible for 75% of all skin cancer fatalities. Exposure to ultraviolet rays is a major risk factor, with sun, tanning beds, and sun lamps as major sources. Those with red or blond hair, blue or green eyes, those who burn easily, and fair-skinned people with freckles have a higher risk for melanoma. Cells within moles on the skin turn malignant and, left untreated, spread rapidly to other areas of the body.
• Who knew there was a special day devoted to celebrating hummus? International Hummus Day, May 13, was brainstorm of a young 21-year-old entrepreneur named Ben Lang, who, in 2012, envisioned a holiday that could “bring people together from around the world.” This ancient dish, first recorded in cookbooks in the 13th century starts with mashed chickpeas, adding ground sesame seeds, olive oil, lemon juice, and garlic. Chickpeas are rich in fiber, protein, manganese, and B vitamins.
• In 1865, author Mark Twain published his first short story “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog,” more commonly known today as “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” It featured a pet frog named Dan’l Webster and a competition between men betting on which frog could jump higher. This sparked the Calaveras County, California Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, with origins in 1893, and today’s Jumping Frog Day on May 13. The County has recorded the current record-holder as Rosie the Ribeter, with a jump of 21 feet, 5.75 inches (6.57 m). • If you’ve never learned to swim, May 20th is for you! It’s National Learn to Swim Day, set aside to raise awareness about the importance of teaching children to swim. Every day, ten people die from drowning across the country. Of these, two are 14 or younger. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the U.S. for children aged 1 to 4, and fifth overall for all ages. Swimming
• May 26 is World Lindy Hop Day, paying homage to the lively bouncing dance of the Jazz and Swing Eras. The hop originated in the African-American communities of Harlem shortly after Charles Lindbergh’s famed solo non-stop crossing of the Atlantic in 1927. A mere 10 days after Lindy’s landing in Paris, the dance was named for the pilot who had “hopped the Atlantic,” a trip of more than 3,600 miles (5,794 km). The dance is still popular today and is frequently included in performances and competitions. • Raise your glass of Chardonnay on May 26, National Chardonnay Day. The greenskinned Chardonnay grapes’ origins are in Burgundy, France. In 1912, cuttings from French vines were brought to Livermore Valley, California, an area just east of San Francisco. Today, nearly 100,000 acres of this grape are planted throughout the state. Chardonnay is America’s most popular wine, even more so than red, and the grape is the world’s most widely-planted white wine grape. Depending on the area of production, plums, apples, pears, figs, peaches, and melons are added to the recipe.

HOLLYWOOD — Media outlets are confused about "Feud: Bette and Joan." They seem to think there will be a second season of "Bette and Joan." Ratings for the first episode of "Bette and Joan" far surpassed the next six, and only the final episode matched it. The next season of "Feud" will be about Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Susan Sarandon (Bette Davis) has been retelling how Davis chose her to play her in an earlier project, based on the 1985 "tell-all" book, "My Mother's Keeper, by Davis' daughter, B.D. Hyman (her married name). But Sarandon admits, "I was young and inexperienced, and my agents were too lame to act on her request." Sarandon has completed two new films: The first is the crime-comedy spin-off "Going Places," written, produced, directed and starring John Turturro (based on his character in the 1998 cult classic "The Big Lebowski"). Bobby Cannavale also stars. The second film is "The Death and Life of John F. Donovan," with "Game of Thrones" star Kit Harrington, Oscar-winners Natalie Portman and Kathy Bates, and Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain. Jessica Lange (Joan Crawford) so far has only the upcoming film "The Lonely Doll," based on the children's book by Dare Wright and slated for 2018 release. *** In less than a month, "Beauty and the Beast" joined the $1 billion club (already making it the 25th top-grossing film). Dan Stevens, who plays the Beast, is so hot he has three films awaiting release: the thriller "Marshall," with Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad and Kate Hudson, due Oct. 13; the romantic comedy "Permission," with Rebecca Hall and Jason Sudeikis; and "The Man Who Invented Christmas," in which he plays Charles Dickens, co-starring
Q: It seems like I've been waiting forever for a new season of "House of Cards." Can you tell me when it will be back? — Vivian C., via email A: You don't have much longer to wait. The political drama/thriller will return to Netflix for its fifth season on Tuesday, May 30. The 13 new episodes will focus on Frank (Kevin Spacey) and Claire's (Robin Wright) campaign for president and vice president, respectively, after winning the party's nomination at the end of last season. Returning this season are Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Neve Campbell, Derek Cecil, Paul Sparks, Joel Kinnaman and Dominique McElligott, with Patricia Clarkson and Campbell Scott joining in on the political intrigue. Season five also will deal with Frank and Claire's decision to take the country to war with the Islamic Caliphate Organization (ICO) in order to boost approval ratings. Mahershala Ali, who played Remy Danton, will not be returning. In other Netflix original-programming news, "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" returns May 19. Its third season has Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) trying to divorce Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm), whom she married while she was in his cult in the underground bunker. Since last season Kimmy got her GED, she decides her next step is to go to college. Lillian (Carol Kane) deals with a breakup, and Titus (Tituss Burgess) goes all "Lemonade" on his boyfriend, whom he suspects of cheating. Also returning are Jane Krakowski, Josh Charles and Dylan Gelula. *** Q: Please tell me the rumors are true and that "The X-Files" will be back for another season. — Diana D., Marietta, Ohio

Christopher Plummer (Ebenezer Scrooge) and Jonathan Pryce (as Dickens' father). Somehow he also found time to have three kids with his wife of seven years, jazz singer Susan Hariet. *** Charlie Hunnam, who captured hearts playing Jax in "Sons of Anarchy" (2008-2014), but turned down the "Fifty Shades of Grey" three-film franchise because he didn't count on his series being canceled, is consoled with three big films: "The Lost City of Z," with Robert Pattinson, Sierra Miller, Tom Holland and Franco Nero, out now; the title role in the $100 million "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" (in 3D), directed by Guy Ritchie and co-starring Djimon Hounsou, Jude Law and Eric Bana, out May 12; and "Papillon," in the Steve McQueen role, with Rami Malek, of "Mr. Robot," in the Dustin Hoffman role), coming Dec. 17. Insiders claim the real reason he passed on "Fifty Shades of Grey" was because his wife didn't want him to do it, but ironically, they have since parted. "50 Shades of Divorce," that could be the fourth film in the franchise! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.
Jeffrey Donovan in "Shut Eye" Hulu
A: Fox has indeed ordered a second installment of "The X-Files" event series, which will have 10 episodes and, of course, will star David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. Chris Carter will be back as executive producer. Production doesn't start on the show's 11th season until this summer, and the series is expected to air sometime during the 2017-18 season. When I learn of the exact premiere date, I'll be sure to let y'all know. *** Q: I just binge-watched the entire first season of "Shut Eye" on Hulu, and I am definitely hooked. Do you know if it has been renewed for another season? — Karl T., via email A: The Hulu original drama starring Jeffrey Donovan, KaDee Strickland, Susan Misner, Emmanuelle Chriqui, David Zayas, Angus Sampson and Isabella Rossellini was given the green light for a second season. The show centers on Charlie Haverford (expertly played by Donovan), a Las Vegas magician who comes to LA to try his hand in the world of psychics and fortunetellers. He encounters a lot of physical and metaphorical bumps and bruises along the way as he tries to navigate his mafia-like Roma bosses in his quest for "the big score." Look for season two to be 10 episodes as well. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. The "Medicare Identity Theft Prevention Act of 2008" was passed in Congress by the House, but was ignored by the Senate. Finally, in 2015, Congress passed the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act. It's now a public law. That act gives Medicare until April 2019 to get Social Security numbers off Medicare cards and generate a new beneficiary ID number. That Social Security number is a gold mine to thieves if you should lose your wallet. (Or if they break into a medical office and steal files.)
NEW MEDICARE CARDS COMING... EVENTUALLY You've no doubt noticed that part of your Medicare card number is your Social Security number. That's finally going to change. The push to get Social Security numbers off Medicare cards started in 2002 with the Government Accountability Office saying it was seeing a pattern of identity theft from stolen Medicare cards. In 2006, after an audit by the Office of Inspector General for the Social Security Administration, Medicare fought back and claimed it would take up to 13 years and lots of money to get the number off Medicare cards.
Instead, until the new cards get here, do this: Leave the card at home. Make a photocopy of the card and black out the last four digits of your Social Security number. Only carry the paper copy with you if you have a medical appointment. Now that the word is out about the new Medicare cards coming, scammers are sure to take advantage of that. If you get a call from anyone saying they need personal info from you so you can get your new card, hang up. Or if someone tries to get you to pay for the new card and they need your bank information, it's a scam. If you have questions, call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.

physical and mental decline. If nothing else, if you experience a medical problem, there is no social network to back you up. * Nearly half of seniors don't have adequate transportation. If you know you need more social interaction, it's likely up to you to take steps to fix it, to make the effort to be with others. It might be difficult to step out, but it is possible to develop a social network. Go for a walk in a safe place. Talk to others you meet along the way. Find out if your local college offers free or reduced-rate classes. Put together a group meal or local trip made up of the people you meet at a class. Sign up for the monthly newsletter at the senior center. Volunteer to help with setup of events or to drive others who don't have a car. Go on group outings. Do you have a hobby that could involve being with others? Start with the library, and ask about writer or reading groups, travelogues and speakers who come in to talk on a wide range of topics.
* More than 40 percent of seniors are frequently lonely — even those who are married or in a relationship.
A big component of loneliness can be depression, and it's important to know the signs. If you've been down in the dumps or not felt interested in the things that used to give you pleasure — and if this has gone on for over two weeks — it's time to check in with your doctor. Sleeping too little or too much, and inability to concentrate also are signs.
* Lonely seniors have a 60 percent increased risk for

Sudden onset of weakness is a warning sign of a TIA or stroke, but your situation doesn't really sound like that. Still, giving your doctor the most information will help him decide whether this needs to be looked into further. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been contending with blepharospasm for years. I got some relief from Botox for around four years, but then it stopped working and my doctor moved me to Dysport, which was horrible. It did not relax my symptoms, and it made me constantly very uncomfortable (with a feeling that my eyes were swollen all the time).
DON'T KEEP SECRETS FROM YOUR DOCTOR DEAR DR. ROACH: About three years ago, I was walking from the parking lot to church (not a long distance) and was overcome with a feeling of warmth and weakness throughout my body. I almost dropped my purse, but it stopped almost immediately. About three weeks ago, the same thing happened. I did not feel ill, and it passed almost as fast as it came on. I am 65 years old, exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. I have yearly checkups and blood tests. After looking over my yearly bloodwork, which we do at work, my white blood cell count is usually low, according to my hematologist. He had me do a total body X-ray and several blood tests over a three-month period and found nothing wrong with me. I did not mention the above to him. Can you tell me what can possibly be going on in my body? -- A.N. ANSWER: Since it has happened only twice in three years, and since you have had an evaluation without finding anything, it may just be one of those things that happens that we don't get an answer to. In fact, I think that is the most likely outcome. However, whenever I hear about warmth all over the body, I worry about conditions that cause a release of substances that act on the blood vessels. Carcinoid syndrome and pheochromocytomas are two rare conditions that can cause a temporary flushing sensation, and you certainly should mention this to your doctor. Nei-
I stopped the treatments and have been able to cope, until the past six months. I am almost unable to read, look at a computer screen or drive. Do you have any suggestions? I use Ativan to try to relax the stress of the blinking, but even that has lost its effect. I have been discouraged from getting a limited myectomy because of the risks. My ophthalmologist said that a neurologist would be a waste of time. I am desperate for another opinion. — B.B. ANSWER: Blepharospasm is an uncontrollable muscle spasm around the eyes, often causing blinking and twitching. It ranges from occasional and mild to the much more severe and disabling condition you report. Treatment with botulinum toxin is effective for most people. Botulinum toxin, directly injected into muscle, weakens or paralyzes the muscle. There are three types of botulinum toxin A currently available in the United States: Botox, Dysport and Xeomin, as well as botulinum toxin B (Myobloc). I suspect your ophthalmologist changed brands because of the concern of antibodies your body may have developed to the Botox. I would never say that a neurologist would be a waste of time. Blepharospasm is a limited form of dystonia, and neurologists are the experts in dystonia. The neurologist will have an opinion on trying a different form of botulinum toxin, as well as other treatments. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I'm a 61-year-old woman who was diagnosed with notalgia paresthetica about five years ago. Several years later, my general practitioner told me to use capsaicin, which helps with the tingling feeling, but sometimes it feels like someone is pinching my spine and the skin tingles, bringing on a very uncomfortable feeling. Can you tell me any more about this skin condi-

ANSWER: Notalgia paresthetica is common, but often not diagnosed, and usually causes an itching under one shoulder blade. It sometimes is associated with curvature of the spine (scoliosis). It isn't curable, and often gets better and worse. Capsaicin, lidocaine patch and other creams usually provide some relief. Botulinum toxin and nerve block occasionally are used for people with more severe symptoms who don't respond. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 79-year-old male with mild Parkinson's disease and Type 2 diabetes. I can walk about 10 feet before becoming terribly short of breath and weak. I have been this way for several years, and it has become increasingly worse. Can you help me? — K.C. ANSWER: Neither Parkinson's disease nor Type 2 diabetes explains terrible shortness of breath on mild exertion. Severe shortness of breath can come from serious heart or lung problems (many types) or severe anemia. I can't help: Get to your doctor right away. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Brenda and Eddie. At one point, they manage to decorate their first home with a couple of paintings from Sears. Billy didn't know it at the time, but he was singing about Loria ... he was the guy in charge of buying the paintings for Sears. From there, he bought the Montreal Expos, killed them, bought the Marlins and despite winning a championship in 2003, has done nothing but insult the intelligence of Miami fans ever since. After NFL owner Dan Snyder, there is no more reviled owner in American sports.
It was Ted Turner who said (and I'm paraphrasing) that if you ever have a chance to own a baseball team, you should go ahead and do it because it's a lot of fun. It's hard to argue with Ted when he's making sense. This from a guy who owns an estate larger than the state of Connecticut, brought buffalo back to the dinner table and who once eloquently brushed aside criticism of his wife by declaring he had not, in fact, married "Hanoi Jane," he was simply making out with Barbarella on a nightly basis. To be sure, owning a baseball team puts you in an elite club. There are only 30 of them, so you don't really have the luxury of comparison shopping. When one comes up for sale, if you've got the money and you still have a little bit of the boy (or girl) who collected baseball cards in a shoebox left in you, you make the deal. A quick look at the backgrounds of the current crop of MLB franchise owners shows them to be captains (or sons of captains) of industry, legal whizzes or savvy investors. But as they often do, things got weird in Miami. The owner of the Miami Marlins, Jeffrey Loria, is considered by most observers of the game to be the worst owner in baseball. Remember the Billy Joel song, "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant"? It's a song that details the life of
1. Three times during the 1960s, a major-league pitcher won at least 20 games one season and lost at least 20 the next. Name two of the three.
How quickly can a Jeter/Bush-owned Marlins team turn it around? Let's put it this way — the quickest way Jeb will ever see the inside of the White House will more than likely come via the hands and baseball mind of Jeter, and not any political action committee or otherwise wealthy donor. One can imagine that Jeb would not relish visiting the White House, current occupant considered, but you'd also have to think he'd have to feel a bit proud of the fact that he succeeded where both his older brother — a terrible owner of the Texas Rangers — and Donald Trump (who single-handedly killed the USFL) failed miserably.
2. Who was the first pitcher to finish in the top three of Cy Young voting for five consecutive seasons?
None of that matters in Miami. To the fan, they just got handed a real franchise with a real owner for the first time in a long time. As Ted would acknowledge ... that's a much better way of looking at things.
6. In 2016, American Kim Rhode (women's skeet) became the second athlete to earn an individual medal in six consecutive Olympics. Who was the first to do it?
Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.
7. Jay Haas became the second-oldest event winner (62) in PGA Tour Champions history in 2016. Who holds the record as the oldest?
3. Cal's Jared Goff set a record in the 2015 college-football season for most TD passes (43) by a Pac-12 quarterback. Who had held the mark? 4. Three players have led the NBA in minutes played during their rookie season. Name two of them. 5. Which team holds the record for the longest winning streak in NHL history?

Answers 1. Larry Jackson of the Chicago Cubs (1964-65), Mel Stottlemyre of the New York Yankees (1965-66) and Cleveland's Luis Tiant (1968-69). 2. Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-15). 3. Marcus Mariota of Oregon threw 42 TD passes a season earlier. 4. Wilt Chamberlain (1959-60), Elvin Hayes (1968-69) and Damian Lillard (2012-13). 5. The Pittsburgh Penguins, with 17 wins in a row in the 1992-93 season. 6. Italian luger Armin Zoeggeler, who did it in 19942014. 7. Mike Fetchick was 63 when he won the Seniors Invitational in 1985.
AND SO IT GOES ...
Not too many players own franchises — Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky being the exceptions. Two years after his last hit, Derek Jeter collars Jeb Bush and ponies up $1.3 billion in investment capital and suddenly the weed-cracked, empty parking lots in Miami are about to teem with new life. The fans get a team that will try to win, baseball gets their most bankable superstar back and the Bush family gets to make a few more headlines.

glass is made by placing glass of different colors side by side or in layers and then heating until the individual pieces fuse together in a single mass. Unlike stained glass, fused glass has no leading and there are no limitations on the surface or thickness of the pieces. Most pieces I have seen have a matte, gloss or faceted finish for effect.
BOWL, PLATE, PAPERWEIGHT Q: I have a bowl that has been in my family for almost a century. My grandmother referred to the piece as an example of fused glass. What is fused glass? The piece I have is multi-colored and truly unique. — Susan, Broomfield, Colorado A: According to "Glass A to Z" by David J. Shotwell, fused
*** Q: I have a plate depicting the Lord's Supper. It has two stamps on the back, one from the "Pearl China Company" and the other "Taylor Smith Taylor." I have no interest in its value, but am curious why two marks from two different companies are on this plate? — Carol, Willmar, Minnesota A: The Taylor, Smith and Taylor Company operated in Chester, West Virginia, from 1899 to about 1981. During its last decade, the firm was owned by Anchor Hocking and Company. The Pearl China Company began operations in 1931 in East Liverpool, Ohio. Your plate has two stamps because it was made by one company for the other. This was not uncommon. Some British ceramics have two and three marks that can indicate maker, distributor and even retailer.
*** Q: While prowling through a thrift shop in San Antonio, I found a paperweight in the shape of a horseshoe with a picture of the Cascade Gardens, obviously a souvenir from the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. I paid $25 for it. — Kathy, Gulfport, Mississippi A: The Cascades was an elaborate fountain display that was one of the main attractions at the 1904 Fair. Scott Joplin took one look at it and was inspired to write one of his best rags, "Cascades." Your paperweight is valued in the $100 to $200 range by the late Robert L. Hendershott in his essential guide "1904 St. Louis World's Fair: Mementos and Memorabilia," privately printed and almost impossible to find. Read the terms carefully, though; you may be better off paying with a major credit card when it comes to interest rates.
FINANCIAL AID FOR PET CARE DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have two cats, one of whom suffers from a number of health conditions, including diabetes. The cost of her care is way more than that of my other cat, but I will pay it no matter what. Still, it's sometimes difďŹ cult to cover veterinary bills and medications. Do you have any suggestions? — Greg in Austin, Texas DEAR GREG: Pet care costs, especially pet health care, have risen steadily over the past several years. Even routine care can take a bite out of your budget. And in all but a few cases, pet owners must bear the cost of care.
—Pet insurance can ease the ďŹ nancial burden of pet care, although you may only be able to insure your healthy cat. This insurance reimburses you for medical costs after treatment, so you'll still need to have a way to pay up front for your cats' care. Consumers Advocate recently rated its top 10 insurers. What if you need more assistance in paying for your pets' care? Low-cost vaccination clinics in your area can help with routine care; assistance for more complex issues is provided by some animal care facilities. BestFriends.org lists resources by state. Spicy Eggplant and Mushrooms
Eggplant Lasagna
Makes 6 to 8 servings 2 tablespoons soy sauce 2–3 tablespoons mirin (sweet rice wine) 1 teaspoon maple syrup 1 tablespoon rice vinegar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 cup water 2 teaspoons olive oil 2 small red onions, thinly sliced and quartered 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar 5 long thin Chinese or Japanese eggplants, cut into bite-size pieces 8 ounces cremini or button mushrooms, quartered 4–5 garlic cloves, minced 1–2 tablespoon minced fresh ginger 1 black pepper, to taste 1 cayenne pepper, to taste 15 fresh green beans, broken into bite-size pieces Combine soy sauce, mirin, syrup, rice vinegar, and cornstarch in a small bowl. Add 1/4 cup water and whisk to combine. Set aside.
Makes 8 servings Tender slices of eggplant take the place of pasta in this lasagna making it quite high in fiber. This recipe includes many flavorful and healthful herbs and spices, including oregano—a powerful source of antioxidants. This dish can be assembled ahead of time and baked just before serving. Serve with polenta or sourdough bread and a green salad. 1 large eggplant 1 teaspoon dried thyme 4 cups sliced mushrooms (about 3/4 pound) 3 garlic cloves, minced or pressed 1 teaspoon soy sauce (optional) 1/4 cup whole-wheat flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon dried oregano 2 teaspoons dried basil 2 10-ounce packages frozen chopped spinach, thawed, or 4 pounds fresh spinach, chopped 1 large onion, chopped (about 2 cups) 1 1/2 cups water 1 batch Simple Marinara, or 1 25-ounce jar commercial marinara vegetable oil spray 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Preheat oven to 375˚F. Cut eggplant into 1/4-inch slices (there should be about 12 slices). Arrange in a single layer on a lightly vegetable oil sprayed baking sheet. Bake for 20 minutes, then turn and cook on the other side for 15 minutes. Eggplant should be tender when pierced with a fork. Remove from oven and reduce heat to 350˚F. Spread half the marinara in a large casserole dish and top with half the eggplant slices. Heat 1/2 cup water in a large non-stick skillet. Add onion and cook over high heat, stirring often until all the liquid has evaporated. Add 1/4 cup water and stir to loosen any stuck bits of onion, then continue cooking and stirring until all the liquid evaporates again. Repeat this process twice more. Reduce heat to medium
Heat oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add onions and sauté for 2 to 3 minutes. Add a tablespoon or two of water if needed to keep onions from sticking. Add balsamic vinegar and continue to sauté another 1 to 2 minutes, until softened. Add eggplant and cook for 8 to 10 minutes, until soft. Add mushrooms, garlic, ginger, black pepper, and cayenne. Cook a few minutes longer. Stir sauce again and add to the vegetables. Add green beans. Mix well and cook for another few minutes until sauce is thick and green beans are the desired consistency. Remove from heat and serve. Variations: Add 1 cup tofu cubes at the same time as the green beans, use crushed red pepper instead of cayenne, and/or serve topped with chopped green onions or fresh cilantro. and add spinach, basil, oregano, garlic powder, nutmeg, and salt. Cook for about 3 minutes, stirring often, until spinach is hot, and then stir in flour. Cook for 2 minutes stirring constantly. Spread half the spinach evenly over the eggplant slices. Heat remaining 1/4 cup water and soy sauce, if using, in a large non-stick skillet. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add mushrooms, thyme, and black pepper. Cook for about 5 minutes over medium heat, stirring often, until mushrooms are browned. Spread in casserole dish over spinach. Top mushrooms with remaining eggplant slices, remaining spinach, and remaining marinara. Bake at 350˚F for about 40 minutes until
heated through. Stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, leftover Eggplant Lasagna will keep for up to 3 days. Per serving Source: The Survivor’s Handbook: Eating Right for Cancer Survival by Neal D. Barnard, M.D. and Jennifer Reilly, R.D.

* It was Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra — widely regarded as the best writer in the Spanish language and one of the best novelists in any language — who made the following sage observation: "No fathers or mothers think their own children ugly; and this self-deceit is yet stronger with respect to the offspring of the mind." * You might be surprised to learn that Princess Di was also a tap-dancer. * In the newly egalitarian society that emerged after the French Revolution in the 18th century, the color known as "royal blue" experienced a precipitous decline in popularity. Royalty may have been out of power, but practicality still ruled. For the most part, people didn't throw out their old clothes, or even re-dye them; to get rid of any monarchist overtones, they simply started calling the color "national blue." * In New Zealand, speed bumps are commonly known as "judder bars." * The court system in the Central African Republic is having difficulty dealing with the caseloads. One of the primary problems is witchcraft. It seems that 40 percent of all prosecutions in the nation involve some form of witchcraft, including 5 percent of all juvenile cases. * You might be surprised to learn that, among readers from families with incomes of at least $100,000, The Reader's
* Have you ever heard of the Clarke-Asimov Treaty of Park Avenue? Unless you're a fan of science fiction, you probably haven't. Legend has it that two of science fiction's Big Three, Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke (poor Robert A. Heinlein missed out, it seems), were sharing a cab in New York City when they reached an agreement: Each author would publicly refer to the other as the world's greatest in his specialty. This meant that Asimov touted Clarke as the world's best science-fiction writer -- reserving second place for himself -- while Clarke acknowledged Asimov as the world's best science writer -- also putting himself in second place. Evidence of the agreement is found Clarke's 1972 novel "Report on Planet Three"; the dedication reads, "In accordance with the terms of the Clarke-Asimov treaty, the second-best science writer dedicates this book to the second-best science-fiction writer. * It was the seventh president of the United States, Andrew Jackson, who first allowed the public to enter the White House. He also made sure the presidential abode was well-provided with spittoons -- at least a dozen of them. * Those who study such things say that cannabis has been used to ease childbirth pains in a variety of cultures, ranging from the Middle East to Northern Africa to East Asia -- and the evidence dates as far back as 2000 B.C. * Those who study such things say that the koala bear has two opposable thumbs on each hand. For household item printing: Wind household string or twine tightly around the rolling pin. The rounds may be close or far apart. Tape ends in place. Or, attach rubber bands around the rolling pin however you wish. You also could wrap bubble wrap around the rolling pin and tape in place.
of-a-kind designs. Think of all the possibilities — table runners, placemats or pillows to toss on your couch to brighten it up for spring. Here's the stuff you'll need:
ROLLING-PIN PRINTING FOR ARTFUL INDOOR FUN Roll out a rainy-day art project with kids using an unlikely printing tool: a rolling pin. Budding artists won't forget the fun of creating oodles of poster-paint prints of patterns and graphic designs on construction paper, cardstock (for a snazzy set of stationery) or even on the walls of a cardboard playhouse. This clever printing technique isn't just for kids, so get in on the creating, too. Add some artsy touches to your home by rolling out acrylic paint on fabric for one-
touch & take off!
—standard rolling pin (toy rolling pins work well for small hands) —thin cardboard, grocery-store bag or plastic wrap to cover and protect the rolling pin —scissors —tape —self-adhesive craft foam for making shapes —pencil —household items such as twine, string, rubber bands, bubble wrap, etc., for designs —Paper for printing. (Freezer and art paper on rolls works well for big projects) —Poster paint —Paper plate or tray —small paintbrush Here's the fun: 1. Leaving handles exposed, cut cardboard, bag or plastic wrap to cover rolling pin. Secure tightly with tape.
3. Pour a puddle of paint on plate or tray, and spread it around with the brush. Roll the pin in the paint to coat shapes and designs, then roll on the paper. 2. Attach shapes and designs. For foam sheet printing: Draw shapes and alphabet letters on the foam sheet using a pencil. Cut out, peel off the paper, and press on the covered rolling pin, keeping in mind how designs will be printed on the paper. For a continuous design, attach cutouts close together. Alphabet letters must be affixed backward. (If you only have plain foam sheets, use household glue on the backside and let dry completely.)
