• In 1926, Route 66 was officially commissioned, a 2,448mile (3,940-km) road from Chicago to Los Angeles, winding through Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Texas, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. At the end of that year, just 800 miles (1,287 km) were paved. Road signs didn’t go up until the following year. It wasn’t until 1938 that the entire route was paved, the first highway to have this completed.

• Near Amarillo, Texas, travelers can visit Cadillac Ranch, a row of 10 Cadillacs with the tailfins reaching to the sky.

The cars, ranging from 1949 to 1963, are half-buried, nose first in the Texas countryside, the brainstorm of a Texas patron of the arts. It’s the only place in Texas where it is legal to spray graffiti on an object.

• During the massive dust bowl storms of the 1930s in the Midwest, when millions of tons of topsoil were blown away, over 200,000 people migrated to California along Route 66 in search of a better life. John Steinbeck wrote of the migration in his 1939 book The Grapes of Wrath, dubbing the highway the “Mother Road” and the road of flight for “refugees from dust and shrinking land.”

• Restored to its original grandeur, the world’s largest ketchup bottle stands proudly near Collinsville, Illinois, formerly along Route 66. Built in 1949, this 170-ft.-tall (50-m) structure is actually a water tower painted like a Brooks Rich & Tangy Ketchup bottle, and could actually hold 640,000 14-oz. bottles of ketchup. The Brooks Company left the area in the 1970s.

• In the 1950s, Route 66 became a vacation destination with a wide variety of roadside attractions. Teepee-shaped motels, trading posts, and tourist traps catered to those visiting caves, canyons, mountains, and deserts. The highway ran through Arizona’s Painted Desert, Meteor Crater, and near the Grand Canyon. During the 1940s, the Wigwam Village chain of motels sprang up along the highway. With individual cabins built in the form of teepees, there were seven original locations. Two of the three remaining motels are located on Route 66, in Holbrook, Arizona and Rialto, California.

• In 1946, songwriter Bobby Troup was on a cross-country trip from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles and came up with the idea of writing a song about the journey. The result was “Get Your Kicks on Route 66,” a song that became a huge hit that year for Nat King Cole. When Troup had trouble coming up with lyrics for the tune, he simply filled it with names of towns along the way, starting with the Missouri cities of St. Louis and Joplin, then on to Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Texas, Gallup, New Mexico, the Arizona communities of Winona and Kingman, and California cities Barstow and San Bernardino. Of the eight states that Route 66 passed through, Kansas is the only state not mentioned in the song.

• Full-service gas stations popped up along the length of the route. One major company even took its name from the highway. In 1927, the Phillips Company’s newlydeveloped high-octane gasoline was tested along U.S. Highway 66 in Oklahoma. As the automobile reached its top speed, it was noted that the number was 66 mph (106

of the fictional community of Radiator Springs when the once-booming town was bypassed by the interstate. The idea of Cars was hatched after Pixar’s creative director took a cross-country road trip with his family. He based many of the film’s sites on real-life locations he encountered, including the general store in Hackberry, Arizona, and Erick, Oklahoma’s Sand Hills Curiosity Shop. The movie’s bridges resemble several along Route 66 in Oklahoma, Arizona, and California. The film calls its teepee-shaped motor court the Cozy Cone Motel.

• The 1939 AAA travel directory lists Cuba, Missouri’s Wagon Wheel Cabins as one of the finest motor courts in the state. Constructed in 1934 of Ozark stone, each cabin had its own private tub or shower bath with rates of $2.50 per day for two persons. It’s still in operation today. Cuba also opened Carr’s Phillips 66 service station in 1932 to accommodate the increase of travelers along the route.

• Route 66 began its slow decline in 1953, when Oklahoma opened the Turner Turnpike between Tulsa and Oklahoma, bypassing 100 miles and each of the towns along the road. In 1956, President Eisenhower signed the Interstate Highway Act, calling for a modern four-lane highway system with no intersections. Service stations and commercial businesses were prohibited at the highway access sites and within a few short years, as small towns were bypassed, businesses began to fail from lack of traffic. In 1965, the Highway Beautification Act restricted the road signs that urged travelers to pull off the exit to reach Route 66.

• Route 66 was officially decommissioned and removed from the U.S. Highway system in 1985, and was taken off road maps. Motorists can no longer drive Route 66 uninterrupted from Chicago to Los Angeles. Parts of it are the “business loop” in many cities, while other sections are state and local roads, and some are completely abandoned.

Several stretches have been preserved, with some having been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

GRACE KELLY

The life of Grace Kelly was a fairy tale come true as she went from model to actress to princess. Follow the life of this woman who left the glitter of Hollywood behind to become Her Serene Highness, the Princess Consort of Monaco.

• Born in Pennsylvania, Grace was the daughter of the owner of the largest construction company on the East Coast. Jack Kelly had been an Olympic athlete, the winner of three gold medals in sculling.

Grace’s parents were not happy with her choice to enter the field of acting.

To support herself in her studies, Grace worked as a model, as well as doing commercials, her first one featuring her spraying a can of insecticide around a room.

• Before the big screen, Grace acted in several live television programs and appeared in ads for Max Factor, Lustre-Crème shampoo, Lux soap, and Old Gold cigarettes.

At 21, she received her first movie role, a two-minute, 14second appearance in the 1951 film Fourteen Hours. She caught the eye of actor Gary Cooper, and was selected to star with him in his next film High Noon.

• By her third movie Mogambo, she was a confirmed star with Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Three Alfred Hitchcock movies followed and an Academy Award for 1954’s The Country Girl. A visit to 1955’s Cannes Film Festival changed her life. It was here that she met Prince Rainier of Monaco when she was asked to do a photo shoot with him. It so happened that the prince needed a wife, because according to a 1918 treaty with France, if he did not produce an heir, the tiny principality of Monaco would revert to French rule.

• Grace returned to America, going right back to work on a new movie in which, coincidentally, she played the part of a princess. She began corresponding with the prince, and at the end of the year, Rainier came to America, met Grace’s family, and after three days, proposed marriage.

The Kelly family was required to put up a dowry of $2 million in order for the marriage to take place.

• French law required both a civil and religious ceremony.

The 40-minute civil ceremony was broadcast on April 18, 1956 from the Palace Throne Room of Monaco. That evening the couple attended the opera, where Grace was seen in a hand-embroidered silk gown embellished with 800,000 sequins and 1,500 pearls and rhinestones.

• The religious ceremony held the next day was attended by 600 guests and watched by 30 million people on television.

Grace’s dress, designed and sewn by MGM Studio’s costume masters, used 25 yards of silk taffeta, 100 yards of silk net, and 125-year-old lace that had been purchased from a museum. Thirty-six seamstresses worked for six weeks to complete the gown. The couple invited the entire 3,000 adult population of Monaco to the celebration that followed. The principality’s citizens gifted the newlyweds with a cream and black Rolls Royce convertible.

• Following their seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the Prince’s yacht, the couple settled into their 15th-century mansion, where they raised three children, Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie during their 26-year marriage. In 1982, while driving on a mountain road accompanied by Stephanie, Grace suffered a stroke and lost control of the vehicle, which plunged down the mountainside. Grace died the next day from her injuries at age 52.

Every busy mom I know longs for a place of her own, a retreat from the day-to-day flurry of activities. No wonder 42-year-old Alice Wu-Cardona, mom of three, was thrilled to build a studio behind her house in south San Francisco as a getaway where she could create her colorful stainedglass-window art in peace and quiet. ANSWER: We need to give readers a clue to what we’re talking about. The subject is GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, something most call “heartburn.” It’s the eruption of stomach acid and digestive juices into the esophagus, a place not built to withstand those powerful fluids.

Proton-pump inhibitors are the most effective suppressants of acid production. There are eight: Prilosec (omeprazole), Nexium (esomeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole), Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), Protonix (pantoprazole) and Aciphex (rabeprazole). These medicines have made life livable for people who don’t respond to other strategies or medicines for heartburn control.

All effective medicines have side effects. A side effect of proton-pump inhibitors is weakening of the hip bone with possible fracture of it. It’s not a common occurrence. When it happens, it happens to those who have taken high doses of these medicines for five to seven years. As a preventive step, take a proton-pump inhibitor at the lowest dose that controls symptoms and for the shortest time possible. You can resume taking it if and when heartburn returns.

It doesn’t matter what your age is, you’ve probably munched on animal crackers during your lifetime. What’s the history behind this well-known treat? Follow along and discover the facts.

• Animal crackers were popular long before the familiar red circus wagon box. They were imported from England in the late 1800s, but as demand increased, U.S. factories began production. One of the original companies, Stauffer’s Biscuit Company, began in York, Pennsylvania, and is still in operation today with the same recipe.

• The National Biscuit Company (later Nabisco) began manufacturing animal crackers in 1902, and labeled them “Barnum’s Animals” after circus showman P.T. Barnum.

Boxes of crackers released during the holiday season that year were designed with a string attached to hang on a Christmas tree branch. The “wheels” on the box folded out from the bottom of the box so that it could “roll” on them.

Price per box was five cents.

• Nabisco has produced Barnum’s Animals continuously since 1902, with 54 different animals over the years.

All crackers are produced at their Fair Lawn, New Jersey bakery, with annual sales of more than 40 million packages. They are baked in a 300-ft. (91-m) long oven for about four minutes. About 300,000 crackers are produced during a single shift at the bakery at the rate of 12,000 per minute. Thirty miles (48 km) of string are needed to attach to one day’s worth of packages, about 8,000 miles (3,000 km) a year.

• In 1958, Nabisco added new machinery that improved the appearance of animal crackers. Rotary dies actually engraved intricate details of each animal onto the cracker.

• On Sept. 20, 1960, California hot rodder Mickey Thompson takes another shot at the world land-speed record. Although he only managed to coax his streamlined Challenger up to about 378 mph on his first run and 368 mph on the second, his speedy trips across the Bonneville Salt Flats won worldwide fame for the car and its driver.

• On Sept. 18, 1974, actress Doris Day, one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s and ‘60s, wins a $22.8 million malpractice suit against her former lawyer. After the death of her third husband, Martin Melcher, in 1968, she discovered that her $20 million in life savings had disappeared.

DEAR POTTY TRAINER: Opinions about potty pads are mixed. Some owners think they’re a terrible idea because they teach the dog that it’s OK to “go” anywhere in the house. Others say they’re a lifesaver.

Indoor Potty Pad DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Bell is a 7-year-old Yorkie/ Pomeranian mix. She has a lot of energy and is fairly well housebroken. However, she still has occasional accidents when she is left alone for long periods of time. We’ve tried using training pads. But several times, she shredded them.

So, we got her a Potty Patch, but have not had much luck.

We’ve tried setting the patch by the back door that we use to let her out. We’ve also tried putting the patch by the front door where she has her accidents. But in either place,

I think the success of the pad depends on both the dog and the owner. Some dogs figure it out really quickly; others need more encouragement from their owners. However, every dog is different. You might need to dedicate several days at home to training Bell.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of column space to detail this process, but there are a number of videos online for this and similar brands. Good luck, and don’t give up!

Now is a good time to get a look at the fan itself and make sure the blades are undamaged and attached securely.

If you can’t see anything wrong, plug the unit in securely, remount the fan and motor, and test the fan by turning the circuit back on and then switching the fan on.

Kitchen Vent Fan Stops Working Q: The vent fan above my stove no longer runs. The light on the vent hood works fine, just the fan is not operating.

How can I fix this? -- Lee N., Nashua, N.H.

If the motor is directly wired to the house wiring, proceed with caution. You will need to use a circuit tester to make sure no power is reaching the unit. Without touching any bare wires, place one probe from your circuit tester into one of the wire connectors. Place the other probe against the grounding screw on the fan unit’s metal housing. If the circuit tester glows, power is still reaching the unit -- don’t do anything until you’ve switched off the correct circuit at the panel. Repeat the test with all the wire connectors.

Once you’ve ensured power is not reaching the fan unit,

A: Double-check the fuse at the circuit box. Although the vent hood light is working, suggesting that a tripped fuse isn’t the problem, this is the easiest and fastest thing to check. If it has tripped, reset the switch.

If that isn’t the issue, it’s time to check the unit itself. Turn off power to the vent fan at the circuit box. Remove the fan’s protective grill and filter. Using a flashlight, peer up past the fan blades to see if you can locate a plug that runs from the fan motor to a receptacle inside the fan unit. If you can’t see it, carefully remove the fan bracket by loosening the mounting screws on either side of the housing. Ease the fan and motor out of the housing just a few inches to see how it’s connected.

If the fan has a plug from the motor to the receptacle, make sure it is plugged in completely. Inspect the plug cord for

If it is, bring in an electrician to repair the wires and check the entire circuit for unseen problems.

If everything looks OK and undamaged, you’ll likely need to replace the fan. Kitchen fans can run around $100 by themselves, and you might have to hunt a bit for replacements for older models.

Unscrew the old fan’s mounting bracket and ease the unit out of its housing. Unplug it from the receptacle, if it’s a plug-type unit, or disconnect it from the house wiring (after ensuring no power is reaching the unit). With a helper holding the new unit steady, attach the new unit to the house wiring in the same way as the old -- or plug it into the receptacle if it has a plug -- and mount in place with the existing brackets.

I spoke with Rebecca recently about all things “Maids” (and a little about her stint on another fave of mine, “True Blood”), and she had lots to say. About what to expect for the season finale: “A lot of things come to a head between her and Adrian. I will say that the season opens with a great big chaotic, glamorous party at the Powell house, of which there are many. And the season also closes with a big, large, gorgeous, chaotic party at the Powell house.

And equally dramatic things transpire.

“There are a lot of things going on; by the end of the season, the question, ‘Who killed Flora?’ will be answered. But 10 more questions will rear their heads in its place. And pretty significant questions, actually. There are a lot of things in the balance.”

As for Evelyn’s future in season two, Rebecca is content to leave everything in Marc Cherry’s very capable hands: “I’m sure Marc probably has a lot of ideas. I imagine that I’ll hear some of them soon. And from my perspective, whatever he writes for me is going to be gold. I think he has a love for this character, and I’m very grateful for that.

Whatever direction he decides to go, I’m on board.”

Q: Can you tell me what to look forward to in the next season of “The Mindy Project”? Will she still be with Casey? -- Deanna W., via e-mail

A: You’re not alone, Kimberly. The Lifetime network show is breaking records and taking names; since its debut in June, each week has seen a steady increase in viewers, myself being one of them. And I also can’t get enough of Evelyn Powell, and especially her scenes with husband Adrian. That’s due in no small fact to the fabulous writing and the breathtaking acting by Rebecca Wisocky and Thomas Irwin.

A: Well, it looks as if Mindy and Casey might be kaput after returning from their yearlong goodwill trip to Haiti.

“Justified” star Timothy Olyphant has signed on to guest star as a love interest of Mindy. Viewers will note that this isn’t Timothy’s first foray into sitcoms -- he guest-starred on two episodes of “The Office” back in 2010.

Q: You mentioned a while back that “Eastbound and Down” had been resurrected for a fourth season. Can you tell me when it will premiere? -- Donnie R., via e-mail

A: Danny McBride and his glorious mullet will be back for eight new raucous episodes beginning Sunday, Sept.

29, for its “epic final season” on HBO. Lindsay Lohan is set to make a cameo (as who, I won’t say, so as not to spoil it for you).

Australian-based broadcaster Barry Eaton discovered that he had psychic and clairvoyant skills while studying astrology.

After the death of his partner, Judy, in 1997, it seemed obvious to Eaton that we lead more lives than just one.

Because of that, he accepted the concept of reincarnation, and shortly after began receiving messages directly from Judy and others in the spirit world. The result is this book.

Eaton claims that he first realized he had psychic abilities when a few months after Judy’s death, she visited him through a medium. Even though he had never described himself as a spirit guide, he had that particular skill that allowed him to communicate with the spirit world. He believes that most people have this ability, but just don’t accept or develop it.
