A lot has been said about hero dogs – but not all of them are heroes! Let’s take a look: • When Haroldo Renato Mota of Sao Paulo, Brazil let his dog out one day in February of 2002, he knew there was a high likelihood that the dog would return carrying something he had found- a stick, a bone, a piece of trash. But the dog, a black and white mixed breed named Chumbinho, came back carrying something Mota didn’t recognize. He told the dog to drop it. Mota recognized it all right- a rusty hand grenade. He called police; police called the bomb squad; and the bomb squad detonated the grenade safely.

• Mark and Lara Tomlinson live in South Africa with their kids and their dog Digger. Digger is well named, perpetually burying and unbury bones. One day in February of 2002 when Digger began to dig industriously underneath the children’s playhouse, Mark became curious when another neighborhood dog, a puppy named Jack, joined in the excavation. Going to see what they were so interested in, he found to his alarm that the two dogs had uncovered a bomb.

BAD DOGS (continued): • In 1998 when Rachel Murray of Britain wanted to get a Christmas gift for her roommate, she decided to get him a cell phone. She wrapped it and left it under the Christmas tree. Unfortunately, her dog, a bloodhound named Charlie, enjoyed tearing the package apart while he was bored and unsupervised. Finding the mess but not the phone, Murray dialed the number, hoping to hear it ring. She heard it ringinga muffled ringing, coming from inside Charlie’s stomach.

“At first I though Charlie was lying on the phone- then I realized where it was. I couldn’t believe he’d swallowed it.

• Garbage collector Glen Shaw operates a trash collection service in New Hampshire. He occasionally allowed his large Newfoundland dog named Bear to come along for the ride. But at 4:30a.m. on December 20, 2001, Shaw got out of the 10-wheeled compactor truck to load some garbage in the back. Bear somehow released the hand brake somehow, and the truck began to roll slowly forward. Shaw ran after the runaway garbage truck but was unable to catch it as it gained momentum, rolling down the road. It plunged into the Souhegan River, and Shaw plunged into the water in order to rescue the dog. The dog turned out to be fine, but it took a hazardous material team many hours to clean up the mess.

• In Oklahoma, the Dodson family left their three-month-old puppy in the utility room when they went out. They returned to find their home a pile of rubble. The pup somehow flipped the gas line switch, filling the room with natural gas. When the water heater kicked on, the gas exploded. The pup was hurled clear of the explosion, unharmed.

• Lyle Sneary and his dog Rancher were driving in a truck making the rounds of his Oklahoma cattle herd. Noticing a cow was down, Sneary got out of the truck, while the dog stayed inside. Sneary fed the cow hay out of the back of his truck. Seeing that dinner was being served, the rest of the cattle herd stampeded towards him. He began screaming to head off the herd, which caused Rancher to get excited inside the truck. The dog hit the automatic door lock. Then he knocked the gear shift into neutral. Seeing the truck rolling, Sneary jumped on the sideboard, trying to reach inside the window. He was unable to stop the truck and bailed out right before the rig hit a tree. Sneary and his dog had to walk a mile and a half to call for help. The officer who responded revoked Rancher’s license.

Russell was charged with hunting illegally in an exotic forest. He collected $10,000 (New Zealand dollars) from the state-run insurance company for the accident, and was fined only $500 for illegal hunting.

But then they encountered the Nez Perce Indians, who asked them for supplies. George refused to help them, and was rude. Emma advised him to hold his tongue. When one member of their party started to give the Indians some food, George angrily stopped the exchange. Finally, several warriors told them that they were officially being held hostage, but that they could earn their freedom by exchanging their fresh horses for the Indian’s worn-out horses. When George objected– against the advice of his wife– one of the warriors shot him. It was their second wedding anniversary, and Emma watched her husband fall.

In the confusion, several members of the party escaped, while Emma, her sister, and her brother were taken prisoner. After traveling with the tribe for several days, a tribal council was held. • They soon ran into soldiers, who gave them provisions and went to find George’s body. Instead, they found George.

After being shot twice, he blacked out. When he regained consciousness, he began crawling down the trail. A Nez Perce warrior found him and shot him a third time, this time striking him in the hip. Yet still he did not die.

• When he was found, his rescuers gave him food and supplies, built him a fire, and went to get help. The campfire spread while he was sleeping, burning him badly– so now he had three bullet holes and third degree burns. When Emma received news of his survival, she took a carriage to meet him. The horses spooked while going around a hairpin turn and the carriage overturned, dumping George into a deep ravine. When George finally arrived in the town of Bozeman, a doctor was summoned. The moment the doctor sat on George’s bed, the bed collapsed to the ground. Emma said, “This sudden and unexpected fall, in his enfeebled state, nearly finished him.”

Got Truth? The Dairy Industry’s Junk Science The 2012 report in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine must have rattled the dairy industry. Authored

by Kendrin Sonneville from Harvard University, the study tracked fracture rates in 6,712 adolescents. The results showed that active children who consumed the largest quantities of milk actually had more bone fractures than those who consumed less. In other words, milk doesn’t actually build strong bones.

Previous studies have shown similar findings. Studies of young women published in the journals Bone and Pediatrics show that bone density was bolstered by physical activity, but that increased calcium intake made no difference.

Evidence suggests that milk is similarly unhelpful at the other end of the lifespan, when osteoporosis and bone breaks are particularly common. The Harvard Nurses’ Health Study, which followed more than 72,000 women for 18 years, showed no protective effect of increased milk consumption on fracture risk. Those women who consumed the most milk were as likely to suffer a hip fracture as those who avoided milk.

Faltering Industry Credibility The milk-builds-strong-bones claim was not the first to collapse under scrutiny. In 2005, PCRM petitioned the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to examine industry advertising claiming that milk could cause weight loss.

A multimillion-dollar, celebrity-filled ad campaign was based on the findings of a single Tennessee researcher who reported that, in small numbers of people, dieters who included milk in their low-calorie diet plans lost more weight than dieters who left milk out. Other researchers were not able to replicate the finding.

• In India, the Sulabh International Museum of Toilets in New Delhi exhibits all manner of potties. The museum follows the history of toilets dating back to 2,500 B.C. Find out about the first electric chamber pot, which prewarmed the seat. See the medieval porta-potty shaped like a treasure chest. • Curators at the Gladstone Pottery Museum in England opened an exhibit described as a “celebration of the toilet” in 2001. The area surrounding the museum has historically been a hub of pottery and ceramics, and many of the world’s toilet manufacturers are based in the area, making it the perfect spot for a museum exhibit dedicated to the cause. The exhibit, called “Flushed with Pride,” honors Thomas Crapper, a real-life plumber who improved the design of several parts of the toilet but did not actually invent it. There are seven gallery rooms displaying over 150 objects related to the toilet.

It begins with a realistically re-created pit toilet from an 1840s tenement slum, shared w i t h realistically re-created pigs, complete with realistically re-created odors formed by combining various noxious chemicals.

There’s a hands-on interactive gallery which traces the development of the toilet with visitors invited to do some flushing of their own. The collection of Victorian toilets is billed as the most complete showcase of historic toilets on earth. There’s also a gallery devoted to the development of the bathroom, including the story of how color was introduced to bathroom fixtures. • In Wisconsin, the Madison Museum of Bathroom Tissue displayed a collection of toilet paper from the time it opened in 1992 until it closed in 2000. Nearly 3,000 different rolls collected from restrooms all over the world were shown, including TP swiped from such notable places as Ellis Island, Caesar’s Palace, the Alamo, and Graceland. Proudly presented were the “roll of the week” as well as a complete history of T.P. from leaves to Sears catalog to Charmin. There was the European Collection, the African Shelf, and the Mexican Display. The museum is now closed. The paperwork is in storage, awaiting a new home.

The decision also applied to Dairy Management Inc., which was created to increase demand for U.S.produced dairy products on behalf of America’s dairy product producers.

The female calves are often dehorned, typically without anesthesia.

Disconcerting Findings

Calcium is an essential nutrient. But nondairy sources of calcium such as beans, tofu, broccoli, kale, collard greens, breads, cereals, and nondairy, calcium-fortified beverages provide adequate calcium without any of the health, ethical, or environmental detriments associated with milk consumption.

The studies disproving milk’s benefits for bones or weight loss turned out to be the tip of a scientific iceberg. A Harvard study of 20,885 men published in 2001 showed that men having 2 1/2 servings of dairy products daily had a 34 percent increased risk of prostate cancer, compared with men consuming little or no dairy products. A separate Harvard study, this one including 47,871 men, had shown much the same thing—men having two or more milk servings each day had a 60 percent increased risk of prostate cancer.

The scientific issue of most concern to public health officials is the load of fat in dairy products. The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans described the sources of saturated fat—the “bad” fat that leads to heart disease and other health problems—in the American diet. Dairy products turned out to be the biggest source. Typical cheeses are about 70 percent fat, much of which is saturated fat.

Skimming the fat from milk leaves a drink loaded with sugar. Lactose sugar contributes more than 55 percent of skim milk’s calories, giving it a calorie load similar to soda.

Cow’s milk consumption by infants and toddlers is linked to type 1 diabetes and to anemia. As children reach their teen years, many experience cramps and diarrhea due to lactose intolerance. This is especially true for those of African, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, or Mediterranean heritage.

Ethical and Environmental Impacts

A cow on a modern farm may produce more than 20,000 pounds of milk per year. To maintain maximal milk production, farmers impregnate cows annually, inserting one arm into the cow’s rectum while using the other to insert a long metal rod holding semen into the cow’s vagina.

Male calves born through this process cannot join the dairy herd and are placed in crates to be raised as veal.

The 60,000 dairy farms in the United States also contribute methane—the product of ruminant digestion—a greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The production of dairy products generates the third highest level of greenhouse gas emissions of commonly consumed foods.

Forget New Mattress, See Doctor Instead DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have back discomfort upon lying down. It doesn’t matter where I lie or what position I’m in for my back to hurt and often one or both hips. Getting out of bed in the morning is hard and uncomfortable. Once I have had my morning shower and am up and around, I’m fine.

We have thought of replacing our mattress, but how do we find something that will help? What would you recommend? -- M.W. ANSWER: I strongly recommend that you see your family doctor before you invest any money in a mattress.

Some of what you describe fits the picture of osteoarthritis -- stiffness upon wakening, difficulty getting out of bed and relief of symptoms after taking a hot shower. Before you spend a penny on a mattress, have your back examined and the problem diagnosed.

ANSWER: Your question is asked repeatedly. My longdistance guess is a subconjunctival hemorrhage. The conjunctiva is a cellophane-like covering of the eye.

Beneath it is a network of invisible blood vessels. When one of those delicate vessels breaks, blood covers that part of the eye.

Coughing, sneezing or straining causes the breakage.

Sometimes it happens for no apparent reason. The eye looks awful, but no real harm is done. The blood is absorbed in about a week. You can hurry it up by putting warm compresses over the closed eye.

You need to see a doctor if the eye begins to pain you, if the blood stays for longer than a week or if it happens time and again.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How good are prunes for constipation? I am often constipated and have unsuccessfully tried many remedies. They might work for a short while, but then I am constipated again. I’d like to try the prune way, if you say that it works. -- M.A. ANSWER: It works for many, but I can’t give you a guarantee.

Five to six prunes twice a day can change your bowel habits in a week or so.

Prunes have fiber, one reason why they exert a laxative effect. Fiber keeps food waste moist on its passage out of the body. Prunes also contain sorbitol, a natural laxative.

In addition to the laxative action, prunes have antioxidants, substances that counter the bad effects coming from cell chemistry.

Prunes have undergone a name change; they are now called dried plums.

• If you like taking baths, you can invest in a second rubber bath mat to drape over the side of the tub. The edge will be nonslip, so you can hold on for support, and your hands will not slide. • Sunburn happens in the winter, too, especially on the slopes. Use a cotton ball soaked in cold tea to ease tight, dry skin. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your face and wear eye protection when going out in the snow. • For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water. • If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases. • For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in oven for a sturdier skin.

Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven.

Eggplant Pecan Pesto Makes about 3 cups

Here’s a superb dairy-free pesto that is very simple to prepare. It is equally delicious as a dip or topping served at room temperature, or as a warm sauce over pasta or grains.

1/2 cup water, more or less as needed 1 medium onion, diced 1/2 teaspoon crushed garlic 1 large eggplant, peeled 1 cup pecans 1/2 cup firmly packed fresh basil 2 - 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 - 4 tablespoons light miso Heat water in a large non-stick skillet. Add onion and garlic and cook over medium-high heat for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, cut eggplant into 1/2-inch cubes. Add to onion, cover, and reduce heat to medium. Cook, stirring often, until eggplant is very soft, about 25 to 30 minutes.

If necessary, add a little more water to keep eggplant from sticking to pan. When tender, transfer eggplant mixture to blender. Add remaining ingredients and process until completely smooth. Mixture will be thick. Serve immediately while warm or at room temperature. Store leftovers in refrigerator and reheat to serve.

The McGuire Sisters -- Christine, Dorothy and Phyllis - had hit records from 1954-1968. They were forced to retire because of Phyllis’ relationship with mobster Sam Giancana, which got them blacklisted. They made a comeback in 1986, playing Toronto, Las Vegas, Atlantic City and New York.

The Gabor Sisters -- Magda, Zsa Zsa and Eva -- were mostly famous for who they dated and married, though Olivia De Havilland won two Oscars, “To Each His Own” (1946) and “The Heiress” (1949), and her sister Joan Fontaine won for Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Suspicion” (1941). Governments in Broward County and most of the country have been struggling with this question: Should we view clothes recycling boxes as half full (a positive public service) similar to other types of recycling or half empty (a negative public nuisance)? The answer is both.

As they did with trash management and many forms of recycling, New York City is leading the country in solving our problem of mountains of potentially recyclable clothing in landfills. A year ago, New York City (NYC) and a local charity created the re-fashioNYC program. Yet, there could be so much more benefit if only local governments created more accommodating regulations and practices.

Have a group of friends or co-workers that are pet lovers?

When dry, the colored glue will appear translucent.

Carefully peel off the plastic wrap from the sun catcher and discard.

Make these colorful window decorations to brighten your child’s bedroom during gloomy winter days. When the glue has dried, these sun catchers will have the look of stained glass. Help your kids create a design of a character or object from their favorite books and stories.

For me, my favorite odd coupling, if you will, was Oscar Madison and Felix Unger, two more-authentic-than-fiction guys played by Jack Klugman and Tony Randall on stage and screen. They used to call them “The Odd Couple.�

An Odd Coupling I’m not here to say “I told you so.� I am here to give you hyper-accurate insight about your favorite sporting events before they happen ... if at all.

Regular readers of this column could have known -- if they were wise regular readers -- that purchasing a ticket for the BCS Championship game in Miami was a waste of their hard-earned money. It was a bad matchup between Alabama and Notre Dame, particularly if you were on the Irish Catholic side of the equation.

The story goes like this: Felix was kicked out of his house and divorced by his wife ... a divorce Felix did not want.

Felix, a sports photographer, turns to his friend, newspaper sports writer Oscar Madison (also recently divorced), and Oscar agrees to let him crash at his apartment for a while. Felix was anal retentive; Oscar was a slob. Felix was effeminate, while Oscar was the living embodiment of masculinity because he was a sports writer (duh).

The storyline almost always followed the formula of Oscar not necessarily saying he told Felix so ... but that Felix would have been better off if he had been a little more, you know, regular. And since the playwright, Neal Simon, was said to take particular pride in basing his stories on reallife events, the part where the sports writer is always right would seem plausible always.

According to The New York Times, an esteemed daily newspaper who paid somebody to look into the matter, Oscar’s three-bedroom apartment in the 14-story walkup at Central Park West and Park Avenue would be worth $4 million in today’s money. Oscar was likely renting at the monthly rate of $30,000. Again ... $30,000 per month -and that’s before utilities and the party-line phone with the Pigeon sisters. All of that, plus nightly poker games, on newspaper sports writer and photographer’s salary!

But, you regular readers know, as you do get a little more wise, you make your way a bit further down the authentic South Beach experience, you learn that maybe guys like Felix weren’t all that different from the regular guys after all, and that his story maybe rang a bit more true than Oscar’s. Does that say your shouldn’t listen to a sports writer when he tells you so? Of course not. It merely underscores the fact that you should never trust a playwright.
