• According to Greek mythology, there are several stages of human existence on Earth. During the Golden Age, the first race of mortals, dubbed the golden race (meaning good and noble), was created by the gods and held conversations with them. There was an endless abundance of food and no need for agriculture. This age was characterized by peace, harmony, and prosperity. The mortals lived to an old age while maintaining their youthful appearance, and eventually died very peaceful deaths. The Silver Age followed, with the mortals described as foolish and immature, who refused to worship the gods and goddesses. According to mythology, this so angered Zeus, he destroyed the silver race. The mortals of the mythological Bronze Age were hardened and tough, caught up in wars. This race was undone by their own violence. The Heroic Age was the period of heroes who fought at Troy. In the Iron Age, pain and evil ran rampant, with humans living in toil and misery, and with no shame over wrongdoing.

• The period of European history from the 5th to the 15th centuries is referred to as the Middle Ages. It began after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire and the abdication of Romulus Augustus in the year 476. The early Middle Ages were called the Dark Ages, lasting until about 1000, during which time there was a drastic deterioration in cultural development and the economy, as well as an increase in wars. The part of the Middle Ages commonly known as the Medieval Period, began around 1000, and continued until the Renaissance began in the 16th century. Gothic art and architecture appeared during this era.

• The goal of the religious wars known as the Crusades during the Middle Ages was to restore the holy places in Jerusalem. Pope Urban II begged Catholic armies to go to war against Muslim forces in the Holy Land.

• The Age of Discovery started in the early 1400s and continued to the 1600s. Also called the Age of Exploration, it was the time when Europeans began travels in search of new sea trade routes to what they thought were the East Indies. The Portuguese and Spanish dominated the exploration – Vasco da Gama, Magellan, Balboa, Cortes, Ponce de Leon, and, of course, Columbus were the leaders of the more well-known voyages of discovery.

• When the Earth undergoes a long-term reduction in surface and atmospheric temperatures, glaciers and ice sheets may expand. This is known as an ice age, or more accurately, a glacial age. Experts say there have been at least five major ice ages over the Earth’s history. They are probably the result of an interaction between very small changes in the Earth’s orbit, changes in ocean currents, and changes in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. • During the 17th and 18th centuries, the world moved into the Age of Enlightenment, a cultural movement promoted by the intellectuals of that time, such as Isaac Newton and Voltaire. They attempted to lead the world away from superstition, irrationality, and tyranny and toward knowledge through science and reason. It was based on faith in nature and belief in human progress, with hostility toward organized religion and monarchy. The “enlightened” believed that people were naturally good and would work to further the happiness of others.

• The period between 1750 and 1850 was the Industrial Age, when dramatic advances in manufacturing, transportation, and technology produced powerful changes in the economy and culture. The introduction of steam power and improvements in mining created huge advancements. Manufacturing machines allowed mass production of goods.

• The 1920s, commonly called the Roaring Twenties, was a time of economic prosperity and rapid industrial growth.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD:

MARIE CURIE

Often referred to as the “Mother of Modern Physics,” Marie Curie was the first famous woman scientist in the modern world. Here’s your opportunity to learn more about the woman who made many significant contributions to the research of radioactivity.

• Born in Poland in 1867 to a physics teacher father and an educator mother, Marie enrolled at the Sorbonne in Paris for her higher education. She graduated first in the class of physics and in second place in mathematics, and immediately began work as a researcher.

• Alongside her fellow researcher husband, Pierre Curie, the pair studied the elements and radioactivity. Marie was the first to discover radioactivity in an element, thorium.

She and Pierre went on to discover two new elements, polonium (which she named for her native Poland) and radium. As a result of her 1903 dissertation on radium, she was awarded a doctorate in science, the first ever for a woman in all of Europe. The Curies received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for their work, and Marie became the first woman to be awarded this prestigious prize. Their prize winnings were poured back into their research.

• The year 1904 was an eventful one for Marie – she was awarded a professorship at the Sorbonne, established the use of radiation therapy for cancer, and gave birth to her second child. Just two years later, Pierre was run over by a horse-drawn carriage in Paris and died, leaving Marie a widow at age 37 with two young daughters to raise alone.

Shortly afterward, she was awarded Pierre’s department chair position at the Sorbonne, becoming the first woman ever to hold a chair there, and the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne. Although she was offered a national pension following Pierre’s death, she declined it.

• Marie’s second Nobel Prize came along in 1911, this time in the field of Chemistry, for her isolation of pure radium. This set her apart as the only woman to win the Nobel Prize in two different fields up to that date. This time, Marie donated her prize money toward equipping World War I ambulances with portable X-ray machines, as well as establishing 200 permanent X-ray stations in France and Belgium.

• The laboratories of the Radium Institute at the University of Paris opened in 1914, and the Curie Foundation was established in 1920 to work toward applying radium in medical procedures. Marie’s daughter Irene joined her • In 1900, a prairie dog colony was found in Texas. That’s not surprising -- prairie dogs are fairly common out West -- but this colony was unique. Researchers say it was the largest colony ever discovered, providing a home to 400 million prairie dogs and stretching over 25,000 square miles.

• Those who study such things say that if you drink 100 cups of coffee in a row, it’s likely to kill you.

• Martin Van Buren was the first president to be born a citizen of the United States.

• You might have heard that George Washington’s dentures were made of wood, but in fact, they were made of hippopotamus ivory.

• To earn a world record, a woman named Sonya Thomas ate 65 hard-boiled eggs in 6 minutes, 40 seconds.

In 1934, her daughter Irene and her husband discovered artificial radioactivity, an accomplishment for which they received a Nobel Prize in 1935. Unfortunately, Marie did not live to see her daughter’s award. Seemingly unaware of the effects of radioactivity on human health during all her years of research, Marie contracted leukemia, most likely due to her prolonged exposure. She died a few months after Irene’s discovery. Sadly, Irene developed leukemia as well and died from the effects of radiation exposure. The Curies’ notebooks recording their research remain so radioactive today that they still cannot be handled without protection, and are stored in lead-lined boxes.

• The name Curie is a household word among scientists, as it is used as the name of the unit of measure for radioactivity

Vegetarian Diet Reduces Risk of Heart Disease Vegetarians have a lower risk of heart disease, according to a new study in the March issue of American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers followed 44,561 men and women in England and Scotland and found that the vegetarians were 32 percent less likely to be hospitalized or die from heart disease, compared with those who ate meat products (red meat, poultry, and fish). The vegetarians were also slimmer and had lower total cholesterol and blood pressure.

A diet high in fruits and vegetables can improve mood, according to a new study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology. Dietary data from 281 New Zealanders between the ages of 18 and 25 were collected over a 21day period. The more fruits and vegetables the participants ate, the calmer, happier, and more energetic they felt.

The authors noted the mood improvements followed the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables and not vice versa. Investigators sought to expand on previous research that explored the association between eating unhealthful foods, such as sugary and fatty foods, and negative emotional states.

ANSWER: What makes salt (sodium, sodium chloride) a danger to health is its tendency to raise blood pressure.

We need only 500 mg of salt a day, yet we take in more than five times that amount. Salt’s contribution to the elevation of blood pressure is something that people can alter without resorting to medicines. Salt does contribute to fluid retention. ANSWER: Lactase is an enzyme found in the small intestine. It digests lactose, milk sugar. Infants of all animal species are born with a good supply of the lactase enzyme. They lose their supply of lactase at the time they are weaned from their mother’s milk. Most humans hold onto an adequate supply of lactase into adult life.

Some, however, have so little that they find dairy products impossible to digest. Dairy products bloat these people, give them stomach cramps and can bring on diarrhea.

That’s lactase deficiency or lactose intolerance. Both terms denote the same problem. The lactase deficiency is an ethnic trait. Blacks, Asian-Americans and Native Americans have less lactase in adulthood than do whites.

Age causes the lactase supply to dwindle. That’s the reason you have more trouble at age 61 than you did years ago.

Cheeses and yogurt are exceptions to the rule. Many lactase-deficient people tolerate them well.

Florida Vegetable Pasta Stew Ingredients: 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 medium Florida onion, finely chopped 1 Florida green or red pepper, chopped 2 small Florida eggplants, cubed (add 1/4 cup for baby) 1 small Florida zucchini, cubed (add 1/4 cup for baby) 1 bay leaf 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 2 cups chopped Florida tomatoes with their juice salt and pepper 1 pound pasta (your favorite) 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese

Add the pepper and cook 2 minutes more. Add the eggplant and cook 2 more minutes.

Add the zucchini, garlic, bay leaf and oregano. Season lightly with salt and pepper and continue to cook for 2 more minutes.

Add the tomatoes and simmer for 40 minutes, uncovered.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of well-salted water to a boil.

Add the pasta and cook until firm, about 12 minutes.

Toss the hot pasta with the stew mixture and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Adjust the salt and pepper to taste.

For Baby Before adding zucchini to steps 2 and 3 remove 1/4 cup for baby and steam until tender. Place in food grinder and puree. Freeze any extra portion in ice cube tray for use later.

Yield: 4 Servings

Preparation: Heat the oil in a 4-quart sauce pot over medium heat. Add the onion and cook until soft and translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes.

What if you can’t access the underside of the floor? This is where you’ll need to roll back the carpet and address the boards from above.

Permanently Silence a Squeaky Floor Q: The floor squeaks loudly when I walk over a couple of spots in my living room. I read somewhere that you can stop these squeaks by sprinkling talcum powder between the boards. But my floor is covered by carpet. Is there any other way to fix the squeaks? -- Squeaking Mad in Memphis A: Talcum powder is a good temporary fix for squeaky floorboards (as noted in my new book, “101 Best Home Repair Tips,� available from Amazon). But eventually the squeaks come back anyway. If you’re not inclined to pull back the carpet repeatedly to apply powder between the boards, try a more permanent solution.

Do you have access to the underside of the living room floor, such as in the basement or the crawlspace under the house? If so, you either shim the nearest joist or secure the subflooring to the squeaky boards to reduce the noise.

To shim the floor, have a helper walk around the living room while you listen below for squeaks, and mark the noisy areas. Next, mark the joists (the large boards running perpendicular to the floorboards underneath the floor) on either side of the squeaky area. Coat a shim (a thin wedge of wood, available at most home-improvement stores) with a thin layer of wood glue, and hammer the shim into the gap between the joist and the subfloor on each side of the squeak. You may need to add a couple of shims on each side, and have your helper test the area each time.

If that doesn’t completely rid your floor of squeaks, try attaching the subfloor to the floorboards in the squeaky area more tightly. You do this by driving wood screws through the subfloor layer into the bottom of the floorboards. Be

To avoid marring the floorboards, hammer finishing nails between the squeaking boards, angling them so that they go into one edge of one of the boards. The nails should be flush with the floorboards. Space them a few inches apart along the squeaky area.

If that doesn’t do it, you can secure the floorboard to the subflooring from above. This will mar the board, as you’ll need to drive a finishing nail (or if necessary, a wood screw) directly through the center of the squeaky floorboard into the subflooring. Use a nail set or another nail to drive the finishing nail slightly below the wood’s surface. Then cover it with wood filler whose color matches the color of the floorboard.

Florida’s Agricultural Heritage in Paintings

by Robert Butler Florida Department of Agriculture Promoting Public Awareness

The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services works to help increase public awareness of agriculture’s central role in Florida history as well as its continued importance today. Back in 1999, with the approach of the new millennium, the Department launched its “New Millennium Agri-Literacy Campaign.” To help with this project, the Department tapped the creativity and historical insight of renowned naturalist painter Robert Butler, who created 12 historic artistic depictions of Florida’s agricultural heritage. These paintings were featured at several exhibits from 2000 to 2003, including Florida House in Washington, D.C., and the Florida State Fair in Tampa. They are now on permanent display in the Commissioner of Agriculture’s office in The Capitol in Tallahassee.

At first blush, 49ers running back Frank Gore’s post-game comments about the 49ers being the better team, that the Ravens got away with one, seemed like poor sportsmanlike whining. At least that’s what I thought until I saw the stat comparison. The 49ers had more first downs, more yards from scrimmage, more passing yards, more rushing yards, more average yards per pass and rush and, arguably, more heart. What can’t be argued is that the Ravens scored more points.

3. Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco was not the most valuable player in the game.

1. It was not the most exciting Super Bowl in history.

Flacco was definitely the better of the two quarterbacks, but you can make a more convincing case that 49ers quarterback Colin Caepernick did more to lose the game than Flacco did to win it. Caepernick failed to spot a wideopen Randy Moss at least twice during the game. Granted, Flacco played a helluva game. He was rocketing passes sideline to sideline with increasing speed and accuracy and was unstoppable on third down.

Of all the questions from the game, that was the easiest one to answer: “If you want it, you better put a ring on it.”
