• In 1914, just before the start of WWI, a German mother took a photo of her baby son. Film plates at that time were sold individually. She dropped the plate off in Strasbourg to be developed, but because the war started, she was never able to retrieve it. Two years later in Frankfurt, she bought another film plate to photograph her new baby daughter. When it was developed, she found it was a double exposure. The picture underneath was that of her small son. Somehow the plate had become mixed in with a pile of undeveloped film.

• It was a hot evening in June in El Paso, Texas when patrolman Allen Falby accidentally crashed his motorcycle into a speeding truck.

MOTHER BICKERDYKE Born in Ohio in 1817 and widowed at 42, Mary Ann Bickerdyke had to earn her own way in life. Because she had studied some medicine, she hung out a shingle advertising herself as a Botanic Physician. Her neighbors found that she was handy with the sick and they gladly paid her for caring for their ills, which led to a lifetime of helping others.

• After the start of the Civil War, Mary heard a sermon preached by the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin. She was horrified, not by the facts of slavery, but by the preacher’s description of the Union troops. They had not even seen battle yet, but they were dying of dysentery, pneumonia, and typhoid. The congregation raised $500 for the support of the soldiers, and they elected Mary Bickerdyke to deliver the money to troops in Cairo, Illinois.

• When she arrived at the army stockade, she was shocked at the conditions. The make-shift hospital grounds were filthy and crowded.

Instead of simply delivering her gifts and returning home, Mary Ann Bickerdyke commenced cleaning up the camp. She provided hot meals, hot baths, clean clothing, new sheets, and fresh mattresses. The men began calling her Mother, and Mother Bickerdyke she remained for the rest of her days.

• Writing home, she asked her friends to send supplies. She was most concerned about feeding sick soldiers. The Army allotted the sick identical rations as the healthy. This did not seem fair to her. So when packages of goodies arrived for individual men, she confiscated them and passed out the goodies to the people who needed them most.

ARCTIC EXPLORERS When European explorers informed the native Dene Indians of the Northwest Territories that explorer Alexander Mackenzie had “found” the river that now bears his name, the Indians replied that they didn’t know the river had ever been lost.

SHIP OF FOOLS • Martin Frobisher sailed from England past Greenland in the year 1576 in search of the Northwest Passage. He ran into trouble with the native Eskimo and turned for home, taking samples of ore-bearing rocks he found on the shore. In England, a chemist announced it was gold ore. Frobisher mounted a second expedition, feeling that gold was more important than the Northwest Passage. He spent the summer of 1577 on Baffin Island, loading three ships with 200 tons of rock.

Back in England, scientists exclaimed over how much gold the rocks bore— so Frobisher headed back again, this time with 15 ships. He brought home 1,350 tons of ore this time, and smelters in England spent five years trying without success trying to extract gold from it. Only then did they discover the “gold” was actually iron pyrite— fool’s gold. It was worthless.

GHOST SHIP • On August 11, 1775, a Greenland whaling ship called the Herald found itself in a sea full of icebergs in gale force winds. By morning, the weather cleared. Suddenly another ship came into view. As they neared it, the whalers saw that the unknown ship was covered with ice and no humans were on deck. They received no answers to their hails. The captain lowered a longboat and went to investigate, accompanied by eight men. As they approached the derelict ship, they saw that her name was the Octavius.

Boarding, they found no sign of life.

The captain of the Octavius had decided to look for the yet undiscovered Northwest Passage through the Arctic instead of sailing home all the way around South America. The ship, locked in the ice, sailed on even after the demise of the crew— and became the first ship ever to negotiate the elusive Northwest Passage. Her crew for the journey was a captain and crew who had been dead for 13 years. Today the logbook of the Octavius is in the archives of the Registrar of Shipping in London.

Multivitamin Intake Yields Mixed Results

More Evidence That Red and Processed Meats Are Deadly People who consume the most red and processed meat are at higher risk for an early death, according to a study published this week. Data from 448,568 men and women in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study showed that, during the average 12.7 year follow-up period, eating red meat and processed meat increased the risk of dying by 14 and 44 percent, respectively, compared with those who ate the least amount. These findings support Harvard’s 2012 published study also showing red and processed meat is linked to premature death.

Dairy Linked to Acne Development Dairy products and foods with a high glycemic index are the leading causes of acne, according to a review published in the March issue of theJournal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Researchers examined the evidence between acne and diet and found that certain products, particularly

After an average 11-year follow-up, researchers from Harvard’s Physicians’ Health Study II found a modest reduction in risk for total cancer among 14,641 men who took a multivitamin. The benefit was seen both among men who were cancer survivors and men who had never had cancer.

When looking at the same group of men taking multivitamins, researchers found no benefit for heart health.

I also had vasculitis (Henoch-Schonlein purpura). I haven’t experienced any symptoms for a couple of years. I have been feeling nauseated and have had loose BMs and the odd stomachache. A red spot appeared on my leg a few days ago. Do you think the vasculitis is playing a role in my delay in recovery? -- J.B. ANSWER: I’ll describe the typical pain of sciatica, and you see if the description fits your pain. The sciatic nerve is the body’s largest and longest nerve. It travels from the lower back, down the leg to the ankle or foot. Pressure on the nerve from a protruding back disk, a bone spur or anything that compresses the nerve brings on sharp or burning pain running down the side and back of the leg

Vasculitis is an inflammation of blood vessels, and HenochSchonlein (HE-knock SURN-line) purpura is one kind of vasculitis. Children get this illness more than adults do.

Red blotches that turn into bruises (purpura) pop up on the buttocks and legs. Joint pain, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea (or constipation) also arise. In the first year after recovery, relapses are common.

If your current stomach troubles worsen or you see more red blotches, get back to the doctor who took care of you before. I don’t believe that HS, if it is returning, is interfering with your recovery from sciatica.

Spinach Turnovers Makes 16 turnovers

These turnovers are surprisingly quick and easy to prepare using frozen spinach and whole-wheat tortillas.

3 10-ounce packages frozen chopped spinach, thawed 1/4 cup water 1 onion, finely chopped 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 1/2 teaspoons dried dill weed 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 cup lemon juice 8 large flour tortillas 1 tablespoon olive oil Squeeze as much water as possible from thawed spinach and set aside.

Heat water in a large skillet, then add onion and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.

Stir in parsley, dill, salt, pepper, and spinach. Cook over medium heat, stirring often until very dry. Stir in lemon juice.

Preheat oven to 375°F. To assemble, cut a tortilla in half and moisten edges with water, using your fingers or a pastry brush. Place about 2 tablespoons of filling in the center of each half, then fold it in thirds, matching curves to make a triangular shape.

Press edges firmly to seal. Brush lightly with olive oil.

Place on a baking sheet and bake until lightly browned, about 25 minutes.

Orange-Oat Pancakes Makes about 16 small pancakes

These light and fluffy pancakes have a delicate orange flavor that is nicely complemented by Apple-Maple Fusion Topping.

1 1/3 cups whole-wheat flour 2/3 cup old-fashioned rolled oats 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup fortified soy- or rice milk 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 3 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed (undiluted) 1 oil Combine flour, oats, baking powder, and baking soda in a medium bowl. In a separate bowl whisk together nondairy milk, applesauce, and juice concentrate. Pour into dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon. Batter will be slightly lumpy. Oil a large non-stick skillet and place over medium-high heat. Spoon batter into hot skillet using 2 level tablespoons for each pancake. Cook until bottoms are brown, adjusting heat as necessary. Cook second side briefly, just until golden. Lightly oil skillet between batches to prevent sticking.

Top Ten Mistakes Made Trying To Qualify for Medicaid Nursing Home Benefits Some people try to plan for Medicaid without the aid of an attorney experienced in Medicaid planning. This can cause them to make one or more of the following mistakes.

Interviews with new clients in South Florida made me realize these are common mistakes: #10. Improper establishment or maintenance of a Qualified Income Trust (QIT). A QIT is necessary to hold the patient’s income when his gross income is $2,130, or more. Only the excess over $2,130 needs to go into the Trust. Sometimes a relative agrees to enter into such a trust, but does not create it and fund it during the first month for which eligibility is sought. This disqualifies the Medicaid applicant for that month. Another common mistake is executing the Trust on behalf of the patient without having a durable power of attorney, defeating the trust’s purposes. If the patient is declared to be incompetent, the circuit court judge must approve the trust’s creation. #9. Failing to determine if the nursing home accepts Medicaid benefits. If you apply for a nursing home which does not accept Medicaid, getting Medicaid approved will do you no good. Others require as much as a 12 month period during which you must pay privately. #8. Thinking the $13,000 gift tax exclusion applies to Medicaid planning. Estate planning attorneys frequently remind clients that they can gift up to $13,000 per recipient for each year without paying federal tax gift. This is true, but it has nothing to do with establishing eligibility for Medicaid. Such gifts will cause a loss of Medicaid. #7. Believing that Medicare pays for long term nursing home costs. Medicare is easily confused with Medicaid.

Both provide health benefits. Only Medicaid pays for long-term nursing care. Medicare pays up to a maximum of 100 days, and frequently less than that.

#6. Failing to list all assets, income, and gifts within a 60 month period prior to filing the Request For Assistance for Medicaid. This is a serious crime. There is a 60 month look back period which might include gifts that would delay eligibility for Medicaid benefits. Failing to notify Florida’s Department of Children and Families (D-CAF) within 10 days following any changes in assets or income is also a violation of law. #5. Failing to include all gross income of an applicant when applying for benefits. The test is the gross income.

For example, listing the amount of Social Security direct deposited into your checking account will not include the $104.90 automatically deducted (in 2013) for the Medicaid part B premium. Private pensions sometimes also have a gross income different from the net that is direct-deposited.

You need to prove the gross amount to Dept. of Children and Families (D-CAF) by getting a letter from the provider of the private pension. D-CAF will not approve the case without such written proof.

#4. Failing to plan for the possibility that the community spouse might predecease the institutionalized spouse.

Many people have wills leaving all assets to the surviving spouse. Such a will would cause the institutionalized spouse to lose eligibility for Medicaid if the community spouse dies first, leaving the patient’s assets in excess of the $2,000 asset limit. #3. Relying on out-dated or poorly drafted durable powers of attorney or other estate planning documents. A durable power of attorney that does not include the right to access all medical information of the patient is a mistake. Otherwise, access to medical records will be denied because of “HIPAA”, which became effective after most present day durable powers of attorney were drafted. Failing to include the specific authority to give gifts to a family member and to enter in to a personal service contract with the holder of the power of attorney are other mistakes. Such omissions can limit your Medicaid planning options. #2. Transferring assets without taking into account the transfer rules and penalties. Any gift within 60 months of seeking Medicaid benefits can potentially delay the eligibility for Medicaid. Any transfer made without fair market value can become a problem. For example, selling a home to a relative for less than fair market value can be a gift, to the extent of the difference between the fair value and the actual price paid. #1. Transferring the homestead realty to children or others by way of a quit-claim deed. This is one of the worst and most common mistakes made in planning for Medicaid.

Because the homestead is a non-countable asset if the owner intends to return, doing nothing is sometimes the best policy. Quit-claiming the home to a relative can cause a delay in eligibility. For example gifting a $100,000 home to a non-spouse will delay eligibility for almost 2 years!

Mistakes can be expensive. If you lose one month’s eligibility, you must pay for that month out of your pocket. This can cost $6,000 to $7,000 in nursing home expenses for each month that you do not meet Medicaid’s requirements! *See our ad on Page 3

The Passover holiday, also known as “The Feast of the Unleavened Bread,” commemorates the Jewish exodus from Egypt and their freedom from slavery. Matzoh, an unleavened type of bread, is traditionally eaten during Passover. Matzoh also is called “poor man’s bread.” It is eaten during the holiday as a reminder to be humble, to always appreciate freedom and to not forget what life was like as slaves in Egypt.

Matzoh bread is similar to the type of bread eaten by the Hebrews during ancient times. The most common type of matzoh is hard and cracker-like, although there is a soft matzo that is similar in texture to a flat bread. Modern types of matzoh include onion flavored, whole-wheat and gluten-free.

My Spinach and Matzoh Pie recipe transforms the bread into a texture similar to phyllo dough by soaking it for 15 minutes. The Pie can be assembled (but not baked) 1 day ahead, covered and refrigerated. It also can be eaten hot or at room temperature, making it the perfect dish to take along when traveling to a Passover dinner.

5. Stack matzos in a deep dish and pour reserved cheese mixture over them. Let stand 15 minutes to soften. Soaking allows the matzos to absorb the flavors and the moisture helps keep exposed matzo ends from burning.

6. Arrange 2 soaked matzos side by side in a generously oiled 13- by 9- by 2-inch (3-quart shallow) baking dish.

Pour in half of spinach filling. Cover with 2 more matzos, then pour in remaining filling. Put remaining 2 matzos on top and pour any remaining cheese mixture over them.

Sprinkle with remaining 1/2 cup feta.

7. Bake, uncovered, until golden and set, 30 to 35 minutes.

Cool 10 to 15 minutes to allow dish to set up. Serve sprinkled with remaining 2 tablespoons dill or parsley.

Oscar night has become a feeding frenzy, literally. You have to be ready to walk the red carpet by 3 p.m. Celebrities walk the endless carpet from 30 minutes to an hour. By the time the press people have covered the red carpet and head to the pressroom, they’ve been inside a hurricane for about two and a half hours.

“Jacked Up.” Years ago, I became friends with a neighbor, Adrian Paul, who became a regular on the “Dynasty” spin-off “The Colbys.” He later starred in 117 episodes of “Highlander” and 22 episodes of “Tracker.” Adrian told me, “It was all a lot easier back then, so much has changed in the industry.”

My big moment of the night came when Eric Roberts (brother of Julia Roberts), an Oscar nominee for “Runaway Train,” asked me who designed my tuxedo. I told him it was by Emanuel Ungaro, and then said, “Hey, that was supposed to be my line!” (c) 2013 King Features Synd., Inc.

Behind the scenes, winners and presenters are paraded through rooms filled with press, often missing the show itself. Then, once the show ends some four hours later, you have to cover the parties.

Most winners, presenters and stars stop by the official Oscar ball, in The Dolby Theatre complex, and then race off to either Elton John’s party, which raises millions for AIDS, or the Vanity Fair party, which is small and very exclusive. George Clooney, Ben Affleck and Jane Fonda skipped those parties in favor of a private one of their own at Craig’s, the hot new West Hollywood in-spot where Clooney often goes.

This year, I passed on that craziness to attend Norby Walters’ Oscar viewing party, Night of 100 Stars, at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I arrived at 3:30 p.m. and spent the first 45 minutes with Terry Moore (best remembered for “Mighty Joe Young”) at the cocktail party. Terry told me how she proved she was once married to billionaire Howard Hughes: “Howard knew people wouldn’t believe we were secretly married once, so he made recordings, in his own voice, in which he referred to me as his wife.”

When I went into the attic to check it out, I found that the sheathing is mostly rotted. What are his options? He’s on a fixed income, and this repair looks expensive. -- Rick in Portsmouth, N.H. ®

A: Unfortunately, it sounds like an expensive repair. The rotted sheathing will need to be removed and replaced, and if the damage is extensive, a complete roof replacement may be needed.

The first step is to contact a roof inspector or roofing contractor to view the damage and to look for additional problems in the roof structure. While you’re waiting for the inspection, protect the interior of the house from potential water damage while you and your dad figure this out.

Working from the attic for safety, affix a lightweight sheet of plywood against the hole your dad accidentally punched in the roof, using screws rather than nails to try and hold the plywood against the weakened sheathing. Keep in mind that this is not a long-term fix, but a temporary solution to keep rainwater out for a few days until stronger protection measures can be put in place.

Shingles Are Least of Roof’s Problems

Get a written report of the extent of damage from the inspector or contractor. If the contractor wants to repair the roof, ask for a written estimate. It’s a good idea to call in two or three contractors and get written estimates from each before deciding whom to hire.

Q: My dad is pretty stubborn about doing home repairs himself. A couple days ago, however, I found out that his roof has some serious problems. He’s been patching up leaks in the roof by just slapping a couple of shingles over problem spots as they crop up. Yesterday he called and said

BOTTLE CAP CLACKERS On a 2-inch-by-8inch length of sanded wood, set two metal bottle caps on top of each other, and drive a nail through the bottle caps and part way into the wood.

Be sure to leave room for the bottle caps to rattle. Make a row of two or more sets. Paint the wood, if you wish.

Just dip into your recycle bin for some plastic bottles, snatch some mismatched mittens leftover from winter wear, and with some basic art supplies, you’ll be set to craft your own percussion instruments.

What sports team seriously makes decisions based on wider concourses anyway? And don’t tell me it’s so they can add more vending. There’s plenty of vending already.

Give Them What They Want Seeing as how sporting events are “games” first and money foremost, wouldn’t it be great if the fans actually got what they wanted out of the deal?

In recent years, my favorite “nope, that’s not what I wanted” complaint has centered around stadia. Let me get this straight ... the taxpayers footed the bill for this stadium improvement, and I’m still expected to pee in a trough?

And I particularly love the whole argument regarding “downtown revitalization” when it comes to stadium building. Folks ... I don’t care what Denver says about how its downtown sprung to hipster heaven after building downtown. The argument is flawed. What, exactly, has been revitalized?

Some may argue that it removed an industrial eyesore by replacing it with a shiny new stadium. OK, fair enough. But in places like Philadelphia, was John Fitzgerald Kennedy Municipal Stadium really an eyesore?

The whole “economic revitalization” argument is nonsense, too. When Atlanta Fulton County Stadium was torn down after the 1996 Olympics, the brand-new Olympic Stadium was converted into what is now Turner Field. Sure, tax receipts went up there due to vending, but it’s chickenwing economics. Figure it out for yourself: The game starts at 7 p.m. Most Americans work until 5 p.m. Then they fight traffic, find parking and maybe hit a bar for a few beers and some chicken wings for an hour or so. The game ends at 10 p.m. They’re tired and just spent an average of $197 during their visit, according to Team Marketing Report. Now what? Hang out in the empty downtown a bit longer?

A: Since wowing her fans during two separate runs on “Dancing With the Stars,” Kirstie is taking that momentum to TV Land, where she’ll star in a new sitcom, “Kirstie’s New Show,” beginning this fall. According to the network, the show “revolves around Madison ‘Maddie’ Banks (played by Kirstie), a renowned Broadway star who finds her life turned upside down when Arlo, the son she gave up at birth, suddenly appears hoping to connect after his adoptive parents have died.” The show co-stars Kirstie’s fellow “Cheers” alumnus, Rhea Perlman.

I was once asked by a promotions manager of a ball club for any ideas regarding future promotions. I suggested “baseball night.” I was about to explain to her how great it would be to go to a game and just, you know, see the game.

Can the explosions after every pitch ... but she was long gone, dancing the Macarena, pointing to the scoreboard out in centerfield.

“Don’t you love ‘kiss cam?’ We should do this every inning!”

So, to rephrase, give them what they want ... but please let “they” be actual fans of the game. The money will always be there, foremost.
