Ocean & Intracoastal Experts STIRLING REAL ESTATE

by Patricia L. Cook

Stirling Ambrose Local Broker, Owner

At this time of year, C h r i s t m a s t r e e s , evergreen wreaths, garland and more are displayed all around us. This Tidbits examines some fascinating facts about evergreens.

3505 S. Ocean Drive 3A Hollywood

• Most people only think of conifers like pine, fir, cedar and spruce trees when they think of the term “evergreen.” This is not incorrect because most conifers qualify as evergreens, but many additional plants that are not conifers are evergreens as well. Evergreens have “foliage that persists and remains green throughout the year.” • The word “conifer” comes from the Latin words conus (cone) and ferre (to bear). The word conifer literally means “cone bearing.” While many conifers are evergreen, some are not. Larches and bald cypress trees are conifers that lose their needles every fall. • There are thousands of species of evergreen trees, shrubs and smaller plants. Just within the pine family there are 115 species. While pines and many other evergreens have needle-like foliage, some have leaves, fronds (ferns and palms) and other types of foliage.

EVERGREEN (continued): • Even though the name implies it, evergreens are not always green. Many evergreens actually have foliage that is red, brown, yellow and other colors. • Some popular evergreens not previously mentioned are: hemlock, laurel, holly, eucalyptus, rhododendron, magnolia, palm, juniper and redwood. Even some oaks are evergreen. • Evergreens are found in hot and cold, humid and dry climates on every continent but Antarctica. • Goose Island State Park in Aransas County in southern Texas is the home of the “Big Tree.” Named the State Champion Coastal Live Oak in 1969, this tree is thought to be one of the largest in America. The large evergreen oak is estimated to be over 1,000 years old, has a circumference of 35 feet (10.7 m), is 44 feet (13.4 m) tall and has a crown spread of 90 feet (27.4 m). Live oaks are known for their massive spread, and there are many in the Southern states around old historic homes. This Texas tree is truly impressive. • Washington, the only state named after a president, is famous for its rainy weather and large forests of evergreen trees. Nicknamed the “Evergreen State,” western Washington actually has rain forests in the Olympic Mountains. • Evergreen Point Bridge between Seattle and the eastern shore of Lake Washington is the longest floating bridge in the world. It was built with a line of concrete pontoons linked by cables and attached to ordinary bridges on each end. The total length of the bridge is 7,578 feet (2310 m). It was constructed this way because the bottom of Lake Washington is too muddy for a standard bridge. The bridge contributed greatly to the growth of the eastern shore, with cities like Bellevue and Redmond. (These cities contribute a lot of “green” to the Washington economy thanks to companies like computer giant Microsoft being located there.) • Most evergreen Christmas trees are not harvested from forests. In fact, 98 percent of the trees sold on holiday lots are grown on tree farms. Areas close to national forests with permit programs for cutting down live trees do have quite a following of folks who like to snowshoe or hike to

get their trees, but the Christmas tree lots definitely corner the market on sales. • According to the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA), there are currently 350 million Christmas trees growing on tree farms in the United States. All of the 50 states and Canada produce Christmas trees. The top producing states are Oregon, North Carolina, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Washington. • The most common evergreens used for Christmas trees are balsam fir, Douglas fir, Fraser fir, noble fir, Scotch pine and white pine. • The Christmas tree for the White House has been presented to the First Lady by the NCTA member that wins the National Christmas Tree Contest each year since 1966 when Lyndon Johnson was president. The tree is presented shortly after Thanksgiving to be displayed in the Blue Room at the White House. The tree must be 18.5 feet (5.6 m) tall and fit through a doorway that is 58 inches (1.47 m) wide. • The National Christmas Tree is a live tree in Washington, D.C., that is lit each year at the start of ongoing ceremonies called the “Christmas Pageant of Peace.” The beautiful evergreen tree is a Colorado blue spruce that was transplanted from York, Pennsylvania, in 1978. The tree was the perfect size and shape, had no disease and was growing in similar soil conditions to what it would be living in at its new home in Washington. • The tree was originally a Mother’s Day gift to Mrs. William E. Myers in York. When National Park Service (NPS) employees asked the Myers family about donating the tree, they agreed. Mrs. Myers even fed the workers homemade soup as they prepared “her” tree to become the nation’s tree. • The National Christmas Tree is located in the Ellipse, which is part of President’s Park near the White House. All of the area surrounding the White House, its grounds, including the Ellipse, Lafayette Park, Sherman Park and more have been part of the National Park System since 1933. • The first National Christmas Tree was not a live tree but was also an evergreen. The President of Middlebury College in Vermont, President Calvin Coolidge’s home state, donated a 48-foot (14.6 m) balsam fir to be placed on the Ellipse in December 1923. This “first” tree was cut down and sent to Washington. President Coolidge flipped the switch to light the tree on Christmas Eve. • Washington, D.C., is also home to another famous Christmas tree. The Capitol Christmas Tree, also known as the “People’s Tree,” has been harvested from one of the country’s national forests since 1969. Staff at the National Forest Service headquarters work with national forests’ staffs across the country to select a well-shaped evergreen tree, with the final decision made by the Architect of the Capitol. • It is a huge honor, and many celebrations take place in

the state chosen to send the Capitol Christmas tree to the nation’s capitol. The 2011 tree was sent from the Stanislaus National Forest near Sonora, California. The tree traveled about 4,500 miles (7242 km) on its journey to stand at a place of honor for many Americans and others to see.

The Gift of Empowerment DEAR HAMMER: My daughter moved into her first home this fall, and I want to give her a gift that will truly be useful. What I’d like her to know is the feeling one gets after successfully tackling a difficult home repair, like a leaky faucet or a broken window pane. So I’m putting together a basic toolkit, most of which is in a rust-resistant toolbox, and wrapping it all in a pink bow. Here are some of the items I’m including for her: --A claw hammer and a ball peen hammer, and several small boxes of nails. --A set of screwdrivers with removable bits in different sizes and shapes, and a ratchet screwdriver with interchangeable bits. --Pliers: one slip-joint and one locking pair of pliers, and a 10-inch adjustable wrench for big bolts. Also, a wire cutter. --My favorite item: a cordless rechargeable power drill. --A flexible steel tape measure and a combination laser level-stud finder. --A general-purpose handsaw for cutting wood, and a 10inch hacksaw to cut metal. --Putty knives in different widths. --A metal file, a wood rasp, sandpaper block and assorted sandpaper sheets. --A wire brush and a nylon brush. --Duct tape, electrical tape and painter’s masking tape.

They went off to Hamburg before they became famous, honed their craft by playing jet-fueled all-night sets and returned to Liverpool as stars.

--Scissors, a pocket knife and a utility knife. --Safety goggles, leather work gloves and a filter mask with replaceable filters.

Sounds easy, right? Of course, the notion is pretty much absurd. If that were the case, every minor league baseball player would be in the show and everyone down at the country club would be competing in the Ryder Cup.

I hope your readers like this list! I’ve enjoyed being able to handle minor repairs around the house on my own, and I can’t wait to pass on this tradition. -- Joyce G., Kansas City, Mo. DEAR JOYCE: That’s a fantastic starter kit and a great gift idea! Your daughter likely will appreciate it even more knowing that it came from you and that you put thought into the items she’ll need for most repairs.

Nature or Nuture? Scouts say you can pick them out when they’re little kids.

Being able to handle minor repairs and emergencies gives “The rest of the good playing kids in little league are one a great sense of empowerment -- something the hottest hitting a respectable .300, and then there’s that one kid electronics or latest fashions can’t impart. Kudos for putting hitting .700 with a dinger each game,” one such scout told together a wonderful gift. me. “We can see the kid’s already gonna be a pro, and he’s not even in high school yet.”

HOME TIP: To prevent a metal file or wood rasp’s teeth from clogging up, rub the file or rasp with chalk before starting a job.

Maybe he’s got a hitch in his swing. Perhaps he’s unsuited for the position he’s currently playing. Doesn’t matter. “Everybody is coachable,” a coach once told me. “But the player has to respond to the coach, or you can forget it.”

Heck, Reggie Jackson couldn’t get a guaranteed spot in the Yankee lineup underneath Billy Martin. There was a theory making the rounds a few years ago that posited anybody can attain expert level in just about anything if they spend 10,000 hours or more practicing that particular craft. If you spent every waking hour practicing, every day, that would come to about two to three years. For a more reasonable timeframe, let’s just say it’s five to six years. One of the examples they used was The Beatles.

With the exception of tennis players, quarterbacks, switchhitting baseball players and, for whatever reason, Chinese violinists -- players who had parents who really take the time to drill them (which is why the coach’s kid is usually one of the best players on the team) -- most people practice what it is they’re truly talented at. There can be late bloomers, sure ... for instance, I recently had an epiphany that led me to begin playing the guitar. A friend of mine said something that clicked, taught me the A chord, and I was off and running. Now, I can confidently say that I am at the expert level at guitar, so long as you only want to hear “Wild Thing,” by The Troggs. My kid is 2. He wants to be a drummer. So I bought him some maracas and told him the ottoman was a drum, have at it. I’ll let you know in another 9,000 hours how that’s working out. PECAN PIE

• The Sahuarita Pecan Festival, “the nuttiest festival in Arizona,” is held in an area where pecan orchards need Pecan trees are present in many countries but are native more than rain to grow. Sahuarita is home of the world’s only to North America. Pecan pies are wonderful treats that largest irrigated pecan orchard, with approximately 106,000 were considered only a Southern (U.S.) holiday pie in years trees growing on 6,000 acres (2428 ha). past. • Many nuts are only identified with one state, such as macadamia nuts from Hawaii, filberts from Oregon and almonds, pistachios and walnuts from California. Pecans are a multi-state crop with about 75 percent of all pecans grown in 20 states from the Southeast to the Southwest. The top four states for production are Georgia, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. • There are some conflicts about the origin of pecan pie. Many believe that the French came up with the pie in New Orleans after being introduced to pecans by Native Americans. Recipes for pecan pie have not been found dating before 1925. • According to the Karo Syrup website (karosyrup.com), pecan pie had its beginnings with their syrup. The corn syrup, in dark or light, introduced in 1902, definitely helped to spread the popularity of pecan pie. The website says that around 1930: “The wife of corporate sales executive discovers a new use for corn syrup. A mixture of corn syrup, sugar, eggs, vanilla and pecans baked in a pie shell produces the now classic Pecan Pie destined to become a world-class favorite. Down South, today, that same recipe continues to be called Karo Pie.” • It doesn’t really matter who started making the delicious pies. Whether made with Karo Syrup or another brand, pecan pies are consumed and loved by many today. Just watch your waistline —They are loaded with calories! • There are many pecan festivals in the states where the native nut is grown. Most of them, naturally, have pecan pie contests. • Groves, Texas, home to around 2,500 large, old, but very productive pecan trees, hosts the “official” Texas Pecan Festival every fall. The designation by the state legislature gives the small southeast Texas town something to brag about. • Brunswick, the pecan capital of Missouri, has been holding an annual festival since 1980. Brunswick is also the home of the world’s largest pecan. James Pecan Farms, east of town, is where the “Starking Hardy Giant” pecan was constructed of concrete in 1982.

• Okmulgee, Oklahoma, was known for its festival and “world’s largest” pecan pie. Unfortunately, that festival was cancelled in 1999, after 25 years of huge pies. •

Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico and both North and South Carolina all have pecan festivals as well. All have their own “personalities,” but you can bet that all have pecan pie.

• Pecan pie is always a favorite pie in the Southern United States, but many in other U.S. locations and Canada enjoy the pie as well. Still, in nearly every poll, the favorite pie in North America is apple pie. Whether your favorite variety is pumpkin, berry, apple or pecan, as you eat your holiday meals this year, leave some room for pie.

• On Dec. 18, 1620, the Mayflower docks at what today is Plymouth, Mass., and its passengers disembarked to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony. The winter of 1620-1621 was brutal, and by spring, only 52 of the original 102 Mayflower passengers were still alive. • On Dec. 16, 1773, in Boston Harbor, a group of Massachusetts colonists disguised as Mohawk Indians board three British tea ships and dump 342 chests of tea into the harbor in protest of the British Parliament’s Tea Act of 1773. The value of the tea was more than $700,000 in today’s currency. • On Dec. 14, 1909, workers place the last of the 3.2 million 10-pound bricks that pave the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indiana. Since then, all but a 1yard-wide strip at the start-finish line has been buried under asphalt. Kissing those bricks after a successful race remains a tradition among Indy drivers. • On Dec. 13, 1916, a powerful avalanche kills hundreds of Austrian soldiers in barracks near Italy’s Mount Marmolada. Over a period of several weeks, avalanches killed an estimated 10,000 Austrian and Italian soldiers. • On Dec. 17, 1961, a fire at a filled-to-capacity circus in Brazil kills more than 300 people and severely burns 500 more. The cause of the fire was never conclusively determined, but it may have been the result of sparks from a train passing nearby. • On Dec. 15, 1973, Jean Paul Getty III, the grandson of American billionaire J. Paul Getty, is found alive near Naples, five months after his kidnapping by an Italian gang. Getty had initially refused to pay his 16year-old grandson’s $17 million ransom, but finally agreed after the boy’s severed right ear was sent to a newspaper in Rome. • On Dec. 12, 1980, American oil tycoon Armand Hammer pays $5,126,000 at auction for a notebook containing writings by the legendary artist Leonardo da Vinci. The manuscript, written around 1508, contained 72 loose pages featuring some 300 notes and detailed drawings, all relating to the common theme of water and how it moved.

• His first big concert featuring his “First Symphony,” happened in 1800, after his deafness started. Beethoven is most famous for writing nine symphonies, which are Born into a musical family in Bonn, Germany, on December works played by a full orchestra. He also completed many 16, 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven was destined to become other works for piano and string quartets. Almost totally a musician. He became one of the greatest composers of all deaf by age 47, he composed much of his music without time. the joy of hearing all of the notes.

BEETHOVEN

• Beethoven did not have an easy life. His father was a drinker, probably an alcoholic, and pushed him as a young boy to put music ahead of everything — even sleep and play. He was standing on a stool playing the piano when he was only 4 years old. His father seemed more interested in being the father of a great musician than in loving his son. • Beethoven’s first paid public performance was when he was only 7 or 8 years old, at his father’s prompting. An excellent musician hired by the Prince of Bonn named Christian Neefe heard Beethoven play and knew he had excellent potential as a musician. Neefe started teaching the young boy in a much kinder and more caring way. By the time he was 12, Neefe would actually let him play the organ and direct his orchestra alone! •When Beethoven was around 18 years old, the Prince of Bonn sent him to Vienna, Austria, which was the center of music in Europe. After a short and successful time there, including a chance to play for Mozart, Beethoven returned to Bonn to be with his seriously ill mother. She and his baby sister both died shortly after his return. • With his father still consuming alcohol and becoming more and more irresponsible, Beethoven asked the Prince of Bonn to appoint him head of his family. From that point on, he was responsible for running a household, keeping his father out of trouble and raising his two younger brothers. • Bonn was an excellent place to continue his musical studies, but Beethoven had a great desire to return to Vienna. In 1792, at the age of 22, he gave his father money to care for his brothers and left to pursue his studies. Even though Mozart had died by the time he returned, he was able to study under Joseph Haydn, another famous composer of Vienna. • A short seven weeks after his studies with Haydn started in Vienna, Beethoven’s father died. His brothers joined him in Vienna, and he never returned to his home in Bonn. • Beethoven quickly became a hit thanks to his composing and imaginative piano playing. He was the “rock star” of his day! With success coming his way in the music world, Beethoven struggled with personal issues. He never understood why his father had been such a difficult man to live with. Also, Beethoven never married. He wanted a family of his own but that never happened. • Beethoven’s biggest challenge, and one that would depress and even stop most musicians, started affecting him in 1798 when he was only 28 years old. He was losing his hearing. Many people started noticing moodiness and thought he was unfriendly.

Always Great Brown Rice Makes 6 1/2-cup servings

Brown rice supplies more vitamins, minerals, protein, and fiber than does white rice. This cooking method ensures perfect rice and actually reduces the usual cooking time. Short-grain brown rice tends to be a bit chewy; long-grain brown rice is slightly more tender and fluffy. If brown rice is new to you, you may want to start with the long-grain variety. 1 cup dry brown rice 3 cups water 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) Rinse rice in a medium saucepan of cool water. Drain off water as thoroughly as possible. Put the saucepan on medium heat, stirring constantly for about 2 minutes, or until rice dries. Add 3 cups water and salt, if using. Bring to a boil, then lower heat slightly. Cover and simmer for about 40 minutes, or until rice is soft but still retains a hint of crunchiness. Drain excess liquid. This liquid can be saved and used as a broth for soups and stews, if desired. In a larger bowl, combine bananas, sugar, non-dairy milk, vinegar, and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Add flour mixture and stir just to mix. Stir in dates. Fill lightly vegetable oil sprayed muffin cups 3/4 full. Bake for about 25 minutes until muffin tops spring back when lightly touched and a toothpick inserted in center of a muffin comes out clean. Stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, Banana Date Muffins will keep for up to 3 days. If longer storage is needed, place muffins in a covered container in the freezer for up to 1 month. Antibiotics Usually End Kidney Infection DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am recuperating from a kidney infection (pyelitis). The doctor did a culture of my urine, which showed a gram negative rod. What kind of infection is that? -- S.B. ANSWER: The more common urinary tract infection is infection of the bladder -- cystitis. Pyelitis (PIE-uh-LITEiss), now usually called pyelonephritis, is an infection of the kidney itself. It is a much more serious infection, and one that usually makes people take to their bed. Pyelitis causes high fever often alternating with chills. People have intense flank pain, the side area between the lowest rib and the upper part of the pelvis. The infection also might make people urinate more frequently and with pain. These two signs, however, are more apt to indicate bladder infection. The most frequent cause of pyelitis is the bacterium E. coli. Bacteria are classified into two large groups based on how they react to a stain used to visualize them with a microscope. The stain is the Gram stain, named after the doctor who devised it. Bacteria are either gram positive or gram negative. A gram positive bacterium turns blue with the stain; a gram negative turns red.

Dog’s Cough a Worry DEAR PAWS’S CORNER: My friend has a Border Collie mix, “Jeffy, who is about two or three years old. He snorts or coughs at least 10 or 15 times a day, and when he does, a copious amount of mucus comes out of his nose. Can you tell me what causes this and how to remedy it? -- B.P., Prince George, Va. DEAR B.P.: Coughing in dogs can have a number of causes, ranging from allergy to serious infection. The first thing your friend needs to do is take Jeffy to the veterinarian to rule out a dangerous illness like kennel cough or other infection, or an injury. Your friend should let the vet know how long Jeffy has had this cough, if he was recently boarded or regularly goes to doggy day care, and if his shots are up to date. Jeffy also should be regularly treated with a heartworm preventive; if he isn’t, your friend must let the doctor know. If Jeffy dealt with a recent flea infestation, let the vet know. If Jeffy is diagnosed with an illness -- respiratory infections can happen to any dog -- the vet will determine the type of infection and prescribe medicine to treat it. He also may prescribe a cough suppressant to give the dog a little relief from the coughing. If Jeffy gets a clean bill of health, your friend will want to look into other causes of his cough and mucus, such as seasonal allergies, a food allergy or an environmental allergy such as dampness and/or mold in the house. Treatment, along with reduced exposure to the allergen that’s causing the problem, can make a big difference. Send your question or tip to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Tarantino shifted the time and place to the pre-Civil War south and cast Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx in the title role of an escaped slave turned bounty hunter who returns to the plantation to free his wife. It also stars Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Sasha Baron Cohen and Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo plays a villain who forces slaves into prostitution. Too bad it isn’t a musical ... the hit song could be “Tango with Django!”

HOLLYWOOD -- Parent groups are all over the possibility that NBC will replace CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan on “America’s Got Talent” with radio shock-jock Howard Stern. They’ve informed the network that Stern “is not appropriate for the family-friendly series.” It was on Stern’s show that producer Brett Ratner followed up his anti-gay comment at a Q&A for his film “Tower Heist” with a detailed accounting of his sex life. The one-two punch caused such an outcry in Hollywood that Ratner was compelled to resign as producer of the next Oscar show, quickly followed by the announcement that host Eddie Murphy would resign as well.

Everyone’s wondering, what was the real reason Regis Philbin left his talk show after nearly three decades? When Regis hosted “Good Morning L.A.,” I was on the set photographing Carol Burnett, whom I’d known since I was 11. Regis pointed at me, standing behind the camera, and said, “We should have him on the show ... he knows everything about Hollywood!” I guested on the show five times. You can be sure that if Regis left the show that bears his name, he must have something really big up his sleeve. He’s done talk shows, game shows and even nightclubs -what’s next, “Regis the Series,” “Regis in 3D” or “Cirque Du Regis”?

Insiders speculate Murphy realized he was over his head and wanted out. Ratner got him into it and had to get him out of it! We’ll never know how Murphy would’ve done as host, but lucky for us, Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer and eight-time Oscar host Billy Crystal were waiting in the wings and will surely blow the roof off the Kodak Theatre. That’s a slam dunk! Producer/director/writer and actor Quentin Tarantino won his Oscar for writing the screenplay of 1994’s “Pulp Fiction.” Now he’s finished directing Oscar-winner

Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu in “The Man With the Iron Fist,” due out in October 2012, and is working on his next film, “Django Unchained.” Tarantino’s screenplay is based and James Van Der Beek’s current girlfriend. Claire and I joked about how she is living the fantasy of every girl who grew up watching James and Mark-Paul in the ‘90s, including herself: “It’s too bad I didn’t get a job like this when I first came to town -- or maybe it’s good thing, because I probably would have lost my mind.”

Q: I really like “Grimm” on NBC. Can you tell me about the actress who plays the beautiful blond Reaper? -- David S., via e-mail A:

She’s thrilled about her role on “Grimm,” telling me: “I really wanted this one, because I’ve never gotten to play any sort of supernatural character before. I’ve never played an evil witch who has fight scenes and kills people. I got to put some new special skills on the resume through this job.” *** Q: When is my favorite show, “Southland,” coming back to TNT? -- Johnny C. in New Hampshire A: You don’t have to wait much longer for the season four premiere on Jan. 17. This season will feature returning stars Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King and Ben McKenzie, and will guest-star Lucy Liu. This season will also reunite Regina King with her “227” co-star Marla Gibbs, who guest-stars as a family member of a suspect that Detective Lydia Adams (Regina) is investigating for murder. *** Q: Now that Eddie Murphy is no longer hosting the Oscars, do you think he’ll host the Golden Globes? -- Peggy G., via e-mail

Claire Coffee plays Reaper assassin Adalind Schade (who also happens to be a lawyer). Claire, 31, also is on TNT’s “Franklin and Bash,” playing Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s ex

A: That gig has gone to actor/comedian/writer/producer Ricky Gervais, who’s hosted the previous two Golden Globes ceremonies. Most of you know I wholeheartedly approve of this choice, as do many of the Hollywood royalty that Ricky teases. Liam Neeson has voiced his approval of Ricky, saying: “Hollywood needs a shakeup. He’ll be great.” Robert DeNiro showered Ricky with praise after last year’s controversial telecast, telling Ricky he’d be happy to set anyone straight who was offended. Johnny Depp guest-stars on Ricky’s new TV show, “Life’s Too Short,” poking fun of himself and Ricky in a hilarious sketch (Google it and see for yourself). The Golden Globes

A: Demi recently announced her decision to file for divorce from Ashton, stating: “It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life.” Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. by Samantha Weaver • It was English biologist Thomas Henry Huxley who made the following sage observation: “Irrationally held truths may be more harmful than reasoned errors.” • If you put your rubber bands in the refrigerator, they’ll last longer. • It’s not just the tiger’s fur that has stripes; its skin is striped, too. • You probably know that the iconic film “Rocky” starred Sylvester Stallone in the leading role, but you might not be aware of the fact that he wrote the script, as well. The sale of the rights to the script came just in time; he had a total of $106 in his bank account and was trying to sell his dog for lack of the means to feed it. • In the winter of 1932, Niagara Falls froze solid. • Madame Tussaud started creating her famous wax figures in 1777 and created many models during the French Revolution. She traveled around Europe displaying wax figures (both the ones she created and ones she inherited from her mentor), and she opened her first museum in London in 1831. Today there are branches located in the United Kingdom, Amsterdam, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Vienna, Moscow, Bangkok, Dubai, Berlin and Hamburg, plus five U.S. locations. It’s appropriate that there are more locations in American than in any other country, since so many Hollywood celebrities are recreated in the museums. In fact, in 2006, Shiloh, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s baby, became the first infant to be memorialized in wax for Madame Tussauds. • Those who study such things say that apples are more effective than caffeine at waking you up in the morning. • It’s not clear why, but a duck’s quack doesn’t create echoes. *** Thought for the Day: “The trouble with being punctual is that nobody’s there to appreciate it.” -- Franklin P. To break the habit of using payday lenders, open a savings account at a credit union. When you need a loan, ask there first.

Financial Crutches Can be Addicting Three addicting financial habits can cost you extra money in the long run, according to The National Foundation for Credit Counseling. Here are the culprits: Pawn shops will loan money in exchange for an item you own, such as a television or stereo. It’s considered an easy way to get money, and it can be addicting because of the immediacy. At the end of the agreed upon period, you can buy your item back -- by paying the original amount plus interest. If you can’t pay at that time, you can extend the loan period, with additional interest tacked on to the original amount. The interest rates are more than you’d ever pay at a bank. To break the pawnshop habit, set aside money until you accumulate an emergency fund. Payday loans can be addictive because of the immediate payoff (you get the cash right now) and the delayed payback (you write a post-dated check). At the end of the agreed upon period, the lender will cash your check -- which is for the amount you borrowed plus interest. As with pawn shops, the interest rates can be astronomical.

Rent-to-Own is considered an easy way to get furniture, televisions, appliances and even computers for your home by making small weekly payments. As with anything that sounds too good to be true, once you add up the fees and interest, along with the payments, you could end up paying five or six times what you would have paid in a store. To break the rent-to-own habit, save your money and buy one item at a time. If you use a credit card, don’t charge more than you can realistically pay off in three months. While NFCC doesn’t mention it, buying a new vehicle every year can be an addictive habit as well. A shiny car or truck, without a scratch, with that new-car smell and brand-new tires -- it’s easy to want one in the driveway. The problem is that vehicles depreciate quickly. The longer you keep a vehicle, however, the less it depreciates each year. Invest in a complete vehicle detailing service twice a year, and keep the vehicle at least three years. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. • “Burned rice? No problem. While it’s still hot, carefully remove to a new pot any rice not browned or blackened. Then top it with a single slice of white bread. But what to do if you unpack yours and it’s wrinkled? Get those wrinkles out in a hurry with a hair dryer. Set the hair dryer to a low setting, and gently run the warm air over the wrinkles. Then smooth and set the table. • To freshen rugs without the heavy perfume smell of store-bought brands, simply sprinkle a little baking soda on your carpet and let it sit for about 10 minutes before vacuuming. • Wrap the lint from your dryer in 6-inch strips of wax paper. My specialist Eva quickly diagnosed my skin as sensitive and seriously dehydrated. She started with a gentle cleansing, steaming and one of the most painless pore extractions I’ve ever felt. And then it was on to my favorite part, a relaxing massage of my face, neck and shoulders with aromatherapy oil. Following a refreshing hydrating gel masque Eva massaged my arms and hands, I was on cloud 9! She finished my treatment with a moisturizing cream from the Éminence® Organic Skin Care, a line that brings together high quality Hungarian ingredients with an old world knowledge of herbs and fruits used by the most exclusive spas in the country. I left being advised not to do anything to my skin until the following morning, and I awoke with skin that was definitely smoother and less irritated than the day before.
