TIDBITS® SINGS
12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS by Kathy Wolfe
Most of us are familiar with the popular Christmas tune “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” This week, Tidbits has a few more details about each of the gifts received by the singer from his or her “true love,” everything from drummers drumming to maids a-milking to swans, geese, turtledoves and the partridge in the pear tree! • The drum is considered the oldest musical instrument and is also used for non-musical purposes, such as longdistance communication. An Englishman set a world record by playing 400 separate drums in 16.3 seconds in 1995. Ireland’s Millennium Drum, constructed of birch plywood and sailcloth, is considered the world’s largest drum with a diameter of 15 feet, 6 inches. It was built for Ireland’s millennium festivities. • A set of panpipes consists of from three to 40 tubes, usually cane, but also wood or pottery. The length of the pipes determines the pitch of the note. • Greek mythology tells of Pan, the god of woods and pastures and the protector of shepherds and their flocks. According to legend, Pan, half-man and half-goat, is the inventor of the panpipe, fashioned from reeds, on which he piped lovely music. turn the page for more! 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (continued): • The title “Lord” can be used if a gentleman is a baron, viscount, earl, marquis, bishop, a dignitary of the Church of England or a member of Great Britain’s House of Lords. An aga is a Turkish Lord. • The cuckoopint is a European plant with bright red poisonous berries and is often referred to as the “Lordsand-Ladies.” Ingesting the berries can result in swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, burning pain and an upset stomach. • The 1993 Arizona half-marathon had an interesting entrant, Elizabeth Ursic, who chose to tap-dance the 13.1mile distance. • In 1931, a couple set out to win Chicago’s Merry Garden Ballroom dance marathon. They danced over 214 days, with rest periods beginning at 20 minutes per hour, decreasing to zero minutes per hour. They were not allowed to close

Their recordsetting endurance was rewarded with a $2,000 prize. • A California cow named simply “Number 289” is the leader in lifetime milk production, with more than 54,070 gallons of milk to her credit. That’s enough to fill more than eight 60foot tanker trucks. She averaged about 7 gallons a day, compared to about 4.4 gallons for a normal cow. Number 289 lived to be 19 years old, about four times longer than the average Holstein. • Thanks to L.O. Colvin, we have the milking machine. Back in 1860, he introduced the first suctiontype contraption. A sign seen in recent years on the back of a milk truck read: “Modern Milking Machine Company … All That We
• “Swan” is the 1,471st most popular last name in the United States, which computes to about 20,000 people. • Swans live on every continent except Africa and Antarctica. The sounds they make vary from whistles to hisses to trumpet-like noises. Beware of the female swan; she will attack anything that presents a danger to her eggs, including dogs, foxes and people. • The stars Deneb and Albirco mark the head and tail of the swan in the constellation Cygnus. According to mythology, Cygnus was a friend of the son of Apollo, the sun god. When the son fell into the river, Cygnus dove into the water time after time in an attempt to rescue his friend, but to no avail. They myth says Cygnus was turned into a swan by Zeus in order to allow him to dive deeper. The English language uses the word “cygnet” for a baby swan. • Although the lifespan of the domestic goose averages 25 years, making it the longest-lived bird, George the Goose of Thornton, England, lived to be nearly 50 years old. Speckle the Goose of Goshen, Ohio, is noted for laying the world’s heaviest egg. It was 24 ounces, twice as weighty as the average goose egg. • In order for it to be made into jewelry, other metals must be added to gold, creating an “alloy.” If your ring is 18-karat gold, it is 18 parts pure gold and six parts other metals.

• Nevada is the leading gold-mining state in America, producing 79 percent of the nation’s supply. South Africa leads the world. It takes more than two tons of South African rock to yield less than one ounce of gold. • It’s believed that the calling bird in the song is actually the mockingbird, a bird with the ability to imitate the sounds of other birds. One such bird was heard to imitate the songs of 32 different birds during a 10-minute period. • Can you identify the famous family who lived at 1313 Mockingbird Lane? It was television’s Herman Munster family — Herman, Lily, Grandpa and Eddie. • A hen begins laying eggs when she is about 20 weeks old. If a farmer uses artificial lighting, the hen will begin laying at a younger age. If she is exposed to about 15 hours of light per day, she will lay more eggs. The average hen lays about 250 eggs in a year. • A member of the pigeon family, a turtledove is noted for its purring coo. It differs from the mourning dove, although the two are often mistaken. Don’t look for turtledoves in America, as they live mainly in Europe, Asia and Africa.

12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS (continued): • The Turtledove Folk Club of Coatesville, Pennsylvania, is an organization for music lovers, specifically those who want to preserve and promote folk music and dance. • A partridge is most generally known as a quail or a bobwhite. There are about 150 varieties of partridges. Some parts of America refer to a partridge as a ruffed grouse. If you plan to keep a partridge as a pet, have plenty of grains, plant shoots and insects on hand. A typical bobwhite might consume as many 15,000 weed seeds a day, a tremendous help to farmers. • If someone offers you a Comice, Seckel, Winter Nelis, Kieffer, Leconte, Anjou, Bosc or Garber, he is offering you an item obtained from a pear tree. Over 800,000 tons of pears are produced annually in the United States, with the state of Washington leading the nation in fresh pear production. The average American eats about 3.1 pounds of fresh pears a year.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:
FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE
Named after Florence, Italy, the city of her birth, Florence Nightingale was born to wealthy parents on May 12, 1820. She felt called by God to help others as a nurse. • In England in the 1800s, nurses were not valued in society. Being from a wealthy family, Nightingale was expected to marry, raise a family and carry on life in “high” society. Her social circle didn’t look kindly at working-class women. She lived with her parents and sister in Embley Park, Hampshire, England. • Nightingale was very close to her father. He did not have a son and took great pains to educate her. He taught

as the Crimean War. British soldiers soon became infected with cholera and malaria in great numbers. Nightingale volunteered her services to help the soldiers. She took 38 nurses with her to the army hospital near the conflict.
• Nightingale’s desire was not necessarily to be a career woman but to help others in need. She spent 11 years visiting the sick in hospitals. She was greatly encouraged when she visited two St. Vincent de Paul sisters at a convent in Alexandria, Egypt. She felt they were more caring and were better nurses than the ones she had seen in England.
• Nightingale was appalled at the conditions of the army hospital. The lack of hygiene and good elementary care available to the British soldiers was causing and prolonging a lot of the health issues. She started a campaign to improve the quality of nursing in military hospitals. She also encouraged the soldiers by establishing recreation and reading rooms at the hospitals.
• Nightingale was further encouraged to pursue a medical career when she met Elizabeth Blackwell at a hospital in London. Blackwell was the first woman to qualify as a medical doctor in the United States. Blackwell had overcome great obstacles in pursuit of her medical career and urged Nightingale to keep trying to convince her father to allow her to study. Finally in 1851, when she was age 31, Nightingale’s father gave her permission to seek nursing training. • Nightingale studied at the Institute of Protestant Deaconesses in Kaiserwerth, Germany. Two years later, she started work at a London hospital for women. • In March 1853, Russia invaded Turkey, and Britain and France stepped in to help Turkey in what became known

• In 1856, Nightingale met with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and gave evidence of the horrible conditions to the 1857 Sanitary Commission. This resulted in the Army Medical College being formed. • Also, Nightingale founded the Nightingale School & Home for Nurses at St. Thomas Hospital and became involved in training nurses for employment in workhouses that were established for the poor. • Known as “The Lady with the Lamp” for her habit of making rounds at night, Nightingale was and will always be remembered as a national heroine in England. Worldwide recognition is given to her in the Nightingale Pledge that is taken by new nurses, and the annual International Nurses Day is held on her birthday.

I’LL TAKE A DOZEN There are some units of measurment that are just odd. For instance, the words knot, carat, cubit, ream, bale and dozen. Let’s spend about 40 dozen words looking at the ins and outs of dozen. • A dozen equals 12 things. Eggs, doughnuts, flowers and more are often measured in dozens. • The word dozen is a contraction of the Latin word duodecim, which means two plus 10. The root “duo” also appears in duodenum, the first part of the intestines, which happens to be about 12 inches (30.48 cm) long. Some language and math historians believe that a dozen is one of the earliest groupings, hence there are a dozen cycles of the moon in a cycle of the sun. There are a dozen months in the year, and watches and clocks are based on 12 hours of A.M. and 12 hours of P.M. • In the Bible, there are 12 tribes of Israel in the Old Testament, and Jesus chose 12 men to be his disciples in the New Testament. But these groups were never referred to as a dozen! • Do you know the significance of giving a dozen roses? Even though many don’t think of this, it is said to convey that the gift giver is thinking of the recipient all 12 months of the year. True love!

Visit Our New Website for Additional Savings! www.ccshippingco.com likely started because of severe punishments that existed in England when bakers shorted their customers. Bakers feared not giving their customers the proper weight of goods, so instead of not giving enough, they would give extra, just to be sure! An extra roll, pastry or loaf of bread would surely satisfy their customers and fulfill the law as well.
• The original movie “Cheaper By the Dozen” was based on the 1948 autobiographical book written by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey, two of the children of efficiency experts Frank Bunker Gilbreth, Sr. and Lillian Moller Gilbreth. The couple had a dozen children, and the book is based on a comment that the father was often heard saying when people asked him why he had so many children. He’d say, “Well, they come cheaper by the dozen, you know.” • Two more “Cheaper By the Dozen” movies were made in 2003 and 2005, but they were not based on the real family or book. The only similarities were that the family had a dozen children and a lot of chaos! Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt starred in those movies.

• Bake shops were regulated by the Worshipful Company of Bakers, a trade guild to which most bakers belonged in medieval England. The guild regulated bread prices, what types were available for sale and where new shops could be established. The motto for the company was and still is, “Praise God for All.” • The next time you visit a doughnut shop or bakery, ask what their policy is concerning a baker’s dozen. Chances are, they’ll throw in an extra for you!

When the Holidays Won’t Light Up Q: I bought three strings of exterior holiday lights last year to decorate the trees in my backyard. This year, although I put them up the same way, half the bulbs on one string won’t light. What’s going on? -- Carol in Cocoa, Fla. A: The problem is likely as simple as a single burned-out light bulb halfway down the string. Turn on the lights as you normally do and locate the first bulb on the string that will not light up. Mark that bulb with a small bit of masking tape so you can find it again, and then unplug the string. Go to the box where you stored your holiday lights and look for a container or a small plastic bag that contains replacement bulbs and fuses. Return to your string, locate the burned-out bulb, remove it by pulling it firmly straight out of the socket, and put a replacement bulb in its place. (The new bulb must be the same size and type as the old one.) Plug the string back in and turn on. If the bulb was the culprit, the entire string will relight. If that method doesn’t work, you may have a fuse issue. Fuses are located in each of the plugs. If your strings are attached end-to-end and the failure occurs at one of these attachment points, try removing the old fuse from the attached end and putting in a replacement fuse (be sure to unplug the entire string before doing this, just to be safe). Fuse faults can occur when too many strings are attached end-to-end, overloading the circuit. Read the package instructions to find out the maximum number of light strings that can be attached to each other (three strings is a good limit).
HOME TIP: Avoid using holiday lights marked “indoor use only” on the outside of your house or in your yard, for safety reasons. Use exterior lights instead.
Meringue Mushrooms Are Whimsical Treat

3 egg whites (1/2 cup) at room temperature 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 cup chocolate chips Cocoa powder for dusting
1. Preheat oven to 225 F. In a large bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy and foamy with an electric mixer set at low speed. Add the cream of tartar. Increase speed until soft peaks form. Spoon the thick mixture into a large plastic zipper-style (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc. bag and push toward one corner to form a pastry bag. Cut off
4. Place the two cookie sheets in the oven for 1 hour or until meringues can be lifted easily. Turn off the heat and leave in the oven with the door propped open for an hour or more. The extra time allows the meringue caps and stems to dry. 5. To construct mushrooms, melt the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe dish. Use a small spoon to spread chocolate on the underside of a cap. Attach a stem. Allow the chocolate “glue” to harden. Fruit (3 or more servings a day) Fruits are rich in fiber, vitamin C, and beta-carotene. Be sure to include at least one serving each day of fruits high in vitamin C—citrus fruits, melons, and strawberries are all good choices. Choose whole fruit over fruit juices, which do not contain very much fiber.
Top Five Foods You Can’t Live Without Beans and lentils add heartiness to soups, stews, chili, and other recipes. Plus, they’re loaded with cancer-fighting fiber and healthy plant protein. Broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables such as kale, cauliflower, collard greens and Brussels sprouts contain potent cancer-fighting compounds and have been shown to help rid the body of excess hormones. Berries such as blueberries and blackberries are full of powerful antioxidants that help stop free radical damage which can otherwise lead to cancer. Carrots and other orange-colored fruits and vegetables such as sweet potatoes, mango, cantaloupe, pumpkin, and squash are incredible sources of beta-carotene, which is crucial for cancer prevention and survival. Just 1 large carrot a day helps you meet your daily requirement! Whole grains such as brown rice, quinoa, oats, and millet are rich sources of fiber and B vitamins, essential for health. Plus, they’re loaded with complex carbohydrates to keep you full and help you avoid unhealthy snacking. *Try the New Four Food Groups and Discover a Healthier Way To Live!
Vegetables (4 or more servings a day) Vegetables are packed with nutrients, including vitamin C, beta-carotene, riboflavin, iron, calcium, fiber, and other nutrients. Dark-green leafy vegetables, such as broccoli, collards, kale, mustard and turnip greens, chicory, and bok choy, are especially good sources of these important nutrients. Dark-yellow and orange vegetables such as carcar-rotsrots, winter squash, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin provide extra beta-carotene. Include generous portions of a variety of vegetables in your diet.

Bride Wants to Use Dog in Wedding DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My stepdaughter Susan is getting married on the day after Christmas, in the Bahamas. A lot of her relatives, including myself, are rather miffed about the date and location. But even more outrageous are her plans for the wedding itself. She’s decided that her yellow Lab, “Briny,” will serve as the ring bearer! I’m not sure how she plans to pull this off, but I think it’s really inappropriate. How can I tell her this without upsetting her? -- Joyce L., Deerfield Beach, Fla. DEAR JOYCE: I don’t think there’s a way to say what’s on your mind without upsetting her, because you’re unhappy with the wedding plans overall. Personally, I think it sounds really fun that Briny has such an important place in the wedding. Susan does need to make sure that Briny can make the trip over to the Bahamas. The website www.bahamas. com has details on getting a pet import permit, but the most important detail is that Briny must have up-todate shots and Susan must bring the written record of those immunizations with her. So, the most you can and should do is double-check with Susan that she has taken care of these requirements for Briny and that she’s staying in accommodations that allow pets.
Whole Grains (5 or more servings a day)
This close to the wedding, it’s probably best not to go into any other details. If you’ve accepted the invitation and finalized your travel plans, go to the wedding, enjoy a fruity beverage (preferably with an umbrella), and be happy.
This group includes bread, rice, pasta, hot or cold cereal, corn, millet, barley, bulgur, buckwheat groats, and tortillas. Build each of your meals around a hearty grain dish. Grains are rich in fiber and other complex carbohydrates, as well as protein, B vitamins, and zinc.

Wine -- Good or Bad DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am thoroughly confused. Several months ago, I read of the benefit of wine for women. The conclusion was that it reduced a woman’s chances of heart attack and stroke by 30 percent. My husband and I have started to drink one glass of wine a day. Now comes a new report that says just one glass of wine a day increases the chances for breast cancer. Should I be concerned? -- M.T. ANSWER: Welcome to the army of nutrition confusion. What’s good one day might be life-threatening the next. I don’t rely on one report. I stick to what the majority says. If the majority changes its mind, then I change. Wine and other alcoholic drinks lower the incidence of heart disease and, apparently, strokes. That’s the current majority thinking. Moderate drinkers of alcohol -- wine in particular -- have a lower overall mortality rate than do alcohol abstainers and heavy drinkers. “Moderate” drinking is one glass of wine, one 12-ounce can of beer or 1.5 ounces of whiskey for women; it’s two for men. The role of wine (or alcohol) in promoting breast cancer is less clear. Analysis of 40 studies shows an increase in breast cancer for women downing three or more drinks a day. The same studies suggest that even one or two daily drinks might pose a slight danger. Other studies show an increase in lobular breast cancer with one drink a day, but no increase in ductal breast cancer. Ductal cancer is the most common kind of breast cancer. I am positive that equally confusing information will be forthcoming. The best advice I have read is this: If a woman truly

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: How much stress does sex put on the heart? I don’t have a heart problem. I know two fellow workers, who, according to scuttlebutt, died while having sex. They were about my age. -- R.L.
(c) 2011 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserve
ANSWER: Scuttlebutt isn’t a reliable source of information. Blood pressure and heart rate rise during sexual relations, but not so much as to be a source of concern for most men and women, even those who have had a heart attack. The energy expenditure is approximately the same as climbing two flights of stairs. That is, walking, not running, up those flights. Most people who have had a heart attack can resume an active sex life within three to six weeks of having the attack. The exact amount of time has to be determined by the person’s physician, who takes into account the magnitude of the heart attack and how well the heart is currently performing. How Do You Pay Off Debt? When you’re saddled with multiple debt payments every month and want to put extra money toward paying off one at a time, how do you decide which debt gets the extra money first? There are two schools of thought: Some financial gurus advise paying off the smallest debt first, and then using that extra money to attack the next smallest. Others believe in going for the one with the highest interest rate first, no matter how large or small the debt. But when it comes down to it, it’s the consumer, not the

pay off the debt if you make only minimum payments, as well as a sample comparison to how much you’d have to pay each month to retire the debt more quickly.
Now a University of Michigan study (Winning the Battle but Losing the War: The Psychology of Debt Management) has uncovered the reasons for consumer debt repayment decisions. Researchers concluded that consumers will pay off a small debt first, even if a larger debt has a higher interest rate, for the emotional and psychological satisfaction of retiring a debt -- a “quick win,” as they dubbed it. Correct or not, consumers are concerned with reducing the number of debts more than they are with the dollar value of the debts.
You can make use of an online calculator to show 1) how quickly a debt will be paid off if you make payments of varying amounts, and 2) how much interest you’ll be paying during that time. Search online for “credit card payment calculator,” then do the math for each of your debts to see which plan gets you debt-free the fastest.
It was only when consumers were shown the amount of interest they were paying that some saw the sense in changing their repayment methods. Credit-card companies are now required to show in a box on each month’s statement just how long it will take you to screening takes place at the Grand Cafe in Paris. HOLLYWOOD -- What does it take to become a movie star today? Take Jeremy Irvine, who hails from the little town of Cambridgeshire, England. In 2008 he landed a role in the teen series “Life Bites” on the British Disney Channel. After two seasons, the show was put on hold and he took a role in the Royal Shakespeare production of “Dunsinane,” the sequel to “Macbeth,” as a spear carrier. A routine audition for the film “War Horse” turned into two months of call backs until he was asked to do a film test.
When he was handed the script for the test, it told him that Steven Spielberg, who was directing the film, wanted him for the lead. “War Horse,” a very successful play in London and on Broadway that utilizes puppets as the horses, takes place during World War I. There was just one problem, though -- Jeremy had never been on a horse! He had to go through two months of extensive training to play a boy who searches war-torn Europe to find his horse. Eleven horses were used to portray his horse, Joey, at various stages of his life. In addition, Jeremy has been dealing with Type 1 diabetes since he was 6 years old, which you can be sure had to be dealt with for such a demanding physical role. “War Horse” is rated PG-13 and opens on Christmas Day. Jeremy is currently playing Pip in the new film of Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” with Helena Bonham Carter, and then goes right into “The Railway Man” with Colin Firth and Rachel Weisz. So far, he still prefers living in Bedfordshire, England, with his parents and two younger brothers rather than Hollywood, but when Hollywood calls, most young actors answer! *** If you haven’t seen “The Artist” yet, go see why it’s already getting Oscar buzz. French director Michael Hazanavicius cast French actors Jean Dujardin, who won the best actor award at The Cannes Film Festival this year for playing a rising actor who has to deal with the advent of talking pictures, and Berenice Bejo, as well as John Goodman, James Cromwell, Penelope Ann Miller and Malcolm McDowell. Shooting for seven weeks in and around noisy Los Angeles wasn’t a problem for “The Artist,” since it’s in black and white and is A SILENT FILM! The one and only silent film to win the best picture Oscar was l928’s epic “Wings.” If “The Artist” should win, the movie industry will have come full circle, and it will have taken 84 years to prove people who said “Talkies won’t last!” and “Silent films are all washed up!” wrong -- twice! Word has it that season six will probably (not definitely) be the show’s final season, so it is the general consensus that the higher-ups wanted to get the most out of this season -- and their contractually obligated actors -that they could. This move is kind of crappy for the actors, however, because instead of the production of the season ending in February -- leaving them open to audition for the fall 2012 pilot season -- it looks like they won’t be available for casting calls for new shows. *** Q: Is my mind playing tricks on me, or did I see an ad that “Fear Factor” is returning to NBC? -- Mike R., West Palm Beach, Fla.

A: You are of sound mind, Mike. “Fear Factor” has returned to NBC (shows began airing Dec. 12) on Monday nights. Original host, comedian Joe Rogan, also has returned, as have the strenuous -- and gross -- stunts. Back in July, Joe Rogan told “TV Guide Magazine”: “It seems like some sort of bizarro dream world, but I’m looking forward to it. The idea of sitting at home and watching someone else host it would have driven me crazy.”
A: You can see Donald, along with Wayne Knight (“Seinfeld”), Kristen Johnston (“3rd Rock from the Sun”) and David Alan Basche (“The Starter Wife”) on TV Land’s latest original comedy, “The Exes.” The show, which airs Wednesday nights, is a comedy about three divorced men (Donald, Wayne and David) sharing an apartment across the hall from their female divorce attorney (Kristen), who also is their landlord. As 2011 comes to a close and the cheer of the holiday season fills us, we reflect on the joys that the year has brought us, our family, our friends, and our community. At Tidbits of Greater Fort Lauderdale our community is the center of our newspaper. The goal of our family is and has always been to offer a fresh, fun and informative newspaper to our readers every issue, to support our local business community, and to help the cities we serve to promote the atmosphere that makes them the best they can be.
Tasty Penne with Kale, Tomatoes, and Olives Makes 4 servings
The kale in this flavorful combination provides highly absorbable calcium and isothiocyanates which have strong anti-cancer effects. 1 medium onion, chopped 1/4 cup vegetable broth or water 1 bunch kale, cut or torn into approximately 1” pieces (about 5 cups chopped) 2 14.5-ounce cans chopped tomatoes, preferably fireroasted, undrained, or 3 cups freshly chopped tomatoes plus 1/2 cup water or vegetable broth 1/2 cup pitted and sliced Kalamata olives 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 8 ounces dry whole-wheat penne pasta 1/4 cup dairy-free (vegan) parmesan cheese substitute or nutritional yeast (optional) Sauté onion with vegetable broth or water over medium heat for 3 minutes. Add kale and tomatoes and their liquid. Bring to a boil and then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Add olives and parsley. Cook for an additional 5 minutes. Meanwhile, cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and transfer to a serving bowl. Add kale mixture and toss gently. Serve immediately. Sprinkle vegan parmesan substitute or nutritional yeast over top, if using. Stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, leftover Penne with Kale, Tomatoes, and Olives will keep for up to 3 days. Cheezy Garbanzo Spread Makes 8 1/4-cup servings
This delicious spread has the look and taste of spreadable cheese and takes only seconds to prepare. Try it on bread and crackers, in casseroles, and as a filling for quesadillas
Look for jars of water-packed roasted red peppers near the pickles and olives in your supermarket. Tahini is available in the ethnic food section of many supermarkets and in most natural food stores. 1 15-ounce can garbanzo beans 1/2 cup roasted red peppers 3 tablespoons tahini 3 tablespoons lemon juice Drain garbanzo beans, reserving the liquid, and place them in a food processor or blender with red peppers, tahini, and lemon juice. Process until very smooth. If using a blender, you will have to stop it occasionally and push everything down into the blades with a rubber spatula. The mixture should be quite thick, but if it really seems too thick to blend, add a tablespoon or two of the reserved bean liquid. Per 1/4-cup serving

Do you know that the Royals are fishing for a left-handed utility player? Well, the wags down at Dallas (where the meetings were held this year) know! And the fans back in Kansas City could not possibly be more riveted. They are literally queuing up outside the department-store window displays -- even when it’s snowing -- hands deep in their pockets, watching the TV sets through the glass to catch the latest news headlines. • “Set up a phone call between kids and grandparents a week or so before visiting. They can talk about what the kids might like to do. It gives the grandparents time to prepare, and it gives kids a chance to build excitement before the trip.” -- G.R. in Ohio • Clean and disinfect a wood cutting board with salt and lemon juice. Sprinkle the board with a healthy dose of plain salt (kosher or coarse salt works best), and scrub it with a cut half of a lemon. Rinse and clean with soap and water.
“Say!” he yells back, wild eyed, whipped into that junglelike frenzy that the winter meetings bring out in all of us. Because whenever a general manager holds a press conference and says, “We’re here to try and improve the ball club,” it speaks to an ancient, some would say, primal urge to just light fires and dance. And that, of course, is exactly what all of those folks in front of the department store proceed to do (except for the lighting fire part -- I mean, come on, let’s not go too far here). They start off with a little two-step, then they kind of shake their hands in a hand-jive-meets-Michael-Jackson sort of way, before stomping their feet, doing a complete turn before tossing their heads back, throwing their hands in the air, simultaneously dropping to their knees and yelling out: “Bautista!” This ritual is repeated all over the country. In Tampa Bay, they shoot off cannons usually reserved for the annual Gasparilla pirate festival whenever an agent drops a hint that a player might be interested in signing a long-term deal to play for the Rays. (And don’t even ask what they’d do if he’s a left-handed reliever, because, oh boy! Look out! Are those real?) • Hairspray spritzed on the end of a thread will stiffen it long enough to get it through a needle head. You also can thread your needle in front of a surface that’s an opposing color (e.g., a white piece of paper while threading a needle with black thread). • “When shopping for seamless bras, bring a T-shirt that is relatively tight-fitting to wear over the bras. You will know right away if there are seam lines or if the cup is too small. These issues sometimes get overlooked when a bra is worn under a looser shirt.” -- E.D. in Ontario, Canada • Another use for baking soda: It’s a perfect exfoliator. It’s good for the whole body and is pH-neutral, so it won’t overdry skin. To use it, just make a paste and rub onto skin. Rinse, and enjoy the softness. • Cold and flu got you down? Once you clear those symptoms, try gargling with saltwater. It reduces inflammation in your throat and washes away irritants and bacteria.
