UNUSUAL WORDS (continued): • Pregnant women often have to endure allotriophagy, that craving for strange foods. Hopefully, they will choose items that are salutiferous, meaning conducive to health or well-being.

• If you shilly-shally, dodder, quail, haw, demur or shrink before making a decision, you merely hesitate. Let’s say you’re diffident, gelid, reticent, chary or delitescent — you’re considered rather reserved. Now if someone calls you a miscreant, wastral, garmin, reprobate or varlet, consider yourself insulted. You’ve been labeled a scoundrel!

• What do the words coquelicot, tilleul, smaragdine and

Inhaling the dust found near volcanoes is a major cause of this disease. If this word frightens you, you may have hippopotomonstro-squippedaliophobia, the fear of long words.

• When you think of Big Ben, the tall tower surely comes to mind, but the moniker actually applies to the bell housed

• Just as the Clock Tower isn’t the first, neither is Big Ben the first bell. The first one developed a four-inch crack while it was being tested in 1857, and a new one was cast.

Sixteen white horses pulled a carriage carrying the bell to the New Palace Yard. It took 18 hours to raise the bell into the belfry. Late in 1859, two fractures were found in Big Ben. The hammer was replaced with a lighter version, and the bell was rotated so that an undamaged section would be struck. This second bell still resides in the Tower.

• During World War I, the bell was not rung, and the clock was unlit at night to protect it from German Zeppelin attacks. During World War II, the bells were rung, but also from a darkened tower.

It is most likely named after London’s first Commissioner for works, Sir Benjamin Hall, and his name is inscribed on the bell. It was originally intended that it would be called the Royal Victoria bell.

• The tower itself is named, not so creatively, the Clock Tower and is the third-tallest free-standing clock tower in the world. It’s the third tower to be built on Parliament’s grounds. The first was begun in 1288 during the reign of King Edward I and also contained a clock and a bell named Great Edward, which was rung on the hour. This was replaced in 1367 with England’s first public chiming Published on the 1st & 3rd Friday of Every Month! clock. It stood for 340 years.

• When a devastating fire destroyed much of the palace of Westminster in 1834, the plans to rebuild did not include a new tower. These plans were altered to include it in 1836, but actual construction of the current Clock Tower did not begin until 1843. Construction continued for nearly 16 years. When the clock was finally installed, it was discovered that it wouldn’t work because the cast iron minute hands were too heavy! They were replaced with lighter copper hands, and the four-sided clock began

Junk food might be defined as “food that contributes lots of calories but has little nutritional value.” Let’s learn a little more about a few not-so-healthy choices.

• What’s for breakfast? If you choose a bowl of Trix cereal, that product will be 38 percent sugar and will add a little red, yellow and blue dye to your system. How about some Froot Loops? Your portion will be 41 percent sugar, unless you opt for the marshmallow version, which computes to 48 percent sugar and more of those dyes. If you’re cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, you’ll have a 44 percent ratio of sugar.

A healthier choice would be Wheat Chex or Shredded Wheat, both at less than 3 percent sugar.

• In 1930, baker James Dewar was dismayed that the strawberry season was so short; it was limiting his sales of shortcakes. In order to prolong his sales past the fresh fruit season, he experimented with filling h i s sponge cakes with cream. He called them “Twinkle Toes Shoes,” but the name was later shortened to “Twinkies.”

Hostess bakes up about 500 million Twinkies a year, each with about 150 calories. That creamy center is no longer cream at all, but rather mostly Crisco shortening.

• When Pringles debuted in October 1968 in their signature cylindrical can, they were known as Pringles Newfangled

Potato Chips. Other manufacturers immediately objected, claiming that the product was not a potato chip at all, considering that only 42 percent of the snack is potatobased product, with the remainder composed of wheat starch and corn and rice flours. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration ordered the company to change the name to “potato crisps.” The snack was named for a street in Cincinnati, Pringle Drive, spotted by a Procter & Gamble employee.

• The American Dietetic Association recommends a maximum daily caloric intake of 2,000 calories for a sedentary adult and a maximum of 60 grams of fat. Order up a Big Mac with a super-sized Coke and fries, and you’ll ingest 1,460 calories and 58 grams of fat. That’s a pretty scary figure when you consider that the average person visits McDonalds 1,811 times in his or her lifetime. Want to burn off that McDonalds lunch? It will take you seven straight hours of walking to burn off the above meal.

• Although popcorn seems to fill up the box of Cracker Jacks, it’s not the principal ingredient — sugar and corn syrup are. This tasty snack was introduced at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, but the box didn’t contain a toy prize until 1912.

• In addition to being high in calories, soda pop can lead to significant tooth enamel loss. The acids in soft drinks are nearly as corrosive to enamel as battery acid. In an

experiment conducted by dentists, one group of children were given a can of pop every day for three years, and another group, water. The pop drinkers had 50 to 150 percent more tooth decay!

• Snickers, the most popular candy bar in the world, is a 280-calorie treat with 14 grams of fat. It takes 100 tons of peanuts to produce the 15 million bars manufactured daily.

Passing off unhealthful foods as “healthy” is especially troubling at a time when 16.9 million American children and adolescents are obese. A recent study in the journal Pediatrics found that nearly one-quarter of U.S. adolescents have diabetes or pre-diabetes.

Findings: PCRM dietitians found that most so-called “healthful” kids meals are still alarmingly high in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. Restaurants are increasingly marketing “healthy” versions of kids meals, but often these meals feature the same unhealthy entrées paired with healthier sides, like apple slices instead of french fries. Many of the fast-food chains scrutinized in the report are part of Kids LiveWell, a National Restaurant Association program launched last year that is supposed to promote nutritious options for kids at chain restaurants.

Last year, top fast-food chains including McDonald’s and Burger King announced plans to make kids meals healthier.

Nearly a year after those announcements, nutrition experts with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) evaluated kids meals from these and other fastfood restaurants and found that many are still loaded with fat, cholesterol, and sodium. These “healthy” meals put children at risk for obesity, diabetes, cancer, and other diet-related diseases.

The Five Worst “Healthy” Fast-Food Kids Meals

Burger King, Chick-fil-A, Denny’s, Sonic, and 49 other restaurant chains with more than 25,000 locations around the country are members of Kids LiveWell. To participate, restaurants need only offer one “healthful” entrée and one “healthful” side dish. Some of the restaurants do offer fruits and vegetables as side dishes. But typical offerings include bacon at Cracker Barrel, sirloin steak at Outback Steak House, and grilled cheese at Au Bon Pain.

McDonald’s does not participate in Kids LiveWell. But last July, the fast-food giant also announced plans to make its Happy Meals more nutritious. This spring, McDonald’s launched commercials to emphasize the “benefits” of eating Happy Meals. But the three Happy Meal entrée choices it offers are inherently high in fat, cholesterol, and sodium: hamburger, cheeseburger, and chicken nuggets.

McDonald’s did introduce apple slices and smaller packets of french fries as side dish options in Happy Meals.

Key Factors: PCRM dietitians looked at several key factors to determine the healthfulness of each item: High Fat Content: Diets high in fat have been linked by scientific research to increased risk of cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. High-fat, low-fiber foods boost the hormones that promote cancer. Specifically, diets high in meat, dairy products, fried foods, and vegetable oils cause an increase in the production of estrogen. Extra estrogen increases cancer risk in the breast and other organs sensitive to sex hormones. In January 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and prevention found that 20 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 19 have at least one abnormal lipid level (LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, or triglycerides).

Among overweight and obese adolescents, those rates were higher, with 22 percent of overweight and 43 percent of obese children having one or more abnormality. Trans fats raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Naturally occurring trans fats are only contained in animal products. Fat contains 9 calories per gram and is typically more abundant in animal products, especially saturated fat, which significantly increases bad cholesterol.

Sodium: Diets high in sodium can increase the risk of high blood pressure, a condition that can lead to cardiovascular disease and kidney problems. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends that children’s intake of sodium should be less than 640 to 740 milligrams (depending on age) at lunch and less than 430 to 500 milligrams (depending on age) at breakfast. Some health experts suggest consuming less than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

Cholesterol: Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in the bloodstream and in the body’s cells. Every animal cell contains cholesterol as it is a necessary component

of the cell’s membrane. The body naturally makes more than enough cholesterol to serve this biological function.

High blood-cholesterol levels are strongly linked to risk of heart disease. High levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and low levels of HDL (“good”) cholesterol increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Saturated fats and trans fats both increase LDL levels. Consuming large amounts of cholesterol in one’s diet may eventually lead to reduced heart function. Fiber helps to remove blood cholesterol and is only found in plant foods.

Red and Processed Meats: Consuming processed meats increases the risk of colorectal cancer, according to a large number of studies, including the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study. A new study from the Harvard School of Public Health says that a daily serving of processed meats, like hot dogs, sausages, and bacon, increases the risk of premature death by 20 percent. Each daily serving of red meat increased the risk of dying by 12 percent.

Detailed Results: PCRM dietitians obtained nutrient information by reviewing the company websites. Dietitians evaluated each item based on data including the item’s calories, total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, and sugar.

Chick-fil-A Kids Grilled Nuggets Kids Meal Six grilled nuggets, waffle potato fries, and low-fat chocolate milk 570 calories, 19 grams of fat, 4 grams of saturated fat, 75 milligrams of cholesterol, 1,150 milligrams of sodium, 23 grams of sugars Earlier this year, Chick-fil-A added grilled chicken nuggets to its kids meals menu, touting them as a “healthier” alternative to fried chicken nuggets. But the grilled chicken nuggets alone contribute 840 milligrams of sodium. And combined with low-fat chocolate milk and waffle potato fries, this meal is also loaded with fat and cholesterol. Grilled chicken is the largest source of PhIP, a potent carcinogen that may play a role in the development of breast, prostate, and other cancers. Because of the high cholesterol levels in meals like this, the American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed a recommendation that all children have a cholesterol screening performed between the ages of 9 and 11.

McDonald’s Cheeseburger Happy Meal Cheeseburger, fries, apple slices, and low-fat white milk 520 calories, 20 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, 50 milligrams of cholesterol, 920 milligrams of sodium, 22 grams of sugars McDonald’s announced last year that it would make its kids meals more healthful. But McDonald’s Cheeseburger Happy Meal won’t make anybody’s heart happy. The cheeseburger is loaded with unhealthful fat and cholesterol, which contribute to childhood obesity. And the meal has more sodium than a child should eat in a meal, according to guidelines from the IOM. (Continued on page 9)

Thai Vegetables Makes about 8 1-cup servings

This dish is colorful and mildly spicy. Serve it with flavorful basmati or jasmine rice or with Ginger Noodles.

1 cup water, divided 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 onion, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 small sweet potatoes or yams, peeled and diced 1 15-ounce can crushed tomatoes 2 teaspoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 - 1 teaspoon crushed red pepper 1/2 teaspoon turmeric 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger, or 2 teaspoons minced or grated fresh ginger 1 15-ounce can garbanzo beans, undrained 1 zucchini, diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into thin strips 2 teaspoons lemon zest 1 tablespoon lemon juice Heat 1/2 cup of water and soy sauce in a large pot. Add onion and garlic and cook 5 minutes.

Add sweet potatoes, tomatoes, coriander, cumin, red pepper flakes, turmeric, ginger, and 1/2 cup of water. Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, until sweet potatoes are just tender, about 15 minutes.

Add garbanzo beans and their liquid, zucchini, red bell pepper, and grated lemon peel. Cover and simmer until zucchini is just tender, about 5 minutes.

Stir in lemon juice.

Traditional strudel dough is often hand-pulled. However, using phyllo dough lets you make this Austrian treat in half the time. For variety, other fruits, such as pears, apricots, or plums, can be used instead of apples.

2 1/2 pounds slightly sour apples 1/4 cup soft non-hydrogenated, dairy-free margarine, plus enough to spread over dough 3/4 cup bread crumbs 3/4 cup granulated sugar or rock sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 teaspoon cinnamon 2 tablespoons rum 1/2 cup raisins 1 pound vegan phyllo dough 1 powdered sugar, to sprinkle over baked strudel Preheat oven to 400°F. Peel apples, cut into quarters, remove seeds, then cut into 1/8-inch slices. Heat 1/4 cup margarine in a pan, then add bread crumbs and roast until golden brown. Let cool.

Mix apples with sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, rum, and raisins.

Spread margarine evenly over phyllo dough, and then layer bread crumbs on top, followed by apple mixture, leaving a 1/2-inch margin on all sides. Roll the strudel tightly and close the ends. Place on a greased baking sheet. Spread more margarine over top of the strudel. Bake for about 40 minutes.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Slice into 8 pieces. Serve hot or cold.

De-Cluttering For Mental Health Q: My husband has claimed pretty much the entire garage with his workshop, tools and lawn-care equipment. A lot of it is necessary, but he just keeps collecting stuff. Or at least, you know, walk around without tripping over stuff. How can I get him to clean out the place without starting a feud?

The former Norma Jean Baker is still one of the highest-earning and recognizable images from Hollywood’s history. Today many people believe her supposed suicide was a carefully orchestrated murder to keep her from exposing Kennedy secrets.

Some of her personal effects were sold recently for more than $6 million at auction, and in May, a 25-foot statue of MM by artist Stewart Johnson was erected in Palm Springs, Calif. It’s the scene from “The Seven Year Itch” of her standing on the subway grating with her dress blowing up. “Forever Marilyn” weighs 34,300 pounds, has legs 14 feet high and a head-and-torso section 10 feet high and 7 feet wide. It’s on display for a year where PS Resorts plans the Desert Fashion Plaza revitalization. The statue cost $78,000 in private donations to assemble, insure and transport from Chicago, where it was formally displayed.

Do Pets Really Need Vaccinations?

DEAR JANINE: I think you should talk to your pets’ veterinarian before making a decision that could negatively affect their health, and maybe yours.

Vaccinations don’t just protect pets against rabies. They also receive vaccinations, particularly as puppies and kittens, for distemper, feline leukemia, parvovirus and a number of other serious and potentially fatal diseases.

There are diseases that can also pass between pets and humans, and vaccinations can prevent them.

“Pets can easily contract Giardia and Leptospirosis from standing water or damp grass,” said Dr. Meg Connelly of the Willard Veterinary Clinic in Quincy, Mass. “Many dogs love swimming in water, sniffing around in the mud or rolling in the wet grass. Unfortunately, without immunization protection, these pets are at risk for contracting a serious or even fatal illness that can easily be spread to humans.”

Keeping shots up to date is one of the best ways to prevent both your pets and you from becoming ill. And even though they seem pricey up front, they are nothing compared to the cost of medical care if a pet should become ill from a disease it could have been vaccinated against.
