VALENTINE’S DAY (continued):
• In Victorian days, young women used their fans to convey secret messages to their beaus. Drawing her fan across the cheek meant “I love you,” while twirling it in her right hand gave the warning, “We are being watched.” • Esther A. Howland was the first person to commercially manufacture Valentines, beginning in 1847. Considered the “Mother of the Valentine,” her original creations featured real lace and colorful ribbons. She eventually expanded her business into sales of $100,000 annually.
with wings, a bow and a quiver of arrows, and one shot is said to cause his “victims” to fall in love. Other legends represent Cupid with two sets of arrows — one goldtipped set for love and another lead-tipped set, which brings about hatred.
• In the 1600s, perfume was made by placing rose petals in white wine, adding fragrant herbs and spices and allowing the mixture to ferment for two weeks. •
Thinking about chocolates for your sweetie? You’ll be glad to know that chocolate ranks high in food value and contains several vitamins and minerals. It was also the belief of the ancient Aztec Indians that the cacao bean was a source of wisdom and knowledge because the seeds had been brought to their land from Paradise. • Before it is molded into bars, milk chocolate is stirred by machines for 72 hours to achieve the smoothest chocolate possible.
• According to a French tradition, a young woman lets her admirer know whether his affections are welcome by what she feeds him on Valentine’s Day. If she feeds him an egg dish, the answer is definitely “No,” while something with apple or pear signifies “Yes.” • Those colorful little candy conversation hearts have been around since 1866, when they were first manufactured by the New England Confectionery Company, or NECCO, as the company is more commonly known. Originally called “motto hearts,” they contained messages such as “Be Good,” “Be True” and “Kiss Me.” NECCO began updating their phrases in recent years, adding “Call Me,” “Fax Me,” “Email Me” and starting in 2011, one in 80 hearts reads “Tweet Me.” NECCO makes eight billion Sweethearts every year, selling about 100,000 pounds of them every day between January 1 and February 14. • If you plan to give your Valentine a bottle of perfume, you might want to know that one of the ingredients in many perfumes is coal tar. And in order to prolong the fragrance, manufacturers add substances taken from beavers, male musk deer and sperm whales. Still other ingredients are

derived from turpentine. Most perfumes are produced synthetically using chemical substances, and even the best perfumes contain only about 10 percent flower petal oil dissolved in alcohol. It takes about 10 million jasmine flowers to produce only 2.2 pounds of fragrant oil. Although a perfume may smell like one specific fragrance, it can actually be a blend of up to 500 ingredients.
• In the late 1850s came the “penny dreadfuls,” Valentines with insulting and derogatory verses. They were printed on cheap paper and designed to make the recipient feel dreadful, hence their name. They were also known as “vinegar Valentines,” due to their sour or acidic messages.

• About 36 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate will be given to sweethearts this year. But Valentine’s Day is far from the biggest day of the year for candy purchases. Halloween is first, followed by Easter, then Christmas. • For its first 68 years, the Hershey Chocolate Company operated with no advertising budget. It did not advertise its products until July 1970. • Egyptians were the first candy makers 3,000 years ago when they mixed fruits and nuts with honey. • If your Valentine asks you for a Pascali, a Chrysler Imperial, a Rubaiyat, a Floradora, a Montezuma or an Iceberg, she’s asking for a rose from the list of the more popular varieties. The Society of American Florists estimates the number of roses produced for Valentine’s Day at around 200 million. About 43 percent of flowers given are red roses, and 29 percent are other colors of roses. The remaining gifts are mixed flowers. • Cupid, Roman mythology’s god of love, was the son of the goddess Venus and the god Mars. He’s often depicted

WASHINGTON MONUMENT Pointing to the sky at the west end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C. is the Washington Monument, the tallest structure in our nation’s capital. Read along and discover some enlightening information about this tribute to America’s first president. • Although George Washington didn’t die until 1799, as early as 1783, Congress proposed a monument to him in the form of an equestrian statue. The site was even selected in the city’s 1791 survey plan. Yet it wasn’t until 1836, after $28,000 in donations had been raised, that a competition for architectural designs was announced. • Robert Mills’ design was chosen for the monument, which featured an obelisk surrounded by a colonnade on which a statue of Washington would stand. Inside the colonnade, the statues of 30 other Revolutionary War heroes were to be included. • Mills’ design was criticized because it would cost more than $1 million to build, over $21 million in today’s dollars. In addition, the selected location was deemed not stable enough to support such a heavy structure. The location was changed and the design altered to an Egyptian obelisk, reduced from a height of 600 feet (183 m) to 555 feet (169 m). The cornerstone wasn’t laid for another 12 years.

Can’t Get Enough Tidbits? LOVE AND MARRIAGE “Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing,” said the German writer Goethe. Let’s take a look at that strange phenomenon that “makes the world go ‘round.” • Courtship during Victorian times had definite rules of etiquette, and according to one authority of those times, the lady “is not to allow the young gentleman to kiss you until he has proposed marriage.” Of course, there were those who disagreed, such as the expert who advised that, “The prudent maiden should not allow her lover to kiss her even after their engagement. Not until after marriage should such a favor be granted.”
Charlton Heston, 65 years. • Minnie Pearl had these thoughts on marriage: “Getting married’s a lot like getting into a tub of hot water. After you get used to it, it ain’t so hot.” • Age seems to have nothing to do with marriage success.

The Five Worst Cookbooks of 2011
A report from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Some popular cookbooks of 2011, including highprofile recipe collections from celebrity chefs, encourage Americans to fill up on high-fat, meat-heavy meals, even as the country struggles with record levels of obesity and diabetes. Dietitians with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine reviewed the year’s new cookbooks and named the five worst offenders. Here are the five worst cookbooks of 2011: Jamie Oliver’s Meals in Minutes: A Revolutionary Approach to Cooking Good Food Fast By Jamie Oliver Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution aimed to attack obesity, heart disease, and diabetes in America. But in his new book, Jamie Oliver’s Meals in Minutes, the quick meals are often as high in fat and cholesterol as fast food. The cookbook’s Meatball Sandwich has more fat than a Big Mac and more than double the calories, cholesterol, and sodium found in the signature McDonald’s sandwich. One serving of Oliver’s Meatball Sandwich contains 1,182 calories, 47 grams of fat (including 18.5 grams of saturated fat), 185 milligrams of cholesterol, and 2,352 milligrams of sodium, according to a nutritional analysis based on estimates by PCRM dietitians. Other high-fat, high-cholesterol recipes in the cookbook include the Seared Pork Fillet & Catherine Wheel Sausage with Meaty Mushroom Sauce, which is packed with pork tenderloin, breakfast sausage links, smoked bacon, pork kidney, and heavy cream. And you don’t need an ingredient list to see the problems with recipes for Liver & Bacon and Pork Chops & Crispy Crackling. A review published in the journal Diabetologia found that people who ate the most meat had the highest risk of type 2 diabetes. Each serving of this sandwich contains a substantial amount of processed meat, which poses serious health concerns. The cookbook contains a number of other processed meat-heavy recipes, including Blazy’s Pepperoni-Studded Lasagna—loaded with 2 cups of pepperoni and 2 pounds of Italian sausage. Heterocyclic amines (HCAs), a family of mutagenic and cancer-causing compounds, are produced during the grilling of many animal products, including chicken, beef, pork, and fish. Nutritional Shocker: The Cook’s Illustrated Cookbook More than 50 pages of recipes featuring grilled meat, which increases cancer risk. The Neelys’ Celebration Cookbook: Down-Home Meals for Every Occasion By Pat Neely, Gina Neely, and Ann Volkwein This book’s introduction says that: “you can’t enjoy the meal without an open heart.” But increased risk of open heart surgery may also be on the menu for those indulging in high-fat foods. High-cholesterol dairy products are found in many of the Celebration Cookbook’s recipes, including Bourbon Bread Pudding, which is saturated with butter, half-and-half, whole milk, and eggs. Pat’s Deep-Fried Cornish Game Hens calls for 3 quarts of buttermilk, and Fried Catfish takes 2 cups of buttermilk. Dairy products are the number-one source of saturated fat in the American diet, and decreasing saturated fat intake will reduce your risk of developing heart disease, according the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. each, to the right and then to the left. Do the exercise three times a day. Five months is a long time to put up with back pain. I’m not sure if self-treatment will do much for you. You need a doctor’s intervention, along with physical therapy.
Sciatica: Big Nerve Can Be Big Problem DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 78-year-old woman, and five months ago I came down with sciatica in my left leg underneath the buttock. It’s very painful. I’d like to know if there is something that can be done. -- S.M. ANSWER: The sciatic (sigh-ATTIC) nerve is the body’s longest and largest nerve. It springs from nerve rootlets that emerge from the spinal cord in the lower back. Those rootlets intertwine to form this big nerve. It travels from the back, through the buttocks and down the leg to the foot. Anything that presses on or irritates the nerve in its long course gives rise to sciatica (sigh-ATTIC-uh), painful inflammation of the nerve. A bulging back disk can press on the nerve. Arthritic spurs on the spine are another source of irritation. A collapse of a backbone from osteoporosis is another trigger for pain, and the pain can be in the lower back, the buttocks or down the leg to the foot. Have you tried Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain relief? Aleve, Advil, Motrin and the many other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs dull pain and quiet inflammation. Icing the painful back area for 10 to 15 minutes three times a day is another way to numb pain. If ice doesn’t work, turn to heat -- hot compresses or a heating pad. Stretching the back might take pressure off the nerve. Sit on a firm chair with feet on the floor and knees shoulderwidth apart. Turn slightly to the left. Then, with your right arm dangling down between the knees and left arm dangling down on the outside of the left knee, bend down to the floor as far as you can and hold that position for five seconds. Straighten up and reverse the process by turning to your right and arranging your arms with the right arm outside the right knee and the left arm between the knees. If this exercise hurts, stop. If it doesn’t, perform five bends
The booklet on back pain delves more deeply into its causes and treatments. To order a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 303W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Some time ago, you answered a letter from an 80-year-old lady who asked if she still needed to have mammograms. I say an unqualified yes. Two years ago, at the age of 82 1/2, my mammogram detected cancer. Surgery was followed by radiation. Two years later, I am feeling fine and doing well. -- A.S. ANSWER: Experts argue about the value of mammograms late in life. Stories like yours make me side with those who promote having mammograms as long as a woman is in reasonable health. If a woman has an estimate of living at least four more years, mammograms are a good idea. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2012 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Note: If you need to turn off the water supply to the entire house or part of the house in order to turn off the heater’s supply, open the taps on the other sinks in your house.
By Samantha Mazzotta
Why Drain a Hot-Water Heater? Q: A neighbor of mine said that he drains his hot water heater twice a year to keep it clear. Won’t draining the heater damage it? -- Sal P., Tallahassee, Fla. A: Actually, draining the water heater can help it heat water more efficiently and even extend its service life. The trick is to turn it off and let the water cool for a few hours. Then, shut off the water supply to the heater so it won’t refill as you drain it.
Attach a length of garden hose to the water-heater drain spigot, just long enough to comfortably hang over the edge of the bucket you’ll use to catch the drained water. (If a utility sink is nearby, that’s an even better option; run the hose to the sink.) Turn the spigot on slowly, until it’s fully open. Drain the tank as far as possibleÑthis could mean detaching the hose and catching the last of the water in a bucket. Then, close the spigot and turn the water supply back on to fill the tank, and turn on the heater.

remove sediment that can build up due to a number of factors. It’s not always done in the wintertime, but if you have a day or two that is above freezing and you can let the heater cool overnight, go for it. Setting the water heater’s temperature to “low” or “warm” -- just below 120 F -- will save on the cost of heating and prevent accidental scalding from water that’s too hot. Be a Responsible Pet Owner
Compassionate, Caring & Professional Veterinary Medicine
The Animal Medical Center & Bird Clinic of Hollywood
February is Responsible Pet Owners Month, and while I sometimes grouse about events that designate a specific period of the year to do something that should obviously be done every single day, I think it’s a worthy way to enlighten new pet owners or those thinking about getting a pet on how to care for that pet. So, how can you be a responsible pet owner?
FREE OFFICE VISIT
With Early Detection Health Profile (A $50 Value)
If you’re considering getting a pet: --Study and learn all you can about the pet or breed you’re interested in. --Consider adopting from a shelter or rescue. --Avoid buying dogs from puppy mills, at flea markets or other sketchy places.
--At dog parks, follow the posted rules. Owners who don’t follow rules can put the park at risk of being shut down. Don’t be that guy. There are, of course, many other ways to be a responsible pet owner. But this is a good time to review the way you care for your pets, the routines you’ve fallen into, the training you’ve meant to start -- and to plan new fun and activities for your pets and family.
--Teach your children how to properly care for pets and how to play responsibly with them. --Provide regular, daily obedience training to your dog. --Keep your cat indoors. --When taking your dog out for a walk, follow your town’s leash laws and pick up after it.

Q: I remember seeing pictures of Julianne Moore in some entertainment magazines dressed up as Sarah Palin. Was that for a movie? If so, when will it be out? I’d love to see it. -- Margaret W., via e-mail A: Julianne does indeed star as the 2008 vice-presidential hopeful in the HBO movie “Game Change,” which is based on the 2010 book of the same name. The movie premieres on Saturday, March 10, and also stars Ed Harris as Sen. John McCain and Woody Harrelson as campaign chair Steve Schmidt, along with Peter MacNicol, Sarah Paulson and Ron Livingston. The movie will mainly track the actions of the Republican Party during the 2008 elections, while the book devotes equal time to both Republicans and Democrats.

Would you know when that might be? -- Brad F., via e-mail A: Well, Brad, I just happen to have that little nugget of info -- and I am willing to share. The next season of the medieval-fantasy series begins (no fooling) April 1 at 9 p.m., and like the first season, the second season will be 10 episodes long. And Lena Headey (who plays Ceresei) tells us that season two will bring even more drama (Is that possible?). The show also stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys, Nikolai Coster-Waldau as Jaime, Kit Harington as Jon and Michelle Fairley as Catelyn.

The “they” in that statement was basically all of us. We were all enablers. But what could we do? Ali had been given the best advice, and he chose to keep going. Ali was warned after his third fight with Ken Norton (one of the hardest hitters in boxing history, a fighter who had previously broken Ali’s jaw) to hang up the gloves. The

“would have no shot at a normal life” after his career. But Ali promised easy fights. Pacheco stayed on for one last bout, a brutal mess of a war with Ernie Shavers, a fighter with 54 wins and 52 knockouts (still widely considered to be the best boxer to have never won a title) and somehow won the decision. But Pacheco had seen enough. He jumped ship. “[Shavers] was about the strongest guy in boxing,” Pacheco said at the time. “That was easy?” I watched Ali get pummeled by Larry Holmes, and hang on just long enough to lose a decision to Trevor Berbick. Before the Berbick fight, which took place 30 years ago, it was already too clear that we were sending the guy to the gallows for our own amusement. Unable to talk at press conferences, he used to perform magic tricks.
Ali Hurt More than Himself Burgundy carpet, beige couches and reheated pepperoni pizza from the night before, television tuned to WABC to watch the Wide World of Sports ... that was a typical Saturday spent with my father during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. It’s hard to understand now, in the SportsCenter and Yahoo Sports world, but for the sports fan of the Jimmy Carter era, it was Sports Illustrated, the back of your local evening tabloid newspaper if you lived in a town lucky enough to have one, and the Howard Cosell hovel that was ABC’s “Wide World of Sports.” And there could be no Cosell without a peculiarly great heavyweight boxer by the name of Muhammad Ali. By this time, Ali -- the one shown on our Sylvania cabinet television -- was not “the Greatest,” at least not in the way my father used to speak of him. I watched him lose three out of four fights. I saw a lumbering, slurring man that people cheered on relentlessly even though he was clearly losing, and laughed at all of his jokes even though they weren’t funny. Maybe only a child could see the truth - that there was something wrong -- but I’m not too sure about that. My mother noticed and called what “they” were doing to him “barbaric.”
My dad would just shake his head. Ali, he explained to me, used to perform magic in the ring. “He’s only hurting himself,” he would say. It was painful to watch. But I could see, sitting on that rug next to his chair as my mother read her book, refusing to watch, that Ali was hurting everyone else in the room, too.
Mayo Clinic said his muscles weren’t in sync with his brains, resulting in slurred speech. His own doctor, Ferdie Pacheco, sent him medical exam results and warned Ali that if he continued fighting, he

Finding Lower-Rate Credit Cards If your credit is solid but you’re paying higher credit-card interest rates than you’d like, don’t expect the credit-card company to lower your rate without a request from you. Even then it’s likely you’ll be stuck. But you have another option: credit unions. It’s likely that a credit union will be your best bet for a credit card you’ll want to keep long term. The National Association of Federal Credit Unions [www.nafcu.org] wrote in a recent news release that credit unions have an upper limit of 18 percent for both credit cards and loans. Their average credit-card interest rate is 12 percent, with some as low as 9 percent. When it comes to fees, credit unions are generally much lower. Credit unions are not-for-profit, so they’re not out to charge a fee for every loophole they can get away with. You’ll find ATMs, good service and a friendly staff because as an account holder, you are a member-owner. If you want to look for credit unions you’re eligible to join and see a comparison between their rates and banks, go online to www.culookup.com. (Tip: On the lookup screen, it asks for your whole street address. Don’t give it. You’ll get just as much information by putting in just your ZIP code.) You’ll be shown a map of credit unions in your area. On the left side, click on Compare CU Rates for comparisons on nearly any financial product: car and boat loans, adjustableand fixed-rate mortgages, money-market accounts, credit cards and certificates of deposit. The site also has a number of calculators for home, credit, retirement, savings and auto.
by Samantha Weaver • It was 19th-century German philosopher, composer and poet Friedrich Nietzsche who made the following sage observation: “At times one remains faithful to a cause only because its opponents do not cease to be insipid.” • Despite all the cartoons you’ve seen throughout your life, rabbits generally prefer greens to carrots, and mice would rather eat grains and fruit than cheese.
Remember: Don’t cancel your other credit cards if you take a new one for a better deal. Bring the balance to zero on old card, and then let the card sit unused. Your credit score is partially determined by the total amount of credit available to you versus the percentage of that amount you have used. If you have an unused card with a $10,000 availability and you cancel that account, the percentage of your total availability drops. As the percentage of credit you use rises (after you cancel a card), your credit score drops. Keep your percentage under 30 percent.

• If you ever make a trip to Italy (lucky you!) and visit the town of Modena, be sure to go to the bell tower. There you might see an item that is, to the best of my knowledge, unique in the world: a wooden bucket that started a war. In 1325 a group of soldiers from the then-city-state of Modena raided rival city-state Bologna and returned home with the bucket. Greatly desiring to get the bucket back, Bologna declared war. The war raged on for years, but Bologna never did get its bucket back.

“Almost President: The Men Who Lost the Race But Changed the Nation” by Scott Farris (Lyons Press, $24.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox How different would our country be today if Adlai Stevenson had beaten Dwight Eisenhower in 1952, Barry Goldwater had won in 1964 or Al Gore had been inaugurated president after the election of 2000? Although these men didn’t get to move into the White House, they nevertheless helped transform our nation. Scott Farris, a former bureau chief for United Press International and a political columnist, has covered several national campaigns and even tried to win a congressional race in Wyoming in 1998, a seat vacated by Dick Cheney. After being defeated, he began thinking about the role played by losing candidates in a democracy. The result is this fascinating book. Farris profiles nine presidential also-rans: including threetime losers Henry Clay and William Jennings Bryan, Stephen Douglas, Al Smith, Thomas E. Dewey, George McGovern and Ross Perot.
One of the more interesting men profiled is Henry Clay, who once stated that he would rather be right than president. Clay, one the greatest legislators in U.S. history, was a Southerner by birth and a Westerner by choice, but his real genius was a political strategy designed to bind the nation together and reduce the concept of sectionalism. In arguing for the Compromise of 1850, Clay stated, “I know no South, no North, no East, no West, to which I owe my allegiance.” Could the Civil War have been avoided if he had been elected president in 1844? This is one of the intriguing “what ifs” in this richly detailed book. As Farris points out, the losers of national campaigns often had more foresight than the winners, and being ahead of the times sometimes contributed to their defeat. Even a failed presidential campaign can trigger changes. For example, new political alignments form and barriers are broken down, allowing more groups -- from Catholics to women -- to participate. This is why historians find even unsuccessful campaigns so intriguing.
