It’s not just the home of the U.S. President; the White House has also been the site of diplomatic decisions, weddings, births and Easter egg hunts. This week, Tidbits goes behind the scenes at the Executive Mansion. • Because the First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia in 1774, that city was considered the first U.S. capital. Since several other cities were the meeting place for Congress over the next 26 years, they were all technically regarded as the capital city. These cities included Baltimore and Annapolis, Maryland, Lancaster and York, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Trenton, New Jersey and New York City. While most meeting places were a court house, state house, or city hall, home to Congress in Trenton for seven weeks was the French Arms Tavern. • The U.S. Constitution authorized a 100-square-mile plot of land for the seat of U.S. government. In 1791, George Washington chose the land in Maryland and a smaller section in Virginia. He and the city planner Pierre L’Enfant selected the site for the president’s residence, the site known today as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. • L’Enfant called the area the Capital City. To Thomas Jefferson it was Federal Town, while Washington referred to it as Federal City. The commissioners who were appointed to obtain the property gave the name of Washington to the city. • The name of James Hoban is not a well-known one, but his accomplishment lives on. When Thomas Jefferson organized a competition to obtain the best design for the President’s House, a striking entry was submitted by this Irish immigrant. Jefferson himself presented his own design; however, he and seven others were outdone by Hoban, who went on to design many other public buildings on the Eastern seaboard. turn the page for more!

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) Fluorescent Tubes and CFLs contain small amounts of mercury which need to be disposed of through the County’s HHW program. Other small mercury-containing devices such as thermometers and thermostats are also accepted. If you accidentally break a fluorescent bulb or tube, safely dispose of it by following these guidelines: 1) open a window and immediately ventilate the room, allowing at least 30 minutes before cleanup; 2) wear disposable gloves to pick up fragments and place them into a double bag; 3) take materials to an HHW facility or dispose of in your regular trash; 4) wash your hands thoroughly.

Earn Extra Cash With Flea Markets If you want to make some extra cash, investigate spring and summer flea markets. Whether it’s a one-time thing (perhaps to de-clutter) or as a potential source of ongoing income, flea markets have one thing that yard sales don’t: You’re likely to have many more people wandering through. There’s quite a variety of flea-market venues. Some are run every weekend, others once a month. The size of spaces vary. Tables are frequently provided (for as little as $10 a day), and you bring a canopy, should you want one. Indoor locked venues often let you leave your merchandise there overnight. Here’s what to do in advance: --If you have a choice of locations for your table, check the traffic patterns of people walking through. Where will you get the most passersby? --Ask about setup and takedown times, limits on items that can be sold, and any discounts for paying in advance for multiple weekends. --Note what the other vendors are selling and at what price. You’ll need to be competitive. Your pricing depends on what your intentions are: Do you want to de-clutter and make fast cash? Or do you want to set up a regular business? --Decide whether you want to stick to one type of merchandise or put out a variety. You’ll find anything and everything at a flea market. --Arrange for help. Have at least one other person at your booth or table to keep an eye on the cashbox, make transactions and relieve you when needed. --Gather your supplies: • Plastic bags, so your buyers can carry away their purchases. • Pricing stickers. • Pen and paper. • Tape to hang any posters. • Scissors. • A table cover -- a plastic or paper picnic table cover will be perfect. • A canopy, if it’s allowed at that venue (ask around and see if you can borrow one). • A chair. • Portable shelving -- for smaller items you don’t want on the table. • Change and small bills. If you make enough money on a trial weekend, consider doing it on a regular basis. You’ll learn over time what will sell. Scout yard sales and businesses that are closing for items you can sell at a profit, or decide on an unfilled niche. THE WHITE HOUSE (continued):

• The first cornerstone of the house was laid in the fall of 1792, and it took until late 1798 to complete the exterior. While George Washington supervised the construction, he never lived in it. John Adams was elected president in 1797, and he and his wife Abigail were the first residents, moving in when the home was nearly complete in 1800. They only lived there four months before Adams’ successor, Jefferson, took residence. • Only one U.S. president has had his wedding in the White House. In 1886, Grover Cleveland married 21-yearold Frances Folsom in the Blue Room, and made her the youngest First Lady in U.S. history. Seven years later, she gave birth to daughter Esther, the only child of a president ever to be born in the house. But Esther wasn’t the first baby to be born there. That honor belonged to Thomas Jefferson’s grandson, born to Jefferson’s daughter during his term of office. • The East Room has served many different purposes during its history. Abigail Adams used it as a laundry room. During the Civil War, it served as quarters for Union troops. Years later, Jackie Kennedy used it as a theater for the performing arts. It was also where the bodies of both Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy lay in state following their assassinations. • Over the years, presidents have added what were deemed necessities to their home. Millard Fillmore established a permanent library during his term in the mid-1850s. He was also responsible for the installation of the first bathtub with running water. William Howard Taft, portly at nearly 350 pounds, had a custom-made bathtub installed, large enough to hold four average men. Electric lights were put in during the term of Benjamin Harrison, but neither he nor his wife ever touched the switches. They were both afraid of being shocked and called their servants when they wanted the lights turned on or off. • Teddy Roosevelt moved in with six children and found the home too small to contain them. He ordered the construction of a temporary building for additional office space for the staff. The greenhouses and conservatories were torn down to make room for this temporary addition that turned out to be permanent. Today it is known as the West Wing. • William Howard Taft was responsible for the first Oval Office in 1909, the official office of the president. Prior to that time, the office was rectangular. It was later rebuilt following the damage of the 1929 fire. In 1934, FDR added a second floor to the West Wing and had a new Oval Office created, the one in use today. At one time, the present Oval Office was filled with clotheslines! • In 1933, a March of Dimes campaign funded the addition of a swimming pool at the White House for the therapy of polio-stricken Franklin Roosevelt. The pool was built in the old laundry rooms. Today, this is the site of the White House Press Room, built over the top of the pool, which still exists underneath the floor, accessible through a trapdoor. The deep end is under the press secretary’s podium, while the camera crews stand atop the shallow end. • Harry Truman spent much of his presidency renovating the majority of the building, which had been deemed in danger of collapse. While the living area was entirely gutted and refurbished from 1949 to 1951, Harry and Bess resided across the street at Blair House, the official guesthouse for the president. Expanded over the years, this “guest house” has 70,000 square feet and includes 119 rooms, 14 guest bedrooms, four dining rooms and 35 bathrooms, as well as a fully equipped hair salon. • The six levels of the White House are accessible via three elevators or eight staircases, and contain 132 rooms and 35 bathrooms. There are 412 doors, 147 windows and 28 fireplaces in its 55,000 square feet of floor space. It sits on just over 18 acres, and has its own tennis court, running track, pool and movie theater. Richard Nixon added a single-lane bowling alley during his term. A painter needs about 570 gallons of paint to cover the exterior.

hurts. The method chosen for wart removal must not leave a scar. A scar on the bottom of the foot causes more trouble than does a wart.

WARTS OFTEN FADE ON THEIR OWN DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Would you address plantar warts? I’ve been told they’re from a virus in the body and that nothing can be done for them or keep them from recurring. Is this so? -- D.W. ANSWER: All warts, wherever they are, come from an infection with one of the more than 100 human papillomaviruses -- HPV. Individual members of the HPV family have a preference for particular body sites. Some head for the soles of the feet to cause plantar warts. “Plantar” is derived from a Latin word meaning “sole of the foot.” If a plantar wart isn’t kicking up a fuss, it can be left alone. It’s not going to do any harm. Many such warts disappear without any treatment. Some can return, and there is not a whole lot to do about preventing a second visit. However, there is much to do about a plantar wart that

Look on the shelves of any drugstore for wart-removal products that contain salicylic acid, and follow the directions for application carefully. Be patient. It takes more than one application to get rid of the wart. Duct tape sometimes works. That’s right -- duct tape, the tape you buy in a hardware store. Cover the wart with a piece of it for six days. Remove the tape, soak the foot and then gently rub the wart with a pumice stone, obtainable in drugstores. Reapply the tape after 12 hours. You might have to repeat this procedure for two months before the wart leaves. If home remedies bring no success, the family doctor can step in with more involved treatments. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past six months, I have had no energy. I teach third grade. My doctor checked my thyroid gland, and it turns out it’s not working well. I am now taking replacement thyroid hormone. How long does it take for me to recover my former energy? Also, my cholesterol was high. Is that part of this deal? -- M.O. ANSWER: It can take three to six months for your hormone level to reach a normal plateau. That’s when you’ll feel like your old self again. A person with low thyroid hormone often has a rise in blood cholesterol. The level will fall as soon as the replacement hormone is working. The booklet on thyroid problems discusses both under- and overactive thyroid glands. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes skin tags? They hang from my neck and under my arms. -- D.H. ANSWER: Their cause isn’t known. Your doctor can clip them off without any fuss. By age 69, 60 percent of us have one or more of them. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. TIDBITS® AND MUSIC

THE VILLAGE PEOPLE Take a cowboy, a construction worker, a sailor, an Indian, a traffic cop and a biker, put them all together, and what do you have? The Village People, of course! Join Tidbits for a look at one of music’s most interesting combinations. • As French composer and music producer Jacques Morali strolled the streets of New York City’s Greenwich Village, he happened on to Felipe Rose dancing in an American Indian costume. Rose was of Puerto Rican and Lakota Sioux descent and worked part-time as a bartender, dancing as he served drinks. Morali conceived the idea of a musical group made up of individuals from the Village’s various social groups. While attending a Broadway production of The Wiz, he found his police officer, Victor Willis. Victor’s friend Alex Briley was commissioned to play the G.I., and a Brooklyn Tunnel toll collector, Glenn Hughes, was added as the biker. Morali placed a classified ad announcing auditions for the other slots, calling for “Macho Types with Mustache,” and the Village People were born. • Randy Jones was the group’s original cowboy, and was the only member to ever actually live in Greenwich Village, where he has resided since 1975. Although he was replaced in 1980, Jones made Entertainment Weekly’s list of Top Pop Culture Cowboys, along with John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Roy Rogers. • During the disco era, the Village People released ten albums and numerous singles, selling more than 65 million recordings. During their heyday, Madonna and Joan Rivers appeared as the group’s opening act in Las Vegas. Most people remember “Macho Man” and “In the Navy,” but the long-enduring “Y.M.C.A.” is by far the group’s biggest hit. • After visiting New York’s 23rd Street Y.M.C.A., Jacques Morali was inspired to write about it and composed the number in about 20 minutes. Victor Willis came up with the words, and the horns, strings and driving beat were added. This 1978 tune has been performed as a group dance everywhere from dances in the school gym to wedding receptions to sporting events. The New York Yankees began using it as a middle-of-the-fifth inning break in 1996. The Village People themselves led the crowd through the motions at the 2008 Major League Baseball All-Star game in Yankee Stadium. • “Y.M.C.A.” is even popular with politicians. In 2004, at a summit with Asian foreign leaders, thenSecretary of State Colin Powell entertained the dignitaries with a karaoke version at the closing ceremonies. • As the Village People were basking in the 26 weeks of “Y.M.C.A.” on the Billboard charts, Hideki Saijo recorded his own Japanese version entitled “Young Man” and hit Number One on the Japanese charts. • Only three of today’s Village People are the originals – American Indian chief Felipe Rose, construction worker David Hodo, and soldier Alex Briley. The current traffic cop, Ray Simpson, has been around 30 years, cowboy Jeff Olson since 1980, and biker Eric Anzalone since 1995. Anzalone replaced Glenn Hughes who died of lung cancer and was buried in his leathers per his request. • Stop by 6529 Hollywood Boulevard along the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and you can view the Village People’s star, located between the stars of Liberace and Betty Grable.

A VISIT TO CANADA How much do you really know about the ten provinces and three territories known as Canada? Tidbits takes a short visit to the place that takes its name from the Iroquois word, kanata, translating to “village” or “settlement.” • Canada is the second largest country in the world with an area of 3,855,103 square miles (9,984,670 square kilometers). Only Russia is larger, almost double Canada’s size. Six time zones span across its length, including the unusual Newfoundland Time Zone, which is an hour and a half ahead of New York City and Toronto and 30 minutes ahead of the other Maritime Provinces. • It’s a nice place to visit, and you might want to live there! The United Nations Human Development Index ranks Canada at the top of the list for highest quality of life in the world. Vancouver, British Columbia ranks as number one (tied with Zurich, Switzerland) for the highest quality of life of any city. Canada has the fourth lowest population density in the world. • From coast to coast, Canada stretches for 5,500 miles (8,850 km). If you want to drive the longest highway in the world, start in Victoria, British Columbia, and drive east along the Trans-Canada Highway for 4,860 miles (7,821 km) until you reach St. John’s, Newfoundland. • Part of the border between the United States and Canada is formed by the magnificent Niagara Falls. Horseshoe Falls, at a height of 173 feet (53 meters), is located entirely in Canada. The water is 184 feet (56 meters) deep at the base of Horseshoe Falls. American Falls is entirely within the U.S., and is 182 feet (56 meters) high. About 37 million gallons of water roar over the two falls every minute, with 90 percent of that amount thundering over Horseshoe Falls. About 20 million people visit Niagara Falls every year, and more camera film is sold there than anywhere else in the world. • Visitors to Edmonton, Alberta, can make a stop by North America’s largest shopping center, the West Edmonton Mall. Covering about 48 city blocks, the mall was the world’s largest for 23 years before being passed by in 2004. Shoppers can browse in more than 800 stores, choose among 100 places to eat, or splash in the indoor wave pool at the world’s largest indoor waterpark, covering 4.9 acres. An indoor lake houses a life-size replica of Christopher Columbus’ ship, the Santa Maria. • Canada’s province of Newfoundland is home to the oldest European settlement in North America. On the feast day of St. John the Baptist in 1497, explorer John Cabot discovered Newfoundland, which probably accounts for the name of the new settlement founded there, St. John’s. • The eastern coast of Canada is closer to London than it is to its own western coast. • You had better behave yourself in Rodney, Ontario, or you might just end up in what is believed to be the world’s smallest jail. It measures 14.8 ft. x 17.7 ft. (4.5 meters x 5.4 meters), a total of about 270 square feet (24.3 square meters in area.) • Famous Canadians include Michael J. Fox, Dan Aykroyd, Paul Anka, Morely Safer, Sarah McLachlan, and Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.

Twist, Shape and Bake Healthy Bread Bears Baking bread is just plain fun when your preschoolers shape prepared dough into adorable bear shapes. Toss in simple math along the way too, as your pint-size bakers divide the dough into halves, fourths and even sixths to form the bear’s arms, legs and snout. They’ll watch the dough rise before their eyes, and they’ll love “painting” the bears with an egg wash before you pop them in the oven. Serve them warm, drizzled with some honey from a little pot for a memorable afternoon treat.

Here are the simple ingredients you’ll need for two 8-inchtall bears: • One loaf of prepared frozen bread dough, such as Rhodes brand (available in the frozen-food section of grocery stores) • 1 egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon of water • Raisins • Honey (optional)

Here’s the fun:

1. Thaw the loaf of frozen bread dough for two 8-inch-tall bears. Use it while it is still cold.

2. Cut the loaf in half. Set one of the halves aside for a few minutes while you form the first bear. 3. Cut the dough into two even pieces, and let your child roll one of the pieces into a ball with his hands. Set it on a large, greased cookie sheet for the body. Press it down to flatten slightly. 4. Cut the other piece in half. Roll one of the halves into a ball for the head and place it above the body. You may need to pinch the two parts together. 5. Pick off a small bit from the remaining piece for the snout. Cut the rest into six even pieces. Roll all seven small pieces into balls. Place a ball on the face for the snout, two ears at the top of the head, 2 arms at the sides of the body, and 2 legs to the bottom of the body. 6. Make tiny slits in the dough and insert raisins for eyes and for a belly button. Repeat steps for second bear. 7. Let them rise, covered with a damp towel or plastic wrap, for about 45 minutes in a warm place until doubled in size. 8. Remove covering and brush some egg mixture on top of the bears. Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on a cooling rack. Tip: Make several bears, and dress them up with thin ribbons tied around their necks. Set in a basket as treats at a teddy bear party. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning television series “Donna’s Day” airs on public television nationwide. SECOND-GUESSING DOG’S DEATH DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently lost my dog “Mischa” to an illness, and I’m overwhelmed with sadness and guilt. Her death was very sudden; one day she was fine and then she was not. I can’t help wondering if there was anything I could have done to prevent this from happening. Did I give her the wrong food? Was there something in her medications she might have had a reaction to? I’ve had no answers from the vet. Am I wrong for constantly second-guessing myself? Should I just get over it? -- Devastated in Dallas DEAR DEVASTED: First, I’m very sorry for your loss. Pets are so much a part of our families that losing them can be incredibly difficult. “Getting over” the loss of a pet isn’t something anyone should be told to do -- it’s not unusual to feel sadness for a pet years after its death. A close friend of mine still speaks fondly of his dog King, who died when he was a boy. And I often miss pets I lost years ago. I personally feel that adults can grieve openly for pets in a way that they can’t grieve for humans. We have to bear up and be brave at the loss of a relative or friend, perhaps be the one who must organize everything. But for a lost pet there are no such barriers to just grieving for them. On the other hand, you want answers for Mischa’s sudden death. More questions should be asked of the veterinarian. What did her symptoms point to -- an infection, a reaction to something? That the vet has no answer at all is curious, but I’m not familiar with the circumstances. Continue pressing for answers from the vet.
