APARTMENT HOUSE LANCASTER/HANOVER MASQUE

OBJECT

SUBJECT

Apartment House

The Dwellers

A six-storey walk up construction based on a 1930s New York Economy Apartment House. Wood beams on masonry walls and metal re escapes. Awnings on narrow facade. Desirable because of location. It overlooks the Court House, the Prison House, the Church House and the Death House.

Although a six-storey walk-up, the Dwellers enjoy a sense of community. Their working hours seem more reasonable. When descending the Apartment House stairs the children jump the last four steps. When ascending they count the steps. Each Apartment House has its own Janitor. He stokes the boiler and provides the cardboard boxes for the children’s kittens. The Janitor from Apartment House no.6 comes from Estonia.

COLLECTIVE ECOLOGY MASQUE MODEL

The hanover masque is a theoretical project that has never been built in reality. The project shows a strong sense of narrative between the “subject” and “object” Thus, it is in a strong sense of narrative driven project. In developing the hanover masque project, the approach taken to develop the masque is base on the character that could be derived from the narrative, form or other details of the masque project. Hyjduk’s Apartment House conveys the language of “collectivity” that is the house is considered as a collective group instead of an individual entity. From the brief of hanover masque, it states “Although a six-storey walk-up, the Dwellers enjoy a sense of community”The expresses the specific character of the Apartment House. The approach developing the hanover masque is to develop an ecology of Apartment House. In further development, spatial relationship between individual entities become the major focus of the project. In developing the project, models of different scale was made to “re-interpret” the idea expressed in the subject of Apartment House through personal reading on the subject.

APARTMENT HOUSE 1:100 The 1:100 model is the first attempt to read the Apartment House by the means of making model of it. The form of the model reveals a language of contradiction between the regular block and irregular parts extends out of the block.

COLLECTIVITY 1:200 The 1:200 model tries to create a system between the Apartment Houses in collectivity. Different configuration between houses shows the in-between relationship of the houses and suggests the ecology that operates the interdependent relationship of solid and void.

DUALITY 1:50 The 1:50 model reveals the relationship between the positive and negative space of the ecological system of the Apartment Houses. The model is consist of the negative and positive space that is visually connected instead of physically connection. The negative space shows the in-between relation while the positive space shows the detail such as the beams system of the house.

DETAIL 1:50 The photos further reveal the details of the model. The positive part shows the structural detail such as the wooden beams, floor slabs, etc. On the other hand, the negative part shows one’s experience of the space in-between the collective system of Apartment Houses.

SECLUSION 1:25 The 1:25 model shows part of the negative space formed between the configured Apartment Houses. The model suggests the spatial quality when one situates within the space surrounded by the tremendous building. The sense of seclusion is also experienced.

INTEGRATION 1:10 The 1:10 model attempts to reveal the detail of the masque. It shows the interior condition of a corner when the irregular part meets with the regular block between two Apartment Houses. The overlapping of space suggests the possibility of a new space.

SPACE IN EXHIBITION MINIATURE UTOPIA IN A VALISE

The valise summarises and represents the essence of the lancaster - relationship between negative and positive space within a collectivity of apartment house. The valise is consist of four models with three scales - 1:200, 1:100 and 1:50. It is divided into four distinct part to locate the four model, it shows a cut of the model. However, it consider the valise as a space exhibited that is one can have the experience of walking inside the valise with the spatial experience. Therefore, the space inside is connected

Ecology 1:200

Void 1:50

The 1:200 model shows the system that work between the Apartment Houses when they are seen as a collectivity. It shows the quality of enclosure.

The 1:50 model shows the negative space that is experienced by the individual within the valise created in the ecology.

Hybrid 1:50

Cut 1:100

The 1:50 model shows the interior inside the Apartment House, it conveys the language of in-between space in terms of the arrangement in partition.

The 1:100 model cut the Apartment House to reveal the section of it. The cut is progressional to express the language of verticality of it.

FLUIDITY CHINATOWN

In the site visit to Chinatown, a market that is located below an apartment house shows an intriguing sense of fluidity in spatial experience. The market is arranged by the column grid system of the building, vendors develop their own territory in accordance to the rigidity of system. Vendors’ spatial arrangement in the market expresses a high degree of fluidity. They dominates the space in an organic way.

In the photo on the right, The facade of apartment house also shows the sense of fluidity as each dweller from the unit try to compete with one another and extend their territories out of the rigid grid facade. The canopies or hanging object of dwellers try to cross the boundary bound by the facade in the z direction. This shows the condition of escaping from the rigid system and self-evolving system on the apartment’s facade.

FLUIDITY Vendors use the space in market in a random and fluid way. When their neighbours do not show up on the day, they try to take up the space of their neighbours by putting their goods or tools over the territory of their neighbours. The corridor of the market is also taken up by the vendors for extending their territories for storage and sale of goods.

EVOLUTION Vendors The drawing depicts the situation that happens in the market. The vendor dominates their own territory that is represented with the thick curvy line. The vendors try to extend their space by spreading their goods and belongings to the gap between their neighbours or to the public corridor. Such acts are represented by dash line in the drawing. The drawing also depicts the relationship between vendors as they are showing influence with one another and they start to show the integration.

REALIZATION The drawing is a realization of the previous drawing in expresses the form of fluidity that is conveyed in the original drawing. This drawing expresses the relationship between rigid grid and organic fluid form with the composition of different geometry. The shadow dropped shows the 3-dimensional nature of the space. It also shows the negotitation between the rigid system and the evolving curvilinear system.

THRESHOLD The model shows the concept of threshold. When one is rigid transcends to become that expresses the sense fluidity. The model further defines the space when they are embodied with the concept of interior and exterior.

DETAIL The detail of model is shown, it shows the condition when the interior partition wall that represents the rigidity transform into the exterior wall that embodies fluidty when it passes through the threshold.

SKETCHES The sketches shows the thinking process in generating the model

OPERABLE COLUMNS The model shows the concept of operable columns that exist in the market. The column is designed to be rotated with the attached partition wall, this is to introduce a high level of flexibility in spacial arrangement. Also, it creates different “flow” of people as the wall directs people’s flow within the market

FLOW This is the model of the drawing “Realization”, the drawing that reconfigure the fluidity expressed in the market. The model shows the tension between the rigidity and fluidity. It also suggests the existence of a horizontal flow that is controlled by the rigidity. The curvilinear forms try to interfere the flow and creates the sense of “stopness” in the flow

DETAIL The photo tries to capture the detail of model in both the plan view and perspective view

POOL MARKET BANGKOK MASQUE

“Something that is counter-intuitive does not happen in the way that you expect” - Cambridge Dictionary

Upon the research done in the context of Bangkok, the essence of the Bangkok masque could be found. BY means of drawing and model, it is concluded that the Bangkok masque shows a sense of contrast between rigidity and fluidity By visualization of space, it embodies a significant spatial condition influenced by the two contrast - flow. Flow is directed by the rigid system while is interfered by the fluid element.

In response to the finding of the research, the Bangkok masque project is to design the “stopping space” to resemble the situation of interference. The design is to alter or stop the flow within the rigidly regulated space. The stopping space attempts to provide the space that one can escape from his daily routine life of following the tedious flow. He can meditate, contemplate or even pray at the stopping space designed.

OBJECT

SUBJECT

Pool Market

The Stroller

The pool market is located under an Apartment House in Bangkok’s Chinatown. Most of the dwellers in the Apartment House are retired man and new-immigrants. The market has a nice location because it is convenient for the dwellers to buy food. Unlike, normal wet market, the pool market initiates a diverse flow of people in it with the “pool” space introduced.

The stroller is a retired man who lives in a small unit in the Apartment House. He likes going to the market to buy fresh food everyday. Instead of planning the route or following the route on a daily routine, the stroller likes wandering around the market without any purpose. This is what he calls “Counter-intuitive” as he thinks things could happen out of his expectation when he goes in a random approach. He enjoys observing people and cats in the market. Sometimes, he meditates alone in the “pool” space within the market.

DIRECTED FLOW The drawing is a plan drawing of the original flow of the market. From the drawing, it could be conceived that the regulated column system serves as a role in directing the dwellers’ movement within the market. Although the movement of each individual dweller may differ, the pattern of flow is shaped in a horizontal way.

FREEING FLOW The drawing shows the plan of pool market. The stopping spaces (also known as the pools) are introduced as an alien” structure to the market. The spaces provokes the randomness and freedom in circulation within the market. The stroller is set to be free from the directed flow, he creates his own flow. He “wanders” and “stops” to capture different moments that happen in pool market.

BREAK 1:100 The model shows the design in a scale of 1:100. The model is composed of two major parts, the upper block and lower part of market. The block shows the resemblance with the column grid system and conveys the idea of rigidity while the pool market below shows its challenge to break the rigidity and form the counter-intuitive spatial experience

POOLS 1:100 The models in the scale of 1:50 show the spatial quality that one would experience when he situates inside one of the pool spaces created that try to stop or alter the flow of dwellers and the stroller. The space are designed to direct or transit.

TUNNEL

1:100

The “Tunnel shows its directional quality as it is a tunnel that directs the stroller to a destination. The tunnel is dark and intimate space, there is only one slit on walls that allows the stroller to observe what is happening outside of the tunnel while people do not notice his existence. The destination directed by the tunnel allows the sunlight penetrate through. The stroller is always intrigued by the light at the very end of the tunnel and attracted to walk through the space.

FORUM

1:100

The “Forum shows a geometry of circle being intercepted by a set of perpendicular lines, it reflects the transitional quality as there are several entrance that transit the original flow of the stroller into a random flow. The circular part encloses the space and form the sense of seclusion. It serves as a private space while the other part becomes more open and connected to the space of market forming a more opened space. Stroller enjoys chatting with the passengers in the market.

PEEP

1:100

The “Peep shows the directional quality as it is an intimate space that only allows one person getting inside, it is composed of a inclined cylinder that is attached to two stacked walls. The stroller needs to bow down in order to get through the entrance of the cylinder which forms a sense of introduction to the space inside. When the stroller stands within the cylinder part

CENTRE

1:100

The “Centre shows the transitional quality of space. The main transitional space lies in the centre of the space. Four walls are extended from the square situated at the centre and forms different condition of space such as the open space and enclosed space that provides different nature of space to direct people in the market

TUNNEL 1:25 The 1:25 model of “Tunnel attempts to rationalise design in terms of building structure and materiality. A framework structure is introduced to the design as a realization of the construction.
