WELCOME

Welcome to the summer 2023 edition of Tingdene Life magazine. You will notice the magazine has had a little refresh for the new season, and we hope you enjoy reading it.

Inside this issue, you’ll find the latest news from Tingdene Boat Sales and Marinas, tips, advice, and inspiration for your summer of cruising the UK’s waterways. Everything inside is designed to guide you towards making the most out of your time on the water, whatever your cruise plans for the summer are.

In this issue, we focus on our most southerly marina, Pyrford Marina, home to an amazing variety of narrowboats and small cruisers with direct access to the River Wey. We also discover some of the UK’s best loved rivers and canals, explore the finest food and drinks on offer, located at or close by our ten marinas, and delve into the infamous Upton festival season.

As we know, the boating season is very much under way, so now is the perfect opportunity to scrub up or develop some boating skills with East Coast Motorboat Training, featured on page 28, and gain a qualification while doing something you love.

It has been a real pleasure seeing many more of you fill our pontoons across all of our marinas, and we look forward to meeting many more of you as the season progresses.

All the best for a successful summer on the water, full of new discoveries and, more than anything, memories to last a lifetime.

Best wishes,

DELPHIA DELIGHTS

TINGDENE BOAT SALES ARE NOW A DEALER FOR DELPHIA ON THE EAST COAST

Delphia have been building cruisers for over 30 years, with their vessels specifically designed for the lakes and rivers of the world. Perfect for exploring the Broads and the UK waterways to your heart’s content!

Their three models are nothing short of spectacular. A Delphia craft would be the perfect investment to really take family time to the next level and make the most of your leisure days with each other, doing something exciting and making new memories.

CONVENIENCE AND COMFORT

NEW FACILITIES AT THAMES & KENNET AND RACECOURSE MARINAS

We have recently opened brand-new toilet and shower facilities at Thames & Kennet Marina and a new toilet block at Racecourse Marina Windsor.

The convenience, modernisation and improved sanitation for the sites means berth holders can spend a day on the marina or out on the water knowing there is everything needed to freshen up when they return.

Adding new facilities to our marinas will provide many benefits for berth holders and is one of the ways we are working to improve visitors’ experience on the marinas in 2023.

HARTFORD HAPPENINGS

HARTFORD MARINA’S NEW ADDITIONS

Hartford Marina has had a lot going on over the winter months! A new car park, ramp and pier have been installed, all of which have already been incredibly useful for berth holders and visitors alike.

A new car park is now open and available for all berth holders to use, complete with a ramp down onto the recently updated pontoons, making access much easier and safer.

‘Pier A’ is set to be the new home for cruisers at Hartford Marina, allowing smaller craft easy access in and out of the marina. The pier will be the new area for current cruiser berth holders to make the most of, and will hopefully attract some new berth holders to add to our water-side community.

EASY UPGRADES

TOP 5 EASY UPGRADES FOR YOUR BOAT

WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED WITH SOME OF THE BEST UPGRADES TO ENHANCE AND MAINTAIN YOUR CRAFT THIS SEASON.

Take a look at how small tweaks to your vessel can make your boating experience even better!

1. FLOORING.

Likely to be one of the first things to wear, this is a great way to upgrade your spec and create a fresh new look. Simply sanding and finishing with teak oil may be all that is needed, but be sure to replace any damaged panels.

2. EXTRA SHADE

During summer time the sun can be powerful, especially on the water, so additional shade is always a great idea. Installing a Bimini boat shade will provide instant results and is easy enough to be a quick DIY project.

3. BOARDING RAMP

A ramp can be a great addition to your boat, especially if you’re hoping to invite the whole family. It ensures safer boarding and means you can moor pretty much anywhere without the worry of water levels and falling overboard!

4. USB CHARGING PORTS AND A PHONE CRADLE

Simple as it sounds, it’s often the most obvious things that are overlooked. Keep topped up with an easily installed charger that can connect to the boat battery, and a cradle to keep everything securely in place.

5. UPGRADE YOUR ENGINE.

Usually a job for boat mechanics, replacing your engine will give you that permanent boost of speed and reassurance you’re going to be plain sailing all summer and beyond. Prices vary considerably so talk to your local dealer to find out the best options for your budget.

DAY BOAT CHECKLIST

A day on the river can be as restorative as it is fun, especially when you can completely switch off.

We have compiled our top 10 ‘must-haves’ for a day out cruising in your day boat, all of which will easily fit into the storage onboard.

1. LIFE JACKETS & LIFE RING

As a minimum, make sure your boat is equipped with one for every passenger. Hopefully, you’ll never need them but always make sure they’re maintained and up to the task.

2. FULLY CHARGED PHONE & CHARGER

We know you want to get away from digital noise, but always carry a phone and charger for emergencies onboard. Always let others know your route and estimated time to be back too, as there may not always be a good signal.

3. A MAP/ COMPASS/GPS

You’ll need to know where you’re going and importantly, you’ll need to tell others your exact location if you get stuck. Always take a back-up navigational source just in case.

4. FOOD/PICNIC /SUPPLIES

No doubt a picnic will be part of your plan anyway, but always keep some non-perishable snacks and drinks handy in one of your cupboards onboard, just in case you are out longer than planned and the kids get hangry!

5. A BASIC FIRST AID KIT

Pack a ready-made kit or make up your own, adapting to whatever plans you have and who you are taking with you. Don’t forget sun protection too, even on cloudy days.

6. CLOTHING & GOOD FOOTWEAR

Layers on cruising days are ideal but it’s also a good idea to keep a blanket and jacket onboard. And don’t forget a sun hat and sunglasses! Wear shoes that are OK to get wet and will dry quickly. Light coloured rubber soles are perfect.

7. GAMES/ CARDS

Don’t forget to pack some small fun games to enjoy with the family. A ball, kite or even croquet is perfect to take too for any time you stop off and explore the countryside.

7. A CAMERA & BINOCULARS

There is an abundance of wildlife and scenery around UK waterways, and to capture it in action is such a rare opportunity. Remember to take a camera, or use your phone, and some binoculars to really make the most of being among all creatures great and small in their natural habitats.

8. PEN AND PAPER

You never know when these will come in handy on land or water! Record your journey, wildlife you have spotted and any hidden gems that you’d love to return to.

9. TOWELS/SWIMWEAR

Essential for a hot day and if you’re planning to have a dip, keep a set stowed away all summer for those impromptu moments or if the weather heats up unexpectedly.

10. ACTIVITY & SPORTS EQUIPMENT

A day boat is perfect for a spot of fishing and watersports. Equipment will rarely be needed off your boat, so keep it all together in one of the storage cupboards onboard, so everything is easy to get to every time you are on the water.

BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS

TRAIN BEFORE YOU SAIL THIS SUMMER SEASON

Although it isn’t a legal requirement to have completed any boat training to skipper a sub-24m yacht in UK waters, it is a huge help to get some tuition if you are new to boating or if it has been some time since you last sailed. And you have the perfect chance to learn something new this year, with East Coast Motorboat Training Ltd (ECMT).

Based at Tingdene Broadlands Marina on the North Sea coast at Lowestoft, perfectly positioned in the heart of the Broads, the Royal Yacht Association Training Centre gives you access to RYA recognised boat training and boating course packages that can be tailored specifically to the skills you wish to develop or expand on.

Chris Billson, Principal & Chief Instructor at ECMT offers onsite training at Oulton Broad, perfect if you are nearby or are planning adventures on the Broads this summer. And with access to 120 miles of navigable inland waterways and the North Sea, it’s the ideal location for all levels of training. Alternatively, he can also come to your location and train where your boat is moored, for customers’ convenience.

The RYA courses on offer include everything from intensive 6-day courses right through to short half-day skill top-ups.

The program is designed to get more people onto the water, enjoy sport activities, promote safe practices, and raise the standards of boating in the UK. There is no better qualification out there, and it’s a pretty fun way to gain a new skill!

“My husband and I recently received bespoke Helmsman and Crew tuition from Chris Billson on our own boat. As novices we found his tuition to be invaluable. Chris was very patient and informative. A fun confidence building day was had by all. We thoroughly recommend attending any courses under Chris’s tuition”

- Jane and Steve Cooper

Alongside the ever-popular RYA courses, ECMT has put together half-day or full-day training packages that are also fully tailorable for every customer and meet national standards. They include everything from engine operation and maintenance, personal safety, vessel preparation, boat handling, securing to a buoy, man overboard, rules of the road, electronics onboard, sea navigation and much more.

Chris has over 30 years boating experience on inland and offshore waters, so his skills and level of knowledge are unprecedented. He says, “It’s a dream to be able to do what I love as a job, while also helping people get into boating or boost their confidence if it’s been some time since they last took a boat out onto water. My main aim is to make sure each customer leaves their training with everything they wanted to get out of it, and more. We have a mission to deliver professional, quality tuition that is fun, safe and rewarding for the whole family.”

WHAT CUSTOMERS HAVE SAID...

“I joined the course as a complete novice and within a short time felt very confident in taking the helm. Chris is a brilliant instructor and inspires confidence. He has a deep knowledge of all matters to do with boating and was able to deal with any questions I raised. Highly recommended and good value for money.” - Nick

“I was extremely impressed with Chris, from East Coast Motorboat Training; he gave step-by-step instruction and was extremely patient with me. TLC YOUR BOAT!

Here at Haven KJ HQ, we love a good acronym. I mean we all know the real meaning of BOAT is ‘break out another thousand’ but that does not mean that we can’t help PPPPPP away some common insurance claims. So, if PPPPPP = prior planning and preparation prevents poor performance, so IOHO* putting your boat back into the water without carrying out a number of simple checks, is NAGI*.

*IOHO = In our humble opinion.

*NAGI = Not a good idea.

1. Inspect, lubricate, and close all valves and sea cocks and check all hoses and pipework. Be aware that many DZR valve assemblies are not reliable after 5 years, so it’s important to check the condition. If they need replacing change the whole assembly.

2. De-winterize your engine. Flush the cooling system, replace engine oil, filter and check belts. Watch for corrosion on drive pulleys. Check batteries and fuel lines and joints.

3. If you have a sailing yacht, check the hull to keel joint if applicable, if large blisters have developed make sure you get advice on the severity of them.

4. Ensure that all hull and deck fittings are in good working order and free from corrosion. Don’t forget to clean and grease them.

5. Inspect any rigging, but be mindful of age and use, and if in doubt contact a rigger for an opinion. Check wire halyards, running rigging and fixing bolts for rust, and repair any damaged covers.

6. Check and test all navigational equipment is in operation – replace if necessary.

7. Clean the interior including vinyl, metal and all woodwork. Thoroughly clean the galley area and ensure that any gas system incorporated within the boat is satisfactory and if in doubt arrange for the installation to be inspected by an approved professional.

8. Carefully check all safety equipment including life jackets, age of life jackets, lights, and expiry dates on fire extinguishers and distress flares. Replace if necessary.

9. Check trailer bearings, tyre sidewalls for cracks, wear and pressure, and that you have a serviceable spare!

10. Update your paperwork. Do you have a manufacturer’s manual, registration documents, up-to-date charts, etc.? And most important of all…..don’t forget your insurance!

Finally, if you don’t have the time or the inclination to DIY ensure that these are undertaken by a qualified engineer.

Did you know, mooring your pride and joy in one of the ten Tingdene Marinas could get you up to 20% discount off your boat insurance. That is 10% introductory discount and an additional 10% when moored in a marina.

We’ve got an easy to use online portal where you can retrieve a quote in minutes and buy online. Or take advantage of our award-winning crew and give them a buzz on the number below.

Just be sure to mention which Tingdene Marina introduced you to benefit from the full discount!

A TWIST ON A GREAT BRITISH SUMMER FAVOURITE, PERFECT FOR SMALLER KITCHENS!

INGREDIENTS:

• 1 egg white

• 350g icing sugar

• 1 tsp crushed cardamom seeds

• A little oil for greasing

METHOD

STEP 1

• 142ml pot double cream

• Juice of half a lemon

• 250g punnet raspberries

Lightly whisk the egg white, then stir in the icing sugar and cardamom to make a firm fondant icing. Roll the icing into 8 golf ball size balls (you probably won’t need all of it). Two at a time, place the balls at opposite ends of a greased piece of baking paper, then microwave for 30-40 secs on high until quadrupled in size. Leave to cool for a few mins, then lift off the paper and repeat until all the balls are cooked.

STEP 2

Whip the cream with half the lemon juice. Crush half the raspberries, then fold through the cream. To serve, place a little splodge of raspberry cream onto each plate, stack a meringue with some more cream, then place another meringue on top. Spoon over more cream, then top with a few raspberries. Dust with icing sugar, serve and enjoy!
